Canada’s Immigration Minister Wants to “Increase Substantially the Number of Immigrants” Cheryl Posadas-Guinsatao EDITOR IN-CHIEF

Best choices of loans with 3% interest rate*

“Whatever it takes, I will get the job done!”

John McCallum, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, has stated his goal of significantly increasing immigration to Canada beyond its current record level as a way to fill the country’s labour needs and rise to the demographic challenges faced by an aging population. McCallum made the comments in Manila, Philippines during a speech to the Canadian Chamber of Commerce during its last leg of Asian tour. “So why not substantially increase

, 2001, 2002 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012

the number of immigrants coming to Canada? And that is, I think, I hope, what we are about to do . . . the direction in which I would like to go is to increase substantially the number of immigrants,” McCallum said. Earlier this year, the Liberal government of Canada unveiled its immigration plan in 2016 which projected that Canada would welcome around 300,000 new permanent residents this year. This marked the highest projected immigration level in decades, and around a seven percent increase on the 2015 plan. Key to the government’s larger plan to promote innovation and grow the economy is McCallum’s three-year immigration plan, which he plans to unveil this fall. Following his comments in Manila, it is likely that this plan will showcase the government’s objective to increase overall immigration numbers. However, McCallum said that no final decision

on immigration has been made and that there will be some work to do in getting convincing his cabinet colleagues, as well as the Canadian population, about the merits of his new plan. During a visit to Beijing earlier in his Asian tour, McCallum announced that the government of Canada plans to increase the number of visa offices inChina in order to facilitate the numbers of Chinese visitors, workers, students and prospective immigrants expected to come to Canada in the future. McCallum’s department is expected to make a number of other changes before the end of 2016, including modifications to the Canadian citizenship and changes to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The government’s bid to attract more Chinese workers and students comes as the Canadian economy sheds jobs and critics worry about the influence of foreign investors on fast-rising house prices in cities such as Vancouver and Toronto. Canada’s unemployment rate increased to 6.9 per cent in July. Mr. McCallum, though, said Canada has a “legitimate need for temporary foreign workers” in some regions and industries. He cited fish processing, meat packing and high-tech as examples. He also said the Liberals want to find a middle ground on foreign workers. “We went from

a situation five years or so ago where everybody was allowed in and then there were various scandals, and went to the other extreme of almost nobody allowed in. And now we want to be in an intermediate position, and it’s not fully resolved,” Mr. McCallum said. “There’s a parliamentary committee that hasn’t reported yet. But the general idea would be that in some regions and in some industries, we have a legitimate need for temporary foreign workers. But – and this is a big but – we would generally want to see these people on a pathway to permanent residence if that is their desire.” He said he wants to make it easier for companies to bring in foreign workers. “We’re also going to reduce some of the barriers and the silly rules … in order to give companies freedom to bring in the best and the brightest. We’ll get rid of many of these [required] labour-market impact assessments which slow things down enormously.” Ottawa, meanwhile, is also studying ways to remake an investor immigrant program that was cancelled under the Conservatives after it amassed a backlog of roughly 65,000 applicants, mostly from China. A replacement program failed to attract much interest, and “we’re working on” another attempt, Mr. McCallum said, pointing to a U.S. program designed to propel investment into senior care facilities. That could serve as a model, he said.

More of the same? EDITORIAL BOARD

In a few weeks’ time Canadians will look back and take a quick assessment whether their summer was good or bad. For the out-of-country-holiday spenders, there are many memories to be cherished and when the bills come in the mail, the more vivid those memories become. “Staycation”, for many, mirrors a sense of frugality. Visits to museums, plays and events enrich ones appreciation of locals’ talents and skills. Various ethnic festivities showcase diversity of culture, tradition and love of food. Concerts and stage

performances grab the attention of camp-weary Canadians. Filipino-Calgarians are not exempted from this phenomenon. Like a bamboo being swayed by the wind of recession, many would still set aside money just to get entertained. Some pragmatists resort to social media like Facebook and Youtube for their past time. In the light of the above however, one thing is very common. It’s more of the same stuff. Dancing with the same tempo and steps; singing songs with the same genre; eating the same menu but priced higher; meeting people with the same smile and greetings; busi-

nesses giving away stuff to lure new clients and the same venue with diminished appeal and excitement; wearing the same outfit with slightly faded hue; and more of the same. It is more of the same, except change itself. Neither to be happy nor sad, change carries us over into something different, valuable and lasting. As one ages his/ her perception of things adds depth and meaning. Expectedly, as our community matures gone are the days of shallow and mediocre form of performances and presentations (dances, songs, delicacies and entertainment). Nobody deserves more of the same!

