R&M Rodeo Photos Well it’s almost Christmas!!! I lived through three months on the pipe line even if everything around my house fell apart while I was gone. I’ve been home almost 10 days and I’m ready to head back just to get away from all of the work. I made enough money to by mama a new windshield for her hoopty. She still blames me everytime we go somewhere in it. I’ll take that crack to the grave. I promise I wasn’t tail gating (wink). When I got home I had a desk full of mail to open. It’s taken me a few days to get thru everything. Since it is the holiday season and a lot of my mail was concerning that I want to remind everyone that it is not about buying the biggest or the most presents. Christmas is a season that a lot of people have a hard time dealing with. You never know what someone is going through when you meet them on the
street or at a store. Keep your patience in mind, keep your manners in place and remember if you don’t want your mama to know you did it, then you probably shouldn’t be doing it. I just spent three months away from my family. I know there are families that do this all of the time. It was not easy for me and my son is in college. It will sure make you rethink things. Keep your fellow man in mind this holiday season. The smallest gesture can make the biggest difference in someones life. We’re all going through something even if we haven’t admitted it to ourselves yet.
with events in the winter. I think there is so much to go to these days that most people are kind of glad to have a little time off. December brings the NFR in Las Vegas and anyone that is heading to that has to rathole some money to go and when they get back they are a little lighter in the wallet. January will be here before we know it. Pretty soon it will be membeship rodeos, The American and Easter. Time flies when you’re having fun. I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. I hope everyone has a safe and wonderful Christmas and New Year’s. 2020 is a good even number, bring it on!!!
There are already ads for Spring 2020 in the paper this month. That is a good thing. The winter in Texas used to be a place for weekly rodeos and jackpots. Each year it seems like things get slower and slower

Different Not Less Kaden Ramirez
JenningsRodeoPhotography.com By Krista Lucas The Texas High School Rodeo Association is made up of hundreds of members from all over this great state, as well as a few neighboring states. High school students from near and far want to compete in the state known for tough competition. Victoria, Texas is home to one THSRA member who has a very unique story. Kaden Ramirez competes in three events, tiedown, ribbon and breakaway roping, in region seven of the THSRA. His mother, Kimberly, competed in rodeos for many years, and his dad, Robert, was a team roper. “I am very blessed to have very hard working and dedicated parents to see that I stay going in the right direc-
tion,” Ramirez said. The young cowboy has been described as having a huge heart, big try and a wonderful attitude that anyone will fall in love with. Something else that makes Ramirez one of a kind is that he has autism. Autism is a develop-

ID Sugar, is a bay mare bred by Louie Wells in Oklahoma. Sugar is a very special horse to Ramirez, and the two together have formed a special bond. “I tried many different roping horses that I was not able to rope on due to most all of them require you to use your feet and hands to get them and keep them in the box, which gets me confused. I ran across a lady, Crissi McCormick, in Van Ormy, Texas where I had went to try yet another horse that didn’t work for me when she knew Sugar would fit the bill and get me to be able to rope,” Ramirez said. “Sugar has realized I don’t use my feet to guide her and she does it for me and will almost take herself in the box and back up. She allows me to make mistakes, teach me and is super patient.” Sugar and Ramirez are loved not only by their peers but also their mentors. Professional ropers like Jason Bell and Charley Hiller have helped them along the way, and it is evident that Ramirez and his horse have left a lasting impression. “Kaden has more try than anyone I know,” Hiller said. “He will push himself until he passes out if I asked, and he has a heart of gold.” Ramirez has always looked up to the greats like Trevor Brazile, Cody Ohl, the Coopers, and the one and only Joe Beaver who shares his hometown of Victoria. “Another set of people that I admire is Gene and

Who knows, until then I will keep hitting all the rodeo pens I can.” Autism awareness is extremely important to the Ramirez family. Autism is still growing in numbers every year, and it has a large range from

He has learned life lessons and gained valuable knowledge that can not be found anywhere else but the rodeo world. “Rodeo has taught me how to be self sufficient, responsible, hard working, honest, true, and respectable,” he said. “It is more than a hobby for me, it is a therapy that has helped improve my hand-eye coordination, speech and the way I communicate by speaking better with confidence.” Ramirez has accomplished many feats and has won 26 buckles to date competing in the sport he loves. “I love to rodeo because it is somewhere I don’t have to be worried about communicating with anyone but a horse,” he said. “Animals are easy to get along with, and they understand me without words.”

