New Global Talent Stream for TFW to Facilitate Two-Week Work Permit Processing Time Cheryl Posadas-Guinsatao EDITOR IN-CHIEF

Government of Canada has outlined details of the new Global Talent Stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program, which will establish a two-week standard for processing of work permit applications (and temporary resident visas when applicable) for highly skilled talent. The Global Talent Stream is scheduled to be operational as of June 12, 2017. The stream is part of the government’s Global Skills Strategy, which aims to help innovative firms thrive, creating economic growth and good middle-class jobs. Speaking at the announcement of the Global Talent Stream in Toronto on March 9, Benjamin Bergen, Executive Director of the Council of Canadian Innovators, said that “The Global Skills Strategy will help high-growth Canadian technology firms by making it easier and faster to attract and acquire the global talent they need to scale up and compete on the world stage. Canada’s most

successful innovators welcome the new two-week turnaround standard for work permit applications, the streamlined process for applications, and the continued efforts of the federal government in supporting Canada’s tech sector.” With this initiative, companies in Canada will be able to bring in highly-skilled international workers quickly and efficiently. At this moment, the exact hiring situations that would be eligible for two-week processing times is in development. A Global Talent List of eligible high-demand occupations is being created in consultation with labour market experts and key stakeholders. This list is expected to be publicized in advance of the June 12 launch. The announcement was also attended by two federal cabinet ministers, namely Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, and Patty Hajdu, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour. “Canada continues to compete in a global innovation race. As technologies become more widely available to

everyone, the only competitive edge for countries and businesses is the distinctive talent and creativity of their people. While skilled immigrants are now identifying Canada as a country of choice in which to apply their knowledge and ideas, we also need to prepare our homegrown talent for a rapidly changing job market,” said Mr Bains. For her part, Ms Hadju added that “Our government’s Global Skills Strategy will give employers a faster and more predictable process for bringing in top talent and new skills to Canada.” In addition to the two-week processing time for certain work permits, the government will also create a dedicated service for companies looking to make significant job-creating investments in Canada. Further, the government will allow skilled foreign nationals working in Canada short-term (for instance, 30 days or less in a 12-month period) to work without a work permit. This latter measure will also apply to brief academic stays.

Do you believe this? EDITORIAL BOARD

Christian N. Bovee once said, “Heaven lent you a soul, Earth will lend a grave”. Filipino holy week traditions and rituals are remarkable and insightful. Participation in lent celebrations bring clarity to our faith, understanding of our purpose/s in life and strengthens our spiritual being. As expected, observance of these events should result to a higher consciousness of our dependence on God and not on our material possessions, talents, abilities and skills. It is quite fitting to revisit the seven most popular rituals and draw some contrasts and insights in today’s social context. 1. Fasting – The most common form during Lent is fasting from food. However, Lent, recession and an increase in grocery prices are making “fasting” fast, long and practical. If one includes fasting (modified) beyond Holy Week this may results to decrease in medical bills (sustenance)

for high blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol level. 2. Pabasa – Many guessed this ritual was the greatgrand-parent of Karaoke. Today, quite a number of young and old folks rent private room at a Karaoke establishment. “E-Pabasa session” becomes a way of escape from life’s reality. Song directed to self is emotionally uplifting but temporal. If offered to God, songs are spiritually uplifting and eternal. 3. Visita Iglesia - a ritual to commemorate Christ’s passion by visiting and praying at seven churches on Maundy Thursday leading to Good Friday. Many would just visit seven malls and pay for goods on sale, instead. Others pray that their credit hasn’t maxed out yet. 4. Procession - People are led to walk from station to station (total of 14 stations) with Christ’s Passion in mind. Processions of cars on Deerfoot Trail heading for Cross Iron are long. During lent many shoppers endure and enjoy the procession in the malls and cinemas.

5. Senakulo - organized by and participated in by locals, the play portrays Christ’s last days of agony and hardship in the hands of the Romans. For a large number of Canadians their agony and hardship stem from addiction to substances, and the enslaving power of vices, fortune and fame. At some point people play and portray a life that is void of God in the equation. No wonder they look like “senakulo actors” the whole year round.

6. Night Vigil - Black Saturday is when Christ is entombed. Filipinos spend the day preparing for the night vigil leading up to Easter Sunday. In many occasions people prepare for the night vigil leading up to the opening of electronic stores for the newest cellphone/ tablet model. And during a melee, Christ’s name is mentioned with cursing in between. 7. Salubong - Easter Sunday is the celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Jesus said..., “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by

MAY MGA TUGTUGING HINDI KO MALIMOT May Akda: Jose Corazon de Jesus

About Salome: A young girl of seventeen years, who lives by the edge of the lake and Elias’ sweetheart and about to marry. Salome is an example of the Filipino woman’s loyalty and modesty. Rizal often drew his characters from real people in his life, and it is believed that Salome is a shadow of Leonor Rivera ( author’s real life sweetheart). “Elias and Salome” was originally the twenty-fifth chapter of the Noli Me Tangere one of the two books of the national hero Jose Rizal’s that started the Philippine Revolution.

Fresh Powder to Hot Pool

PHOTOS & TEXT

Exploring Alberta’s winter scape doesn’t sound as enticing to many of us as warm summer days. Many would opt to completely avoid and settle into some other indoor activities. One good reason to avoid winter driving to the mountains is unpredictable weather conditions that could have an adverse impact on the road. I find winter is as adventurous as one could have in summer or in any time of year. The main thing I love about winter is of a lesser crowd to contend with; if at all possible I try to avoid them, most specially in our national parks. Busloads of tourist would flock to many popular destinations during warm days of summer and autumn, I would tend to think that I may fall into the same crowd had I not live in here in Alberta. Surely, there are many amazing places we’re blessed with in our province and literally just in our backyard. I met people on many of my adventures from different countries who would pay premium accommodations and book well in advance. I have been in Banff and Lake Louise many times in different time of year but I never run out of places and trails to explore. I could be trekking the same trail in the summer but winter present a much different challenges and its own appeal. Snowshoeing is one of my favorite activities on my mountain adventures, it allows me to explore the river system and access to ice falls only possible when frozen solid, it gives a totally different excitement. I could be walking for several miles in the middle of ice lakes where no other footsteps but the fresh tracks of my snowshoes and occasional paw prints of moose and other wild animals; from here, I get to see unique perspective of surrounding mountain ranges I came to embrace. I never have to worry running out of water as I can grab a hand full of snow to quench my thirst.

