“The Ship’s Horn Blows”
The only “Who’s Who” guide to Texas’ most important antiques event

SHOW DAILY SEPTEMBER 2019
I have wanted to feature this theme for the longest time, and now with a little help from my friends, this fall edition is all about aucRoberto’s Ship has come in tions, auctioneering, and a guide to where they are happening here in the show areas and throughout Texas. Auctions have been around since Biblical times and for many different industries. We know all of that, but in our business it’s almost unavoidable and indispensable. If you are an inexperienced newcomer, auctions can make your skin crawl with excitement or even intimidate you when the bidding frenzy heats up. The savvy bidders know when to stop and when to put the pressure on. And the auctioneer knows almost immediately when you’re a real player or a beginner, and you will be taunted to spend more than you planned. So, buyer beware! As a long-time auction goer, I enjoy them tremendously …the exhilaration and fun…the blood pressure at break-speed numbers tells me when I need to take a “chill pill.” But for many, it’s like a drug--an addiction and a must--if you want to bring home inventory for the shop. So, you shrewd antiquers, be advised that there’s a new kid on the block: his name is Wesley Beard (Page 13). He’s an old ham in this business and very well-known and admired by those in the know. Since just a kid, this gentleman has developed a passion for his trade as well as other causes that have pegged him as a champion for human rights and an activist for human justice. In one fell swoop, Beard has launched a new venue and an auction house, which happens to be called The Venue. Actually, it’s the old place known as the Old Henry Farm just north of Round Top square. Beard will be having some wonderful auctions locally, in addition to his regular auction house in Jacksonville, Texas. Mark your calendars! And his new endeavor, The Venue, promises to be one that will raise the bar in the standard of customer service amenities, food service, and “one of the better shopping experiences“ in the area, according to Beard. Such was the enthusiasm for Beard’s new launch, that we were inclined to commission surrealist

Also, we are doing a reprise of some other antiques auctioneers who are well-known in our Texas Antiques Week Community, including my dear and wonderful friend from since I was just a mere mortal in the 80s buying up her entire auction hall! Hehe just kidding! Vikki Vines, a rare first as a women auctioneer goes, could tell of adventures we have shared back in the olden days. The nefarious shenanigans of smuggling fine continental furniture into Mexico…we’ll reserve those tales for my memoirs. No arrests reported however! much anymore, and besides--as you know--I have “FORETOLD” of my eminent departure: retirement, separation from Show Daily. So officially this is my last edition. From time to time, I know I will be asked to lend a hand, and of course I will. I don’t mind taking out the trash, making sandwiches for staff and guests. But most of the time, I hope to be in my shack somewhere on a Pacific Beach. I love to fish and then cook it. The steadfast staff lead by wonder-woman Claudia and Laurie, Alex, Joe, and the never-ending enthusiasm of my son Rob, Jr. will continue to put Show Daily together with zest and professionalism, business as usual. Please give them the same support and encouragement as you always have. After putting well over a halfmillion Show Dailys in your hands, I believe we have accomplished our goal. I know that Suzy was very proud as she cracked open each new issue for the first time and smelled the ink and smiled.

Auction Action Adds to the Excitement at The Venue by Laurie Krupala

oing…Going…GONE are the days of active live auction barns around the country, thanks to online sites like Ebay, Bonanza, and others. But here in Texas, auctioneering is still a big business for those who want to find the real deal--the stuff you can’t see on a gif, a tiff, or a jpeg. Texas, and the Round Top/Warrenton area specifically, is where the heavy hitters know the thrill of the auctioneer’s cadence rising, the suspense of the nod across the room, and the finality of the gavel pound.

