A Letter to Our Readers When you embark on the path of the holistic, the spiritual, the metaphysical, everything is fraught with meaning. Nothing is casual— everything, no matter how seemingly insignificant, means something. Take, f’rinstance, a number. It pops up on a clock, a street address, on the cover of a fine natural magazine— 111. One eleven. One, one, one. Fortunately, there are those among us who can tell you what it means, and the lovely and talented Doreen Virtue is one of them. (Love that name— conjures up an image of banging a tambourine in a tent revival meeting.) As one of Doreen’s angel numbers, 111 means a portal is opening before you.

In the preceding paragraphs, btw… “You” was word number — yep— 111. Pretty cosmic, huh? It also means there are only sixty-something words left with which to wrap up a regular monthly diatribe that, for some reason, is a magazine tradition. 111 is also a palindrome, so maybe it’s best to exit the portal where it started. When you embark on the path of the holistic… – Michael Abedin

TATTOO WHO? by Dr. Joe Vitale

An exclusive excerpt from The Secret Prayer, the new book by Dr. Joe Vitale Dear God, Please give me, give me, give me. Oh, and give me some more. Thanks. Amen. – How most people pray, by Rev. Will Bowen Prayer is a soul’s sincere desire, uttered or unexpressed. – Old hymn After reading an ABC7News article that tattoos are on the rise among professionals, I decided to do a quick Google search to find out why people are willing to endure hours of pain to get them. There were all the usual suspects— for personal identity, to honor loved ones, even for profit. (Advertising space can be pricey). But to pray? Yes – that, too, apparently, with the majority of artwork in this genre appearing to be the well-known Serenity Prayer or an image of praying hands. No surprises there— they’re both fairly common. Not to diminish them, but I doubt there’s a gift store in Texas that doesn’t have either framed pictures or coffee mugs emblazoned with one or the other.

Then I stumbled upon Michael Franti.

Dr. Joe Vitale is the globally famous author of numerous bestselling books, including The Attractor Factor and Zero Limits, a star in the hit movie The Secret, founder of Miracles Coaching and The Secret Mirror, inventor of Hypnotic Writing, and a man ‘on fire’ to live his passions and help the world. His main site is www.JoeVitale.com His new album, One More Day, is at www.OneMoreDayCD.com All of his LOA albums are at www.allhealingmsic.com

At a towering six feet six inches, he’s the lead singer for the band Spearhead, whose music is known for its positive messaging. A highly conscious musician, he’s also an activist with his own foundation— Do It for the Love. I became really excited when I discovered he has not one, but two, prayer tattoos. Reading the inspiration behind them, I couldn’t help being completely enchanted, and my guess is that you’ll be, too.

On his left arm are the words, “Today I pray for _________.” The blank line is included, and each day either he, or his partner Sara, fills it in with a Sharpie. Sometimes he’s praying for someone or something in particular, which he’s very specific about – “my mom” or “rain” or a “friend.” Or, if he’s playing a concert, he might even let a fan write in whatever they want to pray for. “It’s about positivity,” he says. “There’re a lot of people who come to our shows who aren’t feeling positive or openhearted, and they want to get that experience from the music that night that we’re playing in their town. I think [having them fill in the tattoo] is another way to help someone feel positive about whatever situation they’re in.”

Birds, fish, and prayers. If that’s not inspiring enough, he also has an image of a bird that turns into a fish, then into a prayer, depicted by an arrow, on both forearms running from his elbows to his little finger. He calls it a “prayer of abundance” that originates from a story in Tahiti: In Tahiti, the birds live up in the trees, and in the morning they go out into the water. The fisherman watch from the shore and see where the birds are diving into the water to get fish, which angle they’re going in, how long they stay in the water... and then from all that, the fishermen are able to tell which direction to approach in their boats to not scare the fish, and how deep to cast their nets. So if you watch the signs in your life, you’ll get what you need – you’ll get your bounty. Be observant and still at times.

I love this prayer and story. It not only clearly explains the basis of receiving your sustenance and nourishment on a daily basis, it shows how different cultures see the truth of things in the world around them. Even if you’re not a fisherman, you can appreciate the analogy and its message of practicing mindfulness. In other words, it isn’t a question of the Divine providing— it’s a question of how well you can be still and pay attention. These are the roots that form your secret prayer.

Seesaw.

If you had just a minute to breathe And they granted you one final wish Would you ask for something like another chance?

If you’re an artist, you know all about playing with time— your job is to stop it, freeze a moment of it so others can see what you saw when you saw it, or see whatever they decide to see when they see what you saw, or something like that. Michael Garfield’s art is seen, heard, and read. A painter, musician, and a writer, his work is making its encore appearance on the cover of Austin All Natural with Psych Rock Thistle, a spiraling, time-warping portal if ever there was one— the universe’s own Fourth of July fireworks, God’s graffiti, a psychedelic flashback on the back of your eyelids.