The two main destinations of the park My trip to the Rockies this weekend was a mix of adventure at Lake Louise and pampering at Fairmont Banff Springs. Although I was just at Lake Louise a couple of weeks ago; my trip this time was more of just relaxation and nothing strenuous hike or anything which involve heavy physical pursuits, after all I wouldn’t mind relaxing

and fine dining once in a while. The temperature in the city when I left in the morning was -18°C but as I arrived in Lake Louise it was balmy -7°C when I started walking and it had gotten warmer as the day wears on. I only wore light shirt but ski pants on just in case I find something interesting to take pictures of and had to go deeper in the snow. I walked right in the middle of the frozen lake. It was an easy relaxing 10 km walk along the lake and on some elevated trails around leading to Victoria Glaciers. It was invigorating to walk through to fresh powder from heavy snow fall the night before. Driving was a bit of a challenge, the massive snow fall two days prior was still evident on the road; muddy on some areas and black ice on others, but nice and easy and not rushing does the trick of getting to the destination safely. As I arrived at the hotel, I was greeted royally by personnel addressing me with my full name at the door offering valet service and immediately asserting me that my room was ready, by far is the only place I’ve ever stayed at where they have all the logistics of your arrival figured out. The direction to my room was rather confusing; it seemed I need a GPS to get there. It was perfect friendly and professional, perhaps being on a president’s club has its perks.

After I settled in, I explored the amenities; there were a few restaurants and gift shops but I was more interested to see the resident artist and had a chat as he executed fine details with his large painting. The hot pool outside the building was surely a treat on a cold day as long as you don’t mind freezy hair. The Olympic size pool was great to get some workout before jumping in to the hot tub to relax. Hunger started to set in and the experience wouldn’t be complete without checking out the restaurants. Unfortunately, for most requires a reservation so I just settled on casual dining - beer and pizza. It was a fine cold morning as I left the hotel to head to town for a little walk-around and visit to art galleries. The town was busy with people walking up and down on just one of the sidewalks. The other side of the street is currently going through major renovation from the devastating fire on December 29 that gutted out the roof of Mount Royal Hotel causing it to close the sidewalks and temporary closure of the tenants. Spring is just around the corner and expected completion will be just in time perhaps the busiest time considering free access to the park as Canada’s National Parks celebrates its 150 years.

CPBC Inter-City Tournament Tata “Tatsky” Gascon WRITER

While many other sports out there are more appealing to some, the games of Basketball and Volleyball captured the Filipinos sentiments in many more ways than the others. Basketball may not be the National Sports of the island of the Philippines, but it has seized the hearts of our “kababayans” since time immemorial. The

historical Crispa vs. Toyota, until Ginebra vs. San Miguel Beer era were only few of the highlights and most well-known to the many whose enthusiasm to the athletic game is undeniably outstanding. Then there goes Volleyball. It may not seem to have the same spotlight as basketball, but this game is classic on its own and holds a different level of interests to many. Most appealing to women, this one boasts of high intensity

when men steps in the court and play with great agility and strength. The set and spike motion involves concentration and superb timing. On May 21 and 22, the Calgary Filipino athletes of these two great sports will collide with their kind who will be representing the various cities and towns around Calgary and Alberta. They shall share the courts of the Featured Gymnasium at the Genesis Centre in the NE. A must see for all to enjoy the long weekend Victoria Day.-EDR

Wheel Alignment Manny Perez WRITER

Notice most service garage or repair shop recommend wheel alignment or alignment check? Not because they just want you to spend extra money on unnecessary repair. Notice your vehicle pull to one side on straight road? Or fuel economy went down lately? Many of us don’t realize the importance of proper wheel alignment on our cars. We tend to think that nothing much happens to our tires other than an occasional puncture. Nothing can be further from the truth. It is very important that we regularly get our wheels aligned, and some say it should be done as often as

W

we get the car serviced. Wheel alignment is making sure that the wheels of the car are perpendicular to the road; also, it makes sure that the wheels are parallel to one other.

Save Fuel When the wheels of the car are not aligned there is uneven pressure on the tires. They tend to push against each other. When that happens the car faces uneven friction and much more resistance from the road surface. This means that your car has to work that much harder to move forward and more fuel is burned than normal. When you align the wheels properly the there is much less resistance

from the road surface. This results in not only a smoother drive but sometimes noticeable savings on your gas.

Safety

It is very important to consider the safety factor too. Have you ever driven a car which pulls itself to one side all the time? This is due to faulty wheel alignment. You probably know how difficult it is to drive on a wet or iced road even with perfectly aligned wheels. With badly aligned wheels, you are taking on unneccessary risk. Is it worth having an accident and endangering the lives of loved ones? A little money spent once in a while getting your wheels aligned can bring you peace of mind.

