CO-PRESIDENTS’ WELCOME
L ife is Short
but Art Lives On
W
e’re thrilled to be back for the 63rd annual Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The festival is a time to appreciate art and the people who create it, bringing artists from around the country to our community to showcase their talents. What makes art so special? What makes this event a tradition worth continuing year after year? Art is a beauty that reaches us all differently, with the power to transcend the ordinary and give us joy and gratitude anew. We could all use a little more of that — particularly now! In Winter Park, we’ve always found a way to celebrate what art represents. As co-presidents of this year’s festival, we’re thrilled to welcome you back. We love this festival because it not only gives us that piece of beauty and transcendence, it also brings us together and shares such special artists with the community. And this wouldn’t be an art festival without music! As part of our opening act, we had an incredible jazz concert headlined by Eric Darius on Saturday night, March 12. We couldn’t think of a better way to kick off the event. None of this would be possible without your help and support. We have a tremendous volunteer board of directors who make this event happen. We currently have 40 board members who spend countless hours to deliver this festival to you. Thank you for making this event a reality! We also must thank the Patrons who give generously to support the artists in our show as well as our sponsors, 6 63RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
festival volunteers and active sustaining board members, who provide hours of service to support this massive effort. In addition, we have our wonderful city officials, employees and officers who lend a huge hand to securing and organizing. However you partake, we hope this year that you appreciate all art has to offer, and the community that drives it. The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. The festival debuted in March 1960 as a community project to bring local artists and art lovers together. It’s produced by an all-volunteer board and draws up to 250,000 visitors each year. Close to 900 artists from around the world applied for this year’s event. An independent panel of three judges selected the artists who will exhibit their works. The event consistently ranks among the top juried fine-art festivals in the country. National accolades include No. 3 in Art Fair SourceBook’s 2020 festival rankings and No. 6 in Sunshine Artist’s Top 200 from 2010-2020, a 10-year ranking of the nation’s most profitable art shows. In ArtFairCalendar’s list of Best Art Fairs, the festival ranks No. 1 in the South and No. 6 in the nation.
CATEGORIES
The festival features a wide variety of fine arts and crafts in the following categories: clay, digital art, drawings and pastels, fiber, glass, graphics and printmaking, jewelry, leather, metal, mixed media-2D, mixed media-3D, painting, photography, sculpture, watercolor and wood as well as an Emerging Artists category.
AWARDS
Artists compete for 63 awards totaling $74,500. In 2019, the Best of Show purchase award was increased to $12,000. A $5,000 “Art of Philanthropy” Purchase Award is sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, while a $2,500 “Distinguished Work of Art” Award is presented through the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art. There are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT
New this year, the traditional Friday Night Concert was moved to the Saturday before the festival, March 12, and kicked off festival week. The Saturday Night Concert featured chart topping jazz saxophonist Eric Darius as the
headliner, along with world-famous New York guitarist JJ Sansaverino and acclaimed singer/songwriter Rebecca Jade. Additionally, during the three days of the festival there’ll be soft, contemporary live music on the stage in north Central Park.
MERCHANDISE
Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival T-shirts and other memorabilia are available at three merchandise sales tents. The tents are located at the south entrance (Park and New England avenues), at the center intersection (Morse Boulevard and Park Avenue), and at the north entrance (Park and Garfield avenues). Posters will be for sale at the three merchandise tents and at the vintage poster tent, located across the mulch path next to festival headquarters at Park Avenue and Morse Boulevard. The 2022 poster, created by popular local artist Tom Sadler, features a beautiful festival street scene framed to look like a postage stamp. Notecards and postcards are also available.
CHILDREN’S WORKSHOP
Youngsters can create their own artwork at the Children’s Workshop. Easel painting is extremely popular, and local art centers and museums feature a variety of fun, hands-on art activities for children. Admission is free and participants may take home their artistic creations. Children’s Workshop hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Easel painting is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

