Alberta Premier Rachel Notley announced last June 25 that the current minimum wage will increase from $10.20 to $11.20 on October 1st. This will start the phased increases proposed by her government as she made it clear her intent to implement a $15 minimum wage by 2018. The separate wage for those who serve liquor will also rise from $9.20 to $10.70 but the differential will be eliminated altogether in 2016. At that time, Alberta will return to one minimum wage. continued on page 5

We have witness during the month of July various holidays and festivals foremost of it is the Canada Day last July 1. Canada Day has given Canadians from coast to coast a chance to pay tribute to the Canadian flag, celebrating with family and friends all that is great about Canada and recognize the privilege that comes with being Canadian. It is also the start of the numerous pre-election appearance of federal candidates running for the upcoming October election. In Calgary, the Canada Day was followed by Stampede Week dubbed as the Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. We have seen major figures in the upcoming federal election flipping pancakes as a show of solidarity to the people’s life. Canada is an open and egalitarian society. There are no obvious distinction between elites and average citizens. In this society, you make it through hard work and

turned Canada’s federal elections into national grovelling campaigns in which many politicians perform countless acts in order to get their share of the recent immigrant vote.” When I mentioned this quotes of tidbits in the conversation to a political analyst friend, he eloquently said; We would rather be ruined than changed, We would rather die in our dread Than climb the cross of the moment And let our illusions die. — W. H. Auden I asked what he meant and he has quite a marvelous take on all these comments. “Hearing those comments on immigration sounds like its racist and its anti-multicultural. But people has that natural habit. It is
called individualism. It’s a calm and considered feeling which disposes each citizen to isolate himself from the mass of his fellow and withdraw into the circle of family and friends, with this little society formed to his taste, he gladly leaves the greater society to look after itself.” He pointed out that the greater our tendency toward individualism, the weaker our communal fabric, the more vulnerable we are to despotic power. He agreed that there’s a need for a cost benefit analysis when it comes to immigration but he disagree on totally decreasing and eventually eliminating immigration policies that will allow others to come to Canada and be citizens. He believes that immigration might provide a counterbalance to Canadians individualism and help us avoid the danger of despotism. When I asked him how- he said because immigrants has a vigor for religious, civic, and other forms of organizational life. Immigrants constantly and eventually forms associations. In these associations, public opinions were shaped, social actions were mounted, and after a while policies formed were based. In this coming federal election, may the hard work of generations of people who came from all corners of the world to build the Canada we know and love today be taken into consideration. Individualism remains a strong theme among us, supporting original thought and action, even against the crowd. But multiculturalism and diversity will continue to be a major influence in our life offering us more prepolitical opportunities than the people of any nation have and thus give us more potential for political power. We remember a while ago, an important event that happened in the Philippine history on June 12, 1896. It is the birth of our Independence. It is timely and fitting that we commemorate the anniversary of Philippine independence. This is a proud moment where we can pay homage to our heroes who defied tyranny and fought hard to get our Independence from the colonizers. We also pay tribute to stewards of our democracy and reaffirm our commitment to safeguard this legacy. It is every Filipino obligation to honor and remember the historic event done by our heroes and defenders of democracy so that we will be motivated and inspired to do something for the love for our country. Let us have the strength and confidence of knowing that nobility and fortitude are running in our veins. We have to remain loyal to our heritage of solidarity and uphold the ideals of democracy. Wherever we are, like our adopted country Canada, we still have to keep on the Filipino legacy. We must be unified in our vision of a revitalized Philippines. The Philippine Independence defines us as one

KEEP ON THE FILIPINO LEGACY….. LOVE FOR DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM people so we have to bear the legacy with pride and honor as we give our important role in preserving democracy and freedom. Let us observe and be vigilant as the new wave of democracy is happening on in our country. In reality every country has the right to call for change and for reforms whenever the right to democracy is suppressed. As the years go by there is that aspirations of keeping on our freedom, of real democracy and morality in the government. Unfortunately, we are rapidly becoming a democracy now with influential and ambitious leaders who have been into immoral strategy just to stay wealthy and powerful. One of the pressing issues which the Philippine government should judiciously address is the social injustices and poverty that are still prevalent. Justice is a pillar of democracy. Once that pillar is weakened then, there is no democracy to talk about. Although Philippines is a constitutional republic a complacent citizenry has allowed ambitious
power-mad politicians to go into graft and corruption. There is a decline in national morality that leaks to moral, political, social and economic decay. National immorality flourishes when the heart and soul of a national citizen reject these principles. How could we then do away bribery and corruption? Unless the people will regain the determination and discipline, we will forfeit by our inaction the hard-won freedom we used to and in some small part we still enjoy. It seems more often than not the wrong people are elected and even when the right people are elected, they eventually do the wrong thing. Could it be that democracy in the Philippines isn’t working in the place that it should be? Let us put representative that will restore the stature we all can be proud of. That can only happen if we vote intelligently and not be influenced and controlled by money. Let’s also think about what to do to dynasty families who control vast economic power and are into third
or more generation. They are only concerned with wealth preservation and maintaining their power. Thus, the rich becomes richer and the poor getting poorer. Poverty is so prevalent. It is an illusion to say glory and hallelujah to the economic growth statis-
tics that are being bruited about when right in front of our very eyes there are still people without the amenities of good living. People are struggling and sleeping under flyovers and sewers. Unemployment made the Filipinos find other source of income. They have no choice
but to leave our country to support and feed their family. That is our greatest shame. We don’t want to allow this to get worse. This will continue to happen if nothing will be done by the government. It is the oligarchic struccontinued on page 4

