Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced that, as of June 6, 2017 French speakers and candidates with a sibling in Canada will receive additional points under the Express Entry Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). While these may not alter the make-up of the pool in a radical way, the additional points may make a positive difference to candidates who may obtain the new additional points. In addition, registration in the Canada Job Bank will become voluntary. The CRS in its current form will continue to be used in order to rank and select candidates in the pool, and it is expected that IRCC will continue to conduct draws from the pool until June 6, as well as after that date. The most recent improvements to the CRS took place last November, when the number of CRS points awarded for a qualifying job offer was reduced from 600 to 50 or 200, depending on the position offered. At the same time, IRCC made a change to award additional points to candidates who had completed their education in Canada. Before November, 2016, the CRS had not been altered in any way since Express Entry first became operational in January, 2015. These changes taken together may been seen as part of the government of

Canada’s continued efforts to optimize the Express Entry system in order to invite more candidates with skills and experience that, according to Immigration Minister Ahmed Hussen, “will help our economy and communities to grow.” In order to enter the Express Entry pool, eligible candidates must first prove proficiency in English or French by taking a standardized language test recognized by IRCC. Of the 1,200 points available in total under the CRS, 136 points may be awarded for a candidate’s first language, with a further 24 available for ability in a second language. Up to 100 more points are available for a candidate’s language skills within the combination (skills transferability) factors. A total of 15 additional points will be awarded to candidates who prove adequate intermediate (equivalent to Canadian Language Benchmark 7) or better French ability, and English ability of CLB 4 or lower. A total of 30 additional points will be awarded to French speaking candidates who prove adequate intermediate or better French ability, and who also prove English ability of CLB 5 or better. Candidates who wish to be awarded CRS points for French ability must take the Test d’Évaluation de Français (TEF). In the case of this stream, a CLB of 7 in French and a CLB of 6 in English is required. As of June 6, as well, candidates with a sibling in Canada who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of at least 18 years of age may be awarded 15 addi-

tional CRS points. These points may also be awarded if the candidate’s spouse or common-law partner has a sibling in Canada. The candidate or his or her spouse/ common-law partner must share a mother and/or father with the sibling in Canada. This relationship can be through blood, adoption, marriage, or common-law partnership. According to IRCC, ‘having a sibling in Canada has been shown to improve health and social outcomes by accelerating a newcomer’s integration into their new life in Canada.’ Job Bank registration will also become voluntary for all candidates. Candidates who do not have a job in Canada lined up and would like to start their job search will nevertheless be able to register for Job Bank, and this option is expected to continue to be available free of charge. Employers may use the Job Bank, as well as their own recruitment procedures, to search for and hire skilled workers. So far in 2017, IRCC has ramped up the number of candidates becontinued on page 8

In every journey of a mother, there is a cross she carries on her shoulder. Being a mother is a gargantuan task and great responsibility to raise and bring out to the world, a human being that could be a worthy offering gift for GOD’S love to us. When a mother’s journey is with a cross, when she molds with a cross, when she professes God with the cross, she is a good mother and disciple of our LORD. -Pope Francis All mothers have their own unique, different journey in life. A journey that is likened to an unwinding road to pass through, at times smooth and hard, where mothers have to tackle and carry on. All their whole life, mothers give love, care, concern, sacrifice and responsibilities to their children. There are real mothers out there fighting and working hard for their children’s welfare and good quality of life. They have a never-ending huge

tasks and duties. Their strength, courage and patience/perseverance are beyond description. There are mothers who prioritize their children more than themselves, ready to give up their own career, ambitions and happiness. Sacrifice always attached to mothers from the time they bear and give birth, nurturing and upbringing their children all through their stages of life. Is there anything more precious, more steadfast, more constant or enduring than a mother’s love? What I know of a good mother has been my own Nanay, who died last June 5, 2011 left us with my six siblings, a lasting legacy of her love for family unification, traditional family bond of love and respect, her influential traits, natural intelligence and practical ways in life, especially in the formation of our values, served as our strong foundation in life that she imparted for us to emulate. I truly understand the depth, the Godly love and divine caring that

my Nanay carried deep in her heart. Here, to mention some stories of a mother’s journey, the plight of a mother along with her joys and pains. Every mother through this true to life - experiences, may inspire to bring forth and weave the faith into a meaningful motherhood. JOYS OF A MOTHER Story # 1—No place for a single mom to just sit and think of the husband who left her for another woman. Life has to go on, pick up the pieces of her life, to face the difficulties in rearing her four children alone, feeding them, schooling them and providing their needs. Through her courage, strength, great faith to God and to her own initiative ways and means, she was able to give her children the best. THE JOURNEY OF A MOTHER…… HER JOYS AND PAINS promise to her husband’s deathbed wish to continue their children’s studies, this mother, courageously went on her way to support her six adult children. She sought the cooperation and determination of her children to finish a college degree that will serve as stepping stone for their good future. Struggling to overcome the hardships and difficulties in life, they pulled in their concerted effort. It went on for years until they were able to accomplish and attain their goal. Some got scholarships in school, some received honorarium for being an editor-in-chief of the college magazine, some sell repacked sweet beans/peanuts, cards and letter heads paper,

newspapers, ice candies and other means of income to support their tuition fees and allowances, while their mother worked double time beside teaching in elementary at daytime and college in the evening. She made writing as her other source of income publishing elementary textbooks and teachers model lesson plan. Sometimes she opted not to receive royalty payment from her publisher but mostly outright sale of her books because of the urgent need of cash. As the years passed by, the six children one at a time were able to finish a degree, got a stable job, continue on pursuing their studies and taking their masters degree for a brighter future. The children

in return give back the love and sacrifices of their mother by providing and serving her. Story # 3---How proud and happy this mother speaks out about her son’s success and accomplishments in life during her son’s wedding day. She humbly reminisced the years when she was a struggling mother, watching her son grow, guiding him with constant advises and reminders, instilling the importance of education to succeed in life. The sacrifice she has endured, working different jobs and her continuous novena prayers have been fruitful. How truly and right to say, that the happiness she felt cannot really be bought by money itself.

