The recent arrest of two alleged armed robbers in downtown BelaBela is pointing towards a disturbing increase in the use of firearms in parts of the Waterberg. Just a week earlier Bela-Bela suburbia was forced to scurry for cover, against the backdrop of a gunfight between a local resident and alleged armed robbers, reportedly arriving from faraway Port Elizabeth. In the recent downtown drama, the main Chris Hani thoroughfare was brought to a halt when members of the local police cornered four armed suspects

traveling in a VW Golf 7, known in township lingua franca as the “Vrrr … phaaa!” Investigator Sergeant Frans Sekgobela said the foursome had allegedly sped off from Thabazimbi, after holding up a mobile phone outlet. He said the white getaway car had been reported hijacked in Pretoria. Two of the four suspects were arrested in connection with the illegal possession of firearms, after being traced to the popular Eja Monate complex on the outskirts of the town. Police are on a manhunt for two of their alleged accomplices, also feared to be armed. Meanwhile, two suspects, Hilton Marks and Mawanda Ngangaza, were expected to make a second appearance

in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court midweek, following the gunfight in Ludorf Street. In another firearm-related incident, a suspect believed to have been armed, was shot by pursuing police, and later died at the local hospital on 17 July. In Phagameng outside Modimolle,

two suspects were arrested in connection with stolen rifles on 9 July, which police believe could have been used in criminal activity. A clothing chain outlet was robbed also robbed on 14 July in Modimolle, by suspects armed with pistols.

Police canteen up in flames Ronél van Jaarsveld Part of a police canteen in Modimolle was damaged by fire allegedly sparked by a burning cigarette. Three boys and a girl, aged between 11 and 13, were being questioned over the incident, and cannot be named in terms of the Child Protection Act. The incident took place at midday on Saturday 29 July, after police received mobile calls from members of the public alerting them of smoke billowing from the canteen. Sergeant Ciska Fourie attended to the scene, and requested assistance from the fire department. The four kids were spotted and identified by an eyewitness who alerted the police. The foursome appeared before the courts midweek. Modimolle SAPS spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findley said under such circumstances, the kids would be referred to social workers to be taken through a diversion programme. The kids have been placed under the custody of their parents. Anyone with information which could assist in the investigations is advised to call Fourie on 082 927 7756.

Cash loans outlet robbed Lizzy Bapela The police in Modimolle are investigating an armed robbery at a cash loans outlet along Nelson Mandela Drive on the morning of Saturday, 29 July. Modimolle police spokesperson, Warrant Officer James Findlay, said six armed men invaded Mr Yeng’s shop, manhandled and robbed him. According to information received, the suspects entered the shop, with one of them ordering Yeng to open the cash safe.

The suspects then helped themselves to various valuables and R50 000 in cash, and then fled the scene in a getaway car. The police said Yeng escaped unscathed from the ordeal. The getaway car was a white Corrola, but the registration numbers are unknown. “The same suspects were at the shop the day before, to borrow R20 000 and Mr Yeng told them he only lends up to R2 000, the complainant was able to identify them. The police are looking for the suspects and investigations continue,” Findlay said.

Minibus overturns at Polokwane Justin Steyn Nine people were killed and five others sustained injuries after two tyres burst and overturned, at the Middlefontein offramp. A source at the Modimolle police station confirmed the accident, which took place on Monday, 31 July, during peak hour traffic. The taxi was from Polokwane, headed for Pretoria, when the two tyres burst, one after the other, with the driver losing

control of the vehicle. The skidding taxi smashed into an oncoming vehicle, causing havoc on the N1 southbound. Some of those seriously wounded were airlifted to a hospital in Ekurhuleni, while others were rushed to the H F Odendaal Hospital in Modimolle. By late afternoon the following day, Tuesday, 1 August, investigators were still on the scene trying to determine the cause of the crash. The police source said a case of culpable homicide was being investigated.

Mmusi Maimane goes door-to-door SA Youth Council on advocacy mission Lizzy Bapela High stakes have nudged the DA to dispatch party strongman Mmusi Maimane to go door-to-door in Vaalwater, ahead of by-elections scheduled for Wednesday 2 Auguast. The youthful liberal wasted no time in reminding ward one and three (Leseding Secttion) residents they had serious challenges under an ANC-led ModimolleMookgophong Local Municipality, before the DA-led coalition took over. He urged potential voters to use their vote “to keep making progress” by sending the ANC packing through the byelections. Maimane later addressed a packed Leseding Community Hall, flanked by DA Limpopo leader, Jacques Smalle. Modimolle Mookgophong Mayor Marlene van Staden, Chief Whip, Dingaan Motswene, and ward one candidate, Eric Aphane. The political irony to the narrative was that just over a week ago van Staden took pride of place in the news headlines, sharing a moment of social cohesion with ANC heavyweight, Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa. This was on the occasion of Mandela Day last month. In his speech, Maimane said ahead of the local government elections last year, there were certain elements who dared that the DA and lefttist parties such the EFF could not work together, which was not true. “But I’m here today to tell you they were wrong. Because here we are in a

