All roads lead to Modimolle Mzamane Ringane ANC heavyweight David Mabuza was expected to proverbially gallop into the Waterberg for an all-important January 8 birthday gathering, with the objective to celebrate the organisation’s 106th anniversary. But then the question on the lips of many in the home province was: would Mabuza give the slightest indication as to where he stands, with regards to the ANC President Ramaphosa on the one hand, and Jacob Zuma’s dwindling fortunes. The “renewal, unity and jobs” rally was scheduled for Sunday, 28 January. This indeed, is way more than a January 8 event, but the narrative is loaded with meaning. All this was billed for Modimolle’s Ephraim Mogale Stadium. At the NEC summit last weekend, delegates resolved to task the Top Six leadership of the ANC to manage Zuma’s imminent departure. There were a number of scenarios why Mabuza, and not the crowd favourite Ramophosa, was scheduled to appear at Modimolle. The first reason, according to a Waterberg ANC insider, was to “sell” Mabuza to the province, which suggests the Mpumalanga Premier has now officially endorsed Ramaphosa as the new sheriff in town. The second scenario could be simply that Ramaphosa was too engaged with turning around things on the economic front, such

Friday, January 26, at the Euphoria Golf Estate. On Saturday, 27 January, a gala dinner has been lined up at the Ranch Hotel in Polokwane. The ANC Limpopo leadership has

indicated busloads of supporters were expected to arrive from across the province, in a clear show of force in what is DA country, with regards to the composition of the Modimolle Local Council.

Pienaarsrivier cops on bribery charge suspended from duty by the SAPS Justin Steyn Two Pianaarsrivier police officers accused of allegedly accepting a bribe have been suspended from duty following their arrest on Tuesday, 9 Janaury. This was confirmed by Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, during an interview on Tuesday, 23 Janaury. “When an officer is under arrest or under investigation, that officer is automatically suspended. They are not allowed back on duty until the issue has been resolved, or a pending case against them has been finalised in a court of law,” Mojapelo said.

Justin Steyn The police in Bela-Bela have issued a warning regarding cash withdrawals from auto-teller machines. This came after an incident which occurred along Chris Hani Street where a woman, whose identity may not be revealed, was cornered by three men after withdrawing cash at a nearby ATM. Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said the incident happened during broad daylight on Saturday, 20 January. “It is believed that the victim was

observed while she was conducting her transaction at the ATM. She was allegedly followed by the criminals and they demanded money from her,” he said. Phetla said that the woman sought help from the community and they managed to apprehend one of the suspects. “The other two managed to flee in an unknown vehicle, and unfortunately the registration number of the vehicle was not captured by any one at the scene,” he explained. Phetla has since urged the community to come forward with any information relating to the incident, or similar.

were arrested after allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of R20 000 cash from motorist, Promise Funani.

The alleged crime took place during an apparent stop and search investigation, allegedly by the two policemen. Funani was found by the law enforcers transporting loads of cash, apparently in the boot of the car he traveled in. Later that day Funani opened a case of theft of cash totalling R210 000 from his vehicle, allegedly by the two police officers. The twosome first appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 10 January. Baloyi and Matlala have since been released on bail of R3 000 each. They were expected to make another appearance before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 23 February.

Prominent court cases continue into 2018 Justin Steyn Two of some of the most prominent court hearings from around the Waterberg continue into the year 2018. Murder accused, Hercules Delport, was expected to appear before the Modimolle Regional Court on Thursday, 25 January. Delport was one of two men who were being accused of murdering Tzaneen resident, Lawrence Makhanzi in 2015. Makhanzi’s severed arm was the first of many scattered limbs discovered near a water purification plant outside of Bela-Bela, in July of that year. At the time, Warrant officer Jannie Venter from the Bela-Bela SAPS said the limb was positively linked to Makhanzi, via DNA. It was believed at the time that

Delport and his accomplice, Clifford Cawood, abducted Makhanzi and allegedly murdered him at Bela-Bela. Delport is currently serving a 15-year sentence in Boksburg, Gauteng, for the illegal possession of a fire-arm. Cawood died while in custody in August 2016, while awaiting trial. In another prominent case, an interpreter had to be assigned for alleged narcotics dealer, Evy Ezeagbai, during his last court appearance on Tuesday, 12 November 2017. The Nigerian national was held in custody at the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional facility in Pretoria, for allegedly being in posession of 4.6Kg of CAT. Prior to his last appearance, Ezeagbai was released on bail of R30 000 by the Modimolle Regional Court on Thursday, 9 November last year. The case has been postponed to Monday, 29 January.

More suspects sought for Spa Park grassland murder Justin Steyn Police investigators have reason to believe more than one suspect could have been involved in the mysterious murder of a shop-owner who was found with his mouth and hands tied. Lieutenant-Colonel Phetla of the BelaBela police said more than one person might have been involved in the murder, which took place at Spa Park on Sunday, 7 January. He said the identity of the victim could not as yet be released, pending further investigations. The discovered body was apparently that of a shopkeeper between the ages of 30 and 42, and was discovered near bushes in an open grassland area.

