ANC Waterberg regional conference postponed

Photos: Andries van der Heyde Lizzy Bapela

ANC branches across the Waterberg were this week scheduled to converge and give direction as to the question on everyone’s lips: who between Cyril Ramaphosa and Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma should be the leader of both party and state. Speaking in the aftermath of another collapsed regional elective conference on Monday, 6 November, ANC Waterberg region chairperson, Morris Mataboge, said the upwards of 80 branches were to deliberate on a range of issues. Among the issues to be discussed, he said, were the branches’ contribution towards policy documents. Although Mataboge did not directly talk to the burning issue of nominations for the national leadership, elsewhere in the province branches have drawn up their lists of preferred candidates. Branches across the Waterberg, with rivalry between factions at boiling point, were expected to engage for the national leadership choices, most probably between the front-runners Ramaphosa and DlaminiZuma. With a few weeks to go to the allimportant summit, deployees from Luthuli House once again postponed indifinitely the regional conference, for the the fifth time running. Proceedings on the Bela-Bela Local Municipality premises last weekend got out of control, after rival factions could not agree on procedural and other matters. Luthuli House had dispatched NEC members Faith Muthambi, Kebby Maphatsoe, Ruth Bhengu, Senzeni Zokwana, and Thulas Ncesi, and PEC members, Knocks Seabi and Premier Stan Mathabatha, to preside over the conference. According to Mataboge, the national deployees postponed the conference due to a dispute over two branches at Lephalale. The Luthuli House envoy have as yet to unveil a new date and venue for the regional elective conference. The mainstream press has reported that Ramaphosa was steaming ahead of Dlamini-Zuma in four regions elsewhere in Limpopo, namely Vhembe, Sekhukhune, Mopani and Peter Mokaba.

Comedian to mesmerize Gauteng Mookgophong landfil site in court Mzamane Ringane Award-winning Mookgophong comedian Multi B (real name Hendrick Moreroa) was billed to captivate Pretoria fun-lovers during his show named “Thintha Stress Sa Pitori”, on Saturday, 25 November. Loosely translated, the theme means “relieving Pretorians of stress”. The event, hosted by GuessWhat? Entertainment, would be held at the Living Oracles Tabernacle in central Pretoria. As part of the activities for the day, Multi B (also known as Mr Thintha Stress) would launch his live DVD. The debut DVD was recorded at the Favours Cathedral Church in Pretoria West, in July this year. Fellow comedians, including Limpopo’s Mr Majo, Tebogo Ntlhane and Godfrey Moremi, were expected to make an appearance at the event. “The aim is to make everyone laugh. Proceedings will commence from 6pm until we are certain that everyone has laughed away their stress,” he said. The local comedian brought home the coveted Best Gospel Comedian accolade from the Independent National Gospel Music Awards (Ingoma) in August this year. Certain municipalities within Limpopo have fallen short of Afri-Forum’s compliance scorecard as far as their landfill site audit results are concerned. The organization this month audited all landfill sites in the province as part of their annual landfill audit campaign. The civil rights organisation however found that certain municipalities would have to make urgent changes in order to adhere to legislation in this regard. Afri-Forum’s District Coordinator for Limpopo, Jaco Grobbelaar, said in a statement that all landfill sites in the province which scored less than 80% would have to be brought up to standard, and that

municipalities should take responsibility for waste management. “Landfill sites that are poorly managed have a very negative impact on the environment as well as the community. It is also the community’s responsibility to apply increasing pressure to municipalities in cases where landfill sites are not up to scratch,” he said. With regards to the ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality, judgement has been reserved by the North Gauteng High Court. Afri-Forum has since approached the courts to rule that the authorities clean up the Mookgophong landfill site. The Mookgophong landfill site scored an average of 19% on Afri-Forum’s ecompliance scorecard of the audit.

Malaria alert in Waterberg Justin Steyn Cases of malaria continued to be reported in transmission areas including a part of the Waterberg. National Institute for Communicable Diseases spokesperson, Sinenhlanhla Jimoh, recently said these cases included farms along the Lephalale River of the Waterberg region. “This follows a very busy 2017 malaria season, which peaked in April and May and extended into June. “High rainfall, humidity and ambient temperatures provided ideal conditions for malaria mosquito breeding, and contributed to an increase in malaria cases in the southern African region,” he said. Jimoh said unusually mild winter temperatures in malaria areas had allowed for ongoing mosquito and parasite development, and led to an early and busy malaria season,

starting in August. In early October, The BEAT’s sister publication, The Post, reported that an elderly Vaalwater resident had died from the decease. Jeanett Swanevelder (71) died while being treated at the Eugene Marais hospital in Pretoria, on Thursday, 5 October. To date Vaalwater had not been recognized as a malaria area. According to research, classic symptoms of contracted malaria include headaches, cold shivers and sweating. This is common in adults. Other symptoms include fatigue, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, sore throat and coughing. Young children are not immune and may show symptoms of poor feeding, vommiting, diarrhoea and coughing.

level crossing. The latest of the accidents happened in June 2017, where the occupants allegedly fled the scene immediately after the accident occurred. Transnet expressed concern regarding the incidents of accidents at the level crossing and saw it fit to engage various stakeholders in the province and embark

on a Joint Level Crossing Safety Awareness Campaign. “The aim of the focused campaign is to create awareness about the dangers at level crossings and to educate all road users on how to behave at railway crossings. The road users include motorists and pedestrians,” Mbulaheni added.

