Mayor’s Point Bill Krawietz Mayor of Bulverde, TX

A strong military is important for national security and to protect our freedom. The military fights threats all over the world, so thorough training is vital for their success. Bulverde’s neighbor, Camp Bullis, plays an important role preparing personnel for not only the armed forces, but for other agencies such as the DEA and FBI as well. In fact, Bullis is the only field training site for our military’s medical personnel. Growth and development now threaten Camp Bullis’ very existence in many ways. Bulverde is committed to protecting this asset; we have been proactive because we face many of the same challenges. The City recently met with military personnel to discuss Installation Encroachment and Compatible Development. Current development activity is affecting the installation in several ways; for example, compromising the Dark Skies needed for night training; displacing wildlife and causing uncommon animal and

bird population concentrations that are affecting the training environment; and causing water issues, both in terms of not enough well water and having too much storm runoff. Conducting missions at night can offer many advantages, but how can troops effectively train for such missions when light pollution from nearby development lights the sky? Long before the Texas Legislature gave Comal County the authority to regulate outdoor lighting adjacent to Camp Bullis, Bulverde adopted a Dark Sky Ordinance. This ordinance requires outdoor lighting fixtures to point down. The light must also be shrouded to prevent light from escaping above a horizontal plane. Development is also displacing wildlife. The removal of trees from neighboring property forces birds to relocate to the Camp as a sole refuge. This has caused an increase in bird strikes for aircraft conducting operations at Bullis. Bulverde has a tree preservation ordinance, but there are new efforts at the State level to strip Cities of such authority. The feral hog population has also increased at an alarming rate. These animals are known for destroying fencing and digging and burrowing holes looking for food. There has (Continued on page 4)

been an increase in injuries to military personnel caused by tripping and stepping into these holes. Regional overdevelopment has caused a depletion of the Trinity Aquifer. Many parts of the Camp served by water wells have seen a drop in production. The other side of the water issues is an increase in flooding and erosion. Most of the roads on Bullis are not paved, and runoff has greatly affected accessibility and mobility. There was some new State legislation aimed at giving Counties and Cities greater tools to protect our military installations. Unfortunately, time ran out to pass it during regular session. It will be interesting to see if our lawmakers will consider this important topic during the upcoming special session. There are many secondary benefits to military installations. One of the biggest is the benefit to the local economy. It would be a shame if our local military bases were once again targeted during the next round by the Base Closure and Realignment Commission in 2019.

Comal County Corner By Scott Haag

Last summer, Comal County was putting the finishing touches on our new Bulverde Annex – providing new space for the Precinct 2 Constable and Justice of the Peace offices and the county’s Bulverde-area Tax Office and County Clerk’s Office branches. Since then, we’ve also finished the removal of the previous Tax Office building and putting the final touches on the parking lot to make jury-duty days and other high-traffic times easier for you, the residents we serve every day. Since the Bulverde Annex opened last summer at 30470 Cougar Bend, the Clerk’s Office has served more than 400 people, providing services including copies of birth and death certificates and marriage licenses, and recording plats and assumed names. Likewise, more than 2,500 people have come through the Precinct 2 JP office – paying citations, reporting for jury duty, dealing with other cases or simply asking a question. And hundreds more have paid their property taxes, registered vehicles and taken care of other business with the county’s Tax Office. Overall, easily more than 3,000 Bulverde/Spring Brancharea residents have used the Annex in the 10 months since it opened. We hope those of you who have visited found it a welcoming and convenient place to do your business with the county. If you haven’t yet, we encourage you to come and take a tour. It is, after all, your building. Scott Haag is Comal County Commissioner for Precinct 2.

100!

Certain milestones should absolutely be celebrated, and a 100th birthday is certainly at the top of the list. Happy 100th Birthday to Bulverde resident Eldor Mickan! Eldor was born in Copperas Cove, Texas, near Killeen and Fort Hood, on July 27, 1917. He has lived in the Bulverde area for 3 years, right next door to his daughter Nita. If you see Eldor out and about, be sure to wish him the happiest of birthdays!

