Pole-Nkosi is the pioneer of two successful businesses, namely Motheo Wa Modimolle and Tshireletso Traffic and Road Management. She said it was part of her responsibility as a businesswoman to give back to the community the originated from. The businesswoman said that her wish is to see many young people from Modimolle playing prominent role, and also highlighted that she would like to create many employment opportunities in the area. She urged young people to focus on their education and do away with excessive drinking and smoking, as that would not bear them good fruits.

Cunning thief walks out with large generator Justin Steyn Staff at Coastal Hire in Bela-Bela have been left clueless for more than two weeks after a large generator with a value of R11 000 was allegedly stolen from the store. According to one of the salesmen, Danmore Ncube, the incident happened on Friday 21 August, when a man known as Dempi Makwena said that he wanted to buy a generator. Makwena told Ncube that he was the principal of “Maope Secondary School” and that he had been looking for a generator for one of the school’s classrooms so that students could have access to their computers during load shedding. Ncube added that Makwena offered to pay with a cheque but the store’s hire-controller Fred Pieterse, refused because it was seen as a risk for the store. “We do not accept cheques unless we have known the customer for a long time. In this case we had no knowledge of Makwena and refused to accept a cheques,” said Pieterse. Ncube said Makwena asked for the store’s bank details and soon left, but later returned with a proof of payment “or something that seems like it.” “Shortly after Makwena’s cheque was

refused, he asked for our bank details. We gave it to him and he returned with an online proof of payment from First National Bank (FNB) that looked very real.” Makwena was soon gone with a 6.0 Huyndai KVA generator, but to this day no money had been paid into Coastal Hire account. “We took Makwena’s car registration number and found out that the identity number he gave was false and I think the car in which he was driving in number plates are false,” said Pieterse. According Pieterse Makwena drove a blue GP-registered Renault Clio and there are apparently some people in Bela-Bela who have seen Makwena before. The case is currently being investigated by the police in Bela-Bela and no arrests have been made at this stage. A consultant from FNB told The BEAT that the account number from which the money allegedly had been paid to Coastal Hire was not an FNB account number, and that customers will be able to contact the bank’s head office and do an online verification inquiry if an account name or number seems suspicious. “We just want to warn the public against this man and that businesses should do proper research if Internet transactions are done,” said Pieterse.

Spar’s premiere boerewors maker laid to rest TK Mashaba Tears flowed as mourners arrived to pay their last respects to Nthabiseng Dlamini, who was working at the Spar Supermarket’s butchery section until his recent death. “He was a quiet guy who was always hands-on at work,” said butchery supervisor Poppy Moselane. “He always loved people.” Spar’s butchery manager, Santjie de Jager, also sent her condolences to the deceased’s family. “Spar’s butchery won’t be the same without him,” she said. “Rest in peace.” Thabang Ledwaba, a relative of Dlamini’s, said that although his sudden passing was hard, people should celebrate his life instead. Dlamini passed away after apparently committing suicide on Wednesday, 19 August. Dlamini leaves behind a son, Lethabo.

Two criminals await sentencing after pleading guilty

Stolen items were confiscated and taken back to the rightful owners. Photo: Lizzy Bapela Lizzy Bapela Two suspects charged for housebreaking and theft following incidents in Bela-Bela recently, are awaiting their court date for sentencing from the Regional Court. The two, Nkosinathi Sebata and Master Chauke are Zimbabwean nationals. They were arrested on Wednesday, 19 August and appeared before the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 August. According to Detectives’ commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla, the two’s case was remanded to Monday, 31 August as their profiles were not ready for bail application. He said that they pleaded guilty, resulting in their case being referred to the Regional Court, which has not yet released a date for the sentencing. He added that most of the owners of the items that were stolen came forth to identify them and they were all given them back. Among the stolen items were TV sets, electrical appliances, salon equipment, groceries, cutlery, bedding, clothes and other household items. The BEAT interviewed the suspects and they denied having stolen the items, saying that they were arrested instead for buying them but the police confirmed otherwise. A team of detectives led by Sergeant Mokhabodi Nzotho raided the suspected spots following tip offs and thorough

investigations, and managed to find and confiscate all the items that were stolen in different houses in the township. Owners of the items told The BEAT that most of the items were still new and they were shocked to arrive at their homes after work to find out that their belonging had vanished. They were delighted to find their items and commended the police for the hard work.

