elcome to the 61st Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival! It’s time to kick off spring in beautiful Winter Park with a time-honored tradition and a nationally recognized celebration of the creative arts. Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone involved. The festival is the culmination of endless volunteer hours from our dedicated board members, each and every one focused on a central aspect of putting on one of the nation’s best outdoor art festivals. Some of our 40 members specialize in communication skills or organizational acumen, while others provide much-needed strategic guidance and thoughtful support. The festival couldn’t happen without a myriad of additional support. Thank you to the City of Winter Park and its knowledgeable staff, who seamlessly manage festival logistics so that we may all enjoy the lovely Park Avenue and Central Park settings. Another big thank you goes out to all the volunteers who tirelessly help make the artists comfortable and our Children’s Workshop and the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit run smoothly. The student art exhibit is so popular that we ran out of room this year. So please save some time to peruse the artwork by our talented Orange County students and our museum partners’ activities. We’d also like to thank our sponsors. It’s partnerships with local organizations that provide the resources necessary to flawlessly present this exciting festival each year. Another vital element is the enthusiasm and support of our art-loving patrons and festival attendees. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. More than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for this year’s event. An independent panel of three judges selected the 225 artists exhibiting their works. The festival consistently ranks among the top juried fine-art festivals in the country. JUDGES Top-Notch Judges Bring International Expertise

udges for the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, who come from across the country, are selected annually for their in-depth knowledge and experience in multiple art media. Last October, they reviewed digital images from all festival applicants to select the exhibiting artists. Other artists were placed on wait lists. During the festival, the three-judge panel will review each booth to determine which artists will be eligible for awards. After a booth is selected, the artist will select one piece that best represents his or her entire body of work. Winners are determined by the judges on Saturday.

Kansas City, Missouri Dahlquist learned to use a camera and darkroom around the same time she was learning to ride a bicycle and write in cursive. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, she wrote her first artist statement as a child, in phonetic Texan, claiming for herself a life of travel and “tacking pitchers.” She has wielded a camera ever since. After spending her early career in commercial photography and film, Dahlquist revisited her childhood proclamation. Since 1998, she has shown her mixed media photography nationwide — from Miami to Seattle and just about everywhere else in between. Dahlquist has combined her wanderlust and her love of historic photographic processes with contemporary technology to create artwork that has won many awards and is found in hundreds of private and public collections. In addition to pursuing photography, Dahlquist is a facilitator for Artist Inc., a professional development program for artists. She travels nationally, speaking and conducting workshops on art-related business topics. In 2015, Dahlquist worked with the City of Kansas City and the Kansas City Economic Development Corporation to develop a microloan program for artists. She has received several prestigious grants and is cofounder and former owner of Locust Factory LLC, a collaborative studio and gallery. She is represented by Sager Braudis Gallery in Columbia, Missouri.

JOHN W. KINKADE

Loveland, Colorado Kinkade, founder and executive director of the National Sculptors’ Guild at Columbine Gallery and principal/co-owner of JK Designs, has worked with more than 200 artists and countless municipalities on 500-plus major public sculpture placements across the U.S. since 1992. “With each placement, our family grows as art truly connects,” says Kinkade. “The people I have been fortunate to work with — artists, clients, commissioners and so forth — become close friends. it shows in the designs and placements we create.” He has also consulted on numerous master plans for public and private outdoor sculpture gardens, including those in Little Rock, Arkansas; Southlake, Texas; Louisville, Colorado; Skagway, Alaska; and Cerritos, California. He was named one of the nation’s 40 Most Prominent People in the Arts by Southwest Art Magazine in 2011. In addition to traveling for installations and working with the gallery and the guild, Kinkade enjoys chairing the Annual Rotary Art Scholarship and Governor’s Art Show, among other ventures through the Rotary Club of Thompson Valley, Colorado. Interestingly, Kinkade was a practicing attorney for 20 years — from 1971 to 1991 — specializing in, among other areas, construction, probate and estate planning.

