Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) has announced that amendments have been made to regulations regarding spousal, common-law, and conjugal partner sponsorship for Canadian immigration as well as application and acquisition of Canadian Citizenship. The changes came into force on June 10 and 11, 2015. They apply only to applications received on or after this date, whereas applications received prior to this date will be processed under the previous regulations.
, 2001, 2002 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
Some of the changes in Citizenship Act focused on the requirements for application. The applicants need to have stayed 4 years (1,460 days) out of the 6 years requirement before the date of application. They are also required to have 183 days minimum of physical presence in Canada during each of the four calendar years. The non-permanent resident time is not included in the counting for your time spent in Canada and you need to provide “an intent to reside”. Legislation also now requires applicants aged 14–64 to meet language requirements and pass knowledge test. “Lost Canadian” born before 1947 as well as their first generation children born abroad are now allowed to apply for citizenship. It also creates a fast-track mechanism for citizenship for individuals serving or on exchange with the Canadian Armed Forces to honour their service to Canada. The legislation also defines who is authorized to provide representation or advice in a consultant
capacity on citizenship matters and receive consideration (i.e. compensation). To avoid abuse or fraud, the new Citizenship Act stressed that CIC minister have the authority to refuse an application for recognized status as a consultant if applicant commits fraud. Fines and penalties for fraud are up to a maximum $100,000 and/or up to five years in prison. New offences and penalties will be implemented for a person who counsels known misrepresentation or represents or advises a citizenship applicant and are unau-
thorized to do so. The new Citizenship Act gives Minister of Citizenship and Immigration authority to (1) decide on most revocation cases such as war crimes, crimes against humanity, security, other human or international rights violations, and organized criminality decided by the Federal Court (2) authority to revoke Canadian citizenship from dual citizens who served as members of an armed force of a country or an organized armed group engaged in armed conflict with Canada (3) continued on page 5

Recessions are always harder on young workers, but we are nearly five years out from the end of the last recession and there is still no recovery in sight for this important demographic. Graduates of Class 2015 this spring is expected to be facing gloomy job prospects. Because of this, I find myself reading and talking to others about this very topic. It’s true that Canada’s youth are facing financial challenges and tough choices previous generations did not face. Unlike their parent’s generation, finding a good job today is more and more dependent upon obtaining a post-secondary education yet accessing it is more and more difficult. Upon graduation, students are saddled with debilitating debt load only to be greeted by a job market characterized by precarious work, unpaid internships and underemployment. The provincial government recently predicts that by 2020, approximately 35 percent of all new job openings will

require university-level education and 42 percent will require college or trades certificates. The risk of taking on significant levels of debt at a young age with few assets is often justified as a self-investment necessary to secure future employment and income. However, young Canadians are entering a workforce far different than that of previous generations. Increasing occurences of precarious work, largely stagnant wages and fewer (if any) benefits can turn education related debt into a life-impacting burden. Despite claims that Canada weathered the recession better than many countries, its youth unemployment rate still remains double the overall unemployment rate. Based on Statistics Canada in 2008, prior to the recession, youth unemployment was 11 percent. It peaked in 2009 at 16.4 percent and although it has decreased it still remains high at 13.4 percent as of June 2014. If
part-time employees seeking full-time jobs, unpaid interns, and discouraged young Canadians are taken into account, the youth un/underemployment rate rises to 27.7 percent. Young Canadians (15-24) were hit especially hard in the last recession. Young workers accounted for more than half of all net job losses during the recession, despite making up only 16.5 percent of the workforce. High level of youth unemployment has already resulted in $10.7 billion in lost wages to young Canadians. Furthermore, over the next 18 years, it is believed this wage scarring will lead to an additional loss of $12.4 billion. And when the rates of recent graduates working outside of their educational background are taken into account, the effects of underemployment and wage scarring become more pronounced. Many recent graduates who are unable to secure adequate income in their field are forced to accept any job to avoid missing
loan payments, including positions for which they are overqualified and that may actually be a barrier to eventually find work in their field as their newly acquired knowledge and skills start to degrade. Also, remember when Bank of Canada governor Stephen Poloz tells young people that they should work for free? That statement gets the ire of the youth. There are 2 obvious problems with encouraging free work as a policy. One is that the smartest poor kid cannot afford to work for free. The other is that a supply of free workers completely destroys the motivation for employers to actually hire young people and pay them. That can make the youth unemployment problem even worse. To fully grasp the extent of the youth job market trends, I also tried to get the sides of the employers. After the mass exodus of temporary foreign workers last April 1, the expected increase on job openings on transitional and entry level jobs were affected by the economic downturn resulting to layoffs in almost all industry and closure of small businesses. It’s found out that most employers want people with degrees in engineering, science, math and health care. Most employers as well want to see young applicants have work experience- paid or unpaid. “We want to see young people who can relate and interact effectively. We want to see young people who are critical thinkers. We want young people who can deliver and show the skills and qualifications they have put in their resume.” I also asked the perspective of older and experience workers, “Young people tend to think that when they graduatethat certificate is like a golden ticket to a bright future. But the promise of
postsecondary education leading to high earnings is not always the reality. Soft skills just maybe the new hard skills when it comes to getting a job at this time.” Truly, today’s jobless numbers remind us, youth employment is a crucial issue and it’s not just for youth. It is the economic issue of our times. It is no secret that the record high student debt and high youth unemployment mean we face a difficult future. Still, I believe that change is possible but our nation’s leaders must hear from the youth. Without youth participation in what’s happening in the economy and in their community, our democracy stops working. I still believed that by getting involved together with the other sectors of society, we can ensure a better future. Like what Robert Kennedy said, “Some believe there is nothing one man or one woman can do against the enormous array of the world’s ills -- against misery, against ignorance, or injustice and violence. Yet many of the world’s great movements, of thought and action, have flowed from the work of a single man. A young monk began the Protestant reformation, a young general extended an empire from Macedonia to the borders of the earth, and a young woman reclaimed the territory of France. It was a young Italian explorer who discovered the New World, and 32 year old Thomas Jefferson who proclaimed that all men are created equal. ‘Give me a place to stand,’ said Archimedes, ‘and I will move the world.’ These men moved the world, and so can we all.” With the economic downturn, we are all living on edge on what the future will bring. Still to the graduates of