KEEP ON THE FILIPINO LEGACY….. LOVE FOR DEMOCRACY AND FREEDOM ture and dysfunctional government that threaten the emergence of true democracy in the Philippines. Democracy means more than just freedom of expression, freedom of choice, freedom of election. It should mean the development of people’s life, too. The flaws in the democratic process in our country are extensive. There are elite dominance, government weaknesses and widespread abuse of public office. Concerns about the quality of democracy have become central to political discourse as seen in debates about constitutional reform and the hopes of good service. How is the state of democracy now in our country? Because of over-centralization, the electoral system and institutional structure faults it could be said that we may not have democracy at its hardest. Is democracy still observed in the Philippines? Yes even if some or more than a few think otherwise. The fact remains that the people are still free to exercise their right to vote, free to express their opinion. They are free to choose whom to vote for. The only problem is people do not wisely exercise these rights and elect officials who
are corrupt, but somehow they are exercising their right which is only possible under a democracy. Although not as perfectly as it should be. Truly the weakness of democracy lies within its people. Here now is the challenge to the next generation. Democracy is changing with the advancement of technology, popularity of Facebook and twitter and other forms of social media. A new wave of change is sweeping across the global landscape. It is imperative therefore for the next generation to understand the necessity of getting out and be aware of important issues and problems of the government. They should be actively involved and participate in nation building. The challenge is to assess the role of democracy to promote good citizenship, enhance stronger and corrupt free institutions and hold public servants accountable for their actions. Everybody must underscore the need for more active involvement of the citizenry. History has shown and taught us that we will not stand idly by, if democracy is threatened. It is likely that in such dire situation we will use our famous” people power” to restore democracy and institute reforms we needed. As
a legacy handed to us we should be reminded about the continuing Philippine revolution from 1896 up to now. Always on the lookout until such time the ultimate freedom, true democracy and morality in our government are on good caring hands. We should truly reflect long and hard about this legacy. The Philippine Independence is a significant milestone that captures the essence and resiliency and qualities of our countrymen. Let the nationalism and bravery of our ancestors and our heroes live forever. Let it be etched in our collective memory, to move on optimistically and for the betterment of our country and our people. Is the fighting spirit of our freedom defenders still alive in our hearts today? May we keep on the Filipino legacy love for democracy and freedom forever as long as we live. On a final note may I share Pope Francis powerful message, ”I ask you to ensure that humanity is served by wealth and not ruled by it.” This should be the goal of every leader with an interest in the long-term prosperity and sustainability of our global society and country. A glorious celebration of our Philippine Independence anniversary!

Alberta Minimum Wage Increases to $11.20 by October Alberta is currently one of 5 provinces with a differential. “We believe minimum wage should at least allow people to meet their basic needs,” said Lori Sigurdson, Minister of Jobs, Skills, Training and Labour. When the increase in minimum wage kicks in only Ontario ($11.25/ hour on October 1) and the Northwest Territories (currently at $12.50/ hour) will pay more to those who earn the least. Saskatchewan will then be the lowest, at $10.20/hour. Minister Sigurdson also added that the decision was as much about social policy as economics as she stressed, “Paying people a decent minimum wage will translate into a better life for low-income workers and, as a result a better life for families and for all Albertans.” Currently about 2 percent of Albertans make minimum wage or nearly 26,000 Albertans were working for the $10.20 minimum wage in 2014. Of those, nearly half were over 25 and just over half work full time. The majority are permanent employees (67 percent) and almost all are non-unionized (96 percent).Statistics Canada figures show 383, 900 Albertans work for
$15 per hour or less. Alberta already has the lowest unemployment rate and the smallest percentage of the workforce earning minimum wage. But critics say an increase in wages could lead to failed businesses if owners can no longer afford to pay staff. The prevailing theory suggests companies can respond to this by cutting back on employ employees or investing in more automation. The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned increasing wage could lead to the loss of 183,000 jobs in Alberta. The group believes young workers are at the highest risk of losing their jobs. ”In Canada, about five studies have found that for every 10 percent increases in minimum wage, there is a roughly three-to-six percent reduction in jobs for teens and young people.” “Alberta’s small businesses are struggling immensely in the current economic environment. We should ensure that these businesses are protected and able to weather these tough times needs to be a priority, and any new economic policies need to take their needs into account.” Public Interest Alberta
spokesman Bill Moore-Kilgannon said of the 143,000 children living below the poverty line, 60 percent have at least one parent working full time, full year. “Employers are paying people low wages and tax payers are subsidizing those employers, “ he said, pointing to the host of taxpayer-funded social programs that are used by low income Albertans ranging from child care subsidies to social housing to increased use of health care. Meanwhile on September 15, British Columbia’s minimum wage will increase 20 cents to $10.45/hour. On September 15 on each year, British Columbia’s minimum is adjusted annually relative to the consumer price index. The BC Federation of Labour though continues to campaign to increase the province’s minimum wage to $15/hour despite a government decision to increase rate based on inflation. Manitoba’s minimum wage will also increase in October 1 from $10.70/ hour to $11.00 per hour. Their security guard minimum wage is $10.95/ hour and it will increase to $11.75/hour in October 1 as well.