The opening of Max restaurant in Edmonton years ago stirred and excited Filipino-Albertans. Many drove for long hours just to experience the well-known Filipino- prepared chicken, spaghetti and other delicacies. The service and food quality fared well and was at par with other Canadian fast food chains. In Winnipeg, Jollibee’s introduction grabbed headlines among local and national papers living up to its brand and name of service and converting previous nay-sayers. Unsurprisingly, Max and Jollibee are quite similar. These joints have come a long way in establishing a system and standards of quality and service that has undoubtedly left a lasting mark in the Filipino psychic. Once you’ve had it don’t be surprised by the lengths one will go to seek out these eateries. And their followings and

patron base continues to grow. Currently, buzz is circulating about the Northwest corner of 52nd Street and McKnight Blvd in N.E. and the new Max that will occupy this area. It is welcome news to many Pinoys in southern Alberta. But this brings shivers and anxiety to many local Filipino restaurant owners as the coming of “Kalapati / Dove” over the territory of the “Pipits / house birds” is concerning. Pipits in Calgary are sprouting like leaves of spring. Talks of franchising are heard from all directions. Dialect-based restaurant and many eye catching names allure customers. Others offer variety of dining experience like stand-up comedy, stage shows, Karaoke bar and other forms of “dinnertainment”, proving the resiliency and adaptability of a handful of pinoy entrepreneurs. The question here, though, is what does it

take for Pipits to keep their market share given the coming of Kalapati? One needs to understand that Kalapatis have established their brand over a period of time and couple that with their passion to keep their quality standards (customer service, facilities, food, and community involvement) at the highest possible level. Also, customers are keen in discerning mediocrity. Unfriendliness, slow and lousy service, saltiness, oily, loud music, pricey items, crumbs on the table, hair in the food, multicultural utensils, chipped glass and plates, smelly room, etc...are all relatives of mediocrity. A word of encouragement to Calgary’s Pipits. Step up and focus on improving your standard of quality. You are not only for profit but to establish community-of-quality-seeking-customers. Who knows in a few years’ time, your wings, too, will span wider and people will be sure to flock to your shelter for dinnertainment!

The culinary team at Marriott YYC headed by Executive Chef Kai Cronsfoth gave birth to the concept of cultural promotion. The amazing emergence of world inspired cuisines instantly hit the hotel lobby every Wednesday and Friday. It has now become a much-awaited rendezvous with all incoming and visiting hotel guests. On March 18th, 2017, late in the afternoon a new culturally inspired dish originated from the Philippines delightfully surprised the incoming guest’s palates. The great treat with theme “Panlasang Pinoy” ( Filipino Taste) offered a tender, light, and surprisingly mouth-watering twist of a traditional meat loaf. The dish was prepared by the very enthusiastic Chef

Alvin Rayosdelsol with the assistance of lively Sous Chef Gyanendra Sharma of Yakima Restaurant YYC Marriott and under the keen yet charming supervision of Exec Chef Cronsfoth. According to Rayosdelsol, the concept they have spoken is for the purpose of entertainment and hospitality. He said, “ It is great to see all guests at the lobby, introducing them to the warmth and hospitality of the restaurant, the food service department, the public relations for an overall excellent service as Marriott always promised to deliver”. Sous Chef Gyanendra mentioned some of the benefits from the program. He said, “The kitchen team is grateful for the full support and assistance from the entire hotel management, assistance, mentorship from their superiors, and defi-

nitely a playground like full access to the kitchen and ingredients.” Exec. Chef Cronsfoth said that he chose Alvin for this Philippine-inspired dish as he is always alive, funny, consistent and polite. He also witnessed his dedication in both kitchen and banquet areas. Cronsfoth added, “ It is our goal to introduce our guests to different parts of the world from the convenience of our hotel lobby through the cultural dishes we prepare every week. He said, “ It provides skill enhancement for his whole team to showcase diversity”. “Besides being a candidate to be an employee of the month, plus cash or reward benefit received. The greatest reward for our culinary team is if the dish they created if becomes popular may get included on the current list of the season’s menu.” Cronsfoth concluded.

PAROKYA NI EDGAR: Balita Newspaper, Pogi Years old Concert Cusipag committed Tour 2017 in Calgary criminal contempt

Marianne Malaca WRITER

I had the opportunity to witness one of the most sought after artists in the Philippines and out of the country – the band, Parokya ni Edgar put on by Power Hoops Canada (a new face in the entertainment industry). Since their beginnings in the 90s, the band has had a number of well-known hits. The Filipino community was beyond elated watching them take the stage again in Calgary. When I arrived, fans were already lined up along Century Casino. The night was opened by 3 local artists, obvious-

ly showcasing their best performances. Afterwards, sponsors of the show were acknowledged one by one, each receiving a plaque of appreciation. Evidently, the concert wouldn’t have happened without them. When Parokya hit the stage at 8am, the atmosphere shifted and everyone was happy despite the band’s fashionably late entrance. When Chito and the rest of the gang came out, they asked the audience to stand up and come closer to the front of the stage. This caused a commotion but thank God it was handled properly by everyone inside the concert hall. The crowd was ecstatic as they moved closer to their favourite band. “Pizza Pie” was the first song on the list and

Vinch hyped the crowd as we sang along with him. They continued with their Hit songs from the 90’s and the crowd-favourite “Mr. Suave”. I must say, this is probably one of the best concerts I’ve ever attended. It was a night that had every single person in the room their feet, singing, dancing and having a good time. Not only was Parokya ni Edgar’s performance one of the best, but absolutely no injuries were to be had. Calgarians obviously know how to rock out and have a good, safe time while doing so. Finally – a quick shout out to everyone who attended that evening!! – As there’d be no concert with no audience ;).

