Alberta’s general minimum wage will rise by $1.00 to $12.20 per hour and the current liquor server rate will be abolished effective October 1, 2016. Weekly and monthly minimum wages used by certain professions will rise to $486 and $2,316, respectively, at the same time. Minimum wage will rise a further $1.40 to $13.60 per hour on October 1, 2017, and by $1.40 to $15 per hour on
, 2001, 2002 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012
October 1, 2018. Weekly and monthly rates will rise by equivalent amounts. The province is also scrapping the minimum wage paid to servers, bartenders and others whose main job is to dispense liquor as of October 1. Those workers have traditionally been paid $1 an hour less than minimum wage to compensate for what was accepted to be more money in tips. As of Oct. 1, the gap will be gone completely and liquor servers will receive the same minimum wage as everyone else. Christina Gray, Minister of Labour said the gap needed to be closed because there had been too much variance in tips for liquor servers to make it reliable.“We’re committed to bringing Alberta’s general minimum wage up to $15 per hour to give lower-income Albertans the ability to support their families.”
By 2018, compared to when Premier Rachel Notley took office, the minimum wage will have risen 63 per cent for liquor servers and 47 per cent for everyone else. The Edmonton and Calgary chambers of commerce, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, and the industry group Restaurants Canada have said a steep hike will hurt businesses already dealing with a recession economy and tens of thousands people losing their jobs. The province estimates that 305,000 employed Albertans earn less than $15 an hour, two-thirds of whom are women. Here is what we know about Albertans who make minimum wage (2015/16 statistics):
mum-wage earners (61 per cent) are female. Approximately 43 per cent of minimum-wage earners work full time, and nearly 77 per cent have permanent jobs. Here is what we know about low-income earners in Alberta: Approximately 296,200 Albertans currently earn less than $15 per hour. Over 50 per cent of those earning $15 per hour or less are the heads of households or their spouses. Nearly 37,000 of those earning $15 per hour or less are single earners with children. To learn more, see the Minimum Wage Fact Sheet or the Employment Standards Regulation or the Order in Council.
Alberta will have the highest minimum wage Approximately 59,000 amongst all provinces. Albertans earn minimum The territories -- Nunavut wage. ($13/hour) and the Northwest Territories ($12.50/ The majority of minihour) --remain higher.

Until they accept and believe. EDITORIAL BOARD
One of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is self-esteem. His theory stipulates that “All humans have a need to feel respected; this includes the need to have self-esteem and self-respect. Esteem presents the typical human desire to be accepted and valued by others. People often engage in a profession or hobby to gain recognition. These activities give the person a sense of contribution or value. People with low self-esteem often need respect from others; they may feel the need to seek fame or glory.” (Wikipedia). Alberta’s summer this year saw a mushroom population boom on lawns and fields thanks to the environment’s high moisture
content. In the same token enterprising people and groups (like the fungi cropping up all over the map) continually and constantly implement events related to helping young people build their self-esteem. Case in point is the proliferation of beauty pageants and entertainment shows. All known titles have been identified to satisfy the esteem-building need of both young and old. The real concern, though, is do beauty pageants build lasting self-esteem or self-respect? Winners may inspire many. However, at the same time these pageantries create and perpetuate illusions and misconceptions about true beauty. Is beauty really in the eye of the beholder? To equate beauty with media industry standards is to expose young ones to
more harm. How many people (famous and not) are burdened to the point of self-harm because of society’s overly far-fetched and outrageous expectations everyone is expected to live out? Contestants are made to believe that they are role models for younger generations. Role models for size of waist, skin tone, walk, posture and intelligence? Most of the time, parents make the decision to have their “princesses and princes” engage or not in these widespread showbiz competitions and pageantries, and sponsors and producers are quick to plan and execute these very events. Then there are the people with time and monies to spare who will gladly fill the venue. Although many

of these competitions promote the importance of self-esteem, the outward appearance of competitors seems to outweigh the initial goal of truly realizing one’s potential and worth, leaving audience members, judges and contestants scrutinizing and focusing solely on how to improve externally rather than internally. Evidently, unless our young ones are enlightened about their inherent value or self-worth, no amount of promo-
tion and exposure can equal gaining and/or maintaining a positive self-esteem. Thus, a positive self-perception and esteem is earned not by entry fees, funds raised, weeklong fame, title or tiara. Consequently, until one accepts, believes, and loves who they are internally (emotionally, psychologically, spiritually and intellectually), no amount of participation and self-promotion can lead to real and lasting self-respect.