– Traffic, The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys

W

hat would you do if you could go back, knowing what you know now, and change one thing in your life? Would you grab an opportunity that slipped by, take a chance you didn’t take – or would you stop right before you did something incredibly crazy and reckless that didn’t turn out the way you hoped, but could have gone a different way? Would you do the sensible thing this time, the right thing— the safe thing that would lead you down the straight and narrow?

Of course you wouldn’t. You’d go for it. You know you would— and why not? Given the choice between the wild and crazy and the straight and narrow— where you wake up every morning trying to decide which foot to kick yourself with for not going for it – well, who wouldn’t take a chance? Of course, that’s the decision you might have made back when you went ahead and did the incredibly crazy and reckless thing that didn’t turn out all that well, which brings you right back where you started in the decision making process, which should give you a clue as to the true nature of the universe.

It’s a circle. A spiral, actually, and the only real choice may be whether you’re winding in or out, clockwise or counter-clockwise, backwards, forwards or sideways. As A Course in Miracles puts it, time can release as well as imprison, depending on whose interpretation of it you use. Might as well pick one with some flexibility— at which point the cliché about the definition of insanity may not have as much punch to it. If there’s a rewind button, maybe you can do the same thing and expect a different result. Go ahead— press it. You know you want to.

Ah, psychedelics. A fine segue to an opportunity to do a bit of New Austin grousing and bemoan the loss of Old Austin— but what’s the point? We’ve already paved Paradise and put up a Pay to Park, and there’s no rewinding to be had once the condos come, except in your memory. Which is, of course, another segue. (Cue spacy segue music on the theremin…) Time rewound itself all over again in May with an encore presentation of the Memorial Day floods of 1981, followed by enough rain in June to all but fill Lake Travis back up and make everyone who’d been complaining about the drought complain about the rain. Ironically, 1981 was a watershed of sorts in Austin history. Only a year earlier, the Armadillo World Headquarters closed and the first Whole Foods opened at 10th and Lamar, earning the title of “flagship store” when Shoal Creek flooded Lamar. Pianos from Strait Music Company and Volkswagens from a car lot at 12th and Lamar made their way to Town Lake. (Turns out it wasn’t a myth— those early, watertight VW bugs really did float.) Maybe time really is a river, and, to paraphrase plumbers, it flows uphill, downhill, or sideways— and payday comes on Monday. The New Coming Out by Zaeli

A portrait of life in the closet‌ You believe something’s fundamentally wrong with you. Even if no one tells you that, it’s evident. Your first-choice lifestyle, rarely seen, is dismissed as perverse, self-indulgent, exhibitionist. You adjust expectations, pray for reform, mimic respected people in hopes of being respectable. These efforts never come naturally. If they do, it’s at the cost of vitality and enthusiasm, deferring to a tricky combination of giving up and keeping at it. You want to be a good person, and accept that it means fighting yourself.

This could be about pressure to be heterosexual – but it’s not. It’s about pressure to be monogamous. When I tell people I offer support for open relationships, it’s not uncommon to see muscles tense and eyes dilate. Their fight-or-flight reflexes see a threat, fearing new ideas will inspire their partner to backpedal on commitment— or they’ll be tempted to reopen long-closed conversations with themselves.

I understand. Questioning romantic norms is questioning society – destabilizing one destabilizes the other. But is that so bad? Are we happy with society as it is? If you believe the world could be better, big things will have to change, and that can feel scary. What’s bigger than marriage? It’s the model for romantic relationships, the bedrock of society — but the society it was designed to uphold was unromantic and undemocratic. Personal fulfillment and mutual growth weren’t marital priorities; rather, preservation of bloodlines and material inheritance necessitated monogamy. This is historical fact, not an attack on marriage, but it does present a dilemma.

If the primary reason for marriage has changed, why are the rules the same? In part, we now marry for “happinessâ€? but lack experience defining it. Generic standards override messages of hearts and bodies weakened by the anti-pleasure bias of our cultural ancestors. Following your bliss seems naĂŻve or selfish. You tell yourself it’s supposed to be hard. Nobody has everything. Better to cheat on a loved one, or tear a family apart, than admit to unorthodox desires. Maybe we’d suffer less knowing it’s normal (and wonderful!) to love many people in a lifetime, even at the same time; that freedom and commitment aren’t mutually exclusive and loyalty and possession are not synonymous; that you don’t have to choose between feeling trapped and being alone; that normal, ethical people wish for the both of best worlds, and it’s possible. But there are obstacles. Re-engineering relationships is hard to do without real-life role models. That’s why it’s important to come out of the closet and share this adventure. First, take time to look inside, taking stock of what you really want. Fears and taboos aside, how do you want to love? Do you wish you could spend your life going deeper with one person, yet not miss out on other opportunities to connect romantically? Sit with that. Maybe you truly want a monogamous relationship – and that’s fine. Perhaps you don’t want children, or even a partner, but feel like a failure for not having them. Let that register. When you’re ready, find one person you truly trust and tell them how you feel. Show your heart as it really is, vast, unique, growing, capable of far more than typically assumed. This is the beginning of your adventure – bringing consciousness and intention to your romantic life. Zaeli is a love coach specializing in transitional and customchartered relationships, helping bring consciousness and intention to your romantic life. PERSONAL SUMMER Menopause and bio-identical hormones

