Beautiful cover (May edition)! Loved this edition. Sharon Henderson Givens via Facebook
My dear, lifelong friend May Etie recently sent me the January issue, and I just finished reading your column with tears welling up. I, too, wonder where the years have gone as I look upon my grandchildren. Yes, it never stops; the same feelings surface as you gaze upon your grandchildren. As I’ve aged and lost dear friends, family, and recently my husband, I am holding dear to these memories and cherishing each moment with them. And, it’s true; it’s those simple memories that are so dear--even the ones like closing your eyes as you walk past their messy bedroom! I look forward to reading the rest of your publication. Community…
...and Winning!
Community….it’s what we do is the slogan we adopted at Postcards Magazine several years ago. We are passionate about it, because we are passionate about communities—and togetherness (one more time, Poncho!). Communities bound together impact the lives of our children and each other. Some of the ways we love to enjoy and share with our community are ticket giveaways. If you are a Facebook user, be sure to visit our page, LIKE us, and follow us. There are announcements posted here about our contest winners, along with updates and community activity information that may have come in after our print deadline. When summer rolls around in Texas, many of us head to the water to cool off. Check out our story in this issue about a true “Texas Treasure” – Schlitterbahn! We will be giving away tickets to Schlitterbahn this summer. If you’d like a chance to win, go to our Facebook page – Postcards from the Piney Woods – and like and comment! Share our page with your friends, too. You get another chance to win every time you like, share, comment, and submit on our page! We met a young lady recently at one of our community events. She was thrilled to receive Visit Our

tickets to Schlitterbahn, and she couldn’t wait for her mom and dad to schedule the time to take their family mily to Galveston for a fun-filled day. We had a blast getting to know her. We looked up a short time later, and here she came prepared to do a video “interview”” with me to help people get to know w US better! How cool is that? It’s one of thee reasons we do what we do—because in n a great community…we’re all winners! Until next time ~ Karen P.S. In case you missed the memo, our advertisers are first rate! How about looking through ads in this issue with the intention of finding a Father’s Day gift for dear old Dad? It’s another win/win for community!!!

By Mike Yawn Photos by Jessica Rodriguez Jesus Moroles worked under the great Luis Jimenez, but he considers his father his greatest influence. He has completed works in the world’s great urban centers—Washington, DC; Shanghai; Houston; New York—but he grew up in Texas and currently lives in Rockport. His works beautify our local community, gracing the grounds of the Wynne Home and the interior of the Performing Arts Center, but they have also appeared in the Smithsonian and the White House. Indeed, Moroles was invited to the White House in 2008 to receive the National Medal of Arts from President Bush, who recognized the artist for his “enduring achievements as a sculptor of stone.” After some 50 years working on cutting stone, Moroles’ body of work cuts across cultures, geography, and generations, underscoring the notion that art is a universal language.
dirty. We took apart motors, and his philosophy was that of a doctor, to analyze things. If a door doesn’t close, you don’t just slam it. You take a look at it and figure out what’s wrong. But people don’t look. How did you apply that to art? I loved doing the art, and my parents encouraged me and sent me to YMCA art classes. Our teacher said, “Why don’t you come to my private classes?” She liked me, and her private lessons were $15 an hour, but she knew we couldn’t afford that. She said, “Just don’t tell anyone, and we’ll do a dollar a day.” I was fortunate to have people take me under their wings, push me, and nurture me. Why did she pick you? Did she recognize a natural talent?
Tell us about growing up and your influences.
No. I don’t think I was a better artist. I think I worked harder at My father Jose Moroles was my biggest influence and a hard act to it. I think anyone can do art. That’s what I wanted to do, although I follow. He was a go-getter, and he made me fix things and get my hands Granite wall/bench in front of Wynne Home in Huntsville
The Houston Police Memorial, Jesus Moroles (1990) didn’t always know that. At one time I thought I wanted to do math, getting my associate’s degree, and from there went to the University but it was really art all along. of North Texas in Denton. Nevertheless, I’ve heard you say math saved your life. That’s right. While in high school, Captain Gilliam was the math teacher, and he was a retired naval navigations officer. I enjoyed taking classes from him, and I took trig, geometry, calculus, and other college preparation classes from him. I wasn’t planning to go to college; I just liked his classes. When I graduated, I received my draft notice from the army, but the same day, I went down to the air force recruiting office. They gave me a test, and I scored high in math. That score helped me get in the air force, because they could put me in what was called a “critical career field. My classmates went in the army, and they didn’t make it back from Vietnam. I was able to work as an illustrator in the air force. They only had two positions, but I got one of them. I did illustrations for their publications. What did you do when you got out? I went to El Centro Community College in Dallas. I didn’t know how college worked exactly, so the first semester I signed up for 12 hours of art. I loved it. The next semester, I signed up for 12 more hours of art. Halfway through the semester, they called me in and said, “What are you doing? Who is your advisor? I said, “What’s an advisor? So, I got rerouted into English and history and science. I ended up
You had your first major show in 1980 or so. What did you do in the mid-to-late 1970s? I met Luis Jiminez. He did a workshop at my school, and we made a connection. I worked with him for a year, and the first piece of granite I sold brought me good money. Jimenez said, “You know, you are already an artist. When you work with a master, you’re just an extension of their little finger. You help them however they need it, and you try to learn by osmosis. I watched everything he did. I learned from his work ethic, and the other things he did well, while also striving to develop my own strengths. After you worked for Jimenez, you went to Italy. How formative was that for you? It was amazing. It’s filled with history, the work of the masters. I lived in the same town as Michaelangelo. I used tools that were handforged; I lived by a castle. It was also transformative in that I was in a car accident that almost killed me. I was going to have dinner with Isamu Naguchi, the world’s most famous sculptor (and my hero). The accident prevented me from meeting him, but because I was unable to work, I had time to travel and see things. I actually experienced those works of art in Venice and Rome and Florence.