Twister damages 20 houses in Bulacan town; 25 villages still flooded MALOLOS CITY, Bulacan,

Aug. 17 (PNA) -- Fear and shock gripped residents of Barangay Sibul in San Miguel town when a powerful twister slammed their village at the height of a heavy downpour Tuesday night. No casualty was reported but some 20 houses were damaged or partially damaged by strong whirling winds, reports reaching the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PPDRMO) said. “What had happened was unexpectedly. Suddenly, we heard a roaring sound and the strong winds eventually destroyed the roofs of some houses here. Our neighbors were forced to stay in other concrete houses,” the villagers said as they described that the twister was so powerful that it has damaged many houses in less than 10 minutes. This developed as 25 villages remain flooded in Calumpit, Marilao and Malolos due to heavy rains spawned by the southwest moonson that pelted the province since Friday last week. PDRRM officer Liz Mungcal said as of 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, at least 13 villages in Calumpit were submerged under one to three feet of flood water, five in Malolos City (1 to 2 feet) and three in Marilao (1 to 3 feet). Three persons also died due to drowning. They were identified as

Rufino Lozada, 70, resident of Purok 3, Barangay Upig, San Ildefonso; Joseph Sepeda, 19, resident of Villarica Subdivision, Barangay Poblacion, Sta. Maria and Juharie Ampaso, 13, resident of Barangay Muzon, San Jose del Monte City. The PDRRMO also reported that damage to rice crops and fisheries has already reached PHP34,589,311.35. Governor Wilhelmino M.Sy-Alvarado has already instructed concerned department heads to assess damage in infrastructure. He also dispatched relief teams to help affected families. Classes in all levels were also suspended in Malolos City, Paombong, Hagonoy, Pulilan, Calumpit, Guiguinto, Marilao, Meycauayan City, Plaridel, Bocaue, Bustos and Bulakan. As of 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, the water elevation at Angat Dam was 187.56 meters, which is still way below its spilling level of 210 meters. The water level at Ipo Dam was 101.08 meters (spilling level 101 meters) while the water elevation at Bustos Dam was 17.36 meters (spilling level 17.70 meters). Meanwhile, residents in this historic city are complaining from sickness caused by the floods. Market vendors at the still flooded public market showed their blistering feet afflicted with athlete’s foot.

Answering the cry of the poor (ANCOP)

July 23, 2016. Calgary (RH/ DF). About 150 attended the 2016 ANCOP Walk Launch and Appreciation held at the Glenmore Inn. Spearheaded by Couples’ for Christ (CFC) Calgary, the event rekindled the crowd’s spirit of being the “hands and feet” of Jesus in Canada, and ultimately to the recipients in the Philippines. ANCOP Canada President, Mr. Ricky Cuenca, movingly shared the fruits of the movement’s labour of love. The major aspects of answering the cry of the poor were presented with joy, clarity and passion. The Child Sponsorship Program aims to transform the lives of poor children & their families, helping restore hope and dignity. It entails value formation and the provision of scholarships to deserving children. The crowd was inspired by the sheer number of graduates (many with flying

colors – magna cum laude, cum laude) the program produced. Community Development, another major area of service, was more than commendable. Thousands of families were uplifted from the quagmire of despair. Their new abodes and small scale livelihood projects brought back their dignity and trust to people and ultimately on God’s faithfulness. The last leg of ANCOP service, Humanitarian Relief, showcased how collaborations between and among like-minded organizations can build “infrastructural miracle” in the midst of uncertainty. On April 16, 2016, keys to 400 housing units were handed to recipients of Pope Francis Village-CFC ANCOP Canada Community in Tacloban, Eastern Visayas. Mr. and Mrs. German and Amor Roldan, (CFC North 1 Chapter leader) and Alodia Landingin highlighted the occasion by their inspiring testimonies. The couple and their

