Year 1 , 8 weeks project on biomaterials, under the supervision of Marlies Boterman

The notion of Nature is very interesting to study as it questions what we considere Nature to be. For most people it is this bucolic image of the wild nature to be found in reserves - areas that had to be fenced to be protected from human expansion. But what about the larger part of our territory, is this still nature? A productive nature?

This productive nature is, in the Netherlands, responsible for the production of an amount of cow manure that the country itself cannot process. This by-product from the meat and milk industry is therefore exported to other countries.

This pavilion, located in the Goois Natuurreservaat, is built from ground found on site, rammed together with cow manure sourced from a local farm. This technic, extensively studied and explained to me by Yask Kulshreshtha during his PhD, increases significantly the water-resistant of the rammed earth. The slabs and lintels needed for the structure are made out of concrete slabs re-used from the existing pavillion. The pavillion proposes to experience and frame this bucolic nature through a material reminding the productive nature. This narrative of the two natures invites us to reflect on the perception that we have of our environment.

RENATURING ARCHITECTURE RENATURING ARCHITECTURE

2022 P2b - 8 weeks project Academie van Bouwkunst under the supervision of Rene Bouman and Sebastian Bernardy

This proposal explores ways to heal the landscape and our interactions with it. A composition of a green network surrounding production plots will create a support for people to interact with nature and build awareness.

The network of corridors and pockets will allow biodiversity to thrive, making the landscape more resilient. On the plots, the transition of the agricultural system could support the transition in the building sector by growing construction materials.

8 OPEN APPLICATION assistent ontwerperNOVEMBER 2022
MATERIALS

As nature grows progressively in time, so do the different materials that can be harvested. The local architecture, therefore, evolves with the landscape, starting from soft materials in the first years to stronger ones later.

On the plot of the old farm a series of workshops and educational spaces could offer a place to explore the potentialities of the locally sourced materials and generate education.

The building itself would be a demonstration of this architecture growing with the landscape and the materials harvested.

On slowness

In the last century, modern architecture alongside society at large developed seeking efficiency. It has often focused on high performance in terms of time, space and costs. But producing more also produces more exhaustion across the human to the planetary scale.

Nowadays the pace of architectural practice seems accepted as part of the professional culture. However, the processes that led to this acceleration also resulted in many negative outcomes. It is therefore interesting to re-evaluate the concept of slowness in the context of a practice, which may be going too fast to allow self-reflection and true contemplation in the current time and its challenges.

The current pace experienced in architecture should not be taken for granted or definitive. No habit should create a rule. And although in a highly competitive market most architecture firms can hardly afford to lack dynamism, slowness should be considered essential and necessary in the process.

The upscaling of the projects’ size and pace has also generated a division and a hyper-specialization of the different disciplines involved in construction. While this Taylorisation of the process is well suited for financial efficiency, we must ask ourselves if it also suits a discipline that encounters new contexts and questions with each project?

It could be said that most of our contemporary problems originate in the way we occupy space by colonizing, mining, and exploiting it. Hence, working with space carries a big responsibility in the reconciliation with our environment.

In a constant search to accelerate the production process, the industrialization of the construction sector led to a standardization of techniques and materials. Sometimes turning the architect into an engineer assembling pieces from a catalogue, to fulfil the client’s requirements. The design process is simplified and the materials ready to implement immediately.

Industrialization has narrowed our understanding of the environment. We consume goods and build with materials of which we know neither the origin nor the process behind them. Making us part of a system, which we would otherwise maybe not support. The long-established values embodied in some of the materials can no longer be considered without the impact of their production. To unlearn the human-centered perspective, we should deconstruct our traditional representations of materials. Marble for example - can it still be viewed as noble and pure when we consider the enormous impact of its extraction?

Time is necessary to comprehend and assimilate our environment. In architecture, slowness proposes to create room for practices that are not profitable in the short term. As they are the ones that can create embodied value built up through knowledge and experience. By conducting never-ending experimentations such practices can anchor their process in an ever-changing time and context. This is crucial to recreate the link between design and materiality and through that, to the context.

