May 5 is Alberta Election Day Boodle Feast

Alberta Premier Jim Prentice announced the May 5 election– a year before required under provincial law – saying his plan to wean the province from its dependence on oil revenues demands an endorsement from the people. Last month’s budget contained a host of tax hikes and austerity measures as the province wrestles with billions of dollars in lost revenue due to the steep plunge in oil prices over the last six months. Meanwhile Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi noted that the 70 of 87 legislature seats the Tories held at dissolution was a “pretty good mandate.” He said he’s concerned the election could see historically low voter turnout and called
, 2001, 2002 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
on Calgarians to get engaged over the next four weeks. “What I’m hearing from Calgarians over and over again is they’re not happy about his election, they’re not happy about spending up to $30 million on the election,” he said.“But they are not convinced that there are really good options and choices for them.” Nenshi said it’s critical that people vote. “Whether we want the election or not, we have got an election and an election is an opportunity for all of us to make our voices heard and the best way to make your voice heard is to vote,” he said. Prentice’s approval ratings have dropped precipitously after this election announcement. From more than 50 per cent in polls conducted in December, Prentice has registered an approval rating of between 22 and 29 per cent in two recent polls, with his disapproval rating topping out at 60 per cent or higher. The budget seems to have been a catalyst for this decline. Polling by Insights West suggested that 78 per cent of Albertans thought the budget would have a negative effect on their house-
holds, and a majority did not think that the fall in oil prices justified it. Fears of change amid an unstable economical climate also appear low. ThinkHQ found that just 30 per cent of Albertans agreed that a change of government would make things worse on that front. The experience of the 2012 election, however, looms large over this campaign. Every poll published during the writ period suggested that Wildrose would win. Instead, the Tories were re-elected with a large majority of seats. A warranted skepticism has defined Alber-
tans’ views of the polls since. But leaving aside the possibility that the polls are just wrong (and the record of the polls in 2012 is far more nuanced than that), there are good reasons to believe the results on election night will differ markedly from where the numbers are now. An updated list of candidates are seeking party nominations to stand in Alberta’s next provincial election on May 5, 2015. One of the many reasons a family moved to a certain community is the safety measure or low crime rate. That belief goes the same way too many immigrants and refugees who arrived here in Canada. But the question is; what makes a community safe? In an unpublicized case in 2003, seven young men robbed and knifed the 16-year old nephew of a Canada Safety Council staff member, who happened to be walking through a downtown park in a major Canadian city. Last March 14, my 20 year old daughter was randomly picked and assaulted by two drunken teens in Somerset C-train. Fortunately, she managed to escape away from them. She received head concussion and bruises due to their violent punches. Like that case in 2003, no one helped my daughter or called the police. If the attackers had been caught, they could have faced criminal charges instead of likely going on to commit more crimes. Someone in the crowd must have had a cell phone. Why didn’t anyone at least call the police or get help? Numerous incidents like this happen in communities across Canada. Police estimate that only one out of every 10 swarming is reported.
Don’t Just Stand There - Do Something “A community where people intervene for the good of others is a safer community.” The victims, often teenagers, are left scarred and traumatized for life. Such attacks lead many Canadians to fear their communities are unsafe. But what really makes community safe?
Henrik Ibsen said “A community is like a ship everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm.”
A caring and healthy community, founded on the principles of fairness and equity, where neighbourhoods thrive and residents feel safe is an ideal concept to many. But safety in the neighborhood should not only be one the top priority of the government alone, it should also be the priority of the public. At this time of increasing crimes, we need caring people who are connected and involved in their community. Family, community and government share responsibility for the safety, protection and well being of every one especially of the children and the youth. Bystanders make a
difference. When Cpl. Nathan Cirillo was shot in Ottawa several bystanders quickly went to his aid. Barbara Winters, a lawyer and former medic in the Naval Reserves, rushed to Cirillo’s side, trying her best to do everything she could to save him. She was joined by Margaret Lerhe, a nurse at a nearby hospital and Martin Magnan, a National Defense employee who also had Navy experience. According to Winters, Cirillo was awake and conscious while she tried in vain to save him, telling him he was loved the whole time. “Your family loves you. Your parents are so proud of you. Your military family loves you. All the people here, we’re working so hard for you. Everybody loves you,” she repeatedly told Cirillo. When recounting the event, Winters explained that all involved were calm while helping Cirillo and understood the gravity of the situation. “No one was hysterical. Everyone was so calm. Everyone was entirely focused on the soldier and on helping him.” When asked why she kept telling Cirillo he was loved, Winters responded with what anyone in pain would ever want to hear.
“When you are dying, you need to be told how loved you are.” These words based on the eulogies in Cpl. Cirillo’s funeral had helped his family in their grieving process. Another great example is the tip on the Boston marathon explosion. Following the twin explosions in downtown Boston, it was a cell phone picture submitted by someone in the crowd that helped identify Suspect Number Two. Law enforcers asked the public to keep a trained eye and ear on their communities. They believe that this cooperation works because it reduces opportunities for crime to occur and for culprits to be apprehended. But they also stressed that crime or neighborhood watch groups are not vigilantes and should not assume the role of the police. The law enforcers do not want you to put yourself in danger they only ask you to be alert, observant, and caring— and to report suspicious activity or crimes immediately to the police. Following unresolved crimes, police departments often rely on the help of their local citizens and communities for case-making tips and
information to make progress. Different methods are created to incentivize people coming forward and sharing valuable information. News channels and police websites offer crime hotline numbers and promise anonymity. For serious crimes, cash rewards may be offered. In one case, a police department published billboards asking for tips in a child murder case. Police and citizens must both understand the value of working collaboratively to solve difficult cases. Smartphone technology is already becoming a huge asset in providing evidence to solve crimes, as citizens are constantly equipped with a recording device and GPS within their cell phones. In today’s fast-paced communication age, the ability of each of us to contribute to our own well-being and increase community safety is ever-growing. While law enforcement will always be the gatekeepers of the law, technology has allowed us several tools to collaborate and help solve more crimes. As members of our towns and cities, it’s everyone’s responsibility to speak up. So next time- don’t just stand there….do something.