Alodia Landingin

children heeded God’s calling. God’s blessings are being channeled to seven children in the Philippines through the Roldan Family. In the same token, Alodia, young as she is, answered God’s prompting in helping children grow up with spiritual, emotional and physical provision, ultimately lessening the burden on poverty-stricken families. The testimonies of the Roldans’ and Alodia left an insightful question to the minds of the audience. If they are able to contribute to this cause what’s holding one to do the same by the grace of God? The shared experiences were and continue to be a very practical and pragmatic way to express one’s desire to support ANCOP. Spread the word to family, friends, and colleagues to join the ANCOP Walk 2016 on August 20. For more info or to register: visit walk.ancopcanada.org and www. ancopcanada.orh/home

Rio 2016: Hidilyn Diaz gives the Philippines their first Olympic medal in two decades

who heard the sharing of Filipino youth leaders Aames Abanto and Angela Cruz-Abanto regarding the recently concluded World Youth Day in Kraków, Poland were inspired and encouraged to participate in the next World Youth Day 2019 happening in Panama City.

Hidilyn Diaz sprung a major surprise in the Philippines by winning a weightlifting silver medal in Rio — the country’s first Olympic medal for 20 years, officials said Monday. Sports analysts in the Philippines had not expected the 1.54-metre (5ft 1/2in) tall Diaz to bag a medal at the 2016 Games after coming up empty in 2008 and 2012 games. We had high hopes with other sports. So (Cruz’s medal) is a surprise. A lot of people didn’t expect she would take a medal,” said Ronel

Abrenica, executive-director of the Philippine Sports Commission. But Abrenica said he noticed something from the 25-year-old, who became the first woman from the Philippines ever to win an Olympic medal. “I was watching her before. I saw her sincerity and determination. You could see it in the way she talks. She was determined to win. She had the fire in the belly,” he told AFP. “Before she set off (for Rio), she told me, ‘at least, I can get a bronze’. So this (silver) is a bonus,” said Abrenica.

Diaz took the silver in the 53kg class, the first ever by a Filipino weightlifter, Abrenica said. It was also the first Olympic medal for the Southeast Asian nation since boxer Mansueto Velasco took a silver in the 1996 games. The two Filipino boxers in the 13-member contingent were considered to have the best chances, as boxers had won five of the country’s previous nine Olympic medals, sports analysts had said. Hail Storm Tips DF

Nora Sy Larioza CONTRIBUTOR

Some areas were hit with hail storm more than the other this summer. Regardless, it’s time for you to go around your property and check for possible hail damage and start the claim. Even if you think there were NO damages, its worth to call an Insurance Adjuster for a FREE evaluation. Also, for those of you who just bought a property and just waiting for possession, pls let your Realtor make an addendum ensuring that the property you bought will be in the same condition as when you signed the contract ( Clause 4.2 of the Purchase Contract ). Here are some insights on how to deal with the claim : Filing a hail damage claim for your home will not cause the insurance company to single you out and raise your premiums Insurance companies pay out every year for all sorts of “Acts of God” and weather related issues. They don’t single people

out and raise their rates because of weather related claims. If an area is considered a catastrophe area there will be many, many people just like you calling their insurance companies asking to file a claim. There may be a general increase in rates overall in your area if hail becomes a regular visitor. Request an adjuster do an inspection - This does not cost you a dime When you call into the claims department of your insurance company and tell them you’d like to file a hail claim they are required to have a company adjuster contact you within just a couple of days to schedule a time to inspect. Request that an adjuster come out to the property to inspect and give you a scope of estimated costs. This is their responsibility. I’ve heard of companies that tell their customers that they have high deductibles and probably have less damage than what their deductible would cover. That makes no sense! How do they know if they don’t come out and inspect. Also, most Contractors covers your deductibles.

Wait to get estimates from contractors until after the insurance company gives you their scope of damage report. Some insurance companies will try to get you to obtain three estimates from contractors and then send them copies before they send you their scope of damage report. Don’t do it, it’s not in your best interest! Insurance companies use standard industry pricing through and it is all based upon your zip code. They are required to put together a scope of estimated costs to bring your property back to prestorm condition. Let them know that you know, it is your right to have that estimate from them.(Karen Pohlman) Hail storm can cause significant damage to your home and your vehicle, breaking windows and denting metal. They are hard to notice . But if you do, take photos, it will validate your claim and move your claim process quicker. Record all details, take note of the date, time and location. File immediately .

