Adapting the City to Soil Process The organic farm waste is spread on the ground, wet down and a Lactobacillus-based inoculant added. It produces no odour. It is then piled up and covered with a waterproof grain cover or tarpaulin, which enables control of biology, temperature and moisture in the compost pile. The material goes through an initial aerobic phase with high temperatures, then slumps back down in temperature and the process then becomes fermentative. You can produce a very high quality compost in around 12 weeks. If left to mature for longer, it will improve its humus levels and general quality. The end product has consistently met AS 4454, the national Compost Standard and the NSW Biosolids Standards. The City to Soil compost process is now used exclusively by Armidale City Council to process green waste.
