Welcome Campers!
T
HERE'S just something relaxing about camping with your friends and family... it's slow down time. Out in the woods, you're unplugged from your to do list and tuned into your adventure time. Instead of recharging your phone, you're recharging yourself. You're not making calls, you're making s'mores at the campfire. Or perhaps you're just laying in the tent stargazing next to your best friend. In New Jersey, campgrounds are so plentiful - from the mountains to the ocean to the Pinelands - that you can visit a different campground each vacation and experience new memories. From the fresh air to the abundance of greenery and beautiful landscapes, it's all good old fashioned fun you're about to have. Camping is about creating new memories, traditions, and bonds with your closest crew. Will you roast a hot dog first? Tell ghost stories or reminisce about fun times? This is your time to unplug from the daily grind and reconnect. In our 2017 New Jersey Campground Guidebook, you'll find everything you need to plan a spectacular camping vacation whether it be a week or a lifetime. Yes, lifetime! Couples are starting to retire in RVs and live their golden years out on the road looking for adventure. There are six regions in the Garden State and each has a section here in the guide. Every campground is listed along with its amenities and contact information. A comprehensive map sits in the center to help you navigate the landscape. Let the Adventure Begin! Fishing & Crabbing Regulations Licenses
Anyone 16 and older must have a valid license (see Exemptions) to fish the fresh waters of New Jersey with handline, rod and line, or longbow and arrow. This includes privately-owned lakes and other waters. New Jersey does not require a general saltwater fishing license for recreational surf casting, deep sea or bay fishing. However, New Jersey saltwater anglers must register with the New Jersey Saltwater Recreational Registry Program. A clamming license is now called a shellfish license and is required for harvesting of all species of benthic mollusks (with the exception of conchs) including, but not limited to, hard and soft clams, surf clams, oysters, bay scallops and mussels. Licenses are available at shellfish license agent and online.
Exemptions
Anglers Under 16 - No fishing license is required of persons under 16 years old. NJ Residents Age 70 and Over - A driver’s license or other acceptable proof of age containing date of birth and physical description will function as the actual fishing license for New Jersey residents 70 and over. No application fee is required, no registration with the Division of Fish and Wildlife is required and no license will be issued. Trout stamps are not required.
Crabbing
Single hand lines and collapsible traps do not require a license. Crabs taken with a recreational license may not be sold or used for barter. The maximum harvest and/or possession limit of crabs is one bushel a day. All organisms other than crabs and conchs shall be immediately released. All female crabs having eggs or spawn attached shall be immediately released. Crab pots and trot lines may be tended only from 4am - 9pm prevailing time, in Delaware Bay and 24 hours a day in all other waters. All crab pots must be checked and emptied of all crabs and other organisms at least once every 72 hours. Minimum size for harvesting: peeler or shedder crabs - 3 inches; soft crabs - 3.5 inches and hard crabs - 4.5 inches. All measurements are from point to point. Please visit state. nj.us for more information.

gateway One of America’s Top Cultural Hotspots Did you know New Jersey has steep cliffs in its landscape? We did and we couldn’t be happier to share! They are called the
Palisades and are part of the Palisades Interstate Park. The park is a National Historic Landmark and the actual palisades are a National Natural Landmark. If you're camping in Gateway, put this on your must-see list. If you're in the mood for more of mother nature's finest, check out the Great Falls of Paterson. This landmark is 260 feet wide with a 77 foot drop. In Gateway, you'll find natural beauty and arts and culture. From museums to galleries, there is always something new to explore. The Gateway to Freedom shouldn't be visited without seeing Ellis Island, the home of the Statue of Liberty.