THE ROYAL TYRRELL MUSEUM’S HELLBOY NASA’s Successful Space Exploration relives controversy on Pluto’s planet status DF Ruel Sarmiento CONTRIBUTOR
The institution is generating a lot of buzz recently after unveiling their latest paleontological find. Not because they have found an entirely
new species of dinosaur, but because of its nickname. Meet Hellboy. The comic book reference is a suave move. It gets the people talking. But the moment you see those horns poking out above its eyes, you’ll get why they named it after
the well-mannered red demon. According to the museum’s paleonbiologist, Caleb Brown, the fossil earned its name because of the problems they encountered during excavation and the “hellish” condition at the quarry site.
THE MUSEUM About a month ago I had a chance to visit the Royal Tyrrell Museum. I must admit, I lived in Asia for the past 30 years and this is the closest to Jurassic Park or Jurassic World that I’ll ever get. The building sits in middle of nowhere in a town called Drumheller in Alberta. It somehow reminds me of an offsite S.H.I.E.L.D or Avengers facility rather than a museum. “The planning for a new Paleontological interpretive centre began with a search for a site, and
development of a master plan and program for a world class facility for not only the display of fossil finds, but for a working environment for Palaeontologists.” writes the Calgary-based architectural firm, BCW Architects, on their website. “Design for a museum involves consideration of layout for both efficient circulation and for the provision of an entertaining experience. The spaces must flow together logically, and provide for side trips for a fuller experience.” they added.
The museum is named after geologist, Joseph Tyrrell, who accidentally discovered the first reported dinosaur fossil in the Red Deer River valley in 1884. It was inaugurated on September 25, 1985 and received the “Royal” status in 1990. Noted for its collection of more than 130,000 fossils, the site does not only serve as a tourist attraction in Canada, but also as a center for paleontological research. The recent success of Nasa’s spacecraft New Horizons flyby past Pluto on July 13, 2015 and its first post-communication received the next day (July 14) is a historic space exploration that will hopefully answer if Pluto is indeed a planet or not. The probe’s historic early pictures of Pluto included a close-up of mountains over 3,000m high. Both the dwarf planet Pluto and its giant moon Charon appear to have surprisingly active geology. A bright, heart-shaped region on Pluto’s surface was named Tombaugh Regio after the planet’s discoverer US astronomer Clyde Tombaugh who discovered Pluto in 1930 while using the Lowell Observatory in Arizona. For more than 70 years, Pluto was one of nine planets recognised in our Solar System. But in 2006, it was relegated to the status of dwarf planet by the International Astronomical Union (IAU). So why was Pluto demoted? Where did the controversy start? After its discovery textbooks were swiftly updated to list this ninth member in the club. But over subsequent decades, astronomers began to wonder whether Pluto might simply be the first of a population of small, icy bodies beyond the orbit of Neptune. This region would become known as the Kuiper Belt, but it took until 1992 for the first “resident” to be discovered. The candidate Kuiper Belt Object (KBO) 1992 QBI was detected by David Jewitt and colleagues using the University of Hawaii’s 2.24m telescope at Mauna Kea. How did this change things? Confirmation of the first KBO invigorated the existing debate. And in 2000, the Hayden Planetarium in New York became a focus for controversy when it unveiled an ex-
hibit featuring only eight planets. The planetarium’s director Neil deGrasse Tyson would later become a vocal figure in public discussions of Pluto’s status. But it was discoveries of Kuiper Belt Objects with masses roughly comparable to Pluto, such as Quaoar (announced in 2002), Sedna (2003) and Eris (2005), that pushed the issue to a tipping point. Eris, in particular, appeared to be larger than Pluto - giving rise to its informal designation as the Solar System’s “tenth planet”. The discovery of other icy objects similar in size to Pluto forced a re-think by the IAU Prof Mike Brown of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), who led the team that found Eris, would later style himself as the “man who killed Pluto”. The finds spurred the International Astronomical Union to set up a committee tasked with defining just what constituted a planet, with the aim of putting a final draft proposal before members at the IAU’s 2006 General Assembly in Prague. Under a radical early plan, the number of planets would have increased from nine to 12, seeing Pluto and its moon Charon recognised as a twin planet, and Ceres and Eris granted entry to the exclusive club. But the idea met with opposition. What happened next? The discussions in Prague during August 2006 led to a new version of a planetary definition. On 24 August, the last day of the assembly, members voted to adopt a new resolution outlining criteria for naming a planet. A planet is a celestial body that (1) is in orbit around the Sun; (2) has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape; and (3) has cleared the neighborhood around
its orbit. Pluto met the first two of these criteria, but the last one proved pivotal. “Clearing the neighbourhood” means that the planet has either “vacuumed up” or ejected other large objects in its vicinity of space. In other words, it has achieved gravitational dominance. Because Pluto shares its orbital neighbourhood with other icy Kuiper Belt Objects, the resolution effectively stripped the distant world of a planetary designation it had held for some 76 years. It was immediately relegated it to the distinct category of “dwarf planet”, alongside the biggest body in the asteroid belt, Ceres, and other large Kuiper Belt Objects such as Eris, Quaoar and Sedna. Commenting at the time, the IAU’s president of planetary systems science Prof Iwan Williams said: “By the end of the decade, we would have had 100 planets, and I think people would have said ‘my goodness, what a mess they made back in 2006’.” Was that the end of the matter? In a word, no. Some experts immediately questioned the part of the definition about a planet clearing its orbital neighbourhood. This is because Earth shares its cosmic turf with more than 12,000 near-Earth asteroids. Thus, some have argued that Earth, Jupiter and other planets also fail to meet the IAU’s 2006 definition. Speaking just after the vote, Prof Alan Stern, chief scientist for the New Horizons mission of 2015, called the outcome “an awful decision” and described the new definition as “internally inconsistent”. The flyby of Pluto this year 2015 is unlikely to provide any information relevant to a change in Pluto’s status. But it will bring into clear focus once more what is, and what isn’t, meant by the term “planet”.