not the time to repent in all the sins that we have committed, lent is not the answer for all the mistakes we made in our lives. To sacrifice in our life, and give more power to those in need in every moment in our life is the best way to show our love to our fellowmen. But they say that Lent or Good Friday is the time for repentance. We must put this in our minds that we have 365 days a year to consider because every step we made and wrong deeds we did counts in our daily lives. Don’t forget that what had happened in our life will be considered a part of our downfall and success. Be yourself we can’t avoid to fall. Many of us are now realising that it is time to face reality. Each individual are now growing and aging the good life. Our population is growing and more diverse. Elders are looking the second half of their life. Everyone
must experience the fruitful and success of aging. Life is a basic and not absolutely good. Life is Holy deserving of respect and reverence. It is the only way to move forward. Everything we do comes from our inner self, we need a spiritual growth. Don’t be discouraged and you will live in another level of life. Your awareness to yourself. Plan for your good future, the emptiness in your heart, your relationship with others is a big part to your aging. Seeing ourselves by not comparing to others. Kindness means taking the tender approach with patience and compassion. There is nothing in this world that can fill up the emptiness of the human heart. If in case you are disturbed by the reality, ask to yourself “Why Am I Disturbed.” The refusal to accept the reality will result to each of mortification and frustration. We have weakness and
important and valuable and should never be treated as something that can be thrown away. Life is infinitely good and wonderful, let’s not sigh or lonely. Let’s be happy every time, because life is short and life is good. Happy Easter to all.

16 March 2015 Philippine Ambassador to Canada, H.E. Petronila P. Garcia, visited Calgary, Alberta on 14 March 2015 and met with key Alberta government officials and members of the Filipino community. Ambassador Garcia met, for the second time in a week, the Premier of Alberta, Hon. Jim Prentice, together with Minister Ric McIver of Jobs, Skills,
Training and Labour and Minister Manmeet Bhullar of Infrastructure. Premier Prentice acknowledged the significant contributions of the growing number of Filipino community in Alberta, particularly in Calgary. Ambassador Garcia thanked the Premier for warmly receiving her in the dynamic city of Calgary and expressed optimism that Alberta will continue to be a strong economic powerhouse in Canada. She gave Premier Prentice an information packet on tourism in the Philippines, including
trade and investment opportunities in the country. Ambassador Garcia and Minister McIver had extensive discussions on a number of important issues affecting the Filipino community in the province, such as the changes to the temporary foreign workers program, the bridging work permit, education and recognition of credentials. Ambassador Garcia also met with officials of the ATB Financial, who informed her about the bank’s “Filipino initiative” and support to various community projects.
Ambassador Garcia was warmly received by the Filipino community in Calgary and received the city’s special welcome and hospitality with a “White Hat” ceremony. In a dialogue with leaders and members of the Filipino community, Ambassador Garcia provided an update on the status of the proposed establishment of a full-fledged career Consulate General in Calgary. She underlined that the Embassy and the Philippine Consulate General in Vancouver are working closely to realize this at the earliest possible time. Ambassador Garcia was accompanied during her visit by Consul General Neil Ferrer, who informed the community of the Consulate’s plan to conduct 16 consular outreach services in Alberta this year, with nine outreach services scheduled in Calgary. Ambassador Garcia encouraged the community to register as overseas voters and take part in the national elections in 2016.

Changes had been happening at Calgary’s Outdoor Way of the Cross every Good Friday for the last few years. The past few years has seen the growing number of participants attending the traditional Good Friday event. Such that, organizers have put in some changes to make this year still a solemn event. The Way of the Cross every Good Friday is an event commemorating the final hours of Christ. Each Catholic follow the 14 stations depicting the events that lead to Christ’s crucifixion. At the outdoor Way of the Cross, young and old walk until they finish the last station. Some parent bring in their children in their strollers. As a participant the other previous years, I could see the increasing participation of Calgary’s Catholics, especially of the kababayan’s. The Filipino presence in the event is noticed starting from Ed Obligacion who has been the coordinator for cross bearers. In the crowd control, Filipinos are noticeable, as in the readers,
cross bearers and in the choir. Comparing photos from way back when and now, there is no doubt that Filipinos had helped to make this event grow bigger. In the past 2 years, the diocese had been calling for volunteers for the event. One of their source of volunteers is the Knights of Columbus which I belong to one of the councils. So I decided to join brothers in the crowd control. While I was there, it was a truly different experience. These guys were getting stressed by the people who were pushing their way in to be cross bearers. It was tough to understand that this is happening since this was supposed to be a solemn event practiced with prayer and meditation. Last year, I thought it was the worse. When the procession was going around St. Mary’s, some people had to tell some kababayan’s off. Same thing, they were wanting to be cross bearers and not following the procession. At some point, people were behind the pick-up carrying the sound system and the group carrying the cross. What would continued on page 5