Cyber Criminals on Facebook Victimizing Thousands of Filipino Women Around the World
(A -Two Part Investigative Report and A True Story by Marietta Pangan) So I thought I would ask again….when will I get a break into investigative reporting? That is definitely one of my wildest dream to write! Well the as how my favourite quote goes… What you think about is what you bring about. It came into surface just a month couple of months ago, back in early in June 2016… big time! I was actually the subject of my own story. Here’s how it goes…. Someone from Facebook was sending me a private message of a casual hello, good morning, how are you and the likes. Next is a long message of so many beautiful adjectives and asking to be my friend etcetera, etcetera…..and the likes. My 1st response: Ignore! 2nd and 3rd time still: Ignore! It was routine and pattern on a week long encounter, the guy seems quite persistent. Co-incidentally during that same time frame, someone that I really know sent me a message to ask for a radio interview, but since we were not yet friends, the message automatically goes filtered messages together with over a dozen more. i curiously probed the person profile and timeline, followed with a message inquiring how he found me as I am certain to have all the security precautions i can imagine in my social media public profile ON. Puzzled of how he still managed to to get into my account. I was informed about “People You May Know” - a valid place to find a person online. Lo and behold, in 2015 & 2016 in my filtered
messages, I discovered that i have had 31 friend requests from all over the world! Odd as it may sound, and unlikely was,at least 13 of them are claiming from London or United Kingdom. Of courseto cross check the validity is from very good friend who is a genuine British National with the accent ( this will come into play later in the story). I was informed, British like Asians and mostly Filipino Women. Okay, I maybe that attractive (really?) So additional probing must go on as totally I wasn’t sold with my friend’s reasoning. So I tested the water and accepted a couple of friend requests from a guy using the pseudo names “ James Borde Philip” London UK and Eric Michael to get into the bottom of why all of the sudden I am quite popular and attractive to UK/ British/London residents?. What I have discovered after almost a month might surprise you but 100%b guaranteed “syndicated cyber criminals” luring and victimizing hundreds upon hundreds of innocent, weak, unassuming and good/kind hearted Filipino Women/Asians to fall in love with them, then remit and send thousands upon thousands of money with their worldwide operation/scams and then vanish in thin air. Therefore, Women Power particularly Filipino Women Power to save and help each other from being victimize further will eradicate this type of crime. By informing proper authorities and not being embarrass (whether you are a victim or not) you are saving innocent others to get victimized.
Furthermore, sharing experiences and education will further equipped other women in handling similar situation to catch more criminals. Proper authorities to contact: Canada: www.rcmp. gc.ca Technical Investigative Services of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police USA: www.ic3.gov of Federal Bureau of Investigations Philippines: Facebook: Cyber Crime Complain Center or contact:09174459295 Here some of APPROACHES/SCRIPTS/ TACTICS these criminals are using to make sure you will fall head over hills for them. 1. Being Single Parent/ Widower/Widow of 3-5 years. Male or Female, Engineer/Contractor/ Businessman. Information is very limited other than these. TRUTH: The Account he/ she is currently using is a STOLEN/FAKE from another profile of an unsuspected victim. He or she is typically using Caucasian/ European/English profile/ cover photo with a child/ children. 2. Lives in United Kingdom (mostly London), Canada, Australia or EU. TRUTH: Person might be from Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, India, Pakistan, Caribbean/Central/South America. You may be able to identify with the accent if he/she will contact you via Messenger/FB. 3. He/She will include lines such as looking for a person that he/ she can share a life with, from years of being a
single parent to become a family once again. TRUTH: Same script being use to every innocent victim. 4. Posing as Rich, Professionals, Overseas Contractors, Educated God Fearing, Very respectful (at the beginning). TRUTH: Very aggressive and arrogant in responding to messages. Take note of their command of English grammar, very poor, will avoid or ignore your questions when you become interrogative in order not reveal the current misleading identities they are using. 5. Using terms of endearments such as my Dear, Love, Hon and other sweet and beautiful adjectives. TRUTH: When you probe,do not be confrontational if you suspect he is scammer. Think thoroughly if you can handle to continue communicating or reciprocating. Thiswill take a lot of consideration to be able to handle. If you will continue , do so however carefully, and very cautiously. I gave my self a month pretending with them on this. 6. Will want to get you into Video / Messenger/Viber Chats and Phone Calls/Patch. TRUTH: They are using frozen Photos, always on black screens, restrive to show their faces and erratic network connections to hide their faces, voices and accents. Thick accents (definitely not Caucasians or European accents) can be trace if you are quite keen in distinguishing it. They are not into long conversation that will lead you to ask them further questions. They will start to be commanding/ demanding and will even drop conversation if you get interrogative. 7. More and more flowery words are now contents of his/her messages to lure you into believing they are madly in love and seriously want to see you, meet you, make you their better half. TRUTH: These are additional manipulative tactics! They will get easily agitated if being probed, if you use their own words to entrap them, they can get short tempered. They will use reverse psychology such as “maybe you don’t love me” “how can you let this happen to me”, “ I thought we are together in this” and other blah! blah! blahs! 8. The Drama: They will