Ramirez wants people to know that individuals with autism have amazing minds, they are just different in their communication but still want to be included. Victoria, Texas may have produced another famous name in the near future, and Ramirez is someone everyone can look up to.
When he is not roping at a rodeo, Ramirez likes to keep his mind busy with hunting, fishing, 4-H, and FFA where he is the current vice president and Chaplin, respectively, for his local chapters. He has also had success showing hogs for the past eight years. “Showing hogs is another thing I can do with animals that requires hard work and allows me to just be me in the ring with my animal,” Ramirez said. Along with rodeo, showing and other hobbies, he also joined the high school wrestling team. He was one of only three freshmen to receive a letterman jacket, not to mention the first with autism. As a student, Ramirez has been on the A/B Honor Roll since sixth grade and is currently on the A Honor Roll with a 3.8 GPA. He is well on his way to accomplishing any goals he has set for himself. “In the future I hope to be able to attend Texas A&M with something to do with

“God’s Christmas Gift” From Pastor Randy Weaver Christmas really isn’t a “biblical holiday” but why pass up the chance to tell our friends and relatives about the ultimate gift/ sacrifice God has wrapped for us? Over the years, there have been repeated and concerted efforts to get Christ out of Christmas. Everything from removing Christmas carols from many public schools, to banning nativity scenes on public property, to taking the name of Jesus out of any connection with Christmas in public life. It has been a persistent and unrelenting push to remove any influence God may have on this holiday. For over one thousand years the church has celebrated the birth of Christ in December.
I see no reason to give up on using such a wonderful, powerful tool to teach people about Christ. After all, it is in the story of the baby in the manger we hear about the greatest gift man has ever received, presented in the humble wrappings of “swaddling clothes.” Given that God has given us such a wonderful and loving gift, how can we help other people know more about this gift that Christmas represents for us? Many fail to comprehend that salvation is a free gift. Many want to “earn” their salvation. They want to clean themselves up before they come to God. Or they believe they don’t have to come to God on His terms, because they
Cowboy Sports News Page 18 - December 2019
have already done enough to make themselves feel comfortable that “yes they will make it into heaven.” In John 1:11-13 we’re told: “He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God. No man comes to the Father except the Spirit draws him. It has to be your choice to accept God’s gift. And you have to accept that gift on God’s terms, not your own. You can’t buy this gift of salvation or earn it. You have to accept God’s gift in God’s way. What is that way? You have to believe, repent, confess Jesus as your Lord & Master and be baptized. None of that “buys” your salvation. If you want eternal life, this is a requirement from Him....
to accept His free gift. You see, God gave and sacrifice His only begotten son so that we might have salvation. A debt of sin had to be paid by a perfect sacrifice. It was not a trivial gift. It wasn’t a nice gesture. He was the one and only complete and perfect sacrifice of love for you and me! In The Spotlight With Sunny B’ This month ”In The Spotlight” went behind the scenes with Jason & Heather Murray of J & J Rodeo Company to see how the family juggles a heavy schedule and being on the road 30 weeks out of the year. Sunny: What a year for you guys! Congratulations to J & J on being Stock Contractor of The Year in the UPRA for the 3rd year and also to Heather on getting secretary of the UPRA Finals three times & secretary of the year two times. How do you all do this while juggling a family of 5, teaching and coaching, while staying on the road 30 weeks out of the year? Jason: Well we love rodeo and we love family so we just incorporate the two into our lives and somehow it works. Sunny: How did you get started in the rodeo business?. Jason: In 1997 I was working for Sammy Andrews. I drove the big truck, set barrels, loaded calves and worked the chutes. Whatever I needed to do. I loved the life & the rodeo business and so I started acquiring a few head of stock here and there. Sunny: When did you decide to step out on your own? Jason: In 2008 I bought a ticket
to watch the UPRA finals. In 2009 I bought a card and in 2011 I was at my first finals. I was hooked. Sunny: So that was your first contract? Jason: No actually I had the calves at Fort Worth for the past 12 to 15 years. I furnished calves before I started putting on rodeos. Sunny: That is pretty cool. I am not sure people were even aware of that. Jason: My first big contract was putting on the Texas Junior High State Finals n 2010. I have been there 10 years now.
crew that works for me is always here. They work for me on and off the road feeding or whatever else has to be done. I could not do this without my crew for sure. When we load up to leave and we all go as a family. The same guys work for me everywhere I have a contract whether it be a high school rodeo, college rodeo or youth rodeo to the UPRA rodeos. I use my same people. They are absolutely vital to my business and my family. Sunny: How many children do you & Heather have? Jason: We have 3, Madison 15, Leddy 12 & Jack is 8.
S u n n y : That is a pretty tough rodeo. How do you get through all these different rodeos while juggling everything you have on your plate? J a s o n : The
Sunny: Do you guys home school them? Heather: No, they go to public school and I teach and coach. Madison plays ball and rodeos, Leddy cheers and ropes and Jack plays ball and ropes. I also coach a junior high team. Our games are during the week so it doesn’t affect the rodeo schedule much. Sunny: Wow that is a pretty hectic schedule. What do you guys do in your down time? Heather: We enjoy taking Madison to the big jackpots and events they have for breakaway ropers now days. She loves to
COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM
compete and works very hard at it. We also enjoy just relaxing with family and friends and doing nothing! Sunny: How do you manage to juggle her high school rodeos with your schedule and the other things she has to do ? Jason: We actually have the contract for Region X so we are all there anyway, the whole crew, it works out great! We have 12 performances of Region X rodeos so 6 weekends and we are there anyway. Sunny: What would you say is your favorite rodeo you put on? J a s o n : I like all of my rodeo’s and I have great committees. But The one that stands out I would say i s Tat u m . W e started there when we only had 3 rodeos. We had absolutely no contestants. Now 5 years later we have grown to the largest highest paying UPRA rodeo. The hospitality from the Tatum Cowboy Church is like no other. We are so blessed. S u n n y : That is wonderful, I know from being on the competing end as well as the working end we all appreciate great stock contractors and the hard work they put in so the working end can have a part in the sport we love. So how many total rodeo’s do you have? Jason: Well I have the San Antonio Stock show & Rodeo Youth Rodeo, the 12 Region X High School Rodeo’s, College rodeo at Uvalde, the calves at Fort Worth, Texas Junior High State Finals and the Texas High School Rodeo State Finals and about 12 other contracts. So my crew stays pretty busy. Sunny: Has Heather always secretaried rodeo’s? Jason: No, in the beginning she did not and after about 3 rodeos I informed her you better get ready

