Waterberg water shortage alert

Moswoeu misses court

Photo: Justin Steyn Justin Steyn Bela-Bela Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coordinator, Sello Moswoeu, was not present at his expected latest court appearance on Friday, 26 January. However, a medical doctor’s note was delivered to the courts informing the presiding magistrate that Moswoeu had gone for a medical check-up. On Monday, 29 Janaury, Moswoeu told

Modimolle-Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Residensts across the broader Waterberg might as well be asked to watch their water consumption after ModimolleMookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden raised the red flag. She said in a statement water levels were at such a critical stage that given the average consumption, Modimolle had a little less than a month’s water supplies left. The main feeder Donkerpoort Dam, was at a low 23% capacity. Van Staden said the less than average rainfall, coupled with high temperatures, resulted in increased demand for water, and called on residents to use available

water supplies responsibly. In Mookgophong, she warned, the Welgevonden Dam was also at critical low levels of 40%, leaving the area with just over two months of water supplies. “Our current usage of 2, 5 mega litres a day is putting this resource under extreme pressure,” she said. The mayor urged residents to ensure that taps were turned off when not in use, report leaks for repairs as soon as possible, do not water gardens and wash cars using potable water. “It is likely that unless we have good sustained rains soon, we will need to implement water restrictions and I can assure you that this will be done in a responsible and measured manner,” said the mayor.

Petersens case for February Justin Steyn The Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court expected the final post mortem and forensic reports to be presented by Friday, 3 February, flowing from the alleged murder of the Petersens in September last year. Murder suspects, Mpho Nico Nkonyana, Tshepo Tebula and Piet Mathebula, appeared briefly in court last Friday, 26 January. The three suspects remained in custody after bail had been denied. Nkonyana, Tebula and Mathebula face charges of of allegedly murdering Cecil Peterson (83) and his wife Pattie (73), on their farm on the outskirts of Bela-Bela.

Pattie was shot in the stomach and died on the scene, while Cecil died from gunshot wounds at a private hospital in Pretoria. The investigating officer, Captain Renier Schutte, told the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court the three men had no previous convictions, but pending charges ranging from car hijacking, burglary to drug-dealing. The infamous alleged farm attack triggered shockwaves throughout the region, with both black and white locals taking part on Black Monday, 30 October. The three suspects were tracked down to a house at the Kanana section of Hammanskraal. A fourth suspect was still at large.

The BEAT he had been in and out of hospital. He said, however, he was feeling fine. He faces charges of trespassing that were pressed against him on Tuesday, 28 November 2017. The charges were related to alleged land invasions in Spa Park and Koppewaai. Moswoeu was once again expected to appear before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 9 February.

Mabuza’s anti-corruption endorsement fears Mzamane Ringane ANC Deputy President David Mabuza has brought bad news for corrupt officials and politicians when he offered his unqualified endorsement, to leader Cyril Ramaphosa’s relentless pursuit of those with their hands in the till. The incoming Ramaphosa leadership, through the Hawks and National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), has been probing big guns, such as no less than raiding the offices of Free State Premier, Ace Magashule. Speaking at a well-attended ANC 106th birthday rally at Modimolle’s Ephraim Mogale Stadium, Mabuza said the new leadership would prioritize investigations into corruption and state capture at all levels of government. The Mpumalanga Premier, Mabuza, buried all speculation that he was siding with Zuma, when he told the applauding audience Ramaphosa was his leader of choice. “Ramaphosa shall be supported by all of us (in the ANC) and (I can assure you) he is very safe with me next to him,” he said. He said the ANC leadership was in overwhelming agreement to fight corruption, and move swiftly to provide land for potential farmers, so as to create jobs. Mabuza nudged ANC structures at provincial, regional and local level to campaign for the unity of the ANC. “If you succeed in uniting the ANC leadership, it would be so much easier to unite the broader community of South Africa,” he said. In a veiled reference to Zuma’s fading star, Mabuza said leaders in the ANC “come and go”, but that the ANC shall remain the leader of society.

Gospel extravaganza

Women pray for priest

Mzamane Ringane The Modimolle branch of the Divine Grace Ministry Church was scheduled to host an all-embracing gospel concert, whereby both locals and artists arriving from the surrounding areas were to take part on Saturday 3 March. The gospel show was to be held at the Phagameng-based church at Modimolle’s sprawling township. The respected Bishop Kenny Tshisevhe is the leader of the Divine Grace Ministry Church. Modimolle-based artists, Harry K, John Mabusha and Tiisetso Motjetje, top the bill for the concert, which has lined up several other known and lesser-known performers from around the Waterberg. Khomotso Koka of Mookgophong and the CODA in Worship Gospel Choir from Vosloosrus in Gauteng, were also expected to mesmerize local gospel lovers. Pastor Harry Kekana, better known within the broader gospel circuit as Harry K, told The BEAT the purpose of the concert was to revive and heal the souls of people through gospel music.

Ngobeni hosts annual matric awards

Women from across denominations at Modimolle converged on the One Body Church on Thursday 25 January to ask for divine intervention against the backdrop of the continued search for missing clergyman, the Reverend Jonas Oubaas Mokau. Mokau has been missing since 26 December last year, and the community has been searching for him with the help of the police without any success. Last Thursday local women gathered on the local One Body Church, where Mokau serves as the presideing reverend. Reverend Pheladi Makau (no relation) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church at Modimolle,

said it was hoped that something would come up following the interdenominational prayers. “The purpose of this prayer meeting was to pray together with the Mokau family and other women from various local congregations. We are hoping and praying that he is found alive. Since December, the family and members of the One Body Church have been praying for the safe return of our elder,” she said. Mokau’s daughter, Johanna, told The BEAT her family was calling on all local residents to help in any way possible to find her father. “We are also hoping that through prayer we will find direction as to what happened to my father,” she said.

Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela High School has been applauded all-round after matric results improved from 32% in 2015, 72% in 2016 and 84,2% last year. New headmaster Lucas Nukeri was identified as the main driver of this phenomenal success. National Assembly lawmaker, Pinky Kekana, local Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni, Limpopo Health MEC Phophi Ramathuba, and councillors from the DA, EFF and BRA, paid a courtesy visit to the school. The visit was part of Premier Stanley Mathabatha’s “Back to School” campaign, whereby politicians were urged to touch base with especially schools which performed exceptionally well,

those which underperformed and the ones which regressed, in terms of matric results. Provincial spokesperson Phuti Seloba said the purpose of the campaign was to monitor the re-opening of schools in late January. The province has achieved a slight 2017 matric results improvement from 62.5% in 2016 to 65.6% in 2017, while the Waterberg has improved from 64.2% in 2016 to 69.5% in 2017. During the visit at Bela-Bela High School, the leaders deliberated with Nukeri and his staff on the learners’ and teachers’ performance and behaviour, drug abuse and teenage pregnancy, among others. Bella-Bela High School emerged number one in terms of the most improved results.

The tournament touches the lives of millions of youngsters. Photo: TK Mashaba TK Mashaba Registration for the popular Danone Nations Cup kicked off to a slow start, ahead of the closing date on 28 February. South African Schools Football Association manager, Themba Tshabalala, said on Monday, 29 January, there were no major worries about the snail’s pace of registration. “However, we expect registration to pick up steam in a few weeks,” he said. The Danone Nations Cup offers a rare opportunity for youngsters to showcase their skills at the highest possible level, culminating in a world cup. The tournament is open to soccer players between the ages

of 10 and 12. As was the case in previous years, Benny’s Sports Development and Academy from Limpopo, which was the 2016 national champions, was expected to register for the 2018 leg of the Danone Nations Cup. The competition was reputed with the pontial to touch the lives of upwards of 2,3-million kids worldwide every year. The preliminary stages the Danone Nations Cup start at cluster level, through district, provincial and then national finals. The winning team at national level qualifies for the international Danone Nations Cup, which was hosted by France last year.

Mzamane Ringane Following a weekend of no action after its home fixture was postponed, Waterberg SAB League log leaders, Modimolle Troublemakers FC, was expected to resume with the title race this coming weekend. The Modimolle team was last weekend expected to host Bela Bela Pirates FC at Modimolle’s Ephraim Mogale Stadium, but the match had to be postponed due to a political rally. ANC Deputy President David Mabuza spoke at the rally to mark 106 years of the founding of the ANC. The postponed fixture, according to SA Football Association sources, would now be rescheduled for a yet to be decided date. On Saturday, 3 February,

Modimolle Troublemakers FC was fixtured to host Rapotokwane Qualitho FC at the local Ephraim Mogale Stadium. The fixture between the two teams promises to be a tough one, as the sixth-placed Rapotokwane Qualitho FC was still oozing with confidence, following the reigning champions’ 4-0 lashing of Modimolle Bussel FC last weekend. Modimolle Bussel FC was this coming weekend fixtured to square off with homeboys Modimolle Celtic FC, who played to a 2-all draw with Modimolle Home Defenders FC last weekend. The match was scheduled to be played at Phagameng’s Tankeng Grounds. In other fixtures at the local Ephraim Mogale Stadium on Saturday, Mookgophong Junior Stars FC would be guests to the local Modimolle Home Defenders FC. Seabe Opleft United FC, who suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of second-placed BelaBela Diesel N Dust FC, was this forthcoming weekend scheduled to visit Modimolle Boys 2 Men FC at Vaalwater.

Breakthrough! TK Mashaba Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC striker, Itumeleng Mankwane, has advanced from recent trials to join the Jomo Cosmos FC development team. The National First Division campaigners, Jomo Cosmos FC, remained arguably one of the best talent scouts across the African continent. Hopefuls from across the continent were known to be descending on the Johannesdburg-based team to be considered at the triasls, with many proceeding to play overseas, such as the sensational Philemon Masinga. The talented Mankwane was also invited for trials at Soweto giants, Orlando Pirates FC, in recent weeks. The youngster from Bela-Bela would have a taste of the Jomo Cosmos FC flair when he takes part in the development team’s playoffs engagement against AmaTuks FC and Highlanders FC in Johannesburg on Saturday, 3 February. Mankwane has joined a steadilygrowing list of local players who have been invited for trials at the highest levels of football. Last year in August Bela-Bela Diesel ‘n Dust FC players, Sam Modise and Papi Mothapo, were invited for trials at Mpumalanga’s Mbombela United which, like Jomo Cosmos FC, campaigned in the NFD. Last year Kina Nkhumise and Gontse Molokomme were selected as part of the Under-17 Amajimbos team which played at a regional tournament in Lesotho.

Wing attack players, Mapula Hakala and Nkateko Rikhotso join the Baobabs for the first time this year. They were set to team up with local Baobab veterans, the goal-shooter Grace Leshaba, Kamogelo Motsamai and Dakalo Chikala, all of them also from Diesel ‘n Dust Netball Club. The five players from Bela-Bela were expected to join their team-mates in Polokwane shortly, for preparations ahead of the interprovincial Brutal Fruit Professional League, on a date and venue yet to be decided. The Baobabs have been improving from the tournament since the year 2016. That year the Limpopo girls came out 10th from the rournament, but improved to position eight in 2017. Diesel n Dust Netball Club head coach, Koketso Kgabo, expressed his joy at the selction of more players from the team.