James Borde Philip
Eric Michael
How to find names of possible victims of FB cyber scammers
pretend to be trapped all of the sudden overseas, need help desperately, no family or friends to call for assistance except “YOU”. TRUTH: Pretending to be in dire need of help, but starting to lure you get into sending them cash remittances. Do not fall for this.. If you decided to go the next step, be very prepared. Calculate and anticipate your steps, you can also use flowery responses or excuses, reasons why you are not able to respond timely. Do not go beyond you are capable to handle. Remember, they are CON Professionals, they know what you post and say on your Facebook since you are friends with them, make sure you don’t mislead them way too much…. just enough to get more information. 9. They need “CASH ONLY” immediately to wire or money transfer for food, plane ticket, repair of machines. Their credit card is not working or stolen. TRUTH STOP Believing or sending the $$$ right here! This is THE TRAP! Do not fall for it. If need to probe further, very cautiously ( again do not be confrontational), make convincing excuses for not sending anything (i.e.. you are not well, your credit card is maxed out, you already helped out another relative etc…) Be in control to ask for more pertinent information how and where to send the money, name of the person, country and more before you drop the bomb.
10. Admit they are scammers. TRUTH This is so unlikely to happen however, when they get trapped or felt getting there, they will automatically block you Therefore. before pulling the trigger or drop the bomb, make sure you were able to get their current pseudo name, the names of their friends ( screen shot). There will have no friends to show, however, get around by clicking the like buttons by his/her friends liking their photos. then time to pull the trigger/drop the bomb by using all the words you want to despise them. Fact is, thousands upon thousands of women mostly Filipino women were already victimized according to FBI ,out of innocence/ignorance. Each of us have a social responsibility to help each other not to patronize these heartless syndicates. The only way way you can get back to them is by coming out in the open and be bold enough to inform anyone you know and even those you do not know that might be victimized or already been. “ Note: to be continued…. on the final series, I will share: Different Names Used by Scammers, Tips How to prevent/miimize Cyber Crime, Tips to Inform Friends, Cyber Crime Statistics and Magnitude Worldwide, Government Responses to Cyber Crimes.

Airdrie is only the most recent example of how getting out of the boardroom and into the community gets us real results that work for patients.” Sarah Hoffman, Minister of Health The government and Alberta Health Services have been meeting with local health providers, community leaders and citizens to improve access to urgent health care in Airdrie and area. A plan is being developed to extend current hours at Airdrie Urgent Care to 24-7. This plan will be completed by Sept. 30, with implementation expected early in 2017. “We are pleased to
be moving forward with expanding our hours to provide urgent care in the community 24-7. We know 24-7 health services are an important issue in Airdrie, and we are committed to continuing to partner with the primary care network and the community to deliver health-care services to the greater Airdrie region. Dr. Verna Yiu, President and CEO, Alberta Health Services “This is an exciting day for Airdrie. Access to 24-7 health services within our own City has been a long time coming. This is a good first step in becoming one of Alberta’s healthiest communities. I would like to extend thanks to the Government of Alberta, Alberta Health Services and our community, who have worked together to make this critical access a reality.” Peter Brown, Airdrie mayor “It is imperative that decision makers visit and work with a community
to truly know what the needs of the community are. This announcement is a good first step. I look forward to continuing working with Minister Hoffman and her staff.” Michelle Bates, Chair of Airdrie Health Foundation The government has also used this approach in other communities like Sylvan Lake and Sundre. In fact, Terry Leslie, Sundre mayor, sent the following comments to Minister Hoffman regarding this approach. “Because of your leadership, dedication, willingness to trust, guidance and direction, the concerns presented to you have been heard, and the solutions proposed by the community, have been put in place. This is a shining example of how government should work with Albertans.” Terry Leslie, Sundre (Alberta Health Services Communications)

Travel & Adventure
Epic Journey to the East (Part 1) Angelito de Jesus PHOTOS & TEXT
How’s your summer going? I hope it has been a great one. Summer has always been a great time to explore and discover new places, a great time to enjoy the parks and beaches in Alberta, hiking, picnics and of course bar-b-quing; numerous festivals and outdoor activities, often the only struggle is to decide where to go. My summer 2016 involves many outdoor activities in and out of the city, hiking and scootering with my Vespa throughout the city and other parts of the province; discovering places I’ve never been and revisiting places that I have already been and witnessing all the changes. Eastward from home was where I set in an epic journey - I started the 4,000 km journey through Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan stopping in some historical sites and national parks along the way. First stop was at Medicine Hat, Alberta. If you have never been there, I would encourage taking a weekend drive there. During summer months, there are plenty of activities going on there. One of the major events which