“The victim was discovered with his feet and hands tied together and his mouth covered. The discovery was made by a passer-by who cannot be named,” Phetla said. In the recent interview, Phetla told The BEAT further investigations suggested a scuffle had broken out between the victim and his attackers. “Two or three men could have been involved in the murder, but this is yet to be determined by the DNA analysis report compiled at the scene,” he said. Phetla confirmed the possibility that the man was held captive before his murder. “He was found murdered at the scene where his body was found. Because he was restrained, it is plausable that he was held hostage for a day or two before the murder took place,” he added.

Waterberg ANC conference imminent Lizzy Bapela The provincial executive committee of the ANC in Limpopo was expected to decide on a new date for the holding of the everposponed Waterbeerg regional conference by early next month. With the PEC term of office scheduled to end sometime in February, the outgoing leadership said in a midweek communique it would make “a final determination” on the Waterberg regional conference at an ordinary meeting scheduled for early February. The Waterberg ANC has been postponed five times, due to sharp differences between rival factions over procedural issues. The PEC, the communique explained, had also decided that the Limpopo provincial

The Back-to-School Shoe Project kicked off on Monday, 21 January, in Phagameng. The organisers of the project are Francinah Lebogang Mashaba (Community Work Program), Past Felix Fambi, Mmoni Mathabatha (Community Work program), Ronny Makgetha (Hands On) and Janine Botha (Hands of Hope). Photo: Supplied The Community Work Programme (CWP), in partnership with the organisation Hands On and Hands of Hope, are passionate about the Modimolle community. The three groupings decided on running a Back-to-School Shoe Project this year, and the team was able to identify learners most in need of shoes. They believe learners need to be encouraged to continue with school, and that lack of shoes should not be a barrier in order to have a positive schooling experience.

conference would take place on 23rd, 24th and 25th March. “In terms of the Road Map to the 9th Provincial Conference, the membership cutoff date is 30th November 2017, and membership audits will be completed by 31st January 2018,” the PEC explained. The PEC added: “Branch general meetings and branch annual general meetings for nominations of delegates and leadership will take place from 06th February to 28th February.” Vhembe, Mopani and Sekhukhune regions had concluded their conferences and only Waterberg and Peter Mokaba, remained outstanding. “The PEC resolved that the Peter Mokaba Region will convene its regional conference during the month of March,” the communique added.

Lizzy Bapela The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality and the neighbouring BelaBela Local municipality have committed to move with urgency to fill up vacant posts for senior managers. The Modimolle-Mookgophong Local Municipality has placed advertisements inviting potential candidates to send in applications. The merged municipality has advertised vacant posts for the positions of municipal

manager, chief financial officer, as well as managers for technical and social services. Applications close on Friday, 26 January. Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden advised potential candidates to be mindful of the closing date on Friday. At Bela-Bela the vacant posts included that of the municipal manager, chief financial officer, and managers for social and community services, as well as corporate services. Conspicuous in his absence was outgoing municipal manager, Morris Maluleka, who has reportedly relocated in the Madibeng Local Municipality at the North West town of Brits. Bela-Bela Mayor, Jeremiah Ngobeni, said in his address during the 2018/2019 IDP meeting that the municipality planned to attend to all outstanding issues and projects within the municipality. He committed the council to fast-track service delivery. Among the issues he thrashed out during a meeting at the Multi Centre was the question of the filling up of vacant posts. The meeting was held on Friday, 17 November 2017. Municipal spokesperson, Kabelo Mosito, said short-listings and interviews for the posts had already been conducted, and the local authorities were awaiting the way forward from the Office of the MEC for CoGHSTA, Jerry Ndou.

Remember the Rastaman with the guitar, Bra Hugh?

Hugh Masekela in pensive mood with his famous trumpet in hand. Photo: Supplied

Johnny Masilela Forgive us word artists for stumbling over each other to pay tribute to music legend, Hugh Masekela. For my part I met Bra Hugh only once, during a chanced lunch at Gramadoelas Restaurant on The Market Theatre precinct at Newtown, Johannesburg. There he was, the greatest of wind instrumentalists, fork and knife in hand, having a hearty lunch, as I entered the place from a meeting of the National Arts Council, for which I was a board member. Nervously I went to Bra Hugh’s table, to introduce myself. The man was first visibly annoyed, but later agreed for a tete-a-tete. Rewind back to the Bophuthtswana capital of Mmabatho, whereby I was the news editor at The Mail newspaper, when a Rastaman with a guitar hanging from his shoulders, arrived at our offices. The man with the guitar said he had just