Back To The Beattles Nite

Fab 4

Toronto, March 8, 2017 – Today, the Honourable Frederick L. Myers, Judge of the Superior Court of Justice, in the contempt of court case: Enverga v. Balita Newspaper, Balita Media Inc., Tess Cusipag, Romeo P. Marquez (a.k.a. Romy Marquez) and Carlos Padilla (deceased), ruled that the media defendants committed criminal contempt of court after having continued to publish and distribute false accusations about the Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator. Senator Enverga filed the contempt motion after Cusipag continued to publish and email defamatory statements in violation of a permanent injunction that prohibited her from publishing such statements. Cusipag sent a number of emails containing defamatory statements to several people, including the Speaker of the Senate, Hon. George Furey, and Ontario Senators Salma Ataullahjan and Thanh Hai Ngo. One of these states: “…Please help me disseminate the truth out there. I have permanent injunction. I am asking all our contacts all over the world for the truth to come out…” To give an overview, in the July 13, 2016 judgment when Balita and Cusipag was found guilty of libel, the Honourable Ontario Superior Court Justice Sidney N. Lederman stated that the defendants, and in particular Cusipag, “has done virtually everything she could to destroy and discredit Senator Enverga in an unrelenting manner”. The judge ordered the defendants to pay the legal costs incurred by Senator Enverga, along with the general and aggravated damages and punitive damages awarded, thus bringing the total amount to which the Senator is entitled to $340,000 plus pre-judgment interest. “They engaged in absolutely no investiga-

tion whatsoever as to the truth of what they were publishing. They were recklessly indifferent to the truth of the Article … At no time has there been any retraction or apology given. Cusipag vows to continue to make defamatory statements against the plaintiff [Senator Enverga] and has shown no interest in stopping her efforts or refraining from misconduct,” the Judge added. Justice Lederman, in granting an injunction order on the same July 13th judgement, recognized the likelihood that the media defendants would continue in their crusade to destroy the reputation of Senator Enverga, saying: “Here, there is an ongoing concern that the defendants will continue to publish defamatory statements about Senator Enverga. They have engaged in a persistent campaign to

injure Senator Enverga and ruin his reputation… They have refused to apologize and they have given no indication that they are prepared to stop their irresponsible defamatory attacks.” The handwritten decision of Justice Myers dated March 8, 2017 states: “For reasons to be delivered in the near future, I am satisfied beyond a reasonable doubt that the ‘media defendants’ defined in the plaintiff’s notice of motion have committed criminal contempt as alleged. I write this now so as to give the media defendants fair warning that the Order of Lederman J. remains binding on them and are to be obeyed in letter and in spirit…” Sentencing will be scheduled at a case conference to be held after Superior Court Justice Myers’ reasons are released.

through the Express Entry system. Nearly 90,000 Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residence have been issued in that time, with many applicants either awaiting a decision on their application or having received confirmation of permanent residence, but not having

A number of Pinoys from Canmore spent their time very productively. Income tax returns, calculators, pencils, erasers, drinks and snacks occupied all usable space on the table. These did not deter the seriousness and focus of the four PICPAs. Close to two hours, PICPA volunteers were quick to answer all questions

thrown at them related to the filling out of tax returns. As the clinic wrapped up, Rene and Anna-Lisa talked about the possibility and benefit of moving the clinic to a school setting in order to access computers, thus allowing participants to file their tax following the session. Participants left the room satisfied and happy knowing that an envelope outlining refunds in their name would be in the mail soon.

March 4, 2017 (Monette/DF) The All Filipino Basketball League in the Bow Valley was born in 2008. Banff then was a hotspot for Filipino Temporary Workers who started arriving in droves since 2007. The Filipino Community in the Valley continued to grow in numbers and they started to long for occasions that would bring them together where they can meet, have fun, enjoy and relax. A group of friends decided to organize a basketball league where everyone can participate either to play or cheer. The first

ever league was a success. It has solidified the Filipino Community and built and nurtured friendships along the way. Also, it has fostered camaraderie and sportsmanship among the Filipino Community in the Bow Valley. Now on its 9th year, the league is organized by the Filipino-Canadian Association of Bow Valley (FILCAN) and is comprised of 5 teams from Banff and Canmore. FILCAN is a not-for-profit duly registered and recognized organization in the Town of Banff. It spearheads and organizes various events in the Valley aimed to strengthen the Filipino community and helps in the integration efforts of

the municipality. This year’s league as usual gathers the Filipino community in a friendly competition and at the same time allows our fellow Filipinos to showcase their skills in sports. In every game, there is a show of strong support from family and friends as they enthusiastically cheer for their respective teams. Games are held every Saturday at the Banff Community High School. The league opened on March 4 and will run until May 20. For more information about the league and schedule of games, you can check FILCAN’s FB page, Filipino-Canadian Association of Bow Valley Alberta Canada.

Possible link between social media, depression being studied: DOH DF

“I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but not everything is constructive. 1 Corinthians 10:23 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Galatians 5:14 Freedom prospers when religion is vibrant and the rule of law under God is acknowledged. MANILA, April 7 (PNA) -- Local experts are looking into the possible link between social media and the upward trend of depression among young people, after global studies showed an 18 percent spike in depression rates from 280 million persons in 2005 to 322 million in 2015, a health official said Friday. In a press briefing for the commemoration of World Health Day, which this year focuses on depression, Department of Health (DOH) spokesperson, Dr. Eric Tayag, noted that local experts are checking the contribution of bashing in the social

media to depression. “Some people have difficulty coping with such bashing, that is why we want to protect them, especially our adolescents -- they are very vulnerable at (this age),” said Tayag. He confirmed that research studies are currently being done by experts and that the department is waiting for the results but studies will also be done by academic institutions and suicide prevention groups, and results will be presented to the media once the data have been collected and interpreted. Tayag said they are also monitoring the calls made to Hopeline numbers 0917558HOPE or 0917-558-4673. The hotline was launched last year by

the DOH together with partners, Globe Telecom Company and the Natasha Goulbourn Foundation, to reach out to people suffering from depression and encourage them to talk to someone willing to listen. Based on the latest data, Hopeline received 3,479 calls from January to December last year. Of the figure, 902 calls were made by teenagers, and 1,902 by young adults aged 20 to 39 years old. Some 60 of them called because they were depressed; 496 wanted information on depression and suicide; 479 were stressed out and possibly depressed; 111 were possibly suicidal; 31 were being bullied; and 14 had low self-esteem. MANILA, April 9 (PNA) -- Manny Pacquiao will be fighting Jeff Horn after all. Pacquiao’s business manager Eric Pineda confirmed to local reporters on Sunday night that the eight-division world boxing champion will stake his WBO welterweight belt against the Australian pug at the Suncorp Stadium in the latter’s hometown of Brisbane on July 2. Pineda, who also acts as Mahindra’s team manager, even said that Pacquiao has begun his training for the said match but, just like how he prepared for his match against Jessie Vargas, is staying in the Philippines to focus on his senatorial job. “Araw-araw siya

