A mob of angry municipal workers barricaded the Thabo Mbeki Street and Nelson Mandela Street cross-roads with burning tyres in downtown Mookgophong on Tuesday 29 May and continued on Wednesday 30 May. The workers’ spokesperson, Ernie Mbiza, told The BEAT’s sister newspaper, Die Pos/The Post, that the workers were upset that their salaries were not paid in time. He said the workers were shocked when they received a notice on Friday 25 May that they should be patient and that they would be paid. The striking workers demanded that municipal manager, Mapule Mokoko, attend to their grievances. Mokoko was not readily available for comment, and was reportedly in Polokwane, at the time of going to print. After receiving the disputed notice, all hell broke loose as the angry workers emptied dust bins on Nelson Mandela Street. Stop signs at the corner of Nelson Mandela Street and Fourth Street were also vandalised. The chanting and singing workers burnt tyres in the vicinity of the local hotel and in front of the Waltkon store. The protesters did not take kindly to journalists and spectators who attempted to take pictures.
Traffic along the affected streets was diverted by the police into alternative routes. Mbiza charged that the workers were angry in that their debit orders could not be processed in time, among these their medical bills. One of the workers, who chose to remain anonymous, said the problem with the late payment of salaries dated back to February, whereby they engaged the municipality about the matter. In her response, ModimolleMookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden said going forward the authorities would ensure workers would be paid in time. “Last week the workers were in direct engagements with the municipal manager inside her office about the matter,” she said. Around 13:00 the workers were engaged in talks with Councillor Hercules Louw and other councillors at the Mookgophong police station. Workers gathered in small groups, waiting for feedback from the meeting, but still continued to sporadically barricade the streets. At around 14:00 Mbiza said it was promised the workers would receive their salaries by Tuesday night. By 15:00 the roads were cleared and traffic moved smoothly through the town, flared uip again the next day. Residents have reported water supply disruptions, which could be as a result of the strike action.

Healers’ new executive
Mzamane Ringane The new leadership of the Waterberg regional Traditional Health Practitioners (THP) was unveiled against the backdrop of pounding cowhide drums following elections on Thursday 24 May. The colourful events were held at the OR Tambo Hall in Modimolle. Lephalale-based traditional healer and clergyman, Jonas Seepe, emerged the chairperson, with Karel Kgabo of BelaBela as his deputy. Modimolle-based traditional practitioner, Elsie Hlongwane, was elected secretary, while Jeanette Baloyi of Mogalakwena was elected deputysecretary. The portfolio of treasurer went to Minah Tlhabadira of Thabazimbi. A total of 10 additional members were also elected into the 15-member executive committee. Acting Waterberg District Executive Mayor Freddy Hlungwane said the relevance of the event was that it was hosted at a time the broader continent and the Diaspora were commemorating Africa Day.
He further encouraged traditional practitioners to work hand-in-glove with health authorities, more so on specialised fields such as HIV-AIDS. Hlungwane said the authorities wished to applaud traditional practitioners for conducting responsible initiation schools with zero casualties. “As we celebrate this achievement and to the newly-elected leadership, we say you must be able to deal with bogus traditional practitioners within the district, who cause death and undermine the true practice of our heritage,” he said. Hlungwane surprised many of the delegates when he led them in the singing of a traditional ritual song. In his acceptance speech, Seepe said traditional healers needed to be patient and respectful towards one another, so as to realise the objectives of THP. He pleaded with the health authorities to continue to provide workshops for THP members to empower them with more knowledge. Waterberg District health department district manager, Grace Bulanga, said formalizing their structures would make it easy for government to engage with traditional health practitioners.

Morerwa, like Greg Morukuladi, Sampie Modise and Sello “Kaizer” Raborolo, all have fond memories of schoolboy AB de Villiers, who has sent shockwaves allround, after announcing his intention to retire from international cricket. “The whole de Villers family, including his dad Dr AB de Villers, were complete sportsmen, playing golf and tennis too,” explained Raborolo, currently a professional caddy. He said that the de Villers family was known for a special whistling method, and swore that should anyone stand behind a

Raborolo remembered vividly how the mother of the family, Millie, used to bring the boyhood AB along for a game of tennis. Morukuladi, now employed in the Extended Public Works Programme (EPWP), said he remembered the cricketer giving older players such as the lawyer and fine golfer, Dave Williams, a run for their money. The EPWP man, who was the last operations manager at the now collapsed Royal Northlands Golf Estate (previously Warmbaths Golf Course), said the family played sporting codes ranging from golf, to tennis and even bowling. Modise, now doing menial work around the township, said he personally carried the golf bag for the celebrated de Villiers.