Cost Of New Tires WIKIBOOKS

Tire Codes The ISO Metric tire code consists of a string of letters and numbers, as follows: An optional letter (or letters) indicating the intended use or vehicle class for the tire: P: Passenger Car LT: Light Truck ST: Special Trailer T: Temporary (restricted usage for “space-saver” spare wheels) P indicates that the tire is engineered to TRA standards, and absence of a letter indicates that the tire is engineered to ETRTO standards. In practice, the standards of the two organizations have evolved together and are fairly interchangeable, but not fully, since the Load Index will be different for the same size tire.[5] 3-digit number: The “nominal section width” of the tire in millimeters; the widest point from both outer edges (side wall to side wall). The tire surface that touches the road usually has smaller width. /: Slash character for character separation. 2- or 3-digit number: The “aspect ratio” of the sidewall height as a percentage of the nominal section width of the tire. If the information is omitted, it is assumed to be 82% (if written, it should be like xxx/82). If the number is larger than 200, then this is the diameter of the entire

tire in millimeters. An optional letter indicating construction of the fabric carcass of the tire: B: bias belt (where the sidewalls are the same material as the tread, leading to a rigid ride) D: diagonal R: radial if omitted, then it is a cross-ply tire 1- or 2-digit number: Diameter in inches of the wheel that the tires are designed to fit. There is the rare exception of metric-diameter tires, such as the use of the 390 size, which in this case would indicate a wheel of 390 mm in diameter. Few tires are made to this size currently. The number may be longer where a half-inch size is used, for example many heavy transport trucks now use 22.5-inch tires. 2- or 3-digit number: Load index; see table below. Some light-truck tires are approved for “dual use”, that is they can be run in pairs next to each other. If so, separate load indexes will be specified for single and dual usage. In the example shown in the lighttruck tire illustration, the tire has a load index of 114 if used as a single tire, and a load index of 111 if used in a dual pair. [8] Tires without this designation are unsafe for dual usage.

The importance of proper wheel alignment cannot be more emphasized when we compare the cost of brand new tires to the little amount spent on getting them aligned. More resistance to the road surface means more pressure on the rubber of your tires. That leads to

very quick wear and tear on the tires. It results in the tire becoming bald on one side. This means that the tires are uneven. Not only is it dangerous to drive on uneven tires, it also means that you have to spend on new tires sooner. Many of us think that everything is covered in the warranty of the tire manufacturer. Take the time to read the fine print. No warranty is extended if the tires are kept in shoddy condition. This is not a manufacturing defect; it is due to poor maintenance of the tires on our part, and it is not fair to hold them responsible.

Strain On The Car

Having a car with badly aligned wheels also leads to other connected problems. Your brake shaft does not work to optimal levels. The tendency to pull to one side due to uneven tires causes problems in the steering system. It also leads to uneven braking. Improper wheel alignments or not having your wheels aligned will affect the suspension of your car. The suspension in a car is

made up of complicated and delicately balanced parts, and it is important that it should be perfect, and not to mention that changing any suspension parts could cost a lot.

When Should You Get Your Wheels Aligned?

If you find that when your steering is pointing straight forward and the car veers to the right or left, that is an indicator of a necessary wheel alignment. Another indicator is when you find that one tire is worn more than another. Most manufacture recommend every 20k to 30k or 6 months, whichever is earlier. You should also get your wheels aligned or at least checked by a professional if you have hit something large enough to cause alignment issues. If you are not sure in regards to the repair , ask your service advisor. Note that wheel alignment is not the same as wheel balancing. Many people think that both are the same. Many tire retailers will tell you that they are the same thing. Wheel balancing is simply adjusting the balance between the tire and the rim. It is important not to get confused between the two.

Pacquiao defends own spiritual renewal MANILA, March 8 (PNA) -- Sen. Manny Pacquiao on Tuesday took the Senate floor to defend his spiritual renewal following criticism he received after mentioning it in a previous Senate inquiry. “For the record, I did not become a saint after my spiritual renewal,” Pacquiao, known for quoting the Bible, said in response to the privilege speech of colleague Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV. Trillanes cited the spiritual renewal of retired cop and self-confessed Davao Death Squad (DDS) head SP03 Arturo Lascañas as an example of how a person having went through the act did not mean a person became a “saint.” In a Senate hearing on Monday, Pacquiao reprimanded Lascañas for claiming that it was “spiritual renewal” that led him admit the existence of a death squad. On October 2016, Lascañas denied the existence of a death squad but retracted his testimony on February 20 claiming that he lied and that the death squad was real. Lascañas claimed that he underwent spiritual renewal in July 2015 but later lied to in a Senate hearing over a year later.

Pacquiao said that if he indeed underwent spiritual renewal, it must mean that he had changed completely. Trillanes later apologized to Pacquiao if he had offended him, noting that his statement was not directed at him. In response, Pacquiao acknowledged that many people doubted the sincerity of his spiritual renewal but noted that it was his responsibility to prove it. “Sa totoo lang marami ang nagduda at hindi naniwala sa akin noon. Pero responsibilidad ko na patunayan na totoo ang pagbabago sa buhay ko. Dahil sa spiritual renewal, iniiwasan ko ang gumawa ng kasalanan (The truth is, there are many who doubted and did not believe me before. But it is my responsibility to prove that the change in my life is real. Because of spiritual renewal, I try to avoid committing sin),” Pacquiao said. “As much as possible I’m avoiding to commit sins deliberately because I have Jesus in my life. Madaling sabihin na nagbago ka na, pero responsibilidad mo na patunayan na tunay ang iyong pagbabago (It is easy to say that you have changed, but it is your responsibility to prove that the change is

true),” he added. Pacquiao said that he respected Trillanes’ opinion noting that it was his right. At the same time, he reminded his colleague of the primary duty of the Senate. “It is good to be reminded that our primary role is to legislate, and when we conduct hearings or investigations, they should always be in aid of legislation,” Pacquiao said. Pacquiao disagreed with Trillanes’ claim that some senators imposed their morals of Lascañas and noted that they were merely doing his job. “The senate as an institution deserves to be treated with honor and respect. We have rules and we have standards. As an institution, we expect our resource persons, in whatever senate inquiry, to uphold their oath: to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” he said. Pacquiao, meanwhile, said that he is working to do what is “right and just” for the country. The neophyte senator was born a Catholic but is now a Born-again Christian. He has mentioned several times that his change in faith has changed him into becoming a better person. (PNA) JBP/ANP