Anita's Mexican Restaurant Great authentic mexican food!
I went, for example, to Altissimo to see the white marble. The mountain is white, punctuated by shrubbery and grass, and the ground is rough. But where people have walked up the mountain, it is smooth and worn down with toe-holds where people have stepped. And when I first saw it, it was wet from morning dew, and it looked polished. It was man and nature working together; it was beautiful, and it was what I wanted to do. You returned to a more mundane setting in the U.S.

Yes, but it was nice. I had previously met a man named Rodman Montgomery from Waxahachie, Texas, and he used to make tombstones. He let me use his old workshop, and I moved in. I used his old stones, cut them into art, and they sold. It gave me a jump on my career, and I have always appreciated that man. How did you get in the Amarillo Art Center, one of your first big shows?

I called them. I said, “I don’t know if you remember me, but I was here with Luis Jimenez‌â€? I left photographs with the Center. The director called me, and he asked if I wanted to do a show. I didn’t have any work at that time to show, but I was going to do the show. People don’t say, “Yes!â€? They think of reasons they can’t do things. I said, “Yes.â€? I took the opportunity, and I made something out of it. A lot of people don’t. You had one month to create art? Yes. I had some works that were show-ready, but not enough for a show. I got busy. On a technical level, how do you cut granite?
Community workshop at the Wynne Home
With a big saw. When I was working in Waxahachie, I took money from my sales, and I bought a gigantic bridge saw that works an area of 18 feet by 18 feet. It was 30-40 years old when I bought it. I still use that saw. It’s not the equipment, it’s what you do with it. One piece I had was long, and I hit a bump in the road on the way to deliver it. It broke. The break was pretty straight, so I layered some granite between the two halves, giving it some horizontal lines. I had the piece done the next week, and it was chosen to be placed at the White House! You incorporate water into a lot of your structures, including one at the CHSS Building on SHSU’s campus. That ties into my concept of nature and man. You have the rock and water (which makes everything grow), and you make it into art. You do a lot of large pieces. Is that something you took from Naguchi? Yes, he was amazing. I have a running fight with engineers. I think they are full of baloney. They are supposed to tell you how you can do something, and they end up telling you why you cannot do it. At times, I’ve had to go into the ceiling and run I-beams to re-support the roof so a heavy object could hang, but you make it happen. What’s your largest piece? In Shanghai, I did a plaza that’s fifty-one pieces. The Houston Police Memorial was a large piece.

Yes. I went to the site, and I thought, “I don’t want to do a police officer holding a little kid’s hand with a sign that says, ‘We Protect.’ I wanted to do something different, something that attracted people.
I dug into the ground, like clay, and I made a mound, plateaus, and stairs going into the ground. It’s a pyramid, one that grows out of the ground. It’s a maze, too, because the stairs don’t go all the way up; you have to find your way around to the top, where there is a fountain. Would you care to offer any interpretations of it?
Denver Airport, and he was also losing his eyesight, so he couldn’t see as well. It’s tough. Each time I’ve been injured, I’ve come out like gangbusters, feeling as though I’ve had a second chance. Your work spans multiple media. Some of your work doubles as musical instruments, and you often incorporate dance and other forms of art into your work.
I don’t like to explain my art, because I don’t want to intrude upon others’ interpretations, but it can be seen from many perspectives. I don’t think we can be a good society without culture. I grew up From the sky, it’s the shape of a cross. I wanted to push the earth in in a place and a time when art was part of the everyday curriculum. and out, I wanted to go down, and up. How many pieces have you done, total?
What would you think of such a place in Huntsville?
About 5,000 pieces. You often have to go on scaffolds and work on large, heavy pieces. Can you discuss the dangers involved? It can be dangerous. I’ve fallen off a 30-foot sculpture onto concrete. I’ve almost died four or five times in my lifetime while working on art. Jimenez died doing a large piece for the

Huntsville has a lot of art. Art can bring people to a town, provide nice places for students and residents to spend time, and make the community a nicer place to live. I think things happen in their own time. If the stars align, big projects can result, reflecting what man, nature—and a community—can do, working together.