Lizzy Bapela The DA in Bela-Bela is pulling at all stops to retain Bela-Bela’s hotly-contested Ward 9 ahead of the by-elections scheduled for Tuesday 17 July. DA leader Mmusi Maimane has since took time from his tight schedule to campaign for the party in Spa Park and Koppewaai on Sunday 27 May. The ward was vacated by former DA councillor Kobus van der Merwe, who has since relocated to the Western Cape George. Maimane visited hot on the heels of
another whistle-stop tour by parliamentarian, Desriee van der Walt, and DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle. The DA leader, who has controversially self-modelled himself as the new Madiba, addressed a packed Spa Park Community Hall. The DA leader promised sweeping changes with regards to the plight of the Spa Park and Koppewaai community, should the party retain the ward. Local residents used the visit to sensitise Maimane about the closure of the local health clinic in the year 2015. Van der Walt promised to present the residents’ petition to parliament.
Non-fiction debut for Rachel Makutu
Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden has announced several interventions to arrest backlogs at traffic stations in the two towns. She said in a statement measures were put in place dating back to Monday 21 May, whereby the traffic station in Modimolle was expected to be open for appointments and testing for learner’s licences. Van Statden said applicants would be assisted on producing an eye test certificate from a registered practitioner. “This comes after calls were logged to the Helpdesk at the department of transport, during the middle of April 2018, for a faulty server through which the eye test machines are connected,” she explained. The mayor explained that calls were logged with the Department of Transport in Polokwane, as the owner of the E-Natis system (including the computers and

TK Mashaba Rachel Makutu (23) of Bela-Bela has finally published a book she has started researching and compiling at the tender age of 12. “The Marriage Contradiction” explores couples who enter into matrimony for all the wrong reasons. The ambitious businesswoman said she had compiled the book non-stop, until she took a
breather in the year 2016. She paid special homage to her family, who she thanked for contributing funds to the cost of publishing. Makutu studied electrical engineering for a period of three years, but dropped out because of her growing passion for motivational speaking. She said the book was a chronicle of the lives of ordinary people, many of whom took marriage vows for completely wrong reasons. “I drew my inspiration from observing the behaviour of fellow humans. Watching TV also helped in the development of the idea for the book,” she said. Makutu is a proud born-and-bred Bela-Bela resident who matriculated at the local Maope High School. She studied engineering at an institution in the Limpopo capital of Polokwane. Makutu also obtained a diploma in education in Gauteng.

Lizzy Bapela A private hospital from Benoni in Ekurhuleni arrived all the way from Gauteng to donate mattresses to Bela-Bela Hospital. The Sumnshine Private Hospital leadership was in town on Wednesday 23 May, off-loading a total of 24 ward mattresses and three baby delivery mattresses, for the benefit of the local maternity ward. All the mattresses are impermeable and anti-bacterial. Bela-Bela Hospital spokesperson, Bhuti Moagi, and clinical manager, Dr Dan Sithole, welcomed the visitors on behalf of

The donation was in line with the late Nelson Mandela’s centenary commemorations nationwide.

As a main source of income, CoolPixie, who is also in possession of a journalism and media studies diploma, is working in the retail industry in Pretoria. “What makes things easier is that my employers are understanding and they are supportive of my goals,” he said.

The mayor said Mookgophong residents could access assistance to renew vehicle licences, do roadworthy tests as well as learners’ licence appointments and testing in Modimolle. “We are in the process to negotiate with staff members from Mookgophong to make themselves available in Modimolle, to assist Mookgophong residents with the registration of new vehicles,” she added.

The popular DJ Mawela from Metro FM was booked to make an appearance at Lerato’s Grill House on Saturday 2 June. He will be supported by local deejays. Metro FM’s DJ Lulo Cafe was expected to make his first appearance at Tsongo’s Chisanyama in Modimolle on Saturday, 2 June, for his The 5 Star Show.
He enters the Modimolle club circuit after a successful stint at Bela-Bela’s Marks Chisanyama. The AudioGasm radio show host would play alongside Capricorn FM DJ Thabang Banks, Cappuccino, MotionDee, Mohamed and local deejays. The gig in Modimolle will be the second visit by DJ Thabang Banks Marks Corner Chisanyama has been busy of late, bringing in popular deejays such as Metro FM’s Katsaitis, DJ Christos, DJ Man, Naked DJ and Paul Mtirara.