Philippines Completes Fourth Season of Winter Escapade 14 Feb. 2017, Manila – The Philippines’ trademark sunshine and timeless hospitality greeted Canadian snowbirds once again as they arrived for the Winter Escapade tour held from 6 to 14 February 2017. Originally conceptualized by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Tourism and the Tourism Promotions Board in 2012, the tour entered its fourth season by bringing two hundred and forty-five Filipino and Canadian tourists from Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Quebec to Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, and Coron, Palawan. A delegation from the USA also joined the tour. The first Winter Escapade was conducted in 2013, bringing more than two hundred tourists to Aklan, Iloilo, Guimaras and Manila. Since then, the tour has been conducted every year, visiting Bohol, Siquijor, Negros Oriental, Albay, Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, and Palawan. “Winter Escapade has always sought to provide Canadians and Filipinos a respite from winter,” says Philippine Ambassador to Canada Petronila P. Garcia. “What better way to spend Canada’s winter than basking in the Phil-

ippine sun and immersing oneself in Philippine culture, cuisine, and natural wonders?” This year, Winter Escapade opened with the traditional wreath-laying ceremony at Rizal Park and a running tour of Intramuros and the Bangko Sentral Money Museum. The tourists were then treated to a welcome dinner hosted by Western Union, where multi-awarded Filipino violinist Jake Gacang brought the house down with his show-stopping renditions of contemporary favorites. The participants’ itinerary in the Ilocos region began with a welcome dinner hosted by Governor Imee Marcos at the historic Paoay Church compound. Their stay in Ilocos featured iconic Spanish colonial churches, ancestral homes, and local sites featuring age-old Ilocano crafts that have endured through the centuries. Participants also swam in the blue waters of Pagudpud, walked the cobblestone streets of UNESCO World Heritage Site Vigan, and partook of the famous Ilocano empanada, bagnet and longganisa. A detour to Palawan, consistently voted as one of the best islands in the world, was a must for the Winter Escapade partici-

pants. This year’s participants soaked up Coron’s Maquinit Hot Springs, one of the few salt water hot springs in the world, hopped across the islands and swam amongst Palawan’s corals and other sea life. The Tourism Promotions Board also hosted a formal dinner for the participants midway through the tour. Renditions of musical classics through time by the Ryan Cayabyab Singers and a fashion show featuring Mindanao fabrics conceptualized and created by veteran couture designer Renée Salud, set with a backdrop of perfectly executed Mindanao dances by Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild, elicited rousing ovations from the audience. “We wish to thank the Tourism Promotions Board, Department of Foreign Affairs, Department of Tourism, our tour handler Rajah Tours, project partner Western Union, Local Government Units (LGUs) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) for their work in making this tour possible,” Ambassador Garcia stated. “And we thank our participants for joining us as we discover more of the Philippines.” (Source:DFA Office of the Philippines)

H-1B Workers Look to Canada After U.S. Suspends Fast-Track Visa Processing United States administration is temporarily suspending the expedited processing of H-1Bvisas, a popular work visa that helps U.S. companies hire skilled international workers. In response, companies in Canada — particularly in the technology sector — have issued a rallying cry for these workers to join the Canadian labour market instead, either as workers or as new permanent residents. Fortunately for these companies and workers, the government of Canada offers a range of pathways for workers and their families to come to Canada. H1-B visa changes Under the current U.S. system, companies submitting applications for H-1B visas for potential employees can pay $1,225 USD extra for expedited “premium” processing, a move that guarantees a response from US Citizenship and Immigration Services within 15 days or the fee is refunded. Non-premium applications typically take three to six months to process. However, as of April 3 this option will no longer be available for a period lasting up to six months. U.S. President Donald Trump has gone on record denouncing the H-1B system, both before and after his election to office, as being “bad for [American] workers.” H-1B visas are allocated by lottery after a submission period, and the number of applicants has increased over recent years. Last year, the demand for visas was three times greater than the annual quota. The contrast with Canada On March 9, the government of Canada announcedthat it will soon facilitate a two-week processing time standard for certain skilled foreign nationals looking to work in Canada. The new Global Talent Stream of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program is scheduled to be operational as of June 12, 2017. With this initiative, which forms part of an overarching Global Skills Strategy, companies in Canada will be able to bring in highly-skilled international workers quickly and efficiently. The tech sector in particular is expected to benefit significantly. According to the Information and Communications Technology Council, Canada may need an additional 200,000 information, technology, and communications workers by 2020.

Among other aims, the Global Skills Strategy aims to alleviate those labour shortages over the coming years. Speaking at the announcement of this strategy, Canada’s Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, Navdeep Bains, said that “Canada continues to compete in a global innovation race. As technologies become more widely available to everyone, the only competitive edge for countries and businesses is the distinctive talent and creativity of their people. While skilled immigrants are now identifying Canada as a country of choice in which to apply their knowledge and ideas, we also need to prepare our homegrown talent for a rapidly changing job market.” Aside from this new initiative, and in contrast to the H-1B system, employer-specific work permits in Canada are not doled out through a lottery. Instead, employers and workers can submit the necessary documentation in the knowledge that the application will be assessed on its own merit. Permanent immigration to Canada Although there has always been a steady flow of new permanent residents coming to Canada from the U.S., there has been a clear increase in the overall level of interest in Canada’s permanent immigration programs among U.S. residents over recent months. This may be attributed to a range of factors, including political, social, and economic changes that have taken place. Consequently, foreign workers in the U.S. on H-1B visas — as well as individuals who were hoping to obtain such a visa, but who are now less confident — may look to Canada as an alternative destination. H-1B workers are typically well educated and, by virtue of having worked in the U.S., have usually developed or mastered their English ability and added skilled work experience to their resume. Many H-1B holders also work with large multinationals that have brand awareness in Canada, a factor that may enhance their ability to land gainful employment in the country. In addition, many are in their twenties to mid-thirties. These factors can be richly rewarded across Canada’s economic immigration programs. Take, for example, a single 30 year-old H-1B visa holder with advanced

