ART LOVER’S REVIEW Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age – Masterpieces from the Rijksmuseum Art Gallery of NSW Sydney An Artist I greatly admire once said to me that I had to focus only on one subject to become really proficient as a painter. Starting out I believed there was so much to learn I went about trying to tackle all manner of subjects to get a taste of what was really important to me. Still searching for my niche, always willing to view collections of exhibitions from the great Masters for inspiration and to wonder at their great talent.

SPECIAL EVENT AT 2017 AGM!

The exhibition of Rembrandt and the Dutch Golden Age is incredible, a once in a lifetime opportunity to absorb great masterpieces from the 17th century on tour from the Netherlands Rijksmuseum. Paintings range from dramatic seascapes, amazing portraits, still life subjects that are so lifelike, to ordinary domestic scenes of everyday life.

Thank you to our Publicity Officer, Mal Hamilton, for taking us through an interesting look at Fab Fakes past winners and contributors at our October 2017 Meeting. We were all better informed by the recollections of members attending the meeting. As well as that, Mal also showed us a surprising collection of images and facts about our founder, Robert Doyle. Robert’s son has given many of his father’s works to our President for safe keeping. Maybe we now need a volunteer historian to keep all this great heritage info on file and up to date? ____________________________________________________

Too many great works to mention here now but for me personally some were outstanding including the ‘Still Life with Golden Goblet’ by Pieter De Ring 1650-60. It was a sumptuous table laden with delicious food that looked so real and fresh you could almost smell and taste it. A seascape of ‘Warships in a heavy storm‘ by Ludolf Bakhuizen 1695 was a chilling portrayal of how dangerous sailing can be at sea. And to not mention the ethereal self-portrait of the Master himself Rembrandt van Rijn dressed as the Apostle Paul 1661 would be a gross omission of this review.

TLAS MEMBERS’ GENERAL MEETINGS AND ACADEMY For 2018 Members’ General Meetings are held on the 4th Thursday of the month from 10am to noon at the Uniting Church Hall, 204 The Entrance Road, Long Jetty. Cost is $5 covers morning tea and door prizes. Member’s Meeting 22 Feb 2018 10 am. Enjoy a cuppa and a chat about art. Raffles. Visitors welcome $5 Member’s Meeting Thurs 22 March 2018 Member’s Meeting Thurs 26 April 2018

Landscapes, river scapes and compositions of domestic life provide a compelling insight into the daily lives of the Dutch people. There is said to be an expert Dutch painter for every subject imaginable but only the great Rembrandt was Master of all he attempted to capture, no subject too challenging, preserving for all time images of important and ordinary people and events that will allow future generations a glimpse of what life was like in the 17th century.

TLAS Academy Style Sessions in 2018 for all mediums are held at the CWA Building, 1 Pacific Street, Long Jetty, from 9am to 12 noon on Wednesdays. News about new mini workshops and more for 2018 Academy will be announced at the February Members’ Meeting Cost is $10 for continuous morning tea.. February 2018 TLAS Learning Academy: 9 to 12 February 7, 14, 21, 28 March 2018 TLAS Learning Academy: Wed 7, 14, 21, 28 March

Exhibition closes on 18th February, hopefully this review will be published before then. It is an amazing collection of great artworks that are irreplaceable and priceless, one all Art Lovers would really love viewing. The spectacular venue of the Art Gallery of NSW is always worth visiting, an appropriate gallery for such a significant and important collection of artworks. KAREN MEDCALF

April 2018 TLAS Learning Academy: Wed 4, 11, 18 April Note: No session on 25th Anzac Day.

FEATURED TLAS MEMBER Pat Edwards

Some beautiful samples of Pat’s work.

Pat Edward’s work reflects her personality! Fresh, bright and cheerful. Passionate about flowers, landscapes and anything to do with the sea. According to our feature artist “Watercolour is the perfect medium to express the changing moods of the world around us. Bringing happy holiday memories of the seaside, or a reminder of a beautiful garden visited or a scene captured from the past to relive and treasure.” Pat was born in Kent, the “Garden of England”, and after taking art to O level GCE at school, she left to join the Women’s Royal Naval Service until she married in 1968. Pat emigrated to Perth, WA in 1969 and later lived in Meekathara and Port Hedland. Upon returning to the UK in 1972, Pat trained as a florist, rekindling her passion for flowers, and continued to paint during overseas travels to USA, Hong Kong, Cyprus and France.

Fish Or Chips

In 1997 she became a member of the Salcombe Art Club in Devon, a small holiday town on the south coast of Devon, well known for its beautiful sailing waters and a haven for yachtsmen. She also was a member of the Knightsbridge and South hams Art Clubs in Devon, having paintings in their many exhibitions. Collections went to Hong Kong, Europe and many other countries. Having also taken part in the jumelage en Couleurs in Cabourg, France in 1992. In 2004 Pat and her husband returned to the Central Coast to be near their family.

Dazzling Hibiscus Footnote: The catch phrase describing TLAS as ‘a friendly cheerful group where everyone wants to learn about art’ is a direct quote from Pat during my first session at TLAS Academy. MH ___________________________________________________

She joined the Gosford Regional Art Gallery exhibiting in two exhibitions in 2006. Since then, she has exhibited in a number of exhibitions in the Central Coast, Hunter Valley and Singleton, including a solo exhibition “Just Add Water” in Kilcare in 2010.

WOMEN IN ART EXHIBITION

Tuggerah Lakes Art Society decided to cancel the “Women In Art” exhibition scheduled for February and March 2018. The area allocated for the exhibition would have been just near the entrance of the Erina Library. Due to the many restrictions required to utilise this area together with a minimal passing audience, it was decided it would not be of benefit to exhibiting artists or the good of our society. The good news from all this effort is that we have been asked to organise the ‘Women In Art’ Exhibition for 2019. This will give us ample time to consult and organise. Something to look forward to early next year.