BOX FANS NEEDED As the central Texas summer heats up, some of our most vulnerable residents are at risk for succumbing to heat-related illnesses and possibly even death due to the intense high temperatures. Seniors and families subsisting on fixed or low incomes are often hard-pressed to pay the high electric bills caused by the use of their home air conditioners, or in many cases, they don’t have air conditioning at all. It is for these folks that the Bulverde/Spring Branch Activity Center and Provisions: A 25:35 Outreach (the Bulverde food pantry) are seeking donations of box fans. Both organizations would like to be able to offer the fans to our clients who need them the most. If you, along with your family, business, church, or service/civic organization would be able to donate a fan, or several fans, the Activity Center and Provisions would be very grateful for your support. Donated fans can be dropped off at the BSB Activity Center at 30280 Cougar Bend, Bulverde TX 78163 or at Provisions at 2295 Bulverde Road, Bulverde TX 78163 (behind Wine 101). The two organizations will collaborate on distribution as needed. Donations are tax deductible, as both organizations are 501(c)(3) nonprofits. We are happy to provide donation receipts upon request. For more information, please contact Senior Outreach Coordinator Andrea Jenkins at the BSB Activity Center, 830-438-3111, or Executive Director Weslea Miller at Provisions: a 25:35 Outreach, 210-316-1940.

Enjoying Summer Safely Bulverde Police Department

As we find ourselves in the “dog days” of summer as they say, it’s also a good time to remember that we need to enjoy the summer safely. When researching the dangers of summer, the following seven topics seemed to consistently arise.

3. Dehydration Disasters South Texas is notorious for hot, humid summers. The combination of the two can be deadly. When the heat is on, remember to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade to cool down.

1. Mower Injuries

4. Sunburn

Spring showers bring May flowers, as well as lots of other weeds and grasses. As the number of people mowing increases, so do the number of hand and toe injuries. Never attempt to clear anything from the mower without first turning it off completely.

Not remembering the sunblock can be a bad start to a good vacation. Too much sun has also been linked to skin cancer, so apply sunblock regularly or cover up.

2. Boating Accidents Boating in the summer months is a great way to enjoy the summer but can also be very dangerous, especially if too much alcohol is consumed. Remember the elements of DWI are the same when operating a boat.

5. Food Poisoning An estimated 300,000 people are hospitalized every year due to food poisoning, with the peak months happening in the summer. Storing food properly and washing your hands are two of the best defenses against foodborne illnesses. 6. Fireworks Safety Most injuries from fireworks were found to be to the hands and eyes. If you’re going to celebrate with fireworks, please do so safely. 7. Summertime Stings For most, a bee or wasp sting is just painful, but for some it can be life threatening. Should any of the following symptoms occur after a sting, you should seek medical attention immediately: • hives, itchiness, and swelling over large areas of your body, • tightness in the chest or trouble breathing, • swelling of the tongue or face, or • dizziness or feeling you will pass out.

Safety around the City and local construction projects The City of Bulverde has several road repair projects scheduled for the summer months, with four of those projects considered major—Casey Rd, Old Boerne Rd, Heimer Lange, and Rodeo Dr. There are some areas on these roads that will need to be reconstructed. Although children may find the equipment and the process interesting, safety is a top priority for the City and the crews on site. Please keep children at a safe distance and be patient, as the process can sometimes slow traffic or create detours. Regardless of what you do this summer let’s make sure it’s done safely.