by Dr. Melissa Miskell The term bio-identical hormones has been bantered about by alternative practitioners ever since Suzanne Sommers brought the concept to millions of women. It can be confusing, however. You don’t have to be fiftyish to have menopause symptoms. Many begin having symptoms – insomnia, mood swings, decreased sex drive, apathy, foggy thinking – as early as thirty-five, long before the personal summer of dreaded hot flashes begins. Women make estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. Progesterone and estrogen, the primary female hormones, are the reason women have a monthly cycle, become pregnant (well, not the reason, but they allow it to happen), and feel like a woman. Decrease in them marks the onset of menopause. Progesterone, only produced in the ovaries, is first to decline in concentration – estrogen and testosterone are also made in adrenal glands and fat cells. (Hormone production in ovaries begins to decline after age thirty, which is why peak bone mass occurs at thirty-one and then declines.) Women may begin to feel effects of progesterone decline well before they actually go through menopause.

There are three basic categories of women’s hormone replacement. t 0WFS UIF DPVOUFS QMBOU CBTFE GPSNVMBT with phytoestrogens derived from such plants as soy, wild yam, or black cohosh. These molecules bind weakly to hormone receptors. t 1IBSNBDFVUJDBM IPSNPOFT Premarin and Provera. Premarin is derived from pregnant mare urine, so it’s conjugated equine estrogens. Provera is a completely synthetic molecule, not found in nature. Both bind to receptors, but have excess atoms that can be detrimental, as shown in trials proving Premarin and Provera increase risk of breast cancer and heart disease. t #JP JEFOUJDBM IPSNPOFT compounds that are the exact molecular makeup of hormones produced by the ovaries. They fit hormone receptors perfectly and don’t cause cancer. Cancer is caused by free radicals, not hormones produced by your body, but some cancers are estrogen and/or progesterone receptor positive. Your own natural hormones, or bio-identical ones, may cause them to grow – but they don’t cause the cancer. Testing should be done to determine the concentration of hormones in your body, and then a specific combination of bio-identical hormones can be compounded to fit your exact needs, improve your quality of life, and promote healthy aging. g Prrocesssing your ca ard pro oceessiing g Gone into business on your own? Congratulations on your independence. Instead of working eight hours a day for someone else, you now work 24/7 for yourself. Unless you’re independently wealthy and your business is a hobby or a write-off, all decisions inevitably become financial ones, since the success of any business boils down to getting people to give you money for your product or service. (The bottom line really is the bottom line.) One thing that’s a necessity is the ability to burn plastic — to be able to take credit cards. Booking sessions or classes? It’s a put up or shut up moment— if someone won’t give you a card number to hold the space, chances are good they’re not really committed to showing up. Even if they are, a lot can happen in the time it takes them to send you a check or go online to pay you. There are plenty of card processing options, but like anything involving banks, they don’t always have your best interests in mind. You’ll review it regularly, though, right?

Yeah, right. With everything else you have to do as a business owner, reviewing your processing services is about as appealing as getting an all-day root canal. Miss Monica, an independent financial specialist who works with a personalized, feminine touch (and a legal degree) setting up processing service for clients, puts it simply. “Take advantage of experts. If you need legal advice, you go to an attorney— medical advice, a doctor or healer. Want to save money on card processing? Take a deep breath, try not to be overwhelmed – then ask an expert.” Business owners, she points out, don’t have full control over everything affecting them— seasonal economics, trends, laws that change— but they do have control over their expenses, and keeping them to a minimum is just good business. Money saved is money available for other things —advertising, vacations, maybe even expansion. “I’ve seen a business owner open a brand-new location with all new employees within a year of revising their processing services.” The new breed of entrepreneur, though, develops an idea into a profitable business, sells it to someone else to expand, and moves on to another inspiration— and keeping things lean and simple makes it a much more attractive sale. BRAVE NEW BOOKS Natural Health HQ

Austin’s alternative lifestyle headquarters by Catherine Bleish and John Bush Brave New Books has been keeping Austin underground. The literally underground bookstore (it’s below a bank) has brought alternative views of history, government, economics, and health to Austinites since 2006 through weekly workshops, movie screenings, and lectures intended to open minds to new ways of living and viewing the world. What started as a conspiracy bookstore soon became Austin’s headquarters for all things alternative. When you begin to question one aspect of modern society, it’s easy to become curious about other aspects as well. Alternative views of history turned into alternative views of politics, economic policy, currency (silver, bitcoin), food systems, and health.