In fact, it works better than any government the towns of Modimolle, Mookgophong and Vaalwater have had before. For the first time in years, things are getting done here,” he said to loud applause. Maimane said what brought the coalition partners together was their common concern for the welfare of the people.

The South African Youth Council (SAYC) in Limpopo recently launched its advocacy programme aimed at benefiting young people. SAYC provincial secretary, Tshepiso Boskraal, unveiled a plan for the establishment of youth directorates across the local municipalities. He said the SAYC supported nationwide calls for free education, specifically at tertiary level. Boskraal said the council would double its efforts to make sure young people had a fair share of the State Procurement Budget, across all spheres of officialdom. The council would also continue to advocate for the establishment of a SMME development fund, he said. Meanwhile, the council held its TriGeneral Assembly from Friday, 21 to Sunday, 23 July. The summit was aimed at nominating a new national leadership collective. It was overwhelmingly resolved to nominate Thembinkosi Jossopu from Western Cape as president, Tumi Zwane (Gauteng) as his deputy, and Lerato Mofokeng (Mpumalanga) as treasurergeneral. No reasons were advanced as to why there were no nominations from the home province. SAYC Limpopo Provincial Secretary Tshepiso Boskraal. Photo: Lizzy Bapela

Justin Steyn A field guide at a game lodge outside of Bela-Bela is recovering in hospital after being struck on his hand by the highlyvenomous puff adder. According to the Waterberg Advanced Paramedics Assistance’s spokesman, Andy Gill, the incident took place on Wednesday, 26 July. “We were called to a game lodge in the area for a patient who was bitten by a puff adder. On arrival the hand was already swollen and puncture marks were evident,” he said. He said the man was placed on a drip, his arm immobilized, and was then transported to a hospital in Pretoria, which had anti-venom in stock. Bela-Bela snake catcher, Cor Viljoen, said he took note of the situation and gave The BEAT a rundown on puff adder

bites. “These snakes are not naturally dangerous unless provoked. Most common bites occur when the snake is stepped on,” he said. According to Viljoen, puff adders favour flat arreas where they can hide and catch prey. “They will be found in areas that are flat and with a lot of scattered leaves or rubble. This makes it easier for them to ambush prey which consists mostly of rats.” Geographically, Viljoen said most puff adders in Bela-Bela could be found in Noodhulp and Eersbewoon. When bitten by a puffadder, Viljoen advised people not to panic, but to seek medical help. “Walking around gradually should help in thinning the venom. Seek medical assistance as quickly as possible. Puff adder bites very seldom have fatal results, but one can never be sure,” Viljoen explained.

Andries van der Heyde Controversial Bela-Bela municipal manager Morris Maluleka has mounted the proverbial horse into the sunset, and was said to be relocating to Brits in the North West. The municipality head stepped down on Monday, 31 July, during the final ordinary council meeting. His term in office had officially come to an end. In his closing remarks, a defiant Maluleka – who had attracted controversial allegations from many quarters - reiterated he would never apologise for stepping on anyone’s toes during his term, due to the fact that it

was part of his job. Several attempts to remove him came to naught, with Maluleka clinging to his portfolio as the town’s most powerful bureaucrat. The man raised many eyebrows when he extended his gratitude to, among others, DA Councillor Kobus van der Merwe, with whom he said he had “an interesting relationship.” “I would like to express my gratitude towards the ANC councillors, but especially Kobus van der Merwe from the DA, with whom I had an interesting relationship. I think all would agree that it is time for me to go, but I will state this – I have never been happy with the way the municipality was being run, and that council should do more.” He continued: “Good luck to all. I assure you, I will not be back.” Chief financial officer Khatu Maposa’s term had also come to an end. He is currently working in the Rustenburg area, where the proverbial sun sets.

annual Special Premier’s Provincial Intergovernmental Forum (SPIGF), held in Polokwane on 26 July. The SPIGF was launchjed at the Bela-Bela Forever Resorts in recent months. Provincial government spokesperson, Phuti Seloba, said the forum was aimed at addressing some of the challenges identified in the 2015/2016 Municipal Audit Outcomes report. The Forum was also designed to discuss and asses the performance of municipalities since the last SPIGF. The summit was attended by local municipality mayors, heads of departments and other high-ranking officials. The state of service delivery, among others, was top of the agenda. Provincial Treasury MEC, Rob Tooley, delivered a report on the municipal support programme.

