CO-PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME

A Year of Many T

Firsts

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is a spring tradition for many, but for us, it’s a family affair. As the daughter of a longtime board member, the festival has been a part of my family for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I remember taking a hammer and riding my bike to Park Avenue with my mom to help set up screens in the Schools Exhibit ahead of the festival. At the time, neither of us would’ve imagined that over 20 years later we would become co-presidents of the festival’s board of directors. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has a long history of bringing talented artists and art lovers together in beautiful Central Park. Since our start in 1960, a dedicated, all-volunteer board has worked year-round to deliver what has become one of the nation’s most prestigious outdoor art festivals. After 61 years, we thought we’d seen it all. However, 2020 was full of unprecedented events — including the first-ever cancellation of the festival. It was a difficult decision, but our board felt we needed to prioritize the health and safety of all artists and attendees. That said, we’re thrilled to be back in the park and welcome you to the 62nd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival! 2020 may have been the first time the festival was canceled, but 2021 is poised to be a year of many “firsts” as well. In March, we held our first-ever Virtual Festival, which featured 110 artists, 87 K-12 schools and 12 museums and learning centers. Now, we invite you to be a part of another “first” for the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival — our first (and likely only) May Festival. Finally, we’d like to thank the City of Winter Park — including 6 62ND WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

the Parks & Recreation, Police, and Fire-Rescue Departments — whose staffs have gone above and beyond to help us create a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience for artists and attendees alike. Thank you to all of our volunteers, sponsors and patrons whose continued support and participation are key to the success of this event. And a special thank you to the Winter Park community for its ongoing patience, enthusiasm and encouragement. As you make your way around the park, we invite you to take a moment to speak with the artists, learn about their process and inspiration, and perhaps purchase a piece of their artwork. Please enjoy your time here and we hope that you will join us again next year! Amelia Storer and Laura Fogleman, Co-Presidents The 62nd Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival

FESTIVAL AT A GL ANCE WHERE: Central Park and along Park Avenue in Winter Park WHEN: May 14, 15 and 16, 2021 • HOURS: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday For more information, call 407-644-7207 or visit wpsaf.org. ABOUT THE FESTIVAL

The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws up to 350,000 visitors each year. More than 1,100 artists from around the world applied for this year’s event. An independent panel of three judges selected the artists exhibiting their works. The festival consistently ranks among the top juried fine-art festivals in the country. National accolades include the No. 3 ranking in Art Fair Source Book’s “Fine Art Events,” the No. 6 ranking in Art Fair Calendar’s “2019 Best Art Fairs,” the No. 1 ranking in Art Fair Calendar’s “Best Southern Art Fairs” and the No. 6 ranking in Sunshine Artist Magazine’s “Top 100.” For the first time since it began in 1960, the festival was canceled in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic was spreading across the nation. A year later, the 2021 festival — originally scheduled for March 19, 20 and 21 — was postponed until May 14, 15 and 16, allowing more time for the public to become vaccinated and creating a safer environment for the outdoor event.

CATEGORIES

The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: clay, digital art, drawings and pastels, fiber, glass, graphics and printmaking, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media-2D, mixed media-3D, painting, photography, sculpture, watercolor, and wood as well as an Emerging Artists category.

AWARDS

Artists compete for 63 awards totaling $74,500. The Best of Show purchase award was increased in 2019 to $12,000. The festival donates the winning work to the City of Winter Park, and all are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. A $5,000 “Art of Philanthropy” Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, while a $2,500 “Distinguished Work of Art” Award is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

Traditionally the festival features a popular Friday night concert and music throughout the festival’s three-day run at the stage in north Central Park. This year, the Friday night concert — a usually crowded sit-down event — has been can-

celed due to COVID-19 guidelines about social distancing. There’ll be some light entertainment throughout the weekend at various locations throughout the park.