Radical roots. The store was founded by Austin native Harlan Dietrich, who was dissatisfied with his University of Texas liberal arts education. He opened the store with the intention of introducing students to alternative views of history, different from what they’re exposed to in the classroom by University faculty. He stocked the shelves with dystopian fiction, DVD’s covering false flag terror attacks, secret societies, global government conspiracies, and other controversial ideas. As the bookstore grew into a community, both the bookstore and the community surrounding it took a solution-oriented focus. t "OHSZ BCPVU DPSQPSBUJPOT NBOJQVMBUJOH UIFJS GPPE systems, patrons began taking ownership of their food supply, planting gardens and growing their own food. t 'FE VQ XJUI DFOUSBMJ[FE CBOLJOH TZTUFNT QBUSPOT UPPL control of their economic value by using silver and bitcoin. t #FXJMEFSFE CZ NPOPQPMJTUJD FEVDBUJPO TZTUFNT UIBU leave independent children behind, patrons explored homeschooling, and even unschooling— a child-led natural learning philosophy. t $PODFSOFE BCPVU 0CBNBDBSF BOE PUIFS DFOUSBMJ[FE health institutions, patrons empowered themselves by refocusing their life on natural health and wellness.

Do you inherit your cavities? by Matthew Carpenter, DDS There’s always been something inherently discomforting about the practice of dentistry, something about the damage and destruction done to teeth when you’re fixing them. As a dentist, those two concepts don’t go together— helping and hurting at the same time. It’s the standard way we’re trained to remove decay in dental school, though. It wasn’t until recently, studying with Dr. Tim Rainey in South Texas, that I learned that dental schools are teaching unhealthy or incorrect concepts for removing soft areas of decay from hard, mineralized teeth to fix cavities. What Dr. Rainey has been doing for thirty years is trying to understand oral disease trends in families. Dentists run into scenarios that don’t seem to make logical sense— situations something like this: A 13-year-old girl who brushes and flosses twice daily and doesn’t eat sugar comes into the office for a cleaning and exam. At the same time, her 14-year-old brother, who hasn’t brushed his teeth in months or longer, who doesn’t know which end of the toothbrush to use, who came into the office drinking a Dr. Pepper, is also having a cleaning and exam. The girl’s exam reveals four new cavities, and the boy’s reveals no new cavities. The girl is more disciplined about home care, diet, and approach to oral health, but has more disease. She cries, feels ashamed of herself, doesn’t feel like her efforts have been worthwhile.

Born with bacteria. As a doctor who believes in empowering patients, you hate to see people feeling apathy or disillusionment. When you’re trying to help patients fight the good fight with prevention, you want them to see their efforts make a difference, and can influence how much future work may need to be done. How are you supposed to help, when it seems like she’s doing everything right, and the boy’s doing everything wrong? One of the most uncomfortable things about being a doctor is occasionally not knowing how to solve patients’ problems. Combine shame and embarrassment from being told you have four cavities, and it’s easy to understand why just the thought of going to the dentist makes you feel crummy. Dr. Rainey’s research actually revealed that much of the time bacteria that cause decay are actually in your teeth when you’re born. That’s right— un-erupted teeth already have cavity-causing bacteria in them when you’re born. The bacteria come from the mother and father, and the history and geography of the family. The unique fingerprint of bacteria, viruses, and parasites inherent to each family is

14

referred to as the microbiome, and each family’s is unique in the world. No two are the same, and include bacteria from everyone in the family system— even pets they’ve had. Studying this microbiome helps understand disease trends in a family, or why mom and brother get cavities and father and daughter get none.

Remineralizing. Seek, and ye shall find. The most powerful concept I’ve learned to help prevent tooth loss, root canal therapy, and expensive, extensive, invasive dentistry involves air abrasion and ozone therapy. Dr. Rainey has helped show bacteria that end up causing oral decay are confined to pits and fissures in your teeth. Using air abrasion— a high-pressure stream of sand— we can painlessly remove these small niches of harmful microbiology without damaging the tooth or having any negative impact on its long-term strength or function, then use ozone to sterilize the preparations. This not only desensitizes the restored tooth, but research suggests decayed tooth structure can re-mineralize and heal on its own once bacteria are removed, because ozone is a regenerative medicine. We don’t use fluoridated products to restore teeth. Instead, when we want to improve chances of helping patients heal their teeth, we refer them to our naturopathic physician for help with eating re-mineralizing foods that help your teeth regrow, and with fat-soluble vitamin intake and supplementation. I want to help limit emotional suffering that goes with not understanding why parts of our bodies are decaying. I want to make dentistry better, stop disease trends in families of patients— and make everything easier for everybody. Dr. Matthew Carpenter of Transcend Dental Health uses drill-free air abrasion, ozone therapy, natural alternatives to antibiotics, and nonsurgical treatment of gum disease in his biological dentistry practice, with naturopathic physician Melissa Russ, ND. Quantum Biofeedback and a trusty DeLorean by Kristin Starr Think back to a time when you felt good— really good. A cool tune on the radio, a clear summer sky, your sweetie by your side.