Finding a Landing Spot by Lou Christine
T
he Cole Building’s Nancy Buzza, who does business as “Look What I Found,” mans the modest booth and display cases while dealing in precious stones. Buzza looks back a bit as she basks under the fluorescent lights inside the Cole Building. The energetic lady who stems from Atlanta likes to recall when she first came to the Cole Building 13 years ago. As Nancy tells it, God didn’t create her--nor was Nancy born for--life in the fields when it came to a marketing extravaganza. She tried it, and was a good trooper, but she became toasted by the searing heat, soaked by torrential rains that flooded and muddied everything, and whipped by the dust and spring winds that tore the tents apart. When she showed in Texas, especially at this show, she didn’t need Al Gore to tell her about “climate change.” Other dealer neighbors who showcased their more fragile finery were also exhausted from dealing with the elements. Dealers cringed to hear the crashing sounds of ceramic Dalton Originals being blown off shelves or witnessing a rain-storm riptide gushing through somebody’s tent who sells imported vintage carpets. When the word got out that the Cole’s were taking applications, Buzza was one of the first in line. “The Cole Building has been a Godsend, especially for those dealers who carry less hardy merchandise.” Buzza adds, “Topping
off, there’s air-conditioning, clean restrooms, and hot running water! The Cole show has been a hit since the very first day Mr. Cole opened the door and I’ve met many quality dealers here at Cole’s who also have become long-time friends.” “You know there’s still a waiting list of dealers who want to show at Cole’s while escaping the elements,” affirmed Buzza, sounding very satisfied with the move she made 13 years ago. Buzza also sees the glass “half full,” with the present aim to lure in new customers to the Cole Building. The new blood, and some shoppers, are a bit green when it comes to purchasing long-term items with quality. Buzza sees other perks for younger shoppers at Cole’s: they could learn about antiques and collectables, considering the wealth of knowledge from those who market there. Many of today’s dealers, including Buzza, acknowledge how the show has expanded and spread out. Seeing the traffic through a shopper’s eyes, Buzza offers, “The best way to see the show, especially if one is on limited time, is to start in Warrenton, on Route 237 and start working your way north.” While Buzza is a nice lady and quality dealer who roots for everybody, she is also keenly aware that those who travel north will end up truly enjoying a pit stop at the Cole Building.

ou’re the shopper! I’m the dealer.
by Lou Christine
You’re here for Antiques Week. You’re at my booth and have been admiring that Browning, semi-automatic, pump action shot gun. You’ve coveted that model for years, yet something’s holding you back--and you’re hedging. I’ve given you quite a sales pitch, boasting about the mint condition of the vintage piece, and how this weapon is widely soughtafter by gun collectors. I’ve given you my rock bottom price. You don’t flinch. It becomes an awkward Mexican standoff. Now there’s another shopper, in a nearby tent, and she might be your significant other. I’m another dealer, and the wife just can’t get over that stunning porcelain vase. She lips aloud (to grumpy you, who’d rather be watching major league baseball back in your air-conditioned den) as she continues marveling about the vase’s vibrant colors and how it’s an exact replica of a treasured piece mom used to have in her China closet when growing up. I’m the dealer. My experience screams out how she wants it! I

don’t have to say another word. She DISTINCTION even voices that she thinks the price is more than a fair. Ole you, rather than making her day, turns into that dreaded “kill joy” crassly yapping, “Where ya gonna put it? We don’t need no more stuff,” translating to, “We ain’t gonna get it no matter what!” the nail in the coffin and the tyrannical “kiss of death” takes the life out of a sale. These moments take place hundreds of times a day during the show. They are moments that tear the heart out of dealers, pretty much the same as when Diane Pazdunkwicz mailed me that Dear John letter back when I was in the Army. Polite and professional dealers swallow hard and might even take a bottom-of-the-ninth-two-out-swing for the fences, but likely will strike out. Then, there’s the pushy, take-no-prisoner types, pressing harder, saying things a buyer would prefer just to not hear another deal killer. With the rejection, the friendly face of the anticipating dealer morphs into a sour puss. continued on page 18

More than likely, the next day, the shot-gun shopper is going to bore some co-working sap to death by harping on about how he wishes he would have bought that gun. Maybe even bragging about what a great deal he negotiated.
The sap of a co-worker can’t help but say, “Well, why didn’t you get it?” While Ruth, the wife of grumpy Fred, was already on the phone that night from their Fredricksburg ranch, praying to her sister, Kate, about the vase and how it reminded her of mother’s. Recounting how cheapskate Fred wouldn’t spring for the impressive replica vase. Turning back the clock, the shot-gun guy and our Ruth, who just loved that vase, would buy them today on the spot if they could do it all over again. But they can’t because the dealers are all packed up and went back to who knows where. And even when reconsidering it, grumpy Fred would take a chance to do it again to make our Ruth happy, but he didn’t and can’t.
www.showdailymagazine.com
that makes for fruitful anticipation…then you leave‘em empty! Oh, I am well aware of free will and nobody got to buy nothin’. But, c’mon, Vern, you got that big tax break not so long ago. You aren’t going to get whacked at tax time. Dude, you’ve got three yaks on your 50 acres in Washington County, and you still get the federal government ranch subsidy. The kids are gone and have graduated college, and that 401K never looked fatter. You’re not going to live forever and likely you’ll never see the Cowboys win another Super Bowl! So c’mon, pony up! Make somebody’s day. If you see something, spring a little, be an all-star. Come out here, spread it around, and make the dealer and Ruth’s Day!
The dealer who ferreted out those pieces, some time back, bargained on the price, polished and readied those pieces for market, yet and sadly came up empty when it came to closing those sales. It’s a crying shame at times when people don’t buy what they really want. Every salesperson worth their salt has searched their souls on how to overcome rejection, because in the mind of every genuine dealer, all sales are paramount--a matter of survival. Now you’re going to hate me! What’s the matter with you? You’re at a show. You see items you really like. You might even bully to get your price and you raise the dealer’s hopes

