Welcome Refugees A 5-Phase Canadian Government Plan on 2015 and 2016 SOURCE: CIC.GC.CA
On November 24, 2015 The Government of Canada announced its five-phase plan to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees in Canada to be accomplished by the end of February 2016 . The Canadian Government’s goal is to provide protection for Syrian refugees while ensuring the protection and health and safety of Canadians. The Government of Canada has exerted a significant effort, in planning and executing as such to its citizens from private individual sponsors, non-governmental organizations, territorial provincial, down to the municipal governments. During a meeting with the refugees on November 29 visit to Jordan, the Ministers the reiterated the integral role of provinces and territories in warmly welcoming the refugees in their communities. They discussed issues related to where in Canada Syrian refugees will go and the

types of support that communities should have in place to be prepared to accept them. Then first list of communities welcoming privately-sponsored Syrian refugees is released on the same day. According to Hon. Ralph Goodale, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness of Canada, “We have worked diligently to ensure we are prepared to efficiently welcome and process Syrian refugees upon landing. When our new arrivals leave the airport, they will do so as permanent residents - a significant step in their Canadian journey.” On December 10,The first flight of privately-sponsored 163 Syrian refugees landed in Toronto Pearson International Airport. The next 161 Syrian refugees landed in Montreal on another Government of Canada flight t two days later.
Even CN Railways accompanied by the Honourable John McCallum, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, announced a $5 million donation to assist communities with the resettlement of Syrian refugees across Canada on December 11. Minister McCallum said, “This is not a government project; this is a national project. Across the country, Canadians have been saying we need to do more to help Syrian refugees. Today I’d like to commend CN for its generosity in leading the way among Canada’s business community. I look forward to seeing others rise to the occasion.” These government assisted refugees (GARs) and will initially go to 36 communities. Upon arrival in these communities, refugees will receive immediate and specialized service supports. Then they will be settled into permanent accommodation either in those cities, or in surrounding communities where they will have access to settlement service providers.

A special holy Year of Mercy was called by Pope Francis for the Catholic church from Dec. 8 through Nov. 20, 2016 to focus on the boundless nature of God’s mercy. A Jubilee year is a special year celebrated by the church to receive blessing and pardon from God and remission of sins. While most Jubilees have been focused on calling pilgrims to Rome to receive such pardon -- normally by walking through a special holy door at a papal basilica – Pope Francis has widely expanded his Jubilee, asking that dioceses throughout the world open their own holy door at a cathedral or other church to expand the practice globally. Pope Francis has called on Catholics around the world to use the ongoing Jubilee year of mercy to “open wide” the doors of their hearts to forgive others and to work against social exclusion, even of those that may have caused them bother or upset. He even connect it to wat’s happening globally. With global eco-

It was reported that the suicide rate in Alberta alone has increased dramatically in the wake of mounting job losses across the province. The most recent data only goes to June, but according to the chief medical examiner’s office, 30 per cent more Albertans took their lives in the first half of this year compared to the same period last year. In this year of mass layoffs in the energy sector, calls to the Calgary Distress Centre have changed tone and have become more frequent as well. This says something really about the horrible human impact of what’s happening in the economy with the recession and the real felt effect, the real suffering and the real struggle that people are experiencing. — and the problems people are struggling with are more complex. “There might be substance abuse issues. There might be imminent financial collapse,” the report said. “Anxiety, depression. Relationship conflict, maybe concurrent domestic violence. So there are many more things that people are trying to juggle at the same time.” With the declaration of this holy Year of Mercy, it remind us that the door that signify the start of the Jubilee Year indicates Jesus himself who said: ‘I am the gate. Whoever enters through me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture,’” said the Pope Francis. “Going through the holy door is the sign of our trust in the Lord Jesus who did not come to judge, but to save.” Francis also said that mercy and forgiveness “must not remain beautiful words, but must be realized in daily life.”
“Loving and forgiving are the concrete and visible signs that the faith has transformed our hearts and allows us to express in ourselves the same life of God,” said the pontiff. “Loving and forgiving as God loves and forgives,” he continued. “This is a program of life that cannot know interruptions or exceptions, but pushes us to always go beyond without ever tiring, with the certainty of being sustained by the paternal presence of God.” Really, people at this tough times are just at wit’s end and they’re contemplating escape from it. However, Pope Francis is not the only one optimistic the trend can be curbed. Alberta’s population as reported by Statistics Canada generously donated to charities. Specifically, in Alberta, the contribution made by primary donors increased almost by $1 billion between 2004 and 2013, compared with an increase of $200 million for other donors.
When I asked one of a private donor, why donate at this lean times. They said, “We want to be able to interject and kind of break that negative thought process and say, “Hey, you know what? There’s other things. You don’t have to escape nor end everything. We are capable. We are blessed.” Even in the Filipino Community Simbang Gabi, a traditional Christmas celebration held in numerous churches in Calgary and area, that sense of charity and mercy can be felt. Families volunteer, some bring potluck, others serve. When the collections from the mass were collected many had given $5 rather than a higher tax creditable donation. Truly, this Jubilee Year will not only mark how we respond to the times but it will also mark a great change in the heart of every one. Joyous Christmas to all and a Prosperous New Year!

Christmas is here to all of us despite the threat of global economic and the onslaught of natural calamities, political scandals and rampant graft and corruption. We, Filipinos despite the recent devastated catastrophe brought by the strongest typhoon ever happened in the Philippines, still the strong faith to the ALMIGHTY GOD remains within among us. We are born with innate resiliency. We support our own resilience, there is our community, we have sense of belonging, of continuity, of being connected to others, to ideas and values that give us strength and courage to go through life and move on. We can rise up again, bounce back because of JESUS CHRIST, our SAVIOUR and REDEEMER. Christmas is a very significant event that we have to celebrate with gratitude. This is a tribute to our colorful Filipino traditions of celebrating Christmas. In the Philippines, Filipinos celebrate Christmas with traditions handed down by our ancestors from generation to generation. From the early days Christmas is a celebration of simplicity and purity with our observance of our customs and traditions. We have experi-