have been good is to have an event that’s organized and safe. So for this year, the diocese has elected to advertise that cross bearers need to sign-up to participate. Also advertised for volunteer to help in the crowd control group. They expect to have more people participating for this year’s outdoor Way of the Cross. At last Saturday’s training session, a few good men showed up to volunteer. Definitely this time, there were
more specifics as to what needed to be done. With what is happening in the world right now, a few eyes and ears are also needed to look at the surroundings. In any event, there is always a possibility that some will create trouble. By being aware at all times, this will minimize that threat. It is good to look around and see what other people are doing. Also not too long ago, there was a fire that hit a building on the procession route. With that, there
will be a slight change in the procession route for this year. It should be exciting to see how this goes. Its not too long now until Good Friday, I pray that people will heed to the pleas of the organizers. We hope to have the cooperation of all participants so we will have a safe and meaningful event. If you are not able to carry the cross this year, there is always next year and so forth. Better yet, sign-up for it the next time there is a call.

March 15th 2015, It was a night to remember for most of the fans as Parokya niEdgar celebrated their 20th anniversary with a series of live concert performances in North America, and one of them was held here in Calgary Alberta at Grey Eagle Casino. I will break down my review in several sections but first, let me tell you a brief history of this Iconic and Award winning Filipino Band. Parokya ni Edgar was formed in 1993 but before that, they used to call their group as “Comic Relief” and through time, they evolve into what they’re most popular known as. The Band is famous for its original rock novelty songs and often-satirical covers of popular songs both foreign and local. Some of their very popular songs are “Buloy”, “Inuman na”, “Mr. Suave”, “Mang Jose”, “Papa colgne”, “Bagsakan”, and many more. So I’ll start my review with the band it self. The show was packed with good old school performances. Chito Miranda (the band’s lead man) started the show with a bow to show the band’s respect and appreciation to the fans. And further than that, He even shared

his beer with the fans all though out the show to set the mood of the audience. The whole show was full of fun due to the band’s lead man’s great sense of humor and stage presence. When it comes to the band’s actual performances, you would notice a great improvement in their act compared to several years ago. They indeed became a well-seasoned performers. They sound solid and beefy with their powerful licks and riffs combined with powerful lyrics and vocals that moved the audience all around. The venue it self is very spacious and I love the theater style seats. The only thing I’ve noticed they became short is the sound system and lighting. I’m not sure if it is just a sound engineering thing but the balance between the low, mid, and high frequency was not definite. I’ve noticed a slight distortion especially on the low frequency so in effect, the mid and high frequency are barely noticeable. The lighting was not you would expect for a rock and roll concert, they only used two narrow spotlights and few accent lights the whole time as if you are watching a ballad concert. Although these things are very minor of a concern for a casual concert audience, for music lovers and seasoned live concert audience, these

We are merely days away from another huge Marvel Cinematic Universe event, the Avengers: Age of Ultron. Its companion T.V. series, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. made a rebound on its ratings last year after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Will Age of Ultron also affect A.O.S. in a certain way? “Absolutely, the great thing about what Marvel is doing which is something that’s very innovative,..incorporating a show like ours with their cinematic world.” says actress Ming-Na Wen who plays
Agent Melinda May at the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. panel at the Calgary Comic Expo last Saturday. The series’ season 1 episode “Turn, Turn, Turn” changes the dynamics of S.H.I.E.L.D. when sleeper Hydra agents were exposed, including Agent Grant Ward, played by Brett Dalton, who was also present at the panel. When asked if he was being cautious into getting deep portraying a villainous role after the late Heath Ledger’s demise, Dalton went on to praise Ledger saying “He went to some scary places.” before adding “Everybody has their own way of getting to it. For me, I found out a week before and I’m not playing an iconic villain.” Ming-Na was con-

They just wrapped the series’ second season the night before their scheduled appearance at Calgary Expo. During the interview, the actors were asked about what it’s like being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Make no excuses.” Off hand, this can sound a little harsh, but think about it. Successful people tend to create their own paths and take accountability for that success. If you sit around waiting for success to knock at your door, it’s going to be a very long job hunt. Instead, market yourself for the positions you want, go out and network, start a blog, perfect your application materials -always find ways to stay proactive in your search. Let people know you’re looking for a job, as well as who you are and what you have to offer. Know what you’re good at, and leverage those strengths in your conversations with potential employers.