Remember it? Even if your conscious doesn’t, your subconscious does. It’s the energetic template for physical, mental, and emotional health, and the job of any form of healing is to get you back to that place. Surgery, drugs, and other technological marvels of current Western medicine are great for repairing or hiding damage, but they operate on the premise of going after what’s wrong with you, with little or no thought to what should be right— and they can sometimes cause as much damage as they fix. (There’s something inherently wrong with hearing death as a possible side effect of, say, psoriasis medication.) Energy healing operates on the basis of re-introducing the correct frequency of good health, like a pitch pipe or tuning fork giving an instrument its correct tone—its correct frequency – until it entrains and produces it on its own. Traditional forms of energy healing, however, are said to introduce a broad spectrum of energy frequencies and leave it up to the recipient to sort them out. Biofeedback is the happy marriage of technology and energy healing, and has been used by athletes for decades to improve performance.

Erasing time. The SCIO (Scientific Consciousness Interface Operations) quantum biofeedback system introduces thousands of frequencies in a matter of minutes, measures them against a baseline, and gives then a thorough read. The FDA has approved this device for biofeedback use for stress reduction, pain relief, muscle retraining, brain wave balancing, and improved sleep. Practitioners who become skilled with using SCIO software combine scientific measurements and intuition to feed back frequencies that have the potential to harmonize energy patterns on a quantum, subatomic level. Along the way, the device provides the practitioner with an artificial intelligence “trail of breadcrumbs toward the most effective re-training session. It is, in a sense, a way of erasing time—and while that concept is not FDA approved, of course, it is probably right up there with that clear summer sky, cool tune, and your best sweetie. Crank up the DeLorean, and hold on tight.

Romanticizing the Victim by Christina Allen Within each of us lives the potential to feel helpless and powerless as we navigate a world where our safety seems tenuous at best. Events are forever out of our control. Our foods are sprayed with pesticides and infused with hormones, and unscrupulous people hide in the anonymity of an overpopulated world, stealing our identities and scamming money out of our elders. Dangerous pedophiles stalk our children. It’s easy to see ourselves as victims. In fact, the Victim archetype is an integral part of the cultural paradigm we all have been taught to construct our worlds around unconsciously.

The seeds for this thinking start early. Most of us were raised on old stories of Heroes and Villains. We have Superman, Prince Charming and the X-Men all coming to save the day. We have the Wicked Witch, Evil Stepmother, and the Joker trying to destroy some form of our innocence. Implicit within each of these stories is a Victim that needs to be saved. They’ve been tied to train tracks, locked in stone towers, and fed poisoned apples. As we grow into adults, we hear these stories morph into victims of crime, natural disasters, and disease. In a very reflexive way, we romanticize the victim— we feel sorry for it, and want to save it from its pain. The Victim’s shadow side, however, is a seductive vortex of endless suffering. The mentality is one of helplessness and rage— and this creates more pain and suffering for people in the Victim’s life, continuing the cycle outward. In time, a victim often finds that from their position of helplessness they can procure more love, sympathy, and attention than they’d otherwise receive. This gives them an unexpected power that keeps them locked into the victim mentality. Rather than standing up and taking the next step themselves, they find it easier to ensnare unsuspecting Heroes into their story. At their worst, through the use of guilt, shaming, and blaming, they manipulate others into catering to their every need.

16

Pain happens, no doubt about it. We all have choices, however, as to how we work with it. The downside of being a victim is that ultimately, the power that comes from manipulating others erodes our self-esteem. Instead of fending for ourselves, we become dependent upon others to make or break our day. This perpetuates the cycle of helplessness and rage. To step out of this tangle, we must each take responsibility for our selves and let others take responsibility for theirs. We must work through our pain and find an appropriate outlet for our rage. If we’ve become fearful about being in the world, we must do the personal work involved in dismantling old fears and imprints and reclaiming our personal power. Sometimes we do need help. If we want to heal, however, we must ask for a hand up, not another handout to enable our lying down.