JUDGES Top-Notch Judges Bring International Expertise
I
ndependent judges for the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, who come from across the country, are selected for their in-depth knowledge of and experience in multiple art media. In October, they reviewed digital images from all applicants to select the festival’s artists and wait-list artists. During the festival, the same panel reviews the work of the exhibitors to determine those considered eligible for awards. Awards are presented solely at the discretion of the judges.
MICHAEL GAINES
Hannibal, Missouri
Gaines considers himself an accidental arts administrator. Returning to Missouri after living abroad, he entered the art world through a nonprofit leadership position in his hometown of historic Bethel, Missouri, where his programming experience centered upon folk art and traditions. This ignited a passion in Gaines for what the arts add to communities and how communities can thrive when the arts are at their core. At first, Gaines thought the opportunity to move to “America’s Hometown” of Hannibal, Missouri, was a stepping stone — but he has been executive director of the Hannibal Arts Council since 1993 and hasn’t looked back. Since 2005, he has served as executive director of the Missouri Association of Community Arts Agencies. And he proudly serves as board advisor for the Missouri Artisans Association, also known as Best of Missouri Hands. Gaines is an avid art collector with more than 300 2-D and 200 3-D works in his collection.
LAWRENCE W. OLIVERSON
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Oliverson has an extensive background in the world of art festivals and the arts. As an exhibitor, he is an internationally active artist whose fine-art medium is photography. By invitation, he has traveled three times to Cuba to work with the Cuban photographic community. He also assisted International Arts & Crafts Promotions, the nonprofit producer of the first Yokohama International Open-Air Art Fair. He was keynote speaker at the first event and has held three 16 63RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
exhibitions in Japan. As director of the Global Artist Exchange, Oliverson arranged for five Chinese artists to exhibit at the Lakefront Festival of Arts at the Milwaukee Art Museum. He has been an invited speaker at the International Festival and Events Association. He has served on the exhibition committee and the board of trustees at the Milwaukee Art Museum, and well as president of the museum’s Friends of Art and co-chair of its Lakefront Festival of Arts. As president of the National Association of Independent Artists, he served as an advocate for the needs of artists, organized and presided over numerous director conferences and was instrumental in the development of ZAPP, the leading on-line application system used by art events nationwide. He has been an advisor and consultant to numerous events on various aspects of show production.
JENNIFER PERLOW
Denver, Colorado
Perlow has 20 years of experience in the arts — most recently through PS Gallery, H&P Consultants and Lewis Graham Art Consultants. She’s now founding Principal of PS Art Consulting, where she helps clients bring their spaces to life by finding art for them. Through her passion for the arts, Perlow has built a national network of artists through which she can find whatever her clients are seeking to create exceptional spaces. Her degree in psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia helps her to develop trusting relationships with both artists and clients. Perlow is a dedicated advocate for the arts and has served on numerous art-related boards. She has juried various national festivals and shows over the last 20 years, including Madeley National Juried Show, Des Moines Art Festival, Sausalito Art Festival, Western Spirit Art Show, St. Louis Art Festival and the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. n

POSTER ARTIST
L ight, Color, Mood
Poster artist Tom Sadler’s work is inspired by Florida’s natural beauty.
Tom Sadler
S
ince moving to Orlando in 1983, Huntsville, Alabama, native Tom Sadler has dedicated his artistic efforts toward capturing the light, color and mood of distinctive local landscapes. The intense light — combined with natural beauty of the many lakes, rivers and parks of the area — provides a never-ending source of inspiration, he says. Sadler’s paintings come to life as a celebration of the beauty found in nature — sometimes exuberant, other times more subtle. With a BFA from Auburn University, Sadler’s art education also includes the study of oil painting with instructor Jack Dempsey at the University of Alabama Huntsville. He later attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
18 63RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
Since then, he has studied the work of a variety of artists who have, in one way or another, influenced his work. Sadler rarely isn’t painting and believes that “the door is just an opening to the world” that reveals potential subjects for his brush. Sadler works in oils because of their inherent versatility and permanence. He uses consistencies of paint that range from very transparent to very opaque, depending upon the subject, the setting and the season. He is especially drawn to scenes containing water. A senior faculty member at Crealdé School of Art, Sadler also does portrait commissions. His portrait of John McKay, president of the Florida Senate in 2001 and 2002, hangs in Tallahassee. To see more of Sadler’s work, visit tomsadler.com. n

BEST OF SHOW COLLECTION MOVES TO NEW LIBRARY In 1969, an annual tradition was started when the Best of Show work of art was purchased by the festival committee for $750 and presented to the City of Winter Park as an expression of appreciation for their support and the many services provided. The purchase award amount has steadily increased over the years to $12,000. In 1977, the city designated the Winter Park Public Library as the repository for this amazing collection, making it available for the public to enjoy. Today, with the move to the new Library and Events Center, the majority of the Best of Show Collection is still on display. The remaining pieces will be on permanent display in the near future. An online guide will be available soon through the library’s website.

