N a t i o n a l F i n a l s Ro d e o Moves To Arlington For 2020 The Wrangler® National Finals Rodeo (NFR) is moving to Texas in December 2020! Arlington’s Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers, will host the Wrangler NFR 2020 – the first non-baseball event at this extraordinary park. Event organizers confirmed the event will comply with all health and safety protocols for attendees. Wrangler NFR 2020 will take place Dec. 3-12, 2020, and fans can follow official PRCA updates throughout the event at www.prorodeo.com. “We are so pleased to be at this amazing stadium for the most celebrated event on the rodeo calendar,” said George Taylor, chief executive officer of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA). “We are committed to delivering a spectacular event for our fans and we are thrilled to be in Texas for it.” “We are excited for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to take place this year at Globe Life Field,” said Allen Montgomery, Vice President General Manager, Wrangler Western Wear. “The health and safety of the fans, cowboys and cowgirls is of the highest priority, and we are grateful to the participating organizations for their work to put together a comprehensive plan that will allow everyone to enjoy a safe and fun event.” Seats will be sold in groups of four with separation between groups. Contact-limiting measures, such as mobile tickets, have been implemented throughout the event. There will also be metal detector screenings and a no bag policy at entries on performance nights. Globe Life Field is encouraging all guests to check the CDC and the Texas Department of State Health Services websites for any guideline changes prior to the event. The Arlington and Fort Worth convention and visitors’ bureaus and sports commissions are rolling out the welcome for this one-of-a-kind event and both cities have worked hard to bring the Wrangler NFR to Globe Life Field. Nearby Fort Worth will also play host to the Wrangler NFR 2020 experience, as the annual PRCA Convention will be held November 30 to December 3, 2020, in addition to the Cowboy Christmas

and a slew of other fan-favorite events. The NFR was born in Texas and the first three years of the event were held at the Dallas State Fairgrounds beginning in 1959. Years later, the event moved to Las Vegas and has been staged at the Thomas & Mack Center at UNLV in Las Vegas since 1985. That venue is not available for live

entertainment with fans this year due to coronavirus restrictions in Nevada. The PRCA began looking for an alternate venue earlier in the summer. The State of Texas, the Texas Rangers and Globe Life Field stepped up. Ultimately, this has been a thoughtful partnership between Texas, Globe Life Field, the cities of Arlington and Fort Worth, the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, Visit Fort Worth, and the Sports Commissions of both Arlington and Fort Worth. “The State of Texas

knows how to do this,” Taylor said. “We’ve been impressed with how well this has come together for our rodeo cowboys and rodeo fans.” The Wrangler NFR is a 10-day event that includes the fan-favorite Cowboy Christmas as well as the PRCA National Convention. The schedule also includes nightly Buckle Presentations, Benny Binion’s World Famous Wrangler NFR Bucking Horse Sale, the PRCA Awards Banquet and Gala and the Pro Rodeo League of Women Style Show and Luncheon.

Breaking It Down With Speed Williams Dealing with not winning USTRC Finals We just got home from the USTRC Finals in Ft. Worth and I’m happy to say they had a huge turnout. There were 300 to 400 add on teams in most ropings. Some of the ropings paid $30,000 to $40,000 for $200 or $300 entry fees. When you have over 500 teams in a roping there are a lot of variables that need to happen in your favor to be successful. My son started roping in the #16, heeling for Kaleb Driggers, and roped all the way down to the #9 where he headed. Hali roped in the #14 down and heeling in the #9 and #8. We never made it to the short round. During my career, over the years, I’ve seen times where you actually rope well but make a couple of baubles… one goes over the hip, you lose a dally, lose a leg. There are a lot of little things that can keep you from winning. Hali did not break a barrier or miss a steer. Six heelers in a row all missed for her. She never made it to the second arena. Gabe had a couple of runs where he was clean on two, and then headers would miss the third, lose a leg, or draw a tough steer. I thought Gabe roped smarter at the USTRC Finals and accomplished what we’ve been work-