Can the way we design space, offer a new understanding of our environment and change our interaction with it? Could architecture be explored like one learns a craft? Where knowledge comes from experiments and understanding from observation? Our approach to materials requires humility and reciprocity, where time and experience develop intuition and understanding for a craft. Where space is the crafted material.

2019 - on going work on the wheel and glazing for tableware and vases

The exploration of different mediums such as photography and ceramic answers my curiosity in the interactions between all the elements that are creating our environment. Their practice allow me to explore space and materiality through different scales and lenses. They are part of an overall neverending process to train my own sensibility and understading of who and what surrounds me.

Ceramics can be considered as mini earth architectures. They require patience and precision but also especially an understanding of the forces in action in a shape. With time the hand develops an intuition based on a comprehension of how the clay behaves.

The possibility that it offers to interact with the material through direct shaping is yet another tool to develop further one’s architectural sensibility.

2021 - on going for the gemeente Amsterdam team Noordflank as main designer with Gaby Getrouw phase of the design SO

The thrill of climbing high, testing body limits and even falling have been proven to be valuable in the emotional and physical development of children. Through playing they develop their agility, strength and balance. This design explores the making of an exciting and thrilling environment for the kids while fulfilling the numerous safety requirements of our time. It proposes a public space of play in which the sculptural aspect is as important as its play function.

NDSM-werf is the new district under construction on the site of the former shipyard. Streams of people will use the public space which should offer livable and sustainable outdoor space. The playground A9 is located in a very constrained space; the street is narrow, the buildings are high and the underground filled with pipes which need to stay accessible.

To tackle these issues, this design proposes to use containers for the structure of the playground. This creates great flexibility as they can be moved when needed. The open container structures offer space and modularity for the children to play and they reassure parents by setting a frame and transparency.

Maintenance of the pipes located under the containers can be done by removing it or removing the floors laying on the containers. This system decreases the pressure on the pipes and doesn’t need any paving removable in order to access the pipes.

Buiksloterham is part of the big developement operated in several areas of Amsterdam Noord. The neighborhoods are transitioning from industry to mixed programs including living and working. The density raises and with that the need for mobility and accessibility. These two new traffic bridges are part of one of a new urban axis. They were thought as a set, the big and the little brother. Based on the ambitions developed for the whole Buiksloterham, the emphasis is put on sustainability and circularity, following the principles set for the bridges: industrieel karakter / herkenbaarheid / dynamiek en sculpturaal / gelaagdheid in gebruik. The main intention in this project was also to make from of those bridges, a landmark for Buiksloterham from the Ij, a connecting and collective object, accessible to all, materializing the ambition of sustainability and cohesion in the city. After a process of going back and forth between the possibilities of materials and the aesthetics, we proposed a design for a timber structure supported by a very large timber truss, connecting the industrial past of the area and its ambitions for sustainability.

2020 academie van bouwkunst course on building technics and structures under the supervision of Jos Rijs, Jean-Marc Saurer en Adri Verhoef

Guided by both technical research into building physique as well as intuition, this assignment of the pre master course explores the use of steel as a main construction material. It investigates structural behaviour of a single material to explore its potential and get an understanding of its physical properties. 10 technical details were created to explain both the concept and its implementation.

The volume specifically needed to be partly cantilevered. The use of steel allows for a light and elegant, yet sturdy structure. Visually this proposal centers around a curtain wall highlighting the cantilevered structure, while the rest of the building is covered by plain corrugated steel.

2021 academie van bouwkunst Year 1 , 8 weeks project on the topic big house under the supervision of Milad Pallesh and Richard Proudley

The building is located on a small urban square in Amsterdam West along a small canal and a railways. Is it made of a house and a dojo for sensei Jimmy to live and practice kyudo, a japanse martial art.