Alberta now has the lowest payday lending rate in Canada. As of August 1, the province has the lowest maximum borrowing rate in the country, reduced from $23 for every $100 borrowed to $15 per $100. All fees related to a payday loan must be included in this cost, and this move puts an end to hidden fees and charges. These changes are part of the first phase of An Act to End Predatory Lending legislation that came into effect on August 1. More changes will take effect later this year. More than 30 payday loan companies currently operate more than 220 branches in Alberta. Stephanie McLean, Minister, Service Alberta said that, “Last fall, Albertans told us they want lower interest rates and stronger consumer protections. Today, it’s the law. We have put an end to 600 per cent predatory interest rates and vicious cycles of debt, with fair rules that protect Albertans.” Payday lenders will

no longer be able to charge a fee to cash a payday loan cheque, solicit directly by email or phone, or offer a loan when another is outstanding. The Act also requires government to encourage financial institutions and community groups to offer alternative, short-term loans that are fair and accessible. First Calgary Financial and Chinook Financial are the first to launch an alternative micro-loan program in Alberta. It has an annual interest rate of 19 per cent with a payback period of six to 18 months. The cost over two weeks for a borrower at 19 per cent annual interest is 73 cents per $100 borrowed. First Calgary Financial will launch its Cash Crunch loan on August 22. It’s credit with reasonable rates, longer payback terms and financial literacy supports that set Albertans up for financial health. According to Shelley Vandenberg, President,

First Calgary Financial, “Our two divisions, First Calgary Financial and Chinook Financial, are proud to introduce fair and responsible small-loan alternatives. Cash Crunch Loan will be the first of its kind in the province and will prevent people from reaching financial instability.” Jeff Loomis, Executive Director, Momentum applauded this, “The reduced cost of borrowing will save people living on a low income hundreds of dollars in debt payments. The Cash Crunch loan is also a great opportunity for people to reduce their debt and build a positive relationship with their lender. We are grateful to the Government of Alberta and First Calgary Financial for their important work on this issue.” A payday loan is a loan of $1,500 or less that has a term of 62 days or less. Payday loans became regulated in Alberta on September 1, 2009. (Canadian Press)

Senator Enverga: National crime rate increases for first Cooperation is time in 12 years: necessary to StatsCan combat climate change

Senator Enverga and MP Dzerowicz with delegates from Mexico, Aug. 4, 2016 Ottawa, Aug. 10, 2016 – On August 3-5, I represented Canada at the ParlAmericas’ Action to Stop Climate Change conference in Panama City, Panama, where parliamentarians from all 35 countries representing the Americas gathered to discuss ways to fight climate change. I am extremely hopeful that the knowledge gained from this joint initiative will help our country develop measures that will lead to significant environmental improvements. As a member of the Standing Senate Committee on Aboriginal Peoples, I have seen first-hand the impact of climate change on the lives of the indigenous peoples of the Canadian North. Communities in the North that are greatly dependent on the environment for their livelihood are at immediate risk because of the threat posed to their traditional way of life, but the impacts of climate change extend far beyond. Last year, the Standing Senate Committee on Agriculture and Forestry, of which I am also a member, released a study on the importance of bee

health to sustainable food production in Canada. In recent years, annual bee colony losses in Canada were more than twice the normal rate, and climate change is listed as one of the main factors that cause increased mortality rate. As pollinators, bees are vital to the environment, where they help to ensure the survival of other animal and plant species. Bees are also important for food and seed and honey production industries, which contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to the Canadian economy annually. It is fairly easy to understand, then, why climate change is a concern that we must all share, and why it is extremely important that we work together to mitigate the negative impacts of this phenomenon. Recognizing this, parliamentarians at the Panama conference established the Climate Change Network, which will serve as a forum for legislative work and the exchange of best practices to diminish the environmental, social

