I did my “homework” prior to my interview with Sarah + PLEASE RSVP TO MARY

Ty. I was nervous and excited because it was my first interview as

TEA_MOM@AOL.COM

PLEASE RSVP TO MARY TEA_MOM@AOL.COM

a graphic design student seeking a graphic design position. I have worked many different types of jobs and felt confident about my interview skills but I can feel I wasn’t completely prepared. THIS particular type of interview is a whole new skill set. You have to be able to actually TALK about your work in coherent sentences. The nerves didn’t help my realization about this lack of particular skill but I was able to show Sarah several projects that I was working on or had done throughout the semester that had not yet made it into my portfolio. Sarah had great things to say

TH 6th BIR HAPPY

about my project The Pursuit of Craftiness, my hand drawn type and illustrations and she wanted me to be her intern on the spot. Sarah had asked me prior to the interview to make several

BO U N O TH E WAY T FLY A

birthday card announcements for children. I decided to make both a boy and girl invite. They turned out really well in my opinion for some first attempts and Sarah loved them.

-  How will I prepare differently next time? I feel I should write out a description of my projects in my portfolio or a short synopsis. This would prepare me to talk knowledgeably about each piece. -  Does the environment meet the expectations established in the interview? Yes and no, during the interview I felt conflicted because Sarah suggested I work from home and meet with her only once a week or so. This made me feel extremely disappointed because the interview went so well. Upon talking to several professors the situation was straightened out and I would work in the stationery studio alongside Sarah + Ty. Since Brooke + I both interned there we were both given desk space to work and this folded in to my expectations of working in an actual design studio. The studio space is in a great location downtown which they moved from 2,000 + square feet to the new location. It is located in the Daylight Building across from Pete’s Cafe and The Pembrook Building which is proving to be a great location for Knoxvillians. It is a long narrow space with high ceilings and a large window facing the sidewalk.

-  Please describe what was expected and unexpected. I guess I didn’t expect that I would be the only intern in the studio for a few weeks until Brooke started but also they have no other employees. Ty runs all the business aspects of The Happy Envelope - pricing jobs, advertising and accounting while Sarah does essentially all creative aspects. Sarah handles all design. It was over the course of the summer Brooke and I both realized that Sarah could easily get overloaded with projects. From baby announcements, new bridal invitations and proofs Sarah was a one woman show.

DAY one

meeting with Sarah + Ty | Overview of Internship -  Christmas Card Line -  Big Little Ink project

-  Helping Ty with invoice/branding I sat down with both Sarah & Ty to discuss our projects/goals

and The Happy Envelope brand. I was able to start identifying my style and folding into the brand. We discussed Sarah’s process and where she received and gathered her illustrations, monograms and other materials used throughout her collections. We discussed what had been the most popular sellers with the brand and why they worked. We looked at inspiration from Hello! Lucky and Minted.com to see their most popular cards and asked questions on why these were so popular and without copying. Think about what makes them successful? What is working here? I like this way of thinking and I was so inspired and thinking of card layouts as we spoke. The energy between us is free flowing and promising. We talk over each other (in a friendly way), I cut in and ask questions when I have them and Sarah responds and keeps up with my pace. Or maybe I’m keeping up with hers. The underlying passion is there to do good work and that’s what I crave. My passion will fuel me to do good work. What wonderful people to learn from.

Brainstorming Getting into the Christmas Spirit at the end of May. Some initial sketches and phrases/ creations I was beginning to think about.

More sketches. Getting somewhere.

what I’m working on

learning right now

The first week (while Sarah + Ty were on a family vacation) I scanned a lot of material into my computer + worked in Photoshop and InDesign just getting a feel for the photograph placeholders and identifying with The Happy Envelope brand. I wasn’t very enthusiastic about these designs I learned very quickly from what I was making the look and feel of what T.H.E. was heading in. The first example the color palette was off, the photograph didn’t seem to give off the right vibes of inspiration so I started somewhere else. I tried not to get stuck in one place for too long so it wouldn’t slow down my creativity and production. The second examples color palettes were off as well as the frames and decorations. The photography style is very modern while the design was more traditional which didn’t match up. While Sarah + Ty were on vacation we still kept in contact and I did email her my progress. I didn’t feel that confidently about my design until the last one I produced (next pages) and Sarah’s advice and critique were very positive and upbeat. This response was very inspiring and a pleasant surprise.

what I’m working on

learning right now

Dover books being copyright free for publication and commercial use OPENED my world completely to another realm of design elements. I have since updated my resume with a pattern I constructed as well as borders and frames. I am in love with this process!