Enlarging the water surface on the south of the square opens up the space, brings light and amphizes the presence of nature. It also creates a large island for the animals protecting them from the business of the city and avoiding the use of fences. The house slightly sunken into the ground connects on the south to the water. On the north side, its elevation connects with the verticality of the trees operating a mouvement going from low to high following the dynamic of the existing volumes from the water to the tower.

The design of the building seeks inspiration into the precepts of shintoïsme and their spatial expression. More specifically, it explores the architectural translation of the duality between two opposite but complementary concepts: the connection to the environment, the idea of contemplation and being grounded; and on the other hand the idea of constant renewal and mouvement.

CONCEPT

1. Feeling grounded and constant renewal, two opposite, yet complementary notions of Shintoism translated into spaces. The dojo sits at the heart, as a meeting point of the two architectural vocabularies.

SPATIAL PRINCIPLES

2. Water and trees overflow the urban square, ankering the architecture to the natural elements

3. Fitting respectfully into the existing dynamics of the space

4. Integrated into the urban fabric by offering a soft transition form the public to the private

When the river supports soft mobility

2016 graduation project master in landscape architecture thesis (4 months) research and analytical work on the project site

Urban mobility is a very important theme that gathers nowadays big issues such as social, environmental and energy issues. In that perspective, Le Grand Paris is currently developing a large and expensive mobility network in order to connect the different thematic hubs on the metropolis scale to enhance the attractivity and the dynamism of the whole region. However, a regional connection between hubs is not relevant if these ones are not first connected on a smaller scale to their territory.

This thesis reflects on soft mobility as a tool in the connection of fragmented territories on a small scale, from neighborhood to neighborhood. It questions the role of the landscape architect on this subject through public space design.

Saint-Denis is a very interesting study case. Very old city where used to be buried french queens and kings, it is nowadays very fragmented from all the large scale infrastructures that pass through it, such as highways, canals, train tracks and large boulevards. This fragmentation created enclaves consisting mostly of social housing towers from the 60’s, where rise social tensions.

These areas are not included in Grand Paris’ projects, and despite their proximity they cannot take advantage of it because they are not well connected.

When the river supports soft mobility

2016 graduation project master in landscape architecture, design proposal (5 months)

To research on a possible network of connections between neighborhoods I used a geographic line which crosses the city from East to West. The old river called Vieille Mer (the Old Sea) is nowadays underground however we can still follow its shape in the morphology of the city. Using this axis as a support for a design implementing and encouraging soft mobilities can reconnect the different part of the cities to each other and reconnect the inhabitants to their geographic territory.

The design along side the river structure creating a continuity through the different neighborhoods it goes through. It focuses on one section of the river as a study case to develop a methodology that can be adapted to each part of it.

I heard once in a lecture that space as a rational notion does not have any reality. Space only exist through the experience that somebody has of it - this experience being purely subjective and dependant of light, smell, temperature, the history of the person, or what they ate just before. Space is therefore not just about volumes and materialities but is also very much connected to the notion of time. Together they form narratives. I find the exploration of those narratives through photography very complementary to the practice of architecture.

2020 academie van bouwkunst pre-master design assignment on the topic villa under the supervision of Paulien Bremmer, Marlies Boterman and Jos Rijs

Seyran Ates is a feminist lawyer who founded a liberal and mixte mosque in Berlin. For that and for her very progressive positions on religion she is facing numerous threats. As a consequence the discinction between the different parts of her life, public, private and spiritual is very singular. The spiritual made public impacts the private life by the need of protection. This proposition develops a spatial translation of those diferent spheres into the volumes of the house - public (or social) private, and spiritual: The social volume correspond to the living spaces, central and very open and bright. The private area which integrate the rooms, bathrooms and utilities is a close volume, the only one with doors. The last space dedicated to spirituality lays on the water almost. The light reflects from the water through a perforated brick wall providing a meditative environment. Those volumes coming together create folds, openings and transparencies allowing light to percolate through the different spaces. A brick envelop softly hugs the whole house in a protective manner. The overall space is organized around a patio opening the core of the house to the Ij river and further landscape.