and economic effects of climate change. As part of our commitment to the agenda put forward at the gathering, I encourage Canadians to get involved in the development of legislation that will help our country adapt to climate change and alleviate its effects. Canada is in a unique position to take a leadership role in finding new and innovative ways to address this issue, which will only be possible with the cooperation of every sector of society. The challenge lies in finding and implementing a plan that will be both environmentally responsible and economically viable, and I hope that any future legislation will achieve a balance of the two. OTTAWA—The national crime rate rose three per cent in 2015—the first increase in 12 years. There were almost 1.9 million Criminal Code incidents—excluding traffic offences—reported by police last year, about 70,000 more than in 2014, Statistics Canada said. Irvin Waller, a criminology professor at the University of Ottawa, cautioned not to read a lot into the figures. “I think an uptick, on its own, doesn’t mean too much,” he said Wednesday. While the per-capita crime rate grew in 2015, it has generally been on a downward trend since the early 1990s, with the only other increase reported in 2003, Statistics Canada said. In addition, there were wide provincial differences, with the rate rising 12 per cent in Alberta, staying the same in Ontario and dropping 12 per cent in Prince Edward Island. National rates of police-reported crime increased for most Criminal Code violations, including homicide, attempted murder, firearms offences, robbery and sexual assault. Rates for all types of

property crimes also increased from the previous year, including fraud, possession of stolen property, identify fraud, theft, and breaking and entering. The national crime severity index, which measures the volume of reports and how serious they are, rose five per cent in 2015, but the agency said that was still 31 per cent lower than a decade ago. In Alberta, the higher severity index was primarily the result of more incidents of breaking and entering, theft of $5,000 or under and motor vehicle theft, the agency said. More incidents of breaking and entering in 2015 also contributed to the severity index increase in New Brunswick, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. The rise in property crime in Alberta might be attributed to the sudden downturn in the economy, which tends to prompt such a spike, Waller said. He expressed concern about the 604 reported homicides in 2015, a rate increase of 15 per cent from the previous year.

capita rate, it’s of course much, much lower than the United States, but it’s higher than many European countries and countries like Japan.” He said while it is too early to tell, the rise in the rate of murder cases could stem from an increase in gang-related shootings in cities including Toronto. Some cities, such as Glasgow in Scotland and Minneapolis and Oakland in the United States, have analyzed homicides in search of solutions, Waller said. Typically the answer lies in providing more outreach services for youth, as well as programs to get young people out of gangs and help parents deal with troubled children, added Waller, who is working with a network of Canadian cities to help bring their crime rates down.

“These statistics are a reminder that we should be doing more to pull these rates even further down,” Waller said. “On a per

PH to issue new ‘highsecurity’ passports at ‘faster’ pace MANILA, Philippines – Starting Monday, August 15, the Philippines is set to issue new passportswith added security features, which will be delivered in a shorter period of time from the production facility to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Secretary Martin Andanar said in a statement that Filipinos who wish to apply for a passport will receive the “all new high-security passport” starting August 15. He said added security features have been placed, such as the upgraded security feature of the microchip to capture the personal data of the applicant, invisible ultra-

violet (UV) fluorescent ink and thread, and elaborate design when subject to UV light. Other changes include intaglio printing used for the printing of money as well as the printing of the coat of arms using optical variable illusion ink where color varies at different angles. Andanar added that the new passport design promotes the country’s regions. Faster production speed Aside from the upgraded features, the production of the new passports will also be faster. “The new APO printing system increases the production speed of the

new passports [by] 35%,” Andanar said. Andanar, whose office supervises APO Production Unit Incorporated, said: “This means the new passport printing system results to delivery of passports from press to the [DFA] to an average of 5 days compared to 7-14 days previously.” By next year, Andanar said his office plans to cut the delivery period further. “It is the objective of the PCO to keep on improving our printing processes so we can even hasten the delivery from our APO Lima Plant in Batangas to DFA within 4 days by 2017,” the PCO chief said. – Philippine News Agency

Boxing is a hand-to-hand sport practiced since ancient times. Back in the days, boxing was used only by professional athletes and this practice was kept until the end of the

20th century. This is the time when people realized that boxing can be used as an exercise because of the many benefits it brings. For instance, boxing is great for losing weight. The rapid movement and the use of both legs and arms during the training process can burn more than 500 calo-

ries in every class. Boxing is also great for improving muscle tone, building strong ligaments, joints, and bones, improving the work of the cardiovascular system, muscular endurance, core stability and it can also serve as a great natural stress-reliever.