Watch your language! Are you personalizing an event and suffering in pain, or are you moving through it? How do you talk about what happens? Are you a victim of cancer, or a survivor? Did that person do something to you or did it just happen, and you were there? When we personalize it, we put it on and wear it. Holding onto pain makes us victims. We all have the power to navigate these waters of uncertainly, pain, and illness without resorting to helplessness and rage. Yes, there is whitewater at times. Yes, we can feel out of control and unsafe. Yes, people hurt us. We can flail on the rocks like a bug on its back or we can ask for a hand to turn over, find a raft and oars, and maneuver through it to stiller waters. Your choice— your power. Christina Allen’s work as an Intuitive, Healer, Teacher and Founder and Director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). IN The Metaphysics of Stone by Scott Brunson (Part 2) I wonder at times why I want to create and express through architectural art. I know I want to create something reflected by, and moved from, my home source and ancestors — and that home source is Earth. I want to capture a message from Earth, and believe I was inspired. None of our existence is totally our own. We’re nothing more than an extension of this planet, on a very high level, with all its grace and destruction. Humans, and life, need connection to keep moving forward— always forward— but there are vast signals and patterns that remind us to take care of ourselves and of others, and stop the extinction. It’s not just about that, though. It’s about the reason man is inspired to do anything, much less architecture. Why would anyone build a pyramid that could bankrupt a civilization, if they don’t believe?

Astronomy.

That’s why. The ancients were (and we are) mesmerized by the stars. There must be something out there, right? We can’t be alone, can we? It’s fascinating to learn why certain elements bond together and others don’t, like the connection between men and women as mates, lovers, friends, family. Nature is sexy, and I’m interested in representing the feminine and the masculine. My work has tried, and will continue to try, to glorify the universal code of connection, the connection between man and woman, heaven and Earth.

Fractals, maybe? I appreciate them, but they’re not the source, or the code to explore the relationship between wood, metal, stone, and glass— and the foundation in this is masculine, supporting the flow of the feminine, the woman. Certain sites and meridians seem to make regions on the planet unique for development, and Austin is one of them. Austin is unique — the Colorado River, the feminine, flows through the center of town, surrounded by stone and steel. The stone, the Earth, is masculine, and stone is the most sanctuaryious element there is — and, yes, I made up that word. MAGNESIUM Part eleven of a series Magnesium is usually thought of as a partner to calcium, and it’s a pretty good partnership. Magnesium has an impressive resume all by itself, though, particularly when it comes to mental health. For starters, Magnesium deficiency can cause restless sleep – waking up frequently and not getting to deep theta sleep, where your body does most of its repair work. Lack of sleep makes you stressed, anxious, and irritable during the day, and stress leads to – guess what? Yep. Magnesium deficiency. You can try to stave off some of that fatigue and stress with caffeine, carbs, sugary snacks, maybe a cocktail or two after work, but guess what all those contribute to? Yep. Magnesium deficiency.

Perfect storm, anyone? Need more? How about the fact that studies have shown that active schizophrenics have low Magnesium levels in the bloodstream, as do those going through the DT’s of alcohol withdrawal, tantrums, nervousness, irritability, depression, fatigue – even psychotic episodes and the new TV commercial fave, restless leg syndrome. Not just any old bottle of magnesium pills will do the trick, though. Magnesium chloride has been shown to work best, especially for sleep disorders, and Gary Hanna of Nature’s Pure Organics recommends a liquid colloidal form of pure Magnesium. Colloidal minerals are more easily absorbed by the body, and pure liquid colloidal Magnesium, diluted with distilled water so it doesn’t irritate skin tissue, can even be absorbed through the skin, one of the quickest delivery systems. Magnesium is also a chelating and detoxifying mineral and helps maintain an acid-alkaline balance, something that can be thrown out of whack by stress, and can be useful for treating constipation, premature ejaculation, and PMS, all of which can definitely create (and be created by) stress. (Some information in this article is based on Transdermal Magnesium Therapy, by Mark Sircus, O.M.D.) Nature’s Pure Organics carries crystal-clear Magnesium Chloride from 250 million-year-old geological deposits, along with alkaline water ionizers, bloodroot black salve, organic skincare products, and colloidal Iron, Sulfur, Angstrom VCZ, Vanadium, Magnesium, Copper, Chromium, Potassium, Zinc, Molybdenum – and Liquid Colloidal Trace Minerals Calcium Magnesium blend, for the perfect ratio of calcium and magnesium. (512) 264-4043, www.naturespureorganics.com Listen to Gary Hanna’s weekly radio program, About Your Health, Mondays at 6pm on the Logos Radio Network, 89.1 FM with co-host Leland Freeman.