ing on and that was to not throw fast every time. He needed to ride his horse and try to rope every steer during a long week of roping. Him being a boy, he wanted to enter everything, so he also roped in the jackpots in the third arena. Most of the time I don’t tell my kids yes or no. I give my opinion, which in this case was, “We probably need to stay away from the outside jackpots and focus on the ropings where you have a chance to win big money.” I understand his mentality. He wanted to rope at every opportunity. He never even made the short round outside in the jackpots. It’s very hard to stay focused all day, much less when you put more obstacles in your path. When it was all said and done, I asked if he thought it was smart. He replied, “No sir.” My goal is to raise my kids to make educated decisions. So, a lot of times I let them make mistakes and then we talk about it afterwards. Later in life there will be more important decisions than whether you’re roping too many times in one day. Overall, I was extremely happy with my son’s heeling. He lost some legs and missed his dally but threw some great loops and did a good job of being patient. But he wasn’t able to put all the runs together with one partner. I can remember being young and heeling

terrible but catching four with one partner and winning the roping. Then I had days of heeling outstanding but missing the one for money and not winning a dime. My wife tries to film all the runs and walks back from one arena to the other. When we’re done we watch the video and talk about the runs and what we should have done and what we’ll do different the next time. My goal in life is to prepare my kids to make educated decisions. So, I often give them leeway to make their own decisions. That way they understand the consequences of bad choices while I’m still here and able to guide them in the right direction. I’m not saying that Gabe would have had a better chance if he had not roped in the jackpots. But after you go all week and don’t win a dime, it may have been better to put more effort and concentration on the ropings that paid $20,000 than the jackpots that paid $2,000. It’s a little different if you’re done and don’t have anything to do for three or four hours. It was gratifying to watch my kids and clients rope at the USTRC Finals and see them ride and control their horses so well, as a result of their work on the Speed Trainer. It made me feel good for my clients to ask where the Speed Trainer was so they could get on it and do their drills before competing. One of the main reasons most team ropers struggle to improve is horsemanship - how they ride their horse and swing their rope. If used

correctly and regularly, the Speed Trainer can shave years off what it normally takes to learn to ride and rope correctly. When learning while roping horseback there’s just too much going on at once to focus on mistakes like using your left hand for balance or your legs to hold on with. After watching over 5,000 teams go this week and watching ropers make the same mistakes over and over, it boils down to it’s hard to improve your roping if you cannot ride and guide your horse correctly. The Speed Trainer is also very beneficial to work on fundamentals for those who don’t want or need to make a lot of runs on their good horses. It’s great for beginners to get their habits down correctly before running steers in the jackpot and making mistakes that could have been prevented. This Christmas Day we will be giving a Speed Trainer away again. To qualify you just have to submit a video of yourself roping on a Speed Trainer. Upload and submit the video at www.speedtrainergiveaway.com. Please check out the website for the rules. October 2020

R&M Rodeo Photos Three more months and 2020 is in the rear view mirror. I’m not sure about y’all but I can’t wait for 2021 to roll into view. I’ve driven the stretch of IH-10 from San Antonio to Columbus for over 30 years. I know every exit, pot hole and old building along the route. It doesn’t matter if I’m coming or going, the boring part from Schulenburg to Seguin is the same both ways. Once I get to Schulenburg or Seguin I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I’ve just driven from somewhere to somewhere and went thru nowhere to get there. I’m not downing any of those towns in the dead zone. Flatonia, Waelder, Harwood, Luling and Kingsbury are all nice towns but the stretch of IH-10 that they comprise of is the most boring part of the road on my trip that I’ve been enduring

for over 30 years. If I’m going west I consider Schulenburg to be 2019. It’s a distant memory by the time I get to Harwood. Seguin or 2021 can’t get here fast enough but I still have to get through November and December (also known as Luling and Kingsbury). Just like 2020, there are bright spots to this stretch of highway. Just like Bucee’s in Luling there were a few nice things that happened this year. Maybe not as nice as Bucee’s restrooms, but still nice enough. To top things off for 2020 I decided that a pandemic was not enough torture for me so I decided I wanted to teach public school. I was already teaching at Blinn Jr College but that was too easy. I needed more stress in my life during this pandemic. I needed 150 kids glaring

at me from their desks each day. I needed endless meetings, emails and professional learning to make me feel a little more wanted. To achieve all of this I became a teacher. It’s only been 6 weeks but so far it’s pretty cool. I teach construction science and I my kids are really into what we are doing. I had an annonymous note left in my box the other day from a student. It said that I was their favorite teacher so far this year. Again, we’ve only been in school for seven weeks so there is always a chance I can be replaced, but hey, it’s a start and I’ll take it. I have to take my wife for mexican food and margs to make her write me a note like that!