Update on
Boys & Girls Club Update Written By Winston Spencer, Jr. Photos by K2 Images The Boys and Girls Club of Walker County is always breaking new ground. In addition to cultivating young hearts and minds, they’re encouraging the community’s greatness through the groundbreaking of a new multi-million dollar facility. “What’s going on right now is the bidding process. Contractors are currently submitting their bids to complete this project, said Michelle Spencer, Executive Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Walker County. “We’re receiving bids from all over; it’s on the city’s website. Anyone with the credentials is welcome to submit a bid. This is only phase 1. The April 2 groundbreaking was the first step toward building the gymnasium that will convert into a safe room in the event of disasters. Administrative offices will also be housed in the facility. “A number of grants are

Also, we’ve been trying to educate the public on ways to give to the campaign, Spencer said. “Currently, we’ve raised over $2.6 million through private donation, philanthropic endeavors, and FEMA funds. $500,000 is still needed to complete this phase of the project. The “Club, as it is affectionately known, serves as a safe place for children at a minimal cost. Meals, mentoring, educational support, and life skills are stressed. “It’s just a great place for our kids to learn and acquire other skills that will, in the long run, uplift the entire community, Spencer

Colonel Robert Simonton Gould Robert Simonton Gould was a Confederate Army officer, lawyer, judge, and law professor. He was born in North Carolina, then moved with his widowed mother to Alabama and graduated from
the University of Alabama in 1844. He taught mathematics and studied law. He opened a law office in Mississippi before moving to Centerville, Texas in 1850. He was elected district attorney, then judge, but resigned to raise a battalion for the Confederate Army. Following the war, Gould served on the Texas Supreme Court, including a period as Chief Justice. He was one of the first two professors of law at the University of Texas, teaching for over 20 years before resigning due to illness and dying soon thereafter. He was remembered as a hard-working, gentle man and as a sympathetic and respected professor. The marker is 2 miles south of Buffalo on US79.
Colonel Robert Simonton Gould - (1826-1904) Born in North Carolina. Educated at University of Alabama. Came to Texas in 1850. Practiced law in Centerville. Served as the first district attorney, then as judge in the Old 13th Judicial District. Represented Leon County as member of Secession Convention, 1861. Afterward, as this county voted 534 to 82 in favor of secession, raised locally troops which as Co.
B, became nucleus for 6th Texas Cavalry (or Gould’s) Battalion, in the Confederate Army. First as major, then as colonel, Gould led battalion for 4 years in Louisiana and Texas. Saw duty in Red River campaign to prevent invasions of Texas, fighting in the 1864 repulses of Federals at Mansfield and Pleasant Hill. At Jenkins Ferry, Ark., Col. Gould had his horse killed under him. After the war he was reelected judge of the
Old 13th District, but was removed in 1867 by military authorities in charge of reconstruction in Texas. Appointed assistant justice of Texas Supreme Court in 1874, he was afterwards elected, and served until Dec. 31, 1882 (being chief justice in 1880-1882). Was named, along with Governor O. M. Roberts, as one of two first professors of law at the University of Texas, holding tenure 18831899. Died in Austin.

I specialize in retro or vintage signs. A lot of businesses like it because it gives the customers a better feeling... a sense of security. It puts them in the mindset of the good old days, so to speak.
By Winston Spencer, Jr. Photos by K2 Images With the advent of the computer and digital age, signs have become mass-produced. Over the past 30 years, the sign painting trade has been displaced by technology. However, with mass-production comes mass sameness. Fonts designed to resemble hand-painted lettering were never the same. Businesses with a desire to stand out began to seek out traditional hand-painted signs. One of the leaders in this revival of sorts is Ken Manthei (pronounced man-tie). His passion has culminated into more requests for his work than he can shake a brush at. The demand for his old-fashioned art and skill has taken Manthei all over the state of Texas—from the legendary Dixie Chicken in College Station to Roadhouse Relics in Austin to the famous Goode Company restaurants of Houston, not to mention the popular McKenzie’s Barbeque and Mr. Hamburger in Huntsville. All have profited from the quality of Manthei’s handcrafted authentic work of art.
practiced a lot over a number of years and became good at it. When I was maybe 12 or 13 years old, I discovered that I enjoyed this more than the average person. I was just having fun. Later it was more of a showoff thing. Like hey, look what I did. What did you draw in the beginning? I drew a lot of airplanes, army tanks, and war stuff. You know, I was a kid. World War II was fairly recent, and many of the nation’s fathers served or were veterans. It was a big deal back then, and still is today to some extent. I loved to draw caricatures and comic strips, too. I still have a few brushes from the World War II era that were used at one time to hand paint fighter bomber nose art. What was the transition from conventional art to sign painting like?
Even though I became really good at drawing First and foremost, you believe a sign painter is at an early age, I thought lettering wouldn’t be an artist. Do you have any children? I have two sons—Allen and Jeffery—and three daughters—Marissa, Chelsea, and Jane. My youngest, Jane, is my apprentice. Were you surprised she took up the art? No, not at all. She has this ability to concentrate really well. I believe she really has talent. I had to work hard, but she works hard and has talent. Why do you say that? She has this ability to reproduce photographs—in particular, her series of rock and roll artists and her drawings of the Beatles. I’ve taught her things, but she really has talent. She is great at lettering, too. She’s still learning, and I still have a lot to teach her. Lettering, in a lot of ways, is a lot harder than drawing. You’ve been married to your lovely wife Frances for more than 20 years. How did she affect your art?

