Mollusks in Cites

Family Strombidae Conchs (Strombus), spider conchs (Lambis), tibias (Tibia) and terebellums (Terebellum) are members of the family Strombidae. The family Strombidae contains forms that are variable in shape and sculpture, although most genera and species are readily recognizable as conchs by the presence of the "Stromboid notch" at the anterior part of the outer lip. This usually shallow notch is thought to serve as a "peek-hole" for the right eye for the conch. Commonly the anterior canal is long, the spire is conical and often with varices or growth thickenings, and the columellar callus is thick and strongly developed. The spire and body whorl are often heavily sculptured with ridges and knobs, but in many species are entire shell is practically smooth. Digits sometimes are found on the outer lip, and there may be a strongly developed posterior canal as well. At the base of the proboscis are the two usually greatly elongated eyestalks that end in large, round buttom-like eyes often with startling patterns of blue or yellow rings around a black central area. The eyestalks are often activily moving, apparently scanning the area for enemies. In most conchs the right eyestalk is somewhat to much shorter than the left, perhaps related to the presence of the stromboid notch on the outer lip at the right margin of the shell. Extending beyond the eyestalks are often very long and narrow pointed tentacles that are presumably either sensory in function or serve to help protect the eyes. The foot in most conchs is large, pointed, powerful, and with a large to small curved and serrated operculum at the behind end. The operculum is usually thickened on one margin and has the serrations of the other margin variable from small and rather indistinct to very large and few in number. Sexual dimorphism is sometimes prominent in conchs, with females
