August 21, 2019 Premier Jason Kenney issued the following statement regarding the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project restarting construction: “The ‘Notice to Proceed’ is a step forward for the much-delayed Trans Mountain Pipeline. This project has the support of the vast majority of Canadians, including seven out of 10 British Columbians. The news that construction will restart on this project is positive; however, there is still not reason to celebrate. The series of delays and the existing uncertainty around this vital project continue to present serious challenges. “As Trans Mountain begins to prepare for its construction restart, the federal and local authorities must
ensure the rule of law is enforced and that construction is not illegally blocked. History has shown us that there are a small minority of individuals who are willing to break the law to prevent responsible resource development in Canada, and they must not be allowed to essentially veto a project that is vitally important – not only to Alberta, but to all of Canada. “The start of construction is an important milestone, but it should have never taken this long. TMX has been mired in delays and has been through countless months of consultation and a lengthy and rigorous review process. It has been cancelled twice. This cannot be allowed to happen again. Because of all of this, there is only one

way to measure success for this project: completion of the pipeline. “It is also worth pointing out that TMX is only one coastal pipeline. With the passage of the ‘No More Pipelines’ Bill C-69 and the Alberta tanker ban, Bill C-48, TMX will be the only new coastal pipeline for the foreseeable future. This is unacceptable. We continue to urge the federal government to listen to Albertans, to the vast majority of Canada’s premiers and to job creators and repeal the ‘No More Pipelines’ law and the discriminatory Alberta tanker ban. Alberta’s government remains committed to fighting for additional pipelines, growing the economy and creating good jobs.”

WHO calls for more research into microplastics and a crackdown on plastic pollution. 22 August 2019 WHO News release The World Health Organization (WHO) today calls for a further assessment of microplastics in the environment and their potential impacts on human health, following the release of an analysis of current research related to microplastics in drinking-water. The Organization also calls for a reduction in plastic pollution to benefit the environment and reduce human exposure. “We urgently need to know more about the health impact of microplastics because they are everywhere - including in our drinking-water,” says Dr Maria Neira, Director, Department of Public Health, Environment and Social Determinants of Health, at WHO. “Based on the limited information we have, microplastics in drinking water
don’t appear to pose a health risk at current levels. But we need to find out more. We also need to stop the rise in plastic pollution worldwide.” According to the analysis, which summarizes the latest knowledge on microplastics in drinking-water, microplastics larger than 150 micrometres are not likely to be absorbed in the human body and uptake of smaller particles is expected to be limited. Absorption and distribution of very small microplastic particles including in the nano size range may, however, be higher, although the data
is extremely limited. Further research is needed to obtain a more accurate assessment of exposure to microplastics and their potential impacts on human health. These include developing standard methods for measuring microplastic particles in water; more studies on the sources and occurrence of microplastics in fresh water; and the efficacy of different treatment processes. WHO recommends drinking-water suppliers and regulators prioritize removing microbial pathogens and chemicals that are known risks to human
Canada’s young people work hard and are committed to driving social change and building a better country. To support these efforts, the Government of Canada is investing in young people and their ideas — helping to find new and meaningful ways to address pressing social needs like equality for women, success of newcomers and the fight against climate change. Today, the Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance, on behalf the Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, announced a $3 million investment in WE Charity’s WE Social Entrepreneurs initiative. The investment will help more, young, skilled entrepreneurs to create and grow their own social enterprises. Specifically, the investment will help WE support the creation of approximately 200 youth-led enterprises dedicated to addressing current and relevant social issues at a community level and will allow 30 already established social enterprises to become investment-ready. Social enterprises differ from traditional business models because their purpose is to advance a social goal and reinvest their profits back into their communities. Social enterprises are a way to bring together private, public and non-profit interests in order to drive positive social change for the short and long term. Today’s announcement is part of the Government of Canada’s broader commitment to help Canadian organizations find innovative solutions to some of our most pressing social, economic and environmental issues.
increase the skills of some of our most vulnerable youth, while also stimulating growth of social enterprises in Canada. When we create more opportunities for tomorrow’s change makers, we are enabling them to further strengthen our society and the well-being of all Canadians.” – The Honourable JeanYves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development “In every community across Canada, there are young people full of ideas on how to build a better country – and a better world. With today’s investment, our government, along with WE Charity, will be able to help turn more of those ideas into realities. Through skills building, mentorship and financial support, the enterprises that spring from this initiative willmove our country forward on some of today’s most pressing challenges — thanks to the ideas, energy and commitment of today’s young leaders.” – The Honourable Bill Morneau, Minister of Finance “We are grateful to the Government of Canada for the support of youth-led social enterprise solutions. As Imagine Canada studies have shown, fewer Canadians as a percentage of the population are donating to charity, and there is a need to adopt social enterprise models to meet social needs. As one of Canada’s largest youth organizations, nearing its 25thanniversary, and engaging annually 2+ million youth, we know that young people are full of innovative solutions to help solve today’s most pressing social issues.” – Craig Kielburger, Co-Founder, WE