Santa Aquino-Posadas CONTRIBUTOR
The friendship of these two amazing women is beyond compared. Nowadays, very rare could we find such a wonderful kind of relationship they shared together amidst their respective lives. These two are my sister-in-law, Yollie and the renowned Dr. Vickie Belo, the famous cosmetic beauty surgeon and consultant. Their friendship has been an open book to both families and friends. A relationship that demonstrates a unique kind of love, honesty, truth, and respect between an employer and an employee. An amazing tale of friendship they have for each other, from the very start until the last journey of Yollie’s life on earth. We are the living witness of their friendship, the Aquino family and the Belo Medical Group family. It was the early 70’s when Yollie and Dr. Vickie Belo met each other through Yollie’s boss, James Cooper, a famous beauty consultant. Yollie worked with him as his beauty hairdresser and make-up artist in one of James Cooper’s beauty parlours and clinic in Manila, Quezon City suburbs. It was the personality and character of Yollie that she was trusted and relied on in the performance of her services and skills

A lasting friendship consists of love, honesty, truth, and respect. for many years. It was also seen and observed by Dr. Belo whenever she visited James Cooper, that she offered Yollie to be a part of the Belo Medical Group at Makati main office. Being loyal to her boss, Yollie sought advice and asked permission from him. As an understandable employer, he willingly let go of Yollie and entrusted her to Dr Vickie Belo. A very kind and concerned boss, he gave his blessings with the kind thought that it will be for her own progress and future. From that time on, thus began the friendly relationship of Yollie and Dr. Belo. As the business boomed and expanded, Yollie worked devotedly and faithfully did her very best. Love for her work, dealing nicely and fairly with customers and dedication in the performance of her job, Dr. Belo notably noticed and appreciated it very much. As the years went by, they become closer and confident to one another that Dr. Belo tagged her along in her business tour here and abroad as her personal hairdresser and make-up artist. Dr. Vickie Belo is a very caring, generous,
thoughtful, concerned, and compassionate person. She can feel and see in her instinct if you are sincere and genuinely trustful. She is very kind and understanding, the many admirable traits she possesses that she is loved and respected by her employees. Dr. Belo extends beyond her own way to give help and assistance even when she is in the Philippines and abroad and everywhere else. Her sincerity and generosity were very much appreciated by all. Every employee every customer, even her own “kasambahay” can attest and testify about her amazing traits. She is an inspiration and a blessing to others sharing with others her own blessings and graces. Since the time Yollie was stricken of cancer in the pancreas, Dr. Belo was always at her side, comforting and assisting in her every need. Yollie calls Dr. Belo, “my Angel” for being her friend, a sister, a guardian, and a shoulder to cry on her problems, fears and worries in life. As Yollie journeys on to her last days on earth, from the hospital to her house, Dr. Belo kept on to
be the caring and concerned friend supporting and providing her needs even bringing her to the private healing service of Fr. Faraon in her residence. She continuously monitoring, visiting her, checking on her needed medication and medical equipment. Dr. Belo really contributed much in every expense incurred in her hospitalization in every aspect of her life. She even sent her own personal comptroller to manage her financial needs and expenses, providing nurses and doctors to monitor her health condition especially when she was already confined in her own bedroom at her house. The Belo Medical Group staff, her former boss, James Cooper, friends, families, and relatives alternately come and visit her. They did all their own way to make Yollie’s final stage of her journey, something beautiful to remain unto her mind and heart. They let her feel that she is well-loved. They brought food, shared happy stories that even one of Dr. Belo’s surgeons held her own birthday party at Yollie’s house. My
brother Jesus (Jessie) feeling thankful for the all-out support of love, kindness, and services they all have given to Yollie and her family. What an incredible support and loving gesture of a truly deeds of kindness! The last time Dr. Belo visited Yollie was when she has to leave her for a business trip to the USA, she took time off to see Yollie. The moment she sat besides Yollie, she can feel and know that it will be her last to see Yollie alive. She was too weak to speak up, just blankly looked at her and even tried to raise her hand as if saying, “The journey is over, I have to give my very thanks for everything you have shared.” With her hand and much effort she raised it and bid goodbye to her true friend, true Angel with tears on her eyes. September 14 at 3:00pm, surrounded by her family, loved-ones, and friends in the absence of Dr. Belo, she took her last breath. Dr. Belo felt so sad for the lost of a loyal, faithful, and trusted friend in Yollie. But the friendship they have shared will forever be treasured in her heart in one of her loving
tributes. From the first to the last day wake for Yollie was in full attendance of family, relatives, and friends especially from the Belo Medical Group branches. The very lasting legacy of Yollie left for her family and friends is her own diary/journal and personal goodbye letter to her husband and sons where she wrote it in her sick-bed during those moments she was alone and suffering. For Dr. Belo, our grateful heart for her loving kindness and generosity she brought to Yollie and her family and to the Aquino family. What a great blessing she shared. All the way, she is a living inspiration for everybody with a human touch of love and service to others. The real demonstration of true love and friendship coupled with faithfulness, loyalty, and trust. Dr. Vickie Belo. . . You are one of a kind, may your tribe increases. God bless. To our dear Yollie, you will be remembered for the legacy you left behind to your family, loved ones, and friends.