will be held this year would be the Medicine Hat cultural days on September 30 - October 2. It’s a three days event celebrating arts and culture. Every time I go there, I always stop at the Saamis Teepee for a break even though I have been there many times. I look for different perspective to photograph this iconic teepee. You cannot miss it; it’s the largest teepee in the world made out of steel and concrete prominently displayed near Highway 1. It was originally constructed for the 1988 Winter Olympics and a tribute to native heritage. Upon crossing Manitoba border, I was interested to a drive-by exploration to the town of Virden. I had passed this town many times from my passed travel along that route and never made an attempt to stop by and explore. This time upon reading some of the business publications that there was an oil boom after the first well was drilled in January 1951. My curiosity peaked in and I wanted to see the town and how it was influenced by the newly found wealth. People moved to
the area for work and the population grew exponentially from the continual growth of the railway and to work in the oilfield. When it was first established in 1883, the main industries were agriculture and manufacturing of farm implements, brick factory and flour mill. Several historical buildings are still operational and the CPR historical center features the events and evolution of the town. Winnipeg “Gateway to the West” Winnipeg has been my home when I first arrived as an immigrant along with my 2 younger brothers and parents. I worked there for many companies but never found one that fit in to my liking or the ideal employer. I left Winnipeg on the fall of 2000 to live in Alberta and to get closer to the mountains for outdoor lifestyle and landscape photography. I always love Winnipeg for its diversity, arts scene, cultural festivals, fishing and of course hot summer months. Renown as the friendliest province; it’s not surprising to meet up with neighbor and strike up a conversation. You can go to the mall any time of day and would always run into someone you know and end up talking. The Forks and its surrounding neighborhood is the center of all things happening in the city. Downtown is nearby as the center of commerce and the home MTS center that hosts big events such as hockey, concerts and conventions. Juno awards of 2014 were held there. Shaw baseball diamond is nearby where they host baseball tournaments. The newly expanded public library is a state of the art facility, the outdoor garden attracts guests to enjoy a relaxing walk around the fish pond and ponder about large public art display called “Emptyfull” Standing 35 feet high and 31 feet wide, the stainless steel frame of a flask-like structure releases fog and rainfall fills in the illuminated tray with primary colours. It symbolizes Winnipeg’s geography which appears large and empty but full of creative energy. Winnipeg has the most wall mural displays I have ever seen anywhere. Many historical buildings are preserved and not torn down like we see in Calgary but they get upgraded and many have external walls painted to the
full length of the buildings showing the visual history of the community and the business itself. It is a common practice for many businesses to operate in the same area for decades. The new Canadian Museum for Human Rights is located right at The Forks. Despite all the controversy surrounding the planning, construction and of course its overblown budget, it is now completed and showcases human sufferings from all kinds of atrocities. Although, we have learned many of the displays through school, books, movies and other literatures but visiting the museum and reading through the display gives a totally different feel. There is certainly an intense emotional connection specially when you can hear and see the life size displays and dioramas. The building is truly an engineering and architectural feat. It reminds me of hiking while going through series of switchbacks to get to the top of the mountain. There are seven levels and each level showcases a particular theme, from the study of human rights to the right of indigenous people, examinations of the holocaust to turnings points and expressions of change. The staircase that leads to the tower gives an aerial perspective of the Red River nearby and the community of St. Boniface. After a couple of hours at the museum, the newly constructed pedestrian bridge Esplanade Riel is surely a site to behold. The spar-stayed cable bridge is used by cyclists, skateboarders, pedestrians to cross-over red river from the community of St. Boniface to downtown. There is a French restaurant Mon Ami Louis (My Friend Louis) at the center of the bridge should anyone delight in haute French cuisine. At the end of the bridge is the French community of St. Boniface, the birthplace of Louis Riel who became a prominent figure in Manitoba’s political landscape struggled to get Manitoba in a favorable place into confederation. It was the city’s first European settlers when fur trading was a thriving industry. St. Boniface was the “mothership” for many French settlements in western Canada. When the French speaking religious order the Sisters of Charity in Montreal aka as the Grey Nuns arrived in 1844, founded the early educational, cultural and social-service institutions

such as the St. Boniface Hospital, Université de Saint-Boniface to teach Latin to local boys and general humanities. In 1971, it was joined with the City of Winnipeg and all other part of the area. It is one of the largest parts of French community outside Quebec. A short walk along the Red River pathway at The Forks is the Legislative building. I had a short tour of the interior and marveled the stone works and learning about its history. There were many interesting public art display at the grounds. Lush gardens and vegetations were exquisitely arrayed. An impressive collection of painted polar bears of various renditions, Totempoles and giant Inuktsuk adds vibrancy and pleasing stroll around the grounds.