SCAN. SCAN. SCAN. Learning T.H.E. design method | brand

Adding fonts and images to my “database”. Collecting. Building my knowing of the scanning process and saving files as a bitmap tiff! Amazing what this does. It BLEW my mind!!! Changing the format to a bitmap drops out the background then saving as a tiff translates (well just works better apparently). Sarah is a great teacher and showed me how to scan images from Dover books, change them in PS to a bitmap tiff and use them in InDesign as editable art. Sarah has quiet the collection of books herself and without even realizing I already owned several books I picked up from McKay’s. Now I’m on the hunt!!

Lindy Cohen + Joshua Sherer Invite created by Sarah Pattison

FIRST BRIDE SIT-IN Reflections + connections

Bridal Consultation: Lindy Cohen + Josh Sherer Lindy Cohen & Joshua Sherer were along the lines a high maintenance/demanding couple or to be more formally stated the bride’s mother. The family is expecting a certain level of pristine elegance and wanted to make sure everything was spot on perfect. The consultation was to follow-up on place cards, menus and other parts and pieces for the reception. I was able to offer many suggestions and join in on the conversation where I was knowledgeable. I love to help and I know I have a vault of information from working as a Bridal Consultant for four years. It was interesting to see Sarah, Mother of the Bride and Lindy figure out design for her extra pieces. Knowing what was more cost effective and validating those decisions at the best interest of the bride was a sweet finesse that Sarah has fined tuned over the years and it shows. The mother of the bride and Lindy has some design problems with her location and Sarah + I were able to make them come around to the vision of what would and wouldn’t look good for their overall beach atmosphere.

share your joy

I didn’t expect that I wouldn’t be doing any custom bridal invitation work. I suppose this is an entrusted task for the lead design which would be Sarah. I just wished I was able to do more bridal custom invitation design. For instance, the mother wanted a sign for restrooms (the location is out of state and at someone’s house). The cost for a printed sign would be too much because the format for a large sign would have to go onto a large format printer and it would just be too expensive. Sarah was very diplomatic and talked the couple/ mother into seeing her vision of what aesthetically would work validating another choice into wood painted signs. It almost felt like

Tented Place Cards (tented); hand-written in calligraphy

she was their bridal planner. When thinking about signage for the tables/venue consider: (place card holders, table numbers, menus) is the location outside, tented, indoors, well-lit, how many people to a table? These were all things I picked up on very quickly. I also realized I am essentially branding a bridal couple. Many parallels to what I have been doing all semester with Cary’s Evening in Orange event and our group project Survivor-ship. I feel like I have many resources and valuable experience to offer brides in this industry. I surprised myself. The industry knowledge will come but the initial trust and building the relationship with the bride is crucial.

BRANDING

Project Flow | Quality Control | Packaging -  How do projects flow? Project flow is open at The Happy Envelope often multi-tasking on several different projects at once. The hierarchy is determined by deadline for printing. Everything is determined or counted backwards from the wedding date. Flatprinting (or digital printing) only takes a few day, Off-set can take up to five while Letterpress invitations since they are outsourced to CZAR printing in California they allow up to 2 weeks for delivery. The proofing process can take a week to six weeks depending on how demanding the bride (or most often the bride’s mother) is being about her vision. Ideally the bride would come in to the stationer 6-8 months before the wedding. Sarah says it’s ideal for 8 months to allow time for reprints or in particular letterpress bridal suites. Any other parts and pieces are usually done a month to two months before the wedding date to allow time for printing/reprints and delivery. -  Are you working on one project at a time, or many? Usually working on many projects at once determined by the hierarchy of deadlines + proofing. The overarching project for my internship was to create a new line of Christmas cards. When other orders came in from a store for instance (did several baby announcements and a bridal invitation), or a bridal program that Sarah didn’t have time to typographically construct, or jobs came