2. Compensation and benefits The economic downturn has changed the way HR approaches compensation and benefits. According to one recruitment agency, 2015 will be a year of realigning total rewards programmes to meet corporate objectives. Research from one recruitment agency suggests adjusting salary and rewards packages will be half the battle for HR professionals in the upcoming year. Finding creative and cost-effective ways of combining tangible and non-tangible rewards will also be a major challenge. Employers will benefit from paying particular attention to using compensation as a retention and motivational tool, or leveraging non-financial rewards to keep employ employees better engaged. One recruitment agency says HR departments will be exploring more effective ways of communicating
benefit plans that offer individual flexibility and build appreciation, trust and commitment. Not only will HR have to be more innovative in this key area in 2015; they will also have to take a more individualized approach to rewards and recognition schemes. Incentive programs should target all employees rather than just sales personnel who have traditionally been the focus of such initiatives. Out-of-the-box thinking will be crucial in 2015 as companies strive to choose rewards which are relevant and motivational. Organizations which make it a priority to build customized compensation and benefits programs are in good company. According to one survey, near-100 percent of Canadian companies believe providing employees with a choice in the benefits that they receive is crucial for responding to diverse workforce needs and values. Employers also acknowledged the importance of implementing employee choice programs in order to remain competitive in the marketplace. 1. Talent retention and development This issue makes it to the top of the HR challenges list for a number of reasons. While the global financial crisis helped to retain staff in 2014, employees will be

less cautious and more inclined to change jobs during the recovery. Likewise, competitors will once again able to afford to hire and poach. In particular, employees who were more closely scrutinizing remuneration and benefits, job security and career advancement prospects in other companies will gladly make the move as hiring freezes are lifted. Proactive HR strategies must be implemented now to retain employees. According to a report done by one recruitment agency, 22% of respondents expect that talent development will take precedence as HR’s first priority moving into 2015. Improvement of talent development strategies and delivery will be key to leveraging the available talent as effectively as possible, especially for success-critical positions. Mercer adds that developing high-potential talents for the future should also be high on HR’s agenda. Being one of the top executive talent challenges faced by companies in Canada and the North American Region, leadership development initiatives must be stepped up in order to avoid talent shortages at the most crucial levels. Employers should ensure future leaders are given access to future development and learning opportunities to accelerate their skills development. They must also gain a better understanding of the skills, competencies and behaviors that will be required of leaders in their organizational culture, and assess the gap between these needs and existing talents. HR’s priorities There’s no doubt it’s

