A few words from the editor.....

6 Where have the last six months gone?! That’s a long time to go between issues but the summer seems to have just flown by. But the end of summer means dogs are allowed back on the beaches with less restrictions and less crowds! Now is the time to get out and enjoy the Cape Fear area and all it has to offer. Your pup is welcome in so many places including restaurants (yes, it’s still warm enough to dine outside1), bars, breweries, shops, and so much more.

Canine Cancer Resources No pet parent wants to hear it, but cancer is being diagnosed in dogs in alarming numbers these days. Dog Living’s own August was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma (bone cancer) over two years ago. It was a devastating diagnosis and without treatment, the survival rate was low. One month? Two months? We were fortunate to find the resources to get treatment and give August the best chance at survival. A leg amputation, four rounds of chemo, and thousands of dollars later, August is miraculously still with us. Veterinary bills in the thousands are just not feasible for some families. Fortunately there are organizations for pet parents to turn to when they need a helping hand. NC Veterinary Medical Foundation www.cvm.ncsu.edu

Super Tips

for Traveling with your Dog

A new national survey from Super 8 by Wyndham revealed that 76% of adults stated dogs as the best road trip companion. Super 8 - the world’s largest economy hotel brand and trusted roadside companion - shares eight super road trip tips to bring your fur babies along for the adventure.

1

Pack the essentials: water bowl, food, medication, updated tags, collar, leash, vaccination records, kennel, bed and blankets, and favorite toys.

2 Bring a doggy car seat for their safety and yours. 3 Teaching your dog to eliminate on cue will speed up potty breaks and

help your dog go to the bathroom in new, unfamiliar places.

4

Research local vets and have the contact information for nearby vet clinics saved.

5 Take a test drive and see how your pup reacts to being on the road. 6 Plan your route and schedule a break every four hours. 7 Don’t feed your pet before a drive: Instead, try feeding your furry

friend 3-4 hours before.

8 And most importantly, check if your destination is pet friendly. Wellknown road side chains like Super 8 hotels have flexible pet policies.

Ask August Dear August, Why don’t humans sniff each others’ butts? Max Southport Dear Max, Humans are so weird, aren’t they? We sniff butts because it tells us all we need to know about each other (sex, health, temperament, etc.). Humans seem to gather that data in other ways. I have heard my mom use the term “brown noser” in reference to a human, so there ARE humans out there who like a good butt sniff.

Dear August, Why won’t people pick up after their pets?! Allison Hampstead Dear Allison, Laziness? Lack of education? Or maybe they are just plain inconsiderate? You know, the same type of people who will just toss their cigarette butt on the ground? My advice is to call them out if you see it. Offer them a bag. Maybe they are truly oblivious. Either way, doggy karma is a, um, a female dog and I’m sure there’s a big pile of poo waiting for them to step in one day.

Is it normal for my dog to eat grass? Have you seen your dog eat grass? Is this a sign that something is wrong? Or is this completely normal?

Fun, healthy dog cookies & treats Handmade collars, leashes & toys Unique pet themed home decor & gifts Follow us on Facebook for specials and events!

Both answers could be right. Some dogs just love the taste of grass and like cows in a pasture, they will graze. The texture may also be appealing to your dog. But there are times when eating grass is a sign of an upset tummy. If your dog is displaying other symptoms such as vomiting, lethargy, and/or diarrhea, AND eating grass, then you should consult with your veterinarian. If your pet is healthy, and enjoys an occasional nibble, there is probably nothing to worry about. However don’t let your dog graze where there might be lawn chemicals or fertilizer applied, as those can be poisonous.

This little gem of a park offers up unexpected treats that both you and your dog will love. A walk on the 920 foot boardwalk provides beautiful views of our intracoastal landscape and a chance to see local wildlife and sea critters in their element. Bring your camera and some friends and make some memories. With a picnic shelter, playground, basketball court, water fountain and a bathroom the humans in your group might have as much fun as your pup! 26 Fall/Winter 2018

The Doggy Fall Bucket List Take A Hike Fall is the perfect time to explore the great outdoors! Carolina Beach State Park is one of our local favorites but there are plenty of other walking and hiking trails for all skill levels listed right here in this guide!

Road Trip

There are so many fun places to go within a few hours or less of the Cape Fear region! Head north and within two hours you can explore the shops and trails of downtown Beaufort and then head out to Fort Macon. Head south and Myrtle Beach has some excellent dog parks and trails.

Go Shopping The Cape Fear area is full of dog-friendly shopping destinations. The Cotton Exchange in downtown Wilmington is a perfect way to hit multiple dog-friendly stores in one spot. Make sure you stop by Java Dog and order a “Puppuccino”! If you’re in Topsail Beach don’t miss South End Outfitters for some “pawsome” clothing and gear. And if you’re getting ready for your next race, bring your dog to Omega Sports in Hanover Center to help pick out your new running gear.

Teach an Old Dog a New Trick Yes, it’s possible! Set a goal of teaching your pup a new command or new trick this month. Need some inspiration? Check out easy tricks to teach at www.doglivingmagazine.com. www.doglivingmagazine.com 29