nagte-training. Nagsimula na siya. Pag nagsimula na ang session sa May 2, the training will be confined here,” continued Pineda, who was present in the Floodbusters’ PBA Commissioner’s Cup match against the TNT KaTropa at the Mall of Asia Arena. He also said that Coach Freddie Roach will fly in soon to join Pacquiao in training. However, Pineda said that Pacquiao is still open to fight Amir Khan even as soon as the Horn fight is done. “The deal with Abu Dhabi did not push through but maybe for his next fight. Hopefully [Manny will fight Amir] if [the fight negotiation] would push through again and the government of the UAE would still want Manny to fight. We’re still working on it, because

they really want the fight to happen in UAE,” Pineda further said. Heeding with the fans, Pacquiao’s camp began negotiations with that of Khan for the said match with both sides even claiming twice that it was already a done deal. But Top Rank head honcho Bob Arum, who has been insisting for the Pacquiao-Horn bout to happen, denied the claims. It was later revealed that the negotiations were stalled due to scheduling problems. Looking forward to the Pacquiao-Horn match, Pineda said, “Hopefully this will be a good fight. Everybody is excited and wants to go to Australia now. It’ll be good for everyone.” For his fearless forecast, Pineda simply said, “Siyempre Manny will win.” (PNA)

About Salome: A young girl of seventeen years, who lives by the edge of the lake and Elias’ sweetheart and about to marry. Salome is an example of the Filipino woman’s loyalty and modesty. Rizal often drew his characters from real people in his life, and it is believed that Salome is a shadow of Leonor Rivera ( author’s real life sweetheart). “Elias and Salome” was originally the twenty-fifth chapter of the Noli Me Tangere one of the two books of the national hero Jose Rizal’s that started the Philippine Revolution.

ABS-CBN files $5-M lawsuit in Canada for copyright infringement MANILA- ABS-CBN Corp, the country’s leading media and entertainment company, filed a $5 million lawsuit on Thursday in the Canadian Federal Court against a couple for copyright and trademark infringement of the company’s copyrighted works. The lawsuit alleges that Ed Casinillo and Roxy Gonzales sold set-top boxes that were manually programmed by Casinillo to enable buyers to access ABS-CBN copyrighted movies and TV shows. A photo in Casinillo’s Facebook account shows Gonzales delivering these boxes to his customers. ABS-CBN’s AVP & Head of Global Anti-Piracy Elisha Lawrence said the two suspects were taking advantage of the company’s free 7-day trial of TFC. tv by registering over 223 emails and distributing the usernames and passwords to his customers. “These customers were participating in this illegal activity by paying Casinillo and giving Casinillo access to their credit card information,” Lawrence said.

“Beware of these operations that are not licensed or affiliated in any way with ABSCBN. We will continue to protect customers by shutting these operations down. There is only one genuine ABS-CBN internet subscription service and that is TFC and TFC.tv,” Lawrence added. David Lipkus, counsel for ABS-CBN in Canada, said, “The law in Canada is clear that providing services primarily for the purpose of enabling acts of copyright infringement is not allowed. ABS-CBN will continue to take whatever steps are necessary to stop the distribution of these unauthorized set-top boxes. “ABS-CBN invests tremendous resources into its high-quality, original content, and will continue to ensure that Canadians have access to legitimate ABS-CBN content,” Lipkus said. Meanwhile, 3,500 pirated DVDs of copyrighted ABS-CBN movies from Dragon Mart, Tina Shop and Unit 16B of Dragon Centre and Red Carpet

Express of Oriental Centre in Toronto, Canada were surrendered to ABS-CBN representatives who attended with the Toronto Police Service on Thursday. ABS-CBN earlier this month also had a “successful enforcement effort” with the confiscation of hundreds of pirated DVDs of ABS-CBN content from six stores in Montreal and Toronto. “By now, I think pirates are aware that we are dead serious in implementing the zero tolerance policy of ABS-CBN COO Raffy Lopez when it comes to our anti-piracy efforts,” said ABS-CBN Canada Country Manager Jun Del Rosario. “We will not let any scammer or pirate compromise the quality of our content, our distribution platforms and viewing experience, and our brand so that they can enrich themselves illegally. We will protect our property and aggressively pursue these criminals.” (Source: news.abs-cbn. com)

Scootering the City

PHOTOS & TEXT

I often mention the best mode of transportation when traveling to unfamiliar places is by walking; it allows us to get up close and personal to many interesting things that we may not notice while driving. It allows us to discover many features in a relaxing fashion and sometimes we can engage in a conversation and make a friendly connection with locals. During summer months, if I am not exploring the mountains or traveling outside the country, I make a conscious effort to visit and hike many communities in Calgary. It gives me an indication of how the city is growing and come to appreciate the new and old community’s unique culture, in many cases; I stop by for lunch in a café or restaurant nearby. My appetite to discover new and more interesting places in and out of the city inspired me to explore a different mode of transportation other than a car where I can move in or out of traffic faster and obviously fuel efficiency. Cycling gives me the exercise but the hilly streets are quite challenging and of course very exhausting after about 3 or 4 hours ride. Enter the scooter; I can reach my destination quickly and surely a fun way to zip around the city traffic and not having to worry about parking as it can be parked on a bicycle stalls or just about anywhere. Since I started riding, I’ve discovered many interesting places in the city I never thought existed nor would ever visit for no reason. One of the greatest benefits of riding rests largely on fuel efficiency. The cost of driving a car has become quite un-affordable to many. By this, the cost to park especially in downtown would costs $27.00 for the day. That’s more than my fuel cost for a month; the cost to insure, repair and maintenance and an on-going battle for a space in the parking lot will drain your wallet and all the stress that goes along with it. Depending how much I ride, on an average my cost of fuel is about $20.00 a month. I have ridden to Canmore and back on a tank full of fuel which is about $6.00 versus driving my car which would costs on an average $50.00. The thrill of riding on the highway and of course the money I save on fuel can be used for vacation and other important things. I have no problem navigating through any hills and can keep up in any city traffic condition. With the growing population of automobile in our city and throughout