LOCAL NONPROFIT NEWS Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center Names New Executive Director and Senior Outreach Coordinator The end of May brought a changing of the guard at the BSB Activity Center. Both Executive Director Laurie Wilson and Senior Outreach Coordinator Wendy Hahn stepped down from their respective positions, both wishing to spend more time with their families and pursue other endeavors. Laurie and Wendy both will continue to volunteer at the Center in various capacities. Stepping in to fill these positions are Kim Kelley as the new Executive Director and Andrea Jenkins as the new Senior Outreach Coordinator. Kim has served at the Center for some time, and has worked closely with Laurie throughout her tenure. Her selection as the new Executive Director was a natural choice for the organization. Andrea Jenkins has been with the Center for three months, training with Wendy for the Outreach Coordinator position in anticipation of Wendy’s departure. Both positions are in very capable hands. In addition to Kim and Andrea, Sandra Faust has been newly appointed as the Meals on Wheels Coordinator. The MoW program serves a local population of home-bound seniors, providing not only nutritional support, but also a friendly daily visit for many folks who would otherwise be isolated in their own homes. Sandra will be managing all aspects of the meal delivery program. Many thanks to Laurie and Wendy for their years of dedicated hard work, and best wishes for their future plans.

Provisions: A 25:35 Outreach Offers Thanks to the Community Over the past several weeks, Provisions: A 25:35 Outreach, the Bulverde food pantry, has been the recipient of many kindnesses from the Bulverde community. We would like to thank some good people who have provided time, talent, and treasure to our organization: Mr. Eddie Langford of Langford Builders and his crew, Michael and Francisco, for some wonderful carpentry work and some much needed shelving in our warehouse; the Men’s Group of Bulverde Baptist Church, the Lagoudis family, and Garrett Ashley and the youth from Bulverde Baptist Church, all provided some hard work in cleaning up our yard and replacing the surface of our loading dock—which was no small task! Helping with the dock were some of our local Spring Branch-Bulverde Lions, Margie and Larry Sunn and Adrian Valdez, whose help was MUCH appreciated on a hot day. Home Depot also

provided support for this project, so many thanks to Mr. Greg Mills and his team there. Provisions has recently been blessed by monetary donations through the Big Give event which was held in May—thank you to those who donated through that platform. We have also received many donations of food—most notably, donations given by two generous young donors who each independently conducted food drives on our behalf! Many thanks to River and Hailey for being so thoughtful, and to their parents for raising socially aware and active children. Special thanks for food donations also go out to the students at Rahe-Bulverde Elementary School who donated more than 600 lbs. of groceries; to the Chapmans at Bulverde Feed & Seed for keeping the critters fed; to Roger Hanson of Mike’s in the Village for providing some amazing prepared meals for our clients; and to the Bulverde Community Garden and the Comal County Master Gardeners for their ongoing contribution of fresh, organic produce. Provisions provides food for as many as 600 people per month (on average)—almost all of whom live within the four zip codes that surround Bulverde. Our mission is to help feed families who otherwise would not have enough food to make it through the month without compromising some other aspect of their wellbeing. Being an independent 501(c)(3) organization, we could not serve our clients without the support from our community. We wish to thank everyone who has contributed to our organization—your generosity enables us to continue to help families in need. Provisions is open for food distribution on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 9:00am to 3:00pm. We welcome visitors and new clients. Please come see us if you need us. Please come see us if you’d like to know more about what we do. We are located at 2295 Bulverde Road, behind Wine 101.

4th of July Pet Safety Tips Megan Hughes, DVM Did you know that more pets go missing on July 4th than any other holiday? Fireworks, BBQ’s and other 4th of July traditions can be great fun for people; but all of the festivities can be frightening and even dangerous for animals. Fireworks are very scary for pets and they will often try to escape and run away. Holiday foods can make pets sick. Summer weather and can cause heatstroke. Take these steps to keep your pets safe this Independence Day: • Make sure your pets have identification tags and a microchip with your current contact information. • Make sure the environment is safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, is your yard secure enough to keep your pet contained? • Leave your pets at home when you go to parties, fireworks, or parades. Loud fireworks and crowds can all be very frightening to pets, and there’s high risk of pets becoming spooked and running away. • Put your pet in a safe kennel or secure room during parties and fireworks. • If your pet has noise phobias or has historically been very anxious on the 4th of July, consider speaking with your veterinarian about medications that can help with anxiety in pets. • Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks. • Keep sparklers, glow sticks, and fireworks, away from the reach of pets. • Don’t let pets get near your barbecue grill while it is in use or still hot. • Don’t feed your pets table scraps or other foods intended for people. • Remember that pets are very prone to heatstroke while outdoors. Keep them inside when it’s extremely hot/humid; make sure they have access to shade and plenty of water when outdoors. • Never leave your pet in your vehicle alone. Vehicle interiors heat up much faster than the air around them, and even a short time in a locked car can be deadly to pets. • don’t walk your dog on hot pavement, they can burn their paw pads in a few more Jutes on hot pavement. Have a safe and fun 4th of July, from everyone at Spring Branch Veterinary Hospital Page 8

