Hello & Salam!

“Service to others is the rent you pay here on earth” - Muhammad Ali “We shape our buildings, thereafter they shaped us” - Winston Churchill As an aspiring architect, I always seek the value of architecture creation beyond its physical manifestation. In my younger years, my ambition has always been “to contribute for the betterment of society”. It is not until later that I learnt through the writing of a Malaysian architectural academician that architecture has the potential as an agent of change for nation-building; figuratively and literally. Within this portfolio is a selection of works from 2012 to 2017. In selecting these works, it is my intention to show my development and skills as a designer throughout the years. The design studios and elective shown are reflective of some of my passion in specific areas in architecture; housing, design for healing, and learning environment. I seek with great anticipation the next opportunity to working within a new practice as a stepping stone for me apply and expand my architectural knowledge, as well as to grow as an individual along with the growth of the practice.

RE-THINKING SPUIBOULEVARD Dordrecht, Netherlands

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

This is a thesis studio in collaboration with Delta Metropolis Association (Rotterdam) to explore and discover urban and architectural interventions at identified under-utilised sites all across South Holland; in answering the increasing demand of housing needs for their increasingly diverse as well as aging population.

6

The project explores the condition in Spuiboulevard Dordrecht which is in need of urban rejuvenation that can match the more human scale and historical vibe of the Historiche Binnenstad that was once home to a bustling port connected to Rotterdam.

Rotterdam: 21 min. Antwerp: 60 min Rotterdam: 76 min Rotterdam: 60 min Rotterdam: 21 min. Antwerp: 57 min

Adaptive re-use approach is used on one of the highly vacant post-war period office building to envision a viable harmonious community living to house a diverse and aging residents whilst attracting more (affluent) knowledge workers into the neighborhood.

Strategy 1

Restructure street connection to improve physical and visual permeability between the neighborhood to Historiche Binnenstad. Strategy 2 Reduce Spuiboulevard road width to expand the blue-green infrastructure and improve existing green. It is also to create a green network for pedestrian access to Dordrecht train station. Strategy 3 Area of larger intervention to postwar office buildings with high rate of vacancy; to be turned into mixed development land use, and increase housing density in Spuiboulevard. Strategy 4 Repurpose inactive commercial strip on Spuiweg road by engaging lot owners with makers and creative workers, or small local cultural hub to occupy inactive lots on short term basis.

HARMER’S HAVEN MAGGIE’S CENTRE Wonthaggi, Victoria, Australia Cancer brings a new present and future to those affected by it. As a Maggies’ Centre, the building provides a place and space for those affected by cancer to frame their expectation of their present and future.

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

Simultaneously, it is a place that provides a new space for the community of Harmers Haven to

16

frame their rich culture and history for outsiders to learn and wonder.

As a community gallery is introduced into the program, the centre adapts the theme of art therapy as part of their healing and wellbeing journey.

THE STOREFRONT/OF SILVER FACTORY 231, East 47th Street, New York City

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

The response of this studio was generated from a study of social behaviours of the characters from the 70’s pop-culture artist; Andy Warhol and the Silver Factory, which was then translated into architectural and spatial applications.

22

Warhol in his words, “if you want to know all about Andy Warhol, just look at the surface: of my paintings and films and me, and there I am. There’s nothing behind it.” The design of this storefront is derived from its literal sense of aforementioned Warhol’s words. The premise of the storefront is to display the artworks produced in the Factory, as well as to display the ‘wild side’ of the Superstars who work, play and party at the Factory. The existing building provided a context that allows a binary conceptual response to be reciprocated into the storefront design. The concept of exhibitionism and voyeurism comes into play to fit the ‘light and dark’ opportunity created by the existing building.

THE SPHERE: A Centre for Learning, Knowledge and Community Merbein, Victoria, Australia

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

This project is an outcome of an inter-faculty elective subject “Innovative Spaces & Pedagogy” between the Faculty of Education and Faculty of Architecture. Real-life educators and aspiring architects collaborated on a real educational institute’s issues to achieve a fitting learning environment of the 21st century education.

26

‘THE SPHERE’ adapted a real-life school situation in Merbein and attempted to improve its spatial quality through the use of flexible furnitures as well as technology equipment in order to suit the delivery of 21st century teaching and learning. The project proposal provided plenty opportunities for students and education staffs to control their own learning environment whilst displaying their activities for others to participate by observation.

27

THE VIVE: A RADICAL MEDIUM DENSITY HOUSING Collingwood, Victoria, Australia

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

Studio Squeeze is a design studio searching for a radical proposal for medium-density housing in Collingwood, Victoria. There was a strong emphasis in using place-making strategy as a way to foster social connection within a mixed-use typology.

28

Simultaneously, the formal derivation is a response to the prevailing local environmental conditions (orientation/sun/wind/daylight/‌). A process of morphological configurations was tested using environmental software such as Grasshopper’s Ladybug plug-in and Autodesk Flowdesign. The design intends to revive the historical culture of manufacturing in Collingwood. It is also a proposal intended to be integrated with the future development of Collingwood Contemporary Art Precinct in nearby area. Communal areas are placed at intersections of residential blocks as to promote social collision and interaction among residential members and bringing back the notion of knowing your neighbor prevalent in suburban area into the city life.

STUDLEY PARK BOATHAAS Kew, Victoria, Australia

DIAN MASHITA EDDY SURYONO // PORTFOLIO OF ARCHITECTURE

The brief was to design a refurbishment of an existing boathouse in Studley Park, Kew, Victoria in the manner of a master architect. This studio references Rem Koolhaas as an inspiration for his design language in architecture.

32

This proposal was inspired by Rem Koolhaas’ Architectural Association Thesis entitled ‘The Wall’. Several other elements picked up from Koolhaas’ architectural language are the ramp and the banding of volumes.

OUTRÉ GALLERY Brunswick, Victoria, Australia

DIAN MASHITA MASHITA EDDY EDDY SURYONO SURYONO //// PORTFOLIO PORTFOLIO OF OF ARCHITECTURE ARCHITECTURE DIAN

Outré Gallery is a kind of gallery that approaches art in a non-typical gallery mood. The overall concept of the design is inspired by the vibe and materiality pallete surrounding Brunswick, an outskirt city that is well-known for its underground and extremities. Situated at the intersection of the major artery road, Sydney Road and Albert Street, this design is intended to capture the attention of passer-bys whilst being immersed and integrated into the existing urban fabric.

Construction details include the ‘crown’ of tower, housing the Building Maintanence Unit (BMU) roof machine.