ENTERTAINMENT
A Flourish of Music, then a Splash of Art F
Festival’s opening concert was held early this year.
or decades, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival has been known for its jazzy opening-weekend concerts, which have traditionally been held on Friday nights and provided a rollicking kickoff for the three-day event. This year, however, the concert was moved ahead, to Saturday, March 12. That means you’ll have already seen the show by the time you attend the festival. If you missed it, then you missed an incredible performance from Eric Darius, one of the hottest jazz and R&B saxophonists in the country. Darius’s most recent studio album, Breakin’ Thru’, debuted at No. 2 on the iTunes Top 40 Jazz Albums Chart. Darius appeared with two special guests: singer/ songwriter Rebecca Jade and guitarist JJ Sansaverino, both also chart-topping artists. The trio rocked downtown Winter Park. “I first fell in love with the saxophone as a 9-year-old and began playing at the age of 10,” Darius recalls. A year later, he began touring worldwide with Sonny LaRosa and America’s Youngest Jazz Band. With seven highly acclaimed albums in his discography, Darius continues to rack up some impressive statistics. He’s had three No. 1 hit singles and a dozen songs in the Top 10 on Nielsen’s R&R/Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. He was named 2004’s Debut Artist of the Year by Smooth Jazz News Magazine and was listed among 2015’s Top 10 Jazz Artists of the Year by the Society of European Stage Authors and Composers. In 2017, he was named Best Jazz, Saxophonist, Composer, Producer & Musician of the Year Award at the 1st Annual Citril Starz Awards. Citril Starz is a nonprofit organization that empowers and promotes the advancement of at-risk youth through the arts. Darius has made TV appearances on Fox’s The X-Factor, TNT’s Mob City and has shared the stage with Grammy award-winning artists Prince, Mary J. Blige, David Foster, Carlos Santana, Jamie Foxx, Babyface, George Benson, Marcus Miller, Wyclef Jean and many others. Rebecca Jade is an accomplished singer/songwriter who has been touring with Sheila E. since 2017 and most recently appeared in the Emmy-nominated TV 26 63RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL
show Let’s Go Crazy: The Grammy Salute to Prince that aired on CBS in 2020. She also sang background vocals for Sir Elton John at the 2020 Academy Awards. JJ Sansaverino has enthralled legions of fans touring the world with his “Benson meets Santana” musical style and his “take no prisoners” performance attitude. A 2020 single, “Style and Elegance,” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. A Berklee School of Music graduate, he has shared the stage with the likes of Maceo Parker, Victor Bailey, Gerald Albright, Randy Brecker, Shaggy, Ricky Lawson, Sean Paul, Rick Braun, the Marley Family and even performed for Sir Paul McCartney’s wedding in 2002. Eric Darius (below), one of the hottest jazz and R&B saxophonists in the country, appeared last Saturday with singer/songwriter Rebecca Jade (bottom left) and guitarist JJ Sansaverino (bottom right), both chart-topping artists.
ENTERTAINMENT Eclectic World Music Highlights Weekend
A
s always, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is presenting a dynamic lineup of entertainers during festival weekend. Although the traditional Friday night opening concert was moved to the prior Saturday, there’ll still be music throughout the day during festival hours. Performances will be on the stage in north Central Park. A full schedule is on page 25, but below are some of the featured acts.
FLINT BLADE
Friday, 3 p.m. The music of Flint Blade may fairly be described as otherworldly. The singer/multiinstrumentalist is best known for playing the Chapman Stick, a stringed instrument that looks like the oversized fretboard of an electric guitar. It combines the melodic range of guitar and bass but is played more like a piano, by tapping. He also plays the Caribbean steelpan — which he uses to create uplifting, ethereal soundscapes and bouncy rhythmic grooves — and is a master of beatboxing. Drawing inspiration from reggae, jazz, electronica and musical styles from around the world, Blade’s style is diverse and unique. Based in South Florida, he tours nationally, performing solo and with various ensembles. He has recorded several albums of original music under his self-managed label, In Love Records.
RENATO & GIANE
Friday, 4:30 p.m. Renato & Giane are Brazilian jazz and bossa nova musicians who, for the past 35 years, have played world music in Portuguese, English and Spanish. The couple, a duo with keyboards and vocals, have lived in Orlando for the past four years. They also performed at the festival in 2021.
ORLANDO CHILDREN’S CHOIR
Saturday, Noon The Orlando Children’s Choir, based in Longwood, is a performance-based organization comprised of talented, enthusiastic singers in grades K-12. Under the direction of Julie Campese, the choir educates and trains youngsters in the techniques of choral music, as well as how to perform it to the highest standards of each member’s age and ability. Regardless of previous experience, participants in the Orlando Children’s Choir are committed to developing and sharing their talents with everyone and to “inspiring kids one note at a time.”
PATCHOULI & TERRA GUITARRA
Saturday, 3 p.m. The nuevo-flamenco duo of Patchouli & Terra Guitarra melds the spirit of the ’60s and ’70s and the romance of the Spanish guitar to create music “that inspires the human spirit,” says the Chicago Tribune. Patchouli & Terra Guitarra features Bruce Hecksel, one of the most exciting acoustic lead guitar players of our time, and Julie Patchouli, whose crystal pure voice and dynamic percussive guitar have made her an NPR favorite. Through 19 years of nonstop touring, Patchouli & Terra Guitarra has performed more than 5,000 shows — headlining many major folk festivals — and released 22 CDs. Zone Music Reporter (ZMR) named Of Sea & Stars, the duo’s 2017 album, as “Best Instrumental Album of the Year.” 63RD WINTER PARK SIDEWALK ART FESTIVAL