QiGONG Goodness, gracious, great balls of Qi by Jeff Primack Qigong is the art of harnessing Qi (pronounced chee in Chinese) – internal energy or life force. Within minutes of Qi-breathing, many feel electricity in their hands – the Buzz, caused by increased levels of oxygen and ions that accelerate vibration of mitochondria and stimulate endorphins. The Qi Ball posture is like holding a magnetic orb of energy, ten times buzzier when hands and body are aligned correctly – the hands become like mirrors, reflecting light back and forth, building a higher magnetic charge. Kids love it, and some schoolteachers use it in their classrooms. It feels cool, improves energy, and helps resolve health issues. Working with Qi profoundly effects mental focus and puts you in charge of your own vibration and emotional state. The breathing techniques can actually get you high, giving you a euphoric rush of energy. They work well for war veterans, whose traumas are at vibrational levels.

Food affects qi vibration. Raw fruits and veggies give you enzymes with lots of Qi, but in Chinese medicine, they’re a source of dampness. Digestion is like a cauldron of water boiling over a fire— put too much water and raw food in the pot all at once, and it takes longer to boil. Studies have shown that cooking improves nutrient absorption and makes more energy available, and cooking hot meals is a big part of the Qigong program. Cooking, and not eating unto fullness, improves what we call digestive fire. A high-phytochemical diet rich in deep-colored foods, electron abundant anti-oxidants, and cooking with saturated fats is suggested, balanced with smoothies with organic veggies and fruits like strawberries and avocado— with its big seed included. Holding breath and skillfully exhaling, however, is the cornerstone of Qigong, exciting the vibration of your cells and bringing healing force. This ever-present force of Qi is spiritual, yet it belongs to no religion— and it’s available to all people willing to learn skillful breathing. Qi Activation, celebrating its 10th anniversary, comes to the Houston Convention Center August 22-25. Jeff Primack and a trained group of twenty instructors will host four days of Qigong training for $149, the largest Qigong event in Texas. Ticket reservations and information: (800) 298-8970, or visit www.QiActivation.com

BELIEF AND THE

GANGES by Michael Morris I was reading an article about Leon Logothetis and his world travels— accepting the hospitality of strangers and eventually bathing in the Ganges River, though he himself was not Hindu. The Ganges is a holy river in the Hindu faith, and has the expectation of cleansing all pain and suffering and washing away karma. Be thrown into the Ganges after death, it’s said, and you will not need to be reincarnated. It’s a very powerful spiritual panacea – a solution or remedy for all difficulties or diseases. How does expectation come about? When does it become faith— and then how does that faith affect reality, both our perception of it and the actualization? Can a faith or expectation become self-sustaining, able to provide proof of its existence after a certain quantity of belief?

One billion Hindus believing in the transformative power of the Ganges is a lot of expectation. As a Western non-Hindu, bathing in the Ganges— from a purely scientific perspective— has been classified as of 2011 as “unsafe for agricultural use, much less drinking and bathing.” Yet many Hindus, of those that manage it, bathe successfully and joyfully in the Ganges without apparent sickness or impediment. How? Maybe a combination of appreciation, expectation, and hopefulness helps those of any belief allow more well being. With the Ganges we have at least two competing beliefs — a Hindu absolute appreciation of the river, and a body of scientific evidence. Which belief dominates for each person as they bathe in the Ganges? What do you believe when bathing in the river of your daily life? Which beliefs are dominant? What are your expectations today? Do you want to try on a new belief that might serve you, or are you happy with what you’ve got? As my stepfather says, “Whatever floats your boat…” If you want to try a new belief in well being or fortify an existing one, keep your eyes and heart open, and find something that resonates with you. Michael Morris, Ph.D Physics, M.S.E. E.E., is a professional harpist and Native flute player available for live music during meditations, and a Radiance/Reiki practitioner along with his wife and beloved, Belinda. As a harp-viola duet, Angelic Strings, they have performed at over 800 weddings, and have peaceful harp and flute music and meditations available on CD and mp3 downloads. Love at first dance

by Sara Ballard I’d heard about Qoya from a friend. As soon as I looked at the website I was immediately drawn in. I felt a switch in my belly being flipped on. I knew I had to attend a class. I did, the very next Thursday.

Through movement we remember. We remember we are wise, wild, and free. I had no idea what that really meant as I unrolled my yoga mat for class. I just knew I loved music, I loved yoga, and I loved being around other women who wanted to feel wise, wild, and free. I was here because my body said yes without knowing all the details, so here I stood, bare feet, and sweaty palms. I have never taken a dance class in my life, except a Zumba class or two, I’d always considered myself to have two left feet, and an awkward body type. I was a bit concerned about all of this “free dancing.”

