Murder in broad daylight
shocks Bela-Bela Lizzy Bapela A young man from Bela-Bela received a severe shock on Monday, 27 March, when he became a witness to a murder in broad daylight. The incident took place at Masemola Street in the township. The young man, whose identity cannot be revealed, was still shocked and shivering when he spoke to The BEAT after the incident. Jospeh (* not his real name), told The BEAT that he had been walking with his friends, coming back from the industrial area, when they saw two young men chasing after the victim and assaulting him. He said the two men chased the victim until they brought him down, where they stabbed him and beat him with rocks. The suspects said they attacked the victim in retaliation for his alleged attempted rape of their sister on Sunday, 26 March. “My friends and I were very concerned by the incident,” said Joseph. “We pleaded with them to stop, but they continued regardless. They expressed pride in their act, and said they were not afraid to go to jail for what they were doing. They were stabbing him like an animal while he was just lying there and not screaming.” According to Joseph, bystanders were screaming and begging the men to stop, but to no avail. Eyewitnesses called both the police and an ambulance service, and the suspects were found at the scene, next to the deceased. Members of the Bela-Bela EMS certified the victim dead at the scene, and the suspects were arrested immediately. A number of the facts of the case had not yet become clear by the time of going to print, as

Community members witnessed the incident, which took place on a public street in the middle of the day. Photo: Lizzy Bapela eyewitnesses and community members told conflicting stories. A number of people mentioned the alleged rape attempt, while others said the victim was known for his thieving ways but was not a rapist. Other community members were of the opinion that the victim was mentally ill, and had not harmed anyone. Limpopo Police spokesperson Lieutenant-
Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the suspects appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 28 March, and said the investigation into the case continues. The suspects were identified as Abel Makhafola (22) and Frans Chokwe (20) and remain in custody. A source who attended the court proceedings said the identity of the victim was not revealed in court.
Constable Maria Maswanganye, spokesperson for the Bela-Bela Police, told The BEAT that the police were against members of the public taking the law into their own hands. She urged the community to report crimes to their local police station instead. The Bela-Bela Police can be reached on 017 736 9761/62, 079 889 5614, and 112.

The SAPS in Modimolle led by the newly appointed Station Commander Colonel Louisa Harmse and Sector 1 Commander Captain Molokela Motadi reassured members of the community that they will continue to work around the clock to combat crime in the area. Members of the SAPS, Community Policing Forum and members of the community at large gathered at Modimolle’s Extension 7 to launch a newly elected street committee and to also address the issue of crime in that area. Motadi urged the community to support the street committee members. He said the relationship between the community and the police will ensure victory in their battle against crime. Harmse told members of the community that the police will meet with residents on a
regular basis, to strengthen the relationship between the two parties. “Every Thursday the police will be engaging with the community in various sections of Modimolle,” said Harmse. When residents were given an opportunity to ask questions or seek clarity, the major concern was that suspects were mostly released back to the community soon after their arrest. The Station Commander responded that the duty of the police is to investigate thoroughly, arrest then detain suspects until they appear before the court of law. “The court will then decide if the suspect is eligible to be granted bail. The court can decide to release the suspect on bail while investigations are continuing,” she explained. She also pleaded with the community to work with the police, by refusing to buy stolen goods and reporting suspicious activities.
Police officer allegedly assaulted in station Justin Steyn A shocking video has gone viral, in which a police officer appears to be beaten inside the Roedtan police station by a man who allegedly wanted to report a robbery. The video was captured on what is believed to be a cellular device. The Limpopo provincial spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo has since confirmed that the incident took place on Saturday, 11 March. In the video footage a man, identified as Willem Schoeman (26) can be seen apparently assaulting another man, Warrant Officer Godfrey Matlala (50). A third man, whose identity is unknown, is seen trying to intervene in the altercation.
During the tussle, Schoeman alleged that Matlala tried to kill him after Matlala removed an assault rifle from one of the police station’s safes. “I will kill him. He wants to kill me. Why does he take the gun out of the safe?” Schoeman was heard saying on the video. The man who tried to intervene in the situation managed to remove the firearm from the scene and pleaded with Schoeman not to kill Matlala. Police managed to detain and arrest Schoeman during the scuffle. He appeared in the Mookgophong Magistrate Court on Monday, 13 March and was granted bail of R5 000. Schoeman is expected to reappear at the Mookgophong Magistrates Court on Monday, 3 May.