Brains of overweight people “10 years older” than those of slim peers LONDON, Aug. 6 (PNA/ Xinhua) -- Being obese or overweight in middle age will make people’s brains “10 years older” than those of their leaner counterparts, a new research has revealed. The findings, published on Thursday in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, found changes in the brain structure of overweight people which are normally seen in those far older. After scanning brains of 473 people aged between 20 and 87 and dividing them into lean and overweight categories, scientists discovered that extra weight would accel-

erate the loss of the brain’s white matter. The volume of white matter, a tissue of the brain that transmits information between different parts, naturally decreases as people get older. Scientists then calculated how much that white matter volume related to age across the two groups. They found that an overweight 50-year-old had a comparable white matter volume to a slim 60-yearold person. “The overall message is that brains basically appear to be 10 years older if you are overweight or obese,” said Lisa Ronan, lead author of the study from

Cambridge University. Meanwhile, according to the study, the difference of white matter volume was only found from middle age onwards, suggesting that human brains might be particularly vulnerable during this period of aging. “Clearly, this must be a starting point for us to explore in more depth the effects of weight, diet and exercise on the brain and memory,” said co-author Sadaf Farooqi, professor from the Wellcome Trust-Medical Research Council Institute of Metabolic Science at Cambridge. MAC Martial Arts Academy

A Disciplined Fitness School for the Young & the Not-so-Young Tata “Tatsky” Gascon WRITER

Most times in my Sports column, I feature a personality. But when I chanced upon meeting a throng of young kids at a practice called by the group who prepared the Filipino Community in its annual representation at the Stampede Parade Prelude, I can’t help but get mesmerized by the sweet laughter of these children whom were all wearing their red and black robe outfit. Ones that we see normally worn by martial arts enthusiasts. I am not mistaken. They are indeed members of a martial arts school called MAC Martial Arts Club and they dominated the get together that one sunny afternoon with their resonating Yaahs & Heeyaahs! and they looked so happy with their sun-kissed faces. They were not even bothered by the seemingly warm uniform they were wearing. I began to ponder

that theirs is a good subject. Led by its owner and trainer, Mr. Lawrence Macaraeg is not a regular personality to deal with. In fact, he is a name to surely remember. I listened to him at the recently concluded Fit#1 Sports Gala organized by TFCC (The Filipino Champions of Canada), a group of Filipino-Canadians whose vision is to connect, share, and inspire the Fil-Can community with great life stories in real time. Listening to Lawrence made me

appreciate more his zest for life and his interest to continue empowering these kids with enthusiasm for fitness & disciplined well-being. Lawrence began his training for martial arts at age 12 and started sharing his knowledge by teaching at 19. While watching Bruce Lee movies at an early age, the man simply became more passionate to have training in the art of Kaikendo – a Japanese martial art of sword fencing with one of his

mentors, Raymond Julian. Similar respect goes to Ernie Avelino, and Relion Gracie, who also made an impact in getting his feet grounded. Now with his school based in Calgary, Mac Martial Arts Club would like to cater to the young and the not-so-young, to make Lawrence’s vision become more apparent. He likes the fact that running such organization, he only not keep himself fit and healthy, but also encourages those students he

manages, to replicate him. His goal is to be a role model for them so they may grow up to be successful and tough enough to battle what life has to offer. The disciplinary motivations that martial arts encompasses are realities in life that one must truly adapt in order to gain physical and emotional stability. He hopes to be successful because his success will mean success for these individuals as well. Among the group that Mac Martial Arts have

helped are Elementary school children, teachers, & members of the RCMP. These people benefited from his instruction. In his days, Lawrence works in the oil and gas industry. A few can rival Mr. Macaraeg’s longevity and experience. And his numerous awards in this field are his core proofs that the school is not the only one that deserve to be applauded, but his entire following of children, young men and women, and adults alike.

How to use you AC more efficiently Manny Perez WRITER

Start with the basics The first step to lessen the AC’s work is to park in a shaded spot. We know you won’t find one every time, especially in huge parking lots, but keep in mind to always try and park your car in shade. It also helps you to know where the shade will fall at a certain hour near a building or tree when you go to work. If the only parking spot left is in full sunlight in the first part of the day, there are high chances it will be shaded in the afternoon. Spot them and park your car there. Even if your car will heat up during the day, shade will lower its temperature in the afternoon so it won’t be a furnace on wheels.

W

If you park in a wide open area, you can use windshield shades to cover your car’s windows. This will reduce the greenhouse effect inside.

you have an automatic air conditioning system, it will automatically start in Low mode and will gradually increase its speed.

The classic way

So try to mimmic that using the Temperature and Blower controls.