About 1,500 Comal ISD Seniors Toss Caps In the Air During Graduation Week Canyon High saw about 570 seniors cross the stage. From Smithson Valley High, approximately 560 seniors received their diplomas. Canyon Lake High completed the festivities when approximately 210 seniors earned the right to throw their graduation caps high into the air.

Comal Independent School District celebrated the accomplishments of nearly 1,500 seniors this year during graduation week in early June. Comal Academy, the district’s self-paced campus, started the pomp and circumstance on June 1, in the Smithson Valley High School Performing Arts Center. At that time, about 70 seniors received their diplomas. Approximately 50 Memorial Early College High School with St. Philip’s College students graduated at Canyon High School Performing Arts Center stage on June 2. Alan Martinez was the Valedictorian and Jacob Lane was the Salutatorian. Saturday, June 3 was the big day as Canyon, Smithson Valley, and Canyon Lake high schools all conducted graduation ceremonies at Strahan Coliseum at Texas State University in San Marcos.

Fashion Comes to Bulverde There is no need to visit the Big Apple for a glimpse at the latest in fashion and style this summer. The Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center will be hosting The Annual Style Show and Luncheon on July 22, 2017. This event has become one of our favorite fundraisers. It is an afternoon of fun, fellowship, and food, highlighted by fashions provided by Dress Barn in the Village At Stone Oak and Be Fabulous. Every table has a theme and will be decorated to the nine’s. Decorations are guaranteed to wow and impress. Some hostesses have been planning their tablescapes since last July. Members of the community will be modeling these ready-to-wear fashions. The audience will be shown attire in casual, business, and after-5 styles. Models will be escorted by members of our own Bulverde Spring Branch EMS team. There will be dancing in the aisles. In years past, it has not been uncommon to see a conga line as a closing activity. A good time is had by all. Gift baskets that have been donated by businesses and individual members of the community will be part of a raffle. These baskets will be on display the week of July 17 and tickets may be purchased at the Activity Center for a chance to win. One of last year’s participants described the event as “a great time for comradery. The tables are always unique and the food is good. I left with a smile on my face.” This event is always a sellout. Purchase your tickets early. For more information please call 830-438-3111.

Bulverde Park’s Little Free Library Offers Books to Share Take a book. Leave a book. That’s the concept behind the Little Free Library to be installed at Bulverde’s Community Park by the Parks Committee and the Spring Branch Bulverde (SBB) Family Lions Club; it is a concept that makes it easier for readers to find a book for free or pass one on to others. Local State Farm insurance representative, Kathleen Banse, purchased and donated the Little Free Library “building” and has joined with the Bulverde Spring Branch (BSB) Library and the Bulverde Parks Committee to bring the Little Free Library outpost to the main entry of Bulverde’s stunning park. Banse recently obtained one of the decorated boxes, which are about 18 inches long and 14 inches deep, and asked the City Council via the Park Committee for permission to install it in the Park. The free book exchange program has ignited book lovers around the world. “What better place to have this little library when you have somewhere between 8,000 to 10,000 visitors per year come to the park,” Banse said. “It provides people an opportunity to browse and maybe it will encourage them to read more or maybe they’ll stop in at our local library.” The national Little Free Library organization was created in Hudson, Wisconsin, in 2009. The libraries—essentially protected boxes that hold books people donate—provide books for anyone who wants to read them with no costs, no signouts, and no strings attached. The idea is to take one of the books in the box or exchange it for a book the reader has finished and would like to share. Anyone taking a book can keep it. There are 50,000 Little Free Library book exchanges around the world, in all U.S. states and 70 countries. Readers can find nearly 50 of the over-sized birdhouse-like boxes in front of homes and public libraries around the greater San Antonio area, including two in New Braunfels, four in Boerne, and one in Fair Oaks. Persons seeking more information about the world-wide literacy program will find it at The Little Free Library’s website at: https://littlefreelibrary.org/. Our Bulverde Park’s location is being added to the site’s long list of little libraries.