Get your roasting sticks ready... it's hot dog time! There are few more iconic camping rituals than roasting a hot dog over your open campfire. It's all-American, delicious fun! The National Hot Dog Council has declared the third Wednesday in July to be Hot Dog Day! As if we needed another reason to enjoy this delicious treat. Warming a hot dog as you chat with friends about all the fun things you did camping that day is about as good as it gets. Once it's cooked to your liking (crispy, just warm, burnt to a crisp) place it in the hot dog bun and you've got yourself a meal! Here are a few ways to fancy it up.
Crescent Dogs by the Fire Ingredients Can of Crescent Rolls 8 Hot Dogs Condiments (Ketchup, Salsa, Sriracha, Mustard) Skewers Instructions Unroll the package of crescent rolls on a flat surface (a plate or tray on the campsite picnic table will work). Separate the rolls into 8 triangles. Wrap each dog starting with the wide end. Once all the hot dogs are wrapped, skewer each carefully. Roast over the campfire, careful not to burn the dogs. Once all the hot dogs are cooked, put on plates and serve with your favorite condiment and side. MAKE AHEAD: Wrap all hot dogs at home and place in baggies in cooler or refrigerator until about ten minutes before roasting.
Bacon Wrapped Doggies Ingredients Package of Hot Dogs Strips of Bacon Toothpicks Skewers Instructions Wrap a strip of bacon around each hot dog, spiraling it so it covers the entire dog. At the top, place a toothpick through the bacon and dog, securing it so the bacon doesn't fall off. Do the same at the bottom. Once all dogs are wrapped, skewer them and roast until bacon is at desired crispiness. Place in a fancy or regular bun (brioche buns are easy to make and work well) and top with your favorite condiment. Though we suggest putting in on the side, for maximum bacon enjoyment. Yum! MAKE AHEAD: The bacon wrapping can be done at home, for extra convenience. Place wrapped hotdogs in your cooler or fridge until right before you roast.
Hot Dog Skewers Ingredients Hot Dogs Vidalia Onions Pineapple Green Peppers Skewers Instructions Cut all ingredients into bite sized pieces, suitable for skewers. Place ingredients on skewers in any order you like. We suggest veggie, hot dog, fruit, veggie, and so on. Spray or lightly coat with olive oil. Roast until veggies are cooked through with a little char. Serve with the dipping sauce of your choice. We suggest a barbecue or sweet and sour sauce. MAKE AHEAD: The skewers can be assembled at home, but don't coat them with oil until right before roasting.

The Delaware River New Jersey’s Other Shore Imagine you're responsible for thousands of men's lives, it's cold - the brutal Northeast winter had taken hold, and you're about to attempt a journey across a icy river. This was the situation in 1776 General George Washington faced as crossed the Delaware River the morning of December 26 and marched into Trenton. You can relive this moment in history when you camp in the Delaware River Region by visiting the exact site of Washington's crossing in Titusville. Once you've had your fill of history, you can unwind at any of the region's breweries and wineries. Shopping? Yes please! Charming towns like Princeton or big shopping meccas like Marlton have shops to please any purchaser. This historic region is bursting with arts, culture, adventure and more!

Campfire Refreshments
these
recipes!
You're warm and toasty by the campfire, laughing with friends and enjoying the peaceful crackle of the late-night flames. It's cocktail time at camp. Toasted Marshmallow Shot Glasses Ingredients Regular Sized Marshmallows Any type of liquor, but Bailey's or Kahlua is recommended Instructions Get two forks ready. Use one to pierce the top of the marshmallow so the other three sides are free for toasting. Place over the open campfire rotating to make sure the bottom and sides are well toasted. Use other fork to help keep the marshmallow from moving while you roast. Once toasted, remove from fire and place on plate. The center will implode, leaving a perfect spot for your shot. The marshmallow will melt quickly after the liquor is poured in, so pour fast and drink. Then gobble up the marshmallow. To modify this recipe for kids, use chocolate milk instead of liquor! - recipe and photo by Cheri Alberts from The Watering Mouth.
S'mores Martini Ingredients Per Serving: 2 oz. Marshmallow vodka 1 oz. Chocolate liqueur 1 oz. Creme de Cacao 2 oz. Cream or half & half 1 oz. Chocolate, melted 1 Graham cracker 3 Marshmallows Instructions Crush the graham cracker into a shallow bowl using your hands. It's okay if there are some chunkier pieces. Place the chocolate into a pan and place over campfire until melted. Dip the rim of a martini glass into the chocolate and then into the graham cracker pieces. Refrigerate or place in a cooler for a few minutes to set. Add the marshmallow vodka, chocolate liqueur, creme de cacao and cream to a cocktail shaker. Fill with ice, shake well and pour into the prepared glass. Spear the marshmallows on the end of a skewer or roasting fork and hold over the campfire for a couple of seconds until the ends get toasted. Thread them onto a cocktail pick and garnish the drink. - recipe and photo by Anita at A Cocktail Life.

The All-American Mule Non-Alcoholic Version Ingredients 2 oz Sparkling Water 3 oz Ginger beer Juice of half a lime Lime slice for garnish Moscow Mule mug (copper mug) or highball for serving Instructions Fill your glass or mug with ice (you can also pre-freeze it for added chill). Add the sparkling water and then top it with the ginger beer. Squeeze in the juice from half of a lime. You can put the other half right into the drink. Stir and enjoy. Optional: use vodka instead of sparkling water. Note: Ginger beer traditionally does not contain alcohol, but label should be checked to be safe. Photo from A Beautiful Mess.

