Improving the Urban Future: Urban Government and the Global Agenda UCLG Committee on Decentralisation & Local Self-Government Session to be held at the Liverpool UCLG Executive Bureau Presentation The United Nations are currently debating what will be the future priorities for the world development agenda for post-2015. As the world grows urban (with over 60% of population living in cities in the next future) Urban Governance is one of the central issues in these discussions. In order to contribute to this process and in preparation for Habitat III, UCLG contributes to the design of instruments aimed at providing comparable data on urban governance. The result of this research will take part of the 4th Global Report on Decentralisation and Local Democracy (GOLD IV), a publication that examines the situation of local governments around the world. The UCLG Committee on Decentralisation and Local Self-Government, together with the London School of Economics Cities Program (LES Cities) and UN-Habitat have initiated a study to map urban governance through the identification of key territorial aspects to better understand how cities do work, or how they do not.
Goal The goal of the session is three-fold:
Firstly, this session aims at building a collaborative effort between local governments (UCLG), the academia (LSE Cities), and an International Organization (UN Habitat) in order to join forces to better understand Urban Governance.
The session will also present the methodology and identify cities willing to participate in the exercise. The findings will be made public in a series of publications and researches, including the th UCLG 4 Global Report on Decentralisation and Local Democracy, the UN-Habitat State of the World Cities and the Urban Age Conferences organised by LSE Cities.
Finally, there is the will to contribute to the ongoing debates related to the Post-2015 Development Agenda and Habitat III, and specifically to the consultation on "Localising SDGs" (http://www.worldwewant2015.org/localising2015)