MERCHANDISE

Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival T-shirts and other memorabilia are available at three merchandise sales tents. The tents are located at the south entrance (Park and New England avenues), at the center intersection (Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue) and at the north entrance (Park and Garfield avenues). Posters will be sold at the three merchandise tents, while a vintage poster merchandise tent will be located across the mulch path next to the festival headquarters at Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. Vintage T-shirts will be on sale on Morse Boulevard near the beer garden. This year’s vibrant and whimsical poster is a mixed-media collage called Flamingos and Friends Exploring Winter Park by popular local artist Victor Bokas. After the festival is over, you can still purchase this year’s poster — and past posters — by visiting the festival’s website at wpsaf.org.

CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP

Due to COVID-19, and to provide room for social distancing for the artists’ booths, there’ll be no easel painting at the 2021 festival. The Children’s Workshop was moved to the Virtual Festival, which was held March 15 through 31. Twelve museums and learning centers participated with online art demonstrations and project kits that could be picked up at the Central Park stage on Saturday, March 15. These demonstrations will still be available online during the live festival and can be accessed through wpsaf.org.

LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT

The live Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit was also canceled for the 2021 festival. It, too, was moved to the Virtual Festival in March. The amazing artwork of students from 87 Orange County public and private schools was on display, and works by middle schoolers and high schoolers were judged for awards. The winners list and the student entries can still be viewed by visiting the Virtual Festival, accessible through wpsaf.org. The site was created on the Eventeny platform.

COMPLIMENTARY BIKE CORRAL

Ride your bike to the festival and park it at the free Bike Corral provided by the Winter Park Pedestrian and Bicycle Advisory Board. The corral is located off Morse Boulevard across the street from the Amtrak Station parking lot.

No animals are allowed (except certified service animals) in Central Park or on Park Avenue between New England and Canton Avenues during festival hours, per a City of Winter Park Ordinance. Visitors are asked to follow current COVID-19 CDC guidelines. Please wear a mask, keep your distance from others, avoid standing in crowded areas and wash your hands frequently. Hand-washing stations and sanitizer will be available throughout the park. 10 62ND WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

JUDGES Top-Notch Judges Bring International Expertise

J

udges for the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, who come from across the country, are selected annually for their in-depth knowledge and experience in multiple art media. Last October, they reviewed digital images from all festival applicants to select the exhibiting artists. Other artists were placed on wait lists. During the festival, the three-judge panel will review each booth to determine which artists will be eligible for awards. After a booth is selected, the artist will select one piece that best represents his or her entire body of work. Winners are determined by the judges on Saturday.

JOHN W. KINKADE

Loveland, Colorado Kinkade, founder and executive director of the National Sculptors’ Guild at Columbine Gallery and principal/co-owner of JK Designs, has worked with more than 200 artists and countless municipalities on 500-plus major public sculpture placements across the U.S. since 1992. “With each placement, our family grows as art truly connects,” says Kinkade. “The people I have been fortunate to work with — artists, clients, commissioners and so forth — become close friends. I am doing what I love, and hope 18 62ND WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

it shows in the designs and placements we create.” He has also consulted on numerous master plans for public and private outdoor sculpture gardens, including those in Little Rock, Arkansas; Southlake, Texas; Louisville, Colorado; Skagway, Alaska; and Cerritos, California. He was named one of the nation’s 40 Most Prominent People in the Arts by Southwest Art Magazine in 2011. In addition to traveling for installations and working with the gallery and the guild, Kinkade enjoys chairing the Annual Rotary Art Scholarship and Governor’s Art Show, among other ventures through the Rotary Club of Thompson Valley, Colorado. Interestingly, Kinkade was a practicing attorney for 20 years — from 1971 to 1991 — specializing in, among other areas, construction, probate and estate planning.