THE FOUNDATION A Mission of Art Appreciation and Education
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Foundation remains focused on supporting community appreciation of the arts, providing programs that encourage creativity in children and funding college scholarships. The foundation supports the Children’s Workshop, the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit, the Emerging Artists Program, the Image Review Workshop, and Performing Arts at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. It also funds the Jean Alice Oliphant Scholarship at Rollins College in Winter Park and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival Scholarship at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. Founded in 2008, the foundation’s mission has been to enhance art appreciation, art education and community spirit. Typically, more than 1,000 children take the opportunity to display their creativity though easel painting, and museum workshops report more than 500 children per day take part in the hands-on art activities they provide. Each year, more than 4,500 Orange County students experience the thrill of having their artwork displayed and judged at the Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit. Added creativity was required during the 2021 festival due to COVID-19, which required that the museum projects and the schools exhibit be conducted virtually. The foundation received funding in 2021 from donations by the Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation, the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation, the Rotary Club of Winter Park, Pocket Program and the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt entity. If you’d like to donate or find out more, contact the foundation at P.O. Box 597, Winter Park, FL, 32790, email wpsaf@wpsaf.org or call 407-644-7207. n
The Image Review Workshop is now in its eighth year of helping artists apply.
The Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival appreciates the support and funding provided by the Joe and Sarah Galloway Foundation; it makes so many of the festival’s activities that are focused on children a reality. Programs like the museum workshops, easel painting, school exhibits, performing arts and emerging artists all give children and youth an opportunity to be creatively inspired at the festival.

ey kids, join the fun and create a unique piece of artwork that you can take home and share with your family and friends. The Children’s Workshop is open each day of the festival, Friday, Saturday and Sunday — and it’s free. The activities are located on the west side of the railroad tracks just north of Morse Boulevard near the post office. Be sure to bring an adult with you so they can sign you in. Easel painting is always popular, with more than 1,000 children and families participating each year. Kids get to paint a picture using the huge, outdoor easels that have been a part of the festival for 30-plus years. Easel painting hours are from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. In addition, museums and other community partners have exciting hands-on arts-andcrafts activities on all three days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. n