1. Leave pessimism at the door The economy is not fully recovered, and competition is high. The news is riddled with, “it’s not the best of times” reports. If your job-search spirits start to diminish, remember this important tip. “Disregard all of the bad news that no one is hiring. You aren’t looking for 17 million jobs; you are looking for one.” Reminding yourself of this will help you feel more optimistic and allow you to keep more doors open for opportunity.

suggests targeting individual businesses, not entire industries or sectors, and then targeting three to five people you want to work with at these companies. You cannot make a connection with a company, but you can certainly make great connections with individuals. Figure out what kind of company you want to work for, and seek out leaders in those companies. Try to locate contact information, and reach out to them via Facebook, LinkedIn or email. You’d be surprised how willing people can be to talk to you when you show initiative and interest. Maybe they don’t have a position available right now, but they might in the near future. They might also be able to point you to a connection at a similar company that does have an immediate opening. 4. Be more than a résumé “Know that your résumé will not be the reason someone hires you [although it gets your foot in the door],” Cardone cautions. “No one hires résumés, they hire people. Most disappointments [in interviews] are regarding the delivery of a personality, talent, desire and willingness.” Your résumé should be an entry point and a conversation starter, but you need to close the deal. Once it gets you in the door, make sure to show personality and bring that résumé to life. Be prepared to share success stories about projects you’ve worked on in the past, difficult situations you
were able to successfully navigate and what you learned from internships or leadership positions within university organizations. 5. Make a lasting impression. Show enthusiasm In the interview, show the employer who you are. Be professional but candid and energetic. Do your homework, and plan responses to common interview questions. Exude confidence, and let the employer know why you are the right fit for the company and the position. “Control the interview,” Cardone says. “Sell yourself. Role play the interview. Show Enthusiasm! “Act hungry,” Cardone says. “Tell them [the employer], ‘I want to work with you!’” Employers want to hire people with energy and enthusiasm. They want someone who will roll up their sleeves and hit the ground running, bringing immediate value to the company. Don’t be afraid to show you’re eager for the opportunity. Edmonton officially zonked out after March 27, 2014. From teenagers who haven’t been born yet when this band was form to a bunch of female groupies and probably your grandparent’s best friend (yup.) have all pledged their alliance to Maroon 5.Opening the concert with a slow beat of drums of somewhat like a tribal ritual and a wolf howling, the crowd went crazy as they all stand up preparing themselves of their hit song – Animals. Then Adam Levine emerged, with an overflowing sexiness even with his grey tight pants and just dark grey printed shirt. He was just simply amazing in the stage with his foot tapping habit, eyes closing and that high octave voice that most of us undoubtedly known. The nights filled with duets from the audience as the pop rock band plays different hits of their albums from One more night, Lucky strike, love somebody, maps, this love, Sunday morning, daylight and payphone. The group also made tribute to their first song that made them to the top, She will be loved-that was played acoustically. They ended the 90 minutes of set list of which, personally I would say is not enough, with –Sugar. Everyone can’t just get enough of Adam walking along the extended ramp stage with his hot pink and neon green guitar.
One fan who can’t hold her feelings, went up stage and kissed Adam in the cheek who caught him off-guard but give credits to the girl for “passing 16 security guards”. Lunar and Solar Eclipses in 2015 Visible in Manila MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) – For the third time in a two-year timespan, a “blood moon” cast an eerie glow above Earth last April 4. This total lunar eclipse was fully visible in Manila. The total lunar eclipse is sometimes called a blood moon, as the moon turns red. The total lunar eclipse brought stunning views across the world early morning hours of Saturday, April 4 (in the United States), is the third in a “lunar tetrad,” or four successive lunar eclipses with no partial lunar eclipses in between, according to Eric Edelman, the host of Slooh’s live broadcast of the event beginning Saturday at 6 a.m. EDT. Slooh frequently airs live astronomy events by using community observatories from all around the world. For those unable to view the total eclipse, you can watch the eclipse unfold live through internet coverages. After the event concludes, Slooh also showed a replay of the event. Eclipses of the Moon happen when the Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned to form an almost or exact straight line. The technical term for this is syzygy, which comes from the Greek word for being paired together. Why do Total Lunar Eclipses happen? During a total lunar eclipse, the Sun, Earth and Moon form a straight line. The Earth blocks any direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. The Sun is behind the Earth, so the Sun’s light casts the Earth’s shadow on the Moon. This shadow covers the entire Moon and causes a total lunar eclipse.
Meanwhile this year’s only total solar eclipse darkened the morning skies in parts of northern Europe and Asia last March 20. Total eclipses occur when the moon sneaks between Earth and the Sun, and the 3 bodies align precisely. The moon as seen from Earth is just broad enough to cover the solar face, creating a breath-taking silver halo in an indigo sky pocked by daytime stars. Last March 20, the moon’s shadow alighted on Earth’s surface at 0741 GMT in the eastern central Atlantic, according to Britain’s Nautical Almanac Office. A total eclipse, running from 0913 GMT to 1018 GMT, was seen along a narrow 5,800-kilometre (3,600-mile) curve in the north Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, ending at the North Pole. But it made landfall in just two places – Denmark’s Faroe Islands and the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. Other locations – Iceland, Greenland, Europe, North Africa, western and eastern Asia – had partial eclipses, ranging from 99% in Iceland to just a couple of percent or less in Iran. The eclipse wasn’t that visible in many other parts of the planet, including the Philippines – but with the help of social media it was streamed live, starting at 4:30 pm Manila time (GMT +8). For future eclipse watching, a warning: do not even attempt to look directly at the eclipse with your naked eyes – it is dangerous and can cause permanent eye damage, even blindness. They wore red, they packed patios, bars and the Saddledome, and they cheered as loud as they could. It’s been six long years since Flames fans have watched Stanley Cup playoff hockey at home in Calgary, and fans were beyond excited by April 19 Sunday’s win on home ice. Calgarians descended on the Saddledome and sunny 17th Avenue before the puck dropped, and they spent several hours making noise as their beloved Flames beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-2 in Game 3 of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. Calgary Flames is one of two teams that didn’t reach the Stanley Cup Playoffs last season and is guaranteed to be in the Western Conference Second Round this season. The Calgary Flames haven’t been in the playoffs since the 2008-09 season and haven’t won a playoff round since 2004, when they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in the Stanley Cup Final. The Vancouver Canucks missed the play-
offs last season after making it for five consecutive seasons, including twice as the Presidents’ Trophy winner. Like the Flames, the Canucks haven’t won a playoff round since they last reached the Stanley Cup Final, which was in 2011.The past three times the Flames and Canucks have met in the playoffs, the winner of the series went on to play in the Stanley Cup Final. The Canucks defeated the Flames in seven games in the 1994 Western Conference Quarterfinals and lost to the New York Rangers in the Cup Final. Calgary defeated Vancouver in seven games in the 2004 Western Conference Quarterfinals and lost to the Lightning in the Cup Final. Calgary knocked Vancouver out of the playoffs in 1983, 1984 and 1989, when the Flames won the Stanley Cup. Each time the Flames and Canucks have met in the playoffs it has been a first-round series. Calgary and Vancouver got to the playoffs this season by being two of the League’s great cardiac teams; they didn’t win easy and had to come back a lot.
The Flames and Canucks were at the top of the NHL in wins in games when they gave up the first goal. The Flames took it a step further by gaining approximately 25 percent of their points in games when they trailed after two periods by scoring more than 40 percent of their goals in the third period. Calgary made the playoffs despite losing captain and would-be Norris Trophy candidate Mark Giordano to a biceps injury with 21 games remaining. Giordano was leading NHL defensemen with 48 points through 61 games. The Flames went 12-6-3 without Giordano. Vancouver made the playoffs despite losing goalie Ryan Miller to a knee injury on Feb. 22. Miller had 28 wins, including six shutouts, a 2.47 goalsagainst average and .913 save percentage before being sidelined. Eddie Lack took over as the No. 1 goalie and the Canucks went 13-7-2 in their next 22 games. Miller played in the regular-season finale Saturday. This series will be close if it mirrors the regular season series.