Taxi men still at loggerheads
Justin Steyn Pastor Lethebo Rabalago, famously known as the “Doom Prophet”, has been banned from spraying Doom insect repellent on his congregation. The decision was made in the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane on Monday 20 March. The department’s MEC, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, welcomed the decision. “We believe this will be a lesson to many other pastors who use these unusual practices against the poor and vulnerable members of our society,” Ramathuba said in statement. “We will also run various health education programmes with a view of helping our people to understand effects of some of these practices.” Ramathuba said Rabalago’s activities came under the spotlight after pictures of him spraying Doom on his congregants went viral on social media platforms. The 24-year old Rabalago made news headlines when he sprayed the harmful substance on attendees of a midnight prayer session in Mookgophong last year. The Limpopo department applied for an interdict which prohibited Rabalago from spraying the substance on anyone he comes in contact with. Rabalago’s actions have resulted in various memes on social media where the use of Doom insecticide is concerned. Tiger brands, which is responsible for manufacturing the insecticide, has condemned Rabalago’s actions. “We find this practice alarming and extremely concerning, and want to make very clear that it is unsafe to spray any Doom or any aerosol onto people’s faces. Doom has been formulated to kill specific

A decision by the Limpopo High Court has forbidden Pastor Lethebo Rabalago, also known as the “Doom Prophet” from spraying insecticide on his followers. Photo supplied insects which are detailed on the cans, and the packaging has very clear warnings which must be adhered to,” said the brand’s spokeswoman Nevashnee Naicker. Naicker said that using this product for purposes other than what it is intended for, poses risks and is therefore dangerous. Rabalago declined to comment on the court’s decision.
Taxi industry role players from Ngobi, Cyverskuil and Voyentin are calling for peace in the ongoing taxi uproar with members of the Warmbaths Taxi Association. This follows an alleged fight between Ngobi/Cyverskuil Taxi Association (NTA) and the Warmbaths Taxi Association (WATA) that erupted over a week ago. NTA Chairperson George Kale told The BEAT in an interview on Monday, 27 March that NTA and WATA are fighting for the route from Ngobi, Cyverskuil and Voyentin to BelaBela and back. He added that members of WATA, led by their Chairperson Peter Mogale, chased their members out of the Bela-Bela Town Taxi Rank back to the one at Eja Monate Complex. Kale further said WATA members blocked the Eja Monate rank to stop NTA taxis from entering or leaving. He added that at the time, some of their taxis were already full of passengers at the rank, who were not allowed to leave the vehicles in fear of their lives. He also said among them were patients with chronic diseases who needed to rush home to take their medication. “WATA members blocked the road at the Waterfront/Bela-Mall area to prevent our
members from entering Bela-Bela. They even beat one of our members in the process, Meshach Obuwe. That is why we came to the local police station to open a case of assault against them,” said the concerned chairperson. Obuwe told The BEAT that he lost over R500 when he was being beaten up. He added that he, along with Kale and others who accompanied him, waited at the station for more than three hours to get assistance and no one attended to them. This called for Kale’s concern, who urged that the police should not abandon poor clients but attend to them as soon as possible as they have urgent complaints. Kale further highlighted that he and Mogale were not in good terms and were unable to sit as association heads and discuss anything positive. He also called for peace between WATA and NTA, saying the fights always affect the poor innocent passengers who need to use their taxis to run their day-to-day errands. WATA representatives could not be reached for comment as they were in a caucus at the time of going to press. The Bela-Bela police’s detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla was also unavailable to give a side of the police’s in the matter.

Lizzy Bapela Bela-Bela’s Bosele-Dawn Drop-In Centre suffered another burglary recently, making it the third in a matter of months. None of the cases have yielded results so far. The staff reported for duty as usual on Monday, 27 March, only to find the place broken into and invaded, with several items missing. The BEAT visited the centre and talked to

the manager, Latela Langa, who looked helpless as if she had a heavy load on her shoulders. She told the paper she has lost confidence in the justice system and is reluctant to believe the recent case will be solved. Langa said the most painful thing in this whole confusion is that the orphans and vulnerable children receiving care from the centre are the ones who suffer the most. She added that in the first burglary, the suspects forced their way in through the door and stole computers and a new

