A few words from the editor..... Dog Living Magazine was envisioned back in 2006 with the goal of creating a community of dog lovers who believe dogs are family. The first issue was published in November of that same year, inspired by my two dogs OIlie and August. I had no idea what I was doing, but gosh darn I was passionate about it! The response to the magazine was overwhelming and it was so amazing to see so many people come together over a shared love of dogs. In 2012 life pulled me elsewhere and I could no longer spend the time needed to publish the print magazine, but Dog Living remained alive and well online and via social media. Fast forward to 2017 when an acquaintance, and now, good friend, persuaded me to give a printed publication another try. The Dog Living Directory is the result of that collaboration and I couldn’t be happier. She worked her “tail” off and I could not have put this together without her. Thanks Rebecca! As originally intended, through the Dog Living Directory we hope to encourage responsible pet ownership and provide useful and practical information for Cape Fear dog parents who don’t just want to “have a dog”, they want to live life to the fullest with their dogs! Those of you who remember “Ollie’s Corner” know that Ollie was a big part of Dog Living Magazine. He passed away in 2015 but will always be my original “Assistant Editor.” We hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed putting it together. As always, we appreciate you picking up this Dog Living publication and we welcome your thoughts, comments, and suggestions. Woofs and Wags,

Suzanne Jalot Editor

Dog-Friendly Dining Looking for a great place to dine with your best 4-legged friend? We rounded up a few of the most dog-friendly restaurants in the area.

“Bone” apetit! South Beach Grill

100 S. Lumina Avenue, Wrightsville Beach www.southbeachgrillwb.com If you’re looking for a patio with a view, South Beach Grill is your spot. The restaurant overlooks Banks Channel and if you’re coming by boat, public docks are right across the street. They describe their menu as “Southern inspired, locally sourced, sea and land.” We describe their menu as delicious!

P.T.’s Olde Fashioned Grille

Monkey Junction, Military Cutoff, and Porters Neck www.ptsgrille.com Many of the P.T.’s Olde Fashioned Grille locations in the area welcome your furry companion. Their certified Angus Beef burgers are never frozen and their fries are fresh cut daily. There’s a reason P.T.’s has won “Best Burger” numerous times! This is a great spot for a casual meal and they can even cook up a burger patty for your pooch as an “add on” to your meal. 6 Spring 2018 Dog Living Directory: Cape Fear

Halligans Public House

3317 Masonboro Loop Road, Wilmington www.halligansnc.com Halligans Public House is an Irish pub with an American twist and is a perfect spot to grab a reasonably priced lunch or dinner with your dog. The large, covered patio at their Masonboro Loop Road location will accommodate dogs of all sizes! The Reuben is their house specialty but they also serve an assortment of other sandwiches along with burgers, salads, and large entrees.

Dirty South Bar & Grill

718 S. Anderson Blvd., Topsail Beach www.dirtysouthbarandgrill.com Talk about a fun spot and a doggy paradise! You’ll find dog dishes with fresh water outside, along with a basket of tennis balls, and fresh treats. Their menu offers an assortment of burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs, as well as some tasty appetizers. Live bands play outside on the patio area during the spring and summer months.

Please note due to health code dogs are only allowed in the outdoor areas of restaurants. Check out some more restaurants with dog-friendly patios on pages 18, 24, and 27. www.doglivingmagazine.com 7

Diningwith

Fido

It’s a refreshing experience to be able to dine outside with your best canine friend. Due to health regulations, only service dogs are allowed inside restaurants. Luckily, there are many restaurants in the Cape Fear area who will cater to both you and your furry best friend. A pleasant meal is easily ruined by an unruly canine diner. Be realistic about your dog’s ability to remain obedient in a public dining situation. If you know your dog might be a problem, leave him or her at home. There are plenty of other activities you can both be involved in.