Wow, where do I begin? I’m not saying I’d be a homeless street person, but close. It was like night and day after I married her. I felt I was good, but had my doubts about myself. She’s always been my biggest supporter, critic, and everything. She’s a smart lady. She’s kept me organized. I can’t begin to tell you how much she’s meant to me. Watching Ken work is fascinating. He now paints primarily on the outside of the glass. He used to paint on the inside, because it is more protected and lasts longer. Now, most glass is tinted (even if you can’t see it with the naked eye), and it changes the look of the colors. Some things he does both inside and outside, and some techniques—like on the sign for A Nitsch in Time—make it look 3D. He uses just soup and veggie cans as his working containers —nothing fancy. He stores his brushes in a tin with a little motor oil to keep the bristles flexible. He’s a lefty, so he works from right to left. Ken enjoys the painting—he doesn’t listen to music, but sometimes people stop and chat with him while he’s working. You get the feeling this artist gets a lot of satisfaction seeing his work all over town. So do we, Ken.

Schlitterbahn New Braunfels
By Winston Spencer, Jr.
www.schlitterbahn.com
Submitted Photos For 17 years running, Schlitterbahn, originating in New Braunfels, has remained the number one waterpark on the planet. This themed waterpark and year-round resort has risen to become one of the most popular summertime destinations for families in the United States. Centrally located between Austin and San Antonio, it has 40 water attractions on more than 70 acres. Situated along the banks of the spring-fed Comal River, it’s also arguably one of the most kid-friendly settings in the country. In keeping with the region’s original German roots, the name “Schlitterbahn was actually derived from a combination of two German words. Schlitter meaning slippery and bahn meaning road. It all started out as the dream of Billy and Bob Henry. “What many people don’t realize is that it started as a resort, said spokeswoman Winter Prosapio. “They purchased what was known at that time as the Landa Resort. Later, they wanted a place for their children to have fun. They looked out over a lengthy area of trees spring-watered in the Texas Hill Country. Having had three children, the Henrys envisioned and later placed a tube chute for their children to play in a wholesome environment.
“By the late 1970s, conventional theme parks began to look at ways to incorporate water along with their already existing attractions, continued Prosapio. “As a result, the Henrys discovered they had already invented one. With only four water slides, Schlitterbahn officially opened in 1979. The now iconic German fashioned tower, on which the water slides begin, was styled after the Solms Castle in Germany. Often imitated, the Henry family continues to create new and more innovative ways of waterborne fun. Schlitterbahn revolutionized the industry. Today, Schlitterbahn New Braunfels boasts as many as four times the number of rides of all other water parks within more than a 200 mile radius. Along with its natural landscape of hundred year-old cedar and cypress trees, it has as many as twice the attractions of any other water theme park within a 500 mile radius. This year, the new Tubenbach area offers a number of beaches and other attractions. It’s now possible to enjoy the new rides in this area without standing in line. In addition to offering the longest water tubing
excitement in the world, this area also features something else special. The trademark “Transportainment River lets guests remain in the water while effortlessly floating throughout the Eastern Schlitterbahn area. Patrons may also take pleasure in the award-winning, immensely popular Master Blaster. This feature begins six stories up in the famed “Blast Tower in the Blastenhoff area. The limitless “Torrent Wave River is sure to provide wave after wave of relief from boredom.

The first of its kind surfing wave, the “Boogie Bahn” can be found in the Surfenburg area. Another first is the uphill water coaster “Dragon’s Revenge.” Who says water only flows downhill? Don’t forget to circle the giant “Squirt’n Sliden” play area in the “Kristal River.” Round out your family’s excitement at the home of the “Signature Schlitterbahn Castle.” This original park section features eight water tube chutes, a wave pool, seven play areas for kids, and the trendy “swim up bar.” The “Soda Straw,” “Down Hill Racer,” “The Congo,” and “Raging River” may all be enjoyed under beautiful trees and rolling landscape. “We take great pride in our unwavering commitment to developing new and innovative parks, rides, and technologies while keeping the focus on our family friendly amenities and values,” explained Gary Henry, Schlitterbahn’s

Schlitterbahn
Fun Facts
• You’d think moving 36,000 gallons of water per minute would take the most modern of technology. However, Schlitterbahn uses one of the oldest architectural tools, an Archimedes screw to get the job done. The device was invented in the Third Century B.C. and uses the screw’s twisting action to move the water uphill like a conveyor belt. • Schlitterbahn took Loblolly Pines from the Bastrop wildfire and repurposed them into furniture, paneling, and cabanas at every park. This reclaimed wood saved the community considerable expense and allowed this Texas forest to have a second life everywhere from South Padre to Kansas City. The pines had been destined to be turned into mulch. • Schlitterbahn has a three-story Christmas Shoppe open year-round. • Schlitterbahn reclaims 96-98% of the water it uses and utilizes sophisticated filtration systems to ensure water quality. • Schlitterbahn uses parts from the decommissioned USS General John Pope, a navy troop transport used in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The ship had been launched in 1943 and ended up in Brownsville, Texas for dismantling. You can see lifeboats and cots used as shade structures throughout the park.