BRENT KEE YOUNG

Cleveland, Ohio Young, a glass artist and professor emeritus at the Cleveland Institute of Art, has been recognized by scores of museums, galleries, colleges and universities throughout the U.S. and Asia. In 2006, for example, the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s Renwick Gallery acquired its second piece by Young for its permanent collection. Amphora … Save, from Young’s Matrix Series, is a construction of intricate and technically complex works created by flameworking borosilicate glass rods into layers of glass webs. In 2010, Young’s work was selected for New Glass Review 31, the annual survey of contemporary glass sponsored by the Corning Museum of Glass. In 2011, he was selected as a Creative Workforce Fellow, a program supported by the Cuyahoga County Community Partnership for Arts and Culture. In 2012, his work was published in 50 Years of Studio Glass — a selection of 50 top glass artists worldwide. In 2018, numerous works in Young’s Matrix Series were acquired by the Imagine Museum of St. Petersburg (Florida). In 1990, Young was selected as head of glass at Aichi University of Education in Kariya, Japan, where he was responsible for establishing the studio, designing and implementing the curriculum, and teaching the first glass program at a national university in Japan. n

CHRIS DAHLQUIST

Kansas City, Missouri Dahlquist learned to use a camera and darkroom around the same time she was learning to ride a bicycle and write in cursive. Originally from Fort Worth, Texas, she wrote her first artist statement as a child, in phonetic Texan, claiming for herself a life of travel and “tacking pitchers.” She has wielded a camera ever since. After spending her early career in commercial photography and film, Dahlquist revisited her childhood proclamation. Since 1998, she has shown her mixed media photography nationwide — from Miami to Seattle and just about everywhere else in between. Dahlquist has combined her wanderlust and her love of historic photographic processes with contemporary technology to create artwork that has won many awards and is found in hundreds of private and public collections. In addition to pursuing photography, Dahlquist is a facilitator for Artist Inc., a professional development program for artists. She travels nationally, speaking and conducting workshops on art-related business topics. In 2015, Dahlquist worked with the City of Kansas City and the Kansas City Economic Development Corporation to develop a microloan program for artists. She has received several prestigious grants and is cofounder and former owner of Locust Factory LLC, a collaborative studio and gallery. She is represented by Sager Braudis Gallery in Columbia, Missouri.

POSTER ARTIST Vibrant Colors, Tropical Icons and

V

Whimsy

ictor Bokas grew up against a backdrop of palm trees, beautiful beaches and sunbathers in the Florida Panhandle. Those influences surface in his paintings through vibrant colors, tropical icons and a good measure of whimsy. In 1987, life’s highway brought Bokas to Central Florida, where sun, fun and exuberant energy infused his work. In many of his pieces, Bokas pays homage to his Greek heritage. A self-described “collector of kitsch,” his studio is filled with vintage flea market finds. His collection is a source of inspiration, and items from it are often incorporated into his works. In Bokas’ paintings, grids, squares and other graphic design elements lend structure and direction. No doubt his long career as a graphic designer brings a sense of order to his hyper-imaginative settings.

Victor Bokas

ARTIST’S STATEMENT:

FLAMINGOS AND FRIENDS EXPLORING WINTER PARK The artist’s accomplishments are many, including the design of a 15-by-85-foot mosaic floor (pictured above), dubbed Florida Vacation, for Orlando International Airport’s “A” Terminal. The work was installed by Italian masters of natural stone and glazed enamel. Most recently, he designed a wall installation for Orlando International Airport’s “C” Terminal. Bokas’ paintings are included in corporate and museum collections throughout the South. In addition, they have been displayed in numerous solo exhibitions. His career path includes nine years as senior art director for Sea World and 20 years as senior art director for Tupperware. “This year’s poster is a mixed-media digital collage made up of over 25 images. I wanted the poster to be fun, colorful and whimsical. It’s also a companion poster to last year’s poster. The two work great together. The poster brings together Winter Park and art festival elements such as the canals, the Memorial Fountain and Rose Garden in Central Park, and of course, peacocks. The focus is a colorful flamingo holding an ornate gold frame with a surreal image of the peacock lady on top of a column singing, holding an artist’s palette with the fountain in the background. Have fun exploring all elements.”