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS-THE FILIPINO TRADITIONAL WAY enced and discovered the true joys of Christmas that make Christmas meaningful through these traditions. Nowadays during this time of the year, the Christmas spirits are all around. Homes are aglow with rainbow-colored lanterns (Parol) and lights blinking on Christmas trees and in the streets. Every church has a way of providing divinely inspiring music floating through the air from within their hallowed walls. Group of carolers sing their merry way from house to house and at times to the accompaniment of fireworks, unleashing a medley of dancing colors in the skies. Everywhere the air is suffused with spontaneous gaiety and festivity during Christmas time. . Christmas remains the most observed Christian holidays. It is the much-awaited season of the year. The Philippines, a predominantly Christian nation has earned a distinction of celebrating the world’s longest Christmas season. Christmas carols are heard as early as September. It is only after Epiphany – the first Sunday after New Year’s Day-that the
Christmas decorations are removed. The Filipino traditional way of celebrating Christmas is ushered in by the nine-day dawn masses that start December 16th known as “Simbang Gabi” or night mass. Most churches are ablaze in multi-colored lights outlining their facades and serene “Belen” (the nativity scene). This mass is the most important Filipino tradition during Christmas time. It begins as early as four in the morning. Church bells ring as a way to wake up people. Going to mass as early for nine consecutive days is meant to show the churchgoers devotion to their faith and heighten anticipation for the nativity of the LORD JESUS. After hearing mass, families partake of the traditional Christmas delicacies, either during breakfast at home and or immediately outside the church where they are sold. There are vendors who offer a bounty of native delicacies including bibingka,(rice flour and egg based cake cooked using coals on top and under) Puto-Bumbong, (a purple sticky rice delicacy which is steamed in bamboo tubes, with brown sugar and coconut shavings as
condiments) salabat (hot ginger tea) and tsokolate (thick Spanish cocoa from cacao). On the 24th of December, the day before Christmas day, is the much-anticipated noche-buena-the traditional Christmas eve feast after the midnight mass. The noche-buena is the family midnight feast-- Family members and friends dine together around twelve mid -night on traditional nocheBuena. Some would open presents/gifts at this time. There is also exchanging gifts from friends. Christmas day is primarily a family affair. Preferably in the morning, families visit members of the extended family notably the elders-grandparents-Lolo and Lola in order to pay their respects. This custom is an age-old tradition called “Pagmamano” done by touching one’s forehead to the elder’s hand, saying “Mano Po” Aguinaldo, regalo or money in the form of crisp, fresh-from the bank bills is given after the “Pagmamano” especially to younger children. A Christmas lunch usually follows the Christmas greetings to each other. The lunch is heavily dependent on the finances or budget of the
family. Rich families tend to prepare grand feasts that consist of Jamon, queso-de-bola, lechon, and other Filipino delicacies. Poor families choose to cook simple meals, nevertheless still special. When the family is settled after the lunch, the giving of gifts is usually done. Grandparents are expected to give gifts or Aguinaldo to their grandchildren, some to their godchildren or “inaanak”. On New Year eve, families gather for the “Media Noche” or midnight meal—a feast that is also supposed to symbolize their hopes for a prosperous new year. Christmas season officially ends on the feast of the Three Kings, also known as the feast of Epiphany. The feast of the Three Kings is also known in other countries as Twelfth Night, referring to the twelve days between Christmas Day and the coming of the Three Kings. Some children leave their shoes out, so that the Three Kings would leave behind gifts like candy or money inside. Christmas would not be complete without the traditional Philippine Christmas symbols and decorations. Christmas
lights are strung about, as the tail of the Star of Bethlehem in belen, the star symbolizes our faith in Christ as the eternal light which flourishes the way to HIS kingdom., Christmas trees symbolize the triumph of the spirit over man’s wickedness, his glorious victory standing out like a banner at the head of marchers in the grand procession of life. Angels symbolizes the celestial beings which is part in the drama of redemption. The animals at the stable symbolize the violent passion of man’s lower nature according to mystics. The savior was sent to redeem him from his fall and his state of sin. The manger reminds us of the lowly surroundings that signify the humility of the REDEEMER, as stated in the scriptures. Every house big or small is decorated with colorful lights. Filipino homes and buildings are adorned with beautiful star lanterns, called “parol” and the “belen” representing the Nativity scene. It depicts the Infant Jesus Christ in the manger, surrounded by the Virgin Mary, St Joseph, the shepherds, their flock, the Magi, some stable animals and angels. As reported and published on December 16, 2015 by The Maharlikan. MANILA, Philippines – The Australian Air Force has released a statement that an Australian military surveillance plane has flown near disputed areas of the South China Sea(West Philippine Sea). Tensions in the region have mounted since China transformed reefs in the South China Sea
into small islands capable of supporting military facilities, a move the United States says threatens free passage in an area through which one-third of the world’s oil passes. Now a Royal Australian Air Force patrol plane has carried out patrols in air space around the area. “A Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion was conducting a routine maritime patrol in the region as part of Operation Gateway from November 25 to December 4,” a defence department spokesperson told AFP.
“Under Operation Gateway, the Australian Defence Force conducts routine maritime surveillance patrols in the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea as a part of Australia’s enduring contribution to the preservation of regional security and stability in Southeast Asia.” The Royal Australian Air Force reiterated that it will continue its surveillance flights in the West Philippine Sea in accordance with the International law.

