P. 4 The Molwantwa family were grieved by the need to dig their stillborn daughter’s grave themselves after municipal officials failed to do so. Photo supplied Lizzy Bapela Nothing in the world can improve the experience of a family who has to bury a child. Some things, however, can make the experience infinitely worse, as the family Molwantwa found on Thursday, 10 September when they arrived at the cemtery in Modimolle to bury their stillborn baby girl, who was not given a name. Although they had allegedly phoned on
Wednesday, 9 September, to arrange for a grave to be dug for the funeral on the 10th, they arrived to find that no grave had been dug. With no municipal employees in sight, the family borrowed shovels from a nearby group who were building a mausoleum and dug the baby’s grave themselves. The mother of the baby, Rachel Molwantwa, told the BEAT that they had phoned the municipal official in charge of the graveyard to find out what the confusion was. “We spoke to Fannie Rihlanfhu, who promised to send staff to the site. They arrived
too late, as we had already sorted out a grave. I spoke to him again on Monday and asked for a meeting to discuss the matter, and he said that I will not be refunded. I feel powerless and confused. I’m going through a lot and do not feel the need for more stress,” said the grieving mother. The grave was dug by two family members, Sunnyboy and William. In his response, Rihlanfhu said that the Molwantwa family booked for Wednesday and did not arrive, resulting in another family using the grave dug for the Molwantwas. He
said that there was some misunderstanding among the parties involved and the family proceeded to dig their own grave even though the municipality was arranging for their staff members to assist them. “They dug the wrong grave number,” he said. “We have arranged to meet with her and discuss the matter further and reach a solution. Refunding her is not a problem, as long as we can sit and talk and take it from there,” said Rihlanfhu. He said that the comment was not official as he is not an official media spokesperson.

Spring reveals new plans for Youth against Crime Justin Steyn Local charity group Youth against Crime says that they will be taking a firm stand against alcohol and substance abuse in Bela-Bela. According to their chairperson, Esrom Nkwinikwa, they have planned a heap of activities in which they want young people in Bela-Bela to get involved. “We will have things like gospel groups, poets and artists who can entertain the youth. They can also get involved in these activities as well,” he said.
Nkwinikwa said that they have teamed up with Sammy Moshidi, a local artist and have managed to get 30 youngsters involved in their projects. Moshidi said that he was inspired to get more involved in youth activities after witnessing the xenophobic attacks that plagued the country this year. Moshidi said that the project will also involve the St Phillip church as well as his own musical group. Those who would like to participate in these activities can contact Moshidi on 079 480 7081.

The Bela-Bela police received information that the suspect was in possession of motor vehicle parts and followed on the leads. Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto said that a complaint of theft from a motor vehicle was lodged on Tuesday, 1 September. The complainant alleged that he parked his Mazda sedan at the back of his house at about 21:30. The next day he went to check on his car, he discovered that several items were missing from the car. The police confirmed that the missing items include calibre set, CV joints and wheel bearings. The suspect appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court this week. * A man appeared before the BelaBela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 14 September on a charge of arson following an incident that happened on Sunday, 5 September. Constable Maleto said that the man was detained for allegedly setting his ex-girlfriend’s shack on fire after the two broke up. The complainant alleged that everything was still in order when she left her shack on the night in question. She said that at approximately 03:00 in the morning of the next day her sister phoned to inform her that her shack was on fire. The complainant told the police in a statement that her ex-boyfriend threatened to burn the shack several times because she broke up with him. Constable Maleto said that the ex was traced and arrested on Friday, 11 September, in the township.
TK Mashaba A Bela-Bela car guard has been arrested on five counts of burglary in the Bela-Bela CDB. Sello Themba, who used to assist customers at various businesses to park their cars, was due to reappear this week before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court for formal bail application. Themba has been linked to two burglaries at the Bela-Bela Post Office, two burglaries at
Unie Slaghuis, one burglary at a local hair salon, and one at Shoprite. According to Bela-Bela police spokesperson Colonel Abel Phetla, Themba has been linked to all of the above cases after investigations by the police. Two weeks ago the Post Office was closed for half a day after staff and management found broken window panes when they reported for work. Within three days, the Post Office was
burgled again. Nothing major was taken at the time, but 82 packages were torn open and damaged, said Sonja Smalberger. “They only tore open most of the small package mails looking for goods, but didn’t find much to take,” said Smalberger. Smalberger told The BEAT during the incident that the wall of the building was high, and that it was thought that the suspect must have neighbouring business to get inside their premises.