‘Mojuku’ faces charges of corruption and impersonation Lizzy Bapela A former Police reservist from Bela-Bela appeared before the local magistrate’s court recently on charges of corruption and impersonating a police officer. 44-year old Fancy Jacob Motau, also known as Mojuku, was arrested on Thursday, 27 August, and appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 August. The Hawks’ Anti-Corruption Unit in Limpopo received information from a complainant that Motau was collecting money from him under the presence that Motau would stop the police and Gambling Board officials from raiding his lodge. A spokesperson from the Hawks, Lieutenant Robert Netshiunda, said in a statement that the complainant operated gambling machines without proper documentation. “The complainant became suspicious when the police raided his lodge despite him having paid more than R35 000 in several instalments to the alleged fake cop,” said Netshiunda. “An investigation will be launched to ascertain why the former

reservist still possessed a police appointment card and a wallet with a police badge on it.” Bela-Bela Police spokesperson Constable Maria Maleto said that investigations are already underway to ascertain what had happened. Motau is reported to have been in possession of a firearm when he was arrested. One complainant recently visited The BEAT’s offices to voice her concerns. Baby Mataboge alleged that the accused was in the habit of arriving unannounced at her home looking for her brother, and vandalized her furniture when they could not find him. She also alleged that the accused and a companion shot her brother, Sello Mataboge, in the foot while he was trying to flee. Detectives’ Commander Lieutenant-Colonel Abel Phetla confirmed to The BEAT that an officer appears to have shot Mataboge, but maintains that the claims of harassment are false. The weapon of the officer involved has been sent to ballistics for testing. Motau was remanded to police custody and is expected back in court on Friday, 25 September.

ANC Limpopo speaks out on suspension of Speaker of the Provincial Legislature Lizzy Bapela The ANC in Limpopo temporarily suspended the Speaker of the provincial legislature Merriam Ramadwa and her membership from the party, pending the outcome of her disciplinary hearing. The ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) served the notice of suspension on Ramadwa on Saturday, 15 August and the party’s provincial secretary Nocks Seabi issued a statement on the matter during a media briefing that was held at the BelaBela Forever Resorts on Monday, 17 August. Seabi indicated that the temporary suspension is in line with Rules 25.9; 25.56 and 25.60 of the ANC Constitution and said that she will be served with a charged sheet within 30 days of her receipt of her letter of suspension. He added that the reasons for suspension and instituting disciplinary proceedings against Ramadwa are detailed in the letter, which remains privileged between her and the ANC. Seabi stated that implications of her

suspensions are that her membership is temporarily suspended and cannot act as a member including at a branch level; also that she cannot represent the ANC in any capacity including as a public representative. It is reported that Seabi signed Ramadwa’s letter of suspension on Saturday, 15 August, which states that she was instructed not to enter premises of the legislature following her suspension. According to media reports, the letter further states the reasons for the provincial working committee’s (PWC) decision to instruct her to relinquish the position of the Speaker. The reasons include alleged failure or refusal to work with ANC deployees in the provincial legislature and to execute the party’s instruction as its deployee as the Speaker of the provincial legislature; placing the ANC in the Limpopo legislature in disrepute and gross insubordination to the structures of the ANC in the province. The letter further states that the PWC considered Ramadwa’s “misconducts and her flagrant defiance” and their impact on the reputation of the ANC as serious.