Pennsylvania transplant, Jeff Yuengling of Yuengling Beer fame, is the ringmaster at The Warrenton Feed Store. Yuengling has been showing in these parts for close to 20 years and took over the store about 8-9 years ago…if we’re counting. Under the Yuengling’s tin-roof and Warrenton Feed Store banner, shoppers will find a tight-knit -group of seasoned dealers, recruited and synergized by their owner. One of them is Susan Small, from Houston, whose trade name is Multiplicity. Small calls her twice-a-year ventures to Warrenton “a vacation” as she takes a time out from her same-name Avenue A gift store in Katy, and her jewelry-making artists’ studio a few doors down.
Another friend in the Warrenton Feed Store is Gay Lange, all the way from the Dakotas. Lange is an authorized dealer of Tuning Element, natural, wearable pain relievers in the form of bracelets, necklaces and anklets. Lange says they utilize life enhancement technology to tune into the body’s bio-natural frequency, miraculously easing or even eliminating pain. Anklets are even available for pets and work animals. Lange said she wouldn’t have believed it herself, but over seven years ago she tried Tuning Element and is a now disciple, walking proof of how Tuning Element provides relief. Products made from surgical stainless steel, sterling, or even gold, set off varied strengths. Lange does confess the tuned pain eliminator works on most pain but perhaps not for a broken heart!

Joining the team are Shelli and Curtis Carpenter, who also showcase Southwest type adornments, custom made up gems and stones procured in stony Tuscan fitted into unique original settings. Additional finds stem from places like Albuquerque and Gallop. The headquarters for Blue Quail Designs by Suzanne is a massive 4,000 square foot retail outlet in Kingsville at 205 E. Kleberg Ave. We can’t leave out the easy-going owner, Yuengling, who is one of the most respected operators at the show. Is it because of his cohesive team of high-quality dealers and shiny studs at the Warrenton Feed Store? Or maybe because he shares a number of cases of his world-famous Yuengling Beer from Pottstown, Pennsylvania—America’s oldest commercial brewery beers still operated by elements of the family. Besides the suds appreciated by all, Yuengling too shows off premium glass and iron from the Keystone state along with fine Tiffany. So, if a local shows you the way to the Warrenton Feed Store, right across from the fire station, go say hi to Jeff. Maybe he’ll offer you a beer.