No ‘Mass Deportation’ Of Temporary Foreign Workers in Canada – Baldoz Source: abs-cbnnews.com
MANILA, Philippines – Labor Secretary Rosalinda Baldoz said there is no immediate repatriation of Filipino temporary foreign workers (TFWs) in Canada after their four-year stay in the country ends. “There is no such thing as ‘mass deportation’ contrary to some news reports about it,” she said in a statement. Canada introduced the temporary foreign workers program in April 2011, allowing low-wage foreign workers to stay in the country for as long as four years. The four-year period ended on April 1, 2015, and the TFW will no longer be eligible to work in Canada under a temporary foreign worker permit for an additional four years. Baldoz said she received a report from the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Toronto, saying that some workers will be exempt from the rule that TFWs will have to leave Canada at the end of their four-year stay.
Labor Attache Leonida Romulo reported that not included in the cumulative four-year limit are any periods of more than one month spent overseas, or an authorized work break, such as parental leave and extended unpaid leave. “Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will exempt some workers from the cumulative duration regulation,” Baldoz said, quoting from the report. Also exempted are TFWs in managerial or professional occupations, those who have applied for permanent residence and have received a CSQ (Certificat de selection du Quebec) if applying as a Quebec skilled worker; a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) certificate, if applying as a provincial nominee; an approval in principle, if applying under the Live-in Caregiver Class; a positive selection decision, if apply under the Federal Skilled Worker Class; or a positive selection decision, if applying
under the Canadian Experience Class. Also exempted are TFWs employed under an international agreement, such as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the Seasonal Agricultural Program, or another agreement. Also excluded are those who are exempt from the Labor Market Opinion (LMO) process, including spouses and common-law partners
of international graduates participating in the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program and highly-skilled TFWs; charity or religious workers; entrepreneurs, intra-company transferees, researchers, and academics; and others for purposes of self-support, such as refugee claimants, or humanitarian reasons (destitute students, and holders of Temporary Resident Permits valid for at least six
months. Baldoz said the reprieve, announced by the Canadian federal government, will allow employers to apply for renewed Labour Market Impact Assessments because affected TFWs are waiting in a queue for their permanent residence applications to be processed. Canada’s CIC is providing a one-year bridging work permit to TFWs who are subject to the four-year cumulative
duration limit. Romulo noted that although Canada’s Labor Minister Jason Kenney was quick not to call the measures as exemptions, he, however, said these are intended to “assist people who re in most cases going to get their permanent residency anyway” by allowing them “to stay in Canada until that decision is made.”

