She is Deirdre... or at least, that’s what dad says because, to be honest, I’m not even sure she exists. Dad says she’s the ghost of my grandmother who died when he was born, and that he is the only one who can see and hear her. And that’s why he drinks like a fish! Maybe a shrink would have a different opinion but... I dunno. I haven’t decided yet if she’s real or just one of my father’s sloshed hallucinations. Oh, and I forgot to say... in life, she was a witch.

This is my dad. Except for myself and some workers at the registry office, only a few people know his first name. You can simply call him Rourke. Dad lives with me in Dublin and has the ‘gift’ to take upon himself any curse that you may be afflicted with. Hey, I know it sounds crazy (it certainly makes our lives crazy!) but it’s really true! All he has to do is touch you, and your curse passes on to him, becoming his problem. That’s how he earns a living.

And this one’s me Kylie, the unexpected product of Mr. Hexbuster’s youth. Let’s see, what do you need to know? I’m thirteen, and I’m my father’s assistant (not a secretary, okay!). I never knew my mother, but I’m not going to make a Greek tragedy of it. Honestly, I can’t blame her if she left a guy like dad - but if she didn’t feel the need to take me with her, I’m certainly not going to start looking! I’ll just wait until I’m eighteen - then it’s farewell to dad, farewell to school and, most importantly, farewell to curses and all that obscure crap.