Come on 2021, Big Al’

Wrangler National Finals Breakaway To Premiere At NFR In conjunction with the 2020 Wrangler® National Finals Rodeo (NFR) at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, women ropers will compete for the first-ever world championship: The Wrangler® National Finals Breakaway Roping (NFBR) and a $200,000 purse at this three-day event.

just a spectacular opportunity for the sport of breakaway, the sport of rodeo, and for women and girls coming up.”

Arlington Mayor Jeff Williams praised the decision to name a world champion cowgirl roper at this year’s event.

“I couldn’t be prouder that the PRCA has selected Arlington for the inaugural Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping in December,” Williams said. “We can’t wait to crown the world champion breakaway cowgirl at Globe Life Field, the new gold standard venue not only for Major League Baseball but also for many special events, especially rodeo!” Tickets for the 2020 Wrangler NFR will go on sale to

the public September 25, 2020, at www.texasrangers.com/NFR. Tickets for the Wrangler NFBR will go on sale at a later date. For fans who are unable to attend the Wrangler NFBR at Globe Life Field in December, the three performances will be live streamed on the Wrangler Network (www.wranglernetwork.com) and will be rebroadcast at a later date on The Cowboy Channel.

Breakaway roping is one of the hottest events sanctioned by the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA), and the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) is proud to share the venue with some of the best cowgirls in rodeo for this event. The PRCA and the WPRA have been working together for the last year to promote breakaway roping and grow the sport. “We are thrilled that we’ve been able to move breakaway roping to this point and so appreciative of the good people at Wrangler, for helping us make this possible,” said George Taylor, chief executive officer of the PRCA. “We’re giving our fans everything they wanted and more at the Wrangler NFR this year. This 10-day event – the Super Bowl of rodeo – will be a spectacular fan experience.” The Wrangler NFBR will take place over three days during the Wrangler NFR this year. Cowgirls competing for this first world championship will be in the arena December 8-10, 2020. The Wrangler NFBR will be a separate ticketed event from the Wrangler NFR. “We are excited about this new chapter in the storied history of the Women’s Professional Rodeo Association,” said Doreen Wintermute, CEO of the WPRA. “We are thankful for our partnership with the PRCA to grow this women’s discipline and this is a huge step to have this inaugural Wrangler National Finals Breakaway Roping event alongside the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.” “We’re a newer event and trying to earn our stripes like anybody else,” said Jordan Fabrizio, a top-ranked breakaway roper. “To have the opportunity to be in that environment, in that venue and compete at that level it’s

WOMEN’S RODEO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP RELOCATED TO TEXAS WITH CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND BEING FEATURED DURING PBR WORLD FINALS Champions To Be Crowned In AT&T Stadium With Qualifying Rounds Held In Will Rogers Memorial Center WCRA (World Champions Rodeo Alliance) and PBR (Professional Bull Riders) today announced that the Women’s Rodeo World Championship will be relocated from Las Vegas to Fort Worth, Texas due to COVID-19 restrictions in the State of Nevada. The $750,000 event paying equal money in all disciplines will be hosted November 8-12 (qualifying rounds) at the Will Rogers Memorial Center with the final six from each of the four disciplines competing at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas alongside the PBR World Finals in the Championship Round November 13-15. According to WCRA President Bobby Mote; every effort was exhausted to keep the event in Las Vegas but due to the state’s COVID restrictions for live events the organization was unable to proceed with confidence. “Fortunately, this particular relocation is a huge game changer allowing the championship round to run within the PBR’s marquee event making it that much more historic,” said Mote. “Crowning the champions in one of the most iconic stadiums in the United States during the PBR World Finals continues to raise the bar for women’s rodeo and put them on one of the largest platforms in all of Western Sports.” Athletes competing in four disciplines—breakaway roping, barrel racing, and team roping (heading and heeling) will compete for their piece of a historical $750,000 purse along will an allaround $20,000 bonus. Champions in each discipline will walk away with a minimum of $60,000 each. “As WCRA continues to lead the industry charge in women’s professional rodeo we are proud to offer equal money in all disciplines and to feature their efforts during the PBR’s marquee event as well to millions on a CBS Sports Network Telecast,” said Mote. “This event will place these athletes onto a historic stage. A revolutionary event with this level of payout and visibility in women’s rodeo has never been done before and it is only year one.” Open entries for the

COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM

championship event are open and have been extended until October 25 at 11:59 p.m. CT. Entry fees are $750 and are taken on entrytool.com. Athletes can nominate their efforts with WCRA and earn points for the WRWC Leaderboard

(W20) until the extended deadline of October 18 at 11:59 p.m. CT. The

top four ranked athletes in each discipline on the leaderboard will automatically advance to the main event. More information about the event including payout, overview schedule and format can be found at www.womensrodeoworldchampionship.com or contact support@wcrarodeo.com. Since launching in May of 2018, the WCRA and its partners have awarded more than $7,700,000 in new money to rodeo athletes.

“I got my start in rodeo and barrel racing because my mom did it,” Mcleod said. “My mom said from the time I was a baby they would put me on a horse, and I would start smiling, and if they took me off I would cry. My mom tells stories about how when I was a toddler, she would ride a horse and pony me on my pony, and I would fall asleep and fall off, and cry, not because I was hurt, but because I wasn’t back on my pony yet.” Her mom is none other than Michelle Mcleod, fourtime Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier. Like mother like daughter, the youngest Mcleod has followed in her mom’s footsteps and is forever grateful for everything she has been able to learn from having a professional barrel racer and trainer in the family. “First of all, hard work is everything,” Mcleod said. “She qualified for her first NFR at the age of 43, and she always said that one day her hard work would pay off, and it did. From the beginning, she has taught us horsemanship and how to truly take care of your horses and how to adjust your riding to be able to win on several different horses. She has consistently taught us over the years to soak up knowledge from every person you can and to never stop learning.” Mcleod currently competes on an eight-year-old gelding, Rockette Scientest or

“From the start, my mom trained horses, so we didn’t have just one horse we rode,” “We rode multiple, and they came and went often, so in order to win we had to figure out how to ride that specific horse, and ultimately, I think that’s what molded me into the rider I am today.” - Lindsey Mcleod By Krista Lucas Wynn Rodeo cowboys and cowgirls book long hours to make their dreams come true, whether it is on the road, practicing or competing. are always many variables that can come up in the sport of rodeo, throwing a wrench in well-prepared plans. That could not be any truer for the United Professional Rodeo Association’s

she owns with her fiancé Wyatt Muggli. There have been many talented horses pass through Mcleod’s barn over the years. She experienced success in high school on Kellies Chick, also known as Skye, who carried her to a National High School Rodeo Association barrel racing title in 2014. Although it is hard to pick just one favorite, she can think of several that have left a special place in her heart. “My top five favorites would have to be Rods Last Ladybug, JR Naughty Jet, HP Rocket Ta Fame, StreakinFlingnDisco, and In The Nick A Time,” Mcleod said. “All these horses have a unique story that goes with them and why I got to ride them, and I think that’s what made them so special and my favorites.” Riding multiple horses throughout her young career has made her adaptable to many different kinds of running styles. Learning horse-

manship from a young age has helped contribute to this. “From the start, my mom trained horses, so we didn’t have just one horse we

rode,” Mcleod said. “We rode multiple, and they came and went often, so in order to win we had to figure out how to ride that specific horse, and ultimately, I think that’s what molded me into the rider I am today.” She also believes it is important to continuously learn and expand her horizons in order to adjust to different types of horses. “Often I hear girls say, ‘Oh, I can’t ride that, that’s just not my style’,” she said. “Personally, I don’t believe in styles, I believe in adjustment.” As if the rodeo life is not busy enough, Mcleod has also chosen to expand her horizons in school as well. She is currently in nursing school and will graduate in 2021. “Honestly, I do not know how I balance it all with nursing school, working, training horses, and now planning a wedding. A lot of late nights and early mornings,” Mcleod said. “I’ve always been a person that doesn’t like to stand still, meaning to not have anything to do, so I guess I just like to always be doing stuff. I have big goals, and that’s what ultimately keeps me going on the days where I am super overwhelmed.”