Camping Etiquette There are basic rules of etiquette for practically every situation and camping isn't an exception. Everyone who camps regularly or even the casual camper knows consideration goes a long way. Here are a few etiquette tips for you to follow on your next camping adventure!
RESPECT YOUR CAMPSITE Leave it the way you found it.
RESPECT OTHER CAMPSITES Don't tread through neighboring sites to get to your destination.
TURN OFF YOUR LIGHTS Set a timer so you're not keeping lights on too late.
CLEAN UP AFTER YOUR PET
Grab a small pack of baggies and you're set.
SHARE SOME SUPPLIES Have extra hotdogs? Share with your next door neighbor.
MEET YOUR NEIGHBORS See above.
PUT YOUR FIRE OUT This is common sense safety.
KEEP PETS ON LEASH Again, this one may not seem like much, but for someone who isn't a dog person, it's everything. 2017 NJCOA Guidebook

EORGE gracefully walks toward the open air. With his golden hair, he is quite the looker, especially when he bats his large brown eyes at you. George, you see, is a palomino quarter horse. As he turns gently, his engraved nameplate comes into view. It doesn’t say “George” though as one might expect. It says “Corson.” Though he can’t say aloud except for a whinny, he seems to enjoy wearing his halter as much as he enjoys eating carrots from his owner Liz Corson’s hands. Liz doesn’t just have horses on her property in Cape May County, she breeds and shows them and is a multiple time Palomino World Champion. “I’ve always loved horses. Where I grew up (in the Princeton area) it wasn’t feasible to have them,” said
Liz. The palomino quarter horse has a rich legacy – and as it turns out, so do the Corsons. Liz’s husband Curtis Jr’s ancestors founded Cape May County along with other notable families like the Townsends. Curtis Jr is 12th generation Corson and 13th generation Townsend. The couple’s three children Katie, Curtis III, and Somers continue the family line. It was Katie and Curtis III who first began showing horses. “I took over when the kids stopped,” said Liz. During that time, they each showed the same palomino horse. Then Liz got her own and the rest, as they say, is history. Now, Liz, her horses and trainers travel the country in a big trailer going to about two shows a month from April to September. “The big trailer can hold four continued on page 54

continued from page 52 horses. It’s a horse trailer but also has living quarters. It’s a people camper that can sleep six people,” said Liz. The trailer also has the space to bring all the other stuff they need during competitions like saddles and other gear. Liz and her crew travel to horse shows in Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, and Mississippi. At the shows, Liz’s horses are referred to by their real names, not their barn names. George’s name is "Thinking Out Loud" and Adele, another of Liz’s horses, is named “Suddenly Rumor Has It.” “When they name horses, they like to get the names of the studs in there,” Liz explained. At each of these horse shows, there are several different classes of competition. George does Hunter Under Saddle - a class of hunt seat style riding – one of two forms of English riding. Hunter Under Saddle is also called “Flat.” “Some people jump. I’m a chicken. I do flat work,” said Liz, who is a world champion in the Hunter in Hand class. Judges are basing their scoring decisions on how well you ride, how you look, and how you can maneuver the horse. In 2016’s Palomino World Championship, George won Reserve World Champion. Adele

placed third. She is a western horse and competes in the western pleasure class. “This is where you see the sparkly outfits,” said Liz with a warm, contagious laugh. Each year one of Liz’s horses usually wins at the shows. Sometimes Liz is riding, and sometimes one of her trainers rides. Though her horses currently compete in per-
formance halter, western pleasure, and hunter in hand classes, Liz is hoping they will soon compete in horsemanship. In this category, also called equitation, judges are looking at your ability to do a pattern and how accurate the pattern is. “Both horses are three years old. Hopefully next year I can do it,” she said.

It's hard to understand what you're seeing until you get close, but as soon as the grey and red colors start to take shape, you
know something unusual is coming into view. Lucy the Elephant, a six-story National Historic Monument sits tall right near the beach in Margate. Take a tour through the building, up the narrow stairs to see what was formerly a hotel in the 20th Century. The Greater Atlantic City Region is home to so many wonderful sites that you can camp there for years and not see them all. Ride a thrill ride at Steel Pier. Take a stroll on the world-famous Atlantic City Boardwalk, or press your luck at the craps table. Hike through forests or see marine life up close... this is the Greater Atlantic City Region.