Herr, has volunteered library resources to provide an initial supply of books, and Bulverde’s little park “library” will be born.

After it is installed in the park on July 14th by the SBBLions, Susan and BSB library officials will stock the Park’s Little Free Library box with the initial offerings. Director Herr emphasized, “At the BSB Library, we encourage literacy in many ways, whether it be through books from our library or through exchanges like The Little Free Library.” Pleased with the resource addition, she indicated that library personnel will make sure the box remains stocked with a range of offerings for adults, children, and teens. Herr added that the program is an encouraging way for people to help their unwanted books find new homes, for them to obtain books they have wanted to read for some time, and it’s an excellent way for them to explore new authors.

Little Lions are Wild for Reading! It may be summer vacation, but this class of very accomplished readers from Gloria Deo Academy will continue to hone their reading skills throughout the hot months of summer as they visit the BSB Library. This is the Little Lions Pre-K class of Gloria Deo Academy. Taught by Amie Jurica, these kiddos, along with their cooperative families, read a total of 4102 books during the school year! That’s a lot of reading! To finish off the school year with a flourish, every student in the class earned their very own library card to the BSB Library. Congratulations to all of the Little Lions for their accomplishments!

On the Cover Looking like a scene from Mayberry, little Carter T. is soaking up the sun and breaking in his new fishing pole at the Guadalupe River. Locals and tourists alike flock to the river during the hot Texas summer, looking for relief from the heat and a little R & R. Good luck with that new pole, Carter! Hope you catch a big ol’ stringer full of fishies!

VIAL OF LIFE PROJECT One of the first things emergency responders want to know is your list of medications. When you can’t speak for yourself, when you are confused, in pain or scared, the Vial of Life can speak for you. The Vial of Life program is nationally recognized as saving countless lives each year by providing paramedic rescue with pertinent medical information during an emergency. When first responders are dispatched to a home that displays the decal on the front door, they know to retrieve the documented medical information contained in this vial from your refrigerator. Your Bulverde Spring Branch Fire & EMS stations have these free Vials of Life for their citizens. Steps for Using the Vial of Life: 1. Fill out the Medical Vial Information form • Make blank copies of this form to keep your information current or maintain and store on your family computer • Complete the Medical Vial Information form with as much detail as possible

3. Placement of the Vial of Life decal • Place the decal on the front door so it can easily be seen by anyone responding to an emergency Some final thoughts: • When information is stored electronically, it allows you to easily change your medical information, telephone numbers, doctors, etc. and print out an updated copy. For example, if you have stopped taking a medication, it can simply be updated on the electronic “copy,” and this is important information for paramedics to know. • A Living Will and a Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) order are legal documents that allow a person to predetermine the type of care they wish to receive in the event of a sudden or chronic terminal condition. These forms are available at all physicians’ offices. Bulverde Spring Branch Fire & EMS will be more than happy to assist you with the completion of your form(s). Please call the station at (830) 228-4501, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

• Record the date of completion on the form and sign

Texas summers mean extreme heat and, in many areas, high humidity. Regions throughout the state experience multiple triple digit temperature days during the summer months. Extreme heat can pose a serious health concern to both humans and animals. It is important to protect yourself, your family, and your pets from the dangers of extreme heat by taking precautionary measures during those hot summer months.