According to information received a man, who has been identified only as William, was attacked and killed by twelve community members on Friday, 28 August, after he was accused of stealing from the community. Pule Sebolao, a paramedic from the provincial EMS, said that they were called to the scene, and found that the victim had been badly beaten with knobkieries, and was surrounded by members of the local community. “When we arrived at the scene we saw that this man was unconscious and tied up with rope. He was bleeding heavily. Several bystanders

Twelve people have been arrested because of their alleged involvement in the murder. Thokozile Nkosi (48), Johannes Semetsing (35), Mapule Mabosela, Tlou Sebatjani (52), Jack Nkwana (28), Mpho Moseamedi (25), John Chabalala (32), Nhlenyane Mashiyo (48), Amos Matlala (35), Rachel Tshabalala (26), Reuben Chabalala and Collen Chabalala (21) have all been arrested for their alleged involvement in the brutal murder. Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela municipality said they are still working on upgrading the town’s municipal library but assured the public that this will be done soon. According to the municipal spokesperson Matome Sebelebele, library staff is still working on getting all the new and old books on their computer systems in order for the public to be borrowed. “We are still recording all the books on the system and we are about ninety percent finished,” he said. The library itself was damaged in a fire in late 2005. Most of the books were salvaged but the library has since not been open for the public to borrow books. After a meeting between the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture and the municipality in March this year, it was decided to upgrade the library.
The department delivered several tables, chairs and new bookcases to the library. New books had also apparently been sent and an Internet station has also been made available for public use. “I’m not absolutely sure when the upgrades will be completed but we will inform the public so they can borrow books as planned,” said Sebelebele.

The road map follows the two-day engagements conducted by the Minister after violent protests in the area regarding the mine and its employment criteria recently. Leaders of the concerned communities, traditional authorities, organized labour, the Limpopo Department of Education, Mogalakwena Local Municipality, Waterberg District Municipality, Human Rights Commission and the mine’s management. Departmental spokesperson Phuti Mabelebele said that they noted that not all Mapela community representatives were present during the crafting of the road map. She added that however, it has been agreed that those communities not represented will be allowed to participate in the task team set up by Minister Ramathlodi. The Minister has urged the platinum-rich community and the mine to work together to ensure that the agreed road map is implemented for peace and stability. The signed road map outlines among others that the Seritarita Secondary School be opened on Monday, 14 September and all blasting schedules closer to the school must be discussed and agreed upon between community leaders of Leruleng and Scheming and should not interfere with the
Mineral Resources Minister Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi and Mogalakwena mayor Parks Sebatjana. Photo supplied learning process. And that a task team must be established with immediate effect, composed of representatives of all affected villages. The South African Human Rights Commission will continue to engage
representatives of the villages that are not represented to ensure that they join the task team. The commission will also liaise with stakeholders to ensure that the task team meetings take place. Meanwhile, the Mogalakwena Residents Association (MRA) and the Community Structures of Mapela Community held an urgent press conference on Friday, 11
September, which was led by the leadership of Mapela communities. “The purpose was to update the public on developments around the crisis in Mapela Villages caused by the arrogant mine, the confused intervention by Minister Ramatlhodi and the programme of action for the ongoing strike in Mapela villages,” said MRA Spokesperson Thintha Mokhonoana.

