Welcome to the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape (APL) and the first issue of our Student Magazine, produced by the Newcastle University Architecture Society (NUAS). Each year, for our Degree Show, we will be producing an informal magazine documenting what life is like at APL. Rather than a documentation of student work (we have the annual yearbook for that), the Magazine takes a look at our vibrant School from our students' perspective. At APL students and academics strive to create an environment that enriches the student experience through various social, professional and research activities, ranging from our very own departmental society, NUAS, to our public talks and lecture series. Our mission is to allow students from all aspects of architecture, planning, urban design and landscape architecture to connect through our successful multidisciplinary approach to teaching.

This year our Degree Show takes place across the Architecture Building and our newly redeveloped Building Science building. The Ground Floor and basement - where our old workshop used to be - are occupied by nine Stage 6 (final year MArch) studios with a diverse range of themes and subjects. Work from our Linked Research and Architecture and Urban Planning programmes are also on this floor. On the First Floor we have work from our BA (Hons) along with Stage 5 (first year MArch). And the bar of course!

Our APL Summer Shows celebrate the work and success of the students on the BA (Hons) Architecture and MArch programmes at the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape, as well as selected work from our staff's diverse range of research. It offers the opportunity to showcase work to pratitioners from some of the country’s leading practices and display the incredible range of creative, imaginative and inventive projects the school produces. Each year we hold two shows, one in the Architecture Department at Newcastle, and the other in a London venue: this year in Candid Arts Trust opening July 14th.

WE HAVE A WINNER! RIBA Bronze Medal 2016 Winner
“
Allan Chong Allan Yuk Lun Chong, 2016 graduate, won the RIBA Bronze Medal - the most prestigious undergraduate student award in architecture! Allan's amazing project "takes a theoretical path in creating an alternative typology for preservation. It introduces a compromise between the desire for preservation and the cultural shift necessary for architectural expansion in the city’s future. Interpreting the concept of ‘formless’ in preservation means that architecture and heritage are no longer seen as permanent objects, but they keep transforming to re-frame their key spaces." Allan was tutored by Josep-Maria Garcia-Fuentes and Aldric Rodriguez Iborra in their studio 'Building upon Building'.

DESIGN PROCESS METHODOLOGY - ‘EXTRACTION’ AND ‘TRANSFORMATION’ To achieve my concept, my methodology was developed from the way that Soane designed his house. In his extension process, he deconstructed the artefacts from ruins, and he modified and rearranged them for displaying in the space. In the section drawing (Fig. 23), artefacts become part of the space, and he combined different architectural styles by his collections and designed structures, to set up various layers in the space, for example, his ancient architectural pieces such as entablature, columns and statues seem, inversely, supporting his walls, arches and industrial steel frame for the skylight. Indeed, the new structures and the rearrangement of the artefacts started to reframe the ruins and their ‘stories’ in Soane’s space.

Charrette Week is our School’s unique way of kick-starting the academic year. It is a time where students from all Stages and subjects come together and create a school-wide exhibition of thought provoking installations. With artists, engineers, designers and architects that take part in our yearly tradition, Charrette Week gives the students a chance to think beyond the degree and engage with other professions. We are proud to have a tradition that not only connects people together but also, uncover the talent that is within our school. A fun yet meaningful and insightful experience that has gained city wide recognition and becomes the highlight of the beginning of the year.

STUDIO CULTURE.

Friendly, motivational, and effortlessly creative, the studios act as homes away from home. Many students spend most of their time here, working and interacting with one another. Our students have the chance to work across studios in and around the school. By having all the studios open plan, this gives a calming yet vibrant studio culture, allowing the students to engage with other stages ranging from Stage 1 to Stage 6 to exchange ideas whilst encouraging one another. One of the most unique aspects of our school is that we have reserved studio spaces on each level of the building based on the stage and depending on your stage, the size of the studios increases and with each stage having specific studios, students find this approach highly effective.

Throughout the year, our students undergo presentations of their work that we design reviews, or more commonly 'crits'. Crits happen throughout the year, allowing students to describe their work in detail to a panel of tutors and invited guests. They also gives an opportunity for other stages to witness the innovative work that takes place within the School.

In 2017 the School opened a new workshop filled with facilities. We have a team of specialized technicians who are always available with queries that range between construction, design and technology. Located in the new Building Science building, our new workshop have tools that can drill, screw, cut-through with enough work benches for students to construct large pieces of work. The workshops are full of a variety of materials ready for purchase that are available to all students. Farewell to Bill Softley Last year we bid farewell to Bill Softely who had been with the university for 30 years. Bill has been a valued and integral part of architectural student’s education and for that, he will be missed.

AUP stands for Architecture and Urban Planning and is a new BA course at the School. Situated in the Planning Department, AUP students learn a wide range of things from architecture design to planning strategies. Rather than designing buildings, they are encouraged to focus more on the engagement of the local community with designed space and the vision sharing of an area. With the studios designed to be fit for purpose, most of the projects require working in a group of 3-4 and by working in a group students understand that creativity is a product of process involving many individuals, dialogue and compromise.

Newcastle University Architecture Society (NUAS) is APL's own departmental society. A society ran by students, NUAS is proud to host activities that range from Prague and Budapest cultural trips to social events such as the Charity Winter and Summer Ball. KOFIBAR.

Within the school is the renowned Kofi Bar. The Kofi bar is a non-profit cafe run by students for students. With a range of snacks and hot drinks, the Kofi Bar adds a new dimension to the school, providing a hassle-free service throughout the day. A shift at the Kofi bar not only provides familiarity, but also guarantees vouchers for buying architectural materials. There is always a time to stop for a coffee at the Kofi Bar!

Article 25 is a charity that designs and builds projects to provide buildings for some of the world's most vulnerable communities. The name refers to the 25th article of the Declaration of Human Rights stating that shelter is a fundamental to our human rights. Article 25 works to enable this right by building solutions to global problems. The student Chapter raises awareness amongst students of the importance of sustainable design, international development and fundraise to support projects. Throughout the year we organised educational events including lectures on sustainable architecture and a competition for a school design. The aim of these evens was to learn from each other and further our knowledge in these issues.

The APL Summer Shows and this magazine are studentorganised from the generation of funding to the curation of work. Delivering our successful shows takes a full year to organise and would not be possible with the dedicated team of students who put everything together, with the assistance of academic and support staff. To achieve our shows each year takes a huge amount of commitment and time. This is where the NUAS Exhibition Delivery Committee comes in handy. Formed from students across the school their aim is to ensure the smooth delivery of both our Newcastle and London Shows. So: a huge thank you to everyone who was invovled in the exhibition!