Lizzy Bapela Rooiberg’s Itireleng Secondary School Grade 8 learners have triumphed at the proverbial coalface of firefighting. Grade 7, 8 and 9 learners participated during activities facilitated by the Working on Fire initiative on Wednesday 23 May. Itireleng Secondary School educator, Lesego Matlhare, said the event was about awareness on the care of the environment, with specific emphasis on the impact of veldfires. On the day, learners in Grade 7, 8 and 9 competed against each other in various activities such as debate, drama, poetry and

choral music, with the winners taking home trophies and medals. Grade 8 learners dominated and scooped all prizes, with Katlego Mashiane scooping a trophy after emerging as the best speaker of the day in the debate category. Tshireletso Makgale emerged the runnerup, with Jerry Mphamo at number three. Lesetja Ndoweni came out tops in poetry, also scooping himself a medal. Itireleng Secondary School headmaster, Ally Pole, and his teaching staff also sang praises for volunteer mathematics educator, Rajesh Pasungili. From time to time Pasungili drives all the way from Pretoria to teach maths at the school.

TK Mashaba Upwards of 681 potential voters visited registration stations hosted by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) in Bela-Bela last Saturday 27 May. Of the total of 681 who touched base with the registration stations, 203 visited to reregister their particulars, with a total of 415 on inspection of the voters’ roll, while 63 registered as new voters. The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the DA have already dispatched
heavyweights to settlements around the contested ward 9. DA leader Mmusi Maimane addressed a packed community hall in Spa Park and Koppewaai. EFF leader, Julius Malema, was also reportedly in engagements with party supporters at Bela-Bela’s Elephant Spring, partly to nudge them on and to speak about the broader programmes of the red berets. Contesting parties were expected to unveil their candidates for the ward 9 by-elections, scheduled for Tuesday 17 July. The ward became vacant after the resignation of DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe. Waterberg IEC supervisor, Malome Nkoana, said potential voters could still register or update the registration details, by visiting the IEC offices at their Bela-Bela Local Municipality on weekdays and during office hours.

Waterberg’s jack of all trades TK Mashaba Bela-Bela’s Jack Maluleka has been elected into the executive committee of the allpowerful South African Football Association (Safa). He told The BEAT in a recent interview that for him it has been a long journey in his endeavours as a soccer player and administrator. Maluleka was at one time the youngest player for the most popular Warmbaths Atlanta Kids, at the age of 15. Warmbaths Atlanta Kids campaigned in the
Soccer League (Bopsol). Thereafter he moved to the Tshwane University of Technology, whereby he was elevated to chairperson of the sports committee for the Students’ Representative Council (SRC). Maluleka was better known in Bela-Bela as a complete athlete, remembered for his blistering pace on the athletics track. He was part of the South African team during the Olympics in Japan in the year 1996. Maluleka has also played for the Soweto giants, Kaizer Chiefs reserve side from 1996 to 1997.

No politics about my musical ol’ comrades from The Editor from halcyon days Letter Johnny Masilela Those of us who grew up under the threat of schoolroom swishing canes were subjected to morning assembly, followed by a paramilitary march to our respective classrooms. One of the renditions from the school’s brass band was called Ol’ Comrades, which has nothing whatsoever to do with the politics of the broad church, blue wave or red berets. The Ol’ Comarades I hereby refer to was a piece blurted out by barefooted schoolboys clad in khaki, producing magic on drums and various wind instruments. Marching along at the front were barefooted schoolgirls wearing white hand-gloves With this in mind, I am going to borrow a plain English phrase inspired by my personal experience in recent days. The catchphrase is called names-dropping. That is, I am going to boast about having reestablished contact with some of my better known ol’ comrades. It all started after The Sunday Independent — a publication targeted at the highest end of the newspaper reading market — commissioned me to pay tribute to the late Malombo Jazzmen sensational crooner and acoustic guitarist, Dr Phillip Nchipi Tabane. In the thousand-word article, I traced back the earlier days of malombo music, whereby I observed that as a youngster in the Pretoria township of Mamelodi, I watched Mr Aphane and his Northern Transvaal homeboys taking to the streets to campaign for him to become mayor. We the supposed klevahs (streetwise) lined up the sidewalk to laugh at Mr Aphane and company, as they hit the streets whistling and dancing to their Sepedi rural “dinaka” and “malopo” repertoire. It was when Tabane and his malombo duet
partner, Gabriel “Mabe” Thoejane, were invited to the US Newport Jazz Festival that we had to take notice. Mr Aphane’s homebrewed dance and song had become an international hit! As part of the pre-briefing to write for The Sunday Independent, acting editor, Lebogang Seale, nudged me to source the comment of, among others, Hotstix Mabuse, Khaya Mahlangu of Sakhile fame, Vusi Mahlasela, Sello Galane and paintbrush artist and poet, Lefifi Tladi. Eat your heart out, dear reader, for I am about to name-drop like nobody’s business here. I could not immediately get hold of Vusi as he was busy with rehearsals at the Johannesburg Theatre. I dropped a voice message, knowing very well that Vusi was too humble to ignore anyone’s message, especially from an ol’ comrade. Indeed in no time my mobile rang and it was my ol’ comrade, Vusi, on the line. We spoke briefly about the good ol’ days in Mamelodi, when Vusi sang soprano (like a schoolgirl!) for the Moretele Primary School eisteddfod choir. Then we got into the business of how in his boyhood he heard Tabane playing on transistor radio, and how Vusi could not believe his ears when an uncle told him the guitarist was a resident of Mamelodi. Sello Galane chose to borrow from a doctoral thesis he did on Tabane and malombo music, dating back to the original Malombo Jazzmakers featuring drummer, Julian Bahula, and wind instrumentalist, Abbey Cindi. I did speak informally to both Hotstix Mabuse and Khaya Mahlangu, but my two ol’ comrades could not respond in time for The Sunday Independent’s strict deadlines.