Canada Announces Changes on Sponsorship, Citizenship still dependent on their parents: rather than being considered a spouse, these individuals will be considered dependent children and/or de facto family members and can be sponsored as such. (2) Spouses and common-law partners under 18 who are in refugee camps: these individuals can be considered de facto dependents, or may be considered on humanitarian and compassionate grounds. Officers will assess these applicants on a case-by-case basis, offering flexibility and sensitivity to vulnerable applicants. The second amendment makes proxy, telephone, fax, internet, or similar marriages inadequate for spousal sponsorship. A proxy marriage is one in which either one or both individuals are not physically present at the marriage ceremony. In a proxy marriage, the absent individual(s) must be represented by another person. Telephone, fax, and internet marriages are similar to proxy marriages in that one or both parties are not physically present at the marriage ceremony. In these types of marriages, however, the absent individual(s) participates in the ceremony by telephone, fax, internet, Skype, FaceTime, or a similar form of communication. This new regulation calls these forms of marriage “excluded relationships”, making them insufficient for spousal or common-law partner sponsorship Again, there are exceptions to this amendment: (1)Members of the Canadian Armed Forces: if an individual was not

physically present during the marriage ceremony because of travel due to his or her service in the Canadian Armed Forces, the marriage may still be considered valid. (2) Common-law partners: if the marriage is considered an “excluded relationship” but the individual qualifies as a common-law partner, the application will continue to be processed under the relationship status category of common-law partner rather than spouse.(3)Humanitarian and compassionate considerations: in certain cases, if an individual’s safety and/or wellbeing is at risk, officers will be sensitive and flexible with the new regulations. The third and final amendment was made to the five-year sponsorship bar for persons who were previously sponsored to come to Canada as a spouse or common-law partner. The modification reads as follows: “A sponsor who became a permanent resident or a Canadian Citizen after being sponsored as a spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner […] may not sponsor a foreign national […] as a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, unless the sponsor has been a permanent resident, or a Canadian Citizen, or a combination of the two, for a period of at least five years immediately preceding the day on which a sponsorship application […] is filed by the sponsor in respect of the foreign national.” For more information visit www.cic.gc.ca.

Hello The Main Ingredient readers, as we continue to showcase what makes Filipino cuisines and culture quite unique, lets take another icon, the Kutsara at Tinidor Restaurant (Fork and Spoon). They are the common and traditional utensils of choice during the meal among Filipino dining tables in every parts of of the world - yes not fork and knife or chopsticks. Even in the days, household wall decors in the dining area comprised of the last supper sandwiched by giant wooden spoon and fork. For this summer issue, The Main is so privileged to introduce a restaurant that is close to Diaryo Filipino’s heart with their iconic restaurant named - Kutsara at Tinidor! A prophetic vision from a Leader at the Christian Church where Dories and her family attended was the source of inspiration of the business. As Dories recalled, “the prophet said to my father, one of your children will succeed in business”. Although it was a vague vision for the daughter and father, they appreciated the thought yet left them wondering who and what will it be. Few years after migrating to Canada in 1996, this IT couple Dories and Edmund Pedro together with their children Jeremy, Patricia and Timothy decided to put up a small Filipino grocery store - Tatak Pinoy in the southeast part of Calgary. During the transition years, their business was being manned by no other than Dories’ father.
As it got busier, Dories eventually left her daytime job, helped her dad and concentrated on their family business. Dories is thankful that they have loyal customer base reciprocating the excellent customer service they exemplified and treating them like their own family. It became more visible when the couple ventured into another business and opened the next door food establishment, the what we know right now in the Midnapore area’s Kutsara at Tinidor Restaurant. As I came into the door, I can’t help but notice the tastefully designed wall with murals of spoons and forks from famous attractions of the Philippines. On top of that, the dainty restaurant is not only spick and span but also clutter free. While trying their best offerings, I have had the pleasant opportunity talking about Kutsara at Tinidor’s success story. May I share with you, our readers and followers, the rest of the history from the lady owner herself Dories Pedro of KT. How did you choose the name Kutsara Tinidor for your restaurant? The idea came from our oldest son, who suggested that Kutsara and Tinidor is uniquely identifiable to Filipino Cuisines. What are among best menu offerings prepared here at KT? Few of our best sellers are our famous Pork BBQ, Pancit con Lechon, Crunchy Turon de Saba banana and of course our year round refreshing
dessert - halo-halo. We also offer other specialties such as All-day Silog breakfast as well as our other hot seller, adobo rice with lechon. What made you different from other Filipino restaurants in Calgary? We are proud to offer Filipino favourites that are reasonably priced with laid back ambiance. More of a family set up where everyone in the family can dine. Office workers around the area are among our regular clients which comprise of 80/20 with latter are non Filipinos yet they even take food to their homes and share with their families or friends. How do you prepare your food? We have a built in kitchen, and make everything from scratch. With reliable kitchen and restaurant staff, our daily operations are in order. Do you cater for parties or special occasions? Although we are not yet ready to cater as of yet, we accept take out party size orders given a 48-72 hours notice. How do you keep your establishment competitive? It is a cozy casual with a touch of class. We offer quality food and service at a very reasonable price. We tried to deviate from the ordinary carinderia We take pride of cleanliness and orderly within the kitchen and restaurant. Staff on duty are required to wear hair nets, gloves and clean uniforms. We assure that
Kutsara Tinidor Restaurant

