It was agreed that you are more than welcome to contact any member of the committee, who would then seek the relevant member’s permission to provide their phone number. In this day and age of computer hacking and scams, the privacy of our members is paramount. On a different note, if you have changed any of your details please remember to advise the membership Secretary. membership@tlas.org.au __________________________________________________ WELFARE Vale. ART LOVERS REVIEW Archibald Prize Art Gallery of NSW Sydney Since its inception in 1921 the Archibald Prize has been the most prestigious art competition in Australia. Often controversial , widely debated and sometimes totally baffling. The prize is awarded to the best portrait of a known identity from the arts, politics, sport or of celebrity status.

Your help in spreading the word is crucial, as will be your involvement in the setting up and receiving of the paintings. Still trying hard for more sponsorship, call me if you know of anyone.

I am a lover of realism so the winning portrait from the Archibald by Mitch Cairns is personally not my cup of tea. The painting depicts Agatha Gothe Snape an artist herself, it looks similar to works in the style of Picasso that make little sense to me, the judges thought otherwise awarding the first place to this colourful and thought provoking piece.

Regards, GAIL BRIGDEN, Art Director Fab Fakes mailto:gail@tlas.org.au

TLAS Connections to the Archibald

The Wynne Prize is for the best landscape painting of Australian scenery or figure sculpture. Normally this section is a must to see, for this competition I could only pick out one work that was remotely like an Australian landscape, it was a watercolour by John Murray of Bellinger River Thore. It was beautifully done with great detail and managed to win the Trustees Watercolour Prize for 2017.

TLAS member Leone Meatchem is one proud mum. Her son Phil, has a painting that was a finalist in this year's Archibald Prize. The acrylic painting is titled "Aah yeah, that guy" pictured here with the subject, actor Francis Greenslade. It seems everyone knows the face but not the name.Congratulations Phil (and mum). More details here: www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/prizes/archibald/2017/29847/

The Sulman Prize is always full of unexpected and sometimes grim studies, the more outlandish and shocking the projects and murals are the happier the selection committee must be. The Packing Room Prize this year was really outstanding and was a worthy winner of what a true portrait is to me. The Master with the brushes was Peter Smeeth who managed to capture the lovely Lisa Wilkinson of television fame perfectly. She is seen reclining on a white couch in a very relaxed pose , the great skill of the artist is evident as the likeness is remarkable. Peter also won the Sulman Prize several years ago with an unforgettable depiction of what he called The Artist’s Fate. I could really relate to that painting, knowing the struggle most artist’s have to go through to be accepted and recognized for their work. I would have to say I was disappointed this year with the exhibition, after seeing so many incredible works hung in past years in the competition, maybe realism is a fading art form. Archibald Prize runs till 22nd October 2017.

Phil’s works are very impressive and you’ll be amazed at the quality, particularly the beautiful lighting that enhances his portraits, no doubt due to his 40 year background in film and television production. You can view a portfolio of artwork on his website https://philmeatchem.com/

KAREN MEDCALF

FAB FAKES Dear Art Society,

Co-indecently, another link to the Central Coast and a finalist is local artist Peter Smeeth. Peter picked up the Packing Room Prize for his painting of Lisa Wilkinson AM http://tinyurl.com/y7pc4n4k

It has been a tough deal trying to get sponsorship this year for our Fab Fakes. The new Central Coast Council were not so giving as last year, which meant we have to find the extra $4000 to cover our costs. As we stand we will be ok, but with prudent spending leading up to the event, and with the help of our wonderful PR company and Imag, at no cost to us, we will get the message out there.

It’s a companion piece to his painting of her husband Peter Fitzsimons. Peter Smeeth had an exhibition about a year ago at the Gosford Regional Gallery.

This year, we will not have rostered manpower, nor a raffle, at the suggestion of the Art House. This also simplifies our commitment. There is no cost for the venue for the exhibition, only for the opening night with champagne and nibbles.

Oh, and speaking of ‘packing room’, do you recall the article on Lucy Culliton in the July Newsleter? Lucy Culliton’s painting of the ‘chief packer’ who retires this year, was also a finalist in the 2017 Archibald. http://tinyurl.com/ybpw6phb

Our invites to the opening, will go to the exhibitors and partners, also to committee and helpers. Others not involved will be asked to pay $10 per person to attend, or if bringing extra guests.

We’re indeed fortunate for the wealth of talented and inspired artists here on the Central Coast. Let’s hope we can foster that talent through TLAS and nearby art societies for generations to come. Mal

PASTELS WORKSHOP Some of us were obviously new to the medium of pastels however it was made all the easier with Judith Hoste in charge at the Pastels Workshop on August 12th. I think we were all very pleased with the results, despite our differing styles. TLAS President, Rasheeda, tried a new hi-visibility approach to her artwork – you’ll see the results at the next TLAS Members’ Meeting – don’t miss it!

MASK MANIA

At last month’s meeting Karen Williams displayed the first of our Mask Mania artworks, which will be an ongoing project for TLAS. We hope to see new masks each meeting and may also be featuring a “Carnivale” theme for one of our exhibitions next year. An excerpt from Karen’s paragraph describing her mask follows: “Accepting the challenge of painting a mask, mounted on a 20cm x 30cm canvas, I endeavoured to visually represent aspects of my art practice. The result is an artistic self-portrait. My passion is Creativity.” Karen’s full description is attached. What an imaginative first entry!!

Robert Chapman’s ceramics tutoring

Framing

Robert has kindly offered to tutor TLAS members on how to create his beautiful ceramics. He will do so at the Academy sessions over 3 days when he is the mentor for the day, starting with 23 Aug, and then 20 Sep and 18 Oct. You will be creating a tile as per the photo. Start time is 8.30 . Cost is $25 to cover supplies. No fee from Robert. The standard $10 Academy fee will also be needed. Members were asked to sign Robert’s interest sheet at the last meeting. Contact Robert to see if there are still places available What a great opportunity to learn how to creat these lovely artworks. We were fortunate to receive a wealth of expert advice from Carla Christie about a range of issues to be considered for effective and professional framing. Even those who have been practicing their art for a long time were able to pick up some very useful tips. Our thanks go to Carla for a great presentation.