LEON THEODORE SCHOOLS EXHIBIT Youngsters Spotlighted in 2021 Virtual Festival

T

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has proudly showcased the artists and art programs of Orange County public and private schools since the first festival in 1960. In 2021, the exhibit was held virtually March 15-31 to make more space at the in-person festival for social distancing and to spread out artists’ booths during the COVID-19 pandemic. The schools exhibit is named in memory of Leon Theodore, an inspirational teacher, artist and former member and president of the art festival board. The judges for the schools exhibit were Kevin Abbott, a fine artist who specializes in midcentury New York School-inspired paintings and sculpture, and Belinda Glennon, a ceramics instructor and Young Artist Program manager at the Crealdé School of Art. A special thank you goes to the sponsors who support this exhibit, including the Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation, Art Systems of Florida, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, Orange County Public Schools and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation. n

n 1969, an annual tradition was started when the Best of

Show work of art was purchased by the festival committee for $250. The winning work was presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation for its support and the many services provided related to the event.

The purchase award amount has steadily increased over the years, and last year the purchase price increased from $10,000 to $12,000. In 1977, the city designated the Winter Park Public Library as the repository for this amazing collection, making it available for the public to enjoy. he 2020 and 2021 festival posters embrace historic and iconic images of Winter Park — and so does the Winter Park History Museum, whose mission is to collect, preserve, promote and research the history of the city and the surrounding areas. Part of the Winter Park Historical Association, the museum is located at 200 West New England Avenue in the north end of the historic Farmers’ Market building. The museum’s next exhibition, Rollins: Florida’s First College, The Early Years — 1885-1935, opens June 17 and will guide visitors through the college’s first decades — a period of incredible struggles and triumphs for what is today one of the nation’s top private liberal arts colleges. The exhibition will provide visitors with an interactive experience of college life during this 50-year span. It will include re-creations, including a 1930s dormitory room, a classroom configured for President Hamilton Holt’s innovative “conference plan,” and a student union displaying college sports, fads, trends and fashions. There will also be a children’s playroom designed as a turn-ofthe-century classroom with period wooden desks, books and toys. Admission is free. ENTERTAINMENT Friday Night Concert Eyes 2022 Comeback

T

raditionally the Friday night concert at the festival is a highly anticipated springtime event in Central Florida, attracting enthusiastic attendees from around the state and beyond. Locals show up at daybreak on Friday morning to claim a space, spread out their blankets and set up their lawn chairs in front of the stage in north Central Park. More than just a concert, the event feels like a neighborhood party with elaborate spreads of food and drink. However, due to COVID-19 and concerns about social distancing, the 62nd festival will skip the Friday night concert and offer scaled-back performances on the stage throughout Attendees always staked the three-day event. The concert, which generally focused on jazz artists, gained statewide notice in the 1980s out their places early for and 1990s when such greats as Herbie Mann, Dave Brubeck, Al Hirt, Ramsey Lewis, The the festival’s Friday night concerts. Rippingtons and Grover Washington, Jr. were among the headliners. During that time, WLOQ, the local jazz station, partnered with the festival to bring these big-name artists to Winter Park. WLOQ went off the air in 2012, and funding for the concerts decreased without their industry connections and advertising support. But the excitement continued. The festival took over the booking of talent and sponsorships with the help of board member Wayne Osley of Oz Media, who continued to secure outstanding, crowd-pleasing headliners. Besides the main concert, the entire weekend was filled with popular local groups and talented young entertainers along with appearances by some of Central Florida’s finest orchestras and ensemble groups. Well, there’s always next year. We look forward to you joining us again in 2022 when the tradition of great Friday night concerts and a weekend full of wonderful music and entertainment returns. n

VIRTUAL FESTIVAL

T

Moving Online: Challenging and Rewarding

hroughout its history, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has been held in March. But in 2021, the live event was postponed until May due to COVID-19 and CDC guidance regarding large gatherings. But that doesn’t mean there was no festival in March — it simply moved online with its first ever Virtual Festival. Even during May’s outdoor event, some of the festival’s traditional elements have been moved online to allow more room in Central Park for spacing artists’ booths and for attendees to observe social distancing. After reviewing online platform options, the all-volunteer festival committee chose Eventeny, a company increasingly being used by other festivals to create an online experience while in-person events were being curtailed. It was a challenge for the committee, the artists, the schools and the museums to learn and use this new technology, but it was rewarding to be able to bring the essence of the festival to the community in March. The Virtual Festival included a Marketplace for artists, who displayed their art for sale and could include videos showing their studios and processes as well as conduct