Check out the other year-round timeless conveniences of the resort as well. Families can take in the beauty of the Texas Hill Country in addition to the water park. Enjoy a quiet getaway with great accommodations, fit for almost any vacation need. The new Treehaus Luxury Suites offers upscale lodging with a treetop view. These suites can accommodate as many as twelve; they are three bedrooms equipped with two baths. With a view of the Comal River, the Riverbend Cabins are also new. These suites render one or two bedrooms, complete with full kitchens and large common areas. Across the river from the Surfenburg area are the Schlitter Stein Lofts. These two bedroom,
two bath lofts feature a more urban feel. With a private patio viewing the Comal River, each loft comes with a queen bed for each bedroom and a leather sofa that converts into two twin beds. On the original Landa Resort site, take your pick from bungalows, condos, suites, cottages, or hotel rooms. Far from the usual run-of-themill, garden variety entertainment options, Schlitterbahn offers a truly one-of-a-kind experience that is a Texas original.

Generally, because it was fertilized with a high nitrogen by Kim Bius fertilizer or fresh manure/mushroom compost amendment. For soil less amendment to be added to existing beds to example, roses require a growing medium of 1/3 sand, give them the addition of the following ingredients: 1/3 humus, and 1/3 peat moss (almost the same as growers sand, black humus, composted mulch (heavily an azaleas, without the sand). Our natively sandy decomposed), composted peat moss, cow manure, and topsoil does not provide the best growing medium for a low dose of a slow release fertilizer such as 3-3-2 beautiful roses, so we add “soil additives” in proportion or something similar. Many forms do not contain to our recipe. fertilizer or peat moss, and their price is lower than Knowing what type soil you have is a great way to start mixes that do. a garden. A simple soil test will help you determine Black Humus, one of my personal favorite ingredients the nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium content of for vegetable gardens. Black humus is the equivalent of your garden area. These tests are available at many having your own compost pile that has aged for years garden centers and at the extension service office in and made a rich, black, heavier soil, full of nutrients Walker County on Tam Road. for retaining walls, to build berms, for raising soil levels, and as a base filler for large gardens. Do not be fooled; many topsoils here have strong nutrients and the soil components throughout Walker County vary greatly. Mulch is available in a multitude of wood varieties that claim a multitude of “cures.” Mulch is available fine ground, shredded, and in large wood chunks with bits of fine ground in it. Shredded bark stays in place, does not float, does not attract fire ants (large chunks do), and has enough consistency to last six months before replacement. Yes, bark mulch has to be replaced. It is an organic product that decomposes with time, adding nutrients to your soil as it decomposes….so you get the benefit on both ends. DO NOT APPLY PLASTIC MULCH TO YOUR BEDS FOR ANY REASON. Mushroom compost is the planting medium used at the mushroom factory in Madisonville and an excellent growing additive for veggie and herb gardening. Fresh mushroom compost can be “hot”, still releasing nitrogen at such a high rate that it “steams”….in this case, the compost must be allowed to age a few months before use. The best way to use mushroom compost is to allow to age for 6 months with a heavy black plastic tarp placed over it. Bagged mushroom compost is sterilized and ready for use. Things my Granddaddy said... Wise and witty ways to talk like our grandparents
Submitted by Wes Grossie
How to say that someone is busy:
My mom used to say this about people who didn’t tell the truth: “A bird can’t fly very far before his tail (tale) catches up with him!
Busy as a funeral home fan in July. Got to get back to my rat killing. She’s jumping like grease (or water) on a hot skillet.
He’s got more money than Carters has oats (or liver pills).
Busy as a one-eyed dog in a smokehouse.
People would ask my dad, “How’s it going? and he would reply, “Just going round and round like a brace and bit.

Have a safe and healthy summer
Summer is here, and families all across America will be planning vacations for some rest and relaxation. Don’t ruin the fun by stressing over it. Here are some simple tips to plan ahead, de-stress your vacation, and take precautions to maintain good health.

during off-peak hours or taking non-direct flights, and staying over at a destination at least three nights may save money on airfares in some locations. Consider comparing the cost of airfare differences versus extra hotel and meal expenses when shopping for airfares. Work with a travel agent who’s in the know about vacation spots and has access to last-minute package deals and special airfares. Be sure to hold hotel reservations in advance with a credit card so you won’t be caught without accommodations. Once you get to your vacation spot, stop by the local visitors bureau. These offices are generally staffed with eager, knowledgeable people who are glad to give you free advice and maps. Once you have your vacation details planned, remember that summer travel can increase health risks. Here are some precautions to consider so you can travel safe. • Check your health insurance. Some plans don’t cover care abroad or non-emergency care when traveling. • Ask your doctor about calling for problems away from home, and carry contact numbers with you. • If you take prescription medications, tell your plan you need a vacation refill. • Use seat belts, bike helmets, sunscreen, and lifejackets; always use footwear and swim with a buddy. • Use insect repellent with 30% DEET. • Bring a car safety kit — flares, space blanket, water, snacks. • Pack a first-aid kit. • Don’t eat perishable foods that have been unrefrigerated for two hours or more. • In places with potentially unsafe water, treat water with a trace of iodine, or boil it for drinking and brushing teeth. Don’t eat salads, uncooked vegetables, or unpasteurized dairy products. • If traveling to a less developed country, consult your physician about prevention and consider supplemental travel insurance for medical expenses. These preventive measures will help assure medical issues don’t get in the way of a great trip. The point of a vacation is to enjoy a little rest and relaxation, so don’t stress over it!