The Main Ingredient Special Feature the highest standard of hygiene from food preparation to serving area is adhere at all times. Since its opening how did financial aspect of the business progressed? We are so pleased that within 2 years, we were able see our ROI. Between Thursday- Sunday, at lunch hour, the restaurant is at its peak with clients from nearby offices. Then again after 4pm on their way home for take outs. How did you choose the location of your businesses? SE Calgary, particularly Midnapore area has lots of potential as there are hardly Filipino establish-
ments. So from a Filipino grocery store, we thought of a one stop shop idea and opened a restaurant next door to fill your tummy after shopping.
We will continue with more community involvement and development which is our way of giving back to our clients and supporters.
What are your plans for the restaurant? Considering any expansion? Expansion at this moment is on hold. Our 2 businesses really consume our time. We are totally hands on, and we want to make sure that we can give our 100% proper management before adding another one. The restaurant being adjacent to the grocery store at this point is very manageable for small business owners like us.
Please invite our followers and readers to visit and try your delicious food and specialties here at Kutsara at Tinidor Restaurant. We are looking forward to have everyone while you are in the SE area to come and visit Kutsara at Tinidor Restaurant. We are open every Tuesday- Sunday 11am-8pm, located at 24 Midlake Blvd, SE Calgary. Try the best Pancit and crispiest Turon in town as well the tastiest BBQ in the city.

2015 has started the year of grim HR buzzwords - retrenchments, hiring freezes, recession and budget cuts are some of the first to come to mind. Jobs in most industries and roles were major casualties of the global financial crisis, thrusting leaders into an unflattering spotlight and straining relationships between HR and staff. While a new year signals the arrival of opportunities for jobseekers, it does not necessarily translate to a fresh start for employers. Dealing with the aftermath of the financial crisis will not be an easy task. Between managing expectations, strengthening trust with employees, and continuous efforts to control costs, HR will have its hands full with a number of different people-related issues. At the same time, it’s not all bad news for HR. Companies in this region

are more upbeat about their economic prospects. Indeed, HR issues will be more pronounced than ever before, but the mood in boardrooms appears to be lifting as the period of recovery begins. When asked to enumerate the likely challenges of 2015, most HR consultants say they are concerned with resources for managing talent. Among their chief priorities are talent retention and skills development as a strengthening economy opens more doors to recruits. Branding and attraction will also be an issue for HR, particularly in companies whose reputations have suffered from decisions to cut staff. The end of the economic downturn may be drawing near but employers still have to look carefully at their balance sheets. Residual uncertainties from a year of pay slashes will continue to have an impact on employee morale in 2015. Companies will be scrambling to adjust salaries and pay bonuses to keep up with employee expectations and maintain loyalties. For this reason, compensation and benefits issues were also prominent on experts’ lists. If 2014 made one thing apparent, it’s the way HR functions in locally-based companies link to those
9
in offshore sites. With the economic crisis affecting economies on a global scale, this was a year for re-assessing international assignments. Employers had to adjust remuneration packages according to the sudden weakening or strengthening of currencies in host countries. Additionally, overseas assignments might have been seen as major career incentives before budget cuts forced companies to scale back. HR will have to communicate across borders to restore and re-assess expatriate packages in the upcoming year. Employers and employees agree that 2014 was a year of inequity – whether in terms of salary cuts compared to rising costs of living, or overtime hours versus leisure time. Achieving Work-Life Balance shifted from the check-list to the wish-list in 2014, but it is likely to be solidly back on the agenda in 2015. The fact that experts are moving it to 2015’s HR challenges list is both good and bad news. It is heartening that work-life balance will become a priority, and that HR may be better equipped to give employees that much-needed break. However, like each of the top five challenges facing HR professionals in 2015, it indicates HR will certainly have its work cut out for it. 5. Perceptions of HR Experts found it difficult to rank something so subjective and multilayered, but most agreed that this is an issue HR must address. HR has been one of the most vilified departments in many organisations this year, and its efforts to limit attrition were largely underestimated. Not only does HR
have to improve its image in the eyes of employees, it has to strengthen ties with other business departments. Research from one International Recruitment Agency shows HR is still seen as a back-office,
transactional and operational function in Canada and much of North America. Buy-in from senior management is often hard to come by as well. Yet, high expectations await HR. Base on a Report, 12% of survey respondents said a dominating priority would be ensuring HR strategy is the cornerstone of the overall corporate strategy. HR departments must examine their effectiveness and the way they deliver services to ensure it becomes a high-performing function moving into 2015. Suggestions for improvement vary according to consultants. Some suggest HR outsourcing as an important solution. It enables HR to decrease its administrative burdens and practice a more direct approach to business needs. Others believe leaders should work to give a stronger definition to HR roles in the organisation so they are more aligned with business requirements. 4. Cost control Cost control will be a corporate-wide priority in 2015, but there will be added pressure on HR to manage budgets through process and policy standardisation. HR must consider cost-efficient solutions in areas such as compensation and benefits and training programmes.
But if forecasts show an upturn is on the way, why will cost control still be a challenge? We recruiters remind employers that recovery in 2015 will not be so drastic that employers no longer have the challenge of dealing with budget constraints. Organisations will not restore budgets and head counts to anything near pre-crisis levels as they want to maintain continuous efforts to be as distanced from the effects of the economic downturn as possible. In multinationals particularly, the mantra “do more with less” has trickled from headquarter offices in the US and Europe to Asia, despite this region faring relatively better in the crisis. But economic uncertainty is not an excuse to ignore the backbone of any business: the people. Right now, HR will be under significant pressure to reduce costs for international assignments. Two-thirds of participants reported that they intend to review various facets of their benefits policy in the upcoming year. However, employers are also struggling to find a balance between cost management and finding the right talent to post overseas. These conflicting requirements will be continued on page 11