Government speaks out on Lephalale riots
Lephalale mayor councillor Jack Maeko. Photo: Lizzy Bapela
Lizzy Bapela The Limpopo Provincial Government have said that they strongly condemn the gross vandalism and damage to public and private property by some members of the public during protests which escalated in Lephalale recently. Angry community members in Marapong set fire to several busses, a police satellite station and municipal buildings on Monday, 7 September, demanding more job opportunities for local residents. Provincial Government spokesperson Phuti Seloba said that public protests in the province are becoming increasingly violent, and that these criminal activities overshadow the genuine concerns which are raised by members of the public. Seloba encouraged residents of the areas of the province faced with community violence to join hands with the police and the provincial government to control such criminal activity and bring the perpetrators to justice. Limpopo Premier Stanley Mathabatha said that traditional leaders, civic and religious leaders must work with communities and the police to restore order in the communities and to ensure that perpetrators face the full might of law. He added that the
disruption of schooling will not be tolerated, because this is a violation of the children’s basic right to education. “The provincial government continues to engage with communities on a regular basis and we have established channels through which people can interact with us without violating the rights of others. The government observes its citizens a right to protest but encourages peaceful protest where genuine concerns are raised,” said Mathabatha. The Lephalale Local Municipality also condemned the incident, highlighting that the local mayor Councillor Jack Maeko has always championed the cause of the local labour force. The mayor met with stakeholders on several occasions to discuss the concerns of local residents pertaining to job losses and the employment of local workers. Municipal spokesperson Valerie Cillers said that it is important to note that Lephalale has an unemployment rate of 22.9% which is below the provincial average. “The municipality urges the community to stay calm and to refrain from violence. The council and management will continue to work with stakeholders to ensure that local residents are afforded opportunities within the energy and mining sector,” Cilliers said.
Marakele National Park hosts the 2015 SA National Parks week launch Lizzy Bapela Marakele National Park situated in Thabazimbi was in the spotlight as the host of this year’s launch of the South African National Parks week. The event was held on Sunday, 13 September and was officiated by Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa. South African National Parks (SANParks) initiated SA National Parks week in 2006 under the theme “Know Your National Parks”. The aim was to afford South African citizens free access to all the national parks that are under its management country wide. Departmental spokesperson Divhani Maremba said that since its inception, National Parks Week, has seen well over 170 000 day visitors in all participating parks. According to General Manager of the Northern Region Property Mokoena, 2014 saw an increased number of visitors at all the parks in the Northern Region and they are hoping that this year will be better. He
added that again this year they have a full program ranging from traditional dances and walking trails to keep visitors entertained throughout the week. At Marakele National Park, the Minister officially opened the long awaited Bontle tented units, which are a new product that SANParks is offering to its clients. This Park is home to Africa’s Big Five and the largest colony of the Cape vulture. Other Parks in the region such will also be open to the public during the week and those who wish to visit some of the parks can enjoy guided walks and educational tours around them. Mokoena said that visitors can also bring along picnic baskets to enjoy in the lovely sun rays whilst appreciating the scenery in these parks. He highlighted that access to the parks is free during the SA National Parks Week and free entry excludes accommodation and any activities that people may want to participate in whilst in the park. Mokoena said that however, all South Africans will have to produce their green bar-coded identity documents when visiting any of the parks.

The song is titled ‘After a Night like This’, and will be available from iTunes in a few weeks. Motsepe, who was born and raised in Bela-Bela, is finally living her dream as a musician. In her childhood, her parents lived in Johannesburg, so she travelled a lot between the city and Bela-Bela. She always had a musical upbringing, since her grandmother used to sing at church and her father used to love performing Michael Jackson songs. On the other hand, her mother was a music collector so she was under the influence of Luther Vandros, Alliyah, the Backstreet Boys, Babyface, and others. LETTER TO THE EDITOR Malesela Musana, Bela-Bela resident, writes: Our struggle as successfully liberated us, but we are a long way still from the promised land. We are still walking through hardship to the prised government, but so long as our councillors are deliberately ignoring their responsibilities toward their communities; so long as the cunning councillors are still looting State funds to fill their own coffers; so long as the councils in our municipalities abuse the majority and protect their corrupt and negligent members — so long does our struggle continue. We shall continue our struggle until the voice of the people may be heard and our municipalities comply with the law as enshrined in Chapter 7, Section 152 of the Constitution. A Setswana proverb is a good metaphor for today’s South Africa: ‘The milk comes spotlessly clean from the cow — the filth comes with the one bringing the bucket.’ The cow is the government, and the one bringing the bucket is made up of all those corrupt and vile politicians, government officials, and councilors. The municipalities themselves, both political and administrative structures, are largely part of the naughty collective which brings filthy buckets to spoil the work of the cow. These are enemies of the government of the day, selfish and ravenous fellows, feeble-minded people with big-for-nothing heads or smart-for-nothing prestige. What is important to a citizen is patriotism, wisdom, and readiness to share in what you have obtained. With these features, a people’s person must liberate himself from entanglements of a material nature and volunteer to sacrifice himself to protect the vulnerable and to liberate those who cannot liberate themselves. Together, we can build heaven. If we fail to build a government of our liking, then foreigners will come and build the government of their liking, and we will become slaves in our own land.