generator. She also said the suspects stole all the groceries during the second burglary in addition to a brand-new lawnmower, an extension cord roll, stationery and groceries. “We have opened cases following all the incidents and nothing happened so far, no leads, no arrests and no suspects. In both previous instances, the police kept telling us that they will notify us if they find anything but so far, nothing has been reported. We have lost hope and wonder if
investigations in this case will materialize,” said Langa. Bela-Bela police’s detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla said both the previous cases were closed since there was no evidence to resolve the case and no leads on the suspects. He added that the police only informed the person who opened the case, and that person is responsible for notifying the rest of the involved parties to avoid any misunderstandings.
Colonel Mogale solves a 43-year old missing persons case Lizzy Bapela Modimolle police detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Simon Mogale received congratulatory words from his colleagues and the community after he solved a missing persons case which had dragged for many years. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay reported that Ouma Julia Dhlodhlo went missing from Modimolle in 1974 and was never seen again. “On that specific day, Dhlodhlo caught a bus with school children to White River to attend a school event, but never returned. She left behind four children with their grandparents at Modimolle — she was a single parent. The youngest of the children was a three-month old girl, who is now 43 years old. In August 2014, the youngest, Louzy, came to Modimolle SAPS to report her mother missing and pleaded with Mogale to take up the investigation as she trusted in his skills and experience,” said Findlay. The officer said that Dhlodhlo was a member of a Methodist Church when she went missing, a church which also had a branch in Bela-Bela. He added that this was a very difficult investigation to conduct as the family did not have the missing mother’s most recent photos. Mogale could not find any records of Dhlodhlo since the Bela-Bela Methodist Church burned down some years ago, and all personal records were destroyed in the fire. As the investigation continued, Mogale stumbled upon a man who was married to Dhlodhlo, residing in Clauclau Trust, White River, and positive links were made. Investigations also revealed that the couple had four children together, three girls and a boy, although two of them have passed away. Dhlodho’s children from Modimolle are all still alive. The husband then sent Dhlodlho’s recent photo, which confirmed it was her. The family was crushed to find out that she had
passed away on 11 March 2013. Mogale and Louzy went to White River on 3 March, where she met her half-sister, Nozipho Mndwane, 35. “It was a very emotional meeting, having a sister for so many years whom I knew nothing about. I am glad that my trust in Mogale did not go in vain as his investigation was fruitful. I am also thankful to him and his team for the job perfectly done, I wish for him to continue helping others as well,” said the delighted daughter. In his words, Mogale said he was over the moon as this was the oldest case he has ever solved in his career. He added that the success even surprised him as he was still in primary school when Dhlodhlo went missing, and had not even considered a career in the police at that time. “The case was very difficult to solve and my team and I even considered throwing in the towel. Louzy kept begging us not to close it as she did not want to die not knowing her mother or her whereabouts. Her half-siblings and their family were over the moon when they saw her, saying she looked just like her mother the first time they met her. We suggested a DNA test but dropped the issue when the children from both sides described their mother’s physical appearance and family identities because that proved we found the right family. The most fascinating thing is that Dhlodhlo left four year gaps between her children in both families,” said the colonel. Mndwane is currently visiting her sister Louzy in Modimolle. No information as to why Dhlodhlo might have left her first family has been provided. Daughters of the late Ouma Julia Dhlodhlo, Louzy Dhlodhlo, 43, and Nozipho Mndwane, 35 were over the moon to meet following a successful case by Modimolle police detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Malesela Simon Mogale. Alleged attempted rape victim to testify Justin Steyn
Bela-Bela resident Palesa Qoboza, is expected to testify against her alleged sexual attacker. Photo: Justin Steyn
Palesa Qoboza said she will testify against the man who allegedly attempted to rape her. Qoboza said the alleged incident occurred at her house while she was asleep on the morning of Tuesday, 21 February. According to her she was alone at her home in Leseding and was awoken by a man who attempted to rape her as she was lying on her couch. “It was a rainy day and I fell asleep on our couch at home. I was woken up by someone’s hands touching me. I woke up in a fright and found that a man who lives in the area had started to undress me and was kissing my neck,” she told The BEAT.
She said she had only recognized the man as someone who lived in the area. Qoboza said she managed to avoid being raped by pretending to comply with his alleged request to have sex with her. “He was lying on top of me and wanted to have sex and said he had condoms. He even threatened me if I didn’t give him what he wanted. I knew that our front door was open as I left it unlocked and asked him to get off me so I could get comfortable, but rushed out the front door screaming for help,” she said. Qoboza said she was assisted by two ladies who walked by her house. He was taken into police custody shortly thereafter and now faces charges of sexual assault. The suspect, whose name will be revealed
once he has entered a plea, appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrates court on Thursday 23 February and was released on bail of R500. He reappeared before the court once again on Friday, 17 March, but the case was postponed to Monday, 10 April to allow further investigations to continue. Qoboza is also expected to testify on the set date, where she said she is nervous and would like to have her case ended as soon as possible. “I just want this case to be over with so I can move on with my life. I cannot live like this anymore,” she said. She added that she plans to move back to Johannesburg as soon as her case has been finalised in court.
Thabazimbi Municipality responds to media enquiry Lizzy Bapela Thabazimbi Local Municipality responded to the article published in The BEAT on Friday, 24 March, about the Special Investigation Unit (SIU), which is scheduled to investigate the municipality’s state of affairs. It was announced in the media recently that President Jacob Zuma authorised the investigation, under Section 2 (1) of the Special Investigation Unit and Special Tribunals unit, 1996. According to reports, the SIU was authorised to investigate the alleged unlawful appropriation or expenditure of public money or property, serious maladministration, and improper or unlawful conduct by councillors, officials or employees of the municipality. The SIU investigation news saw opposition party DA and members of the community making their views public, stating their concerns regarding the state of the municipality and its affairs. The DA have expressed concerns about the running of things in the municipality in
Big Bang shakes Bela-Bela Justin Steyn & Andries van der Heyde Bela-Bela residents were concerned about an unexpected explosion which shook the town on the night of Wednesday, 22 March. “At about just after seven that night I heard a big noise and saw flames rising to the sky. I was so scared and thought that we were being bombed or that a fuelling station had exploded,” said a witness. Despite the alarming bang, there was no cause for concern as various Whatsapp Emergency groups confirmed that the explosion was conducted at the dam area of Forever Resort Warmbaths as a means of pest control in the area and that no injuries were reported. The circulating message stated that pest control will be done at Forever Resorts on that night at about 19:30. It further stated that the control will be in the form of an explosion with flames to follow. The explosion was meant to eradicate an overwhelming amount of finches and was conducted in conjunction with the department of agriculture. A person who was involved with the operation stated that this step was necessary, since the finches caused problems for farmers in the Springbok flats. He preferred to remain anonymous. “The recent drought placed great stress on farmers in the area and this step was taken to prevent further financial loss. By the use of fuel the nests were culled, since spraying poison from an aeroplane would have contimated nearby water sources. Forever Resorts did not organise the culling.”