As of December 6, 2015 the average processing time for sponsoring parents and grandparents from the Philippines according to the CIC website is around 76 months or 6.3 years. For many Permanent Residents (PRs) and Canadian Citizens who want to bring their parents or grandparents to Canada... this is simply too long a wait. A practical and a much faster solution is to sponsor parents and grandparents to come to Canada under the Super Visa program. The parents and grandparents can come to Canada sooner and you can still apply for them to become immigrants while they are visiting Canada. Listed below are the details regarding the Super Visitor Visa program for parents and grandparents:
consider several factors before deciding if the person is admissible. The person must be a genuine visitor to Canada who will leave by choice at the end of the visit. The following things would be considered by the Visa officer prior to approving a Super Visitor Visa: the person’s ties to the home country; the purpose of the visit; the person’s family and financial situation; the overall economic and political stability of the home country; and a written invitation from a Canadian or a PR host. Note: The person cannot include dependants in the Super Visitor Visa application. Only the person’s spouse or common-law partner is eligible to accompany him/her under this program. 2. Minimum income threshold to sponsor parents and grandparents The sponsoring person (ie. child or grandchild’s) income must meet or exceed the minimum necessary income (MNI) threshold that is identified by the Canadian government based on the size of the sponsoring family. See the MNI Table effective for Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2015 shown below:
Size of family Unit
tions Persons applying for the Super Visitor Visa must provide the following: a. A valid travel document (such as a passport). b. Two (2) recent passport photographs of each family member. Make sure the photographs meet the Visa office requirements. c. The application fee unless the person is from a visa-exempt country. The fee will not be refunded, even if your application is not accepted. d. Proof that the person has enough money for his/ her visit to Canada. The amount of money may vary depending on the circumstances of the visit, how long the person will stay and whether the person will stay in a hotel, or with friends or children. You can get more information from the Canadian visa office in your country or region. e. Other documents such as identification cards, proof of employment (if any), a letter of invitation from children/ relatives or friends in Canada, and a proposed travel itinerary. In order to obtain a Parent or Grandparent Super Visitor Visa, the person also need to provide: Evidence of the parent or grandparent relationship
Minimum Necessary Income
1 person (your child or grandchild) $23,861 2 persons $29,706 3 persons $36, 520 4 persons $44,340 5 persons $50,590 6 persons $56,718 7 persons $63,147 > 7 persons, each additional person , add $6,429
1. Who can apply To apply for the Parent and Grandparent Super Visitor Visa, the person must: a. be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident (PR) of Canada .Need to provide proof of relationship like birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other official documents naming you as parent or grandparent. b. be found admissible to Canada c. provide a written statement of financial support from his/her child or grandchild in Canada who meets a minimum income threshold (LICO). d. prove that he/she have bought Canadian medical insurance coverage for at least one year e. undergo an Immigration
To calculate the family size, the sponsoring person counts the following: a. The sponsoring child or grandchild counts: a. himself b. his spouse or common-law partner, c. his dependent children, d. any person he may have sponsored previously and for whom the sponsorship agreement and undertaking are still in effect. b. He counts the number of persons he will be sponsoring: a. parent, and b. parent’s spouse or common-law partner (if applicable). c. He adds the number of persons covered by steps a and b. The total represents his family size. d. He looks at the current MNI Table, to determine if he meets the minimum required for his family size. e. To demonstrate that he meets the minimum income required, your child or grandchild has to provide proof of income (eg. CRA Notice of Assessment, T4 slips, Certificate of Employment, etc.).

3. Required documents when submitting applica-
to the Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident (PR) you wish to visit (e.g., birth certificate, baptismal certificate or other official document naming you as parent or grandparent); Proof that your child or grandchild meets the Low Income Cut-Off (LICO) threshold; Proof that you have bought a private medical insurance valid for a minimum of one year from a Canadian insurance company that: Covers health care, hospitalization and repatriation; Provides a minimum coverage of $100,000; and Is valid for each entry to Canada and available for review by a Port of Entry officer. 4. Medical Examinations The person will be required to undergo an immigration medical examination in order to come to Canada. Instructions on completing the examination will be provided by the visa office. The person is not required to complete the examination before the submission of application forms. However, it would be a good idea to have a medical check-up before submission of the Super Visitor Visa ap-
plication so that there are no surprises with regards to the person’s health condition. When medical results are submitted up-front, routine cases benefit from faster processing since CIC does not have to request them at a later date. If you choose to have an upfront medical exam, you must submit proof that you completed the medical examination by an authorized Panel Physician with your Super Visa application. Failure to do so may result in processing delays. 5. Processing Fees As of December 6, 2015, the fee for the Super Visitor Visa is $100 for one parent. The Super Visa is a multiple entry visa. This fee is subject to change... so check with the local Visa Office on what the current fee schedule is before applying. It is good to obtain a multiple entry visa, just in case the parent or grandparent gets a job offer with an LMIA while in Canada and the person has to exit Canada to obtain a valid Work Permit. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs): Listed below are some frequently asked questions about the Super Visitor Visa program. As an added bonus, there is also information at the end of this article on how to check if the “immigration consultant” with whom you may be dealing with and paying a fee - has a license or not and also how to report “fake” consultants practicing without a license to the CBSA or CIC. Q1: What makes the Parent and Grandparent Super Visitor Visa different from what is available now as a Visitor Visa or TRV (Temporary Resident Visa)? A: Currently, visitors to Canada usually may only visit for six months at a time. Most visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension, and pay a new fee, every six months. With the Parent and Grandparent Super Visitor Visa, eligible parents and grandparents can stay up to 2 years and only pay renewal fees every 2 years and have certainty that they will be able to enjoy the company of their families in Canada for a longer period of time. With the parent and grandparent Super Visa, eligible parents and grandparents can visit family in Canada for up to two years without the need to renew their visitor status. Q2: What is the processing time for Super Visa from the Philippines? A. As of December 6, 2015, based on the CIC website the current processing time from the Philippines for TRVs is 8 days, if the application package is considered complete. However, for Super Visas, it would probably be more realistic to estimate several
weeks. Q3. What’s the difference between the Super Visa and the 10- year multiple entry Visa? A: The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that provides multiple entries for a period up to 10 years. The key difference is that the Super Visa allows an individual to stay for up to two years on initial entry into Canada, while a 10-year multiple entry visa would only allow a status period for each entry of six months only. The person has to renew or extend status every six months. Q4: If parents and grandparents are already in Canada and their Visitor Visa will expire soon, what should they do? Will they be eligible to apply for the new Super Visitor Visa from within Canada? A: No, they cannot apply from within Canada for the multiple-entry Super Visitor Visa. The Super Visa application must be done outside Canada at a Visa office. However, they can apply to extend their valid regular Visitor Visa within Canada. Q5: What happens if a parent or grandparent (PGP) with a sponsorship application already submitted decides that they would prefer to visit Canada up to 2 years instead of immigrating and not becoming a Permanent Resident? Can they cancel their PR application and apply for a Super Visitor Visa instead? Will they be refunded the fees paid already? A: PGP sponsorship applications can be withdrawn at any time. Whether a full or partial refund will be given is determined by the stage at which the application is at in the queue. If processing has started, only a portion of your payment may be refunded. If, however, processing has not started on your application, a full refund will be given. Please allow up to 16 weeks for the delivery of your refund. (NOTE: This decision should be seriously considered. There is a big difference between the rights and benefits enjoyed by Canadian permanent residents compared to Visitors with Super Visa. Visitors are not entitled to work in Canada or receive Canada pension, free medical coverage, Canadian passport, etc.) Q6: How do I check, if the “consultant” with whom I am dealing with and paying a fee is a licensed immigration consultant? A: Licensed immigration consultants are listed in the Immigration Consultants of Canada Regulatory Council (ICCRC) website members’ directory: http://secure.iccrc-crcic.ca/ search-new/EN ICCRC is the regulatory body for licensed Canadian Immigration Consultants. ICCRC replaced CSIC (Cana-
dian Society of Immigration Consultants) when Bill C-35 was enacted as law effective June 30, 2011 by the Canadian government. ICCRC is now responsible for regulating the activities of licensed Canadian Immigration Consultants who are members and who provide immigration advice for a fee. Stiff penalties are now in effect for persons without a license who provide immigration advice for a fee (ie. up to $100,000 fine and/ or 2 years in jail). Starting June 30, 2011, only licensed immigration consultants, licensed Canadian lawyers and paralegals in Ontario who are members of the Ontario Law Society can charge a fee to process and handle Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIAs) applications, Work Permits, Permanent Resident (PR) applications, Family Sponsorship applications and any other services involving immigration. NOTE: If the person is not listed in the ICCRC website member’s directory then chances are the person is NOT a licensed immigration consultant and should be reported to CBSA and CIC for illegal activities. Q7: Where should I report “fake consultants” providing immigration advice or processing immigration related documents like LMIAs, Work Permits, PR applications, etc. without a license? A: Fake consultants charging fees, providing immigration advice and practicing without a license after June 30, 2011 can be reported to the CIC and CBSA for investigation. Documentary evidence (ie. proof of illegal activities) such as: copies of contracts, receipts of payments made, copies of LMIA applications, processed LMIAs, Work Permits, PR applications, letters, emails, pictures, samples of advertising materials, sample flyers, promo materials, video of illegal transactions, etc. should be collected and provided to support the allegations of illegal activities. NOTE: Beware of “consultants” who offer you no GST and does not want to issue payment receipts. You can report unlicensed consultants by calling: Legal Disclaimer: This news article is designed for general information only. Alberta giving grants to raise awareness of dangers of fentanyl and other drugs Proceeds of Crime grants will be available to police and their community partners to raise drug awareness and prevention. Proceeds of Crime grants are supported with funds forfeited to the province following federally-prosecuted Criminal Code offences. They are available to police agencies throughout the province and helps fund police drug prevention and awareness programming with community partners. “Recent deaths in our province have highlighted the tragic consequences of street drugs and just how dangerous fentanyl can be. These grants will help our law enforcement partners increase awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and other street drugs through prevention and awareness initiatives. All Albertans deserve to live in safe and resilient communities,” said Kathleen Ganley, Minister of Justice and Solicitor
General The Proceeds of Crime Fund is a joint provincial-federal fund directed specifically at law enforcement for activities relating to crime prevention and drug education. (Source: Alberta.ca) Alberta toughens distracted driving penalties; demerits to be added to fines EDMONTON — Tougher penalties for distracted driving in Alberta are going
to include demerits come Jan. 1. Fines went up to $287 after new legislation was passed by the previous Tory government last spring. But demerits still had to be approved by cabinet. Traffic fines across Alberta have jumped 35 per cent, including the penalty for distracted driving. The fine for distracted driving in Alberta has increased from $172 to $288 starting Friday, which includes things like using a handheld phone, texting, and reading or writing while behind the wheel. Ninety per cent of the poll’s respondents said they believe texting and driving to be socially unacceptable, yet more than a third of Saskatchewan residents still do it. Premier Rachel Notley’s NDP government has now done that, so drivers who get caught not paying attention will get three demerit points on their record. “I think anything that they
can do to try and discourage distracted driving has got to be a positive step,” Const. Brian McLeod with the Sherwood Park RCMP said. “If your mind isn’t on your driving what’s it doing?” Distracted driving includes using a hand-held cellphone or GPS, as well as reading, writing, eating or personal grooming. There were 87,633 convictions for distracted driving across Alberta from September 2011 to March 2015, according to the government. Ninety-seven per cent of the incidents involved a driver using a hand-held device. “Given these numbers, we are following through on Albertans’ wishes for stronger penalties for distracted driving,” Transportation Minister Brian Mason said. Any driver charged with distracted driving before Jan. 1 will not be assigned demerit points, even if the fine is paid in the New Year. (Source: Canadian News Agency)