Dear Gabby

Welcome back to the Dear Gabby advice column. The only whistles I get anymore are from my tea kettle, but I have found my perfect radio station! I used to listen to “Oldies, but now I listen to remakes called “Real Oldies, like “You’re So Varicose Vein by Carly Simon, “How Can You Mend A Broken Hip? by the Bee Gees, and “I Get By with a Little Help from Depends by the Beatles. My advice might be a little salty, but this old “seasoned citizen has been around the block a few times and knows what’s good for you. DEAR GABBY I don’t date much, but have met a new guy that I like a lot. He rarely takes me out, but likes to spend every moment with me when I’m not working. He doesn’t like for me to socialize with my friends, just spend time with him, so I think he really likes me, too. Something happened the other day that makes me wonder about him, and I’d like your opinion. I saw a little key on his key ring; I had never seen one like it before. When I asked about it, he said it fit the lock on a box where he keeps his important papers. A police officer came to my workplace the next day and laid his keys on the counter to pay. He had one of those keys on his ring, and he told me it was a handcuff key. Why would my boyfriend have one, and why would he lie about it? NOT THE KEY TO MY HEART DEAR NOT Well, I can explain it to you, but I can’t understand it for you. In addition to several other red flags your letter raises about your beau’s behavior, I can think of only a few reasons why a man would need a handcuff key. I got the distinct impression that this fellow is not in law enforcement. If it’s for any other reason, I’m not going there, and I recommend you don’t, either. He is trouble, young lady, and is likely in trouble as well. I can only advise you to run, don’t walk, away from this man.
DEAR GABBY I have a cousin who thinks she knows everything. She is always giving advice to other people, and she is such a know-it-all. The worst of it is people are always asking her for her opinion, which gives her an even bigger head! I have a successful career as a taser tester, with no help from her, and have just been promoted to the one who gets to shoot the taser. FIRSTRATE COUSIN DEAR FIRST COUSIN Very funny, Madeline...I know that’s you. Your crazy is showing, and I think you need to tuck it back in. Just wait until the family reunion next month!
Send in your Dear Gabby question today!

With this investment, each student participates in four fun activities, gets a t-shirt, has a snack midway through the morning, and a lifetime of memories. Payments can be made out to HISD by check (please include your driver’s license number on the check), money order, or cash.
Teachers for HEAP are all certified teachers with classroom experience. A lot of teachers are currently employed with HISD; some are retired teachers. The local YMCA is also offering an “Afternoon of Fun program. This program has limited space. Anyone interested in the “Afternoon of Fun should contact the YMCA directly. You can go to www.ymcahouston.org/huntsville to fill out the application for this program. The cost is $45 and the kids will have more activities through the YMCA from 12:30 – 5:30 pm. Registration forms for HEAP are located at each elementary campus office. Once students have filled out the form, they can return it to the office and the forms will be picked up. There is also a HEAP website that includes registration forms and information on all of the activities. Go to bit.ly/heaphtx and click on the link you need to download registration forms. Registration forms can be dropped off at Huntsville High School (515 FM 2821 East; Huntsville, Texas 77320) or mailed. Please put attention: HEAP, Jennifer Ballard. Contact information is also included for HEAP. You can use the website or email Jennifer at jrballard@huntsville-isd.org. HEAP incorporates the theme of “Where learning and fun go together. The great thing about HEAP is there are no tests. The kids will get to do a variety of fun activities without the pressure of answering questions and getting right or wrong answers. Learning can be fun for all students, and this environment can help bolster that idea. There are also activities they learn that can benefit them later in life. Cooking skills, sign language, crochet, outdoor education, crafts— all of these might come in handy when they grow up. But don’t count out the game activities or learning a new skill like music, dance, or karate. There are so many opportunities offered for kids; it is really too good to pass up.

HEAP is a great summer activity for anyone to let their kids participate in. One session is two weeks, so they still have other parts of their summer to go on vacation and have outings with friends. But HEAP is also a great place to bring your friends or meet new ones from other places. If a child is visiting his/ her relatives for the summer, sign them up for HEAP. They can have fun activities in the morning and spend time with family in the afternoon. Any and all kids are welcome. Donations to HEAP to provide scholarships for students are greatly appreciated. Many scholarship applications have already be received. We want as many kids at HEAP as possible. Every little bit helps. Donations can also be dropped off at Huntsville High School.