You’ve Reached The Promised Land by Lou Christine
s
omewhere along the line we’ve been told there is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. For the optimist, the advent of a serendipitous event is always on the horizon. They have visions of discovering and being encompassed in some nirvana, or an Avalon, Camelot, or even Heaven. Then, there’s always the outside chance of hitting The Power Ball. Yet if YOU’RE one of those sorts who might be coined as a hopeless collector (or a hoarder) who has cherished certain nothings since you first said, “I want!”--or perhaps you’ve been considered a weirdo ‘cause you’re attracted to door knobs or old gas jets—Baby, you’s in Paradise! You’ve made it to what might be the world’s greatest gathering of everything under the sun from dented entire front-ends of old Caddies from the ‘50s, bumpers and all, to rusty, long-ago abandoned screwdrivers! This here Warrenton-Round Top extravaganza has got it all, yet at the same time, it’s simply ridiculous. One might ask, “Where does all this junk come from,” or “Who buys all this stuff?” Yet the sea of stuff washes in from around the world, as does the convoy of buyers who, like you, might come out here to trawl twice a year. For oddball collectors it’s a pure feed! Reckoning there’s SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319
junkers-and-collectors-gold in them there hills, similar to the old land rushes that Edna Ferber wrote about in Oklahoma, brings creatures of habit to seek short-lived opportunities. But don’t blink! Because that splintered bench will be claimed. For the hordes of seekers: seekers of the tattered and bruised, seekers of those rusty meal porch gliders, hand-pushed lawn mowers, rusty nails, and old lightbulb sockets, there is more likely to be a pot of rusty gold at the end of this rusty rainbow here in the heart of Texas. The chipped porcelain, wartime memorabilia, naked doll babies from yesteryear, weathered barn wood, and used grain bags in the mind of the beholder are the pay-off as tangible pots of junker gold. Those roaming the fields, tents, out-buildings, and edifices, are often in search of sentimentality items that have them peering into the rear mirror of life when times were simpler. Perhaps illustrated best by famed writer, Henry Miller: “The most familiar things, objects which I had gazed at all my life, now became an unending source of wonder, and with the wonder, of course, affection. A tea pot, an old hammer, or chipped cup, whatever came to hand I looked upon as if I had never seen it before. I hadn’t, of CELL: 979-250-1494

English born and bred, he uses the vast wealth of residential and industrial buildings in the UK which are today being demolished to save the precious timbers and give them a new lease of life. The majority of these buildings are over 150 years old. They then use the beautiful reclaimed timbers at the McLaren’s workshop in England to handcraft tables and kitchen islands to ensure no two pieces are ever the same and the beauty of the patina of the wood shines through. Tables can be crafted from 6ft to 16ft with a wide variety of bases and the kitchen islands again are extremely versatile work stations or islands in wood and/or metal. CELL: 979-250-1494

Sean first discovered India over 30 years ago and it is seeped in British history as it was part of the British Empire from 1600 to 1947. The pieces from Western India are discovered in the palaces of the Raj’s who were the aristocracy and were traditionally crafted with British heritage. The beauty of the country of India reflects in all of the items they find, from Palace doors, to giant cooking pots, to beautifully carved architectural pieces dating back to the 17th century. For this Fall Show the McLaren’s have brought in all of the above and more with an entire garden collection from planters, to cast iron tables, and benches. You’ll enjoy everyday complimentary drinks on board the airconditioned London Double Decker Bus. For trade and interior designs, they also offer a very competitive trade program.

Auction Tips by Eduardo Chavez
H
ow many times have you seen a high-class auction played out on television or a big theater screen where the buyer is willing to pay a fortune for an item that he has just “gotta have”? Welcome to the real world-- a place where most of us can’t, or are unwilling, to purchase a piece at auction at any cost. Guadalajara auctioneer Eduardo “The Magician” Chavez offers some sound tips on buying right at auction, even if you “gotta have it”. 1. DON’T MISS THOSE AUCTION PREVIEWS Get as much information as possible on the pieces you’re interested in before the auction begins. This includes artist’s name and background, the age of the piece, its condition and the item’s value outside of the auction house. Most auction houses do not accept returns, so make sure you know what you are buying. 2. DON’T FALL IN LOVE WITH IT Very few pieces are one-of-a-kind. Besides original piece of art, most items up for auction can be found elsewhere, so don’t over-pay. The chances that you’ll come across a similar item are good. It is advisable to pay more for one outstanding piece than to acquire several mediocre items for a low price. SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

3. DECIDE WHAT YOUR TOP PRICE IS Before the auction begins, jot down in the auction catalog, next to the lot number, the highest bid you are willing to offer for the items which interest you. Don’t surpass that figure! 4. WHERE TO SIT? While many people believe that the front rows are the prime location in an auction, this is not always the case. It is important to be able to see your potential competitors and identify them as either dealers or collectors. Collectors are usually willing to pay more than someone who is buying a piece for resale.
Auctions are fun but don’t go too crazy!
5. KEEP A CLEAR HEAD When a piece doesn’t command a lot of attention it is usually advisable to hold back bidding until the last second. If the piece hasn’t exceeded your predetermined high bid, make your offer just before bidding closes. However, it is a piece which is causing a good amount of excitement, your best chances of walking away with it are by making a high enough offer to stop your competitors in their tracks. Again, stick with your predetermined highest offer. 6. A TIP FOR VISITORS TO MEXICAN AUCTIONS Unlike U.S. style auctions, most Mexican auction houses offer free cocktails to their guests, and the drinks are not watered down! Be cautious about drinking too much, you may end up going home with pieces you never intended to purchase or pay too much for. Good luck, and enjoy!
The sound of a gavel always excites a crowd!

