600 million smartphone users, and 1,5001,800 films produced annually, India’s thriving media and entertainment industry provides exciting growth opportunities for both global and domestic companies. The Indian media ecosystem is changing fast. It is among rare markets in the world where both traditional and new media could be seen flourishing.
India has a huge room for growth for domestic media and entertainment companies as well as foreign media and film companies looking to tap the Indian market. Audio visual services are recognised as a champion sector by the Government of India. The policies are geared towards realising the full potential of the M&E sector – providing an enabling environment and lowering market barriers to propel growth.
The government has made India available for filming as part of these efforts, and a decision has been made to place the Film Facilitation Office’s operations under ‘Invest India’ in order to increase foreign investment in India through wellcoordinated efforts.
Now is also the time to make plans to attend the 53rd International Film Festival of India, Goa (November 20-28, 2022). The Indian Locations and Services Guide and the Special Edition of IFFI Goa 2022 are the main topics of our upcoming issue.
Feel free to email your thoughts and suggestions. We will be most happy to answer any of your questions and we are just few clicks away to set up meetings (www.pickle.co.in) for collaborating with Indian media and entertainment companies. Do drop in a line to get connected in the Indian M&E business.

The 53rd International Film Festival of India welcomes participants from all over the world in an effort to spread the joy of cinema
The 53rd International Film Festival of India (IFFI), which is scheduled to take place in Goa from November 20 to November 28, 2022, appears ready to provide attendees with an exhilarating experience with more than 300 screenings.
The 25 feature films and 20 nonfeature films that will be screened as part of the Indian Panorama,
the festival’s centrepiece, have been selected. The Kashmir Files (in Hindi), RRR (Roudram Ranam Rudhiram) (in Telugu), Tonic (in Bengali), Akhanda (in Telugu), and Dharmveer are among the 25 fulllength motion pictures chosen for the Indian Panorama 2022. (Marathi).
Other Ray: Art of Satyajit Ray (English), Pataal-Tee (Bhotiya), Taangh (English), Ayushman
(English), Khajuraho, Anand Aur Mukti (Hindi), Yaanam (Sanskrit), Beyond Blast (Manipuri), Madhyantara (Kannada) Veetilekku (Malayalam) and Little Wings (Tamil) are among the 20 nonfeature films chosen for the Indian Panorama 2022, which provides both young and established filmmakers with international distribution opportunities.
The purpose of the Indian Panorama is to choose both feature-length and short films with superior cinematic, thematic, and aesthetic merit in compliance with the requirements and guidelines in the aforementioned section regulations.
A total of twelve jury members for feature films and six jury members for non-feature films, each chaired by a distinguished individual from the Indian film industry, choose the films for the Indian Panorama.
IFFI’s theme has been “Joy of Cinema”, which is something that overrides any firewall, as the creative construct of IFFI is wired to get the best of cinema from across the world. IFFI 2022 will be organized by the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), which will also organize Film Bazaar from November 20 to 24.
Over the years, Film Bazaar has evolved into a one-stop shop for filmmakers, producers, sales agents, distributors, film festival programmers and financiers from around the world; a marketplace that encourages collaboration between the South Asian and international film fraternities.
Asia’s oldest event of its kind, IFFI still holds on to its pre-eminent position as a showcase of cinematic excellence. It has over the years witnessed numerous alterations in character, nomenclature, location, dates and duration. Through it all, it has remained steadfast in its emphasis on showcasing the diversity of Indian cinema as well as in its commitment to the celebration of excellence across moviemaking genres.
Over the past two and a half decades, several other international film festivals have sprung up across India, notably in Kolkata, Kerala and Mumbai, and they all contribute meaningfully to the collective task of taking quality cinema to people weaned principally on a staple diet of star-driven, song and dance extravaganzas.
tHe IndIan panoRama, a seCtIon tHat Is made Up oF botH FeatURes and non-FeatURes, opens Global aVenUes FoR FIlms made by VeteRans and neWComeRs alIke
But IFFI continues to retain its preeminent position owing to its size, scope and vintage.
Not just in the Indian context but also in relation to the other major Asian film festivals, IFFI matters. And this is despite all the inevitable ups and downs that it has seen over the years.
All the other major Asian festivals –Tokyo, Busan and Shanghai – are of far more recent origin and therefore lack the history that is associated with IFFI. IFFI hands out prize money to the tune of US$ 200,000. The winner of the Golden Peacock for the best film takes home $80,000. That apart, the best director and the Special Jury Prize winner bag $30,000 each, while the two acting prizes come with a cash component of $20,000 each.
IFFI also confers two Lifetime Achievement Awards – one to an international film personality, the other to an Indian great. The moves to push IFFI up a few notches have unfolded since the coastal state of Goa became its permanent venue in 2004. IFFI now has a far more settled feel than ever before, with each improvement in terms of infrastructure and programming initiatives adding value to both the event and the location.