MP Shory: Canada concludes negotiations on the CanadaUkraine Free Trade Agreement July 14, 2015 Calgary – Devinder Shory, Member of Parliament for Calgary Northeast and a long-standing member of the House of Commons International Trade Committee, expressed his satisfaction on the news that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has concluded negotiations on the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement. “Concluding the negotiations for the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement is another positive step taken by our Conservative Government to increase access to overseas markets for Canadian businesses to sell their products and services, which will help create jobs
for Canadians,” said MP Shory. “Since 2006, our government has concluded free trade agreements with 39 countries, bringing the total to 44. Because of our government’s focus on free trade and opening markets for Canadian businesses, Canadian exporters will soon benefit from preferential access to more than half of the global marketplace. This is great news for the continued long-term growth of the Canadian economy.” “I concur with our Prime Minister, Stephen Harper,
when he said that ‘we remain committed to creating the best conditions for Canadian companies to succeed abroad, as well as to ensure jobs and opportunities across our country,” concluded Shory. A new cancer centre will be built at the Foothills Medical Centre campus. This was revealed recently by Sarah Hoff Hoffman, Minister of Health. “Cancer patients, their families and their caregivers deserve certainty that this government is committed to the Calgary Cancer Centre. We want them to know that we are there for them and that we are moving forward with the Foothills Medical Centre site. With cancer rates expected to rise in Alberta by as much as 60 per cent in the next 15 years, this new centre will be integral to meeting cancer care needs in our
province.” The government has identified two potential sites on the Foothills Medical Centre campus for the Calgary cancer facility. More analysis, including geotechnical testing, is required to make a final decision. New and expanded services at the centre will include: additional inpatient beds; outpatient services; radiation therapy; and systemic therapy (e.g., chemotherapy). This news was gladly welcomed by Myka Osinchuk, CEO of Alberta Cancer Foundatuion. “The Alberta Cancer Foundation has been a strong advocate for a new cancer centre in Calgary. We are looking forward to being partners with the government as they move forward with
the Foothills site and working with them to make life better for Albertans facing cancer.” Project planning is underway and further details, including a timeline and detailed project budget, will be released in the fall. Every day, 43 Albertans learn they have cancer. By 2030, that number is expected to go up to more than 70 new cases a day.

117 Philippine Independence Day Celebration: Respect and Sensitivity Romy Honorio CONTRIBUTOR
Firstly, commendation and congratulations are due to the organizers (Council and Assembly of Filipino Foundations and Associations - CAFFA and Philippine Independence Organizing Committee - PIOC) and participants of the Philippine 117 Independence Day Celebration held at TNT along 36th St. N.E. on June 13. The sound of drums and people’s jubilation in the parade were loud, beginning at 10 am sharp. They walked confidently with pride and their heads facing upward and onward. From the gathering point, west of 36th street, the parade snaked down to the back entrance of the mall. In less than 10 minutes the food court was cramped with people. “Ang Galing Mo Pinoy” was the theme of the celebration. Fittingly, a Minister graced the occasion, followed by greetings from “Political friends of Filipinos” (mentioned from time to time on the stage). Two PC MLAs greeted the crowd. The first one’s three minutes of goodwill and greeting was very appropriate. However, the last one spent most of his time blabbering about his party’s role in the legislature. Another invited “political friend”, a representative from the ruling party (NDP) conveyed a positive message from the government. Surprisingly, there was no scent of “Wild
Rose” (Official Opposition) in the midst of the gathering. The message from the Prime Minister was played out on the screen. The presence of Calgary’s mayor inspired many in the crowd with his greetings and leadership aura. Both presidents of PIOOC and CAFFA shared with enthusiasm and vigor, “It has been sought for a long time for this kind of unity,” said the CAFFA president. The dream to hold a united Independence Day celebration finally materialized. “Mabuhay Tayong Filipino,” was the gist of PIOOC president’s message. Undoubtedly, Filipino festivities or celebrations are made complete with dances, songs and other forms of entertainment. A number of young (and older) Filipina-Calgarians showcased their beauty and talents before the cheering crowd of roughly 400 people. Filipino chefs exhibited their skills, craftsmanship and masterpieces. Day 2 of celebrations was also spectacular. Games and draw prizes were given away such as a trip to Las Vegas! Three important insights stood out from the event. First, the organizers treated time with utmost respect. Hat’s off to their strict observance of hour, minutes and seconds. Secondly, of the 20+ registered Pinoy associations and groups in Calgary only a handful of them participated in the parade. Though individual groups were represented by CAFFA, each group’s presence would have
been the manifestation of true Filipino Calgarian Unity. Thirdly; the planned Filipino Festival in September (announced during the celebration) should be free from political opportunism. Our community needs to be respected. True “friends” treat our celebrations with respect and sensitivity, being aware that there are other times and places for political posturing. For freedom and independence, we celebrate!