the world; one sure way I know of is that I am contributing for the preservation of the environment and save city money for road repairs. Not only it gives very minimal carbon footprints; it has a very tiny environmental impact but also only a fraction of space it occupy on the road; with its lightweight the wear on the road is negligible. After the snow disappears from the ground and safe enough to ride, the scooter club I belong to meet every Tuesdays and Sundays of the week for lunch, coffee and fellowship then we ride wherever the leader takes us for a few hours in a city quadrant decided at that time. During the August long weekend, many riders from across the province come and ride together. This is the most anticipated weekend of the year as there are plenty of fun activities for young and old. Riding a scooter however requires all the legalities as driving an automobile. A class 6 driver’s license is a mandatory requirement. To get this, it is required to do a written test then must pass a road test. During my test, my

examiner instructed me to take Deerfoot Trail. I have never taken the trail as I wasn’t confident enough to ride at a high speed and through heavy traffic. I didn’t have a choice, within a few seconds I found myself side-by-side with semis and pick-up trucks zooming pass me and I was so worried I would get sucked under them. I was so relieved when it was over and passed the test. Upon acquiring a license, one can ride any motorcycle from 100 CCs to huge Harleys. This summer I planned to explore many places in our national parks with my scooter. If you happen to see an all white Vespa and white helmet give me a wave or when I’m filling up at the gas station say hi and you may inquire like many just about every time I gas up how much it costs to fill up. I simply point to the meter and most often it shows under $6.00. I also ask the same question, this time it was a driver of a pickup truck, he pointed to the meter and shows $95.00 and he’ll drive it for a week – yeah I said the reason is clear.

THE JOURNEY OF A MOTHER…… HER JOYS AND PAINS PAINS OF A MOTHER Story # 1--- Where did I go wrong? A mother lamented. She and her husband gave their best as good parents to their only daughter. They sent her to prestigious catholic school/college, provided her needs and wants in life, and gave her the proper way of rearing her personal being and well- upbringing. Could it be perhaps bad influences, wrong choice set of friends and spoiling her, that she became addicted to’ barkadas’, to alcohol and cigarettes, later to using illegal drug and became user-abuser? Seeing their daughter made mistakes, her struggles and hard time to cope and reap the consequences, the errors/ wrong acts she has done in her life- all they could do as parents was to keep on praying, guiding and giving their

support, but the daughter was imprisoned for being drug courier and user. There in her lonely prison cell she committed suicide, because of the shame she gave to her parents. For her last act, she begged and asked forgiveness to her parents which was mentioned in her final note to them. Story # 2---- A mother has to endure the pain, heartache and abuse from her husband, but has to stay in the marriage for her family, children’s sake and welfare, has to silently suffer to live with him, in the hope that it will bring benefit and be good for her five young children. She has tried to give her children a family that will support their educational needs. She has to go on with this kind of life and continue her journey of being a mother, but until how long in time

could she bear the painful moments with the circumstances she is into? Story # 3----Forever in this mother’s life could her heartache be healed for the great loss of her dearly daughter and son at their prime years of life. It is so vast that when your children died ahead of you, there is deep sorrow of living daily with that wrenched pain, with the thought that your beloved children did not live long enough to feel how much you love them, you have to carry on the pain/remorse in the entire of your life. The hole in this mother’s heart is never filled again. Story # 4 ----It breaks a mother’s heart when her very own son is in prison, while many who are not in her shoes to ever know the pain that resides in her

heart, especially when she is looked upon as an outcast by the society she lives in, by her circle of friends for having a murderer son. She loves her son, advises him to repent and keep on praying, asking forgiveness for the criminal acts he committed in life. She has to carry that unbearable pain in the chest and endure the insults/bad comments, judgments that the people around remarked on what kind of a mother she is. How long she has to endure the pain, she doesn’t know. Mothers in these stories are the true pillars of strength. I have interviewed some experienced mothers and have offered their advice to those mothers, who are having a rough time with their children. Being a good mother does not mean that you have to be like an emotional pin cushion or an abused doormat to be walked on constantly by your children. Yes, we love them and have always cared for them, but do

not make the mistake of getting into the habit of taking punishment from them, which allow you to be worn down and hurting from their very hurtful words. As a mother, though old and makulit or repetitive, we demand respect that not only we deserve but a respect that we have earned. I don’t want to become one of those mothers who are brow-beaten by their children because they are trying to make up. Every generation has their own way of doing things but one thing that we must know for sure, is that while fads and gimmicks will come and go, PRINCIPLES/ VALUES never die. If we, mothers have to take years to instill the proper values and just principles within our children, if we take our responsibility seriously upon us and hopefully pray for the best- our children will consider, take heed and feel the comfort of the love and support we give. They will know and realize

diaryofilipino.com

that they will always have something of substance to come home. When there are some children would say that you haven’t done enough, they scorn you as the worst mom because they can’t have their way and even compare you to other mothers, who could not even measure up to you in any category, know that God has HIS tally of your struggles and sacrifices. God in the end will undo all wrongs against you and make the pain vanish. No matter what you can think of, there is no other position more difficult and more important that has more of a ripple effect to the foundation of our society, people and world. It is the position of humbly being a good mother, her sacrifices and difficult journey to motherhood. Let us seek GOD’s light to guide us. Let us be a blessing to our children no matter what. Blessings will come our way for being a good mother, for our LORD loves us. HAPPY MOTHERS DAY

Every season bring its own joy and pleasure. Four seasons and the changes are impossible to explain but these jokes might help.

Spring Jokes When do monkeys fall from the sky? During Aperil showers! Can February March? No, but April May! Why is everyone so tired on April 1? Because they’ve just finished a long, 31 day March! What season is it when you are on a trampoline? Spring-time! What flowers grow on faces? Tulips (Two-lips)! Why are trees very forgiving? Because in the Fall they “Let It Go” and in the Spring they “turn over a new leaf”. Why is the letter A like a flower? A bee (B) comes after it! When do people start using their trampoline? Spring-Time Q. When do monkeys fall from the sky? A. During Ape-ril showers! Knock, knock! Whos there? Spring. Spring who? I might spring over your house one day!