the past, including among others, when the municipality’s assets were confiscated due to non-payments of debts in 2016. This time the DA Limpopo leader and spokesperson for COGHSTA Jacques Smalle said they believe the investigation will assist in exposing the ANC’s alleged maladministration and corrupt dealings by cronies and incompetent redeployed cadres, whose only focus was self-enrichment, through conducting lifestyle audits. Municipal spokesperson Joshua Motsomane told The BEAT that their emails have been down for the past two weeks, which is why he had not been able answer to any media queries. This has been the case previously when he could not be reached for comment on matters involving the municipality. However, Motsomane said the municipality, council and staff welcome the authorisation of SIU investigation made by the president to their municipality. He added that they will cooperate fully in this investigation and that they will be transparent in working with the SIU team in order for them to do their work.

This tractor almost snapped in half after a Pajero crashed into it.
Eyewitnesses at Vaalwater were astounded to see a tractor almost snapping in half after an accident on the R53 road. The accident happened on Thursday, 23 March, as the tractor turned off towards Obaro. According to an eye-witness, Frans Truter, who was driving behind the tractor, it was not the tractor drivers’ fault. He said that the tractor driver had indicated that he was about to turn right, but a Pajero overtook Truter and crashed head-on into the side of the tractor. “He hit the tractor so hard that it ended up on the sidewalk and
almost snapped it in half,” said Truter. Sergeant Simon Makhuvele, Vaalwater police’s spokesperson, confirmed the accident. “The driver of the tractor was arrested as he did not have a valid driver’s licence. A case of reckless and negligent driving has been opened against him,” he said. The driver cannot not be identified as he hasn’t appeared in court yet. The driver of the Pajero refused to speak to The Post. It is however believed that the driver and passengers are employees at a lodge in the area. Fortunately no one was hurt during the accident, though both vehicles suffered extensive damage.

