SCHOOL I S I N S E S S ION : NOW W H AT ? by: A licia P etty

It’s that time of year again. As the “head of the house hold,” we carry the lion’s share of the burden for home and family priori ties. We find ourselves juggling careers, school, homework, household management, extracurricular activities, family and social obligations, and so much more. With so many competing priorities, it is no wonder why parents feel overwhelmed. As the school year starts to unfold, we find ourselves trying to be “super parents” and we develop a growing concern about our childr en and how well they will succeed in school. Here are just a few helpful tips to make it through the school year: 1. Delegate tasks. Trans ferring tasks to your children is a win-win situation for both of you. You win because you

get some help. Your children win because they have the opportunity to develop some responsibil ity. Start small and add tasks as the school year continues on. As a result, you will have happier, more cooperative children…and a little more free time. 2. Get yourself and your children organized. Putting an organizational system in place puts everyone in control of tasks and schedules effectively. Make sure you keep your system simple as it will be the key to continuing it throughout the school year. Use a large family calendar in an area of the house where everyone can see it and let your children add their approved activities themselves. Have your children use binders and folders to help manage their school work. You will be amazed to see how everyone will come together to get the weekly tasks done (and no lost home work)!

3. Stay involved in your child’s academic progress. Asks lots of questions about your children’s day at school. Stay in touch with teachers on a regular basis by email and be sure to at tend school functions. Make the extra effort to check grades regularly (don’t wait until progress reports and report cards come home). It is important that you don’t wait until it’s too late to get academic assistance for your children. A tutoring service is a great option that not only helps your children get back on track, but it can be very beneficial to secure assistance before things go haywire. If you have a jam packed schedule and/or a tight budget, online tutoring is a great alternative. Check out the ad in this issue for M & M Math Tutoring Service or visit their link on our website. They offer online tutoring for students all over the US, as well as in-person tutoring in the Raleigh-Durham area. 4. Lastly, enjoy the moments. Our kids are growing up fast and thes e moments will not last forever. Let us leave social media behind during meals and get back to eating dinner together. You will gain so much in the conversations that occur at the table, and you might even learn some thing you didn’t know about your family. Lastly, remem ber to say “I love you” every chance you get (even when they are challenging you). Make sure this school year is different and you will reap the benefits going forward!

Having the distinct honor to cover, attend and be a part of Myra Bradley’s 100 Women in White was a phenomenal experience. This kind hearted woman looked pass her own needs to shine a light and honor 12 admirable women who dedicate their passions to serving within the community. From the entertainment to the food and to actual program to show these women off, this event was awesome! As I stated I stated the whole event from Beginning to End was all first class but one entertain er that really pulled at my heart string and had me in aw was Little Miss Tamara who totally blessed us during not only her testimony that was shared but through her praise dance performance that she performed to “He thought I was worth Saving”, that was totally appropriate for her that brought the house down. Myra your vision with this event as well as your Women That Care organization is a true blessing to so many. The mission you have established with WTC as an organizational ministry with a goal of bringing women together to focus on the needs of the homeless and the less fortunate has been a gift from God. Working solely on donations and supporter contributions Myra has been able to actively bring relief to the community by way of distributing daily needs items including but not limited to snack and toiletry bags, gently used clothes, blankets, coats, school supplies and food items. Myra you keep being led by God and allowing your gift to make room for you. Phenomenal event Diva. I can’t wait until next year to see what you have up your sleeve.