Canadian springs are unpredictable- teasing us with summer-like temperatures one minute before dumping a fresh load of snow the next. With the changing conditions, when should you change your winter tires? A general rule to follow is once the average daily temperatures are over +7C, you should change those winter tires for summer or all-season versions. Different types of tires are made with different rubber compounds, which allow them to be optimized for a different temperature range. If we use a tire outside of its comfort zone, it reacts poorly. All-season tires begin to lose their grip once temperatures drop below +7C and are useless for any temperature below -10C. Summer tires turn as hard as hockey pucks in the winter, while winter

Mannychanic

tires start losing grip as temperatures climb. Winter tires are designed with flexible treads for below-zero temperatures and have more treads to allow the tire to grip onto ice. In warmer temperatures, these features become counterproductive. As the tire turns, the tread comes into contact with the hot pavement and the friction creates more heat. This causes the tread to open further, increasing the surface area of the tire making contact with the pavement, resulting in more heat. You could say it’s a vicious cycle. The tread wears down quickly, impacting your ability to brake and forcing you to replace the tires In fact, studies showed drivers had less control of their vehicles and took longer to safely stop when they were driving with winter tires in warmer months. Impairment began when drivers reached a speed of 50 km per hour, even in dry conditions. At speeds over 85 km/h, they had lost all control of their vehicle.

Tire swap In wet road conditions, it took even less speed for the drivers to feel the impact. While we’re almost guaranteed to experience freak May-snowstorms, rest assured your all-season tires should be able to handle it for a day. Just give yourself extra time when driving, slow down, and increase your following distance. Whatever you do, don’t be tempted to keep your winter tires on year-round just to save money. You could be more at risk by driving with winter tires on hot pavement. In the long run, changing your tires to match the appropriate weather conditions could also reduce your chances of an accident.

Take note: When you are swapping your tires, be sure to take a look at the amount of tread left on your winter tires. For the best traction in snow, tire manufacturers recommend a minimum tread depth of

W

6/32 of an inch. For comparison, most tires come with new with about 11/32 to 12/32 of an inch tread depth. If you do not have the recommended amount, now is a good time to plan ahead to save money for new winter tires well in advance of the next winter season.

WIKIBOOKS

Rim (Wheel)

Diameter (effective): distance between the bead seats (for the tire), as measured in the plane of the rim and through the axis of the hub which is or will be attached, or which is integral with the rim. Width (effective): separation distance between opposed rim flanges. The flange-to-flange width of a rim should be a minimum of three-quarters of the tire section width. And the maximum rim width should be equal to the width of the tire tread. Type: Depends on the type of vehicle and tire. There are various rim profiles, as well as the number of rim components. Modern passenger vehicles and tubeless tires typically use one-piece rims with a “safety” rim profile. The safety feature helps keep the tire bead held to the rim under adverse conditions by having a pair of safety humps extending inwardly of the rim toward the other tire bead seat from an outer contoured surface of the rim.[2] Heavy vehicles and some trucks may have a removable multi-piece rim assembly consisting of a base that mounts to the wheel and axle. They then have either a side ring or a side and lock ring combination. These parts are removable from one side for tire mounting, while the opposite side attached to the base has a fixed flange. Vehicle performance:

Because the rim is where the tire resides on the wheel and the rim supports the tire shape, the dimensions of the rims are a factor in the handling characteristics of an automobile. For example: Overly wide rims in relation to the tire width for a particular car may result in more vibration and less comfortable ride because the sidewalls of the tire have insufficient curvature to flex properly over rough driving surfaces. Oversized rims may cause the tire to rub on the body or suspension components while turning. Overly narrow rims in relation to the tire width may cause poor handling as the tire may distort sideways under fast cornering. On motorcycles, a narrow rim will alter the tire profile, concentrating tire wear in a very small area during cornering, with a smaller contact patch during braking. On bicycles, the optimum tire width is approximately twice the rim’s internal width (e.g., a 35 mm tire on a rim with an ETRTO 17mm internal width) or one-and-a-half times the rim’s external width. [citation needed] Considerable variation outside this range is safe, but very wide tires on a narrow rim can overstress the rim and damage the tire sidewalls, whereas very narrow tires on a wide rim give a hard ride and can result in a high-pressure tire blowing off.

Fresh Foils Foggy, Repeats as FCBL Champs

DF

Martiniano Lopez

Don’t ever underestimate the heart of a champion. Rudy Tomjanovich, the legendary coach of the Houston Rockets, uttered those words in the mid ‘90s when his team beat Shaquille O’Neal and the heavily-favoured Orlando Magic to repeat as NBA champions. Had he witnessed the Fresh-Foggy Gorilla championship game last March 26, Mr. Tomjanovich, most probably, would have made the same declaration. Before the championship, the odds for defending champion Fresh to successfully defend their FCBL Briones Cup title was about even. Even though they were the defending champs, Fresh was facing a serious threat, as Foggy Gorilla, their formidable arch rivals, beat them twice in the elimination stage. But with Steve Trinidad, also known as The Finisher, and point guard Jerome Makasiar on hand to wage battle against Foggy, the defending champions, at least, had a fighting chance of retaining their title. Before a full house Glenmore Christian Academy gym, the signs seemed to point to a Fresh victory early on, as Makasiar struck with

six quick points, helping the defending champions to an early 19-8 lead. But then, disaster struck. With three minutes to go in the opening period, Makasiar went down with an injury after he was inadvertently hit in the head on a drive to the basket. Still, showing the heart of a champion, Fresh withstood the blow, erecting a 25-13 first quarter lead. Fresh maintained that advantage, leading 37-28 at halftime, as Trinidad remained hot on offence, pouring in 15 first half points. But as expected, Foggy smelled blood and began to mount a counter attack. High-flying forward Paul Gulfo and guard Aris Dela Paz, the regular season MVP, combined for 17 third quarter points, as Foggy tied the count, 52-52, entering the final frame. From there, it was a slugfest galore, as both teams went toe-to-toe, with neither leading by more than four points the rest of the way. With 1:16 left in the game, Gulfo put Foggy ahead, 70-67, with a three-pointer. Trinidad, however, countered with two charities a few seconds later, as Fresh closed in, 70-69. With 48 seconds left, post Jai De Jesus put Foggy in front, 72-69, on a Dela Paz assist.