Maimane takes Vision 2029 Tour to Limpopo Lizzy Bapela

ANC’s always changing policies that South Africans cannot find work. “We want to make sure that mines know policy frameworks and for municipalities to develop the towns around mining areas because our people who live there, live in the most deplorable conditions you can find. We want to make sure that we establish healthy places for our people to live in and build a South Africa that is thriving in terms of its own economy. In the DA governed area, unemployment is going down, not up like where the ANC governs. “The ANC is a party that looks after one person that is Jacob Zuma, instead of looking after the poor people who put them in government by voting for them. Load shedding and un-serviced sewage are also a concern and it is the responsibility of a particular municipality to look after its people. How do you let people live in an area where sewerage pipes cross the streets where people and small children pass? This is the government that is interested in itself rather than the people. Only Jacob Zuma and his allies matter the most to them and not the poor people who need basic services such as housing, water, sanitation and electricity,” said Maimane. He further said that the DA is a party for all and that they will make sure that they take over un-serviced municipalities in the coming local government elections so that people can get services that they so much deserve.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) leader and public favourite Mmusi Maimane visited Limpopo Province on the weekend of Saturday, 15 and Sunday, 16 August as part of the national Vision 2029 Tour. Hundreds of people including the party’s members and councillors, as well as ordinary community members flocked to different venues in their communities to listen to the leader’s address on the campaign tour. In Thabazimbi, the event took place at the Regorogile Community Hall on Sunday, 16 August, where the DA Limpopo leadership led by Member of the Provincial Legislature (MPL) Jacques Smalle and those from the national leadership including Member of Parliament Desiree van der Walt joined in. Other gatherings took place at the Olifantshoek Sports Field and Tshikota Community Hall in Makhado, as well as Lenyenye in Tzaneen. Vision 2029 is the DA’s programme of action for building a better South Africa through 10 years of a DA national government from 2019 to 2029. It is also an expansion of the party’s Values Charter based on the values of Freedom, Fairness and Opportunity. In his address, Maimane said that the DA is not a party for a certain race or group of people but for every person who is interested in joining. He added that their mandate is to serve all citizens where they govern and not just those who voted for the party. He also said that the ANC demands membership cards from people applying for EPWP (Expanded Public Works Program) positions. He also said that unemployment in the country is a challenge and is worrying and it has DA supporters from across Waterberg went to Thabazimbi for everything to do with the fact that the their leader’s address. EFF responds to Thabazimbi intervention Lizzy Bapela The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Thabazimbi expressed their concern over the Limpopo MEC for CoGHSTA (Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs) Makoma Makhurupetje’s decision to appoint financial expert Patrick Khonou in the local municipality as an intervention strategy resulting from the municipality’s financial state. The party regards this as pure ignorance and immunity to any form of accountability, as well as a corrupt dynamic between the municipal executive led by Mayor Patricia Mosito amd the ANC Waterberg Regional Chaiperson Morris Mataboge. The EFF said that the Department is responsible for local government affairs, but did not take action against the dire situation of the municipality by not invoking Section 139 of the Constitution

and the MGMA (Municipal Financial Management Act). They added that this served as a continuation to undermine the people of Thabazimbi and consumers at large. The EFF in Thabazimbi’s sub-regional chairperson Kopo Motshegwa said that they plan to write to the Offices of the MEC, seeking their intervention to put the municipality under administration. He added that they strongly believe that it is in the best interest of the community for actions to be taken to address the situation. “We call on state institutions guarding our democracy to investigate as a matter of urgency the status quo of this municipality for failing to deliver basic services to its communities. We will engage on a persuasive process to make sure that consumers and the community reject this process with the contempt it deserve and embark on a legislative process to enable the MEC for great consideration. We will also mobilise communities, business sector,

Some community members at Regorogile’s Matikiring section in Thabazimbi still have to queue for basic services such as water. Photo supplied NPO’s and rates payers to withhold payments of services in a form of protest to the useless decision by the MEC and her department in exonerating those liable for the mess to be held accountable,” said Motshegwa.

The EFF encouraged everyone in Thabazimbi to partake in the services delivery mass-protest action scheduled for Wednesday, 23 September, to demand accountability and better services to the people.

The terrorist group ISIS has conquered vast swaths of Syria and the Middle East. They are marked by their supposed religious fervour, and by their disrespect. They do not respect women, they do not respect the law, they do not respect life, and they most certainly do not respect history. This is shown by the fact that, this week, they demolished the Temple of Bel in Palmyra, Syria. This temple has been standing for over two thousand years, and it has been flattened. ISIS executed an 82-year old man, Khaled al-As’ad, who had spent his life preserving antiquities in the ancient city. Al-As’ad had refused to point them to the location of irreplaceable relics that had been hidden to save them from destruction. Archeologists are frantically trying to make complete records of as many ancient sites in Syria as they can, often begging help from locals. They are trying to save what they can, in the hope that they may be able to resurrect something when the dust settles. It will not be the same, though, not by a long shot. In their hubris, ISIS have decided that relics of the country’s preIslamic past are sacrilegious and must be destroyed. This reminds one of Europe during the Middle Ages, and their earnest attempts to censor great classical works of art. It also reminds one, albeit only vaguely, of certain efforts here in South Africa to erase or rewrite the past. We do not have two thousand years of history. We do not have temples as old as time. We do have a history of our own, though. We have a history of people who have lived and died for South Africa, and we should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing these attempts to erase and rewrite history. We should be ashamed of ourselves for allowing statues to be moved, monuments defiled, and the history books to be censored. In the end, our shared history is all that binds us as a nation, and if we lose that, we stand to lose so much more in time. In a hundred years, or five hundred, nobody will care about the politics of the day, but our children’s children will surely judge us harshly for destroying what should have been theirs.