Munirih Grace and Mariam Zohrabyan from Armenia. The film, where technology meets the storytellers, constructs a compelling world of music, motion and scent, following the journey of an orphaned heiress and musi cian, who grows up to be a woman on a mis sion. Despite her tumultuous life, she has one constant companion – the lingering Muskan scent.
Centering an unforgettable protagonist in Arnezeder’s Juliet, Le Musk is an ode to music and memory. The movie is a potent portrait of a woman spurned by the oldest, most treach erous quest of humankind — revenge.
Juliet yearns for normalcy, but her past doesn’t allow her the luxury of mundanity. Dipping into the abstract trenches of the woman’s psyche, Le Musk constructs a compelling world of music and scent that lay bare sinister and pure motives. As Juliet searches for the four men — the injured, the tattooed, the poacher and the ‘Musk’ — she must come face to face with the price of her purpose and confront the persistent presence of the past. As she inches closer to discovery, will she endure or will she break… irreversibly?
The idea for Le Musk was born out of direc tor Rahman’s conversation with his wife Saira Rahman. The partners share a love for per fume and wished to employ scent as a narra tive device in immersive cinema. They tapped into the infinite possibilities posed by immer sive VR soon after their exchange. Gradually, the world and characters of Le Musk took shape in the artist’s mind.
Shot in Rome, Le Musk is a technical mas terpiece with inter-disciplinary expertise coming together from around the world. Shot on 14 different cameras capture su per-resolution quality video. Post-produced in stereoscopic 360 VR workflow at higher resolution and frame rate, Le Musk’s was finished by 10 VFX houses from around the world with close to a Petabyte of data. ARR Studios produced the film in collaboration with Ideal Entertainment and Intel as coproducers, as well as Thenandal Studio and Palani Andavar Holdings as associate pro ducers. Gurachi Phoenix wrote the screen play and Rahman composed the music for Le Musk.

FESTIVaL oF THE unTaMEaBLE SPIrIT
is a popular bull taming sport that takes place in Tamil Nadu, India during the festival of Pongal. A centuries old practice, it dates back to the Sangam era when it was known as ‘Eru thazuval’ or embracing the bull. The term Jallikattu comes from the Tamil phrase ‘salli kaasu’ which means coins and kattu which means a package that is tied to the bulls horns as prize money. There are variations in the sport but the crux of it requires fighters to pounce on a running bull and try and hold onto its hump for a specific period of time or distance without falling off or getting hurt. The bull will try everything in its power to disengage the rider, shaking them off, stamping them, rearing up and at times even goring fallen participants. It takes one who is fleet footed with quick reflexes and has boundless courage to attempt this sport. Exemplified as a sign of bravery, this historic sport has breathed new life into the survival of the rare breed of Pulikulam bulls and is world over regarded as one of the most dangerous, thrilling and adrenaline pumping festivals ever. Watch as brave fighters come forward to take their chances while taming the beast. Join them as they celebrate the festival of the untameable spirit.

KuLaSEKHaraPaTTInaM
Thefestival of Dussehra is celebrated all over India as the triumph of Durga/Kali over dark forces in the form of the buffaloheaded Mahishasura. But in Kulasekharapattinam, a nondescript village in the southern part of the district of Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu, the celebrations are most remarkable. The Kulasai festival is a grassroots event marked by piety and pious commitment to the deity Mutharamman who presides over the temple at the heart of the celebration.
The popularity of the festival can be seen by the record crowds of devotees that come to the seashore temple. Kali, in the form of Mutharamman kills Mahishasura, who gets transformed into the lion that she rides. Those who take a vow to appease the deity deck themselves in the likeness of Gods and Goddesses like Kali, Durga, Shiva or Krishna or even as gypsies, bears or beggars! It all depends on the vow they take. This feature gives a new dimension to the Kulasai festival: while the devotees pledge their devotion to their deity and divinity walks in their midst.

