A cacophony of sounds greets you in the morning as well as ‘Lacy’, a once caged and now rescued greyhound nudging me as I sip on a cup of hot coffee. This is Bibbenenluke Lodge, about an hour south of Cooma, where I’m on an assignment. I was commissioned as a favour by a former boss of mine to film his daughter, who just happens to be an artist.

Lucy Culliton gulps down her coffee and starts gathering the various foods for her ‘pets’. First stop are the pigeons, once racing ones donated by the widow of the former owner. They were just too much to look after. Mind I think the flock has since doubled in size and currently caged for protection from a few local eagles. Next are the ducks, then the chooks that share a cage with some fancy sulphur crested cockatoos that enjoy a good chat. You’re always greeted with a “hello” or a “scratch cocky”. Most of them came via WIRES including a crow that’s clever in catching some meaty morsels thrown by Lucy. It could have been the one that stood on Lucy’s head in a painting that was a finalist in the Archibald a few years back. Next on the list are a couple of pigs. I did ask if they supplied the hair for her brushes…doh, silly me. Did I mention the emus, the horses, oxen and the sheep, reared from when they were lambs. All are fed morning and afternoon.

JULY MEMBERS’ CHALLENGE: “Orange is the new Black”: The artist must feature orange and black as the hero colours but can include any other colours and textures. Any type of medium is fine. Painting, textiles, craft, sculptures …… _____________________________________________________

At last breakfast with another coffee and some toast and jam, then some painting time. Lucy has a huge studio on the property, with a glass wall that faces south. By the time I arrived all her paintings had been packed and sent to Sydney for her exhibition in William Street. One of them also included her entry for this year’s Archibald. A huge painting of ‘the packer’ who I’m told retires this year from the NSW Art Gallery. He sat for Lucy over three days. I did catch a glimpse from a photo – very impressive. It was a rare sunny morning so it was decided to paint outdoors. Lucy describes herself as a ‘realistic’ artist. I can’t help myself to ask questions as she sets up her easel and paint palette.

Why do you paint the canvas pink? You use black! Are you using impasto? Do you only use the one style of brush? Am I asking too many questions? It was then that I was invited to join her in painting the same subject. “Yay!” I rushed to the car to get my canvas and paints as she found another easel. So I begin, just glancing at her painting for starters. The subject was a trio of silver birch trees with only one tree still covered in autumn leaves. She happily commented on the spatial depth of my subjects, “maybe some lightness in the corner for balance” was one remark. An hour rolls by. I tried to keep up with her but paint was getting everywhere, particularly on my clothes – pretty much normal for me. And then she noticed the colour of my leaves “they look so much better than mine”, I thought she was just saying that for encouragement. “no really”, “what colour is that?” I was lost for words! Well I’m still walking on air weeks later.

Speaker MAY Meeting: MARION FARLEY Botanical Artist for Botanical Gardens, Sydney. Marion presented an engaging history of botanical art. I was surprised to hear that Australia has a long tradition of botanical art, starting with Joseph Banks in 1768, who pressed hundreds of plants between sheets of paper and later 17 engravers copied his illustrations, whose plates were stored until 1963. In 1988, their restoration was completed and published in colour. Some of his pressings can still be viewed in the Herbarium at Sydney Botanical Gardens. Next came George Raper, First Fleet, whose beautiful drawings were given to his mother on his death and stayed in an attic in Australia until discovered in 2004. Amazing! Marion also told of the Scott sisters, naturalists and artists, near Newcastle at Ash Island, who at the age of 14 and 16 years painted moths, butterflies and plants in watercolours. These were purchased in 1884 by the Australian Museum for 200 pounds. Marion was highly commended at Gosford Art Gallery for her painting of the date palms which still grow at site of the the sisters’ home. While Marion has been painting oils, abstracts and collage for many years, she really started botanical art from 2005 having attended a masterclass at the botanical gardens after she moved to the Central Coast. She talked about how she starts by doing a detailed tonal drawing in pencil and then colours with watercolour paint. The pieces she displayed were so fine and of course extremely beautiful. We were very privileged to have such an accomplished artist speak at our May meeting.