Prescription drugs safer for Canadians
OTTAWA, March 25, 2015 – Recently, the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology tabled its Final Report on their four
part study on prescription pharmaceuticals in Canada. The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Senator from Ontario, is a member of the Committee
and has taken part in this study since his appointment in 2012. “This is one of the most comprehensive studies of the pharmaceuticals
conducted, and the issues surrounding prescription drugs and their entire life-cycles have brought new knowledge to Canadians including the development, approval, regulation and unintended consequences associated with their use,” said Senator Enverga in a statement. “I am very proud to have taken part in the study. It is yet another example of how the Senate, through its committees, can use its wide range of expertise among senators, and contribute constructively and directly, in a non-partisan manner, to national policy formation and legislation, like Bill C-17, Vanessa’s Law which recently became law,” he continued. The four-part study which started 3 years ago, March 28, 2013, was grouped into Clinical Trials, Post-Approval Monitoring, Off-Label Use,
and Unintended Consequences all discussed in separate interim reports. The Committee made 79 recommendations for future action, and held a round table discussion with a panel of 16 experts to address issues that spanned across several of the themes or needed further inquiry. The Final Report provides a brief overview of the four themes and the roundtable discussion in addition to some relevant updates since the start of the study. “The most worrying part of the study was that of the unintended consequences of prescription drugs. The Fourth Report includes abuse, misuse and addiction, antibiotic resistance, counterfeit and substandard drugs, drug shortages, and interactions between drugs in people using more than one for
multiple conditions. It is a Senate Report that is relevant to all Canadians who at one stage or another use prescription drugs, and will make use of prescription drugs safer for Canadians.” For more information please contact:

In most cases, getting a transmission flush every 50,000, or every two years or so is sufficient. However, there may be times when you need to get a transmission service sooner, in order to help protect your car’s transmission. There are some common signs that you need to perform a transmission service on your car or truck. Transmission Grinding or Strange Noises A vehicle transmission that is contaminated with dirt, grease and sludge can display symptoms very similar to inadequate levels of transmission fluid. When driving your vehicle, if you notice your transmission grinding or making strange sounds, you should stop the vehicle and check the transmission fluid level
W
WIKIPEDIA A machine consists of a power source and a power transmission system, which provides controlled application of the power. Merriam-Webster defines transmission as an assembly of parts including the speed-changing gears and the propeller shaft by which the power is transmitted from an engine to a live axle. Often transmission refers simply to the gearbox that uses gears and gear trains to provide speed and torque conversions from a rotating power source to another device. In British English, the term transmission refers to the whole drivetrain, including clutch, gearbox, prop shaft (for rear-wheel drive), differential, and final drive shafts. In American English, however, the term refers more specifically to the gearbox alone, and the usage details are different. The most common use is in motor vehicles, where the transmission adapts the output of the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels. Such engines need to operate at a relatively high rotational speed, which is inappropriate for starting, stopping, and slower travel. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, increasing torque in the process. Transmissions are also used on pedal bicycles, fixed machines, and where different rotational speeds

while the engine is still running (or engine off on some honda cars).Insure that the transmission fluid color is bright red and not brown or black because of grime or sludge. If the fluid level of the transmission is acceptable, your vehicle probably needs a transmission flush. Problems Shifting Gears Regardless if you drive an automatic or manual, your car requires clean transmission fluid that flows easily throughout your car’s transmission. A transmission that contains too much dirt or sludge will cause sluggish response in the transmission which will result in your vehicle changing gears too quickly or too late while driving. In manual transmission vehicles, you may find it very hard to change gears at all.
TRANSMISSION and torques are adapted. Often, a transmission has multiple gear ratios (or simply “gears”), with the ability to switch between them as speed varies. This switching may be done manually (by the operator), or automatically. Directional (forward and reverse) control may also be provided. Single-ratio transmissions also exist, which simply change the speed and torque (and sometimes direction) of motor output. In motor vehicles, the transmission generally is connected to the engine crankshaft via a flywheel and/or clutch and/ or fluid coupling, partly because internal combustion engines cannot run below a particular speed. The output of the transmission is transmitted via driveshaft to one or more differentials, which in turn, drive the wheels. While a differential may also provide gear reduction, its primary purpose is to permit the wheels at either end of an axle to rotate at different speeds (essential to avoid wheel slippage on turns) as it changes the direction of rotation. Conventional gear/ belt transmissions are not the only mechanism for speed/torque adaptation. Alternative mechanisms include torque converters and power transformation (for example, diesel-electric transmission and hydraulic drive system). Hybrid configurations also exist.
Slipping Gears A dirty transmission may cause a lack of hydraulic power, much the same as not having enough transmission fluid will cause. In order to stay in the appropriate gear, the transmission must develop enough pressure. When a transmission is too dirty, contaminants may interfere with the flow of transmission fluid that helps with this. If you’re transmission has no other problems, and the fluid level of the transmission is full (or close to it), the problem is probably restricted fluid flow due to a buildup of dirt and contaminants that need to be flushed out. Surging of the Vehicle When your vehicle’s transmission is polluted with a lot of dirt and contaminants, and needs a transmission service, you may notice unexplainable
surging of your vehicle. Because your car’s dirty transmission does not allow for adequate transmission fluid flow, your vehicle may tend to jump or surge forward and fall backwards for no good reason. This is caused by inconsistent flow of clean transmission fluid that is needed to ensure smooth operation of the gears and other moving parts inside the transmission assembly. Delay in Vehicle Movement Another sign that your vehicle may have contaminated transmission fluid is
when the vehicle stalls for one or two seconds before moving after having been put in gear. If there are no other problems with the transmission, a transmission flush may help. You should be aware that if the vehicle is displaying these symptoms, your dirty transmission may have already caused bigger problems. Most modern car does not have dipstick to check the fluid level or condition. Always follow your owners manual before adding or service your own vehicle.