in that needed to be counted, wrapped and packaged for the bride to come and pick up those were received as a higher priority. As there are no other full-time employees other that Sarah + Ty it was left for Brooke and I to handle all the counting, inspection of invitations for dirt/ink smudges, etc and packaging. It was a welcomed change in pace from time to time but delayed extensive progress on the Christmas line. -  How are my time management skills? I feel my time management skills are improving but I need to focus on one task at a time to completeness but I feel this might be unrealistic. While at my internship I worked hard all day had many “critique/check-in” sessions with Sarah on my progress and moved quiet nicely into finished products by the end of my time at The Happy Envelope. -  Are you comfortable asking questions? Yes, I feel very comfortable asking Sarah a myriad of questions. Our free-flowing style of conversation complimented one another and we were able to converse quickly, effectively and in such a friendly way. It was a great professional relationship connection. I felt like I easily folded into The Happy Envelope working environment. -  Do I feel my work changed each time I returned? Yes, I feel that my work under Sarah’s guidance improved each time we got together and that my card ideas were coming more naturally. It was difficult to think Christmas season all the time so that was a bit of a challenge.

Packaging Right  -  all pieces are counted, inspected, wrapped and packaged in bakers twine and a business card.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Candy | Sparks Custom edge-printed letterpress invite I also had the pleasure of doing some photography for The Happy Envelope’s blog while at my internship. I learned the importance of photographing and keeping up with your current body of work or your portfolio. It makes a lot of sense for this industry as people order invitations and stationery as the trends change. Internet Marketing and Blogging play a very important role in this cycle. And since T.H.E. doesn’t advertise it is ever more important to utilize these avenues of self-promotion.

Scanning Right  -  I had the honor of scanning all this original calligraphy work for the Griffith invitation.

CHRISTMAS CARDS Learning Type | evaluating trends | branding consistency -  Is this practicum meeting your expectations? My experiences at T.H.E. was too good to be true. I have to say there were so many correlations between my retail life + my classroom experience that folded over into my experience at my internship. My style corresponds with T.H.E.’s image and vision. My professional working relationship with Sarah + Ty Pattison I couldn’t say nicer things about them as employers. Any questions were answered, explained and given examples. I was able to learn the workings of their business and how they were able to manage their workload. It was a very relaxed and easygoing learning environment that I would visit again in a heartbeat. I didn’t feel like this job was work! What more could you ask for? -  Were you prepared for this experience? I didn’t know what to expect but after getting settled and attending a few meeting at Bluegill Creative for T.H.E.’s new project I felt all my schoolwork correlated with everything I was being exposed to in the real world. Again my retail position as a Bridal Consultant helping bridal couples register, pick their china, register for all their houseware needs it naturally folded into me being comfortable talking to brides. My previous internship for the Solar Decathlon for the Living Light house was valuable in my meetings at Bluegill with wireframes, establishing a vision for a brand, the functionality of the interface, workflow and intuitive navigation.

Card Evolution

The evolution of my card designs. Top left  - the wreath was too heavy, the monogram was a plus but suggestions were to shift the scale + add background and to play. The L monogram ended up not working because the alphabet we used wasn’t consistently sized and it would end up being a custom card we wanted to prevent this workload for Sarah and just make the last name of the family customizeable through the website.

SCHOOL vs. PROFESH Expectations | evaluating what I know | life experience -  Discuss the similarities and differences between class expectations and professional expectations: Class expectations | professional expectations are similar in my many ways. The work ethic from the classroom to a professional environment I don’t think changes much. You are still expected to perform at a high level of creativity and bring something fresh to the table. The time table on these expectations are actually lengthened a bit in the professional world. I was not expected to work much outside of my hours during my work week. But when push came to deadline and things had to get done my schedule was adjusted at home to accommodate. Professionally you are expected to work, take frequent breaks but utilize all your time wisely and effectively more maximum productivity, this is especially true in a small studio. Another similarity, move on if something isn’t working. Don’t force an idea if it isn’t coming to you. Keep growing, moving, doing. Stay consistent with the brand and style you are aiming. Look and research inspiration from the real world. - How has this experience affected your schoolwork? I will be utilizing a scanner more in my future! I requested/got one as my birthday gift over the summer. I was able to revamp my resume as well which has helped me “brand” myself more effectively. I also feel more confident with designing within a brand.

Oh, Christmas Tree This Christmas Tree card took me the entire internship to perfect. At first the shape was typical and just needed to be filled in but this proved difficult. The weighs of the flourishes + frames varied too much and I ended up “trimming the tree” down to a more “realistic” shape. I love the final result and varied greens I had to use to balance the visual weigh. I found great inspiration typographically from Towne Bidez’s invitation. At one point in the process I asked Sarah for advice since I was stuck and she said honestly I don’t know what to tell you I thought this was funny considering her experience but it enabled me to find a way to make it work.