WE Incubate will focus on youth under 25-years of age and will encourage social innovation as a viable career path by equipping young Canadians with much needed skills, knowledge and resources to create their own social enterprises. WE Scale Up will focus on youth under 35-years of age, and it is an immersive accelerator program that will help scale and graduate investor-ready youth-led social enterprises and transform them into the next generation of industry leaders across Canada. • WE Social Entrepreneurs programs will engage over 2 million young people who are annually engaged in WE programs, with a priority placed on new Canadians, women-led enterprises, and Indigenous peoples. • The program will be delivered through virtual and in-person programs including curricular resources, virtual expert classrooms, virtual oneon-one youth enterprise coaching, regional training sessions, pitch competitions, micro-grants, assistance in VC fundraising and more. • The program will be available in English and French, with virtual access across the country, and in-person resources will be delivered in cities across Canada. • The Government of Canada has committed to developing a Social Innovation and Social Finance Strategy and supporting social purpose organizations through partnerships, including the Investment Readiness program that will invest $50 million over two years to help social purpose organizations become investment ready.

“That’s what friends are for!”
Hanggang dumating yung time na nagka BF ako. Dun kasi s’ya masaya yung nagkakausap kami. Minsan pinagseselosan na s’ya ni BF. Pero wala naman kaming ginagawang masama. As in we’re just friends, pero binibigyan
Just Me, Millet

feels. It will take time for her to adjust at kaya rin kailangan niya munang lumayo. You can be friends again pag naka move-on na siya sa’yo. Sa ngayon give her time. It’s good na kaya niyang i-sacrifice ang happiness niya para lang makita kang masaya. She loves you that much. Pero believe me you can’t have it both ways, lalo na’t mahal ka niya. Huwag mo naman sana siyang torturin.

Here and There Human’s mobility is never ending. Even persons with di(verse)sabilities, going from one place to other is a necessity. Not only a fact of life but a reality that one needs to have. It fulfills a function that complete one’s existence. Mankind’s survival is dependent on two distinct places – here and there. The “here and there” are points, spaces, moments or places in life where one finds reasons and roles. Both define and address a need or want in life. The “here and there” also enriches, nourishes and offers valuable lessons in life. Also, it provides time and opportunity for people to browse their social media accounts. As Diaryo Alberta morphed into digital format, Ymor’s Here and There column fuses images and prose to produce short, sharp, focused, probing, engaging and insightful content. As you, our reader, is with-
in or in between the “here and there” may you enjoy and benefit from this new format. We certainly love to hear from you and spread the news to others.
Why Not?
My office mate asked why that plastic water bottle in there? “Why not!” I responded. He scratched his head. I smiled.
Record breaking poke. I told the MedTech that my last three blood works visits were painful and unpleasant. I got three adult size needle pokes each visit. “I have to use the baby needle, then.” She responded. She broke the record. One poke this time. A salute to our Filipina Med Tech. Good job!
Trim, plant, reap! Ornamentals are expensive. Trimmed the excess outgrowths from a friend’s garden. A plastic pail, dirt and sweat. Presto! New plants ready for next year’s blooming season.