For complete 2020 rodeo schedule visit LMRodeo.com to learn how to do this, cause you are it! So she did and has been with me ever since. Sunny: How long have you two been together? Heather: We dated in high school and got married in 2002 so we have been together quite a while! Sunny: What would you say has been your biggest accomplishment to date? Jason: As a rodeo company I would say being Stock Contractor Of The Year 2017, 2018 & 2019. I cannot thank the contestants enough for this honor. Also Winnsboro was the first big committee to hire us. We have been there 6 years now and it is now the 4th largest UPRA rodeo of the year. Sunny: Does one event stand out more than any other to you? Jason: To me no end of the arena is any more important than the other. I focus on the rough stock end during those events and on the timed events during those events. Each end is equally important to me. Sunny: What does a big hungry stock contractor like to eat? Jason: I have to go with a steak.
Heather: I would have to say Mexican food. Sunny: What about music for you two? Heather: We like old country. Sunny: Do you all like to go dancing Heather: Jason is more of a hold up the bar type guy! Sunny: Do you guys have any funny rodeo stories you would like to share with our readers? Heather: Let’s just say “ San Antonio Texas, Life 360, Ross Johnson & Jason FOUND!!!!!!!!! “ We will leave the rest to the readers imagination!!! Sunny: I won’t even ask but sounds like a good time was had by all!! Heather: Yes!!!!! Sunny: Anything else you would like to share? Jason: We have a great family and we love what we do. We couldn’t do it without our crew and our contestants that show up week after week to support us. And especially for all the committees that stepped up and took a chance on us and our crew. For this we are very grateful.