Lucy will do workshops – but explains she can’t stray far from her property. I think some societies try for weekends down in Bega. Her work is amazing. You’ll find it in the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery and the NSW Art Gallery. Her most recent exhibition The Residents of Bibbenluke Lodge had been almost sold out prior to its opening. You can see a small portion of what I filmed on this link: https://youtu.be/eNgIL3wZv-4 Mal Hamilton All paintings © Lucy Culliton _____________________________________________________ TLAS BAY VILLAGE EXHIBITION: 10 SEP We are now building up for this TLAS members’ only exhibition. Entry forms will be available for collection at the June Members’ Meeting. Time to get painting! _____________________________________________________ ART LOVER’S REVIEW Our regular reviewer, Karen Medcalf, has been extremely ill for some time with the flu and was unable to contribute one of her lovely reviews this month. We all wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her article next month.

FEATURED MEMBER Pam Patterson-Barrie Pam Pattersen-Barrie is a life member of TLAS together with her husband, Doc, who is as active and enthusiastic about art as Pam herself. She joined TLAS in 1997 and over the years has performed the role of Vice President, treasurer, editor of the newsletter and is currently the TLAS welfare officer. Pam’s art inspiration was her father, who won a scholarship to the Royal Art Society and spoke of heraldic art in the family history. She often talks about her childhood of spending hours drawing and painting (rather than listen to her teachers!) As a teen Pam studied at East Sydney Technical College and later at Fine Arts Open Foundation at Newcastle University. Art is a never-ending learning journey for Pam and she still attends workshops at every opportunity.

Pam has introduced many a Central Coast artist to the joys of watercolour painting, acrylics and oil painting during her art classes at the TLK Community College, including many members of TLAS. She has been tutoring for 11 years.

Sponsorship Opportunities 2017 Fab Fakes Art Exhibition The Art House, Wyong

Pam uses all mediums – whatever gives her the impression of what she is seeing. Sunsets are her inspiration – all the colours in the world and the silence and beauty of a sunset. Pam also enjoys painting religious icons, among many other subjects, and was privileged to be taught this style of painting at the Benedictine Monastery at Arcadia in Sydney by the son of a Russian icon painter.

15th to the 25th of November. It’s going to be the biggest Fab Fakes in its history, and undoubtedly the biggest event of its kind in Australia. We intend to promote the exhibition heavily through the Central Coast, NSW and the ACT via local news, social media and our dedicated website. www.fabfakes.org.au Support our event and come on board with one of the great sponsorship packages ranging from $500 to $2000. Please contact Rasheeda president@tlas.org.au T 02 4333 8387

Pam has exhibited at the Drummoyne Art Society (by selection) and the Lakes Festival where she was a prize winner. She has also been a prize winner in the Hopetown Park Art Studios Exhibition at Mudjee and at Lakes Community Arts, to name a few. Pam has a poignant story about her sunset obsession which involves serious life-threatening brain surgery she underwent in 2002. The surgeon was kind enough to waiver his $4,000 fee and as a thank you Pam gave him a lovely sunset watercolour painting. Her comment to him was, ”You have saved my sunset years so this is my thankyou to you.” Of course, the painting now hangs in his surgery. Since 2002 Pam has been involved with “Hospital Art” which is a not for profit charity. Volunteer artists (and non artists) work to give a creative activity (usually a large drawing on canvass) to residents

PAINTING TRIP TO THE WEST MACDONALD RANGES NEAR ALICE SPRINGS – Peter Tassell

It is obvious to me that Pam has devoted much of her life to art and it was a delight to learn about her creative endeavours. Written by one of Pam’s many art students.

In May, I went to Alice Springs for one week with a group of oil painters under the guidance of John Wilson. We had five days painting on location in the Western MacDonald Ranges. On arrival, we were treated to a welcome dinner at the 5 star resort hotel that overlooked the dry Todd River. Day One was a bus tour of the ranges for photographs followed by lunch at the Glen Helen Homestead,130 kms from Alice Springs. A few of us took a helicopter flight over Glen Helen Gorge and the Finke River. The following morning the painting started. On site for a 9am start, lunch under the shade of an old river gum then more painting until 1.30pm. On Wednesday, we started painting at Jessie Gap, just 15 kms from the base. This was a very enjoyable week as the subjects had rock walls of beautiful quartzite which fairly glows when the sun hits the gaps at around 10 in the morning and only lights the area for about 2 hours at the most.