the motorist was given a rude awakening on Wednesday, 2 August, as the stones smashed head on into the windshield. Mzamane Ringane The National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) in partnership with a clothing chain store put a smile on the faces of 98 learners at Letamong Combined School on Thursday, 27 July. This school is located on a farm outside Mookgophong. NECT leadership and management coach, Makoma Phatudi, said two deserving schools were selected from across Limpopo. She said the farm school in Mookgophong was selected because kids there walked long distances to their place of learning. Phatudi sent out a clarion call, asking the

broader business community to assist the kids in whatever way. The learners received the donated shoes with mixed emotions. Grade 7 learner Johannes Mokobane (14) was all smiles after receiving his pair, while Grade 5 learner Lauralee Makgeta choked and broke down in tears, when she was asked to render the vote of thanks. She was, under the circumstances, able to recite a self-composed poem in tribute of the late former President Mandela. Letamong Combined School principal Mahlodi Joseph Maoto said he was happy that his school had been selected as one of the beneficiaries. He told The BEAT the donation would encourage children to continue with their lessons against all sorts of weather.

Justin Steyn A motorist travelling southwards on the N1 highway escaped serious injury after a stone was hurled at the car’s windshield by an unknown assailant. According to provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the motorist was given a rude awakening on Wednesday, 2 August, as the stone smashed head on into the windshield. “A motorist was assailed in the early early hours of the day, on the N1 just past the Middlefontein off-ramp. A stone went through the vehicle’s windscreen but fortunately no injuries were reported,” Mojapelo said. Acording to Mojapelo, the motorist saw

a stationary vehicle from which the stone was allegedly thrown. The motorist has since refused to open a case. The Modimolle Community Policing Forum has raised concern over the incident, and has warned motorists to be vigiulant when travelling past the offramp, which is the same spot where a truck overturned following a burst tyre. One person died while two others were rushed to hospital following the latter accident. This particular accident resulted in traffic jams throughout the Waterberg district. The towns of Modimolle, Mookgophong and Bela-Bela were badly affected by traffic jams, and worse still, at the end of the month.

Mountain View (Spa Park) on tenterhooks TK Mashaba Uneasy calm returned to the embattled Mountain View (Spa Park) in the aftermath of a violent flare-up on Wednesday 26 July. Early on Monday 31 July erratic residents were awaiting an extra-ordinary council meeting, from which Bela-Bela Mayor Jeremiah Ngobeni was expected to provide the way forward. The meeting is a sequel to an outbreak of violent protests by residents over a housing dispute. Community leader Keenan Alberts on Monday said the situation had somewhat returned to normal, and that residents were awaiting a response from the mayor. Speaking to residents during an impromptu mass meeting, the mayor impressed on them he did not have immediate information at his disposal regarding the housing crisis, promising to report back shortly. Angry residents had barricaded streets with burning tyres, charging the municipality had reneged on a promise to build 500 RDP houses in the area. The protest forced the closure of Spa Park Primary School and Jinah Park Primarty School, with many unable to report for work on the day. The municipality, it has been reported, had allegedly decided to build only 250 houses, which angered residents. Bela-Bela acting station commissioner, Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, said there had been no arrests and that the police were keeping an eye on the situation. Members of the police had descended on the area in eight vans and an armoured personnel carrier to maintain order, at the height of the protest.

Waterberg’s day of snarl-ups Justin Steyn Peak-hour traffic in large parts of the Waterberg was badly affected by bumper-to-bumper snarl-ups, due to a horrific truck accident on the N1 northbound highway between Modimolle and Mookgophong. At least one person has been reported dead after one of the truck’s tyres burst, skidding and collapsing onto a private vehicle traveling from the opposite direction. Two others, reportedly members of the same family, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the local hospital. Of the three Waterberg towns affected by the traffic jams, Modimolle was the worst hit. Reports here suggest Lilian Ngoyi Street towards the township and local hospital was chock-a-block, with vehicles moving bumper-to-bumper on the way to access the R101 to Mookgophong. The movement of emergency vehicles like ambulances could have been affected badly. In Mookgophong traffic head, Arie Opperman, said the N1 had been