June 11, 2015 – Calgary, Alberta The House of Commons Standing Committee on the Status of Women presented today its report entitled Women in Skilled Trades and Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Occupations in the House of Commons. Calgary Centre MP Joan Crockatt, a member of the Committee, stated “I hope that this will be the catalyst to encourage young girls and women who are studying, looking for a job, or establishing themselves in skilled trades and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. This report is a call to action for parents, teachers, and others in STEM to bring their expertise to mentor young girls in these fields; to enrich their futures and put them on the path toward a bright and successful career.” Skilled trades and
STEM occupations represent rewarding employment opportunities for women across the country. The committee found women on average could raise their incomes 127 per cent on the day of hire, after completing a program in the skilled trades called “Women Building Futures.” As well, women’s presence in skilled trades and STEM occupations has benefited these occupations, which have acquired talented and skilled female workers, and has benefited the Canadian economy as a whole. The central efforts to address women’s underrepresentation include: the early engagement of girls in skilled trades and STEM fields; the support of mentors and the presence of role models; raising awareness of and correcting misconceptions about skilled trades and STEM occupations; addressing
organizational barriers, improving culture, and instituting family-friendly policies in the workplace. The report’s findings are based on testimony from the Committee’s study on women in skilled trades and STEM occupations in Canada. Testimony was provided by 30 witnesses – two of whom appeared as individuals, with the remainder representing 20 organizations – over a total of six meetings held between March and May 2015. May 16, 2015. High River, Alberta. The first Cultural Taste of High River, sponsored by The Foothills Community Immigrant Services (FCIS) held at the High River United Church was attended by more than 350 H-Riverites and visitors from neighboring areas. The affair coincided with the 57th Annual Little Britches Parade, one of the many events held at various locations around the Town. The ethnic foods prepared by Mexicans, Haitians, Hondurans, Thais, Sri Lankans and Filipinos received positive reviews. “This event is an excellent idea. We should have this every year.” An elderly couple said. “Where are the Pinoys in High River?” a retired Filipina nurse from Edmonton (visiting her friends in High River) asked one of the volunteers. Pansit, pulburon and biko (noodles, pinoy short bread and rice cake) were distinctly different from other foods served. The Filipino dishes were prepared and served by Betero, Miraflores, Dela Cruz, Pesigan and Gella Families. The event cultivated a sense and taste of belongingness between and among the town folks and growing ethnic communities in High River.

I was in the car waiting for my wife when my cell buzzed. We were on our way to a restaurant along Memorial Drive. “Hello!” I said. “Kuya we are here now and waiting for you,” the caller answered. We reached the place in less than five minutes. After moments of pleasantries I was asked to grace the occasion. I walked toward the head table where the birthday celebrant and his wife were seated. I scanned the room and counted
20 people. Our growling stomachs fast tracked my prayer. Turning 50 was a milestone for Jack. Three young beautiful daughters and a supportive wife seemed to be the motivation that kept him on top of his career and family life. The food was warm, tasty and greasy. The room was lively with younger ones’ chatter dominating the room while us oldies savoured a number of prohibited foods. The chewing, talking, sharing,
laughing and joking went well. It was a night of sincere bonding, enriching friendship and simply enjoying life. Minutes later the food calmed us down to the minimum. The server put the bill on the table with fortune cookies on a tray. Diane, Jack’s better half, grabbed the bill and distributed the cookies. As expected, all had positive messages. Top 5 HR Challenges for 2015 a major HR consideration in 2015. Mercer consultants suggest looking for measures to contain costs. Organisations can leverage economies of scale from regional frameworks on executive pay, employee health and benefit programmes, and training and development. Meanwhile, recruitment consultants predict that some HR departments will go through restructuring themsleves. They may opt to outsource more non-essential activities, they told HRM. 3. Employee Engagement If there is a lesson to be learned from past recessions, it’s the erosion of employee commitment in organisations. Cost-cutting measures and other effects from the economic downturn have impacted levels of trust and loyalty in employees. Many are feeling stressed and nervous. The upturn will see some of an organisation’s best and brightest workers leaving to join competitors if their employers don’t take immediate steps to motivate and retain them. According to one recruitment agency, 14 % of respondents to one of its recent surveys expect employee engagement and re-engagement to be linked closely with staff retention next year. The
HR challenges lie in reconnecting with the mood of the workforce, rebuilding trust and collaboration, and driving continuous and transparent communication. A great emphasis should be placed on measuring employee engagement levels within organisations. Employee surveys, for example, will be very useful in highlighting where HR is succeeding and which areas can be improved. HR should know its key talent segments and find out what they value. Mercer consultants say employers might be surprised at new trends that are emerging, particularly in areas of work-life balance. If resignations become more frequent, HR must structure its exit interview process to find out why people are leaving, and what it can to do retain current and future employees. Feedback should not just address HR’s initiatives - leaders should also be assessed on their roles in motivating employees. Besides feedback, HR can be proactive with its retention efforts. Change management programmes must adequately address employee needs. Paying special attention to career development opportunities will send a message to employees that their growth in the organisa-
tion is encouraged and valued. Leaders must be deployed and equipped at all levels to inspire employees to work towards a common goal in order to minimise distractions and increase productivity. (To be continued next issue)