Assiniboine Park. A must place to visit while in Winnipeg is the Assiniboine Park. It is the largest public park in the city where the zoo is located and my favorite the Leo Mol Gardens. The park had gone through an amazing transformation from the last time I was there. The Pavilion Gallery Museum is situated right at the center of the Conservatory Drive features the largest collections of works by three renowned Manitoba artists: Clarence Tillenius, Ivan Eyre and Walter Phillips, regrettably it was closed for renovations at the time I was there. Adjacent to the museum is the new children’s playground, built with several play structures with kid’s friendly hills and slides and picnic grounds. Leo Mol Sculpture gardens consist of more
than three hundred of his works displayed in the 1.2 hectare gardens. Beautiful bronze sculptures are displayed along the garden’s pathways. Leo Mol shortened from his full name Leonid Molodozhanyn was born in Eukraine. Following the Russian invasion he moved to Germany and further honed his sculpting skills, he moved to Winnipeg with his wife in 1948 and he had his first ceramic exhibit in 1949. He is known for his sculptures of square dancers, aboriginals, wildlife, human form and prominent leaders and political figures. He completed over 80 stained glass for churches windows in Winnipeg. He donated 200 of his bronze sculptures to the city of Winnipeg. The Interlakes, to be continued…

5 Great Reasons Why Pregnant Women Should Exercise Google photo

activity, you will be able to stabilize blood sugar levels and avoid this problem.
3. Exercising eases back pain
This is another health issue which usually occurs in the advanced stages of pregnancy. The reason is simple – the baby becomes bigger forcing their mother to change the posture. Pregnant women have to arch their back in order to provide better support for the weight they are carrying. These changes lead to back pain which is usually more intense in the lower back. Lack of exercise will stiffen the back. So, choose some safe exercises for your back and practice them regularly.
4. Exercising helps pregnant women keep proper weight
DF
Benjamin Tamayo CONTRIBUTOR
Pregnancy brings many body changes and this is quite natural because women are carrying a new life inside them. Obviously, pregnant women are doing their best to avoid every situation that they believe might have a negative impact on the baby’s development. This is the reason why many women are staying away from exercise during this period of time, but they are completely wrong. Exercising during pregnancy, just like exercising, in general, provides a wide range of benefits for the baby and for the mother. For those who are still skeptical, we have created a list of five great reasons why pregnant women should exercise.
1. Exercising makes the delivery smoother
During delivery, women have to use all their power to get the baby out.
Regular exercise helps pregnant women strengthen their pelvic muscles and their bodies in general making the delivery much smoother. There are certain exercises like Kegel’s exercises that make the muscles more flexible and supple. Pregnant women can start practicing these exercises from the moment they find out that they are going to have a baby. Of course, if you are interested in performing any kind of exercise while you are pregnant, it is the best idea to talk to your doctor first.
2. Exercising lowers the chances of developing gestational diabetes
Unfortunately, pregnancy can sometimes cause specific health issues and gestational diabetes is one of these issues. This form of diabetes emerges because the levels of blood sugar in pregnant women are changing rapidly due to hormonal imbalance. With the help of physical
Of course, weight gain is completely normal when women get pregnant, but this gain should not exceed certain limits. If a woman gains a lot of weight, she might face some health issues and complications. According to some experts, a weight gain of about 24 pounds (11 kg) is normal. Exercising helps women maintain proper weight, but only if they are following a healthy diet at the same time.
5. Exercising provides more energy and improves mood Exercising supports the release of so-called hormones of happiness which means that you will improve your mood too. The fact that you will maintain a healthy weight and that you will avoid back pain and sleep better if you exercise regularly will make your happier too. In addition, this activity makes pregnant women feel reenergized. We hope that these five reasons will motivate pregnant women to start exercising.