If all of the above have failed , it’s a lot better if you will try and ventilate the cabin first before turning on the AC.

Always use recirculation mode

So basically you have to open all the windows and drive a bit. An effective maneuver is to drive at around 10-15 km/h and take 90 degree turns, as the inertia will push out the hot air through one side of the car and suck ‘fresh’ one from outside.

How do you want your interior? “Cool!” Well, don’t just let the hot outside air to come in.

Start the AC in Low You are not too happy when someone abruptly wake you up in the middle of the night, right? Neither the AC wants to give 100% when you turn it on. In case

Once the AC is blowing cool air in your face turn ON the Recirculation Mode. This means that the AC system won’t suck air from the outside and it will use the one in the cabin. Since the cabin air is starting to get cooler, the system will work less to further cool that one down instead of continuously cool the one sucked from outside.

Avoid the

shock When you reached your destination, don’t just turn OFF the engine, because you’ll create a bit of a shock in the AC unit. First, turn OFF the AC while the engine is running. You can start doing this even before reaching your destination. The car interior should be pretty cool now so you won’t break a sweat. After turning OFF the AC, keep the fan working at me-

dium to high speed. Why? Do you know that puddle of water forming underneath you car after using the AC? Well, that’s coming from the evaporator. The unit is almost ice cold when hot air passes near it so condensation occurs on its fins, forming water droplets. The fan working while the AC is stopped will dry out the evaporator and its surroundings. This means moss and other damp-darkplaces-loving bacteria won’t thrive there and you’ll be spared from foul smells.

WIKIPEDIA

Automobile A/C A company in New York City in the United States, first offered installation of air conditioning for cars in 1933. Most of their customers operated limousines and luxury cars. In 1939, Packard became the first automobile manufacturer to offer an air conditioning unit in its cars.[2] These were manufactured by Bishop and Babcock Co, of Cleveland Ohio. The “Bishop and Babcock Weather Conditioner” also incorporated a heater. Cars ordered with the new “Weather Conditioner” were shipped from Packard’s East Grand Boulevard facility to the B&B factory where the conversion was performed. Once complete, the car was shipped to a local dealer where the customer would take delivery. Packard fully warranted and supported this conversion, and marketed it well. However, it was not commercially successful for a number of reasons:

The main evaporator and blower system took up half of the trunk space (though this became less of a problem as trunks became larger in the post-war period). It was superseded by more efficient systems in the post-war years. It had no temperature thermostat or shut-off mechanism other than switching the blower off. (Cold air would still enter the car with any movement as the drive belt was continuously connected to the compressor—later systems would use electrically operated clutches to remedy this problem.) The several feet of plumbing going back and forth between the engine compartment and trunk proved unreliable in service. The price, at US $274 ($4,692.12 in 2014 US dollars), was unaffordable to most people in post-depression/pre-war America. The option was discontinued after 1941.

Spiritual

COLUMNIST

Indeed, we don’t live by bread alone but by every word that comes from mouth of God. Our deeper hungers are rooted in our inability to relate with God who is the fullness of our life. Material wealth is not answer to all of our human yearnings. We have to realize more fully that the one who dies with most toys is not the winner of the game of life. We have to be more cognizant of the symptoms of our spiritual hunger that has to be filled by our involvement and participation in the common quest for happiness in this world. We have to utilize our wealth of material resources in our effort to fill the deeper hungers that would give ultimate meaning to our lives. In the Old Testament, God’s people were given manna for their bread in the wilderness as an assurance God’s love and providence. Christ admonishes his followers not to work for the food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life

which he himself gives. When people are fed with word of God, they learn to share their bread and the other gifts with others who need them. The love and generosity that God inspires in our hearts is what we need to make us share the abundance of our world with others. The hunger for bread is invariably related to the hunger for God. The soul that yearns for God is substantially united with the body that needs the nourishment for material strength. In the language of social activists, one cannot pray to God or stare at the stars with an empty stomach. The theological reason for the Church to advocate and work for the elimination of hunger and poverty in our world is that people can hardly pray when they are hungry or angry. Action on behalf of justice and peace is constitutive of Christ’s mandate to preach the good news to the poor and freedom to those who are oppressed by their own selfishness and greed. This is the reason why we take on the church-mandated poverty-alleviation programs like the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The argument that