Have you ever been to a chill bar in the Philippines? Bands playing with acoustic guitar and beatbox covering pop songs, you and your friends just ordered a case of Redhorse and mani for pulutan -this is what the concert of Ed Sheeran in Edmonton feels like last June 14th. Oh did I forget it is 200x better. Alone in the stage with just a dark jeans and plaid shirt – and of course his acoustic guitar he serenades the soldout dome for 2 hours. It quite mesmerizing how he captured more than 13,000 hearts with no backup dancers or prop- just him, his voice and his looping pedals that records and layers short passages played on an his guitar and plays them back in a repeating loop. The English ginger plays all the favorites from his first album “+ “(plus) Lego Team, Drunk,
ED SHEERAN A Team and his current album “X” (multiply) Don’t, Photograph and the hit- Thinking out loud. He also performed I See Fire, which he wrote for the soundtrack movie of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug with a clip of the movie playing at different size TV screens in the stage. Back to album names though, what’s up with that. “I’m expecting big things from you- dancing, singing, clapping” as he told the crowd to jam with him. The crowd complied of course but I’m pretty sure Ed don’t have to asked that as everyone would I presume went home with a hoarse voice and low battery for turning on the flashlights of their phones for singing and lighting Rexall. The concert was just magic as he performed; even if you are bitterly single you can’t help but fall in love with his music. It’s sexy,
sweet and simple, warm, pure, innocent yet provocative. The concert was opener was the Rixton, a hot British four member band that plays pop music; however can actually be soulful and rock as well. They bring the audience in there feet as they groove and play the hit single- Me and My Broken Heart, Hotel Ceiling, Make Out, Wait on Me. The song Appreciated just went out to everyone as the songs talks about appreciating those special people in our lives. Currently Rixton will continue as supporting act in Ed Sheeran’s North American tour and will soon be joining Ariana Grande’s upcoming North American and European tour. Ed Sheeran ongoing tour in North America will continue to visit fans until December 19th ending the tour this year at Auckland, New Zealand.

Senator Enverga and Secretary Nicolas, with officials from Canada and the Philippines, May 25, 2015
Ottawa, June 1, 2015 – The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator, joined the Honourable Ed Fast, Minister of International Trade, for an official trade mission to the Republic of the Philippines, May 24-28, 2015, to meet with business leaders and government officials to build upon the important commercial links that exist between the two countries. “I was honoured to be with Minister Fast on this important trade mission, and we took part in many productive meetings that will further strengthen the commercial ties between Canada and the Philippines,” said Senator Enverga in a statement upon his return. “The Philippines has emerged as one of the fastest growing economies in the Asia Pacific region and one of the priority emerg-
ing markets for Canada’s continuing prosperity,” he continued. The main aim of the mission was to raise the profile of Canadian companies in the Philippines and increase awareness there of Canadian capabilities in sectors such as agriculture and processed food, defense and security, information and communication technology, infrastructure, and sustainable technologies. “I am happy to be able to use my unique position as Canada’s first senator of Filipino descent, and I had several meetings, where I was able to bring this unique perspective to the table with different stakeholders. I was especially pleased to be able to meet with the President of the Senate of the Philippines, the Honorable Senator Franklin M. Drilon, and Secretary Imelda M. Nicolas, Chairperson of the
Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO) to discuss the commitments made during the recent State Visit of the President to Canada, and the reform to the Canadian Temporary Foreign Worker program. We also witnessed the signing of several agreements between Canadian and Philippine companies. There is still much more to be done, and I trust that we have established a solid foundation from which to continue.” For more information please contact:

Senator Enverga with PHB President Carol Banes and Scarborough Ontario Serniors Association’s Choral Group
Ottawa, June 11, 2015 – The Honourable Tobias C. Enverga Jr., Ontario Senator, paid tribute to the Philippine Heritage Band and its 35th anniversary in the Senate of Canada. His speech in the Senate Chamber followed the 3rd annual Philippine Flag Raising on the Hill event in celebration of the 117th Philippine Independence Day, which has been taking place every year since the appointment of Canada’s first senator of Filipino descent. Hundreds of guests from Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal attended this year’s flag raising ceremony and unfurling of a gigantic Philippine Flag on Parliament Hill. “Honourable senators, when I last saw the PHB perform in early May this year, they were playing His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III, President of the Philippines, and the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, onto the stage of Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto for the
two leaders to confirm the strengthening of bilateral ties between Canada and the Republic of the Philippines,” said Senator Enverga in his statement. “I want to thank the PHB’s founder, Oscar Farinas, for having the vision to create the band in 1980, and I want to thank Caroline Bañez, the current president, for keeping the PHB a strong and vibrant organization and for all the good work that is done by them in our community,” the Senator continued. Senator Enverga paid tribute to the Philippine Heritage Band as being a stellar example of how the nearly 800,000 Filipino-Canadians contribute to Canada’s growing multicultural reality. He also highlighted that the Philippines became the largest source country of permanent residents last year with over 40,000 new permanent residents from the country coming to Canada.