Mr. Felix Guerrero of FSE Financial (major sponsor) greeted the crowd with warm welcome and good will. The presence of a number of honorary consuls of different countries graced the occasion. The food complemented the elegance and sophistication of the event, though a number of seniors exhibited less appreciation. The menu posed a great deal of challenge to their taste buds and dental accessories. The crowd roared with laughter and appreciation when the kids appeared and walked the run way with Jaki’s fashion creation for kids. Moments later petite models caught the attention of the crowd with their unique, casual and functional attire. Everybody including the hotel’s food servers (lined up in one corner of the ballroom) wowed when a number of Filipina-Calgarians modeled some of the collections. A local Band sustained
the tempo and energy in the room. People expressed their joy thru dancing, chatting and catching up with friends. A large number of the senior snaked out of the hall when dancing culminated because of loud interference to their auditory system. Indeed, the night showcased another icon from Manila. Jaki has proven once again her creativity, innovation and practicality on the world stage of fashion. One of the most interesting and worth-mentioning aspects of Jaki’s fashion enterprise was her passion to use local materials as the center piece. Fabrics of her creations are made of Abaca, pineapple and other local plants grown in the Philippines. Jaki’s show in Calgary added deeper appreciation of and passion for our fashion amongst Filipino-Calgarians. One elderly said: “the beauty of our fashion is lasting and enduring”.

Freedom and prosperity are essential parts of the American (Canadian) Dream, but many people overlook financial stability. In fact, learning how to spend wisely, protect your money, credit, and home, and make plans for your retirement are some of the most important things you can do for yourself and your family. 1. Know your options before shopping for a home- Get help finding an affordable place to live, and learn the basics of mortgages, including how to avoid predatory loans. 2. Get the right car for you- Research safety records and recalls and compare offers, specials, and warranties before buying a new or used car. 3. Understand a contract before signing- Never sign
a document with blank spaces or one that you don’t fully understand. If in doubt, seek help from a legal expert. 4. Get estimates on home repairs- Compare estimates and offers before hiring a contractor for your next home project, and be sure you’re happy with the work before you make the final payment. 5. Shred important documents- Before throwing them away, destroy any documents such as old bills, pay stubs, and bank statements that contain personal information. These could fall into the wrong hands, compromising your privacy and identity. 6. Monitor your creditLearn how to get a copy of your annual free credit report and make sure all information is correct. 7. Learn to file a consumer complaint- You have the right to complain if you have a genuine consumer
problem. Knowing how to do it correctly will help the process move faster. 8. Finance a higher education- There are plenty of options available to you. Learn about financial aid including grants, scholarships, federal loans, and payment plans to help pay for your future. 9. Plan for the long runHaving a long-term plan can protect you and your loved ones even after you are gone. This includes planning for retirement, having a will to protect your family’s finances, and making funeral arrangements. For more financial advice, order or download your free copy of the 2015 Consumer Action Handbook. It’ll show you how to save money and write a complaint letter that gets results. Nov. 13, 2015. Fairmont Palliser Calgary. The superstition behind Friday the 13th was no match to the festive mood of no less than 200 people at the ballroom of Palliser Hotel. All eyes focused on the fashion creation of one of the Philippines’ fashion designers, Jaki Penalosa. Her years of showcasing authentic and original design attracted a throng of admirers in Asia and around the world. The night started with a thirst quenching cocktail. A contingent of Filipino personalities visibly strolled along, met, greeted and complimented each other. Well dressed Filipino seniors occupied almost all the hotel’s guests’ couches while waiting for the doors’ opening of the ball room. An aura of excitement and great anticipation flooded the huge foyer and long aisle of the hotel’s lobby.