the Church should stick to spiritual matters does not jibe with Church’s mandate to advocate for justice and peace in the world. The social encyclicals clearly define the role of the Church communities in engaging in activities that would bring about social changes that are beneficial to the poor and the oppressed. God has given every human being in this world the right to eat. There is no reason why people should not have anything to eat when there is so much resource and technology to provide enough food for everyone. And we as a Christian community should promote and work for the elimination of hunger and poverty in a land that is so rich material resources as well as for the elimination of the deeper hunger for God’s justice and peace. The Eucharist we share speaks of the spirit of sharing and sacrifice. Christ shared and sacrificed his own life to show us the example of gaining life in the end. Christ as the bread of life shows us that too should offer our life to be broken for others so we can keep it for eternal life.

Deal with food waste Originally published / posted Aug. 4th, 2016 Western Producer (WP) Romy Honorio WRITER

Long lines are a typical sight at several popular mega store checkout counters in Calgary. Food carts in front, behind and beside me. I hand my membership card to the teller and with a smile she asks if I’d like to upgrade my membership from Gold Star to Executive. I politely decline. It takes the teller less than a minute to settle my two-item (avocado and roasted chicken) purchase. On my way to the parking lot, a family was frantically picking up food items from the pavement that had fallen from their packed cart. I estimated no less than $47 value of food wasted. WP’s July 14th editorial “Reducing global food waste can enhance farmer profits,” delved with clarity on how the on-farm production and process side of the equation en-

hance profit. It was quoted that $31 billion (Value Chain Management International study estimate) worth of wasted food is attributed to various points in Canada’s Food Value Chain. There was no mention that, according to the study, 10 percent and 20 percent of waste is attributed to on-farm and processing, respectively. And for the highest source of waste (47 percent), we consumers are to thank. An increase in profit as a result of improved efficiency in the area of production and processing is expected. However, if we take a closer look at where one can avoid waste, household kitchens are the places to start. This place is minuscule compared to the land area used in producing/processing food. Waste is inevitable from all kinds of food production and processing, but what comes out of one’s pocket for food purchases and what ends up on the table are things

everyone has control over. If one can manage his consumption, quantifying saving is not an issue. What comes to mind then is a sustainable educational campaign to focus on the consumption of food. Food consumption is mostly attributed to consumers’ attitude and appetite. The amount of money wasted from consumption side of food chain (economic); the direct relationship between appetite and health issues (physical), and responsive roles of stakeholders in the food chain continuum (properly regulated by government programs and policies) are the factors that can greatly influence one’s attitude. Increased technological efficiency as espoused in the WP editorial plus attitude/appetite modification is more viable in the long run in terms of minimizing food waste and increasing profit in the farms in particular and the Canadian populace in general.

“True beauty lies deep within. No matter what you look like on the outside, if you know you are beautiful, nothing can change that”

Dear Madame KC, I am a single mom with a 15yr old daughter. I’m 36yrs old, 5’2 and 250lbs. Feeling down right now and need someone to comfort me. I need to feel how to be loved. To me happy ending just happen in movies, pocketbooks and romance series. Paano ba mahalin ang sarili? Lonely lang ako siguro kasi pare-pareho ang mga ginagawa ko araw-

araw. Para may magtext sa akin dapat ako muna ang magtext. Nagplaplano akong pumunta sa US para makita ulit si EX (he is married but separated) and ask him to make plans pero wala akong excitement from him na nakikita. I think, I should just stop it.

I feel so alone. Kahit anong gawin kong busy sa sarili ay bigla na lang ako nalulungkot. Siguro nga destiny ko na maging mag-isa. Wala naman kasing magkakagusto sa hitsura ko. Picky ang mga guys. Karamihan sa kanila gusto yung madidisplay nila at the same time trophy wife

material. Gusto ko man pumayat pero hirap na ako... God Bless, AnMari Dearest Anmari, Ang pagmamahal ay nagmumula sa ating sarili. Paano ka nila mamahalin kung ang sarili mo ay hindi mo kayang mahalin. Be proud of who you are. Sigurado akong may katangian ka na wala ang

iba. Walang pinanganak na perfect. Just be yourself and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Kase Hindi ka magiging masaya.

ka mag enroll ng cooking/baking class? O kaya yoga/fitness class?

And remember, God loves you.

Kung bored ka, ba’t di
