The metaverse
Developments in the metaverse and advancements in extended, augmented and virtual reality (ER, AR and VR) are already creating a revolution in healthcare, defence and education. Further advancements in medicine are predicted to improve patient outcomes, for example as more trainee surgeons and junior doctors use headsets to practise their skills, and tech usage in clinical settings goes beyond diagnostic medicine and consultations. Global business consultancy PwC states that while the metaverse is not fully ready for primetime, it is already adding value to businesses with more on offer in future. “Manufacturers will continue to use the metaverse’s new data to enhance digital twins in order to improve supply chains, manufacturing and logistics,” the consultancy states in its 2023 digital asset predictions. As environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives gain prominence in the boardroom, the metaverse will help businesses track the provenance of raw materials, reduce environmental abuses in the supply chain, and boost efficiencies, the firm states.