Would I look ridiculous? Would I know how to move my body if there wasn’t any choreography? What if I can’t figure it all out? The music began and the instructor gathered us all to start. We pulled an oracle card to begin, and started class by sharing with a partner. I immediately knew this was nothing like any movement class I’d done before. Dancing, breathing, circling, stretching, laughing, and sharing. So much goodness packed into seventy-five minutes. After dancing with our shadow side, I had tears streaming from my eyes. My body just kept repeating, “Thank you, thank you, thank you!” I felt whole. I felt home again in my body. I was extraordinarily present, aware, content, and sweaty. The other sisters were sharing in our collective experience, and I was officially hooked. This is not just a movement practice, it’s a way of living – in harmony with your body, your community, and your intuition. I finished that first class on a high. I knew during the very first song I was being called to share this with other women in Austin, and around the world. A year later I am still moved by every gathering every dance, every woman, every song. No matter what happens in life, the women of Qoya will be dancing! Sara Ballard is a Qoya Teacher and Transformational Guide. For class schedules, email QoyaAustin@yahoo.com or visit www.Sara-Ballard.com/Qoya

Dear Ashtara: Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I just retired from fulltime work as an RN. I want to take a few months off and wonder if I will find satisfying ‘as needed’ nursing work in the fall. I also wonder if I will connect with a romantic/companion partner. Thank you for all you do. Lynn, 66, Austin, TX Dear Lynn, The next position you take is going to be a wonderful and relaxing experience compared to what you have been doing. You will be working by October. If you want to find romance, shop online and you will probably get one. Your teacher, Metatron, will help you get what you need.

Dear Ashtara, I’ve rented several rooms in my house and was clear about wanting everyone to be responsible and clean up after themselves instantly, especially in the kitchen. Some of them do and some don’t. How can I inspire them to clean up so everything is nice for everyone? Amy, 38, Austin, TX Dear Amy, It’s very hard to create an atmosphere of perfection when there are different types of people living together. Therefore, have a group meeting once a month and speak about why it’s necessary to clean up after themselves. It seems most of them will be amenable. Continue to clean up after yourself and set a great example. Your highest teacher is Lord Maitreya.

Dear Ashtara, We bought some beautiful land in East Texas where we plan to retire. When should we plan to leave Austin? Pam, 47, Austin, TX Dear Pam, The best time to leave Austin is when you’re set and ready to go

26

with gusto. It seems by the time you get to that point you will have changed your minds about several things. You will see what I mean as time goes by. You will make wise and earnest decisions and your retirement will be delightful, playful and restful. Contentment will fill your every cell. You have the best attitude about the property that you purchased. Therefore, save your money and follow your spirit. Your highest angel is Michael.

Dear Ashtara, I feel like I have extra fluid in my body and need an overall cleanse for my organs. What would you recommend for me to do? Gwen, Austin, TX Dear Gwen, Thank you for asking. Juice the following: organic carrots, pineapple, red apples, and ginger if you like it, 3 x a week for 9 weeks. Also juice carrots, pineapple, oranges, a little lemon, celery, and purple cabbage, 2 x a week for 9 weeks. The angels are here to eradicate the fluid and heal you. Metatron is your top angel.

Private Sessions can be scheduled (in P person or phone) that include psychic, p medical, profound healings, questions m answered and more. THE NEW WAY FLOODS OF BROTHERHOOD by Deborah Antich The Wimberley and San Marcos floods are more than a month past, but made a lasting impression. Like the 2011 Bastrop Wildfires (even reading those words brings up feelings) we’re put to the test— again. When Mother Nature gives an opportunity to connect, reach out, fall freely into the flow of brotherhood— as she has in the past and surely will again – do you heed the call?

Texans have big hearts. That’s not news to anyone, but when nature cuts straight through Austin, washing out Lamar, we see firsthand what it’s capable of. Within hours, people were reaching out. How can I help? What can I do? Where are my services needed? It was a beautiful thing to witness, the coming together of Texans who, for a minute, didn’t argue about gay marriage, open carry, or political or social standpoints. When we need each other, none of that matters. It all falls away. There’s no time to argue, no words other than “What can I do?” Why do we need a disaster to reach out to someone with whom we absolutely cannot agree? Why does it take everything being stripped away to see each other as brothers and sisters, in this together? Hands down the story that inspired me most was Wimberley’s Class of 2015 graduation. Those seniors who lost so much— the ending to their high school experience, their senior trip (they spent it searching for the missing and clearing rubble)— didn’t waste time grieving, since others lost so much more. They rolled up their sleeves, got down to business, and did what had to be done – for themselves, the community, each other. When Graduation Day, their day, finally came— they danced. Watching the video, I bawled. They reminded me of the Whos in Whoville. After the Grinch stole everything, they woke up the next day to nothing and— they sang. Mother Nature couldn’t take Wimberley’s spirit, dedication, brotherhood, or their love. Thank you Wimberley Whos, for showing us that even in the face of despair, we can still dance.