live chats with customers. A virtual scavenger hunt was held to encourage viewers to look through all the artists’ entries, with prizes that included festival posters and works donated by the artists. Twelve area museums and learning centers participated in the Children’s Workshop, which featured online, step-by-step project demonstrations. Corresponding take-home craft kits were available for pickup in Central Park on March 20. The online Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit featured the best student artwork from 89 Orange County public and private schools. The works were judged for awards by two local artists, Kevin Abbott and Belinda Glennon. One benefit of the virtual exhibit was the ability to share the works on display with long-distance relatives and friends. A virtual poster unveiling, hosted by co-presidents Laura Fogleman and Amelia Storer along with the poster artist Victor Bokas, kicked off the Virtual Festival on March 15 and remained open until March 31. Curious to see what an online art festival looks like? For access to the Virtual Festival during the live event, visit the website at wpsaf.org. n

THE FOUNDATION A Mission of Art Appreciation and Education

T

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation is focused on supporting community appreciation of the arts, providing programs that encourage creativity in children and funding college scholarships. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop, and Performing Arts at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida. Begun in 2008, the foundation — which is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt entity — has a continuing mission to enhance art appreciation, art education and community spirit. Due to the COVID-19 virus, the children’s activities were reimagined as a Virtual Festival in This year, the foundation 2021, held March 15-31. This opened additional space in Central Park so the festival could produced an art festival-themed space out artists’ booths at May’s live event, while still providing a platform to display the juried coloring book. student artwork and hands-on art projects directed virtually by the participating museums and learning centers. As part of the children’s activities, craft kits were given out in Central Park on March 20. Also shared with youngsters was a Winter Park-themed coloring book produced by the foundation that features familiar scenes from around the city. The foundation received funding in 2020 from the Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation, the Pocket Program, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and individual donations. If you’d like to donate or find out more, please contact the foundation at P.O. Box 597, Winter Park, Florida, 32790. You may also send an email to wpsaf@wpsaf.org or call 407-644-7207. n

CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP This Year, Creative Fun for Kids Goes Virtual

A

long history of encouraging children’s creativity at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival was altered in scope for 2021. But the festival continued to reach out to Central Florida children in a new way — virtually. Due to concerns related to COVID-19 and to allow more space for social distancing, the festival eliminated the Children’s Workshop and in-person easel painting this year. But the tradition of creativity continued. Twelve local museums and learning centers participated in the Virtual Festival, which was held March 15 through March 31 and featured hands-on projects for kids. Each participant was provided how-to instructions that were available on-line and packaged project kits that were distributed at the stage in Central Park on March 20. It was a tremendous success, as thousands of kits were distributed. A special thanks to the Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation for supporting the Children’s Workshop. And thanks to the museums that participated in this virtual format. n

MORSE MUSEUM Transition from Spring to Summer at the Morse

T

he Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933). These works include the chapel interior he designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago as well as surviving art and architectural elements from Laurelton Hall, his grand Long Island estate. Two new spring shows are now on view. The exhibit Watercolors from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s “Little Arcadia” features watercolor studies by Alice C. Gouvy (1863-1924) and Lillian A. Palmié (1873-1944), Tiffany designers who were selected to work in an idyllic workshop, often somewhat enviously referred to as “little Arcadia.” The vignette Chinese Blue and White Porcelain exhibits precious and still avidly collected 18th- and 19th-century Chinese porcelain drawn from a recent donation to the Morse Museum by the Abberger family of the collection of lifelong Orlando residents Dr. Benjamin L. Abberger Jr. and Nancy Hardy Abberger. The museum is located at 445 North Park Avenue. Throughout May, hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday. Regular admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $1 for students and free for children younger than age 12. For more this summer, the museum invites everyone to enjoy its free online offerings, which will be uploaded on Wednesday, July 7. Two summer programs for families — designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents or guardians — focus on interior design and decoration during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Each program may be found on the museum’s “Create and Explore” page at morsemuseum.org/create-explore. For those who would like to continue to visit the museum virtually, the Morse offers many opportunities, including online activities, videos, and an audio tour. The Morse Museum is owned and operated by the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation and receives additional support from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. It receives no public funds. n At the Morse, you’ll see a collection of Tiffany glass masterpieces. Tiffany’s breathtaking daffodil window (left) is part of the museum’s collection. Among the current exhibitions (below) is Watercolors from Louis Comfort Tiffany’s “Little Arcadia.”