Who is my shepherd? Fr. Edmund Vargas WRITER
“The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing shall want.” This is a favorite quotation from Psalm 23 which is an Old Testament allusion to Christ who has become our Shepherd and Savior. In the first-century Palestine, the sheep are gathered for the night in an enclosed area with one opening where the shepherd lies across to protect the sheep from any predators. Even when several flocks are mixed together, the sheep recognize the shepherd’s voice and respond to none other when called. Rather than walking behind the sheep and using dogs and other animals to keep the flock together as done today, the shepherd walks in front of the sheep and leads them. The first-century metaphor depicts Jesus as a protector of his followers by laying down his life for them and gathering them into a unique relationship with himself and guiding them by the leading the way. The Good Shepherd is the leader who lays down his life for his sheep, his flock. He is the caring

companion who protects them, whose voice they recognize and who provides pasture and life for them. The believer is thus offered a relationship of trust and safety because of the action of the shepherd. The imagery also indicates the intimate and close relationship among the members of the flock, the Church. It strongly

suggests that faith is lived in the context of community. Redemption is realized through the common efforts of the community which listens and recognizes the voice of the Shepherd. To paraphrase the gospels, we have to shepherd one another as Christ shepherds us. The world will know we are Christians by how we shepherd one another.
As we celebrate Christ as our Good Shepherd, let us reflect on the words of St Gregory the Great: “Ask yourself whether you belong to Jesus’ flock, whether you know him, whether the light of his truth shines in your mind. I assure you that it is not by faith that you will come to know him, but by love; not by mere conviction, but by action…”

Reunion!
Romy Honorio CONTRIBUTOR
My fascination and time spent with Facebook increased by 3 percent. Personal or group messages, images of food on the table, selfies, medical breakthroughs, sceneries around the world, inspirational quotes, poems, Youtube sensations, travels, comments and many more, at some degree, dented my perspective in life. Each time I logged in, new and interesting items micro-shrunk my cranial terabytes. I guess fb taught me things outside my realm of understanding. I was most fascinated with one posting last month which detailed my high school class reunion. It’s hard to explain but just the thought of reuniting with my old, long lost buddies was somewhat more appealing than any other gathering. The memories of our experiences made me laugh at myself. Crazy Ymor! My mind flew 40 years back. My first dance was still fresh in my mind. My partner’s arms were heavy. I also remembered when
W LAST MONTH’S WINNER MISS GENEA BALLESTER my date and I (plus five chaperons) watched From Russia with Love. I wanted to attend but my pocket vigorously opposed my desire. So I sought the magic of fb. The images began to flood my screen. I missed our craziness, teasing, sharing food during lunch, no pretension and reservation to help, frank and honest talk about our concerns, the joy of being together as one united group and the value of true and selfless friendship. I relished at the images of my beloved classmates for hours. Wrinkles were part of our faces’ terrain. Nostalgic memories of the
past filled my weekend. Driving to work the following Monday it occurred to me reunions in Calgary are common events within our own Pinoy community. Technically, associations’ meeting, anniversaries, parties, musical concerts, participation in the stampede parade, independence celebration, street festivals and fiestas are all forms of reunion. We gather to live, enjoy and celebrate life. Memories are made, friendships are reinforced, new insights learned and great food consumed with gusto. However, unpleasant human experiences can also arise. As people
“mature” it seems there should be more cooperation and unity, but the opposite predominates. People tend to compare and compete, becoming critical and “craby”. Hence, unity and cooperation remain an idea for many of our leaders and followers. That being said, maybe a united and cooperative community emulates a high schoollike bond, ultimately looking forward to wonderful, worth-celebrating “reunions,” bringing us together and demanding our full purposeful and meaningful participation.