Out of the Mouths of Babes... This feature is dedicated to sharing all those hysterical things that come out of the mouths of little ones. They’re probably the stories that you’ve told over and over for years... we look forward to hearing yours!
My son and his family went to dinner at a steakhouse to celebrate his birthday. The waitress asked my 5 year-old grandson Luke what he would like to eat, and Luke said, “Steak, please.” She then asked him how he would like it cooked, and he said, “The microwave is fine.” Betty Stevens
My 5 year-old was sliding headfirst down the stairs (on purpose), and I told her to stop (for fear she would start somersaulting). She got up, turned to look at me with her hands on her hips, and said, “Why, mom--am I totally freaking you out, or what?” Kathryn
BEST BURGERS IN TOWN!
As my 3 year-old nephew was heading outside, Nana asked him where he was going. He replied, “Going crazy, Nana.” Funny kid! Christina
At church (we sit in the 2nd row), my 3 year-old niece said in a very loud voice, “AGAIN???” when the pastor asked us to stand for the 4th time in just a few minutes. Everyone behind us thought it was pretty hilarious. Cyndie
SAY A PRAYER Little Johnny and his family were having Sunday dinner at his grandmother’s house. Everyone was seated around the table as the food was being served. When Little Johnny received his plate, he started eating right away. “Johnny! Please wait until we say our prayer,” said his mother. “I don’t need to,” the boy replied. “Of course you do,” his mother insisted. “We always say a prayer before eating at our house.” “That’s at our house,” Johnny explained. “But this is Grandma’s house, and she knows how to cook!”

Summer Travel Tips for Pets
Vet Connect Article submitted by: Kim VanWagner, D.V.M.
Summer is a popular time to travel, but it has a few disadvantages for pets, such as heat and crowds. Several things need to be taken into consideration when deciding to include your pet in your travel plans. The information in this article is adapted from a list of recommendations from the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). First and foremost, always make sure your pet is comfortable with travel. Some pets cannot handle travel because of illness, injury, age, or temperament (including anxieties). • If you don’t often take your pet in the car, start with short trips to “funâ€? destinations (such as a dog-friendly park or play area) to help your pet get used to riding in a car. • If your pet gets carsick, talk to your veterinarian about alternate traveling suggestions, supplements, or medications to keep them comfortable. • Make sure your pet has identification tags with up-to-date information. Permanent identification with microchipping is highly recommended as well. • When considering interstate or international travel for your pet, plan ahead. Some preparations may need to start six months or more in advance depending on destination. Countries, territories, states, and even public modes

Photos by K Images Tucked away behind the police department, nestled amidst a neighborhood and a local church, sits a trove of building material ready to assist community members in Madisonville and surrounding areas in constructing their lives. Beginning in the early 1900s, Vick’s Lumber has persevered through tragedy, united a family in service to this small town in southeast Texas, and given back to the community. In the late 1920s, the Vick family purchased the lumberyard. After her husband’s death in 1952, Mrs. Vick ran the store with help from managers until her son took over while in college. After his passing in
1995, a widow again took the helm. In 1999, this Madisonville fixture suffered a horrendous fire. “When this happened, I lived right at the end of the block; one of the firemen came and got me to open the gate so they wouldn’t have to tear everything up trying to get in to fight the fire, current owner Randy Lowery stated. At that time, he was one of the managers at the store. George Jaster and his wife Sally bought the business in order to rebuild and continue serving this populous. He purchased a building next to the original location. Knowing some customers had trouble finding this temporary store encouraged