Modern Links Teal Banner As I was working on the Christmas Tree card I was trying to also figure out how to place photographs with it to communicate its style more effectively. Obviously the ornate tree didn’t fit with these images or the background. But I was onto something here. The grey pattern I made for the background fit the style of photographs then adding a division further emphasized it’s appeal. Next up a message. I came up with the text first then found an element that would work thus the banner. I also enjoy market place stickers which is a popular trend right now so I added the be jolly message.

Type placement

This was another card that was a type challenge to place. While the title and banner are right aligned I went back and forth between the message being the same and realized it would be more simplistic and less chance of error in printing and cutting. In the end it does look significantly better. I also challenged myself with the chosen fonts and having a different one for the family name and people names below.

Vintage Postcard The start of the card originated from a vintage airmail envelope that I sent my Thank You not to Sarah + Ty after my interview. Sarah showed me how to scan the envelope in photoshop and saturate the scan to anything I wanted. I think I have already forgotten how to do this but it was simply amazing. This Christmas card did look too literal Sarah pointed out in critique so we narrowed it down to the essence of a vintage postcard. Another ah-ha moment. Fitting the photography style was another the style has to speak and if you listen closely it sure does.

Under Sarah’s direction we edited the card from left onward. This was a case of too much is a bad thing. Just taking away the top and bottom of the card (I have to admit I was hesitate) opened my eyes to a new vision. I embraced the changes and it changed the trajectory of this design considerably.

I followed the style of the vintage postcard with a vintage stamp. I was able to take this particular one into Photoshop and cut out any parts I didn’t need. I added in the trees myself.

Discarded card idea not forgotten At right are some cards that started out as a great idea at first but didn’t translate into a usable design. I could have gone back and altered them to make them work but I just moved forward. The bird scroll banner in the lower right started another card idea. Sarah liked it so much she wanted to see it larger and with multiple photos. Next page these didn’t end up working either since we used the banner in the designs on the following pages.

Game Changer! I feel over the course of the internship I was able to learn more technically as well. Here is a shining example of a Quickmask tool in Photoshop that I hadn’t used before. Sarah had shown me a more lengthy and simple way to do this but Brooke’s method changed the name of the game for some of my card designs.

Bird Scroll Banner Here was another card I had to come back to many times in order to get it right. At right I was experimenting with a pattern I had made and another placement photo but it looked to much like a baby announcement. My dilemma occurred when the photograph used behind the monogram wasn’t as sterile as the model photo. I had to come up with a solution for making the text/image still visage. I thought a pinstripe would be effective but it was too busy and took away from the design. Then I just used the rectangle as a backer + paired with the new technique Brooke taught me this card was up and running in the right direction.

MULTI-TASKING Project Flow | Hand Production

Matted Invitation

This is an invitation from a store that Brooke filled. She did do several iterations/changes for the client. Here is the final invite that we had to back with orange cardstcok for 100 invitations. We learned whenever an invitation is matted this way T.H.E. usually has to do this by hand in the studio like we did here. This took several hours out of our work day and deadlines but it’s the nature of the invitation business.

ROLE OF CLIENT Client as Designer | Designer as Diplomat

-  How do you see the role of the client in the design process? Here is a great case where the initial consultation goes very well and then the client takes over the design. Sharee Jenkins had an outdoor wedding at a barn, vintage country chic, vintage wedding photographs of the bride’s and groom’s parents as well as their wedding dresses on display, mason jars, wild flowers the whole shebang. The brides color scheme was chocolate pinstripes, raspberry + orange were thrown in just for accents. The initial design created by Sarah Pattison was redeemable a trifold invitation with a hand-drawn map on the inside. The map let’s just say wasn’t drawn by an illustrator but the bride was happy. All the examples the bride picked out at the consultation mimicked some amazing typographically sound invitations that looked quiet distinguished. Sarah was very understanding of the bride’s wishes and 3 proofs later it turned into a chocolate catastrophe. The typefaces were changed Sharee didn’t feel the names were “fancy” enough. “Fancy” in case you were wondering is a highly technical term for just give me Bickham Script for everything! Sarah was very disappointed with all the changes but it is a lesson constantly learned designer’s distinguished eye often vary from the general public’s and in this case brides. The good news! Sharee LOVED the invitation and nearly cried upon viewing it. Redemption I suppose in some form or another.