Trinidad fought back with two free throws to keep it tight, 71-72, with less 35 ticks to go. And then the wild finale. Foggy had a chance to ice the game, but Dela Paz muffed a three pointer with 14 seconds left in the game. That set up the stage for The Finisher. Trinidad drove to the hoop with barely a second left, and banked in the championship-winning shot. Fresh captured its second consecutive FCBL Briones Cup by the slimmest of margins, 73-72. “This definitely ranks as one of the toughest games we’ve played as a team. We’re happy to pull it out in the end,” Mark David, this year’s Best Coach, expressed afterwards. Trinidad, who finished with a game-high 37 points, was adjudged the Finals MVP. Gulfo carried the fight for Foggy with season-high 32 points. Regular season MVP Dela Paz supported him with 11 markers. In the bronze medal game, Jenrich Fast Cargo completed their remarkable turnaround by beating MJ BBQ, 75-74, in another thriller. Marc Norona led Jenrich with 16 points, while Omar Villaroman scored 36 points for the third runner-up BBQ Makers.

Ricardo Summer Asuncion Marife Cocjin Magnolia Magazine WRITER/BLOGGER

I know it feels like the snow will never let up, especially since it’s been snowing on and off. But the weather is getting noticeably warmer, right? Depending on where you are in the country; whether the cherry blossoms may have started to to bloom or you’re just recovering from the last true snowfall of the season and waiting for the snow to melt, I promise, Spring is here and summer is just around the corner. While we wait on the weather to warm up, it’s time to start prepping our skin for the warmer weather. Yes, there is such a thing. Canadian Prairie winters are harsh and leaves our skin feeling dry, rough and sometimes even cracked. As the weather and environment changes, however, it’s important to understand that our body adapts to the seasonal climate. Asian skin handles formulation from products differently than our caucasian friends. Most products that are in stores have different results. Here are a few things you should remember in order to keep your skin prepped, so it will look and feel fresh and healthy, just in time for spring.

1. Exfoliate. Face (lips too) and Body Don’t wait until the weather warms up. You should be exfoliating at least once or twice a week. Exfoliation deals with removing the dead skin cells that naturally occur on the outermost layer of the skin. As skin cells age, they die and eventually slough off; exfoliation hastens this process of sloughing off. Very important in maintaining the appearance of healthier, younger, glowing skin. Foreo Luna, $139 | Caudalie Deep Cleansing Exfoliator, $34

3. Hydrate on the inside While hydrating and exfoliating is important, more so is keeping hydrated with your daily intake of 8 tall glasses of water a day - based on a 2000 calorie count intake. You should be drinking more, if your caloric intake is more. Side note: drinking water aids in goals for weight loss. Keep your water on you at all times using this Eau Good Water Bottle with Active Charcoal Filter, $19.99

2. Serums and Brightening Treatments If you don’t currently use serums on your face, then you may want to start using them now. According to Beauty Editor [www.beautyeditor. com] , Serums are “topical treatment products that efficiently deliver active ingredients—things like antioxidants, vitamins and moisturizing agents—into the skin.” Being the thinnest product that you will ever apply on the top of your bare skin that penetrates into the pores rather quickly. Odacité has amazing concentrated serums that leave your skin fresh and glowing. A couple drops go a long way. Odacité AC+R Youthful Glow Face Serum, $55

Here are some good tips which will help you to kick start or reboot your exercise journey. If you were out of the exercise circle lately or/ and wanted to start and don’t know where to start? Start visualizing but push the action button once visualizing is done. It will be hard and full of temptations but you have to always have a strong spirit and desire and always think of the final result! But what’s the final result? Well that leads us to the first step. Visualizing what you want is very important. Before hopping on this amazing adventure, you have to decide what your fitness goals are! The body you wanted to achieve, the strength, the six packs, endurance, wanted to learn a sport like swimming or whatever your goals are. Think about a program for workouts that can greatly achieve what you aim for and you must do it. Also, think about a certain diet that will fit your body.

It means each body have a different response when it comes to controlling your intake. So listen to your tummy. Let’s talk about your intake while you also consider what you thought of. 1. Water helps metabolic wastes get removed from your body and will also give you a decent amount of energy so always drink water as it helps you a lot. 2. You should know when, amount and quality of carbs, fats and sugar you can consume without harming your body. Majority of the food we eat transforms into sugar including carbs. Fats on the other hand helps you lose fat as well depends on what type you consume. 3. Eat every 3 hours at 4-6 meals. By doing so, you make your pump up your metabolism while keeping your mind sharp. 4. Hiking, walking, swim-

ming, shadow boxing, etc. All of these are great ways to keep you fit while providing a healthy environment away from the gym setting and it is helpful when you are on holidays or travelling because of work. Every day you should have a walk of at least one hour and you should keep it that way for the rest of the days you are not in the gym. You can even walk from home to your workplace and back. After, you can add up a 20min cardio training that suits your body. Very important and please don’t skip this: Always start with a warm-up, then a cool-down for 5 to 10 minutes at a low intensity. 5. Then, you can pump it up and hire a personal trainer that will know everything you need going from workouts to a food advice. By taking on a fitness program not only you get results faster but also safely. Remember, it will be hard to get fit and healthy and there’s a long road ahead of you but never give up!

