Immigrants get Bill C-6 as 150th Bday Gift Cheryl Posadas-Guinsatao EDITOR IN-CHIEF

A 150th birthday present to immigrants from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is the passage of Bill C-6 amending the previous Harper government’s Citizenship Act of 2014, which created the two-tiered Canadian citizenship perceived by some immigrants as racist. The passage of BillC-6 further affirms Canada’s positive view of immigration, according to Trudeau.

“We made a commitment to Canadians to protect their citizenship and we have delivered,” said the current Minister of Immigration Ahmed Hussen, himself an immigrant from Somalia. “Canada’s identity has always been shaped by the significant economic, cultural and social contributions of immigrants. Changes to the Citizenship Act will enhance program integrity, while giving more flexibility to eligible applicants to meet the requirements for citizenship so that they can continue

building successful lives in Canada,” he added. Under the new legislation, permanent residents of Canada may apply for citizenship sooner than previously. However, it should be noted that some of the measures contained in the legislation will not come into force until later this year or early 2018, while some measures came into force immediately. Below are the detailed provisions of Bill C-6 which has received Royal Assent and is now law.

Summer is often filled with significant events, celebrated nationally, provincially and locally. Millions of Canadians engage and participate in various festivals, fairs, and concerts across the country. It is also a time where cultural identities are being showcased and appreciated. Commemorations and celebrations bring unity, cooperation, good will and understanding, gluing together and strengthening the fabric of society. Strangely and on a few occasions, community celebrations are platforms where shortcomings and neglect (intentional or not) are being played out by an interest group (including the government). Point in case was the “no mention of Alberta” from the Prime

Minister’s speech during the country’s 150 Anniversary held in Ottawa. For whatever reason, the train has left the station. Many pundits, politicians and Albertans were obviously outraged and insulted.

the other one with a placard). It was safe to assume that Filipino-Calgarians who watched the parade were expecting to see a larger Pinoy contingent in the parade. Three definitely did not bring much glee!

Close to home was the celebration of the Philippines 119th Independence day celebration. Quite possibly for the first time in Filipino-Calgarian community history the traditional flag raising ceremony in front of the City hall was not held. A number of people, though, held the event on top of a building. And many wondered why.

Interestingly, the Philippine independence and stampede experiences conjure questions directed to the shakers, leaders, influencers, power makers and public servants in the Filipino community. In light of our big Filipino population (60K +/-); the expected unifying effect of Philippine Consular Office and the energetic presence of more than 30 Pinoy associations in Calgary; unity and cooperation still seem to be an unachieved dream.

Just last week during the Calgary Stampede Parade, our community, the second largest ethnic population in the city, was visibly represented by three Pinoys (two holding the Philippine flag and

Calgary, based on the above observations, is regressively changing. Change for improvement is better. However, change that fosters division and animosity is ridiculously insulting to the intellect, morality, ethics and sense of

Filipino-Calgarians. All in all, the community expects and demands strong, non-partisan and selfless leaders (government and community associations), period! Wouldn’t you say so?

About Salome: A young girl of seventeen years, who lives by the edge of the lake and Elias’ sweetheart and about to marry. Salome is an example of the Filipino woman’s loyalty and modesty. Rizal often drew his characters from real people in his life, and it is believed that Salome is a shadow of Leonor Rivera ( author’s real life sweetheart). “Elias and Salome” was originally the twenty-fifth chapter of the Noli Me Tangere one of the two books of the national hero Jose Rizal’s that started the Philippine Revolution.

On its 6th year of Independence Day celebration outside The Philippines, PICC- SKS went out, literally, to Elliston Park, Calgary for a double celebration. The 119tj Philippine Independence & Canada 150th was very well attended by leaders of the community, organizations, associations, businesses, political figures and integrated cultures. The celebration started with a traditional parade,

waving of flags a line up of program. activities, entertainment, raffles and speeches which filled the whole day. One of the event’s highlight is the launch of “Pancit Festival” and “Lechon Galore” . 6 big trays and versions of pancit were donated by different Filipino restaurants within the city and 6 large Lechons (roasted. whole pigs) were served during the feast. Over a

thousand of people from different cultures lined up for the sumptuous meal. Elliston Park now becomes the home of Philippine Independence Day for the next yeara to come. The organizing committee was very pleased with the overwhelming success and support they receive from Calgary residents who find time and celebrated with then.

