Experienced & Expecting
Perfectly Imperfect by Hope Corley
Almost 5 years ago, I was given the most shocking news I thought I would ever hear! Assuming that I was only having an abnormal period, I heard the doctor ask his nurse; “Do you see what I see?” Shocked, I nervously asked; “What is it that you see? What’s wrong with me?” The doctor moved his “Magic wand” and said; “Here is BABY A.... and here is BABY B..... “ “Are you kidding me?” I said. “There’s a baby in there!? AND a ‘baby B’?” Nearly collapsing to the floor, I let it sink it for a while and then cried hysterically wondering how on earth I was going to handle not only ONE newborn and a 2.5 year old, but TWO! After the initial shock of the realization that I was growing TWO human beings inside me, pregnancy became pretty fun. I began reading twin blogs, signing up for emails, and buying two of everything! Twins were going to be so much fun! Time went by, the cravings got stronger and the belly got bigger. I decided to switch my OB to Trinity Mother Francis so the NICU wouldn’t be so far away in the event we needed it. I went to my first sonogram appointment with the OB with joy and excitement! We were going to find out the sex of the babies! After a few minutes of the sonographer studying the screen, we quickly found out that “baby A”, a girl, had clubbed feet and wasn’t having much movement. We were shocked, what now? Onto a fetal specialist in Dallas to check out these clubbed feet. At 23 weeks, we went for our first visit with the fetal specialist to quickly find out that it wasn’t just clubbed feet. It was Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita. “Arthro-gry-what-sis!!??”Arthrogryposis. Baby A had joint contractures; her joints will be stiff. At this point, I didn’t know whether to be sad or scared, and to be completely honest, I don’t even remember the emotions I felt. I remember the doctor writing “Arthrogryposis” on a scrap piece of paper with strict instructions to “learn to say the word, but don’t Google it!” Don’t Google it? You know I did! I found baby cows with their feet bent back to their head, and babies with their feet to their ears and their hands in opposite directions. “Was this what my baby is going to look like?” I kept thinking.“What am I supposed to do? Is she going to even live?” Small Town Kids Page 4
Experienced & Expecting ................................. The pregnancy continued to go on, with monthly local OB appointments and monthly fetal specialist appointments in Dallas. I can still remember the look on the specialists faces every time we talked about Arthrogryposis and how devastating it was. They offered counseling on what to do if my baby came out mentally ill, or even died. They offered genetic testing, risking the life of one or both of the twins, to make sure that one wouldn’t be mentally ill. They basically traumatized me, but I had great faith that everything was going to be okay. I did my research, I said my prayers, and I prepared myself for a twin delivery and special needs. July 21, 2010 at exactly 38 weeks, I had a C-section and gave birth to two beautiful baby girls: Baby A, Audrie 6lbs 7oz
&
Baby B, Anna 7lbs 14oz
Audrie did turn out to have AMC. Her little feet tucked and stiff under her hiney, and her arms and wrists stiff with a few crooked fingers.
I never saw her Arthrogryposis when I looked at her. I saw Audrie, my perfect little Baby A and Anna, my perfect little Baby B, with no health issues. Audrie didn’t have anything going on with her brain or her muscles, she just simply had AMC, which only effected her joints, and muscle growth. Her movement was limited, and of course mobility too. But we did spend her first 2 weeks on earth in Children’s Medical Center, Dallas because of a bowel obstruction. At 3 days old, they removed 9 cm of her small intestine because of an obstruction, which left her with an ileostomy bag for the next 6 months of her life.
It was a trying time. My faith and strength were tested. www.smalltownkidsmag.com Page 5
Audrie developed as she should for the next year and a half. We went to numerous doctors’ appointments by the week, she endured numerous therapy sessions and we quickly adapted to the “special needs” life. Cognitively, she was developing just fine, her speech was great, and she wasn’t doing things like Anna was “physically”, but she was getting things done the way that her body allowed her. At 16 months, I noticed her starting to feel bad. She was throwing up constantly, losing weight, and was totally not herself. We went to many pediatrician and nutritionist appointments and they couldn’t quite figure out why she was throwing up so much until that week; THAT week from hell.