The house made out timber and recylcled bricks connects and slots into natural cycles. In that way, water is the connecting element between the landscape and the house. This translates through different functions around the house such as generating energy through a turbine, collecting rain water, and water purification by phytoremediation.

2019 gemeente Amsterdam for team ontwerp publieke ruimte preliminary study for project Grote Westerpark under the supervision of Ruwan Aluvihare

The Westerpark is one of the biggest park of the city and is located very strategically between the city center and HavenStad, a new big part of the city in development. The park is mainly devided in two areas; The plot gardens represent a great historical heritage and a very unusual and beautiful place in the city. However they are rarely open to public and they cover the biggest portion of the park. The rest of the park which is open to public is under the pressure of the amount of users and public events.

The project Grote Westerpark investigate how to release some of the pressure on the public part by making the plot gardens more open to public while protecting their very special character. Through this it is also important to work on the unity of the park as a whole.

In that perspective, I started researching on the identity of the park through a system of objects or interventions which refers to the same visual family. Together they create a link and a reference throughout the different parts of the park. The systems considers the different typologies, categories of price and time line to investigate which ones can be implemented first.

A next step in the project will develop on the design of the family of object.

2021 academie van bouwkunst

Year 1 , 8 weeks project on the topic the flexible future proof city under the supervision of Olga Marelja

Inspired by The uses of disorder of Richard Sennett, Pablo Sendra explores in Designing disorder how, instead of the clasical top down design practice, we could shape the areas through a bottom up process based on a strong community network, allowing the unexpected to happen.

The translation of this in this project starts with the absence of a fixed design, with the idea that the area develops continuously through initiatives, based on the needs and impulses of locals. The role of the municipality is to create the conditions for this, based on the existing network of actors already existing.

Keilerwerf 1 which is already a spot for makers and urban mining grows into a platform where local can find support, expertise and building materials.

Is it possible to maintain the public realm as a flexible space that adapts over time? Can disorder be designed?

The matrix

The main framework is composed of different layers:

- the existing situation and basic infrastructure provided by the municipality such as energy, water, sewage infrastructure as well as accesses to the area and the blocks.

- to frame the intiatives in a way which can respect and enhance the identity and the spatial qualities of the area, a matrix is created, providing with rules and conditions in the different zones of the area.

All the interventions should follow 4 principles: It should add value to the biodiversity network; It should promote collective uses through production, education or culture; It should have a sustainable use of ressources; And it should be demontable and based on standard measurments.

To implement this last principle, the area is developped following a grid based on the standard measurments of a containers, for the buildings as well as for the public space. This allows a circularity in the material flow which can be reused in different parts of the site.

This plan is therefore not a master plan but rather a possible image of the evolution of the area at one moment in time. With this idea of the constant evolution of the space.

This create a system where the spatial organisation is tightly connected and co-dependant with the network of local stakeholders and communities. Creating more involvment from people, a feeling of collective ownership of the neighbourhood, more flexibility, and resilience in the uses of space.

Amsterdam 2012-2017

2017-2018 gemeente Amsterdam team ruimtelijke kwaliteit coordination, production, graphic design, photography for some of the projects with Eric van der Kooij

The compact city has become one of the well-known great challenges of nowadays urban life to answer the rising pressure on housing and services.

With higher densities of population in the city, the role of public space as bonding element, support of social life and urban flows is increasingly important. We expect public space to be safe, ac cessible, to bring fluently together the different users of the city and to fulfill all the technical requirements such as the rainwater management and organization of the underground. But we also want public space to be comfortable, beautiful and green.

With this publication we wanted to reflect on the question of public space in Amsterdam by presenting a panel of realizations from 2012 to 2017 as well as a series of articles developing on different aspects of the topic.

The book presents 60 projects organized in four categories being squares, streets, parcs and garden and bridges.