Quick Tips

Don’t let your dog eat from your plate. Bring a water bowl and treats for your dog. Know your dog’s limitations. If he can’t sit still for thirty minutes or if you know he constantly lunges at strangers, maybe take-out food is best. Always pay attention to what your dog is doing! Keep your dog on a leash at all times. Tee off to help the animals of Pender County Humane Society!

Get FIT with Your Pup! Why should getting in shape be limited to the two-legged members of a household? Healthy Paws Pet Insurance has identified ways pet owners can incorporate their furry friends into their fitness routine in the new year. Wall Sits + Fetch Lean with your back against the wall with your feet shoulder width apart, then slowly slide down the wall until your knees are at a 90-degree angle. You should feel the burn in your upper thighs, not your knees. Then, throw a ball for your dog to retrieve! Stay in the wall sit position for 20 to 60 seconds – depending on your strength – throwing it as many times as needed. Rest for 30 seconds between sets of three. Curtsy Lunge + Shake Practice your pup’s manners with the curtsy lunge! Step your right foot back and behind your left hip, then repeat on the other side; left foot behind right hip. As you step back, offer your hand to your dog and say the “shake” command. This workout move targets the glutes and hip flexors! Provide positive reinforcement after each set of 10 lunges and a belly rub after all three sets. Planks + Wait Lying on your stomach, push yourself onto your toes and forearms. Focus on keeping your back flat and your head up, engaging your abdominal muscles for full benefits. Before you assume the position, place a treat on your dog’s paw or nose give the command “wait.” Don’t worry about your dog – planks are harder than they look! Last as long as you can in the plank position, then release your patient pup. Jump Squats (For Both!) With feet slightly more than shoulder width apart, squat down and come up into the air. Jump high enough that your legs are fully extended! Bring Fido into the equation with a treat in hand. Every time you jump, have your pup jump too. Depending on your activity level, do 10 to 20 jump squats per set, with three sets total. Healthy Paws and partners strongly recommend that you should consult your physician before beginning any exercise program, as well as your veterinarian if you’ll be incorporating your dog in any aerobic activity. When participating in any exercise or exercise program, there is the possibility of physical injury. If you engage in this exercise or exercise program, you agree that you do so at your own risk and are voluntarily participating in these activities.

Scoop it up! Are you one of those courteous and responsible pet owners who never leaves the house without a baggie? Or do you simply pretend not to notice that huge pile your dog just left behind? According to statistics, only half of dog owners are scoopers, and that’s a shame. There are more than 70,000 dogs in New Hanover County alone and that amounts to more than 10,000 pounds of poop per day. It all has to go somewhere! Not only is it unsightly, it’s a health hazard. Let’s change those statistics and strive to be responsible pet owners who pick up the poop!

Ask August Dear August, I am the coolest little mutt you’ll ever meet and I adore my dad. However, I think he’s using me to pick up chicks! Sure, I love it when they ‘ooh’ and ‘ahh’ over me, but isn’t that like using me as bait? Roscoe Wilmington Dear Roscoe, I think this happens a lot. And that’s okay. It might be a little coy, but your dad obviously loves you and realizes that being your dad comes with some fringe benefits. Namely, that ability to draw women near and far. Female humans might never notice your dad, but they are suckers for cute canines. Enjoy it. But if he decides to bring one home, make sure she doesn’t take over your side of the bed. Dear August, Our two big labs love to sleep in bed with me and my husband. The only problem is they end up hogging the bed and my husband gets fed up and goes out to sleep on the couch each night. He says they should sleep on the floor. I think there’s got to be a way we could all sleep in harmony. What do you suggest? Cindy Leland Dear Cindy, Buy a bigger bed.