Mcleod and Muggli will wed October 2, 2021 on his family ranch. They officially met at a UPRA rodeo in Henrietta, Texas in 2017 when she asked him to help walk her horse up the alleyway, and the rest is history. She has a lot to look forward to, including another trip to the Cinch United Finals Rodeo. “This year is my second time to qualify, and after last year I set a goal to win the year end so I am aiming toward that. What most do not know is the UPRA rodeos are like mini pro rodeos, and we haul dang near just as much as the pro people do,” Mcleod said. “My fiancé and I calculated it last year, and I think we went to 50 plus rodeos. It is a huge accomplishment just to make the finals, and I am so grateful, so I just want to make the best runs I can, and hopefully come out on top.” The Oklahoma transplant from Texas knows how to make the most of what she has and is more focused than ever before. With a lot of life changing events happening to the young cowgirl, she will continue to keep her eye on the prize.

“God’s Family”

From Pastor Randy Weaver The Bible tells us that the reason God created the entire universe is that He wanted a family. God is love and He wanted to love us. So, He created us specifically to be a part of His family. He wants that family to last forever in heaven for those who choose to say, “I want to be a part of Your family.” Hebrews 2:10 says, “God is the one who made all things. All Things are for His glory. He (God) wanted to have many children share His glory.” God created the human race because He knew that some of them would choose to love Him and they would become a part of His forever family. Everybody’s created by God, but not everyone is in the family of God. You have to make a choice to be in His family. When I was born I automatically became a part of the human race. I didn’t have any choice. The moment I popped out I became a part of the human race. But I didn’t become a part of a family until somebody chose to take me home with them. If you choose to become part of God’s family there are some family responsibilities. The Bible tells us “God’s unchanging plan has always been to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ.” You’re not adopted in until you choose to be adopted in – then God says “I’m writing so that you will know how to live in the family of God. That family is the church of the living God.” The family of God is the church, it is the spiritual family of God. If you choose to join God’s family, as I said, there are some family responsibilities. The number one responsibility is this: you have to learn to love everybody else in God’s family. John 13 - “Jesus said, I’m giving you a new commandment: love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for each other will prove to the world that you are My disciples.” One of the ways you know that you are in the family of God is that you love other people in the family of God. You love other believers. You love other followers of Christ. Why does God want us to love each other? Because it makes us like Him. God is love and God wants us to be like Him, like the Father, like the Son. When you learn to love other people, you’re practicing one of the things you’re

COWBOYSPORTSNEWS.COM

going to do in heaven. What does God want you to do while you’re here on earth? God says first I want you to learn how to love Me. Then second, while you’re on earth, I’ve put you there to learn how to love other people. The Bible calls this fellowship. The deepest level of love starts with sharing. Then you learn to belong, that’s a commitment. Then you go deeper through serving. If you want your marriage to be strong, start serving God together. But the deepest level of love is what the Bible calls the fellowship of suffering. Love grows deepest when we suffer together. How do

you experience the deepest level of intimacy, the fellowship of suffering? How do you get to the deepest level of love that takes you through the crisis? You have to stand with other people in a crisis. What level are you in God’s family? Let me give you four words: Friendship, Membership, Partnership, and Kinship. These are the four levels of love. The four levels of fellowship. Sharing together, that’s friendship. Have you started a friendship with God yet? If you haven’t, you need to get to know Christ today. How about belonging together. That’s membership. How about serving together? Have you found a place of service? Then kinship. Suffering together. How do you know if you’re in God’s family? The invitation is open to everybody but there’s one common condition. Galatians 3:26 says, “You

are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” How do you get in God’s family? Put your faith in Christ Jesus today. That is the first step in joining this awesome family of God.