for funds. When people participate, each step they take symbolizes solidarity and support with those who have less in life and living in extreme poverty. Partners and supporters of ANCOP greatly anticipate the largest gathering of Filipino Canadians in Canada to support the work for the poor, the ANCOP Walk. Done yearly in August, ANCOP Walk is ANCOP’s major global fundraising event that draws people together across the globe to walk for a great cause – to send poor children to school and to build houses for families without one. It was an innovative way to raise funds and make ANCOP known to people at the same time providing families, friends, and colleagues bonding and physical fitness activity. This year various countries all over the world will participate in the Walk including the Philip-
pines, Canada, USA, Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Singapore, Kuwait, Qatar, Bermuda, Africa and other countries in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This is aimed at intensifying public awareness of ANCOP’s shelter and child sponsorship program and to stir people to help in expanding the work. Every single step during the Walk is a symbolic step towards setting the poor free from poverty. ANCOP Walk 2015 kicks off August 16th in the Philippines where over 120,000 people are expected to participate in Manila and in various cities and provinces throughout the country. In Canada, the Walk is formally launched in various cities in the country before the actual event in August to make it public and to rally people to participate. ANCOP Toronto initiated the
launch on April 26th with a short program and presentations at the Rogers Theatre of the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, Ontario. Through the initiative of then main guest Filipino-Canadian Senator Tobias (Jun) Enverga who has always been a strong supporter of ANCOP, the senator’s colleagues in Parliament Hill took time to participate. During the first week of June, we received a notice in the mail. The City of Calgary Vehicle Impound notified me to pick up my stolen clunker (1999 Caravan) recovered by the police. The zero-value-van was intended for scrapping after June 16th. Adding salt to the injury was the hefty fee I had to pay for towing and safekeeping. We were relieved and comforted when the towing truck unhinged the van in front of my house very late that night. For us it was like a giant USB or memory stick back to service. Embedded in it were pleasant and sad memories of our driving experiences. From family-use to mobility-for-newly-arrived-friends, the vehicle brought people’s relationships closer and meaningful. Its utility and usefulness were incredible. “Pogiit” (the van’s name) was our very loyal and reliable companion. During camping season we had an instant one-star sleeping quarter. He endured all kinds of weather conditions in the prairie. Pogiit was privy to my family’s secrets, intimate and inspired conversations and gossips. Pogiit was not spared from an accident. He underwent two nose-lifts and Botox treatments in a

It took my specialist one day to install a new ligament (engine belt). His pamper (oil seal) was new. Years ago the salesperson said, “If you take care of this van it will take care of you for the long haul”. Pogiit played a
big role in our survival in Calgary. He was neither a source nor reason for personal prestige, pride and status, but something that simply stood by us with humility. His service and presence suited our needs. His service to my family made us cherish and miss him even more. The next morning I checked him out. His con-
dition was pitiful. He was badly damaged. Three new doors and the ignition key were in need of replacement. His internal organ (engine), though, was the main reason for retrieving him. No high blood, no leakage, sugar and cholesterol levels were good and arthritis-free. He was in nearly perfect running condition.
I tried to make sense of the situation and came up with an insightful reality. The thief forgot a decent pair of shoes and black shirt in Pogiit’s lap. Our sadness for Pogiit’s condition was traded off with pity for the individual who took him by force. We have the possibility and opportunity to replace Pogiit but for the
person, the shoes and shirt could have possibly been his only precious possessions. Thinking on this, we forgive the individual and hope and wish him goodwill. Interestingly, the thief and I share the same shoe size. Aha!

Brakes may be broadly described as using friction, pumping, or electromagnetics. One brake may use several principles: for example, a pump may pass fluid through an orifice to create friction: Frictional brakes are most common and can be divided broadly into “shoe” or “pad” brakes, using an explicit wear surface, and hydrodynamic brakes, such as parachutes, which use friction in a working fluid and do not explicitly wear. Typically the term “friction brake” is used to mean pad/shoe brakes and excludes hydrodynamic brakes, even though hydrodynamic brakes use friction. Friction (pad/shoe) brakes are often rotating devices with a stationary pad and a rotating wear surface. Common configurations include shoes that contract to rub on the outside of a rotating drum, such as a band brake; a rotating drum with shoes that expand to rub the inside of a drum, commonly called a “drum brake”, although other drum configurations are possible; and pads that pinch a rotating disc, commonly called a “disc brake”.