Texas Rose Cafe Take Over by Lou Christine
V
ickie Davis’ Texas Rose Show and Texas Rose Café in Round Top are trading places! After 15 years of housing many dealers, including her own eclectic collection of antiques, Davis is in the midst of transforming the interior of what was the main building into what she describes as a sensational eatery that will seat 125 plus. For years, Davis’ Texas Rose building whet the appetite of steady buyers, many being designers, decorators, and collectors. They offered an array of chandeliers, rare textiles and variable other fine finds. “We’ll be ridding the show of the last of the inventory this show, as we hope to have our restaurant open for the Spring Show,” said Davis. “I’ve worn two hats most of my adult life,” the affable Davis explained. Considered one of the pillars of antiques weeks when it comes to dealers and field owners, Davis’ Round Top presence stems from the iconic Emily Turney who Davis credits for her baptism, her apprenticeship, and her permanent link to the area. Davis began selling antiques during the infancy of the show, some 40 years ago. Like other area notables, she saw opportunity for growth and parlayed her earnings to become a field owner.
Yet Davis is also known for her other passion--cooking! Noted for providing sensational spreads at her receptions for her antique-shopping customers during the Texas Rose Show, Davis is transforming the Round Top venue into a restaurant. Local contractors, Round Top Builders, honchoed by Barney Reynolds, are providing the do-over. Davis boasts of a modern kitchen and spruced-up seating area with an attractive patio. The fare will include American, French, and Italian specialties. Off- show the restaurant will be open Wednesdays through Sundays. There will be a tequila and wine bar along with a bakery & deli. Every item will have that “Vickie Davis touch,” as the maven she is when it comes to synergizing flavors. Davis accrued her cooking expertise while working as a caterer, filling good-sized orders at the famous Alice’s Restaurant in Malibu, California. Alice’s, an upscale café, was founded by Bob Yuro, inspired by the Arlo Gunthrie’s song, “Alice’s Restaurant.” It became a faSHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319
vorite of Hollywood types. Davis, rather than hawking sideboards, decided to serve scrumptious food in Round Top to visitors and locals alike. “Our same crew will be on hand for this Autumn’s show,” Davis confirmed. She and her daughter, Heidi, will have the Texas Rose Café open all during this show, in addition to clearing out whatever inventory is left to make room for the restaurant. “Since we’ll have room on the property, we will be open to leasing show spaces for the Spring, so maybe some folks will come eat and see what we have to offer.” Davis said they would love to make space for local produce growers to market their goods on the property.

riginally introduced into Mexico during the first decade of the Spanish Conquest (15191530), early brands employed by the Spaniards simply denoted the animals’ place of origin. Today branding is more regulated, with marks indicating specific farms or owners. The great majority of horses brought into Mexico during and immediately after the Conquest came from breeding ranches established in the mid 1490’s, on the colonized islands of Cuba and Jamaica. According to brand marks appearing on animals depicted in the Lienzo de Tlaxcala Codex, and from other sources, we can see that most of the horses used during the attack on the Aztec capital, Tenochititlan (now Mexico City) were of Cuban origin. With Colonization came the rapid growth of breeding horses and livestock in Mexico, making the “place of origin” method of branding animals obsolete. On top of that, the new Mexican herds grazed on communal lands. Respective owners were experiencing increasing difficulty in distinguishing their herds from those of neighboring ranches.

