In November 2019 Dilmah Tea Founder Merrill J. Fernando was capped as a Doctor of Science by Massey University in New Zealand.

Fernando’s greatest achievement is in beginning to overcome the exploitation of his country’s tea industry and taking his tea, garden fresh and unblended, to tea drinkers around the world. Similarly laudable is the philosophy around which he formed his brand – making business a matter of human service. That philosophy is fulfilled in the work of his MJF Charitable Foundation which uses a minimum 15% of the pretax profits of Dilmah and its ancillary businesses, to provide nutrition, education, care and support to differently abled children, youth in marginalized communities, the elderly. Each of over 200 projects is designed around the principle of dignified empowerment, and touches the lives of over 10,000 families each year. In 2007, he extended the humanitarian assistance his businesses offer, to the environment with the formation of Dilmah Conservation.

strong outcomes through entrepreneurship development amongst survivors of tsunami, war windows, empowerment of women, support for children with cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Autism, supporting ancient tribes in Sri Lanka to adapt to the 21st Century, fostering innovation as a means of addressing developmental challenges, and a host of other projects which have the objective of sharing with the less privileged, the blessings of success that Dilmah has received.

Merrill was honoured by the panel of Nobel Laureates that evaluates ‘businessworthiness’ amongst business men and women globally, as an Oslo Business for Peace Honouree in 2015. In 2016 he was

chosen Sri Lankan of the Year by a panel of eminent persons and in the same year he was awarded the FIRST Award for Responsible Capitalism for improving the lives of underprivileged children and deprived communities. The Award was presented by Rt. Hon. Philip Hammond MP., Chancellor of the Exchequer. Dilmah was recognized by brand think tank, Medinge Group as a Brand with a Conscience. That same year he was honoured as a Sri Lankan of the Year and in 2018 received a Lifetime Achievement Award for humanitarian service from the World Association of Chefs Societies at the Congress. In August 2019 Dilmah Founder was honored 2nd highest Sri Lankan National award and bestowed the title of “Deshamanya”. In November 2019 Dilmah Tea Founder Merrill J. Fernando was capped as a Doctor of Science by Massey University in New Zealand. He was nominated for the honorary doctorate by the Pro Vice Chancellor College of

Sciences, Professor Ray Geor, together with Distinguished Professor Paul Moughan, director Massey University’s renowned Riddet Institute. “This honorary doctorate, only the fourth to be bestowed upon an international recipient, celebrates his prowess in business and science, but also his commitment to ethical food production and his philanthropic activities that has seen Dilmah known for its commitment to people,”

DILMAH POINTS OF DIFFERENCE WHAT IS SINGLE ORIGIN TEA?

100% PURE CEYLON TEA

Single Origin is tea sourced from one single country. Dilmah is sourced from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), producer of the world’s finest tea. Single Origin explains why Dilmah tea is very consistent in its quality and taste. Single Origin 100% Pure Ceylon tea, packed at source, is fresher, richer and full of flavour. Single Origin is the exact opposite of multi origin blends.

Dilmah regular black tea products are strictly 100% Pure Ceylon tea, the world’s finest quality. Ceylon tea is unique in the variety produced in this little island. It is also the world’s most expensive tea overall.

WHAT IS MULTI ORIGIN TEA? It is a mixture of tea from several countries, blended to meet price points, largely disregarding other factors such as, quality, taste and freshness. They do not provide consistency. Origins vary whenever cheap tea from new countries show up. Some multi origin blends may contain tea from 30 or 35 different countries.

GARDEN FRESH Dilmah is based in Sri Lanka, the world’s largest exporter of tea. All our regular black tea is packed fresh at origin within days from picking fresh leaf in the tea fields. Freshness is the key to antioxidants which provide health benefits in tea. Nearly all other international brands are packed in consuming countries with imported tea that age in ships and in warehouses, travelling thousands of miles away from their roots. That tea is generally, ten to twelve months old by the time it is blended (mixed), packed, branded and delivered to supermarkets. Antioxidants decline with age.

FIRST EVER ETHICAL TEA

Some years ago, most International brands relied entirely or, very largely on Ceylon tea for their quality. Growing demand and competition in the market place drove them to cheaper sources. They used less and less Ceylon tea and now, most of them use none! Ceylon tea is expensive following its high quality which is the main reason they abandoned Ceylon tea in their products.

Tea farmers live in poverty because their crop is purchased by traders at very low prices often, below their cost of producing it. Value addition, branding and marketing generate substantial profits- that is the speciality of traders. Those profits are made outside Sri Lanka or in other producing countries!.

PACKED AT SOURCE DILMAH is packed at source (Sri Lanka) - right where it is grown, and shipped, refreshingly fresh, to supermarkets around the world. Nearly all other international brands are packed in consuming countries. Packing at source provides fresher, richer and more flavoursome tea. Some multi origin blends may be packed in a tea producing country but that does not provide freshness because some components are imported from other origins.

Dilmah tea is grown and packaged in Sri Lanka and marketed by the family under its own brand name. Earnings which are taken away by foreigners now, remain in Sri Lanka when you buy Dilmah! Kahawatte Plantations has topped the Colombo tea auction averages for the last 5 years. Along with two other joint venture plantation companies, Dilmah accounts for 25 million kilograms of tea & 2.5 million kilograms of rubber annually. Kahawatte Plantations produces high quality tea and rubber on 17 estates. It is also the largest single cinnamon grower. There is an emphasis on worker relations, facilitated by the activities of the MJF Charitable Foundation.

FORBES & WALKER Formed over 125 years ago, Forbes & Walker has a reputation for service and integrity. It is the largest tea and commodity broker in Sri Lanka, providing a quality service to growers of tea, rubber, coconut and spices since 1881.

PRINTCARE Dilmah Tea is packed at origin in a world-class plant, operating the most technologically advanced packing machines. The manufacturing processes are ISO 9001:2008 as well as food safety certified, initially by HACCP; the first such company in any industry in Sri Lanka, and now ISO 22000. When Dilmah was created, there was a need for sophisticated packaging material then unavailable in Sri Lanka. In addition to being the supplier of Dilmah’s requirements of printed boxes, tea bag tags and envelopes, Printcare is the largest specialist packaging supplier to the tea industry globally.

TIMBER CONCEPTS Timber Concepts was formed to supply the many designs of wooden presenters used by Dilmah and other brands; it now also supplies cigar boxes for export.

MJF BEVERAGES MJF Beverages operates the first tea concentrate plant in the country at its Rilhena Estate in South Central Sri Lanka. At the scenically located plant, fresh tea is converted to a high quality concentrate the same day, to make ready to drink and iced tea.