I cannot say no since the game of basketball is part of our Filipino heritage. Basketball is our sport. I hope everyone will come and join us on both the semi and the grand finals.” At the start of FCBL, 10 participating teams were divided into two groups. Group A was composed of Huskies, Great-
way, Balck Gold, Brgy.1 SW and Clean Pro. Meanwhile teams put together under Group B were Velocity, WillowPark, WildCards, JR 12 and Soul Rebels. Summer is finally here, and families across the country are ready to hit the road and get away from it all. Make sure your car is ready for the journey, too. A pre-trip auto checkup could make all the difference. Take good care of your car before you leave, and it will take good care of you out on the road. The easiest way to safeguard your road trip is to let a mechanic perform a full safety inspection on your car a week or so before your trip. Having a mechanic look at your car the day before your trip is not a good idea. If there’s a problem, it could take some time to fix. A big, last-minute auto repair ruin or force you to delay your trip. So let a mechanic give your car the once-over a week or two before your trip. In a safety inspection, a mechanic will check everything from fluid levels, belts, and hoses to lights, tires, and brakes to make sure your car is ready for the road. A safety inspection should cover the following things:

If you have not changed your oil in the last 6,000 km now would be a good time to change it. Top off any fluids that are low. Buy extra bottles of each type to keep in the trunk, in case you should need them and are not near a service station. Do your wipers give you a smear-free view when it rains? If not, replace them before your trip. Make sure your car’s battery and cables are securely attached and free of corrosion. Car batteries typically last three to five years. Check the brakes. Make sure your brakes are at least 50 percent. If they are lower than that, and you are driving more than 2,000 km round trip,

radio on and listened to the news. Another strong earthquake shook Nepal for the second time. The first quake took more than 8,000 lives. Hundreds casualties were recorded in the last one. Sloughing comfortably on my couch, from nowhere, a thought hit me hard. The past two months were filled with celebrations like mothers’ day, birthdays and other social gatherings. In Nepal and around the world (Syria, Ukraine, Africa, etc) thousands of people will never celebrate birthdays and hug their love ones again. The thought was heart-wrenching. Moments later, acid reflux interrupted my contemplation and diverted my thoughts to a number of nice happenings experienced earlier in the restaurant. The
comfort and safety of family and friends were once again affirmed and reinforced. The simplicity of being with dear ones over greasy-soaked-noodles and fried-hard-rice were worth enduring. The joy of sharing life stories – successes and challenges – was insightful and inspiring. And, lastly, the importance of relationship (with family, friends and neighbors) over material things was truly worth celebrating. Time is fleeting and so are our lives and celebrations. Let us celebrate with a renewed understanding by preparing and looking to God for whatever the future may hold, and dwelling more on things that are “noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent or praiseworthy.”

Spirit’s presence and work in us and in the Church. Throughout the history of our salvation, God has gradually prepared us by word and action for the ultimate disclosure of Himself as Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In a very special way, the mystery of the Holy Trinity was revealed in the person, words and works of Jesus Christ. He revealed His Father as his Father and “our” Father and Himself as God’s eternal and divine Son. He also made known a third divine person, the
Holy Spirit, the lord and giver of life, whom the Father and He, as risen Lord, would send to His Church. He calls His disciples to become God’s children through the gift of the Spirit which He bestows on them. As we celebrate Holy Trinity Sunday, let us celebrate our uniqueness as individual persons and our unity as community which manifest the diversity of the three persons in one God. Let us celebrate our being created in God’s image and likeness.

The Book of Genesis mentions that we are created in God’s image and likeness. It describes God’s oneness as well as God’s diversity in three persons as manifested in our human condition. We believe that God’s oneness is also manifested in the uniqueness of each and every human person. DNA technology proves this singular uniqueness of each human being which stems from being created in God’s image and likeness. Our social nature as human beings is also rooted in God’s Trinitarian nature, reflecting God’s diversity as persons. In the mystery of salvation, we are redeemed not only as individual persons but as a people, as a community, as Church. The unity and diversity that is found in our communities is the manifestation of God’s oneness in three diverse persons, united by the principle of selfless love. When Jesus came to our world, he taught us to see God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. One of the ways we get to know God as Father is through the world of creation and through God’s providential love for us. We know God as Son through the ministry of Jesus among us. We get to know God as Holy Spirit through the

“Nung tayo pa, lagi kitang tinatanong kung mahal mo ako? Lagi kang sumasagot ng, “Oo, mahal na mahal”... Ngayong wala na tayo, pwede ko bang malaman kung ganoon pa rin ang sagot mo sa tuwing tinatanong ka niya?” Dear Madame KC, Ron and I have been together since Highschool. At first napaka ganda ng samahan namin kc we’re always together na walang away. Super close ko na lahat ng kapamilya n’ya and very open kami sa relasyon namin sa mga friends namin. After I graduated college, nag immigrate ang pamilya ko dito sa Canada.
Mahirap mag move on kung ikaw mismo sa sarili mo ayaw mong mag move on.
I hope you can read between the lines ng nag alok s’ya ng kasal sa iyo at para ma sponsor mo na s’ya. Kung nanghihinayang ka sa pinagsamahan that’s why you want to stay with someone, you are there for the wrong reason. Be wise enough to let go when you should and strong enough to hold on when you must. Madam KC