EMERGING ARTISTS Let’s Meet This Year’s Festival Up-and-Comers

T

he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program was founded in 1977 to encourage new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost to selectees. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as the festival’s other participants, will have the opportunity to make sales and receive feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists are not eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience are invaluable. This year, three artists were selected to participate:

STEPHANIE DEGUGLIMO

Stephanie DeGuglimo

West Palm Beach DeGuglimo works with papier-mâché sculpture, a technique she has pursued for more than 50 years. Over time, she has developed and experimented with many different techniques to discover innovative ways to make papiermâché a fine craft. Most of her work has been commissioned by decorators and featured in decorator showrooms, antique shops and department store windows in Manhattan. She says that papier-mâché is a true shape shifter; from tree to paper, then paper to pulp, then pulp back to form. It’s not only strong, durable and recycled — it’s also a refined craft with endless possibilities to reinvent itself. sadeguglimo@yahoo.com • Booth Number 212

S.E. GILCHRIST

Livingston, Texas Several years ago, Gilchrist traded traditional life for a nomadic one. After selling her home and most of her belongings, she moved into a motor home and began traveling throughout North America. This desire for a minimalist life was likely born from her love of hard-edge and geometric abstraction. Artists such as Piet Mondrian, Ilya Bolotowsky, Felrath Hines, Carmen Herrera and Frederick Hammersley influenced her. Gilchrist’s creations mirror her lifestyle: Both are about simplicity and reduction. Lines and the shapes begin her work, while the interaction of colors completes it. Gilchrist, who learned the art of stitching during the first decade of her life, found it easier to apply her colors with paint or ink than thread. Still, she always returned to stitching. The meditative quality of patience required in completing these works inspires her to continue exploring this medium.

S.E. Gilchrist

segilchrist@outlook.com • Booth Number 214

NATALIA HUBBARD

Miami, Florida Natalia Hubbard was born in California and raised in both Miami and Long Beach. She studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and graduated in 2010 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in illustration. After relocating to Miami and working as a graphic designer, the paintbrush fell by the wayside. However, on a fishing trip in the Everglades with her husband, she felt tugged between catching bass and painting the habitat. Shortly thereafter, she picked up the paintbrush again. “I love focusing on the everyday, accentuating its vibrancy by picking out its color, texture and pattern,” Hubbard says. As for the Everglades, her goal is to let people bring its timeless beauty into the home. Natalia Hubbard

54 62ND WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

IN MEMORIAM BE T T Y BAY A longtime Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board member and past president, Betty Bay served many roles during her 34 years of involvement and made many lasting friendships with other members. After retiring from the board of directors, she remained active as a sustaining member. She was a highly regarded art teacher at the Maitland Art Center for years and was well known in the local arts community for her beautiful paintings. She worked tirelessly on the merchandise committee and would usually sell more posters and T-shirts each year than all the rest of the volunteers combined. Her efforts also helped keep the books balanced every year.

C AROLYN BIRD Carolyn Bird was a beloved 41-year active member and a leader on the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board of directors. Some of her many roles included secretary, treasurer and historian. She is remembered most as a detail-oriented contributor who reviewed all information to be disbursed for accuracy and consistency, including every document from the bylaws to the official festival program. She was a true advocate for children’s activities and most recently put her exceptional organizational efforts behind enhancing the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit. Her enthusiastic mentoring of new members and creative impact on the board will be missed.

DOUG KERR A graduate of Rollins College and a longtime resident of Winter Park, Doug Kerr served on the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Board of Directors for 10 years and was president for one term. He enlisted his wife, Elaine, to assist him in the many duties of the office, and as a team they enriched the organization and the annual show in 2001. He remained active as a sustaining member and a patron of the festival until his death in 2020.