brakes to heat up and lead to rapid deterioration of your brake pads. You are better off applying short spurts of pressure on your brakes and gradually slowing down your car, being mindful enough of your speed to take your foot of the accelerator earlier can add months to the life span of your brakes.
Regular brake inspection This is most people try to ignore. Having your brakes inspected regularly will make it easier to notice if you are having some sort of issue start to develop. Your brakes can tell you a lot about the rest of your car, such as the state of your wheel alignment, so make sure you get your mechanic to have a look at your brakes on a regular basis. Flush the brake fluid Brake fluid is an alcohol-based fluid that helps to keep your brake systems lubricated and working smoothly and effectively. Being alcohol-based, brake fluid absorbs ma-
terials and contaminants from the air, and as the metal components erode, it absorbs them too, which can be rough on your brakes. Flushing out your brake fluid regularly can help prevent your brake system components from suffering premature wear, helping to extend the overall life of your brakes. Talk to your mechanic about flushing out your brakes next time you get your car service done. A good car can last you almost forever, but helping your car stay in great shape requires care, especially when it comes to your brakes. The real highlight of your car should be its comfort and reliability, not how fast it goes, so keep your vehicle’s speed under control if you want your brakes to last. Doing burnouts and high speed driving around in your car can greatly reduce the overall lifespan of your car, and especially the brakes, so look out for your car, and you’ll get twice as much out of your car maintenance budget. source: Monitor
BRAKES Other brake configurations are used, but less often. For example, PCC trolley brakes include a flat shoe which is clamped to the rail with an electromagnet; the Murphy brake pinches a rotating drum, and the Ausco Lambert disc brake uses a hollow disc (two parallel discs with a structural bridge) with shoes that sit between the disc surfaces and expand laterally. A drum brake is a vehicle brake in which the friction is caused by a set of brake shoes that press against the inner surface of a rotating drum. The drum is connected to the rotating roadwheel hub. The disc brake is a device for slowing or stopping the rotation of a road wheel. A brake disc (or rotor in U.S. English), usually made of cast iron or ceramic, is connected to the wheel or the axle. To stop the wheel, friction material in the form of brake pads (mounted in a device called a brake caliper) is forced mechanically, hydraulically, pneumatically or electromagnetically against both sides of the disc. Friction causes the disc and attached wheel to slow or stop.

The day-off factor Unforgettable Memories
Fr. Edmund Vargas WRITER
A priest on his dayoff was heading out of the parish office when a lady blocked to request for his advice. The priest politely explained that it was his day-off. The lady countered: “But the devil does not take a day-off ?” The priest answered back: “If I don’t take a day-off, there would be another devil here.” The reason for annual retreats, study days and other vacations for priests is to avoid the emergence of other devils in our parishes. The gospel relates about the return of the apostles from their missionary tour, which proved to be hectic. In the words of the evangelist, “they had no leisure even to eat.” Jesus invited them to “come away to a deserted place all by themselves and rest a while.” In the mind of Jesus, to rest is essential.
To renew our apostolic zeal requires that we go away to some deserted place by ourselves and rest a while. Our local paper once featured an article entitled “If it’s Friday, it must be a day off.” It says about the oil patch firms, during this boom time in Calgary, increasing perks by giving employees two Fridays off a month. This means two long weekends a month, that is, 24 days off a year that come on top of vacation time and statutory holidays. The new spin on TGIF may be a low-cost way to generate a great amount of goodwill and loyalty, but it is also a recognition of the need to take time off, relax, rest and renew. It is important for all of us living in this fast-growing city to realize the need for rest, sleep, day-offs, vacations and holidays.
“Stress”, as we know it, results from the deprivation of rest. What is commonly referred to as a “burnt-out” phenomenon is usually the result of too much work, to much preoccupation with life’s pressures and problems. The concept of Sabbath as does not only include the element of rest but also of restoration and renewal. As we observe the Sabbath, which is Sunday for us, we remind ourselves of who we really are, of our purpose in life and our origin and ultimate destiny. Our Sunday observance reminds us of God’s jurisdiction over our lives. It is giving back to God what He has given to us. Religion, as we know it, is an act of justice, that is, giving back to God what He deserves.

Life does some very hard and painful memories, but is has also wonderful and joyful moments, the joy of life will outweigh the pain. Open your eyes, hear the songs of the birds that variety of human voices, the drum, the guitar, and the horns of the music. Suffering is something that is part of our lives on earth, but it will not be a part of our everlasting life. Memories give us strength, the experiences that we have encountered. Memories give a color in our lives. As well as the people that surrounds us, and life becomes very meaningful. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, And do not rely on your insight In your own ways acknowledge Him And he will make straight path” So much memories you can’t forget, especially the first anniversary of your wedding or engagement. That make you feel happy and sometimes lonely. Suddenly tears come out of your eyes, comforting yourself alone, looking at those pictures, hugging, kissing, and whispering the words “How do I love thee.” A confession of a lady was terrifying, she was afraid of what tomorrow will bring by, she broke up with her boyfriend and she doesn’t want to go back to him because of the experiences of what had happened to them. Although she did no good to her boyfriend she was accepted with two arms