Modimolle artist tells SA stories through art
Frans Noko (seated) and Phillip Phele display the paper Mache artwork. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Mzamane Ringane Modimolle visual artist Frans Noko has found a creative way of telling SA stories though his paper-maché artwork. Noko uses a mixture of old newspapers and flour to create historic sculptures and other things that includes decorative accessories. Noko has been doing his work for more than 10 years since 1995, and caught the attention of many locals when he created an imitation of the 2010 FIFA World Cup trophy. Apart from paper mache work, Noko also produces key-holders, pouches, handbags and sandals using old leather and animal skin. He said in the past 10 years as a visual artist, he has never received any form of assistance from either the government or the private sector. “My love for art started while I was still at school. When we were given different artistic tasks, I
used to create things that always impressed my fellow classmates. They encouraged me to follow my passion and I ended up falling in love with art. I take art as a gift that was spiritually bestowed on me. It’s like I’m being driven by something from within,” he said. Noko said he always tries to exhibit his work of art whenever he gets a chance to do so at local events, but said that the minimal support he receives makes it difficult for him to succeed. “My main objective is to share the history of our country through art crafting. At the same time I am trying to restore our culture and to also remind our people where we come from. Our elders used to tell interesting stories through art, and that’s what I’m also intending to do,” Noko said. Among his creations is the face of internationally acclaimed struggle icon Nelson Mandela. Noko says he was toying around with an idea of erecting a statue of Mandela, which he intends to unveil next year on Mandela Day.

Mzamane Ringane Young and talented participants of Lephalale TVET (Technical Vocational Education and Training) College at the Modimolle campus are hard at work, in preparation for the national competitions scheduled for the Eastern Cape from 22 to 27 August. The gumboot dance and hip-hop dance groups are expected to represent Limpopo at the national leg of the competitions, following their outstanding performance at the provincial competitions in Groblersdal last month. The team leaders for both groups are confident that they will represent the province well, and also vowed to bring home prizes at the national competitions. Hip-hop group leader Livhuwani Prudence Mulaudzi said they started off light, and with limited facilities, but then they managed to excel. Mulaudzi said she was thankful to God for giving them an opportunity, strength and motivation to go out there and do their best. She believes this was an achievement for her
school, but added that they were carrying a bigger responsibility on their shoulders as they will be representing the entire province this time around. Mulaudzi said the support from all members of the team and the staff at the college helps them to approach the competitions with much confidence. Motlatsi Rahlola who is in charge of the gumboots group, said that they are delighted and they feel blessed to have reached the national leg of the competitions. “We were able to reach this stage because we always worked as a team. Working together as a collective helps us to understand each other and to also be solid,” she said. Support centre official at the Modimolle campus Piet Motsomane said the young people at the college are always cooperating and welldisciplined, and that is one of the reasons why they are doing well whenever they compete with others. Motsomane said he also believes that they are going to do well in the Eastern Cape, since their performance in both the inter-campuses and provincials was good.

Netball development players go to provincial level
Yster United and Real Madrid in a tugof-war over a player TK Mashaba Yster United owner Moloko Seopa and Real Madrid owner John Koka are locked in a tug-of-war over a player after Koka alleged that a Real Madrid player was poached to play for United in the play-offs. Kagiso Selemela, who was playing for Real Madrid in the SAB League, was fielded by Yster United during the promotional playoffs which were held at Mokopane two weeks ago. Surprised Madrid owner Koka confronted Seopa over the change, and a case of assault was opened after the two exchanged words. According to Koka, who talked to The BEAT this week, Seopa failed to communicate with him about the player or his clearance, and was surprised to see his player on the field during the playoffs. “I talked to him and we once exchanged players, and I bought six pairs of soccer
boots as per our agreement, but when I asked him why he didn’t communicate with me he told me I am stupid,” said Koka. Koka said that they only exchanged words, and is surprised that the subject has now proceeded to court. “I feel as though I should be taking him to court for corruption,” he said. SAFA’s Regional Executive Officer Refiloe Khoza said that she was not aware of the matter, as it has not yet been brought to her attention. “I will respond if I receive more information, but procedurally a player does have to get clearance from his team before he can get a card for the new team he is joining,” said Khoza. In the meantime, the player is said to have impressed National First Division Team Baroka FC, who are now also looking to add him to their squad. Selemela and Seopa could not be reached for comment.
