fag.got (fag t) 1. there was a time when the word “faggot” meant a bundle of sticks. but then people started using it in an insulting, offensive way and things changed. so when you say things like “homo,” “dyke” and “that’s so gay” trying to be funny, remember, you may actually be hurting someone. 2. so please, knock it off. 3. get more information at ThinkB4YouSpeak.com e

publisher’s NOTE

And we're back! This past year has been a life-changer for me and as much as it pained me, I had to put the magazine on the backburner while I regrouped and got my life back in order. I did stay in print, in a way, by helping out my friends at the Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce with their quarterly publication, The Agenda, as the design director for the past 4 issues ... but I've done my time and moved on. Now, that therepubliq is back in print ... by popular demand (and y'all really are a demanding lot) ... and now that I've settled in to my new (and improved) life, I'm eager to get rolling on our upcoming issues this spring and summer.

First, I recap the maelstrom that was SXSW, sandwiched between the drunk fests of Mardi Gras and St. Patty's Day, and then I give you all a run down one what is looking to be a very busy April in the ATX. I thank you all again for your support and your patience and I look forward to seeing you all out and around the gAyTX sometime real soon. ArtErotica has been one of the most unique and scintillating art events in Austin. From lust to love, ArtErotica has it all; painted art, sculpture, fabrication, kitsch. It has been dubbed ‘Austin’s Sexiest Art Show,’ by the Austin Chronicle. Come find something to tickle your fancy, including erotic desserts and specialty drinks. Over the years, ArtErotica has grown into quite an experience and quite the fundraiser. The event offers something of interest for everyone; the curious, the clubber, the exhibitionist and the voyeur. Even the art critic who raised a furtive brow walked away with a treasure. The heart of this event is the amazing art auction, and that’s where you, the artist, come in! More information on page 11.

ENTERTAINMENT

The new location of Cheer Up Charlie's on Red River during SXSW / photo credit: Chase Martin

downtown updates Chase Martin

chase@therepubliq.com | @chaseinaustin Not much in the way of changes for 4th Street in the Warehouse District. The only item of note is an update on the soon-to-open (hopefully) Highland Club at 404 Colorado Street in the 8,700-square-foot space that used to house the infamous Yassine family's gay bar, Kiss & Fly. Robert Grunnah, a gay Austin real estate investor, is planning to open a gay bar of what he called a"cosmopolitan caliber" in an interview with the Austin Business Journal back in February. According to the story, he is spending $1.5 million of his own money to make it happen. He is working with Kelly Shannon from 2 Big Chairs to create the interior space, drawing inspiration from the "high-energy gay dance clubs in West Hollywood and the collective party vibe of Ibiza, Spain." In both the ABJ story and an email exchange with Grunnah, he mentions an opening in early summer, so we're looking at an opening date in June. We'll keep you posted once we get more details and a confirmed date. Over near the Austin Convention Center, the gay (and vet) owned, Brass House has expanded and is now serving up lunch and dinner in the old Ceviche space in what is now being called the Brass House Tavern. The

new space opened up right before SXSW this year. While the bar and restaurant are currently seperate and distinct spaces, the two are joined by the patio out back and patrons at Brass House can order from the Tavern menu. Austin's queer outpost on the east side closed up earlier this year when Cheer Up Charlie's lost their lease on their space on East 6th Street. That didn't keep them down for long as they opened up in the old Club de Ville space at 9th & Red River streets just in time for SXSW. At one point, the new space used to be the home of the lesbian club, Chances. It will be interesting to see how things work out for Tamara and Maggie at the new space, with their new neighbors. Also, prepare for construction in the area. They're about to start to demo the parking garage across 9th Street to make way for a 10-story Hotel Indigo that is scheduled to open up next spring or summer. With the addition of Cheer Up Charlie's on the north end, Chain Drive near the tail end, the quasi-queer Elyisum and gay-on-Tuesday Barbarella in between, Red River has more of a pink hue to it these days. It's quickly becoming the cultural counterpoint to 4th Street.

chase@therepubliq.com | @chaseinaustin I don't know about you, but SX kicked my ass. Don't get me wrong, I had a freakin' blast, but there wasn't a bone in my body that didn't hurt after all was said and done. Granted, having SXSW bookended by Mardi Gras and St. Patty's Day probably didn't help. It's probably a good thing that cold front rolled in and kept me from hitting up GayBiGayGay. Here's what my SXSW experience look liked if you just went by my photos. On the opening Friday night, therepubliq co-presented our 2nd annual #BigGay Kickoff Party, along with the Austin Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, at our fellow member Oilcan Harry's with libations provided for by our friends at Frot Vodka. People lined up for their ViG badges and their Big Gay Bags and to pick up the latest issue of The Agenda, the chamber's quarterly publication. Everyone agrees, the #BigGay Kickoff Party is the largest LGBTQ event at SXSW. We recovered the next day under overcast skies down at The Iron Bear for Polari's aGLIFF Brunch and hobknobbed with the filmmakers in town. Who would have thought that filmmakers where such a pretty crowd? The

night was capped off with the Battle of Hookup Apps as OkCupid, Grindr and Jack'd hosted overlapping/ competing events down on 4th Street at Oilcan Harry's and Rain ... at least there was that sexy guy from Jack'd (call me!). I wrapped up my SXSWi by waiting in line to check out the LGBT party of the gay gossip website Queerty at the Madison (a straight bar, go figure) where I ran in to the gay bear rapper, Big Dipper (ww. bigdipperjelly.com) and wrangled him in to coming on the OutCast the next day. Wednesday, I hit up Dumpster at Rain with Christeene fir Big Dipper's 4th Street debut. I would see him again on Thursday at Package Menswear's Rock Your Package showcase featuring bands rocking in their undies, OUTander on Saturday at Oilcan Harry's and again at Cheer Up Charlie's later that night where I ran in to Christeene again. (Seriously, I think she's stalking me.) As always, all these photos and more are available on our website and also on Flickr at flickr.com/therepubliq. You can also follow me out and around town on my website at chaseinaustin.com. 