The biggest culprit is sunlight coming through the car’s windows. The car acts as a greenhouse, and heats up objects in the car—the dashboard, the seats, and other interior items can reach up to 180º to 200º in direct sunlight. Those objects give off energy and that’s what heats up the air inside the car through both convection and conduction. The second biggest factor is the interior color of the car. If you have dark seats and dashboards, the sun will heat them up more quickly. Your car’s sunroof could be another contributing factor because it’s another window that sunlight can penetrate. How to mitigate the rising temperatures in your car: • Crack the windows (NOTE: Leaving the windows slightly open does not significantly decrease the heating rate, but will allow for ventilation) • Block the sun with windshield sunshades • Parking in the shade is by far the most effective approach, but don’t be fooled. On an 80º day, for example, a car parked in shade could still heat up to 100º The bottom line: Don’t take a chance by leaving people or animals in your vehicle, particularly in the summer. Under the hot summer sun, make safety priority number one.

Kathleen Banse State Farm Insurance Another Heat Danger… It’s hot and your car has been parked in the blazing sunshine all day. You hop in and the seats feel like they’re burning your legs and the steering wheel is untouchable. Think about this, on a 90º day a car can reach in excess of 140º in just an hour’s time. So how and why does that happen?

Opportunities to Support Your Local Park The Bulverde Community Park Association is looking for a few local businesses or individuals to help provide some additional seating in the park. Since the park remodel was completed in 2014, daily use of the park has soared. Each day, hundreds of folks walk, exercise, play in the playgrounds and ball fields, and gather in the pavilions for family gatherings or local events. Donations to the park truly help the entire community. There are a few spots where additional park benches or picnic tables are needed. Donations are tax deductible and you will receive an engraved 8 square brick to be placed in the park to commemorate your generosity. This is a great way to help the community and become a real part of its culture. Sponsorships start at $1000. Please contact Merri Harrison at merrijoharrison@gmail. com or via cell# 210.387.9332.

7 Garden Vegetables Everyone Should Be Eating! by Jan Tilley

Fresh Corn—Antioxidant activity, which helps protect the body from cancer and heart disease, is actually increased when corn is cooked. Sweet corn is loaded with lutein and zeaxanthin, two phytochemicals that promote healthy vision and brain function. A midsize ear offers a helpful 3-gram dose of dietary fiber.

Those of us who love gardening know that our favorite time of year is that first harvest of summer vegetables from our garden. There is something magical about enjoying the work of your own hands in growing a delicious array of produce. Vegetables from the garden have such a unique, fresh taste. Consider the difference between a tomato purchased at your local supermarket in February versus a tomato picked in June from your garden and sliced for dinner that evening. The flavor profile is completely different. It ranges from the supermarket tomato with no taste and somewhat mealy texture to a tart, slightly sweet, juicy garden grown tomato. Today I’d like to discuss with you not only the amazing taste benefits of garden-grown vegetables, but also the amazing health benefits of eating veggies from your garden. I’ve selected 7 garden vegetables to tell you about that have dramatic health benefits. Everyone should be eating more of these! Green beans—Green beans are much lower in carbohydrate than their very close relatives in the dried bean category (including navy, pinto, and black beans). A one-cup serving of cooked green beans will provide about 45 calories and 10 grams of carbs. By contrast, one cup of cooked black beans will provide about 225 calories and 40 grams of carbs. Green beans qualify as an important source of dietary fiber as well as a source of key minerals like copper, magnesium, and iron. Tomatoes—Tomatoes are loaded with antioxidant benefits. They provide an excellent amount of vitamin C and beta-carotene; a very good amount of the mineral manganese; and a good amount of vitamin E. Looking for phytonutrients to help improve your health? Tomatoes are a fabulous source! Peppers—The highest amount of Vitamin C in a bell pepper is concentrated in the red variety. Red bell peppers contain several phytochemicals and carotenoids, particularly beta-carotene, that lavish you with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. The capsaicin in bell peppers also has multiple health benefits. Zucchini—As an outstanding source of manganese and vitamin C, zucchini is an outstanding source of dietary fiber, and is also an excellent source of vitamin A, magnesium, folate, potassium, copper, and phosphorus. It is an effective food to promote weight loss as it is extremely low in calories but high in fiber and water content, which gives you the feeling of being full. Yellow Squash—Summer squash is a rich source of Vitamin A and C, magnesium, fiber, folate, riboflavin, phosphorus, potassium, and Vitamin B6. In addition, it is high in manganese, a mineral that helps the body process fats, carbohydrates, and glucose. A nutrition powerhouse! Southern Peas—Not only are they a good source of fiber, but they also contains a rich supply of protein, magnesium, folate and B vitamins. Page 18 July 2017