The Mighty Peak of
Ha-Ling Angelito de Jesus PHOTOS & TEXT
One of the most challenging hikes in Canmore—stands nearly eight thousand feet at the summit, Ha-ling is regarded as the most scenic and rewarding climb in the Rockies. Only about 15 minute drive to the parking lot from downtown Canmore, the trailhead begins unobtrusively upon reaching the top of a steep walkway to the footbridge that crosses the dike. If you’re up to the challenge and high adrenaline rush of a short but punishing hike—you’ve come to the right place. To prepare for this hike, first of all, you need a good pair of hiking boots and trekking poles are highly
recommended for ascent and descent, if you don’t have this valuable piece of gear, you’ll soon discover as you began the ascent, and most of all a good overall physical condition. On an average, it would take about 2 ½ to 3 hours for the beginning hiker to get to the summit. It could take longer depending how often you stop to take in the views. It is a very busy trail. I got there around 10am and it was already very busy. On my descent, I had to stop a few times for fellow hikers to get through before I can continue. There were some hikers that would stop at the trail to catch their breath which is common for such route. For the first hour of the ascent, you would go through steep and heavily forested path. No
need to worry of any bear here due to heavy human activity. There are times you need to do some mini scramble, but once you’ve reached the clearing the reward begins. This is the scramble portion of the climb, loose rocks and pebbly path will have to be navigated through, but extra care must be taken to avoid some serious injury if you happen to lose your footing. For the next 30 minutes or less you will reach the summit at 7,898 feet and thereby the reward of the magnificent view of the whole Canmore and surrounding mountain range unobstructed at 360 degrees is at your disposal. This is the perfect time to have your lunch or for some a good sip of

Star Wars Gets The Ball Rolling With A New Droid Ruel Sarmiento CONTRIBUTOR
Isn’t it a great way to close 2015 with a new Star Wars movie? Ever since the first teaser of The Force Awakens was dropped more than a year ago, we were left curious about this rolling robot that looks like R2-D2’s relative. Director JJ Abrams later revealed that BB8 was not CGI but was actually a practical effect. It was nothing like a full working droid. There’s puppeteers and a whole lot of green screen going on during filming. The technical team behind the practical effects, Pinewood Studios, pursued working on a fully functional BB8 droid even after filming which debuted at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, April of this year. Also enter Sphero, a Boulder, Colorado-based tech company which was one of the startups earlier selected for Disney’s accelerator program. Sphero met with Walt Disney CEO, Bob Iger, who was privy of probably most things that is going on
wine while enjoying the view and watching the Hang Gliders swooping to-and-fro. Once you’re all fueled up and ready to head down, this is when you will need the trekking pole more than going up. Due to loose rocks and steep terrain, it is very easy to lose your balance and you could potentially step on other loose rocks that may cause you to tumble down. Down at the dike, if you don’t mind the cold water, you can go for a swim as some people do. I don’t like the idea of getting wet and feeling the chilly water after a good sweat from the hike so I forego the idea even if it was tempting. the new Star Wars’ set. Iger showed photos of BB8 to the Sphero team headed by Paul Berberian, asking them if they could make a functional toy out of the design. BB-8 is proving to be a new fan favorite and I can’t
wait to see it in action onscreen. The BB-8 toy by Sphero is now available for $189.95 at Apple stores across Canada. Star Wars : The Force Awakens opens December 18.
Downtown Canmore Nothing could be more
satisfying after a good day of trekking and a good dinner at nearby restaurants than to have a good soak on the hot tub at your hotel if you chose to stay overnight. This is my preference when I head out to the mountains for a hike and photo expedition. The town of Canmore offers a variety of restaurants, bars and art galleries. Every time I come to Canmore, I often visit a few galleries; I find this to have therapeutic effect on me as I go through the displays and read up on the art pieces and learning about the artists. Head home I must, a mini vacation I had, a short drive away from home to see a world class landscape and hikes makes it so privileged to be living for just a little over an hour from it all.
I have climbed many mountains from near and far, I always go back to Canmore to even just walk around the bikeways, pathways and river walks. There is something so captivating about it, perhaps the amazing views of the surrounding landscapes or perhaps the mountain culture or the friendly folks, or perhaps becoming a resident beckons, but for now I will leave the mystery and when time is on my side it will surely reveal itself. Champion Donaire, Christmas Greeting Captured WBO Junior from Senator Enverga Featherweight Dear friends,
With the Christmas season upon us, I want us all to remember the message inspired by events two millennia ago in Bethlehem, and what this time of year should remind us of about hope, about peace and about sharing what we have with others.
Despite of left eye was swollen, right eye was cut and a twisted left ankle yy the time the fight was over, Donaire, regained a champion status and grabbed the WBO Junior Featherweight title. According to Donaire “We’re both warriors.” and “I am Blessed during his interview with ESPN. Donaire , already a world titleholder, won his seventh full title after this gruesome fight. According to Bob Arum during his interview with The Manila Times, 2016 promises to be a big year for Donaire, especially after coming
out of a victory via a unanimous decision against Mexican fighter Cesar Juarez on Dec. 11, at the Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “It was a hard, tremendous fight,” Juarez said after loosing to Donaire. Juares made some significant punches that hampered him for the second half of the fight. Although Donaire dominated on the scorecards, winning 117-109, 116-110 and 116-110, this was a grueling battle. In the fourth round, Donaire had Juarez all but out. He landed a big