Medics were helpful and polite Jennie Escreet, via email, writes: At a time when there seems to be no positive news, it is great to report the following: I had a medical crisis on Saturday morning, 4 November, with one of our employees on our property 6 km outside of Bela-Bela. I immediately phoned the state hospital and there was no reply. I then phoned St. Vincent’s Hospital and they gave me the number of the private ambulance service. The private ambulance service was very helpful and would have come out to the property but understood that

calling the state ambulance would be better. They then gave me the number of the state ambulance service. The state ambulance service answered their phone immediately. They took down the details of the person in need and the directions to the property. Within 15 minutes they were here and the two medics on duty were helpful and polite. I must share that I had feared that they may not answer the phone and when contacted we would have to wait hours for their arrival. What a pleasure that in the doom and gloom around us there was this one ray of light. Thank you.

Ntsako Maswanganyi of Addicted to Life Athletics Club told The BEAT the event served to introduce a healthy lifestyle to children as early as possible in their lives. “A healthy lifestyle is key for both young and old. It is however more important to introduce this routine to the young ones, hoping that they will adhere to it as they grow up,” she said. The Modimolle-based athletics club is home to many locals who are passionate about healthy living. It has been proven that exercising frequently and getting in shape can reduce the risk of suffering from, among others, heart attacks, high blood pressure and also reduce anxiety and depression.

Children’s Day is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of November. As a build-up to the main event, the local children marched down the streets of Phagameng township, carrying placards displaying messages condemning child abuse. Messages such as “Say no to child abuse”

were conveyed through placards. The march was organised by Childline Limpopo in conjunction with the non-profit organisation, Limpopo Poverty Alleviation. Childline Limpopo training officer, Nelson Letoka, said the main objective was to raise awareness about abuse and to urge members of the community to break the silence. “We have realised that in most instances children and parents are afraid to report these cases, especially if the perpetrator is someone who is very close to the family,” he said. The main event was hosted by the office of the Limpopo Premier, Stanley

Manamela discouraged the youngsters, most of them primary school learners, to stay away from drugs and engaging in sexual activities at a young age. The Modimolle team shared the spoils with their Rapotokwane counterparts, after playing to 0-all stalemate at Tankeng grounds. Celtic FC head coach, Andre Mavulula, said they were hoping to snatch maximum points, but unfortunately luck was on their side. “We are now preparing for our away match with Pirates. Bela Bela is like home away from home. I have told the boys that they need to go out there and play like they are on their home-ground, and focus on getting a positive result,” he said. On the other hand, Rapotokwane Qualitho FC will be hosting Mookgophong Junior

Stars FC. Rapotokwane Qualitho FC team manager, Reginald Mahlangu, acknowledged his team had not been doing well in the league this season. He told The BEAT that for the past three seasons his team had been on a roll, and that they are working hard to reclaim their form. “Our aim is to move up to third position by the end of the first round. One point away from home is not a bad result. We need to start winning games, and not allow complacency to distract us,” he said. Modimolle Home Defenders FC also shared the spoils with Vaalwater Boys 2 Men FC in a 2-all draw thriller. Log leaders Diesel N Dust FC, who played to a 1-all draw with Modimolle Bussel FC, will visit Troublemakers FC in Modimolle on Saturday. Bussel FC will visit Boys 2 Men FC in Vaalwater.

TK Mashaba Registration has been thrown open for the 2018 edition of the Danone Nations Cup. The tournament is open to soccer players between the ages of 10 and 12. Schools across the country were invited to become part of the 2018 Danone Nations Cup, which has been reputed to touch the lives of 2-million youngsters worldwide annually. Themba Tshabalala from South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) said this year’s tournament would be the 19th edition of the competition.

South African schools have been participating since the tournament’s inception and the country has won the world title three times, in the years 2003, 2007 and 2009. Tshabalala said the preliminary stages of the Danone Nations Cup were scheduled to start at cluster level, through to the district, the provincial and then the national finals. The team winning the national finals would represent the country in the Danone Nations World Cup Finals. Last year, a total of a whopping 2 700 schools nationwide registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament.

It was anticipated that schools due to register for the 2018 Danone Nations Cup would include Limpopo’s Benny’s Sports Development and Academy, which was the 2016 national champions, and defending

The fledgling Bela-Bela Academy has sent out an invitation to wannabe soccer stars to go for trials at Moloto Stadium on Saturday, 11 November. Part of the strict requirements were that candidates should be studying at least one of the vernacular languages at school, namely Sepedi, Setswana and XiTsonga. Applicants should be in Grades 8 to 11. Although the academy was scheduled to be launched only at the begining of next year, the trials were being hosted as part of the build-up towards the grand launch. The trials would target soccer players from the age categories of under-15, under-17 and under-19. According to Sam Modise, founder of the academy, players were advised to bring along their IDs, own playing kit, and food. The trials were to be conducted free of charge. He said the challenge in terms of youngsters from outside Bela-Bela wishing to participate was that as much as the academy has acquired a house as accomodation, it was still looking for a sponsor for basiscs like bedding. Any business or individual wishing to assist is advised to contact 072 025 0469, or go to the Facebook page Bela-Bela Academy, for more information.

champions, Mophela Primary School from KwaZulu-Natal. The format for entering the competition was flexible and differed from one country to the other. In South Africa the preliminaries were being staged in the form of inter-

school games, while other countries sent their top under12 team at club level, while others send their national under-12 squad. Bela-Bela’s Blaauwboschkuil Primary School’s under-12 soccer team reached the provincial finals in 2013.