Cleveland, Ohio Young, a glass artist and professor emeritus at the Cleveland Institute of Art, has been recognized by scores of museums, galleries, colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Asia. In 2006, for example, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery acquired its second piece by Young for its permanent collection. Amphora … Save, from Young’s Matrix Series, is a construction of intricate and technically complex works created by flameworking borosilicate glass rods into layers of glass webs. In 2010, Young’s work was selected for New Glass Review 31, the annual survey of contemporary glass sponsored by the Corning Museum of Glass. In 2011, he was selected as a Creative Workforce Fellow, a program supported by the Cuyahoga County Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. In 2012, his work was published in 50 Years of Studio Glass — a selection of 50 top glass artists worldwide. In 2018, numerous works in Young’s Matrix Series were acquired by the Imagine Museum of St. Petersburg (Florida). In 1990, Young was selected as head of glass at Aichi University of Education in Kariya, Japan, where he was responsible for establishing the studio, designing and implementing the curriculum, and teaching the first glass program at a national university in Japan. 

ictor Bokas grew up against a backdrop of palm trees, beautiful beaches and sunbathers in the Florida Panhandle. Those influences surface in his paintings through vibrant colors, tropical icons and a good measure of whimsy. In 1987, life’s highway brought Bokas to Central Florida, where sun, fun and exuberant energy infused his work. In many of his pieces, Bokas pays homage to his Greek heritage. A self-described “collector of kitsch,” his studio is filled with vintage flea market finds. His collection is a source of inspiration, and items from it are often incorporated into his works. In Bokas’ paintings, grids, squares and other graphic design elements lend structure and direction. No doubt his long career as a graphic designer brings a sense of order to his hyper-imaginative settings.

The artist’s accomplishments are many, including design of a 15-by-85-foot mosaic floor (pictured above), dubbed Florida Vacation, for Orlando International Airport’s “A” Terminal. The work was installed by Italian masters of natural stone and glazed enamel. Most recently, he designed a wall installation for Orlando International Airport “C” Terminal. Bokas’ paintings are included in corporate and museum collections throughout the South. In addition, they have been displayed in numerous solo exhibitions. His career path includes nine years as senior art director for Sea World and 20 years senior art director for Tupperware. ARTIST’S STATEMENT: AN ARRAY OF ELEMENTS “Springtime 2020 is a mix-media collage. I wanted to incorporate many elements that are featured at the art festival. The iconic peacock is surrounded by paint brushes, an artist’s palette, roses from the garden, stained glass, a film strip, fabric and many other elements. The ‘Winter Park-type treatment’ also features some historical landmarks, including the Langford Hotel, the Colony Theater sign, Rollins College and the Scenic Boat Tour. I hope the viewer spends time looking at and finding different elements throughout the poster.”

LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT Talented Youngsters in the Arts Spotlight

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art programs of Orange County public and private schools since the first festival in 1960. The skillful and unique art created by these talented students will astonish you. The exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an inspirational teacher, artist and former member and president of the art festival board. The student displays are located across the railroad tracks opposite the stage. This year’s panel of judges for the Schools Exhibit includes Kevin Abbott, a fine artist who specializes in mid-century New York School-inspired paintings and sculpture; Belinda Glennon, a ceramics instructor and Young Artist Program manager at the Crealdé School of Art; and Marla E, whose unique sculptural paintings are on display in shows, galleries and private collections around the world. The winning work was presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation for its support and the many services provided related to the event. Preserving Winter Park’s Unique History

his year’s Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival poster embraces historic and iconic images of Winter Park — and so does the Winter Park History Museum, whose mission is to collect, preserve, promote and research the history of the city and the surrounding areas. Part of the Winter Park Historical Association, the museum is located at 200 West New England Avenue in the north end of the historic Farmers’ Market building. Wish You Were Here: The Hotels & Motels of Winter Park, is the current exhibition. It features a 1930’s hotel lobby where wealthy winter visitors enjoyed leisurely days of socializing and entertainment. Also featured is a display on the beloved Langford Hotel (1959-2000). Among the artifacts: the original Empire Room neon sign and piano from the hotel’s lounge. Orlando Avenue (U.S.17-92) tourist cottages, boarding houses and early motels round out the accommodations explored in this exhibition. “Our town is built on the foundation of luxury hotels,” explains Susan Skolfield, executive director. “In the 1880s, Winter Park founders needed to draw well- The Winter Park History Museum’s current exhibit revisits the city’s hotels heeled tourists to invest in Winter Park. Smooth Jazz All Stars: Quadruple the Fun