Mamelodi Sundowns to give back to the community
Bela-Bela Forever Resorts and Local PepStores formed a partnership that focuses on ploughing back to the local community. This is part of their back to school campaign, a project that started three years ago. Both the business entities’ partnership visit local schools on a regular basis so that they can lend a helping hand. The team then identifies the needy learners through their teachers and principals and intervene as needed. On Monday, 27 March, the team visited Mmamakwa Full-Service School to donate proper school shoes and socks to identified learners in each grade from reception until Grade 7. A total of 89 learners benefitted from the project at Mmamakwa, with other schools seeing over 120 learners benefiting previously. Forever Resorts’ Deputy General Manager Sam Rammutla said the project is focusing on learners from disadvantaged households. He added that it is heart-breaking to see a hopeful small child walking to school without proper school uniform or, in some cases, shoes. The Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters Club have identified ten families in Bela-Bela to whom they will be donating food parcels. This will be on a date that will still have to be finalised. Talking to the national coordinator of the club, Cedrick Moela, this was part of their
social responsibility as the team. “We have worked with social workers in Bela-Bela and the Bela-Bela United Man‘s Fellowship to help us with the name of families who are most disadvantaged,” said Moela. Mamelodi Sundowns supports club donated some food parcel last year at the Bosele Drop in centre and they said they will help where necessary, said Moela. Moela said he will be with national secretary Lesego Maseba during their donation session.
Planned escalators are finally under construction at the Bosveld Centre in BelaBela. In April last year The BEAT reported that upgrades to the centre were completed in July of 2015 and it now boasts a second storey, which is planned to be home to at least thirteen shops. At the time the centre’s leasing agent, Anton Killian, said the shops at the upper level have remained vacant awaiting the arrival of an escalator to the area. “We have ordered an escalator for the centre and the shops will only be occupied once they have been installed and declared
operational,” he said in a telephone conversation. More recently, Killian said escalators have been under construction since the start of March and these planned to be completed by the end of April. Killian added that the centre’s management is currently engaging with shops that have planned to open at the centre’s upper level to ensure that vacant spaces are filled. “There may be shops that wanted to open at the centre’s upper level, but have pulled out since due to the prolonged day in constructing the escalators,” Killian said. He added that the public will have immediate access to the upper level as soon as the escalators have been completed.

Workshop boosts Waterberg referees’ officiating skills Mzamane Ringane Referees from all parts of the Waterberg converged on BelaBela’s Pendleberry Grove Holidays venue for a workshop which took place on Saturday, 25 and Sunday, 26 March. Waterberg region referees’ coordinator Edward Letswalo facilitated the workshop which served to revive the skills of referees and to also ensure consistency in their day to day officiating of matches. Letswalo who bags a 30 year experience in refereeing, told The BEAT that he started off as an assistant referee then later promoted to being a referee due to passion and determination. Today the veteran referee who hails from Lephalale is bestowed an opportunity to transfer his skills in the region and Limpopo at large. “We want to improve the standard of refereeing in the region. We also want to ensure that there is consistency in decision making by both the referees and their assistants during matches,” he told The BEAT. He said they have also recruited many young referees who will be developed at an early age, so they can take over the baton when the older referees retire. “I am also delighted because we have two referees from the Waterberg who did extremely well at the national level of fitness tests. It will be great to have referees who will be representing our region at that highest level,” Letswalo said. Newly recruited female referee Margaret Moloantoa (20) from the Lephalale Football
Referees from across the Waterberg attended the workshop in Bela-Bela. Photo: Mzamane Ringane Association (LFA) said she learnt a lot during the workshop, and is willing to implement that during soccer matches. “I have learnt to remain disciplined and focused for the entire duration of the match. I love refereeing with all my heart, and I wish to see myself abroad one day doing
what I love the most,” she said. Jay Jay Petrus Moore (32) who was also attending the workshop for the first time, told The BEAT that it was a great experience to be part of this workshop. “I am very appreciative to have been part of this informative workshop. I have a
learnt a lot of things here and still willing to learn more throughout the journey,” Moore told The BEAT. SAB League coordinator Degracious Mfolo said they hope that the workshop will not only benefit the referees, but would also impact positively on the league. “We hope that the referees will implement what they have learnt from the workshop during their matches, and that would ensure a smooth sailing of the league,” she said.