the owners, not related to the Vicks, to maintain the family name. George quipped to Randy after he had purchased the business, “I’m not changing the name. If they can’t find us when we are next door, they’ll never be able to find us if we change the name. In 2009, George asked Randy Lowery if he and his wife Rita desired to carry on the traditions of this family-run, customer-service-oriented lumber company. Randy feels he owes a great debt of gratitude to this family. By carrying on a legacy of putting the customer first, the current owners consider this a small way of honoring the Vick family name. Vick’s Lumber not only venerates the original family proprietors, but within this institution, a family unit works together daily to successfully run their business as they share memories and continue a legacy of customer service. In addition to Randy, seven full-time employees work from 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:00 a.m.-noon on Saturdays in order to meet contractor needs and assist do-it-yourselfers with household projects. Rita’s daily tasks include keeping up with inventory, paying the bills, and payroll. She also wears the hat of head of human resources. Randy’s older son Scott helps keep the store stocked, enters received items into the computer register, and lends a helping hand to consumers throughout the day. The Lowery’s younger son Nick works with his older brother in making orders to keep the store supplied as well as placing the merchandise on the shelves when the deliveries are received. Although Jaime Martinez assists with sales throughout the day, he also keeps the lumberyard organized and stocked. As yard foreman, he oversees yardhands Andres Castaneda and Justin Harris as they load customer orders. Steven Story works in the sales department, as well as picking up merchandise for the store. Sixty to seventy percent of the customer base consists of contractors, while the remaining clients are homeowners with projects. The 1.75 acre site provides patrons with not only lumber, but paint and painting supplies, plumbing supplies, electrical materials, and concrete products. “We sell anything needed for pouring new slabs, including the bag concrete. We sell a lot of bag concrete! Randy shared. A couple of contractors who patronize Vick’s build the entire house from slab to finish with materials from the store; however, several smaller contractors who do remodeling also acquire needed materials here. Many local plumbers and painters purchase all their supplies at Vick’s. The oil companies that have moved into the
Outside Crew
area are customers, as are local schools, local governments, and churches. Vick’s has helped to supply materials needed throughout this closeknit community. What sets Vick’s Lumber apart from many of the “big box stores” is customer service. “To get someone to come by and say ‘Can I help you?’ sometimes is rare (at a box store). We try to ask everyone if they need help. If they just want to look, that’s fine. If they have questions, we try to be there to answer them,” Randy stated. Another factor that sets Vick’s above the rest is their delivery service. “If someone is building a house, a box yard will bring all the supplies they can in a single load. That means more of the supplies will be sitting out in the weather. We will do a smaller load, especially if the location is fairly close. Since the loads are smaller, the builder will not have supplies sitting out as much.” Since the owners and/or managers cannot afford to be absent
from the store during business hours, they have even been known to make deliveries themselves after five. Care for the consumer does not stop within the store’s boundaries. Vick’s Lumber building materials can be found at various places in town, but also out in Midway, Huntsville, and even at the mushroom plant nearby. Although the general service area radius extends 25-30 miles, they have delivered to some locations as far as 75-80 miles away. Another detail in which Vick’s mirrors the atmosphere of a small town general store of the past is the owners allow charge accounts. Randy and his wife inherited several of these arrangements from the original owners. The longevity of relationships with clients demonstrates how Vick’s Lumber has succeeded in always meeting the needs of their customers with a smile and assisting them in any way they possibly can. contractor has continued to buy supplies here for over 30 years. A 94 year-old customer who is a local preacher has been coming to the store for many, many years. “He did concrete work and would paint parking lot stripes up until a few years ago. He’s slowing down a little on the outside work now, although he is still preaching,â€? said the Lowerys when asked about their loyal patrons. Since the family all works together in the store, taking family vacations together is a difficult task. A couple of years ago, they did close the store for the entire Thanksgiving weekend and went to Port Aransas together. Another interest the Lowerys share is a love of golf. “We work together all week, then we play golf together on Sundays most of the time,â€? Randy shared. Rita and Randy do take advantage of attending hardware shows put on by suppliers a couple times per year in order to spend quality time together away from the store. “They (the employees from the store) may call us ten times a day, but we do get away,â€? Rita laughingly stated. Many times Randy and Rita stay in Madisonville, while Scott and his wife attend the shows. Although Randy never thought he would be in the retail industry, he enjoys working with the people of Madisonville and the surrounding area. “I’ve worked here for 30 years, and I’ve had the same wife for 32 years; I guess I’m just a creature of habit,â€? Randy quipped. Plans for
Celebrating 17 years of keeping you on the road!
the future do include keeping the store in the family upon Randy’s retirement. Other forthcoming plans include expansion of the store and the receiving area. “When we go to the shows and buy new displays, we have to find a place to put them. The store is pretty packed right now, Randy stated. The impact of this company does not just exist within the walls of the building. The Lowerys give back in many ways to their community. They will buy two to three animals from the fair and also contribute to the Cattlemen’s Association. During football season, the school throws t-shirts into the stands; Vick’s Lumber sponsors this activity. Randy coached little league for 16-17 years. Although he no longer is coaching, the store does try to sponsor a team each year. Children of customers trying to raise money for fair projects or the rodeo know these giving individuals are willing to help in any way possible. Randy noted, “The community has been good to me, so I try to give back any way that I can. He enjoys living in this small town where the people are close and supportive. “If there is a cause out there, you can find somebody to help you—that’s for sure! And it is certain Vick’s Lumber will be there for contractors, homeowners, and the community for years to come.

3. You saw me where I never was and where I could not be. And yet within that very place, my face you often see. What am I? 4. I have an eye but cannot see. I am stronger and faster than any man alive, but have no limbs. Who am I? udoku is a logic-based placement puzzle. The aim of the puzzle is to enter a numerical digit from 1-9 in each cell of a grid, starting with various digits given in some cells (the "givens"). Each row, column, and region must contain only one instance of each numeral. The goal is to fill in the empty cells, one numeral in each, so that each column, row, and region contains the numerals 1–9 exactly once. Each numeral in the solution therefore occurs only once in each of three "directions."

Got Winsomeness? by Kathleen Tadasa
winsome
adjective 1. Attractive or appealing in appearance or character. Cheerful, pleasant, appealing.
e
/’win¡s m/
Your speech should always be winsome, seasoned with salt, so that you will know how you must answer each person. ~Colossians 4:6
Recently, while standing at a business counter, I noticed a man near me ON the counter. Well, not really a man, but a hand-sanitizer dispenser shaped like a man’s frame, holding the bottle that represented his head and torso. I am not inclined to use sanitizer, being loyal for decades to my mother’s soap-and-water washing instructions. This time, however, I reached for the stuff. Why? Because I liked the way it was presented to me. I found Sanitizer Man humorous, winsome, and an expression of creativity. In a world full of hurt,
he was kind of healing. And I’m not talking only about killing germs. That got me to thinking about my witness. Do I come across to those who appear resistant to God as a humorous, winsome, creative, hurt-healing Christian? I know we are often called to be sober, vigilant, instructive. Given the times, these characteristics seem all the more important. But, as I considered my new friend, I realized in Sanitizer Man humor and serious purpose co-existed. They can do the same in me.
“Pathetic indeed is the stern, somber Christian who has developed the look of an old basset hound through long hours of practice in restraining humor and squelching laughs. ~Chuck Swindoll