MORSE MUSEUM Returning Rites of Spring at the Morse
A
s part of Spring at the Morse, The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art’s celebration of the season, admission to the museum’s galleries and exhibitions is free during the entire weekend — Friday, March 18, Saturday, March 19, and Sunday, March 20 — of the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival. During the rest of its eight-week spring program, from March 25 through April 29, the Morse will present live music from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Finally, as is tradition, the Morse will offer free admission on Easter weekend, April 15 through April 17, with live music set for Good Friday. Now on view, The Stebbins Collection: A Gift for the Morse Museum, encompasses 70 paintings, works on paper and sculpture by 53 artists in three museum galleries. The Morse is home to the world’s most comprehensive collection of works by American artist and designer Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). These works include the chapel interior that Tiffany designed for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago, as well as surviving art and architectural elements from Laurelton Hall, his grand Long Island estate. The museum is located at 445 North Park Avenue. Through April, hours are 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Tuesdays through Thursdays and on Saturdays); 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Fridays); and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. (Sundays). Regular admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $1 for students, and free for children younger than age 12. Admission is free from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays from November through April. For those who would like to visit the museum virtually, the Morse offers many opportunities, including online activities, videos and an audio tour. Programs for families — designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade and their parents or guardians, but fun and free for everyone — may be found on the museum’s “Create and Explore” web page, morsemuseum.org/create-explore. The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art is owned and operated by the Charles Hosmer Morse Foundation and receives additional support from the Elizabeth Morse Genius Foundation. It receives no public funds. n
At the Morse, you’ll see a collection of Tiffany glass masterpieces, including Tiffany’s breathtaking Spring panel from Four Seasons window (right). EMERGING ARTISTS Let’s Meet This Year’s Festival Up-and-Comers
T
he Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival’s Emerging Artist Program was founded in 1977 to encourage new artists to participate in the world of outdoor festivals at no cost to selectees. Emerging Artists, who are selected through the same juried process as the festival’s other participants, will have the opportunity to make sales and receive feedback from art patrons and judges. While Emerging Artists are not eligible for prizes, the exposure and the experience are invaluable. This year, three artists were selected to participate:
LEILA ELGUENNICH
Leila Elguennich
Orlando, Florida Leila Elguennich, whose heritage is Moroccan and Japanese, is a Central Florida native and a visual artist who specializes in watercolor portraits that showcase the beauty of women of color. She paints portraits of females, she says, because they’re her favorite subjects. Elguennich has had award-winning paintings showcased in student exhibitions at local museums, festivals and even the United States Capitol. She is currently a student in the School of Art and Art History at the University of Florida, where she continues to improve and expand her craft. leilaelguennich@gmail.com • Booth Number: 212
WONDA GRANVILLE
Orlando, Florida Wonda Granville was born and raised in Oviedo, north of Orlando. She received a BS and MBA degree from Strayer University and worked in IT for more than 20 years. “Art has always been like a trusted friend,” she says. “We did things together, like getting into trouble in Mrs. Bower’s second-grade class for distraction because we had a line of girls waiting for me to draw mermaids.” When she was around age 15, Granville’s mother brought home a Southern Living magazine that contained an article called “Jericho” illustrated with Renaissance portraits of Black people. “I had never seen Black people painted so beautifully,” she adds. “I was inspired and asked God to help me draw all people as regal as that.” Over the years, she has learned to paint with acrylic, oil and watercolor. However, she describes drawing in charcoal as “a total adventure.” She adds: “Recently, I’ve learned to sculpt, which is so addictive.”

ANDREA ROMERO
Longwood, Florida Andrea Romero brings passion, color and stillness to our busy lives with her still-life paintings. Born in Bogota, Colombia, Romero moved to the United States at age 17. She’s a graduate of the Art Institute of Miami with a degree in Fashion Design, a student at the Crealdé School of Arts and winner of the Marie Orban Scholarship for Painting and Drawing. Her artwork has been displayed at the 40th Annual Juried Student Exhibition at Crealdé and also at the Orlando Museum of Art’s “First Thursdays” monthly exhibition. Romero, who has been drawing since she was a child, enjoys creating art that is simple yet captivating. Her style could be described as a blend of realism and illustration. Andrea Romero

IN MEMORIAM ROBERT (MONTE) LIVERMORE JR.
CHINA BEFORE COMMUNISM
Monte Livermore loved the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and was an enthusiastic festival ambassador. He joined the board in 2009 and served as co-president, along with Amy Thrasher, in 2018. Monte had a passion for helping the Patrons Program grow, was the liaison with the Winter Park Rotary Club for the Beer Garden and represented the festival on the Winter Park Arts and Culture Alliance committee. A horticulturist, Monty enhanced festival events with colorful flowers and seasonal plants. And when the events were over, board members delighted in taking them home to plant in their gardens. No doubt some of those plants are still growing and blooming as a reminder of the kind spirit and loving nature that was at the heart of Monte’s personality.
EL AINE “L ANIE” EDMUNDS SHOWER Lanie Shower started her career as a flight attendant with National Airlines and Pan American Airlines. She later became a Realtor and worked at Ann Cross and later Fannie Hillman + Associates, where she was a top producer. Her warm, welcoming personality was a perfect fit for the community volunteer work that she loved. Besides being a member of the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board in the early ’80s, she was involved with the Loch Haven Art Center, Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens and the Junior League of Greater Orlando. On the festival board, Lanie worked with artist applications and notifications as well as on the headquarters and merchandise committees. She was tireless, making sure that trays of notification letters made it to the post office on time even when she was nine months pregnant. She served as vice president of the festival in 1984.

RICHARD NORMAN AWSUMB JR. Richard Awsumb was a member of the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival board twice. He first joined in 1998 and worked on many committees until 2006, when he became a Sustainer. In 2016, he rejoined. Richard, a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, was a talented architect who used his professional skills to help the festival develop the intricate park maps that showed the festival’s footprint as well as where artists’ booth spaces were located. Most recently, he helped with the layout and logistics of the Schools Exhibit. But mostly, Richard loved the artists, enjoyed their creativity and was dedicated to making our festival a success for them.