Length, Meaning & Siomai Love! Direction Fr. Edmund Vargas COLUMNIST

The proclamation of the Lord’s Passion on Palm Sunday and Good Friday reminds us that Christianity is not about speed, short-cuts or anesthesia. In truth, it is about length, pain and suffering. We now live in a world where pain and waiting are to be avoided at all cost. We have acquired a mentality that has a very low tolerance for anything that involves length, mistakes and suffering. Our waiting has been reduced by super-fast procedures: superfast computers, automatic teller machines, fast food, instant messages, instant coffee and instant marriages. Our threshold for pain and suffering has been minimized by socalled miracles of medical

science and technology: Advil, tylenol forte, abortion pill and mercy-killing. Even our relationships have been adversely affected by what we call a “computer” mentality which rejects human error and waiting time. Such mentality disposes us to seek quick solutions to longterm problems, especially in marriage and family life. We have developed a passion for painlessness and velocity. And we have lost our sense of direction and meaning. Long time ago, Chase & Sanborn, a coffee company, ran an advertisement which read “Happiness does not come in an instant!” Of course, we know that the difference between brewed coffee and instant coffee is the quality that comes with the process.

Besides being person-oriented, Christian life is process-oriented. Resurrection comes only after passion and death. Christianity does not take away our problems and fears. It gives us the strength to face and endure them. It gives us a sense of Christian purpose and meaning. It makes us understand the meaning of our struggle for sanity. Our life can be short and quick. But it has to have direction and meaning. Let us re-learn our sense of Christian purpose, which is rooted in the mysteries we celebrate these days. Life in the fast lane requires a consciousness of our Christian sense of direction. We have to hold on together with our Christian vision, if we don’t want to lose our way in this maze of quick fixes.

April Horoscope The Aries: A financial decision that seems obvious to you may surprise others, but your instincts will outweigh any advice. However, be smart and not hasty. The Taurus: Create a more beautiful world for yourself and know that you can make it last. Feel secure about everything that you truly love. The Gemini: People will appreciate your cheerfulness and the charm of your inner child, but you won’t do it for them. You’ll do it for you. Go ahead and smile! The Cancer: If you’ve wanted to step up into a more luxurious - if expensive - circle of friends and associates, there could be some introductions coming your way.

The Leo: Friends, neighbors, or siblings could surprise you with a show of friendliness. It may not be flowers, but it could come in material form just as well as compliments. The Virgo: It is a great time to examine more deeply a subject or matter that has strong emotional appeal. You can master the basics of something that turns an event or occasion your way. The Libra: Your life may take on a deeper focus, encouraging you to look beneath the surface, especially when resolving matters that need an in-depth perspective. The Scorpio: This month may bring great deal of fresh, powerful insight that enriches your current relationship. Find a new way to make love more stable and reliable.

The Sagittarius: Create comfort of how healthy life can be. You should be able to reduce stress and enjoy a less hectic schedule. You’ll still be busy, of course. The Capricorn: Find more pleasure in something that has been barely amusing. See the value in something or some action that you may have dismissed as frivolous. The Aquarius: A disturbing feeling or impression may simply vanish with no explanation or discussion. Let life become more comfortable, lovely, and loving. Worry later, if ever, about the reasons why. The Pisces: Peace and quiet may be scarce, but you’ll cherish every moment. More favorite music or meditation can help you keep your balance.

Ymor H. We’re just about to turn around when, at the last second, I saw the sign of a newly opened Chicken Restaurant. My wife and a friend entered the packed restaurant as a birthday party was winding down. We were told the store’s official opening would be during the least week of March. Located in one of the bays of a strip mall south east corner of Deerfoot trail and 130 Ave S.E., Fritou is the newest fast food chicken outlet in the vast commercial area, north of Mackenzie Town. The franchise’s signature chicken was definitely delicious. We might be biased but relatively their chicken has less oil. Onion

rings were at par or better than others in the market. And the fries were longer and plumper! On top of these menu items were spaghetti and beef curry. I’d be lying if I said my mouth didn’t water. I asked the owners, Maireen and Mary, why they served spaghetti and beef curry. They showed me the back of the menu and explained that these were part of the specific store’s offerings. They were allowed to add variety (interestingly popular with Asians). The title on the back read “Chef’s Specialty”, and included 2 corny dogs, beefy curry, embutido, rice burger and Siomai Love.

Cool! I’ve seldom encountered a national food franchise that permits this kind of menu alongside its signature food offering. Chef’s Specialty surely adds value, choice and a novel experience to craving souls. We enjoyed the variety, quality, taste and reasonable price of the food on the platter and left the place with one unique and remarkable observation. A short trip to Fritou at 130 Ave S.E. is worth the experience. We had the famous Fritou Chicken with beef curry on the side. 10/10 would return and recommend. Check them out at www.fritou130.ca or drop by and place an order!

“Siguro nga minsan kailangan nating madapa kasi may mas tamang paraan ng pagtayo. Kailangan umiyak kasi di lahat kayang itago ng tawa. Kailangan nating masaktan kasi meron pa tayong dapat matutunan’’ Dear Madame KC, Hello to you and to all readers of Diaryo Filipino. Last year naghiwalay kami ng husband ko. May baby girl na po kami and unfortunately I was again preggy that time ng maghiwalay kami. Wala pa kaming 1month na hiwalay may nagbalita na sa akin na may iba na sya. Sobrang nasaktan ako dahil ganun-ganun na lang niya naitapon ang marriage namin. At ang kinagalit ko pa single mom pa ang pinalit nya sa akin. Galit na galit ako and sobrang nasasaktan.

HELP ME NAMAN. . . Olga Dear Olga, Alam mo lahat naman may hangganan, kahit pagmamahal. Ginawa mo na ang lahat to save your family. Pero do you think maayos yan kung siya mismo ayaw ng ayusin pa? Kung tutuusin kaya mo siyang iwanan at mag simula ng bagong buhay pero mas pinaiiral mo ang

puso mo. Let go. Why do you cling to pain? There is nothing you can do about the wrongs of yesterday. It is not yours to judge. Why hold on to the very thing which keeps you from hope and love? Hindi porke’t nakipaghiwalay ka sa kanya ay isa ka ng talunan sa mata ng kabit niya. Instead isipin mo na kaya mo at ipikita mo sa kanila na kaya mong mabuhay without your husband. You have your daughter, make her your inspiration. Magtira ka naman ng konting respeto sa sarili mo. Pinapakita mo lang sa kanila at sa sarili mo na sobrang mahina ka. You need to be strong. Mahirap gawin pero syempre yun ang kailangan. You and your daughter deserve a better life. Goodluck, Madame KC