7 Tips

for Having A Great Yard for Your Pet this

Spring

Here are some tips to help you get your yard ready for springtime fun from Lucky the TurfMutt, a rescue dog who pays it forward by helping children and families take care of green spaces. Tune up your turfgrass. A sturdy grass lawn can take the pounding and activity of an active pooch. After a winter in dormancy, your lawn will be moving back into a growth phase as the weather heats up. Begin mowing as soon as your lawn needs it. Create a dog-friendly backyard. Map out your yard with your dog in mind. Soft foliage, sturdy turfgrass, smooth stones, and dog toys can help your pet feel at home. Add a water station so your pet can hydrate after some time playing. A fun water feature can help your pooch cool off when it’s hot. Plan for fun. Set up an area for your dog to dig, such as a digging box or digging bed. Add chew toys in the dirt (leave one poking out) to help your dog get the idea. Use plants to give your dog a sense of boundaries. Place plants close together in areas you want to designate as off-limits and train your dog to avoid them. Leave open areas for your dog to run and play in (and accept that that is what your dog will do). Avoid toxic plants. Dogs do not naturally avoid plants that are toxic to them and many will eat plants that are not safe for consumption. A few common toxic plants for dogs are: carnations, chrysanthemums, daffodils, hostas, ivy, lilies, morning glories, tomatoes, and tulips. Eliminate hazards. Some paved or sandy surfaces may get too hot for your pet to walk on comfortably. Tiny pebbles, thorns, or gravel can get caught in paws. Ensure your pet’s main play area includes grass. Check your fence. A fence is an important safety feature for your pet. Make sure your fence is solid and do any needed repairs. Pay attention to your gate and be sure locks are working properly. Many dogs will patrol the edges of the yard and make paths near the fence line. Plan for these predictable paths in your yard and if you find them unsightly, you can add a gentle stone or mulch path. If you use an invisible fence, make sure it is properly working and that your pet knows the boundaries. Have a Pet-Safe 4th of July! How does your pet celebrate Independence Day? While some pets may enjoy the commotion of the Fourth, the backyard barbecues and plentiful fireworks can be stressful and hazardous. Trupanion receives more anxiety-related claims in July than any other month of the year. Here are tips from Trupanion veterinarian, Dr. Denise Petryk, to keep your pet safe and stress-free for the Fourth of July: Provide a safe space during the celebrations. Your pet will feel most secure in a familiar, safe environment. This could be a bedroom, a crate, or a favorite gated-off area where your pet spends a lot of their time. Use white noise to drown out the sound of fireworks. You can leave the television or radio on, or just turn on a fan in the room to help sound-sensitive pets get through the evening. Talk to your vet about anti-anxiety tools and training. There are many products available to help decrease anxiety—from body wraps to edible treats. There are also methods available to help condition your pet to the noise over time. Keep identification on your pet at all times. Even if you follow all of these tips, your stressed pet may find a way to get out of the house. Always keep an ID on your pet with updated information and consider microchipping your pet just in case their collar or harness slips off. Handcrafted treats made fresh with human-grade ingredients.

The Doggy Summer Bucket List Take a Ferry Ride Who doesn’t love a good boat ride? Leashed dogs are allowed on all outside areas of the SouthportFort Fisher Ferry. If you’re on the Fort Fisher side take a quick trip and stroll through downtown Southport. If you’re on the Southport side, head into Carolina Beach for some dog-friendly fun.

Enjoy Live Music The WECT Sounds of Summer Concert Series is dog-friendly and FREE! Every Thursday from June 14 through August 2 enjoy live music at Wrightsville Beach Park. Bring your beach blanket and pack a picnic. Coolers are welcome but alcohol is not allowed in the park. Each show begins at 6:30pm.

Visit a Brewery

The Cape Fear area is FULL of amazing breweries that are totally cool with you bringing your pup inside for a brew. Some of our faves include Broomtail Craft Brewery, The Sour Barn, Waterline Brewery, and Flytrap Brewing.

Have an SUP Adventure Your dog will have a blast cruising the intracoastal waterway on a stand up paddleboard. If you don’t have your own, there are plenty of places to rent one and we have it on good authority that Wrightsville Beach SUP will gladly allow your dog on their boards. Check them out at www.wrightsvillesup.com. www.doglivingmagazine.com 29