10 Bad Driving Habits that Damage your Car Manny Perez WRITER
You know how important regular oil changes, tire rotations, and changing drive belts are for keeping a car running smoothly and reliably for many years. Perhaps you have a calendar for taking care of routine maintenance tasks, but the way you drive on a daily basis has a significant impact on the longevity of your car and its components. Even experienced drivers have habits that cause unnecessary wear and tear on their vehicle. Left unchecked, these habits can lead to costly repairs or replacements that could otherwise be avoided. Resting Your Hand on the Shifter Unless you’re actively changing gears, there’s no reason to touch the shifter. Resting your hand on the shifter places weight on the transmission’s bushings and synchronizers, causing internal wear. Keeping both hands on the steering wheel, and only taking one off to switch gears, is the best idea. Not Using the Parking Brake Neglecting to use the parking brake forces the entire weight of your vehicle to rest on the parking pawl, which is one little piece of metal within the transmission. Doing this could cause the parking pawl to eventually wear out and break, making “P” on your shifter effectively useless .Use the parking brake every time – there’s really no reason not to. Hauling Unneeded Weight You may not drive a Lotus, but the phrase “simplify, and add lightness” applies to every car. We’re not advocating stripping out sound deadening or removing the back seats, but you should clear out unneeded cargo from your car. Every pound of extra weight impacts fuel economy and handling, plus causes extra stress on
suspension, brake, and drivetrain components. Give your interior and trunk a thorough clean so you’re only carrying the essentials. Only Keeping a Small Amount of Fuel in the Tank Sometimes the cost of a full tank of gas doesn’t fit into your budget, so you only add a $5 to $10 at a time. Most drivers don’t know that this can lead to costly repairs further down the road. Modern fuel pumps are cooled by being submerged in fuel, so driving with only a small amount of fuel causes it to heat up and wear out more quickly. Keeping your gas tank at least a quarter full helps prevent this. Hard Starts and Stops This one’s a no-brainer. Mashing on the gas can be fun, but uses significantly more fuel than gradually applying throttle. Sudden stops are sometimes necessary, but cause faster wear to the brake pads and rotors. Looking ahead, planning ahead, and pressing on the pedals smoothly is the best strategy. Revving the Engine When It’s Cold It’s not a bad idea to let the engine idle for a minute or two after a cold start. This helps it warm up and gives the oil some time to circulate. However, you should resist the urge to rev the engine when it’s cold. Sure, the exhaust sounds great, but revving it when it’s cold causes abrupt temperature changes that can damage components. It also causes undue wear on parts of the engine that haven’t been lubricated by thorough oil circulation. Your engine will sound better, and rev more smoothly, once it’s had a chance to warm up. Riding the Clutch You’re at a stop light in your manual transmission car. You’re pressing on the clutch ready to drop it as soon as the light turns green. All that time spent waiting with the clutch in damages the pressure plate,
release bearing, and release arm. Riding the clutch causes its surfaces graze against each other, wearing them down and opening the possibility for sudden failure. It’s better to be stopped with the clutch out and shifter in neutral, only pressing the clutch and engaging gear when the light turns green. Switching From Reverse to Drive Before Stopping Completely When you’re trying to fit into a tight parking spot, it’s common to shift from reverse to drive while still slowly rolling backwards. This habit should be avoided at all costs. Doing so places strain on the drivetrain when it’s suddenly forced to move in the opposite direction. Simply take that extra moment to make sure you’re completely stopped before
switching from reverse to drive. Dragging the Brakes Downhill Driving down a steep hill can be daunting, so you rest your foot on the brake pedal to be ready to slow down at a moment’s notice. This causes strain and heat to build up in the brake system, wearing out components like brake pads and rotors. Instead, you should shift into a lower gear when you’re driving downhill. This will cause engine braking, which helps slow the car down through natural drivetrain decompression. You’ll find that engine braking can be as effective as regular braking in maintaining your downhill speed. Ignoring Warning Signs It’s easy to ignore those little squeaks , intermit-
tent rattles, or other unusual noises your car makes. Those sounds are warning signs that something’s wearing out or about to go wrong. Don’t wait to find out the cause of the noise, or it may make itself abundantly clear at the worst possible time. If your car is making strange sounds or giving you other warning signs, it’s important to inspect the issue right away. Bad habits can be hard to break, especially for seasoned drivers. Regardless of how much time you have behind the wheel, you care about taking care of your car and not wasting money on unneeded repairs. If you catch yourself doing any of these bad habits, thinking about the money you could save might motivate you to break them.

In the final episode of George Lucas’ Star Wars trilogy, The Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker gets re-united with his father not by giving bent to his hatred but by resisting it and offering love and forgiveness. The dark side of the Force is defeated by the young Jedi’s love and bravery, instilled by his masters. The Force is with those who love and forgive. In many epics, including
the Hindu Bagavad Gita, bravery belongs to those who forgive, to those who offer love for hate. Hanging on the cross in Calvary, Christ utters a prayer of forgiveness for the very people who have brought him excruciating pain and eventual death: “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.” These loving words summarize Christ’s basic attitude towards relationships. Our Christian life is bound to be a journey of forgiveness. Fear and violence are to be confronted with the
loving force of Christian forgiveness. Our Christian community has to be a community of the forgiven and the forgiving. Let us consider this basic Christian option to become a forgiving person, just as Christ was forgiving until the last breath of his life. Let our attitude of forgiveness become our legacy to a world that is full of hatred and indifference. Let our forgiveness become not only an occasional act, but a permanent attitude.