CELEBRATING CHRISTMAS THE FILIPINO TRADITIONAL WAY the traditional Christmas caroling –going from house to house singing Christmas carols using tambourines made with “Tansans” strung on a piece of wire , then wait expectantly for the owner of the house to reward them with coins. The famous songs they usually render is “Ang Pasko ay Sumapit and “ Sa Maybahay” Silent Night, Joy To the World and other famous carols. Christmas is a season of love. We were taught to observe with holy, joy and alleluias not only from December 25 to January 6 but throughout our life. Christmas is for giving. Since the first time the joyful yearly event has been celebrated around the world, to remember the arrival of the SAVIOUR, the idea of sharing and receiving has become the most significant doctrine. The tradition of good-natured exchanges of tangible and intangible
gifts has continuously went on through the years that one can only imagine how many presents have exactly been distributed and accepted by individuals in all of history who have religiously observed the traditional way of celebrating the birth of JESUS CHRIST. Celebrating Christmas in the Philippines is really the best time of the year to be together with families, relatives and friends. Filipinos all over the world make their extra effort to be home for Christmas. It is their happiest moment to enjoy and share every blessings and graces to loved-ones but the most is, the time where we can triumphantly announce and rejoice the birth of JESUS CHRIST, Our Savior—The GIVER OF LIFE and offer our great thanks for everything we enjoy in life. TO ALL---WISHING YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!
right hand on Juarez’s chin to knock him down 30 seconds into the round. Then he hurt him with a left hook, Donaire’s best punch, and was teeing off on him. Still with a minute to go in the round, Donaire creamed him with a left hook for the second knockdown and continued to punish Juarez with combinations and uppercuts for the rest of the round. To many, Christmas can become a trying period. Those who are separated from their loved ones, like many of our kababayans are, find it difficult, but please keep the love that those far away feel for you and you feel for them warm in your hearts. Keeping the hope of your reunification will help you persevere over the holidays, as may the companionship of those around you. I wish for us all to come together as a community of brothers and sisters during this special time to share of ourselves and to spread the message of peace among us both in our souls and in our hearts. This peace will keep us united and keep us strong.
From my family to yours, I wish you a very merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Maligayang Pasko at manigong bagong taon sa inyong lahat. Sincerely, The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr. Senator

TFC and OWWA renew ties to support overseas Filipinos’ journey outside the homeland and back The premier network for OFs and the government agency responsible for the welfare of migrant workers launch ‘Abot-Kamay,’ a music video that speaks of service within reach December 16, 2015 (Quezon City, Philippines) – The Filipino Channel (TFC), the network in the service of Filipinos worldwide, and Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration (OWWWA), the agency tasked to oversee the welfare of migrant workers, renewed their commitment to serve the overseas Filipinos (OFs) in formal ceremonies Monday at the Restaurant 9501 at the Eugenio Lopez Communications Center (ELJCC), EL Drive, Diliman, Quezon City, Philippines. TFC and OWWA, partners for the latter’s Pre-Departure Orientation Program (PDOP) and information dissemination efforts since 2013, entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) anew,
taking a more 360 degree approach to service for OFs – from pre-departure to return. Part of this approach is to explore other communication tools to reach out to the overseas Filipino audience. Committed to serve Filipinos in every part of the world, TFC and OWWA launched “Abot Kamay,” a music video that assures Filipinos who have chosen the path of overseas work that OWWA is within reach wherever they are in the world. Currently, OWWA has 31 posts (Philippine Overseas Labor Organization or POLO) in 25 countries. To be able to enjoy the benefits of these programs, especially its education, repatriation and reintegration programs, OFs are encouraged to join as members. As members, the OFs can enjoy information and counselling programs pre-departure; outreach and assistance programs in-region, and livelihood and financial programs upon their return.
According to Administrator Rebecca Calzado this is where TFC’s role is crucial. “TFC and OWWA have a shared clientele which is the OFWs and their families. We have a shared objective – to serve OFs and their families. One of the more important services that we can render is information so communication is very important. In government, we do have lines of communication but of course that is limited. But given the reach of TFC, and the more expansive platforms for communications, we have tapped the network.” Calzado further explained that the partnership is extra important because information is key. “We believe an informed worker is an empowered worker. Having the correct information at the timely manner is important. Through TFC’s platforms which is much wider than ours, we can have a good partnership.” ABS-CBN Global Ltd. Asia Pacific Branch
Managing Director Ailene Averion affirms that like OWWA, TFC’s service is rooted in its goals to keep OFs’ connection with the homeland and provide the company of a Kapamilya wherever he may be. In keeping true its vision and mission, TFC has been relentlessly taking this service a notch higher despite the barriers. Averion said: “Serving our OFWs abroad is as fulfilling as it is challenging. We see how Administrator Calzado and her team tirelessly build programs that will protect the welfare of our kababayans so we in TFC will make sure that we assist the agency in realizing its vision. It is after all our common goal that brought us here together today. We hope that this relationship goes beyond where it is today.” Going beyond the two agencies’ information dissemination efforts in 2013, the partnership now explores more communication tools, specifically the music video ‘Abot Kamay.’ Written and composed by Vehnee Saturno and performed by one of “Your Face Sounds Familiar” top five performers
KZ Tandingan, the song tells the OFs that wherever their journey brings them, OWWA provides them the avenues to enrich their lives and those of their families through its counselling, information dissemination efforts, legal assistance and outreach programs and most of all, hope for a better tomorrow with their families in the homeland. For Saturno, the fact that he had relatives who are OFs themselves helped him in creating the music but he also had to do his own research. “The heart of OFs is not one that is easy to let go. Everything is easier now because of the internet. But this song focuses on how family is within reach beyond the obvious means. There should be real communication despite the distance. It should be rooted very deeply and love is the foundation,” the award-winning composer shared from his own research. The music video was produced by ABS-CBN Global Ltd.’s Marketing Communications team headed by Jay Santiago, Audie Avecilla-Riola and
Charles Bautista. The music video was produced by Maureen Paril with assistance from Paz - Amor Valera and coordination by Rowena Lucero. Since 2013, TFC has been supporting OWWA beyond its PDOS program and seminars. Aside from the counselling program, TFC has been sharing information on OWWA’s programs and events through its exclusive programs “Balitang Global,” and “TFC Connect” and via its community billboard “Global Post (What’s Up in the Middle East)”. Just this December, TFC supported OWWA’s Model OFW Family of the Year at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC). Also this December, TFC will once again support OWWA as it mounts its Family Day in Legazpi City, Albay. With a common track, a passion to serve OFWs and the countless opportunities that are available, service can truly take many forms for both TFC and OWWA. Block Heater First of all what is it and why? A block heater warms the engine coolant, which warms the engine block and the oil. Winter can be hard on your vehicle, and a block heater keeps your engine warm to protect several parts and components, and to make it easier for your vehicle to start.
Less oil flow means more friction — and that means engine parts wear faster than they should. So, this will prevent us to start and warm up our vehicle for about 10 to 15 minutes. But when its plug in, vehicle will warm up in 5 minutes. That means you save gas and reduce tailpipe emissions.
Starting an engine when it’s severely cold stresses your engine. When it’s cold, your oil gets thick, resulting of at least a couple negative side effects.First, thicker oil increases the amount of work required by the starter to turn the crank engine. That creates longer starting times which would drain your battery. Second, when oil is too thick, it can’t shoot through all the engine’s channels to lubricate critical components specially the upper part of the engine. The result is when your engine starts, those parts scrape against each other without any lubrication. When the engine starts, it pumps oil through the engine block to lubricate moving parts.
Whats the ideal temperature and how long? While many drivers plug their vehicles in every night in the winter, you only need to use your block heater once the temperature reaches – 15 C. According to Natural Resources Canada, 3 hours minimum to 4 hours maximum. Why we can’t just plug in overnight? Some studies found that block heater can heat up the engine maximum of 4 hours. After that, the extra heat is lost to the cold air outside. Ok guys now we have reason to go to Canadian tires or Home depot to buy block heater timer.