SoHo McKinney DEALERS OF DISTINCTION

idden in the Historic Downtown McKinney square, where you can find plenty of Texan cowboy boots and sweet tea, lives a small part of France. SoHo McKinney, run by clothing designer Robin Cook, brings classic, minimalist French style to Texas. She can be found this show at BlueHills, Tent C. From “boyfriend shirts” (which cost about $165) to poncho-like capes made of military blankets (for about $875), owner-designer Robin Cook usually combines a handsome, artistic style into her personal-label womenswear line. When walking into her store in the heart of the downtown square in McKinney, one can’t help but feel transported. It combines a lush mix of Texas and Parisian ingenuity. Rustic furniture displays clothing items of a variety of shapes and textures. The clean and simple aesthetic with a classic twist is a breath of fresh air-it conjures feelings of a simpler era, when clothes weren’t tight and torn. According to Cook, her clothes are adored by women and her classic styles are evergreen. For the last 15 years she has been in the fashion designing industry, Cook says her regular trips to the fashion capital of the world, France, have been a constant source of inspiration for her designs. Cook visits France twice a year and stays for about a month on each visit. She brings back with her vintage fabrics and cloths that she makes into shirts, skirts, pants, and in some cases, overalls. Vogue magazine also welcomed the comeback – pointing out that modern women wearing overalls to the office can make quite an impression; an empowering statement that stands out.
“You can look good without a lot of effort if you have a few key pieces you can add to,“ Cook explained when asked about her style and philosophy. The products in her store lend credence to this belief. Each item could be effortlessly paired together to create a chic and timeless look. As a Dallas native and world traveler, Cook has a special place for McKinney in her heart. When asked why she chose Downtown McKinney for her business, Cook’s face lit up as she said, “People love to come here. They’re happy. It’s just good energy. There’s nowhere else like it.” Currently, Cook is featuring vintage work wear that she found in Paris last June, with soft but sturdy fabric of jackets, overalls, and aprons. Each piece comes in a deep shade of indigo that flatters just about anyone. Like most of the clothes in Cook’s shop, these are completely unique wardrobe staples that are difficult to find outside of Paris city limits. “It’s very soft and simple,“ Cook says about her latest merchandise. “You can tell that its well done, just by looking at the shape of it.” SoHo McKinney is located at 115 East Virginia Street, McKinney, TX 75069. Phone number 214-500-0756.
Each item is simple enough for everyday wear, but unique enough to turn heads while walking down the street, a rare combination in today’s fashion climate. Cook engages herself in woven fabrics: linen, cotton, wool, hemp and even paper. She’s especially fond of textiles that have already stood the test of time. It is evident that Cook values the concept of quality over quantity when it comes to clothes and fashion. SHOW DAILY mobile: 979-250-3319

Paw Paw’s Firehouse Café Inspired by Local Teen Hero by Kyla Goebel

ominoes shaking, the glow of neon signs on the wall, and the smell of barbecue floating through the air were my first experiences at Paw Paw’s Firehouse Café. I was greeted by a nearby table of regulars who were busy catching up on the latest news, just like every Thursday afternoon. Fire department t-shirts and tons of signatures belonging to service men and women written in permanent marker adorned the walls. I met Paw Paw himself, sitting at a table with his wife and daughter, and I began to discover how important this new adventure really was to him. Paw Paw, Larry Clack, has always appreciated the slowpaced life of Round Top after growing up in Houston. For 27 years, Clack and his wife owned property on highway 237, and spent their time working at the antique shows – renting spaces to vendors and selling his coveted barbecue. One day, a few businessmen approached him about selling his property. “The place wasn’t for sale,” he said, “but my wife and I talked about it and figured why not?”
loved ones that have been lost are amazing. Every name has a story to it. We care about the people that serve our country and our community and this is all a tribute to them,” explained Clack, “and Kelby was the inspiration for it all.” It’s clear to see that the Firehouse Café is more than just an escape from retirement for Larry Clack. “Everything we do here seems to have a meaning behind it,” Clack said with a smile. “That property was not for sale, but something told me it was the right thing to do.”

After selling his property, Clack spent more time on his barbecue. One day they noticed a small building for sale just a few miles down from where they had just sold their land. “I’ve always wanted to have a restaurant and my wife saw this building for sale. She said to go for it,” said Clack. After a few renovations and the addition of a kitchen, the restaurant was ready to go in July of 2018. Clack was ready to get the ball rolling. He happened to meet a new young friend, Kelby Jasinski, and was immediately in awe of him. “I met the boy for about 15 or 20 minutes and he made such an impression on me,” said Clack. Just two days later, Jasinski tragically lost his life. At only 15 years old, the teen had been an avid supporter of firefighters and was voted mascot for the Texas State Firefighters’ and Fire Marshals’ Association of Texas in 2014. Clack knew he wanted to name his new restaurant as a tribute to the impact the young boy had made on him and his community. Clack purchased shirts that were being sold in Jasinski’s memory and displayed one on the wall of his restaurant. The walls have since been filled with shirts from various fire and police departments. Visiting service men and women sign the walls of the building. Behind the register, the wall is filled with names of service men and women that have passed on as a tribute to their sacrifice. “The stories that we hear when families that come in with REMOTE OFFICE: 512-535-3705