English ability, a Bachelor’s Degree, and three years of work experience. This person would be eligible to enter Canada’s Express Entry immigration system through the Federal Skilled Worker Class. In this system, he or she would be awarded 436 Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS)points. In the most recent draw from the Express Entry pool of candidates, this would have been enough points for such a candidate to be awarded an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Canadian permanent residence. Similarly, a 35-year old with a Master’s Degree, three or more years of work experience, and initial advanced English ability would have been in line to receive an ITA in the most recent draw. A job offer is not required in order for a worker to immigrate to Canada through Express Entry, but such an offer is rewarded with additional points. For example, a 42 year-old with a Master’s Degree, initial advanced English ability, five years of work experience, and a qualifying job offer from a Canadian employer would also have been invited to apply in the March 1 draw. Workers with a spouse or common-law partner may also immigrate to Canada. Take a 38 year-old with a Master’s Degree, five years of foreign work experience, and advanced language ability, who has a 45-year old spouse with a Bachelor’s Degree and advanced English ability. Even without a qualifying job offer or a nomination from a province, this couple would have been invited to apply in the most recent draw. In effect, H-1B holders like these could quite feasibly be living and working in Canada before the end of 2017, because the government of Canada expedites the processing of applications through this system. There are also other pathways to Canadian permanent residence, for example through one of the Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Canadian provinces and territories (roughly analogous to states in the U.S.) can nominate individuals for permanent residence based on provincial labour market needs through the PNPs. Many, though not all, PNP streams place an emphasis on obtaining a job offer from an employer. H1-B holders, as well as other individuals with work or study experience in the United States, are often highly valued by employers across Canada, as they have already provcontinued on page 17

Healthy Food

DF

Benjamin Tamayo CONTRIBUTOR

Fruits are one of the most important parts of a balanced diet, and it should be your number one priority when you want to reduce belly fat. However, no food can make you lose weight only from your belly, instead of all over your body, so there is no such thing as spot reduction. Naturally some fruits have many nutritional benefits which help with fat loss. I mentioned on my last written blog last month that I would write another article about foods to eat that aids in fat reduction as a follow up from my last article about foods not to eat or avoid so here it is.

Berries

Berries offer a lot of nutrients that will help you lose weight, they are very rich in dietary fiber, a special type of carbohydrates. Fiber helps you fill up after a meal, therefore making you feel satisfied without boosting your calorie intake. By

simply having a diet rich in fiber is enough to lose significant weight. So, if you want to lose weight, berries should be your number one choice!

Apples

You can call apples your weight-loss-friendly fruit. Researches have shown that apples are linked to a lower risk of obesity! Apples also come in high dietary fiber and even more fiber if you leave the skin on! A large apple with skin has twice the fiber than the amount of fiber a skinned apple has. Being so easy to carry apples, you can always have one in your bag! That way, you’ll always have a healthy snack.

Oranges and Citrus

Citrus fruits are incredibly high in vitamin C. Most fruits have vitamin C but citrus fruits have rich sources. Enough vitamin C can trigger fat loss as it plays a role in fat burning when you work out. One large orange has 165% of the vitamin C value you need per day. Even smaller citrus fruits have a signifi-

Life, liberty, and the pursuit of the Canadian Dream Last month, the widely-respected commentator Scott Gilmore wrote an essay for Maclean’s magazine titled ‘The American Dream has moved to Canada‘, noting that: ‘Where do you go now for “Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness”? Every aspect of the American dream is now more easily found in Canada. In the United States, 46 per cent of the population has been able to obtain a college degree — in Canada it’s 59 per cent . . . You are more likely to afford a house with a white picket fence in Canada, where home ownership rates are five per cent higher. Canadi-

Protein

Protein intake is like a perfect long-term strategy in order to lose belly fat. If you want to lose weight, adding protein to your diet is one effective way to lose fat. Moreover, not only it will help you lose fat but if you ever decide to abandon your weight loss efforts, it can help you re-gain your weight! There have also been researches which show that protein is particularly effective against belly fat. Be careful on how you cook your protein though make sure have it with less oil and less salt. In conclusion, if you want to reduce your belly fat, these are the foods you should add to your diet to help with your fat loss exercise regimen. They have high nutritional benefits that can make your body very healthy! By having one of each a day, you can easily get all the nutrition you need for the whole day!

H-1B Workers Look to Canada ans also have more time to enjoy their homes, as they work over 80 hours fewer per year — and they take an extra three days’ vacation . . . By virtually every measure, Canada has surpassed the United States as the shining city on the hill, where everyone is safe to reach their potential. And people around the world have begun to notice.’ Residents of Canada also have less personal debt, greater social mobility, and can enjoy a political and social climate that, by any yardstick, is more conciliatory and respectful than in the U.S. “There is a significant increase of foreign nationals in the U.S. who are looking to Canada – people currently on H-1B visas, from countries like India,” says Attorney David Cohen.

Now this pathway may be more difficult to navigate, and even if it is navigable, the rewards may not be as rewarding as what they may have been once upon a time. “Fortunately for these foreign nationals, the North American Dream is very much alive . . . in Canada. Adding turmeric into your regular diet can potentially reverse specific symptoms and diseases Turmeric. A perennial plant of the ginger root family and is native to southern Asian countries, is one of my favorite spices. There are many recipes that you can find over the web on how to use turmeric. One way we Filipinos use turmeric is in our afritada balensyana, but did you know that you can make a latte out of it? I highly recommend it. Not just because it tastes quite delicious, but because of it’s many anti-inflammatory properties. The research behind turmeric is quite extensive. According to Dr. Josh Axe from Food Is Medecine, www.draxe.com1, adding turmeric into your regular diet can potentially reverse specific symptoms and diseases (potentially is the key word). In retrospect, you should use turmeric as a preventative rather than thinking of it as a miracle powder. Here is just some of the amazing things it does for your body, if used in food and in drinks on a regular basis: • anti-inflammatory (arthritis, high cholesterol, chronic pain, cancer and ulcers are all a result of inflammation)