WIKIPEDIA
Well, stay warm this winter folks and enjoy your holidays.
BLOCK HEATER
A block heater warms an engine to increase the chances that the engine will start as well as warm up the vehicle faster than it normally would in extremely cold weather. The most common type is an electric heating element in the cylinder block, connected through a power cord often routed through the vehicle’s grille. The block heater may replace one of the engine’s core plugs. In this fashion, the heater element is immersed in the engine’s coolant, which then keeps most of the engine warm. There is no pump with this type of heater. They may also be installed in line with one of the radiator or heater hoses. Block heaters that run on the vehicle’s own gasoline or diesel fuel supply are also available; these do not require an external power source. The coolant is heated and circulat-
ed, usually by thermosiphon, through the engine and the vehicle’s heater core. Heaters are also available for engine oil so that warm oil can quickly circulate throughout the engine during start up. The easier starting results from warmer, less viscous engine oil and less condensation of fuel on cold metal surfaces inside the engine; thus an engine block heater reduces a vehicle’s emission of unburned hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide; also heat is available more quickly for the passenger compartment and glass defogging.[1] Block heaters or coolant heaters are also found on permanently installed systems using diesel engines to allow standby generator sets to take up load quickly in an emergency.

There is no need to act swiftly now and although sometimes the problem may not seem resolvable, do not lose faith in yourself and act wisely.Be careful in the relationship with your partner, harmony can easily be replaced by a fierce opposition at this time Focus on one that looks the most practical and see what happens before the month ends. Those old attractions may spark your interest but not hold it. You’re feeling smarter about your love life - good for you.
One thing is clear - do not expect a positive result that meets your hopes. The easiest way for you to be in this period is to decide to take everything in as a game, a very unusual and an ambitious one, but sill a game.
SCORPIO
The stars warn that the likelihood is high that you will be disappointed in some of your old and, as you thought, the most faithful companions. It will be painful and difficult. But do not despair, because even a negative experience is still an experience. And the person who betrayed your trust, will soon pay for it.

Months ago a good friend of mine bought a SUV and decided to donate his black 96’ 626 Cronos HD (Hail Damaged). My ears and eyes perked when I heard and he immediately picked up the cue. The deal was sealed and a week later I driving the car to my garage. A licensed mechanic signed off the certificate of mechanical inspection for insurance purposes. The car was still road worthy, except for a minor issue. The prognosis was not bleak. One of the struts had to be replaced. And a used one would be okay as new ones are quite expensive. Jack, my friend turned super duper mechanic spent his spare time mostly at the yard of Pick N Pull. The place provided much needed parts for dying vehicles. For a buck (entrance fee) anyone can rummage, pick, pull and buy (at cheap prices) car parts of any make and model. The following week Jack was not available. I decided to explore the yard with my very limited tools, 5 % mechanical acumen and seldom-used muscles. In the distance, a gutted 626, with hood and trunk open, stared at me. It took me minutes to find the right wrench size to loosen the bolts of the strut. In the process I experienced solace, undivided attention, sweat, bruised head, blistered palm and strained ligaments. When I reached the parking lot of the yard my limping Cronos yapped when I opened the trunk. Any day his organ (strut) transplant would be over. I left the yard with a sense of relief. The following week when Jack gave his second opinion, 626’s problem
was not the strut. Rubber sealant of the axle was ripped open. Off we went to the yard. I witnessed first hand Jack’s precision in picking and pulling the needed axle. Once we secured the “organ” we proceeded to a friend’s truck shop. The transplant lasted for two hours. Everybody was happy. While driving the Cronos the next day, it occurred to me that in the midst of the rusty, broken, wrecked, oily, musty, dusty, smelly and dead yard, I felt satisfaction and fully appreciated the meaning of hard work (outside my daily work routine). I experienced the very essence of accomplishment in the physical realm. My time spent in the yard smashing, dismembering, wrenching, picking and pulling parts was indeed
a stress reliever. Nobody cared what I did there. It relieved me of my tension, worries, inactivity (mental and physical) and demands of life for the rest of the day. It dawned on me a parallel reality in life. As we float in the sea of humanity, ripping off, taking advantage, picking and pulling people down are very common. However, I still believe each one of us possesses good “quality parts” (love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control) that we can share (or recycle) to fix and heal our society from decay. What quality part/s are we willing to give away to others this Season? Jesus was born for the salvation of mankind! He gave his own life for us.

is the difference between Grace and Karma.” “At the center of all religions is the idea of Karma. You know, what you put out comes back to you: an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, or in physics—in physical laws—every action is met by an equal or an opposite one,” explains Bono. “And yet, along comes this idea called Grace to upend all that. . . . Love interrupts, if you like, the consequences of your actions, which in my case is very good news indeed, because I’ve done a lot of stupid stuff.” The interviewer asks, like what? “That’s between me and God. But I’d be in big trouble if Karma was going to finally be my judge,” says Bono. “It doesn’t excuse my mistakes, but I’m holding out

Dear Madame KC, Hello to you and to all readers. Me and my ex broke up 4 years ago, we lasted for 3yrs. We we are so in love back then, pero high school palang kami nun. We made a lot of promises, na after college papakasal kami. Umalis ako ng Pinas, and immigrate here sa Canada. Naka chat ko sya ulit after years na walang communication.