THE SECrET LIVES oF agHorI SadHuS
The Aghoris are a small group of ascetics that are Shaiva sadhus. They follow the path of occult Aghori rituals in crematoriums. This is where they seek the prana or energy of the dead and attain detachment from human emotions. They roam naked and stay away from the world of illusions. They are fearless and eat everything from human faeces, animal flesh to the meat of the dead.
The belief of Aghor stems from the fact that everything God has created is beautiful. This is a cult of Hinduism known as the cannibal cult of India and notorious in its practices. They spend several years of their life in hardships to become Aghori as they wander the cremation grounds. Smeared with the ashes of the dead on their bodies and jewellery made from the bones of corpses, the Aghoris have the ultimate aim to break away from the cycle of rebirth. The documentary reveals the shocking world of the Aghori spiritual practices in their worship of Lord Shiva.

THEYYaM danCE oF THE godS
Theyyam
is a famous ritual art form of North Kerala in India where legends truly come to life. It brings alive the great stories of the state and glorifies the beliefs of the ancient tribes. Theyyam is a thousand-year-old dance form ritual so ancient that it predates Hinduism. The customary art assumes that man is a form of God who assures prosperity to the society through the Theyyam performance. Theyyattam or the ‘Divine Dance of the Deity’ is observed in local tiny temples where the performers embellish themselves with decorative red apparel, ornate headgear and golden ornaments. The art form includes dance, drama music and mime performances accompanied by the rhythmic beats of musical instruments. It gives importance to the worship of spirits and heroes of ancestors. There are over 400 separate Theyyams, each unique in its style and artistry performed yearly. The Theyyam season occurs from December to April in many temples or Kavu across Kannur, Nileswaram, Kurumathoor, Cherukunnu, Ezhom and Kunnathoorpadu in North Malabar. The divine deity (Theyyam) wears heavy makeup and adorns theatrical costumes and elaborate headgear. The mesmeric experience of the ritualistic sprightly dance amid glowing firelight of torches made of palm dried leaves and the spiritual influences of Theyyam stories are endless.

SILaMBaMMarTIaL arTS oF IndIa
Silambam
is one of the oldest martial arts in the world. It is a martial art which is mainly based on weapons, the most widely used weapon being a stick. Silambam has its roots in the state of Tamil Nadu, in South India. The word Silambam holds a meaning which describes the nature of the sport. Silam is ‘mountain’ and bam is ‘bamboo’ i.e. the main weapon used in this form of martial arts. In ancient days, pre-historic man used a bamboo stick to protect himself from approaching animals and inimical humans. Because of its usefulness, they always had the stick with them. When they went in search of food, they had to walk long distances. Playfully they swirled the sticks that they carried with them. As and when some inimical humans attacked them with sticks, they had to defend themselves with sticks. From then on various methods and techniques were discovered on how best to use a simple stick. These techniques include a variety of unique rotations and different methods of attacking and defending with a stick. Many moves were crafted after keenly observing different kinds of animals for e.g. rotation of a stick is associated with the trunk of the elephant, speed is related to a horse and when attacking is connected with a tiger.

Billedas Kamal Haasan’s 232nd movie, Vikram, written and directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj (whose Master released early last year), is backed by the Tamil megastar’s own production banner. The action thriller also features Vijay Sethupathi and Fahadh Faasil (in his third Tamil film) in stellar roles. Scheduled for release on March 31, 2022, the buzz around the film centres as much on the star cast as the de-aging technology that has reportedly been used a Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman for flashback sequences involving Kamal Haasan.
Details about the plot are under wraps, but it is speculated that Kamal Haasan plays a police officer in the film to Fahadh Faasil’s politician. No matter what, Vikram promises to be a film worth waiting for.