Everyday I saw the hopeless look on the doctors faces. They didn’t think there was much hope for her. She had fluid on her brain, strokes, she was trached and was getting fed through a tube, but I had hope, and I had lots of it. I developed a relationship with God that I never experienced before. I was helpless, I was at the bottom. He was all I had. He saw me through! I had a wonderful support system at home. The entire community was showering us with gifts and prayer. It was absolutely humbling!
After 3.5 months in the hospital, Audrie was FINALLY infection free and homeward bound! The meningitis took the hearing from her left ear, left her with a trach and central sleep apnea, epilepsy, and a feeding tube. But I STILL had my baby. She wasn’t the same Audrie Audrie wasn’t herself, she wouldn’t eat, she wouldn’t play, and she that I once had, but she still had life! The infectious disease team told me that how I saw her in 6 months- 1 year was how I could expect her even cried when you tried to hold her. She developed a temperature that wouldn’t come down. The doctor was convinced that it was a viral to be for the rest of her life. infection. Her instructions were to let her sleep it off. And that she did. November 2014 will be 3 years since the meningitis. Audrie has been She slept for two days until she woke up crying non-stop. Nothing I seizure free for 10 months now, she’s learning words. She’s only a few steps away from being a “typical four year I, as her mother, for the first time, could not help her. old!” My Audrie is completely back. She’s proved every doctor that she So we went to the ER and were quickly flown back to Dallas Chil- has seen, totally wrong and she’s shown us exactly what life is about, dren’s Medical Center and immediately transferred to the trauma unit and that’s exactly what God told us; Faith, Hope, and Love. where her temperature spiked to 106, her heart rate through the roof, Life with a special needs child can be quite difficult at times, not and she began to seize. Everything we have experienced, seen, and lived with everyday is transforming us into the people we’re supposed to be. It was Bacterial Meningitis. How did this happen? What did I do Life with special needs is hard. No one asks for it, wrong? Why is this happening to us? Why her? I could see the devastated look on everyone’s faces. I didn’t know what Bacterial Meningitis was, but it obviously wasn’t good. They finally got Audrie stable while a nurse offered for me to go outside and take a break. I ran. I ran fast to find the door. I hit my knees in the ambulance bay and prayed. I was losing my baby girl and I didn’t know what to do. So I prayed until I didn’t have any words left to say. I gathered myself, and a calm feeling came over me. I felt God telling me to leave it to him. I felt faith flowing through my veins, and I felt God put his hands around me and assure me that everything was going to be okay. We spent months at the hospitals. Months of torture. We spent Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s in the hospital. It was tiresome and very hard. It seriously tested my faith, but I pushed on. Small Town Kids Page 6

TRAVELING with KIDS E by Wendy Jackson
very Thanksgiving when I was a kid, my family would travel to my Great Aunt Eva’s house in Shreveport. That would be one of the few times each year that all of the cousins, aunts and uncles on my mom’s side of the family would get to see each other. To me, going to Shreveport and into another state was a huge, fun adventure! One year, we were traveling on Interstate 20 when we came to a complete stand still in traffic. After over an hour of no movement, we noticed the people in the car in front of us get out and pop their trunk. They had different platters of food and were checking on them. Then they just started chit-chatting with other drivers now standing by their cars. In my mom’s normal bubbly fashion, she got out and walked over to see what food they had to take to their holiday dinner and asked where they were headed. In no time, these complete strangers in the middle of the interstate were taking taste samples of each other’s Thanksgiving foods! My dad told my brother to reach back and grab the box of fried chicken and the two of them sat there eating greasy chicken thighs in the car. Needless to say, by the time we finally got to Aunt Eva’s that day, we weren’t the least bit hungry. But that was one of the most memorable Thanksgivings we had. Everyone else laughed about our traffic story, then ate what was left of our picked at food. Afterwards, we all relaxed and watched the Cowboys game in no hurry to get back on the road.
The busiest travel season is upon us. More than likely you may be traveling this coming holiday season and my family is no exception.