Golden Turmeric Latte Recipe type: drink, beverage Cook time: 5-10 mins Total time: 5-10 mins Serves: 1 INGREDIENTS * ½ teaspoon ground turmeric * 1 cup almond milk * ½ cup full fat canned coconut milk (or you can use 1 tablespoon grass fed butter if you do dairy-- or grass fed ghee) * ½ teaspoon vanilla extract * 1 tablespoon MCT oil * 1 tablespoon honey * Pinch of sea salt (optional) * Pinch of ground cinnamon * Pinch of black pepper, nutmeg, cardamom - all optional PROCEDURE Combine all ingredients, except honey, in a medium hot saucepan and gently warm ingredients while stirring with a spoon to combine. Carefully transfer hot liquid into a blender, tightly seal lid. Blend in your Vitamix until frothy, about 30 seconds. Serve hot and immediately drink. MCT oil is the main ingredient that helps this become super creamy, frothy, and adds heaps

A couple answers to questions I’m anticipating with this one: 1) What is MCT oil? It is a Medium-chain Triglyceride . It is comprised of primarily caprylic and capric fatty acids, and is a light-yellow, odorless, translucent liquid at room temperature. MCT oil occurs naturally in coconut oil and other foods. It has been used to add calories to infant formulas and many nutritionists, healthy gurus and athletes swear by it. MCTs are absorbed into the bloodstream, they bypass the digestion process that longer chain fats go through. MCT’s provide quick energy for the body and are less likely to be stored in the fat cells. When a meal or drink includes medium chain triglycerides, there is a significant increase in the number of calories burned (thermogenic effect). When more calories are used, fewer are stored as fat, which helps to reduce body fat levels. 2) Do I need MCT oil? Yes I highly recommend using MCT oil to get the best nutrition and culinary benefits out of this recipe, 3) Does it taste good? MCT is tasteless and odourless. When added with the elevated golden latte, yes, it tastes amazing!

The Theology of Water I nodded and our Fr. Edmund Vargas COLUMNIST

The biblical imagery of water is best summarized by the formula for the blessing of the water for baptism: “At the dawn of creation your Spirit breathed on the waters, making them the wellspring of all holiness. The waters of the great flood You made the sign of the waters of baptism that make an end of sin and a new beginning of goodness. Through the waters of the Red Sea, you led Israel out of slavery to be an image of God’s holy people, set free from sin by baptism. In the waters of the Jordan, You Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Spirit. Your Son willed that water and blood should flow from His side as he hung upon the cross…”

The Old Testament thirst for the living water comes to fulfillment with the coming of Christ, the Messiah. In Christ, as St Paul says in his letter to the Romans, “God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.” In our gospel today, Jesus refers to this outpouring of God’s love as He tells the Samaritan woman at the Jacob’s well in Sychar: “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but those who drink of the water that I will give then will never be thirsty. The water that I will give will become in them a spring of water gushing up to eternal life.” As Jesus said to her in a friendly and gentle tone: “Give me a drink!” The Samaritan woman sensed, deep down in her heart that something broken was beginning to mend. For the first time in her life,

she discovered through Jesus what she had always secretly thirsted for: living water gushing up to eternal life. As we gather to worship, we begin by touching the water from font. This ordinary element of nature has transformed us into God’s people. Baptism with water becomes the sacrament of our redemption. Making the sign of the cross with the water reminds us of our common stature as God’s children. Whenever we touch the water, we recognize the truth that we have been restore into God’s image and likeness, that we proclaim one faith, that we believe one Lord and that we are one people. This season of Lent actually speaks of this thirst of the human spirit. Lent is a journey of the soul through the desert into the living water of Christ’s resurrection.

March Horoscope The Aries: The Sun will make a return to your natal Sun and refill your batteries, but your sign’s ruler will run off to Taurus making your energy drop, turning focus to financial issues that trouble you, instead of creative work The Taurus: Encountering problems, one by one, this is the month when you could resolve many, so be prepared to return to a place of safety and confidence in Pisces once April begins. Clear things up, however hard it might get. You don’t have to create distance as soon as you face difficulties, and a healthy conflict might do you good. The Gemini: Social life will be rich and filled with new experiences, surprises that will put a smile on your face, and romantic possibilities. Have some fun, go out and dance, forming a strong basis for the next month when all of your thoughts will have a chance to be materialized and brought down to Earth. The Cancer: Take bold steps and make room for spontaneity in your life. Career or life goals you had will turn out to be a bit different than you imagined. Ask yourself if you are on the right path, regroup, and prepare yourself for one more chase on personal achievements you wish for.. The Leo: Venus and the Sun will cross paths in Aries, making all sorts of new relationships and romantic involvements possible, especially in lives of

single Leo representatives who have decided to open their hearts for love. The battle for emotional clarity and awareness will continue, and you will have a chance to set your target high and reach for your dreams. The Virgo: Rely on your senses for help and they will carry you towards new beginnings, giving you all the energy you need by the end of March. The beginning of spring will make you impatient, quick to think and to judge, and push you straight into a much needed change of direction and pace. The Libra: With so many words unspoken and matters that weren’t resolved in time, you will be challenged to stay in conflict throughout the entire month. Luckily, this will feed you with energy and initiative, and you will have all the right tools to make things functional and working again. Use this time to get ahead, fight for career advancement, and be the one to fix what was broken in the past. The Scorpio: Mars will already be in your seventh house, triggering misunderstandings. You could be tempted to start a partnership, but this should be done only if you have absolute trust in the person standing in front of you. Turned to matters of relationships, the end of March will be the time when many Scorpios will decide to set free from dysfunctional bonds.