closed for the whole day due to the accident. He said traffic was diverted to the R101 and the worst affected was Pierneef Street and First Street. Two pedestrians were reportedly knocked in the hustle and bustle traffic jam. In Bela-Bela the local township was transformed into a millipede of trucks and vehicles, with savvy unemployed youths taking advantage of the situation by selling cooldrink, water and loose cigarettes to stranded morotists. Traffic was also diverted from the N1 northbound, through town and the townsghip towards the R101. According to the spokesperson for the provincial department of roads and transport, Joshua Kwapa, the collision was the apparent result of a burst tyre. “At about 07:00 am a truck transporting maize meal collided with an oncoming light vehicle. It has been said that the truck had a burst tyre, with the driver losing control and collided with an oncoming car before overturning,” Kwapa

said. He said one of the three occupants in the light vehicle died on the scene. “There were three people traveling in the car, a family as we understand, and one woman was declared dead at the scene. Two others, a two-year-old infant and an adult male were rushed to a nearby hospital.” Kwapa said the driver of the truck escaped with minor injuries. Motorists using the highway were advised to divert to the R101. Warrant Officer George Ledwaba of the Mookgophong police said a case of culpable homicide was being probed. Tel: (011) 447-1264/5/6

Kids showcase their skills in Modimolle Mzamane Ringane The creme de la creme of Modimolle’s entertainment circuit was on show, during a contest from across genres hosted at Phagameng High School on Saturday, 29 July. The contest was part of a broader workshop by the Institute of Sport. Dance groups, musicians and cultural groups took part in the event. Organisers used the event to promote a healthy lifestyle for both performers and their audience, and also drove home the need to push back alcohol and substance abuse. At the end of the action-packed day, a local hip-hop trio known as Ghetto Squad emerged the winners, taking home a trophy and R600 in prizemoney. Freedom Dance group came second, and also received a trophy. Karabo Mabotja, who co-organised the event together with fellow students, told The BEAT the interest shown by local artists was humbling. She said they would look into the possibility of hosting other events, with the main objective being to expose local

talent. Guest speaker, ward councillor Rufus Magoro commended the students for a

great first attempt at events management. Magoro said there was an abundance of talent in Modimolle, but the challenge

remained lack of opportunities. He said it was the responsibility of the local community to support local talent.

Fun and games for National Womans Day at Modimolle Mzamane Ringane The Addicted To Life (ATL) Athletics Club of Modimolle has invited members of the public to join celebrations for an event on Wednesday, 9 August. Activities were expected to commence at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium, starting at 9am. Potential participants could register at the venue prior to the event. The activities would be suitable for locals from the age of four to 60. The day was set to be full of fun games including tug o’ war, aerobics and track running. ATL secretary, Tsheletsi Selepe, said the main objective was to empower local women. Apart from the fun games, Selepe said they would be launching a sanitarytowels programme. “Contrary to most initiatives where sanitary pads are donated once off, we are looking at a recurring contribution programme,” he said. The Modimolle event would also focus on raising awareness against the violation of women and children’s rights. The Best Woman of the Day would receive a trophy. National Women’s Day is commemorated annually on 9 August, to remember the 1956 anti-dompas protest march on the Union Buildings, by upwards of 20 000 women.

Massive under-17 tournament headed for Phagameng township Mzamane Ringane Soccer talent from across the Waterberg and beyond, would be showcased in Modimolle, when the local La Masia Football Club hosts a soccer tournament at the Ephraim Mogale Stadium on Saturday, 5 August. A total of eight teams from Mokopane, Mookgophong, Bela Bela and Polokwane, together with the hosts, were scheduled to do battle at the local venue. The deputy chairperson of La Masia FC, Letlhogonolo Motau, said the event would serve to unearth and nurture hidden talent. He called on members of the community to come in their numbers to support the tournament. “As much as education is the key to a better future, it is also important to help youngsters discover their talent in other aspects of life,” he said.

Motau said they invited teams from beyond the Waterberg, so as to give local players and coaches an opportunity to network with their equals from elsewhere in the province. The Modimolle team was founded by ambitious football player, Tshepo Selamolela, who is currently plying his trade at SAB League’s Troublemakers FC. The name La Masia originates from the youth academy of the Spanish side FC Barcelona. Selamolela had previously told The BEAT he was inspired by the academy which remains a significant factor in FC Barcelona’s success. La Masia FC’s Khomotso Mokhanda and Ofentse Matjila. The players were selected from the categories of under-13, under-15 and under-17. The bonus with regards to playing at the Pretoria trials was that scouts from professional and semi-professional academies descend on these events to look for talent. Local Blue Birds FC coach and referee, Isaac Dlamini, said the arrival of the COP Sports Academy in Bela-Bela had been anticipated for a long time.