One of the joys of summer is driving. Many memories are created and the act itself is a habit-forming endeavour for both drivers and passengers. Focus on driving becomes intense when all the souls inside the vehicles are snoozing. On the other hand, when it is time for the pilot to catch some rest, the troop sometimes is un-cooperative as silence is hard to find when the passengers are now awake and energized. More often than not, every time we hit the road I noticed how motorcycle riders (Bikers) seem to have a special gesture. As they approach each other, they send an unwritten code of greeting by waving to one another. The unsolicited gesture is full of positive insights. It could signi-
fy respect, joy and/or connection. Bikers earn respect from each other irrespective of model, size and price of the bike they drive. The freedom from enclosure and full exposure to the sound, smell and feel of nature are rare experiences that bring unexplainable joy. In addition, this greeting attests to our need for connection to and acknowledgment from other travellers in the highway of life. One time on the way to High River, the honking of a fancy and high-end car behind me distracted me. Her top down crossover tried to pass my 1.8 litre clunker running 100 kph. Once in front of me I saw her middle finger nail was coated with red polish. That was another kind of gesture, I thought. In our daily walk, aside from our friends, colleagues and family, how many souls have we extended our greeting? While greeting each

of The Force be Gesture connection with you person we meet by waving our hand is welcoming, the spirit behind the gesture is what counts most. Do we still cling on the selective mode or maybe we shifted our minds to auto mode? When we meet people and perceive them to be below our preference and social status, do we ignore and avoid? Maybe its time for an oil change in order to renew our minds, because irrespective of status and appearance, all of us are travellers that deserve respect, joy and connection.
2nd Annual Fiesta Filipino: A festive moment! Sept. 2-3, 2016. (RH/DF) No less than five thou sand people swarmed Olympic Plaza during the 2nd Annual Fiesta Filipino. This time around, pleasing weather (thankfully) sided with the celebration. The 2-day event filled the plaza with various shows and entertainment with numerous local artists, singers and dancers inciting pride and inspiring many. Not even a hailstorm (on the first day) could shake the spirits of everyone involved in the festivities. The event continued and ended with much excitement and enthusiasm. A dance performed by Filipinos and Canadian Indigenous peoples heaped so much praise and commendation. One mother, when asked how the event, said, “Ok lang. One thing frustrating, though, was the line up of people leading to the food truck/tent. It took us 45 minutes just to have a very expensive lunch.” Another tired and weary business vendor said, he “hoped to recoup the amount paid on the tent as the rent was exorbitant”.
Regrettably, the close proximity of the vendor tents restricted the flow of foot traffic and led to overcrowding, limiting potential interactions and deals between prospective clients and businesses. However, the crowds made it feel like one was
walking around Divisoria, a pleasant nostalgic moment in the midst of such a large celebration. Impressively, volunteers facilitated the crowd, vendors, and exhibitors with ease and order. A festive moment, indeed.

“Lahat ng tao napapagod, nagkakasakit, nanghihina. Ang puso ay parang tao. Ang kaibahan nga lang, kapag ang tao nasaktan o nagkasakit, nandiyan ang tindahan para makabili ng gamot. Pero ang puso, mahirap makahanap ng lunas sa sakit na idinulot ng pagkakataon, pag-ibig at tadhana”. Dear Madame KC, Hello, just call me Faye. I’m 24 years old. I have been wanting to write you for a long time, wanting to ask your advice. It’s only now that my heart has been torn to pieces that I found the courage to finally write. I’ve been looking for a love that always cares, understands, does not question, a love that will bring me much happiness. Carl and I met under such circumstances that will lead one to believe we were destined to meet. We always thought that it was fate that brought us together. When I first met him, he had a girlfriend. They have been going steady for more than five years. We started out as friends. The first few times he called, it was about business matters. But he made phone calls every night. Our casual conversations gave way to deep talks on life, love, our innermost thought, problems, and secrets. We became very good friends. Finally, I realized that I was falling in love with him. My life was then in such despair, but I knew that he was always there for me. I decided to keep silent about my feelings for him. I started avoiding his calls. I knew I had to try to stop whatever I was feeling because
he has a girlfriend. But one night during one of our many conversations, it was revealed that he, too, was falling in love with me. Call me stupid, but I admitted my feelings for him. I’m just not one to hide my true feelings. What followed were weeks of being together. We both tried so many times to end our relationship. We tried to cut off communications, but our feelings for each other were much too intense that we kept coming back to each other. One day he told me that he broke up with his girlfriend. I thought it was the happiest day of my life. Just when I thought everything would be okay, he finally admitted that he’s not ready for a commitment, that he still loves the girl and he’s just way too confused. He told me he needed time to think things over. But he kept assuring me that he loves me more. And so I waited, I gave him time. After a month, he started calling me every night. I truly thought that he finally made a decision and was coming back to me. However, what he told me shattered my hopes and dreams of being forever with him. He had made a decision and was going back to the girl. Again. Yet he kept on insisting that he loves me more.