If you were a CPRA 2018 rookie and did not win $1,500 or more, and did not win a 2018 rookie championship, then you are still eligible for a 2nd year. However, you still must sign the same forms as those first year applicants. Breaking It Down With Speed Williams The Growth of Team Roping It’s still hard to believe that over $12 million dollars will be paid to team ropers this month during the World Series Finals at the South Point Casino in Las Vegas. That doesn’t even include the other jackpots in Wickenburg, Arizona the week before, or any of the other ropings going on in Las Vegas. Our sport has come a very long way in the last twenty to thirty years. Thanks to Denny Gentry and the classification system we can now rope for more money than ever before. Unlike other disciplines, team roping allows ropers, regardless of age or gender, a chance to compete and win. You are classified based on ability and catching percentage allowing you to compete against people of your own ability. When I was growing up in Florida, ropings were classified as A, B, C, and D. There was just a handful of A ropers, so no one had Open ropings. Beginners were D ropers. Most of the jackpots were B and C ropings. The top ropers couldn’t compete and the beginners had no chance. It
wasn’t great and the sport didn’t experience much growth until Denny Gentry and Gary Poythress started the USTRC and created the classification system we’re now familiar with. Whether you agree or disagree with the number you or your kids have been given, there’s a lot to debate about the system. I do know, without it, we would not have ropings that pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. That being said, I don’t always agree of some of their decisions. I wish there was more incentive for kids to progress. As it is now, when you become a #8 or #9 heeler, or #8 header, you no longer have the opportunity to rope for much money unless you rope against world class ropers and NFR qualifiers. Last year at the USTRC Finals there was no Open roping. This year there was an Open added at the last minute, but it wasn’t the event we’d seen in the past. When I was competing, the USTRC Open was a very big deal and it packed the house. There were lots of vendors, ropers, and spectators. Many of the pro ropers have people and supporters who come watch them rope and cheer them on. Those guys will also bring
their horses and enter the lower numbered ropings. In my opinion, when the top competitors are not involved in the sport there’s nothing for the young ropers and up and comers to aspire to. Team roping is classified as a hobby but I see people who invest a lot in learning and improving. I believe they should have the opportunity to win before they are raised. I also see kids who learn and improve quickly who are moved through the number system at a very fast pace. I do think it could stand some tweaking. If you work hard enough to get better, I believe there should be an allotted time you get to compete and not let having a good weekend get you raised completely out of your ability level. Currently, if you’re successful and place in more than one out of nine entries, it’s their opinion that you’re mis numbered. One entry counts the same in a 20-team roping as it does in a 400team roping. Personally, I don’t agree with that and think it should be based on how many teams are entered. Basically, the system is designed for you not to go smaller ropings, because if you go and win you’ll get your number bumped. It’s much harder to win at a 400-team roping. This creates a debate with my son when we’re choosing where to go. If we go to a roping
with $40 fees, rope Saturday and Sunday, enter a bunch and win $500 or $1,000… is it worth getting your number bumped? Personally, I’m very grateful for this growth of our sport. It has enabled me, and other world champions, the ability to earn a living sharing our knowledge with people who want to work hard to get better. I teach people almost every day and I’m very passionate about it. It’s always been a dream of mine to be able to rope every day and make money doing it. Without the classification system no one not have the opportunity to rope for the kind of money available today. Whether you’re happy with your number or not, the system is in place for us all to have a chance to play the game. It all comes down to whether you want to play the game for a shot at winning your share of over $20 million this December. What’s new with me: I’m excited to announce We will be giving away a Speed Trainer this month. To enter, submit a video of yourself roping on the Speed Trainer and upload it at speedtrainergiveaway.com. If you don’t have access to a Speed Trainer, but you will be in Las Vegas during the WSTR Finals, come see us upstairs at the Convention Center and have someone video you. Entries will be taken through December 20th.
WIN A SPEED TRAINER!!! To enter: • Go to speedtrainergiveaway.com • You must submit a video of you roping on a SPEED TRAINER • You can not enter without roping on the SPEED TRAINER (Limited one entry only)
