This year’s TIFF features a notable lineup of Indian films:

“All We Imagine as Light” by Payal Kapadia (Canadian Premiere): This acclaimed Indian drama won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.

“Boong” by Lakshmipriya Devi (World Premiere): A highly anticipated new work.

“Superboys of Malegaon” by Reema Kagti (Gala Presentations): Showcased as part of the festival’s distinguished gala lineup.

“Awara” by Raj Kapoor (World Premiere of 4K restoration): Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the legendary director’s birth in 1924, featured in the TIFF Classics section.

Over the past two decades, Toronto has selected more than 80 Indian films, recognizing

works that embody the essence of Indian storytelling. With a strong Indian diaspora of over 1.6 million in Canada, including 700,000 Indian citizens and 250,000 students, there is a robust audience for Indian films.

As film critic Saibal Chatterjee aptly notes, “The festival has helped many Indian independent filmmakers find a doorway to global acclaim. Especially over the last 25 years, North America’s premier film festival, while continuing to embrace Indian cinema and catering to the South Asian audience in multicultural Toronto, has proven to be a wonderful platform for Indian directors crafting films of a different timbre.”

United to Drive AI Talent in Film

Women In Cloud (WIC) and TIFF Industry have announced a first-of-its-kind collaboration to unite technology and film for talent development within the AI economy. This ground-breaking partnership will debut at TIFF 2024 with key initiatives, including AI Talent Development Scholarships, an AI for Moviemakers accelerator, an industry panel, and the screening of WIC’s debut documentary, ICONS.

The AI Talent Development Scholarships will grant 1,000 Microsoft AI credential scholarships, valued at $4.5 million, to participants through the TIFF Industry ecosystem.

The industry panel titled “The Future of Media & Entertainment: AI-Powered Business Models and Gender-Inclusive Investments” will delve into how AI can revolutionize business models, enhance revenue streams, and foster gender representation in media.

Highlighting the collaboration’s spirit, ICONS, Women In Cloud’s debut documentary, will screen on September 6th, showcasing stories of women in tech and underscoring the power of media partnerships to drive economic inclusion and policy change.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting is set to host a session on 9th September at TIFF 2024 to simplify the newly revised incentives for filming and animation in India. Aimed at positioning India as a global content hub, the session will provide insights into the generous incentive schemes for international filmmakers and co-productions announced in November 2023 at the 54th International Film Festival of India.

Key highlights of the session will be presented by Shruti Rajkumar, Vice President, Invest India (I&B Desk) Film Facilitation Office include:

• Enhanced Incentives: Up to 40% of Qualifying Production Expenditure (QPE), capped at USD 3.6 million per project, marking a 12-fold increase.

• Eligibility & Documentation: Learn who can apply, key criteria, and the required documentation.

• Guided Application Process: The Film Facilitation Office will walk participants through the application steps, documentation, and best practices for successful fund disbursement.

TIFF CLASSICS SPOTLIGHT RAJ KAPOOR’S AWARA TO BE SCREENED IN 4K TO MARK HIS 100TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY

To mark the centenary of legendary filmmaker Raj Kapoor, TIFF Classics Section will host the world premiere of a 4K restored version of his 1951 classic Awara. The screening will take place on September 13, serving as a tribute to Kapoor’s lasting legacy in global cinema. Restored by NFDC’s National Film Archive of India (NFAI) under the National Film Heritage Mission, the film will feature enhanced color grading supervised by Kapoor’s nephew, Kunal Kapoor.
