Plants Manipulation Architecture: Knitting Abandoned Ruins Final Project Studio - 2017 Individual Work Topics: Abandoned Buildings, Plants Manipulation

Situated in a future scenario where this entropy is taking place in all damaged built environments, this final project challenges how far the entropy elements of abandoned architecture - wild plants and weeds - could be collaborated to accomodate the future of spatial needs. 3

Abandoned buildings that has been around in our urban context often situated in a damaged condition, where the physical aspects has been disturbed by the ecosystem (either by human or natural causes). Thus, it has a higher chance in invasion by natural entropy elements (Mashhadi, 2014) Natural entropy itself is irresistable in this situation. It could have been invaded the physical element of the built environment as the major significant part of the ruins. Then, the idea is not resisting this natural force. Instead, we could collaborated with it (Till, 2009).

WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF 2075 Situated in Gondangdia area, Jakarta, it is injected with a scenario that the future is facing a condition where abandoned ruins are everywhere as the effect of massive destruction by human. The enthropy elements itself - wild plants and weeds - affects the building material aging process. We have to see this as the possibilities in order to accomodate the future of spatial needs.

REFLECTING TO THE EXISTINGS Programs is injected onto the site, reflecting to the need of people on the aftermath of destruction. Here, the program is focusing on how they could find entertainment together with doing their everyday activity. Some programs need to be connected to each other, so that affected the spatial function configuration. There are functions that is placed close to each other, and some others needs intervention to be connected. The plants that will be used on the site are the story maker. It is placed based on the existing conditions, their ability to the spatial context (how we could shape them on the site) and their necessity while growing.

Looking at the context, the ruins also has the potentials to be treated by the plants morphology manipulations based on the ruins characteristics. Some has a destructed void inside, that is potential to the hanging shapes. Ruins that has a destroyed facade could be covered by covering plants or could potentially be connected to the other buildings by shaping a skywalk.

Jatinegara Elderly Care Architectural Design 5 Studio - 2016 Individual Work Topics: Heritage Building, Adaptive Reuse, Social Space

This studio project consentrated in adaptive reuse of heritage building in Jakarta. Following the Urban Development Guideline of Jakarta, this project challenges how the historical building could adapt with the current urban context and regulations. This studio starts with the historical analysis on heritage building in Jakarta during the Dutch East Indies colonialism era then continued with the intervention ideas that is injected to the site. 8

The choosen site is an Indonesian ex-military office located across Jatinegara Station. It was built in 1808, and served as a military school for the Dutch troops with 3 main buildings that is now declared as a Type “A” Heritage Building by the Governor of Jakarta

SITE

JATINEGARA // MEESTER CORNELIS Jatinegara is a district located in the eastern side of Jakarta. It was previously named as Meester Cornelis during the Dutch East Indies colonialism era, and served as a municipal city on the southern side of Batavia. It is traversed by the Great Post Road (De Grote Postweg) as a major trading line in Java connecting to Batavia, thus it is also one of the trading spot that has a local market with a major station and tram line. Meester Cornelis was also serving as a military base of the Dutch East Indies that has military school and fort. Traditional Market

INTERVENTION IDEA

Re sid ent ial Bld .B

Based on the regulations in UDGL of Jakarta, this site area are specified to accomodate the need of public & social services such as an elderly care. The elderly population in Indonesia are predicted to be approximately 28.8 million by 2020, or equal to around 11.34% of the total population. Meanwhile, about 4.6 million of the elderly population are displaced (per 2013) Thus, the elderly care should meet the condition where all the elderly remain in a good health, active, and productive socially and economically.

EXISTING HERITAGE BUILDING

MASSING CONCEPT

The original heritage buildings are the 3 masses at the front, that is the main building, the east pavillion and the west pavillion with several details on the doors, windows, column, and the roof crown. The details comes from Indische Empire Style during the Dutch occupation in the 18th century.

East Pavillion

West Pavillion

The idea is to highlight the existing heritage building by making a cascading background, so the view is directed towards the heritage building at the front without making the mass look distinct with the existing. Heritage Building Proposed Additional Mass

Rooftop Revitalization of Financial Head Office in Jakarta Professional Work - 2020 Group Work (Member: Dimas Dewantara, Stefani Palupi Wedhaswari) Topics: Revitalization, Adaptive Reuse, Interior

Concept proposal project on renovation and revitalization of an existing rooftop on one of the state’s financial institute headquarter that previously were being used as mechanical and services area. 17

PROJECT BRIEF

Corresponding to the existing crown structure, the proposed interiors are being enveloped. Thus, the interior form adjusting to the shape of the structure and injected with appropriate mood and ambiance.

The existing rooftop as the site location previously were being used as mechanical and services area (VAC outdoor unit and others). Since these mechanical and services items were being moved to other area, the client wanted to maximize the possibility of this idle space. With the vista potentials that it has, they want it to be turned into a recreational area for the employees. Crown Structure

COMPETITION BRIEF “Indonesia is a country with the biggest moslem population in the world. This is the main reason of massive mosque growth throughout the country. Even so, most of it is not being responded with responsive design to the common issues. The journey of mosque architecture itself is quite long, physically it has a lot of change as a respond to the society. Nevertheless, salat as the worshiping activity itself will remains still. MINIATUR 2017 challenges all the participant to predict the condition or issues that occures 50 years ahead, and how the needs of worshiping space for moslems will stand to conditions predicted.”

Balancing Needs

2035 2050

50 years from now, our society will live in a fast-paced world, where people become more productive and social engaging is increasing. People need something to break the pace, with slow-paced period (resting, sleeping, entertaining, peacefulness). The use of technology to reach slow pace is slowly making people feel inhuman, as it happens unnaturally.

Fast Pace

Slow Pace Self Ritual

Mosque as the oasis, acting as a healing spot for people to fulfill their needs of slow-paced life in the midst of activity. Mosque as a place for fulfilling spiritual need, whilst restoring humanity and socializing. Also to take a break and take a rest from the busy routine, naturally.

Socializing Meditating and self-reflecting Resting Perform ritual to God all without dependency to technology

Offices Chosen Site The center point between the human activity

SITE Mega Kuningan, Jakarta

Residentials

PROGRAM Process from fast to slow pace may differ. One may take a transition (by socializing with others) before having a ritual of spirituality. Others may take it straight to self ritual stage to seek peacefulness by cleansing itself and perform the ritual. Activity may be continued by take a rest to prepare itself back to the fast-paced world.