Don’t cry over the past, it’s gone. Don’t stress about the future, it hasn’t arrived. Live in the present and make it beautiful. Dear Madame KC, For a little background: I have been currently dating a Filipina for around half a year. We are both in our early 20s. This Filipina has 2 sons aged 3 and 4 already. No one is supporting her besides herself. I am a Chinese who works at our own family business. My family will never accept me to marry a Filipina because they believe that a Chinese should be married to a Chinese Family. Neither will they allow me to marry someone who has kids because it too will “BRING SHAME TO THE FAMILY” or so they say. I have lived a rich per person’s lifestyle where I can get anything I want. Passive income alone from
my inheritance, I can survive months with me doing nothing. Though my parents allow me to buy whatever I want, it should go through them first. So these so called “passive income” is something I can’t really use. Still, it is a very good lifestyle, I have every every-thing I need. The question is this: Should I choose to leave this lifestyle and live with my girl or what? For the record, I am someone who do not desire much. I do not desire expensive cars, clothes, phones or any any-thing. Traveling is also not a priority of mine. My heart is telling me to choose the girl, but I am really scared that I won’t be successful in life. I might try to apply for a job, and try to start a
business on my own. But my lack of experience and knowledge definitely scares me like crap. Please, I just need some advice. Thank you very much. Lee Jay
Dear Jay, We really can’t tell you what to choose or who to choose. But I would like you to realize this, what you do today determines your future. Obviously, either way you know the consequences down the road. Whoever you choose, by the end of the day, blame nobody but yourself because it was you who responded to the situation. It was your call and nobody else’s. What do you think could
drive your decision? It is your will. Only if you have the will, you can overcome the situation. And as you overcome, you will be able to find the answers to your dilemma. Try to ponder on these: Why did you choose this one which has a ton of baggage? Might it be a way of you “rebelling” from your family? Or is it a way to force yourself to become more “independent”? Don’t rush to settle down just because you’re in your 20’s, enjoy life while you can. You should live your life to the fullest because you’re only young once.

Calgary Huskies snatch Briones Cup Basketball Championship 2015 Cheryl Posadas-Guinsatao EDITOR IN-CHIEF
It was a scampering, spinning, diving, sometimes airborne affair- this basketball championship match between Calgary Huskies and Velocity vying for Briones Cup last June 28 at Midsun Community Center 50 Midpark Rise SE under the management of Filipino Community Basketball League (FCBL). Calgary Huskies who scored thru their 3-points and free throw baskets came back from a 14 points disadvantage to surge up and tie the game in the third quarter 64-64. At the fourth quarter, back and forth it went. Both teams kept pushing and
hitting and driving to the hoop. Still Calgary Huskies fine 3 point shooting touch helped to seal their victory with a final score of 89-85. Major Sponsor Alex Briones said, “I was very happy not only in the championship game but throughout the season. All participating teams showed their skills and sportsmanship. It’s really a friendly, exciting and fun basketball game for this summer. We could not have done it without the organizers of FCBL and the other sponsors like Tatak Pinoy and Jade Headshop.” The FCBL 5-man organizing team were Abi Damian, Scion Dabuet, Mel Lopes, Marco Alcantara and Zaldy Parales. Calgary Huskies as a grand finals champion received
$1,000, a trophy, individual medals for their 12 players, and the privilege to bring home the Briones Cup where their team and their players’ names were engraved. Members of the Calgary Huskies are Julius Macaspac, Nikko Macaspac, Carlo Galang, Jim Pineda, Tom Roxas, Iyrell Pascual, Lorenzo Gayos, Paolo Juego, Mark Reyes, Michael Flancia, Chino Unarce, and Jayson de Castro. Nikko Macaspac who scored 18 points in the game won the Championship Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award and received a trophy and $50. While Jim Pineda who has shown sportsmanship throughout the season accepted the FCBL Basketball Season MVP Award trophy and $150. FCBL
also awarded a trophy to Julius Macaspac and Carlo Galang as Coaches of the Year. Velocity who won the 1st runner up received a trophy and $500 while 2nd runner up Clean Pro took home a trophy and $300. When interviewed, Calgary Huskies Julius Macaspac said, “Ang sarap ng pakiramdam- coming from behind and winning the game. Wow! It’s really a team effort and we did not give up kahit nag-14 points pa ang lamang.” Calgary Huskies was composed of mostly friends who enjoy playing basketball so after a week, a victory BBQ celebration in Panorama was held. Macaspac also revealed that they are planning to join the league again to defend the title and enjoy the
friendly competition. They will also look for sponsorship, which they would be very happy to represent during the next season. “Hopefully we can get a sponsor before the season starts on February next year. For those who want to sponsor us, they can send a private message to my Facebook account or email me at juliusmacaspac9@gmail.com.” Asked about future plans, major sponsor Alex Briones reiterates his invitation to other basketball teams that “Filipino Community Basketball League (FCBL) season will be held annually and is open to all teams with Filipino heritage; it’s for all ages between 16-60 years old, and with a participating fee of $1,200. The fee is mostly used to cover facili-
ty rentals, officiating referees’ honorarium and other expenses. For next year season, they will open the slot to 12 teams and will start it by February 2016.” The 10 teams who participated this season were Calgary Huskies, Velocity, CleanPro, Wildcard, Black Gold, Brgy.SW, WillowPark, Greatway, JR 12 and Soul Rebels. Briones also invited everyone in the upcoming 2nd Filipino-Canadian Inter-City Invitational Basketball Tournament that will be held here in Calgary on September 6-7 at Rundle College gymnasium 7375 17 Avenue SW where he is one of the sponsor invited by tournament coordinator Benjie Arias.