I don’t understand; if he truly loves me more why go back to the girl? He told me the reason why he’s ending our relationship was because he’s been confused for a long time and he thinks it’s unfair to keep me hanging. He said he couldn’t handle seeing me hurting and would rather end it now. Sometimes, he asks, “Bakit ngayon lang?” He wishes he had known me before he met the girl. He admitted that he is stupid because he saw in me everything that he ever wanted in a life partner, yet he couldn’t decide. I don’t want to think that he just led me on, na niloko lang niya ako. Right now, all that I’m holding on to are the things that he told me, that he will always love me. Why does it always have to be a choice between me and someone else and why do I always have to be the one left behind? Don’t I deserve to be happy? How do you truly say goodbye and let go of someone you love so much? Part of me knows that I should let go... but how? Thank you so much for reading my letter. God Bless and more power. Faye
Dear Faye, Pain is life’s most cruel teacher but it is also the most effective mentor. We can all permanently learn from our mistakes for as long as we keep regret and hatred away from our hearts. If you really love Carl then open your mind to understand and accept reality even if it hurts. There is never a perfect fairy tale. You just have to forgive him for whatever anguish he has inflicted upon you so that life can peacefully go on. I don’t want to think
that he just took advantage of your feelings and deliberately intended to hurt you. I believe those caring times you shared were moments of love. It’s just that we all have to come to our senses that love doesn’t work three ways. Carl must have realized he cannot have you and his girlfriend at the same time. And he has to make a choice even if it would mean hurting you. Never let bitterness take away your strength and weaken your faith. Never allow pain to dishearten you; rather , let
yourself grow with wisdom in bearing it. God may have given such a heavy cross. But remember, He never leaves us all alone to carry the burden. He will always be there for us even during the most trying times. Never give up in believing that there is someone waiting for you. Someone who will come along to take away the pain and hatred in your heart and bring back all the love that you have lost in the bitterness of the past. Madame KC
Sometimes the door closes on a relationship, not because we failed but because something bigger than us says this no longer fits our life. So, lock the door, shed a tear, turn around and look for the new door that’s opened. It’s a sign that you’re no longer that person you were, it’s time to change into who you are. It’s going to be okay. SEND YOUR STORIES TO madamekc.diaryofilipino@gmail.com

“Guaranteed seafoods and fishing in the Philippine seas 20-30 years from now.” according to Executive Chef Miek Brammer of Marriott Manila, is one of the most profound advocacies that he like to sustain. Approximately, over 6 million Filipinos are depending on the ocean for food and livelihood. According to Philippine Statitisics Authority/ Bureau of Fish and Aquatic Resources in 2012, Fisheries is one of the major industries in the agriculture sector of the country. The Philippines ranked 7th among the top fish producing countries in the world. However, since 2010, its economic contribution has been declining. Chef Brammer is strongly against “Dynamite Fishing” and believe it must be eradicated once and for all. He chose the path to teach fishermen the right way. He has such regard with proper fishing practices that will not harm the marine environment and help keep the country’s fisheries industry thrive. “I would like to think about humanity as a whole” Executive Chef Brammer said. The love affair for “Seafood Sustenance Advocacy” is to minimize the harmful effect of over fishing
and extinct lives at sea. Executive Chef Brammer wants to ensure he plays much bigger role in preserving the raw products of the Philippines such as local seafoods and vegetables. Chef Brammer is one active participant among dozens of premier hotels and restaurants that rallied for the awareness and first Sustainable Seafood Week, held last February 2016 in Manila. His determination to seafood sustainability will take him next to the Second Sustainable Seafood Week in February 2017 at Thailand Bangkok and other other participating key cities in Asia. Through Executive Chef Brammer’s initiative as well, the compost segregation to re instore local farmlands came into realization with their equally responsible partners in organic farming and producing. On top of that, for over six years now, his company’s spirit to serve allowed Chef Brammer to partner with Chairman Gordon of the Philippine Red Cross and has been donating food to almost 300 recipients, as well as feeding programs to thousands of people in Manila annually. Travelled most of Europe, Asia, and other other continents, Chef Brammer was born and raised in Beirut, Germany.