Seema, along with his school, won the Siyadla Games and reached the provincial level. He was awarded the chance to attend the study programme which will start in Gauteng in October, while the school received an award of R10 000. Seema could not contain his joy.

School at loggerheads with wood sellers again Justin Steyn The staff at Hoërskool Warmbad have expressed their concern about the return of wood vendors who choose to conduct their business near the school. The BEAT reported on the problem in May 2014, and was told that the hawkers who operate on the R516 en route to Thabazimbi have become a problem for learners and educators. At the time the school’s principal, Spikkels de Wet, said that the hawkers have become a problem especially at the school’s music facility. “They entered the school premises and used our bathrooms without permission,” said De Wet. De Wet said that in most cases the hawkers would make use of the ditch leading to the back entrance of the school to relieve themselves. It is alleged that they live and sleep in the same area near the school, and De Wet claims that this has left the area with an unpleasant smell. A year later, it seems that the sellers have returned despite their removal by local authorities. “The wood vendors have

returned and this has become a concern for us and our learners. I think we should write to the municipality and insist that they intervene in this situation,” said De Wet. Complaints have also been made that wood is being stored in and around the school. About this, De Wet said that he is not aware of wood being stored on the premises, but that it would be removed if found. Hannalie Kriek, an educator at the school’s Music Centre, said that she is worried for her safety when teaching music lessons after school. “I often find that wood vendors are on the premises collecting water from the taps or using the bathrooms without anyone’s permission,” she said. “It’s quite worrying because we don’t know these people or if they would hurt our learners.” Kriek is also concerned about traffic congestion caused by the wood sales. “There is a lot of congestion on the road in front of the school sometimes, because people are blocking the road to buy wood or the sellers are blocking it to unload. So far no accidents have happened yet, but something has to be done,” she said. Modimolle police spokesperson Warrant Officer James Findlay and his colleagues visited Sonstraal School on Monday, 24 August to address the learners about drugs and bullying in schools. The visit was conducted as part of the police’s interaction programme with schools within the area in order to keep role players alert and ensure everyone’s safety especially that of the learners at all times. The awards ceremony was hosted by an organisation known as Friends and Fun, at the Peter Nchabeleng Community Hall. Scores of women from various segments of the community, including the members of the ANC Women’s League (ANCWL) were in attendance. Women of various professions as well as those in leadership were the recipients of these awards following their contribution in building the community of Modimolle. The mastermind behind this initiative, Phillip Seema, said that the event would be held annually during the month of August. He said that their medium term goal is to build centres for the elderly women of Modimolle. He commended all the women for playing an immeasurable role in shaping the lives of Modimolle citizens. Mojafela Makanye, who is also part of the organising committee, said they were happy with the attendance. “The support was

huge, and we feel that we managed to host a successful event. We are hoping that next year we will do better than we did this time around. We are also grateful towards everyone who attended this event,” he said. Three, wrongfully arrested, seek redress

The store that was robbed. Photo: TK Mashaba

TK Mashaba The three Bela-Bela men who were arrested last week are taking the matter up with their lawyers. John Matjila (22), Nazir Sahiel (30) and Daniel Matjila (26) were arrested on Tuesday, 18 August, and released on Thursday. They say that they were arrested in full view of their friends and neighbours by police officers in five vehicles. They were taken to the cells and interrogated. Police officers demanded to see the gun used in the robbery, and wanted to know where the stolen goods were. “We were asked to produce the gun, but to the best of my knowledge none of us even own a gun,” said one of the men. “We want our names to be cleared,” he said.

“People in the township saw when the police came to fetch us for something we didn’t even do.” The three men were kept at the police station for three days before being released, and will allegedly be filing a case against the police. The police later arrested Frans Kekana, William Khoza, and Karabo Langa, who were allegedly found in possession of groceries believed to have been stolen from the robbed store. The three men appeared in the Bela-Bela Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 August. According to Bela-Bela police detectives’ commander Abel Phetla, Kekana, Khoza, and Langa were also found in possession of suspected stolen airtime and cigarettes as well as a toy gun allegedly used in the robbery.