TK Mashaba The Bela-Bela Soccer Academy was already looking beyond the local football association league towards the higher Waterberg SAB Regional League. The youngsters played a total of seven fixtures, winning them all. Their remaining Bela-Bela Local Football Association (LFA) fixtures are just a formality, as they have already qualified for promotion. The Bela-Bela Soccer Academy remained
at the summit of the LFA. The players are nurtured by some of the town’s best former soccer players, Bina Maseko, who plied his trade at Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC, and academy owner, Sam Modise. Modise is a former player of Diesel ‘n Dust FC, too. In its most recent fixture, Bela-Bela Soccer Academy were 3-1 runaway winners against Bela-Bela Platinum Stars FC. Modise alluded that the academy was looking beyond the LFA into life at the higher echelons of regional football.
PSL status beckons for Black Leopards Mzamane Ringane The technical difficulty in reporting for a weekly newspaper is that from time to time major events break shortly after deadline. For instance, the fate of Thohoyandoubased Black Leopards FC was to be determined in a crucial promotional playoffs fixture against Jomo Cosmos FC for a match-up scheduled for 3pm, well after The BEAT deadline to send copy to the printers in Johannesburg. Therefore, all we can report is that by the time you read this, chances are that Black Leopards would have confirmed the team’s elevation to the multi-million Premier
Soccer League (PSL), or not. That brings us to the permutations. If by the time you read this, Black Leopards won against Jomo Cosmos, then PSL here we (Limpopo) come! But then to paraphrase the late celebrated soccer commentator, Cebo Manyapelo, there is no such a thing as “therefore” in soccer. In the event that Black Leopards drew against Jomo Cosmos, it then goes to the wire between the latter two teams. In the event that Jomo Cosmos won against Black Leopards, the former should need a single point from the fixture against Platinum Stars on Saturday 2 June to advance.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) in the Waterberg has named a squad of 18 players, who will represent the region at the provincial Under-21 trials. The venue and date for the provincial trials was still to be announced. The regional selections were held at Modimolle’s Ephraim Mogale Stadium on Sunday, 27 May. Waterberg’s finest players were selected by regional coach, Jan Masoga, assisted by a technical support team of other coaches. The players were selected during trials aimed at testing the performance, skills and quality of the players, drawn from various Local Football Associations (LFA)’s across the region. Masoga acknowledged the efforts taken by the LFA’s, in ensuring that they send players to participate in the selections. Among all the five LFA’s in the Waterberg, Thabazimbi was the only LFA which was not represented at the trials. “All the players who participated in the selections showed determination and the willingness to make it into the regional squad. We saw a lot of talent among these young players, but at the end of the day we had to select only 18 players,” he said. Masoga said apart from advancing to the provincial squad, the players stood a chance of realising their dreams of playing in the higher leagues, if they work hard and impress talent scouts during the interregional trials. He said the coaches, in conjunction with SAFA, will work around the clock to
support and further improve the readiness of the selected team, ahead of the provincial trials. At the provincial trials, a Limpopo squad will be selected to represent the province at the SAB Under-21 national trials.