Temperatures over 25 C and high humidity can challenge your vehicle’s air conditioning system. Here are five easy tips to keep you and your passengers cool on the road. 1. If possible, leave the windows down slightly on hot days to reduce heat build-up. An A/C system works by removing heat, so the cooler the interior is to start with, the easier and faster the A/C will do its job. 2. When you get in the car, open all the windows completely, or even open the doors, for a moment to vent the hot interior air quickly. 3. When you first turn the A/C on, set the controls to MAX or REC and use highest blower speed. This moves the greatest volume of air and re-circulates it for even faster cooldown. As soon as you are comfortable, switch the system to NORM or OUTSIDE or FRESH, and select a lower fan speed. The lower blower speed produces colder the air from the system. 4. Does your cool air

Remember to set the system to the OUTSIDE air mode (not REC) frequently to help prevent or lessen this problem. 5. Automatic Temperature Control systems operate differently than manual systems. Used car pricing Used car pricing reports typically produce three forms of pricing information. Dealer or Retail Price is the price you should expect to pay if buying from a licensed new-car or used-car dealer — retail price. Dealer Trade-in Price or wholesale price is the price you should expect to receive from a dealer if you trade in a car. This is also the price that a dealer will typically pay for a car at a dealer wholesale auction. Private-Party Price is the price you should expect to pay if you were buying from an individual. A private-party seller is hoping to get more money than they would with a trade-in to a dealer. A private-party buyer is hoping to pay less than the dealer retail price. The growth of the Internet has fueled the availability of information on the prices of used cars. This information was once only available in trade publications that dealers had access to. There are now numerous sources for used car pricing. Multiple sources of used car pricing means that listed values from different sources may differ. Each pricing guide receiving data from different sources and makes

different judgments about that data. Pricing of used cars can be affected by geography. For example, convertibles have a higher demand in warmer climates than in cooler areas. Similarly, pickup trucks may be more in demand in rural than urban settings. The overall condition of the vehicle has a major impact on pricing. Condition is based on appearances, vehicle history, mechanical condition, and mileage. There is much subjectivity in how the condition of a car is evaluated. There are various theories as to how the market determines the prices of used cars sold by private parties, especially relative to new cars. One theory suggests that new car dealers are able to put more effort into selling a car, and can therefore stimulate stronger demand. Another theory suggests that owners of problematic cars (“lemons”) are more likely to want to sell their cars than owners of perfectly functioning vehicles. Therefore, someone buying a used car bears a higher risk of buying a lemon, and the market price tends to adjust downwards to reflect that.

Start them young, so the saying goes. Sports is important in a child’s character building. It teaches our youth the value of teamwork, discipline, camaraderie. Sports help build self confidence and allows kids to put their bursting energy to good use. In Banff, there are various sporting events and classes that are designed for kids. Most are organized and sponsored by

non-profits, the municipality, and some businesses. Kids can enjoy sports for free or for minimal cost. Banff is a community that loves the outdoors and physical activity. It is a community that finds real value in introducing kids early on to sports and recreation, whether indoors or outdoors, anything that pulls them away from their gadgets or couches. Two sports events in June highlighted the kids love for sports. The Banff Minor Soccer, a volunteer-run organization

that offers a recreational program for Bow Valley youth who are interested in playing soccer, held its end-of-season tournament in the last week of June. Meanwhile, the Banff Kids Marathon, sponsored by Bank of Montreal, is an annual event held usually in the midweek of June. The kids that participated in these events are in the age range of 3-12. Photos taken during these events will attest to how much the kids enjoy their time and their enviable zest for life.

Who is Mary?

Being aware of what’s encroaching (influencing) us Ymor H.

Fr. Edmund Vargas COLUMNIST

We can reflect on Christ’s life and times from the perspective of Mary, Christ’s mother and His closest disciple. Christ’s coming into our world can be seen from the perspective of Mary’s own preparations for the birth of her own Son, our Savior. Her intense awareness of Christ’s presence in our lives can inspire to make His presence more meaningful to us. Mary is a model for us as we try to imitate her sense of humility and obedience as she struggles to reconcile her own personal wish to remain a virgin in her entire life with God’s will for her to become the mother of the Redeemer. God’s presence in her womb

is a powerful inspiration that can motivate us to create a space for God’s presence in our own personal lives. Mary is our role model in accepting God’s coming into our complicated lives. We have to appreciate Mary’s sense of openness and humility is welcoming into her own private life the birth of the Savior of the world. We can learn so much from Mary’s love and generosity as she surrenders her own will to follow God’s will in her life. As we continue to honor Mary through the year, let us reflect on our popular prayer to her: Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed are thou amongst women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy

Mary, mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen. In Mary’s fullness of God’s grace, we seek to fill our own emptiness for God’s love and mercy. In Mary’s presence in the Lord, we re-discover our own presence before the Lord in the various given opportunities of our life. In Mary’s holiness, we renew our resolve to be holy and to share the love and presence of Jesus with others. With the help and intercession of Mary, we ask God to inspire and guide us to be more conscious of our sinfulness and our need for forgiveness and reconciliation as we remind ourselves of the end of our earthly journey in death and/or Christ’s second coming.

During the past several months, millions of people around the world have been and continue to be anxious and fearful. From London to Tehran, Iraq and the Philippines (in Marawi city where at least 202 have died, including 134 terrorists, 38 government troops and 30 civilians), many have perished because of hatred, ideology or differences in belief. Canadians are not spared from the impact of these dreadful events. Likewise, other forms of assault to Canadians are creeping with impunity. The horizon is clouded with economic uncertainties. On the social front, confusion is taking hold. With the political landscape full of challenges and morality turned relative. Fake news is overtaking truth. Mental diseases are adding

burden to many families. Spiritual bankruptcy is on the rise. Relationships are on the brink of collapse. The drum of war is getting louder. Climate change is ever changing. Where do we go from here? Ignore, evade, let it be, or face the problems head on are the options at hand. To ignore is to make one vulnerable. To evade is to miss opportunity. Letting it pass means more collateral damage. Facing it head on is a picture of maturity. And maturity is the correct and appropriate response to any event in life – individually and collectively. Closer to home, there is a general feeling that our community is indifferent or even oblivious to what is currently happening.

Join us in honoring the Centennial Image of Our Lady of Fatima! St James Church (5504 20th Street SW) welcomes the Centennial Image of Our Lady of Fatima with an Outdoor Procession on Friday, July 21, 6 pm, followed by Holy Mass at 7 pm. Everyone is welcome! On January 11, 2017 six statues of the Immaculate Heart of Mary were blessed by Pope Francis as the “International Centennial Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Fatima” commissioned by the Alliance of the Holy Family International (AHFI) and Human Life International Austria. Brought together by a common goal, that is, to re-echo the Blessed Mother’s URGENTappeal to the world for PRAYER and REPARATION, these two global apostolates tandem together to bring her Centennial Pilgrim Image to parishes in all countries in the year of her 100th Anniversary as Our Lady of Fatima (1917-2017). After the blessing of the Holy Father, one pilgrim image will be brought and accompanied by the missionaries of the AHFI to visit parishes and dioceses in every country per continent.

Remarkably, few are passionately engaged in various social issues that threaten our social fabric. And the rest, as if, are content on ignoring, evading and letting go these concerns that in the long run affect the very essence of community in particular and society in general. The gravity of social issues engulfing society should not be taken lightly. The closer these issues get into peoples’ lives the more confusion and chaos will flourish in society. Being aware and vigilant are necessary steps to take into account. Complacency and non-engagement affect everyone. To be part of the solution requires intension and resolve. Being aware of what’s encroaching (influencing) us is the key to coming up with appropriate responses.

I never said anything when he told me his feeling for me had diminished. He said that the friendship we had was so true that he could not afford to lose it. He said he was afraid that time would come when we would have to part ways so he was trying to save the friendship while he still could. I am working on my papers for my permanent residency. But until now, I’m not sure if I want to stay here for good. His papers will expire on January. What if he decides to go back to Philippines for

Letting go is not going to be easy as they say. I know God has a reason for doing this to me. But does it have to be this painful? I remember one time you said that letting the person know how you feel and pursuing what you feel are totally different things. All I want is to let him know na mahal na mahal ko siya. Sincerely yours, Marlyn ==========

Dear Marlyn, Naniniwala ako na umaasa ka sa taong nand’yan pa para s’yo pero matagal na s’yang wala. Naghahanap lang ng magandang reason si Richard para makawala sa inyong relasyon. You know how men can get away with words. Saving the friendship was just an excuse. Napaka unfair at selfish when he wanted you to hold on and see if he still loved you after a year had passed.