“I’d love to try acting. I’ve always been fascinated by actors ‘pag nanonood ako ng teleserye and I’d be interested in doing an acting project,” aniya.
“Masaya kasi nakikita ko ang dedication at support nila for me. Always stay humble, because without humility you won’t get as far.” Abangan ang pagsisimula ng “The Voice Kids” Season 2 ngayong Hunyo 6 sa ABS-CBN. Life could get exciting after the June 16 New Moon, when other people’s anxieties might set off yours. Stay calm and collected, and maybe start a powerful and profitable relationship.
SAGITTARIUS
You may need to introduce yourself or speak first, but after that the wheels will turn nicely.Take care that you don’t run over anyone or take over, though. You’re that energized.
CAPRICORN
Someone is waiting to help you. You become the go-to person in your family or at work later in the month. You’ll be good at it and happy to do it, but don’t let people take advantage of your good nature.
AQUARIUS
This is your month to work well with lots of people, in groups or out in public.A more creative one could turn into something lucrative, if only as a hobby that pays for itself. You don’t have to do everything at once, even if you have the energy for it.
PISCES
Take charge of something important at home later in the month. You’ll have more enthusiasm, energy, and authority to break down barriers around the New Moon. Do what makes sense to you. If you need to do it yourself, you can.
ARIES
If your friends think you’re taking over, take the high road, be agreeable, and don’t get into an argument. It’s all going to be fun, whatever it is.
TAURUS
You have endless energy and can make great progress. Just don’t drive yourself crazy or alienate friends. Talk with someone older and wiser if you feel you’re getting manic.
GEMINI

I was feeling a bit stressed lately and I need a time away from all the hassle and bustle of everyday activities. Normally I would immediately head out to the mountains and go for a hike and be with nature. But this time, I wasn’t too keen –I knew it would take much of my time prepping up and travel time, a full day affair is a consideration and expected exhaustion thereafter. I have been running quite a bit lately putting – logging in about 45-50 km a week so I must say that I am a bit worn out to even think of going hiking for the whole day. The first place that popped into my mind when it comes to relaxation and simply just chilling it out was Radium Hot Springs. Somehow I felt I need a good soaking and some R&R, so without any hesitation I packed my bags and off I went. Cruising leisurely south of Hi way 93 was a pleasure and relaxing experience in itself taking the views along Kootenay National Park. A three hour drive seems too short with all the great views and wildlife encounters. There were a few brown and black bears along the side of the road. I felt blessed to encounter these amazing creatures as I very seldom see them. There were deer and goat family in the middle of the road that forced me to stop and activate my flashers. I felt that I could just drive even without destination – just simply enjoying the journey. I arrived at the village and greeted immediately by a mountain goat strolling right in the middle of the road oblivious to my present or any cars that passed by. I was only an arm’s length away as passed beside it with my window down and I can see the pupils on those large round eyes. I checked in to my hotel and without further delay, I started exploring the village. Right across the street from the hotel was the Rotary Park. I decided early on that I wasn’t going to do any hiking but when I saw this trail, I couldn’t resist. The trail has a few switchbacks leading to the ravine and through the culvert where the rapids use by salmon as they spawn for their seasonal rituals. The cool breeze through the alpine forest by the stream was exhilarating. A school of mountain goats crosses my path as they headed to the stream to drink some water, several species of birds flew around me as if to welcome me to their home was a sight I would only imagine in a fairy. I was able to photograph the moment but I am sure this is not enough to justify the magic moment.

Soaking the worries away at
Radium Hot Springs
One of station of the cross statues
The Pulse of the village My hunger starting to set in, there were only a few eateries in this small village. As I meander, I noticed the menus in the restaurants seem overpriced but I didn’t have much choice but to deal with it after all this is a tourist town. I decided to lunch in Back Country Jack restaurant. It looks busy and there was a line up, I though that must be good when all these people are going in. The ambiance was a bit of a rustic but aesthetically enhanced with bright colored paint. The servers were quick mostly wore a stringed halter tops and most were completely covered with body tattoos. The food was ok but nothing to write
home about. Across the road, there was a short paved trail life size diorama of the station of the cross. The knights of Columbus have commissioned and restored these statues over the years. There were 14 stations depicting the episodes of Jesus’ leading to his death on the cross. It is used by devoted Christians for their prayer walks and most especially during Easter holidays. Invermere on the Lake After I had enough of village life, it’s time to explore the beach scene. Invermere is only 15 minutes drive away south along Hi way 93 from Radium. Here you will find a lively atmosphere beach
culture. This is one of my favorite places in the valley. It offers a wide variety of water activities and a great arts and culture scene. There are a few fine art galleries which is my true cup-o-tea looking at the works of local artisans. Exploring by walking leisurely the surrounding areas and residences was peaceful. I admire the open spaces and some houses without fences we are accustom to see in the city as if to say wild animals are welcome anytime to graze in my lawn and shrubs. Relaxing at the beach under a cloudless sky was as much enjoyable as laying at the beach in Miami or in the Caribbean. The only difference is you don’t hear the surfs smashing into the shore.
Back to the Village After a full day of exploring, nothing could be more relaxing than to soak in the mineral hot spring in Radium. Studies have proven that there is a tremendous health benefits in this naturally heated spring waters. Geologically speaking, Radium was named after it was discovered that its spring contains a certain amount of Radium along with other minerals such as “Bromine, Calcium, Fluorine, Sodium, Lithium, Phosphorus, Manganese, Iron, Arsenic, Radium, and more in the water” it is found that these minerals have many valuable healing and therapeutic proper-
ties. (Hot Springs - Discover the Healing Power of Water - Mary Abraham) You will find as you soaked your worries away, it is very easy to lose track of time. Allow yourself just about 30 to 40 minutes, because staying too long will raise your blood pressure and dehydration will set in which could cause dizziness and possibly faint. A mini vacation most often is all we need to rejuvenate our tired souls. A walk in the park, a visit to a museum or art galleries or even a bike ride will do great things on your quest for physical and mental conditioning. There is much greater benefit to this in your mind, body and soul than doing the retail therapy – trust me!