arrived from the Botswasna capital of Gaborone, where he was recording with Hugh Masekela. The name of the album was sensational indeed … “Standing on the mine dumps; Jobug City”. One track whose name fired my imagination was called “Picking up the pieces in Lobatse”, which the man with the guitar said was a potpourri of sounds borrowed from the Bangwato of Seretse Khama, the Khoi, Griqua and Nama tribespeople. We drove the man to a hillock outside Mafikeng, improvising on a picture of him “standing on the mine dumps”. Years later, when I met Bra Hugh at The Market Theatre, and mentioned the amazing Rastaman, Bra Hugh frowned, and again looked annoyed. Lo and behold, for it was to my utter shock, that I learned from the Struggle underground, that the Rastaman was a suspected agent of the Apartheid-era Security Branch!

Bela-Bela Stadium continues to stand unused in 2018 TK Mashaba

There were fears that the newly-built state-of-the-art Bela-Bela Stadium could be deteriorating into a White Elephant. The stadium this week remained unused and continued to stand majestic on the premises of the township’s Bela Bela High School. The official opening of the venue was recently once again delayed, due to vandalism. This week Bela-Bela Local Municipality parks and recreation officer, Mike Suke, urged the community to stop vandalising the stadium. He said incidents such as the theft of water pipes had delayed the official opening of the venue. The most affected perhaps, was the Bela-Bela Sports Academy, which had identified Bela-Bela Stadium as a potential centre of excellence. Academy founder Sam Modise lamented the delays, saying this affected youngsters who cried out for grassroots sports development. Suke added that the problem of vandalism was so rife, with half of the perimeter fencing at the local cemetery ripped off, and stolen by vandals. He said security was to be beefed up at both Bela-Bela Stadium and the graveyard.

Waterberg SAB Regional League followers were treated to an avalanche of goals last weekend, with a total of 16 strikes finding the inside of the net from a total of four fixtures, played on Saturday, 20 January. The match between rising stars, Seabe Opleft United FC and Mookgophong Junior Stars FC produced six goals, with the two teams playing to a 3-all stalemate at the local stadium. Seabe Opleft United FC was scheduled to square off with the second-placed Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC, at the latter’s local Sunfa Stadium, in what promises to be a humdinger. Modimolle Home Defenders FC, who also shared the spoils with Rapotokwane Qualitho FC after a 3-all draw at home, was fixtured to visit Celtic FC. Rapotokwane Qaulitho FC has a date with Bussel FC, which is placed at number four on the league log standings. Bussel FC suffered a narrow 2-1 loss at the hands of log leaders, Modimolle Troublemakers FC. Modimolle Troublemakers FC was this week scheduled to welcome Bela Bela Pirates FC, in a steady but sure campaign to extend and consolidate the team’s lead on the league log standings. Bela Bela Pirates FC was this week still licking its wounds, after losing their weekend match 2-1 at home to thirdplaced Modimolle Boys 2 Men FC.

Limpopo rugby veteran Mojalefa Makanye. Photo supplied Mzamane Ringane The promotional Modimolle Local Football Association (LFA) league has proven to be more competitive, following last weekend’s lively fixtures at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium. Of the couple of matches for the day, Liverpool FC defeated La Masia FC 2-1 in a mouth-watering league encounter. Modimolle LFA Deputy Chairperson, Hlupi Lehong, praised all the teams for competing at the highest possible levels of football, showing grit and determination. “All the teams are playing with youngsters of the correct age. The performance was also high and it showed development of football in Modimolle was on the right

path”, he said. La Masia FC assistant coach, Lehlogonolo Dipela, said his team played well, and it was unfortunate that they failed to take home maximum points. “During the first half we managed to create so many chances and we had our opponents under pressure. During the second half it was difficult for us to keep up. We have just resumed training, and everything is good so far. We are hoping to bounce back soon,” Dipela said. Liverpool FC have a weekly system where they select the team’s man of the match, and it was none other than Glen Mathebula. Mathebula was happy that he finally scored his first goal of the season. In other weekend results, Egypt FC walloped Future Stars FC 3-1.

Mzamane Ringane If things go according to plan, Limpopo might have an association to represent the rugby needs across the province. Behind the scenes efforts are underway to launch the proposed Limpopo Rugby Union, with another meeting scheduled to take place on Saturday, 27 January. Limpopo has been under the Blue Bulls Rugby Union for more than 20 years. The situation dates back to the Apartheid era boundaries, when the sport fell under the Transvaal Rugby Union. province, but they do not get enough opportunities,” he said. The veteran, who has been actively involved in local rugby since 1993, said like soccer and handball, rugby deserved to have an association which would address issues such as development at grassroots level. “We believe that having our own rugby union will help improve things in our province. Limpopo has not been producing individuals who play at national level for many years now. This would hopefully be a turning point,” Makanye said. He planned to engage the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in this regard, and other stakeholders such as potential sponsors.