Now that I’m a mom, I have learned that taking family trips is much more fun and exciting for the kids and a lot of work for the parents. Honestly. So much work, but I’ve learned some serious lessons in parenting on not losing my mind when traveling with kids. Plan for entertainment When we hit the road in our family’s suburban, we have the built in DVD player on the ceiling with attached head phones. The best invention since the microwave I might add. Life is great. We can find a movie to suit our kids’ age range of seven years. My basic rule for watching a movie in the car is the trip has to be an hour or longer. That way, when we do go on a longer trip, the DVD player in the car is that much more entertaining over the usual staring out the window of the shorter car rides.
DID YOU KNOW? The Thanksgiving and Christmas/New Year’s holiday periods are among the busiest long-distance travel periods of the year ĂĐĐŽƌĚŝŶŐ ƚŽ dŚĞ hŶŝƚĞĚ ^ƚĂƚĞƐ ĞƉĂƌƚŵĞŶƚ ŽĨ dƌĂŶƐƉŽƌƚĂƟŽŶ͘ During the 6-day Thanksgiving travel period, the number of long-distance trips ;ƚŽ ĂŶĚ ĨƌŽŵ Ă щĚĞƐƟŶĂƟŽŶ ϱϬ ŵŝůĞƐ Žƌ ŵŽƌĞ ĂǁĂLJͿ

Schedule your departure around the kids For super long trips, eight hours or more, we like to leave super early in the morning. Others have said that leaving after bedtime and driving through the night is good too. As admitted morning people, we once left at 3:30 in the morning for a drive to New Mexico with our pajama-clad crew snoozing in the back and not even making our first stop for 5-6 hours down the road. We still claim that to be one of our best decisions ever as parents. Truly. For shorter, yet still long trips, we leave right at the beginning of what would be our toddlers’ naptimes. They are routine kids, and will be snoozing within minutes. This allows us the first couple of hours with just our older kids awake and doing the car activity of their choice. Traveling with infants is not a breeze. Sure they sleep most of the time, right? If you’re lucky to have the other children in your vehicle ride quietly next to your sleeping baby (no one ever), then yes it’s quite simple. Anytime we had to travel with an infant, we scheduled the ride around the baby’s play and sleep time; just another perk of having your infant on a great eat/play/sleep routine so you can plan that time while on the road. Try to leave right after a feeding so you can get a good couple of hours down the road while baby is happily awake and then takes a nap before waking up for the next feeding.
I carry cleansing wipes and zip lock bags in my car and potty breaks for my daughter are a breeze. I’ve put this to use in other places too, like a hiking trail, a disgusting baseball field potty, our family’s deer lease and other inconvenient restroom locations. Whoever thinks this is absolutely gross and absurd has never gone on a road trip with a toddler or preschooler. It happens and more times than not, you have little to no warning to find the nearest gas station. To help make the car ride easier for everyone involved, have your group use the restroom when you stop at a restaurant or gas station. I make mine go no matter what. My kids always wait until the last minute. Nothing like traveling 70 mph down the interstate when you hear your three year old yell, ‘I gottagooooooo,’ complete with the wrinkled up look of distress. Making them go will minimize these emergency side-of-the-road incidents but never prevent them completely.
Give infants time When it is time to feed the baby, you obviously need to stop the car for taking the baby out of the seat. Whether you’re nursing or bottle feeding, babies shouldn’t be fed strapped in their seat because of choking, burping or spitting up (and all of the above at the same time usually). Just like planning our drive for during naptime, we always planned our gas stops and food stops for when I knew it was nursing time. Schedules are awesome, did I mention? After feeding, hold your baby for a while to allow any spitting up Pack snacks or poopies to happen before getting back in the car. Remember how Did I mention to pack snacks? Oh and pack snacks. And when you infants’ little tummies digest warm milk so fast and almost immedipack these snacks, make sure they aren’t choking hazard-type foods like grapes, suckers or gum. Do you offer your services to women and men? Absolutely! We cater to men and women and have a great success rate with each. We also have had several couples join to start their journey together and be their accountability partner.

Our purpose is to provide a carefully planned, stimulating environment using the Montessori curriculum and materials that allows the child to develop a foundation of habits, attitudes, skills and ideas which are essential for a lifetime of creative thinking and learning. Our teachers and staff recognize the child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn and provide them with the materials and tools that further develop and channel that desire. Each child is allowed to develop and progress at his/her own pace.