The Godfather of Antique Rovers by Lou Christine
J
eremy Teel of Antique Rovers was offered a deal he just couldn’t refuse as a young boy, an opportunity to join his real Godfather, Charlie Ham, in his antiques and auctioneering business. Teel jumped at the proposal, not out of intimidation, but because he really liked his Godfather. Plus, after attending that first rabblerousing, competitive, winner-takes-all auction, he was all in! Jeremy Teel and Charlie Ham, both from Montalba, Texas, have linages that go back six-to-seven generations. Teel says when there was a shortage of playmates, or perhaps out of boredom, he began bumming around his Godfather’s antiques business near his home. El Patron, Ham, had been in the antique/auctioneering game all his life. Consider, Ham’s mom, Jane Ham, showed for years with Emily Turney at The Rifle Hall back in the ‘70s. The Godfather and Godson created a bond. The youngin’ eagerly absorbed a life’s worth of knowledge from the elder. The mentor-protégé relationship evolved into the dual business venture it is today--best described as a pal-around partnership that’s been going on for almost 20 years.

Teel, now age 30, says he’s too busy to settle down with a family. Ham, long divorced enjoys the freedom, along with hitting the road with partner and sidekick Teel. Antique Rovers Teel and Ham arrive twice a year from their family ranch and brick-and-mortar headquarters and warehouse, Hampton Farm, in Montabla. They set up on the Fayetteville Square, for eleven days this show, beginning September 19th. Antique Rovers features Americana and Texacana primitives and more. They culminate their 11-days in Fayetteville with a grand auction on Sunday, September 29th at 6:00 pm. sharp. During the auction, the duo hosts a complimentary all you-can-eat, along with free beer and wine. The Godfather and Godson are systematic, covering 11 states year-round from the Rockies to the Smokies, in their Ford transit van. Almost every weekend the twosome head off towards predetermined areas to retrieve the spoils from established pickers waiting on them. On the road they attend other shows and estate sales. Off the beaten path, in the heart of Fayetteville, Antique Rovers enjoy setting up camp a few miles over yonder. Teel says it makes no difference that they are not where most of the action is, because they have developed a strong following. Plus, more and more of those who wish to avoid the traffic and riffraff in other areas sneak into Fayetteville. Many dealers who will be showing at Marburger Farms and The Red Barn boost their own inventories at the Rovers’ auction, prior to the opening of their own shows. The buys they get provide additional room for decent mark ups. The success of the Antique Rovers duo no doubt comes from their early bond and continued determination. Possibly recalling one Godfather’s words of wisdom to Michael Corleone:“This is the profession we have chosen.”

Texas Cotton Gin Museum by Steph Jarvis & Laurie Krupala
H
istory comes alive at the Official Cotton Gin Museum of Texas, home of the oldest operating cotton gin in America. A visit to the historic sight, where the gin was built over 100 years ago, gives a glimpse into the hard and hot work our ancestors did to grow and produce cotton and cotton products. It is especially beneficial to take the guided tour. “If you’re looking for spit shine, and fresh paint, this may not be for you.” Remarked James from Houston, on tour at the gin. “But the tour and the film will help you slip back in time to when cotton was king and the hum of the gin was the heartbeat of the cotton town of Burton, Texas.” The gin, powered by its 1925 Bessemer engine, features the largest internal combustion engine of its vintage still operating in America. Tour guests get to try their hand (be careful!) at pulling seeds from balls of cotton and can watch a video that follows cotton from field to bale. The memorabilia and guides help illustrate how important the cotton industry was, and its impact on Texas and American history. Recognized by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Smithsonian Institution, Texas Historical Commission and the National Register of Historic Places, this small site is a must-see in central Texas. Some came just for the video and stayed for the tour!

“Our volunteer tour leader was very knowledgeable, interesting and friendly - he made history come alive for us!” said Warren from Pennsylvania. “I can’t imagine that hard work in the hot sun.” The real rub is to visit the Official Cotton Gin Museum of Texas during the third Saturday in April, when they have their annual festival. In addition to the parade, antique tractor pull, food, music, and craft booths, the big highlight of the day is “Lady B”—the famous, original, Bessemer engine is fired up to actually gin and bale cotton for a demonstration you just can’t see anywhere else in America.