MadameKC CONTRIBUTOR
Ano ang pinagkaiba ng Bobo at Tanga sa Pagibig? Ang Bobo walang ginagawa samantalang ang Tanga lahat ginagawa.. Dear Madame KC, I don’t know what to do. My boyfriend and I have been together for more than 2yrs. Bago pa lang kme nuon pinipilit na nya na may mangyari sa amin which he succeeded in doing after our first year anniv. He knows that I wanted to get married first before that. Pero in all his advances ang hirap din magcontrol. I gave in kasi mahal ko rin naman sya, thinking na sya na talaga ang gusto kong makatuluyan. Nuong una masipag sya dumalaw sa akin. But later on, when I felt that our relationship is revolving around “s_x” na lang (dahil nagiging ok lang kme pag meron nun), I told him na baka pwede stop na muna yun. Bukod pa dun, I don’t wanna get pregnant out of wedlock. Apart from that, I really feel guilty and uncomfortable kase hindi naman ako nag punta ng Canada para lang dun. Nag punta ako dito para maka tulong sa mga kapatid ko na nagaaral pa sa Pinas.
I go to his place and he won’t meet me outside. He always threatens me and tell me na wag ko sya sisihin dahil isa daw sa paghihiwalayan namin ay hindi ko mabigay ang gusto nya. Natatakot nako at baka mambabae sya because of that. Ilang beses na nya akong isinubukan hiwalayan but I always end up begging him. In all honesty, I don’t know how to start again without him. Pero lagi nalang ganito sitwasyon namin. I don’t see him planning for our future together anymore. Gusto nya lng daw magsama nalang muna kami then later na ang kasal. Sabi ko okay kahit hindi ganun ang pangarap ko willing akong magcompromise. But I asked, can you tell me how? Kung hindi pa rin naman sya capable umalis from his accommodation to rent his own place. He’s not earning enough and still supporting his parents and siblings back home. I understand that part, kaya naman hindi ako nagdedemand ng hin-
I’m not being a hypocrite. It’s not easy to control once you’ve started. But I wanted to feel that we are going somewhere. I know na mahal nya ako but he’s somewhat immature and always misunderstand everything. Hanggang sa nababaliktad na lahat, to the point na hindi ko na alam kung may mali ba dun sa gusto kong mangyari. Feeling ko tuloy I don’t have the right to say NO dahil naibigay ko na sa kanya tapos saka ipagdadamot? Lahat ng away namin umiikot na lng duon sa pangungulit nya sa akin. Hindi na nya ako dinadalaw at hindi daw kami magkikita hangga’t hindi ako ang dadalaw sa accommodation nila. I feel very uncomfortable doing lalo na puro mga kasama nya sa work and anduon. Alam ko din na hindi nya mapipigilan sarili nya pagsolo lang kme dun. We were ok after that but he expects me to go there all the time. Sabi ko date naman kami sa labas kahit di na sya pumunta sa tinitirhan ko. Pero he insists that
di nya kaya. I am willing to wait hanggang maging priority nya ako. But he doesn’t understand my side. I really don’t know what to do anymore. Is there something wrong with me? Shall I continue with his demands? Or should I let go? “Lady G” (GAGA) Dear Lady G, My question is, are you happy? If not, then why stay? He treats you like (so sorry) para ka lang parausan. The fact that he makes you feel na anytime pwede siya maghanap ng iba, he doesn’t value you and inconsiderate siya sa feelings mo. Nag ii-stay lang siya sa relationship kasi convenient sa kanya, kasi nakukuha nya ang gusto nya. Pag hindi pwede basta ka na lang niya pagsasalitaan at gustong iwanan? Kung talagang mahal ka niya, he will put aside his needs kasi di mo gustong gawin “yun”. At paulit ulit siyang nagattempt na iwan ka means
na wala na talagang halaga ang relationship ninyo for him. Is that what you want? Lahat naman ng break ups masakit eh, especially pag siya yung pinaglaanan mo ng lahat ng firsts mo. Pero di ka naman pumasok sa relationship para masaktan diba? Kung nararamdaman mo na mas marami ng cons kesa sa pros, I think it’s the right time to get out of the relationship.
It’s not your fault, nagmahal ka lang ng maling tao. At wag na wag mong isisi sa sarili mo, siya ang nambalewala sa relasyon ninyo, siya yung di makaappreciate sayo. Madame KC

JOLINA ON IMPERSONATING MANNY PACQUIAO: WIN OR LOSE I’M HAPPY Pop icon Jolina Magdangal will be impersonating no other than boxing champ Manny Pacquiao this weekend (April 18 and 19) in the top-rating “Your Face Sounds Familiar.” And the pressure on her seems to be building up as the whole country anticipates his mega-fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. “That I got assigned to impersonate Manny Pacquiao comes at a perfect time. It was not intended to happen just because he has an upcoming fight. Any of us could have been picked to transform into Manny. Whether I win or lose, I’m happy that I get to impersonate him,” said Jolina. “Those who are unable to come near him should just take a picture with me,” she joked. This is not the first time Jolina will be impersonating a man, as she previously impersonated Guns N’ Roses vocalist Axl Rose. She said she even finds impersonating men more exciting because it makes her look entirely different. “Manny Pacquiao has a distinct sound, moves, and facial expression. He has a signature smile. I’m pressured but more excited. Copying his voice and how he talks will definitely be the most challenging
part. I’m also hoping that I will look exactly like him so I can pull it off,” added Jolina. Meanwhile, Jay-R’s is more inspired to study his music icons especially after the real Alice Cooper posted on Twitter a link to the RnB star’s performance as the rock icon in “Your Face.” Co-performers Maxene Magalona and Edgar Allan Guzman, on the other hand, also have a tough task of impersonating music icons of the opposite gender. They will transform into Vhong Navarro and Toni Gonzaga, respectively. Karla Estrada will again show off her vocal chops as Mariah Carey, while Tutti Caringal will be made over as Aeromsmith vocalist Steven Tyler. Nyoy Volante will try rapping as Apl de Ap, while Jay-R and Melai Cantiveros will impress as their own versions of Tom Jones and Cyndi Lauper. Don’t miss “Your Face Sounds Familiar” Saturdays after “MMK” and Sundays after “Rated K” on ABS-CBN.
