NEXT GENERATION AD AND ADAS TECHNOLOGY COULD BE READY FOR A 2025 ROLLOUT.
With the first generation of AD and ADAS platforms already in use in commercial vehicles worldwide, Qualcomm Technologies has unwrapped the latest generation Snapdragon Ride Platforms. These are being built with leading 4-nanometer (4nm) systemon-chips (SoCs) and integrated Snapdragon Ride Vision stack. At the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2023, the company announced that the technology is sampling with major automotive Tier-1 suppliers, which are aiming to get it into global production vehicles in 2025. The advancements will help manufacturers produce even safer, more power-efficient and thermally optimised ADAS and AD solutions in their vehicles.
The platforms have been designed and assessed alongside safety experts across the automotive ecosystem, Qualcomm announced, and the Snapdragon Ride Platforms are engineered to allow for further customisation opportunities. These also offer the ability to adapt to evolving automotive architectures and can be augmented by dedicated artificial intelligence (AI) accelerators to support an expanding ADAS and AD operational design domain (ODD).
“As the industry’s only scalable and open system designed for ADAS and AD, we are pleased with the steady momentum our Snapdragon Ride Platforms have had since their introduction in 2020,” said Nakul Duggal, senior vice-president (VP) and general manager, automotive, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. “We attribute the success of our Snapdragon Ride Platforms to the strong relationships and collaborations we have with automakers and Tier1 ecosystem, and look forward to our continued efforts to innovate together to advance the industry’s efforts in delivering safe and secure ADAS and AD systems.”
His comments have been backed by bosses at some of the biggest Tier-1 suppliers in the automotive industry, including Continental and Bosch. Continental’s head of systems and software business, Jeremy McClain, said, “We fully support the software defined vehicle strategy with our systems and software solutions.”
Dr. Erik Rein, executive VP and board member, automotive electronics, Robert Bosch GmbH, said research and use of innovative solutions were

Yet, he points out, the World Health Organisation estimated recently that around 1.3million people are killed as a result of vehicle collisions every year worldwide, with another 50 million injured. These are statistics that vehicle manufacturers continuously aim to bring down. The latest developments in the quest to improve those statistics include wireless technology that allows vehicles to communicate directly with each other (V2V) and with roadside infrastructure (V2I). Even pedestrians (V2P) could be communicated with in future, as steps towards cellular vehicle to everything (C-V2X) are made, Jeff points out.
If a collision happens, footage from around the vehicle can be recorded and stored to the cloud. Software-defined vehicles will help simplify the resolution process for drivers, fleet managers, law enforcement, insurance companies, and other transportation service providers, Qualcomm predicts.
Valeo is the worldwide leader in ADAS equipping one in three new cars in the world with its technologies. Its comfort and driving assistance business group has 28 production sites and 17 research and development (R&D) centres around the world. It partners worldwide with automakers, as well as new actors in mobility. It aims to create mobility that is cleaner, safer and smarter through its innovations and focuses on four key domains – electrification, ADAS, reinventing interior experience and lighting. Valeo has 103,300 employees in 31 countries, 184 production sites, 21 research centres, 43 development centres and 16 distribution platforms. ahead of the curve,” said Marc Vrecko, president of Valeo's comfort and driving assistance business group. “As a leader in ADAS, Valeo works alongside Qualcomm Technologies on both hardware and software, and the Snapdragon Ride Platform has allowed us to develop an ADAS domain controller capable of managing all data flows from all ADAS sensors and processing all driving assistance functions.”
Hyundai Mobis senior VP and head of automotive electronics business unit R&D, Jae Ho Chang, said the firm was looking forward to developing and broadening its automotive product portfolio. “We applaud Qualcomm Technologies’ efforts in helping advance the ADAS and AD segment with their highperformance Snapdragon Ride Platforms,” he said.

As a start-up business, Hystar has patented technology that makes renewable electricity more affordable and accessible.
The innovative technology company leaders, chief executive officer Fredrik Mowill, chief technology officer Alejandro Barnett and chief product officer Magnus Thomassen, want to shake up the electrolyser market. Hystar’s particular process combines knowledge gained from the fuel cell industry with electrolyser technology. Users can produce up to 150% more hydrogen from Hystar’s systems compared with an alternative conventional PEM.
A spin-off from the Norwegian research institute SINTEF, the design was aimed at mass manufacturing from its inception. The technology, which splits water into hydrogen and carbon, also uses fewer materials and has been developed for the circular economy and an ethical, sustainable, greener future.