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Friday night concert has become a jazzy local tradition, as superb players showcase their own art form on the Central Park stage. This year will be quadruple the fun, with four headline acts known collectively as the Smooth Jazz All Stars. Music gets underway at 4 p.m., with the All Stars set to take the stage at 7:15 p.m. Get there early with lawn chairs and blankets to claim a prime location. The All Stars will showcase contemporary saxophonists Jeff Kashiwa and Jackiem Joyner. They’ll be joined by Steve Oliver, a chart-topping vocalist and guitarist, and Nicholas Cole, a jazz keyboardist whose playing reflects gospel and R&B influences.

JEFF KASHIWA

A Seattle native, Kashiwa knew he was destined to become a musician after being introduced to woodwinds in junior high school. He became known as one of the most compelling young saxophonists in contemporary jazz during his first year with The Rippingtons. Kashiwa left the group in 1999 to embark on a solo career, and subsequently released nine albums under his own name. He also appeared as a guest artist with many other performers and formed his own trio, The Sax Pack, in 2004. In 2006, Kashiwa reunited with The Rippingtons for their 20th Anniversary Tour, and continues to record and perform with the group as often as his schedule will allow.

JACKIEM JOYNER

After more than 12 years as a recording artist, contemporary saxophonist, author and music producer, Joyner continues to stand out with electrifying live performances and brilliant musical productions. As a performer, Joyner has appeared in more than 30 countries and has shared stages with the likes of Angela Bofill, the late George Duke, Marcus Miller, Keiko Matsui, Donnie McClurkin, Najee, Kirk Whalum, Peter White and many others. Joyner has notched several hits on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. The singles “I’m Waiting for You” (2009) and “Take Me There” (2010) reached No. 1.

STEVE OLIVER

With a career spanning more than 20 years, Oliver’s music is still heard daily on contemporary jazz radio around the world. As a first-call producer and writer for many artists in the genre, his impact continues. A former touring member of the veteran jazz group Acoustic Alchemy, Oliver has co-written and produced tracks with Grammy-winning pianist Omar Akram and many smooth jazz notables such as Brian Simpson, Paul Taylor and Tom Schuman. He has placed 13 hit singles on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz chart. His 2010 single “Fun in the Sun” held the No. 1 position for eight weeks.

NICHOLAS COLE

Cole, a native of North Carolina, began playing piano and organ in church at the age of 4. That’s why his current music seamlessly combines secular and spiritual influences. Among his favorite musicians are smooth jazz stars Brian Culbertson, Peter White and Brian Simpson as well as gospel greats Fred Hammond, Kirk Franklin, Richard Smallwood, Walter Hawkins and Yolanda Adams. “God gave me the gift to play, so naturally I write and play music that comes from a very spiritual place, as if it’s put on my heart and I’m given the opportunity to express it,” says Cole. “There’s a deep connection between jazz and gospel.” 28 61ST WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

ENTERTAINMENT O-SKY: TALENTED TEEN SET FOR A BIG CAREER

O-Sky is a 17-year-old singer-songwriter from Orlando who has loved performing for practically her entire life. At age 8, she started taking guitar lessons, and at age 9 she started writing her first EP, which she released the following year. She has performed at a variety of venues, including the Bluebird Café in Nashville; The Broadmoor in Colorado; and B.B. King’s Blues Club and House of Blues in Orlando. O-Sky will release her first full album, Light of Night, in the coming months. When she’s not creating music, she enjoys taking improv classes at Sak Comedy Lab and creating video games. O-Sky performs Friday at 4:30 p.m.

BIG BAND BACH: IT’S CLASSICALLY COOL

In celebration of the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park’s 85th Anniversary, the organization will present the works of J.S. Bach with a Big Band vibe to Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival audiences. “If Bach were alive today, I’m convinced that he would be a jazz musician given that he was well known for his extraordinary ability to improvise,” notes Dr. John V. Sinclair, artistic airector and conductor of the Bach Festival Society. Sinclair is also chair of the Department of Music at Rollins College. The Big Band Bach program will feature several of Bach’s most-recognized melodies, including “Jesu,” “Joy of Man’s Desiring” and other selections from his cantatas. The Brandenburg orchestral suites, the “B minor Mass,” and the “Magnificat” have also been arranged for a traditional big band sound. Sinclair, along with jazz artist Chuck Archard, an artist in residence at Rollins, has worked with local musicians to develop new charts for this historic music — with a fun and fabulous twist. Big Band Bach performs Sunday at 3 p.m.