To learn more about the amazing healing power of real food, you can find a complete discussion of the anti-inflammatory lifestyle in her book Eat Well to Be Well. Jan and her husband, Bruce, are active members of the Bulverde Community Garden, where this year they are growing Southern peas, tomatoes, carrots, and squash. The Bulverde Community Garden Committee would like to thank Bob Fly, owner of GEO SOURCE for his generous donation of garden soil. Also, a big thank you goes out to the Humanitarian Club of Smithson Valley High School for their continued support and assistance at the Garden. We look forward to their volunteer efforts next school year.

If you or your business or SCHOOL would like to secure a plot (at no cost), please contact Joanne Hall at jothall@gvtc.com. Donations gladly accepted. Also, interested persons are invited to attend the Bulverde Community Garden Committee meeting on the second Monday of the month at 5:15pm at the Bulverde Spring Branch Activity Center.

Roadside Pet Adoptions: Take a Moment to Consider… It seems like it’s raining kittens and puppies lately. Spring always brings new life, and this is true for cats and dogs as well. In fact, you’ll hear many rescue groups—Animal Rescue Connections included—refer to this as kitten season or puppy season. During spring and summer, you’ll see many advertisements or people along the side of the road offering puppies or kittens for sale or for free. Although we don’t want these animals to go homeless or to interfere with well-meaning people trying to find home for these animals, we would like you to consider adopting from a shelter or rescue organization. Why adopt from these organizations rather than through other means? Animals adopted through rescue groups have had basic veterinary care, have been spayed/neutered, and have received initial vaccinations. Often, these animals also already have been microchipped. This saves you, the adopter, some time and expense getting these things done and might save you some heartbreak should something be

wrong with that cute puppy or kitten that the people adopting out the animal are unaware of. Rescue organizations also can help match the right personality animal with your family. Because we often have had the animal for a few weeks, we know its personality and can guide you toward the little one that will fit with your family. Finally, by adopting through a rescue group, you make room for another puppy or kitten to take its place and get that same veterinary care before its adoption. Adopting through a rescue organization saves two lives—the one you take home and the one you make room for.

A Tail Tail Event! A Benefit for Animal Rescue Connections Please join the fun while helping this wonderful animal rescue organization! Smithson Valley High Navy JROTC Unit Named Best in U.S. Smithson Valley High School’s Navy JROTC Unit has been named the top program in the United States for the 2016–2017 school year by the Commander, Naval Service Training Command. SVHS was first named the top Unit in Area 10, which encompasses most of Texas. That award put the Rangers in the running for the Navy League’s Best in the Nation award against the other 10 Areas in the U.S.

Quidachay and several of his top Navy JROTC student officers will receive the Navy League’s Best in the Nation award at a Comal ISD School Board Meeting at the district’s Support Services Building in New Braunfels later this summer. A representative from the U.S. Navy League will be at the meeting to present the award.

“We were very proud to receive this honor, especially our cadets, said SVHS instructor Commander Vince Quidachay. “The Navy League’s Best in the Nation award is the most prestigious honor a Navy JROTC Unit can receive. We couldn’t have accomplished this without the hard work of our cadets, their parents, and my fellow SVHS instructors Chief Petty Officer Daniel Hansen and Lieutenant Rolando Gonzalez. The accomplishment is based on many things including: unit participation in drill competitions, hosting drill competitions, community service hours, school support, academic performance by cadets, physical fitness, college campus visits and many other activities.