NOT the Usual at Jay Dee’z Sports Grill By Laurie Krupala
T
he real news here is that this sports grill has it all. In a small town like La Grange, sports bars may conjure up images for old-timers like Hooters, or less desirable places to enjoy your favorite match. But Jay Dee’z Sports Grill broke the mold when they remade the sports bar previously located here to become a place you would love to bring your family, your buddies, and your grandparents for a stellar food and drink menu for all ages. “A sports grill should be a family place,” explained John Daniel Tohill, owner. “It is a place where we can welcome little league teams, sports teams, and sports fans. We want to conjure feelings from the Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle era, but still appeal to the new generation of 25-45 year-old leaders who will eventually take over here.” The large, lighted wall décor, reading LG TX with a state frame, has already been shared extensively on social media as a destination spot for photo ops, similar to places in Austin and the Round Top areas. Tohill says he wants people to see that and be proud of where they live or the place they The girls of Jay Dee’z visited. It is a landmark for locals and tourists and mimics the community pride that the restaurant and staff share with their customers.

“It feels like a big hug from the community when people come and tell me they’re happy we’re here,” said Tohill. “We have so much support, and are happy to give people what they want. We also like to provide a ‘culture shock,’ and wow people with some different menu options they’ve never thought of. It’s the little things that we like to change up a bit to keep our place interesting.”

Tohill has over 21 years of experience in culinary arts, having attended French culinary school, and traveled abroad as a personal chef for professional athletes and celebrities. He was living in Houston when he was asked to move to La Grange to open a sports grill here, and jumped on the opportunity. He is inspired by other menus that create unlikely pairings, and tries to mimic those with his own creative twist. For example, he saw “Chicken and Waffles,” and thought, ‘why not doughnuts?’ Therefore, his brunch menu ideas were born.
one like Landry, who sees the vision in the menu, and “gets it.” Landry and Tohill create such masterpieces as Eye-lash Pork Chop, the Hangover Burger, Banana Pudding Pancakes, and Steelhead Trout. “Steelhead trout is a dish that may have happened if butter and salmon had a baby,” smiles Tohill, “It is underfished, so we can get it fresh, and offer a new, fresh-seared flavor dish for our customers.”

More off-the-beaten-path menu items include Poutine, which is a Canadian dish of French fries with melted cheese curds smothered in brown gravy. If you are lucky enough to catch their Saturday or Sunday Bruch, offered from 10 am to 1 pm on both days, you will get a taste of chicken or beef burgers on a doughnut bun. There is even an Eggs Benedict option with glazed doughnuts, called “The Sugar Daddy Bennie!”
“The doughnut people think we are crazy, because we keep buying doughnuts without holes,” remarked Tohill. “But people who used to be upset that we didn’t serve lunch are now the ones who only come for brunch, so I think they like it!”

Jay Dee’z is open Monday through Thursday from 11 am to 11 pm, Friday 11 am- midnight, and Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to 10 pm, serving brunch only from 10 am to 1 pm. In addition to all the unique menu options, the favorite burgers and wings remain a staple at Jay Dee’z! All of the food is made from scratch, from deli meat sliced in-house to desserts. It is important to Tohill that he bring in the best quality ingredients. “We slice all of our deli meats in-house. It is easier for me to control the quality and the raw ingredients coming in if I do it myself, so everything here is done from scratch.” And let’s not forget about the drinks…Jay Dee’z offers 20 beers on tap, a full bar, and a frozen drink of the month, most popular being the frozen Jack and Coke. Orange Dreamsicles and Frose’s will also cool you down in the hot Texas summer. There are 42 televisions to enjoy your favorite game, and outdoor games on the patio like Jenga, Connect 4, and Cornhole. Jay Dee’z is geared up for the upcoming football season, with jerseys for the staff and lots of good television coverage. There will also be giveaways during the season. In these parts, Tohill says it is a constant battle between the Aggies and Longhorns, and the Cowboys and Texans. They can only play the sound for one team, so usually they go with the team who has the best record. If you want to be part of the football action, make sure to watch your games at Jay Dee’z! The sports grill is located at 2001 W. State Highway 71 in La Grange (in the Dominos Pizza Plaza). Call 979-206-2066 for details and reservations.