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation is focused on supporting community appreciation of the arts, providing programs that encourage creativity in children and funding college scholarships. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop and Performing Arts at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. Creative Fun for Kids! And Best of All, It’s Free

ey kids! Join the fun and create a unique piece of artwork that you can take home and share with your family and friends. The Children’s Workshop is open each day of the festival, Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and it’s free. The activities are located on the west side of the railroad tracks just north of Morse Boulevard near the post office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. Easel painting is always popular, with more than 1,000 children and families participating each year. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge, outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for 30-plus years. Easel painting hours are from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, museums and other community partners have exciting hands-on arts and crafts activities on all three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 

Celebrate Spring at the Morse

he Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art’s festivities continue throughout the months of March and April with open house events. A three-day open house, held in conjunction with the annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, provides all visitors with free admission to the galleries during the festival. As is tradition, the Morse will offer free admission on Easter weekend April 10 through April 12, with live music and a tour set for Good Friday. Through April 24, the Morse presents live music from 5 to 8 p.m. during its free Friday nights. In addition to live music, these evenings include guided tours of the exhibition Louis Comfort Tiffany’s Laurelton Hall at 7 p.m. The Friday, April 17 programming also includes a family tour of selected galleries at 5:15 p.m. and a 6 p.m. art talk on the fundamentals of conservation with a free take-home art activity for participants. The Morse Museum is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany. New exhibitions include Iridescence—A Celebration, Rare and Remarkable—Art Pottery of Louis Comfort Tiffany, and Stories from the Archives—Louis Comfort Tiffany and His Studios. Through April, museum hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday; 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday; and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Regular admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $1 for students and free for children younger than 12. Admission is free from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays, November through April. EMERGING ARTISTS Let’s Meet This Year’s Festival Up-and-Comers

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program was founded in 1977 to encourage new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost to selectees. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as the festival’s other participants, will have the opportunity to make sales and receive feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists are not eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience are invaluable. This year, three artists were selected to participate:

Stephanie DeGuglimo

West Palm Beach DeGuglimo works with papier-mâché sculpture, a technique she has pursued for more than 50 years. Over time, she has developed and experimented with many different techniques to discover innovative ways to make papiermâché a fine craft. Most of her work has been commissioned by decorators and featured in decorator showrooms, antique shops and department store windows in Manhattan. She says that papier-mâché is a true shape shifter; from tree to paper, then paper to pulp, then pulp back to form. S.E. GILCHRIST

Livingston, Texas Several years ago, Gilchrist traded traditional life for a nomadic one. After selling her home and most of her belongings, she moved into a motor home and began traveling throughout North America. This desire for a minimalist life was likely born from her love of hard-edge and geometric abstraction. Artists such as Piet Mondrian, Ilya Bolotowsky, Felrath Hines, Carmen Herrera and Frederick Hammersley influenced her. Gilchrist’s creations mirror her lifestyle: Both are about simplicity and reduction. Lines and the shapes begin her work, while the interaction of colors completes it. Gilchrist, who learned the art of stitching during the first decade of her life, found it easier to apply her colors with paint or ink than thread. Still, she always returned to stitching. The meditative quality of patience required in completing these works inspires her to continue exploring this medium.

NATALIA HUBBARD

Miami, Florida Natalia Hubbard was born in California and raised in both Miami and Long Beach. She studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration. After relocating to Miami and working as a graphic designer, the paintbrush fell by the wayside. However, on a fishing trip in the Everglades with her husband, she felt tugged between catching bass and painting the habitat. Shortly thereafter, she picked up the paintbrush again. “I love focusing on the everyday, accentuating its vibrancy by picking out its color, texture, and pattern,” Hubbard says. As for the Everglades, her goal is to let people bring its timeless beauty into the home. Natalia Hubbard