The Sagittarius: Your ego should be just fine and you will feel constructive and focused on yourself, with the ability to make your goals happen and your plans develop as you imagined they would.Changes in your life were needed to lead you to this point in time, and even if you feel unhappy or unable to advance at this time, you know that tomorrow will bring good things your way. The Capricorn: If you start digging into your family tree, ready to discover the pathways of your ancestors, who knows what you might find along the way? Don’t go too far from yourself though, for emotions you face in March will have to be resolved no matter how hard you might try to run into the past. The Aquarius: Thinking about your past choices, all of the beauty in life will seem to be there for the taking. You should really use every opportunity you get to make yourself feel beautiful, work on your state of satisfaction and choose hedonistic pleasures and rest over hard labor and difficult relationships. The Pisces: Disappointments might be inevitable, but they do lead you on a path to a better understanding of the world and the future you are able to create. Take matters into your hands, show initiative and strength, and there is no reason for you not to succeed in anything you wish to accomplish at this time.

My nose started to run when I opened my car door and met the cold on a Thursday night in February. One of the strip malls in South East Calgary held a meet and greet for a couple of Manila-based entertainers. But the wait tested everyone’s patience (especially guests who arrived extra early), as the singers’ plane was delayed for some hours. It was slowly becoming standing space only, but still a jovial place to be that chilly evening. The sound of empty growling stomachs reverberated throughout the room. Eyes focused intently on the food trays being prepared and brought out. Once the tables were deemed good to go, everyone was advised to line up for the buffet. At this point, the famous guests would have to eat later. The great food and background music quickly livened the shindig. The superb dinner elicited smiles and sighs of relief. Everyone enjoyed the spir-

it of consumption. From burps and chats to constant phone scrolling, it was a busy sight. And late comers hesitant to merge in the crowd were politely led by the host to a table away from the rest. Moments later, a voice in the room announced (in approx. 10 minutes) the arrival of the guests. Finally, the entourage arrived 20 minutes after the announcement. Fresh from the cold, the entertainers gasped for warm air. Lips yawed and shivered, too. After finally acclimatizing, they proceeded to the buffet table, but were denied access to the goods and courteously told to go back and stay put at their table. They were treated like hungry royals. However, the amount of food they consumed was just tip of the ice berg. Minutes in the midst of meet and greet, from the back of the room came these young personalities in sash and crowns. Like peacocks and chameleon,

they walked down the aisle towards the guests’ table. My appreciation turned to confusion. Did I eat too much and wound up in a different event?! But, no! I tried to make sense the connection between the invited performers and these folks with Mr and Ms. Titles. Possibly the idea was conceived with no regard to consequence. However, these title holders were over promoting themselves to the point of ridicule. Their time in the limelight was obviously long gone. I thought to myself, why not let the actual initially invited visitors savour their stay, time, and limelight in Calgary? Wasn’t the meet and greet for these strangers anyway? Across from my table a colleague stooped over and whispered, “It’s a trend to see this kind of self-promotion in most of the events in our community, eh?”. I nodded and our eyebrows arched.

Pagyamanin mo kung anong meron ka at huwag kang mainggit sa kung anong meron ang iba...... Dear Madame KC, I am a single mom with a 15yr old daughter. I’m 36yrs old, 5’2 and 250lbs. Feeling down right now and need someone to comfort me. I need to feel how to be loved. To me happy ending just happen in movies, pocketbooks and romance series. Paano ba mahalin ang sarili? Lonely lang ako siguro kasi pare-pareho ang mga ginagawa ko araw-araw. Para may magtext sa akin dapat ako muna ang magtext. Nagplaplano akong pumunta sa US para makita ulit si EX (he is married but separated) and ask him to make plans pero wala akong excitement from him na nakikita. I think, I should just stop it.

I feel so alone. Kahit anong gawin kong busy sa sarili ay bigla na lang ako nalulungkot. Siguro nga destiny ko na maging mag-isa. Wala naman kasing magkakagusto sa itsura ko, picky ang mga guys. Karamihan sa kanila gusto yung madidisplay nila at the same time housewife material. Gusto ko man pumayat pero hirap na ako... God Bless, AnMari Dearest Anmari, Ang pagmamahal ay nagmumula sa ating sarili. Paano ka nila mamahalin kung ang sarili mo ay hindi mo kayang mahalin. Be proud of who you are. Sigurado akong may katangian ka na

wala ang iba. Walang pinanganak na perfect. Just be yourself and don’t pretend to be someone you’re not. Kasi hindi ka magiging masaya. Love and your own happiness does not depend on others. Siguro nga happy ending does not exist, because life is a struggle. Para makuha natin ang mga bagay na gusto natin, kailangan itong paghirapan. Parang love din yan, para mahalin ka ng iba, mahalin mo muna ang sarili mo. Kasi kung marami kanang pamamahal then i’ts time to share it.

You deserve more, even better than tira-tira. If you love yourself you won’t settle for less, hindi mo hahayaan na nasasaktan ka. That’s not love, stop searching for love, it will come if it is meant to be. Huwag mo i-torture ang sarili mo. You must love yourself before you love another. By accepting yourself and fully being what you are, your simple presence can make others happy. And remember, God loves you. Madame KC

Wear Pink Shirt Fashion Trends and Stand Up Against Bullying Lifestyle

Marietta Pangan-Dutkoski ASST EDITOR IN-CHIEF

Marife Cocjin Magnolia Magazine WRITER/BLOGGER

If you’ve visited the malls and the local fashion boutiques in Calgary, you’ve probably noticed that they already have their Spring 2017 styles in. If you’ve been paying attention to some of the trends that are making its way to the window fronts of some of the more fashion forward brands, you’ll see a plethora of Trends for Spring - some that have carried over from the previous spring year and some that are new. Here are just some of the things that you’ll see come Spring 2017. Watch out, it looks like the 90s is back. 1. Ruffles & dramatic sleeves - Ruffles and dramatic bell sleeves, or ruffled bell sleeve, or ruffles all over your top and skirt. It’s back. Marques’ Almeida, seen in the picture (#1.) shows that wearing ruffled bell sleeves with a ruffled hem skirt still looks tasteful and not dramatically overwhelming. It’s just a matter of balancing out the look. 2. Applique, embroi-