Payne | Stackhouse Program I was given the task early on in my internship to type set a program for this bridal couple which unfortunately called off their wedding a few days after the proof sent out. I run into this type of situation at my retail position, registering brides only to find out close to the date they have called it off. Nonetheless, it was an interesting and challenging experience trying to make all the information fit in a “design that was easy to read, utilized the brides designs, fonts, colors and style.

Miller Baby Announcement

I was given a few orders along the way as well as Brooke to fulfil for stores around the country. The evolution of the industry in the last 10 years has made the trust possible for people to never step foot in T.H.E.’s studio. Proofing is done via e-mail rather than at an anchor stationery store and business is handled over the phone. Sarah and I talked about these strides of internet marketing, business and growth for small business owners. I learned more here about tracing and kerning letterspace.

PRODUCTION

Anne Haslam Invite | Largest production invite to date -  Are you asked to provide input? Do you supply suggestions? After Anne + Chrissy Haslam came and met with Sarah a few times, Sarah sat down with Brooke and I to figure out the logistics of a book invitation, binding methods, tape application and how that would all work best and still fit in an A9 envelope. I felt this was refreshing and an exercise of what I already knew through my academic course in Bookmaking/Bookbinding. I was able to make some suggestions on a sewn a binding or have baker’s twine. Sarah took what we had to say seriously and it helped her make ultimate design decisions that affected the outcome of the project. -  How do you see the role of the client in the design process? As I have previously discussed sometimes the relationship can go soar fairly quickly as the client takes on the role of designer and what they “think” looks “best.” On the flip side of this scenario you have dream clients. The Haslam’s didn’t have a general budget, knew they wanted to do letterpress and build an invitation unlike any other done by The Happy Envelope. When creativity reigns and all things are possible a dream invitation can be made. This is an element of trust in the designer that they know what they are doing. Rather than client being ultimate consumer who knows all the bond is strengthened with this trust. Anne originally wanted to do a book program and then Sarah said make an impact do it for the invitation.

Opening the large box of letterpress awesomeness from CZAR press in California. I.e., like Christmas for every stationers.

Moss Invitation Another beautiful letterpress job that arrived the same day. This invitation actually gave me goosebumps! I love it so much. Each piece was 2 color front + back letterpress with a pattern, except the menu. It was stunning!

This is part of a blog post Sarah put together for thehappyenvelope.com

D-Day! An exciting day for letterpress! We were all anxiously awaiting the delivery of the Haslam invitation. I think we were all in shock for several days because it turned out so beautiful. The Haslam’s have amazing taste and it is a victory for all stationery designers.

Mock-ups The start of the card originated from a vintage airmail envelope that I sent my Thank You not to Sarah + Ty after my interview.

Brooke + I felt strongly that we had to come up with a system vs. assembly line for this production job. The fabric tape had to be put on first because the marbled paper inside had to go over any seams. We cut/applied tape to over 400 invitations!! This took the better part of two and a half days alone. We all figured this would consume the most amount of time. We were able to come up with a system fairly quickly. Using the cutting matte and some simple math we were able to line up the fabric tape perfectly nearly every time. The challenges presented here were that the adhesive on this tape was extremely strong equals no room for messing up or repositioning. Secondly, we could only line up and apply from the front of the book leaving the back half unapplied until we were able to fold the back down, turn over the book then apply from the tape from the center outward. Otherwise the tape would crease, be too tight or create problems in folding and inserting the invitation later on.

viewing

order

Marbled Paper & Library Pocket Application The next steps in the process were to apply the marbled paper on the inside of the books then the library pocket in the back flap. Again lining up the marbled paper had to be exact while we found another system for applying the pockets. We were able to use the cutting matte again and measure up one in increments from the bottom of the invite to get a precise application each and every time. There was a lot of teamwork.

Inserting Pieces

Inserting the RSVP library card and envelope as well as folding the invitation (which were scored) was a fast process. Anne had applied some stamps in a matching color scheme and we took care of the rest. It was a beautiful moment to see everything come together in a final piece. This invitation was epic.

The End

I had the privilege of packaging up all the invitations. They didn’t get their branding packaging because the books were too bulky at this point. I wrapped everything else. It was a relief to be done with the job but almost a little sad to see it go. It was such a beautiful invitation. What an amazing way to end my internship!

We also got to eat our last day at Nama. You can see I love good food.