kami noon lagi kaming nag susumbatan dahil nasaktan kaming pareho noon. And mukhang we are falling in love again with each other.
First love namin ang isa’t-isa. Tamang nandyan parin. Tapos lagi namin pinag uusapan yung past, natutuwa kami, kasi after all those years, alala pa namin ang lahat. Pero may family na ako dito. Happy naman ako with my hubby kasi alam ko he loves me so much. He is a good husband, he is a good provider financially and emotionally.
Kahit hindi ako work sa ngayon kasi preggy ako, pero sya parin nag papadala ng pera back home for me. Miss A Dear Miss A, As you’ve said first love ka niya and first love mo din siya. Maybe that’s the reason why your feelings are still there. “First love never dies” ika nga. But that doesn’t mean you still love each other the way
You have just remembered the things you went through and shared when you’re together. Missing a person is far different from loving a person still. Why will you love someone else if you’re still in love with him? Nagbalik lang yung alaala but not the feelings. Alam ba ni first love mo na may asawa at buntis kana? Ipaalam mo at tignan mo magiging reaction nya.
Sabi mo you don’t want to give your baby a broken family. You made a vow with your husband and right now, committed kana. Dahil lang ba pinaalala ni ex ulit ang past nyo , do you think memories will bring the past into present? Sometimes love is so unfair but still we are given options what to choose and who to choose but still we should face the consequences out of it. May God enlighten you. Madame KC
Christmas is the perfect time to celebrate the love of God and family and to create memories that will last forever. Jesus is God’s perfect, indescribable gift. The amazing thing is that not only are we able to receive this gift, but we are able to share it with others on Christmas and every other day of the year. Black Friday, indeed! Romy Honorio
2016 and Beyond!

The parking lot was full. My wife and I walked roughly 100 meters to Sunridge Mall for Black Friday shopping. However, starvation directed us to the food court. Satisfied with our orders, we spoke to a woman (from Davao) across our table. Five plastic bags were neatly arranged beside her. It looked like her BF shopping was over. However, her face was marked with stress and exhaustion. Moments later two
policemen carried a “black eyed” teen out of the mall followed by her friends all in “black jackets”. After the commotion, two tables from us, three young people enjoyed their card game of “Black Jack”. Outside the night turned “pitch black”. Seconds later my wife left me at the food court and headed for the stores. Finally, we left the mall with just small plastic bag with one” black item” inside. As we headed
out I looked once again the crowd behind. If my estimate was right, over 95 percent of the people have “black hair”. As we drove off from the parking lot it occurred to me the great influence of consumerism’s “Black Knight”. I just hope Black Friday doesn’t bring “Mental Block” and “Black out” to our senses and rationality as we celebrate Yuletide.
A day after Cyber Monday (Nov. 30th), Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg, promised to give away 99% of their shares when they announced the birth of their daughter Max. The donation of $45bn at current value will go the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative to make the world a better place for their daughter to grow up in. (BBC 2015 news). As of July 2015 the world population is 7.349 billion. If Mark cashes out $45bn and promise all inhabitants to received just a million dollars each, I guess his goal of making the world a better place to live is doable. Who needs Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Boxing Day? Parents of Max, bless your heart! What a noble initiative. However, our present reality speaks of job loss (35,700 in November in Canada); massacre (San Bernardino and Paris); natural calamities (flood in India); sickness; human catastrophe
(refugee crises); environmental crisis (Earth warming); greed/ materialism (combined sales of 2015 Thanksgiving, Black Friday and Cyber Monday topped $7.45 Bn, more than 25% from last year); political correctness (intolerance of all kinds); moral/ relational breakdown (family break up); economic uncertainty; and man’s disregard to and ignorance of spiritual things. No amount of “Facebook Stocks”, “COP21 Climate Change in Paris”, “Sunny Ways”, “Election Promises”, “Carbon Tax”, “Gigabytes”, “Wi-Fi”, “Tweets”, “Instagram”, “LinkedIn”, “Google”, “Religion” and “Politics” could guarantee a world better than yesterday. Why? Because man’s needs and wants are insatiable (no end); no satisfaction, no contentment and misplaced security. We are all sinners! So what is the answer to all of 2016 concerns and uncertainties? Go back to the Manual of Life,
otherwise known as Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. For centuries the BIBLE had been tried, true and tested. The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good (Psalm 14:1). “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked; a man reaps what he sows. (Galatians 6:7). Finally, for 2016 and beyond, may we be reminded that “For God so loved the world (all of us) that he gave his one and only son (Jesus Christ) that whosoever believes (Faith) in him shall not perish (eternal death) but have eternal life (John 3:16). Jesus said “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10). Jesus said I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the father but through me. (John 14:6). Merry Christmas and Peaceful New Year to all!

The Main Ingredient wishing all our avid readers and followers with a very Merry Christmas and a welcoming a Bountiful New Year! As we embark the celebration of the birth of Christ, we Filiipinos, particularly Bulakenyos believe in good tidings, good luck and of course the belief that shaped our tradition and heritage. Although December is a concluding month of the year, welcoming a new year is equally important to celebrate. In the hometown of Bulacan where I grew up, the province is famous with an array of rice dishes “native kakanin” and sweets. It is used to be one of the major agricultural province, which hailed all sorts of dishes made from rice. Bulakenyos certainly made sure that
tables are filled with rice, sticky rice dishes and other sweet dishes. Rice dishes are staples, as they signify bountiful harvest and sweets are for good luck. The notion of serving rice or sticky rice dishes in the new year is believed to prolong blessings in the home For us, it is our hope towards abundant future, signifies prosperity and assures good fortune for the entire year. In this issue, we will feature r 4 different dishes, all made of rice with very close resemblance, however, they differ in the use of main or other ingredients. Therefore, one can be used as a one dish meal, and the other as a side dish or even a dessert. 1. Paella- most are aware that this dish originated from Spain, however, many people were so confused from where the name was derived. Paella mean “cooking or frying pan” and the main ingredient for this
recipe is the aromatic , delicate, flavourful and expensive saffron ”kasubha”. As the dish evolved in the Filipino kitchen, as well as for economical reasons, rice became the main ingredient and turmeric ”luyang dilaw” is being use for both colour and flavourings instead. Additionally, Seafood is the protein of choice 2. Arroz ala Valenciana- Is very similar to the paella dish, only varied in a few ingredients. Chicken and ham or chinese sausage are the main proteins of choice instead. 3. Biringhe ng Bulakan- is Luzon’s in particular Bulacan’s adaptation ( version) of Arroz Ala Velemciana with a sweet touch and very minimal ingredieints. 4. Kalamay Kanin/ Biko- made mainly of sweet sticky rice with coconut milk and mollases (panutsa).