dered & patchwork - A.V. Robertson and Dolce & Gabbana are leading in the applique trend. Seen mostly used on mesh, see through and richly delicate fabrics; a romantic trend and one of the prettiest for the season. You will see this in formal wear, evening wear and in lingerie type body-suits. 3. Baby purses - this trend has passed over from last year. Remember when it first came out and we were buying these baby purses for our daughters and nieces? If they still have it, you can just ask to borrow it! This Hindmarch purse comes in all shapes. Coach, Kate Spade, Tory and Ted Baker also all have baby purses that you might like. 4. Dramatic off Shoulder - The off shoulder and one shoulder look has been modified. They’ve been dramatically emphasized with ruffles or are layered. It’s quite beautiful. You’ll see this trend stand out in brands like Self Portrait. 5. Embroidered patches on Denim & Personalized Art - This trend stands out to me the most because I was a

90s child. Throwing it back to the 90’s and early 2000’s where embroidered jeans, blouses and pants with “carefully” placed patchwork were on trend. If you’ve got ripped jeans, you can now patch it up with an embroidered rose. Dolce & Gabbana is one of the designers that is really leading the trend on this for Spring 2017. 6. Clunky heels & square toes - clunky heels will make for better stability (as stable as you can be on 4 inches) and square toes mean you won’t have to worry about scuffing the tip of your shoe on concrete or carpet at the office. This is another 90’s look that has come back. So if you’re a millennial and have the same show size as your mom, now would be a good time to go through your mom’s shoe closet and see if there’s anything in there that might catch your eye. If not, then go on down to Nordstrom or Hudson’s Bay to check out what they have for Spring 2016. Do you have a question on style or are looking for a little help with your wardrobe? Send us a quick email! We’d be happy to help!

Will you be a part of the change? If your answer is yes, then “Wear Pink Shirt” and better yet hashtag “#PinkItForwad”. Since 2007 and every year thereon, the month of February has become synonymous to “Pink Shirt Day” has been one of the several locally and internationally celebrated anti-bullying day campaign. In our city, Boys & Girls Clubs of Calgary (BGCC) an organization who is committed to transforming the lives of vulnerable children and youth in the community has partnered with Genesis Centre for Canada’s 150th celebration to recognize and spread awareness about anti-bullying movements occurring worldwide. The event was held

on February 17th, 2017, from noon to four in the afternoon. BGCC bullying free programs and activities were spread all over the lobby enticing visitors and members of Generis Centre to participate and enjoy games, class room activities, free shirt, free smoothie and live music for all. Wearing Pink Shirt Day emerged in September 2007, after a Nova Scotia high school student was targeted with homophobic insults for wearing a pink shirt to school. This incident compelled the two Grade, 12 students, Travis Price and David Shepherd to organize their schoolmates to wear pink in solidarity. After that protest, wearing pink shirt spread to schools all across Canada and around the world. To date, over 3 Million school children an-

nually have experienced bullying at different levels and over 160 thousands missed classes. According to a new Angus Reid Institute Survey, there are three out of every four Canadian adults admitted being bullied while in school. According to Crys Vincent, Manager for Boys & Girls Club of Calgary, this is their 8th year in bringing Goal Awareness Against Bullying. We want the issues of bullying now at the forefront and make our adults as model kindness. BGCC guests speakers Deputy Mayor Dianne Colley- Urquhart also talks about “ Kindness is one size” while BGCC CEO Jeff Dyer tackles on “ sharpening rough edges” to inspire more youth attenders in participating the anti-bullying campaign.

Savvy Tricks and Tips for Travelers

Alvin Masangakay Francia WRITER

Traveling to Hawaii can be intimidating to some as they think it could be an expensive travel. But thinking of Hawaii and visions of palm-fringed sandy beaches bathed in sunshine usually come to mind. If you know when to travel, you’ll have more cash left in your wallet for other pleasures that depends on what you really wanna do, it could be hiking or simply laying at the shore sun bathing. When you look at Hawaii’s travel seasons, you’ll find the cheapest months during the spring or fall that work best for you. Traveling to Hawaii in the summer is not usually as expensive as during the winter break but you will be dealing with larger crowds and more kids. No matter when you travel to Hawaii, usually with the exception of the Christmas/New Year’s period, there are ways to ensure you get the best deal. Traveling mid-week, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday, usually gives

you the lowest airfares. Monday and Friday are a little higher and weekends are the most expensive. Price is driven by demand and more people tend to travel on weekends. Book your trip as early as possible. The airlines set aside so many seats for the lowest rate. As these are sold, they go to the next highest fare and so on until the flights are sold out. Keep in mind that lower fares typically have more flight restrictions. Plan your iterinary as to what activities you want to do and where do you wanna stay. These two can be a huge factor affecting your budget. Check out free or inexpensive activities that you will enjoy of doing. In Honolulu, Diamond Head Hike was pretty cool. You only have to pay US$1.00 as a visitor’s fee. It’s family-friendly hike, it could take around an hour or two (depending how fast you are) to get to the top and back and at the top of the hike you got to see the Waikiki Beach, a breath taking view of the ocean and the Waikiki skyline. Think outside the

box and try something new. A lot of vendors at the beachside offers surf lessons and wake boarding lessons too. There are quite a few beach volleyball courts as well for public use and across the street from the beach, the Honolulu Zoo is situated for US$14 entrance per person. Hosteling or AirBnB are few less expensive ways to stay in Waikiki area. For as low as roughly US$35 a night with breakfast included, surely you will have some more cash left in your pocket during the entire stay. Waikiki Beachside Hostels is one of the great hostels situated two blocks away from the beach front Waikiki. It offers free breakfast, magnetic bracelet as key to your room which make it safer and a fun friendly environment. Whether you’re going on an off-season or peak-season, make sure to really know what you want. Your happiness and your precious time is worth more than what you will spend to any vacation plans you may have. Make it worthwhile.
